Grinding tree stumps is usually how we deal with them. If you have land to clear on your homestead, it could become quite a chore to get these stumps taken care of. But did you know that you can eat your stumps?
Well, that is not exactly true. If you head out there and start chewing on tree stumps, they won't taste very good. And there is no method of slow cooking that will make that poplar edible or appetizing.
However, one way you can both eat your stumps and hasten their decomposition is to inoculate them with a mushroom spore. I understand that is a mouthful of words that don’t really mean much to the average person.
What I'm saying is, you can buy wooden dowels that are covered with the spores of certain types of mushrooms.
These dowels can be easily inserted into your stumps and they will begin feasting on the wood. The best part is that you will get delicious mushrooms several times a year. These spores are prolific and will produce enough mushrooms that you will need to dry them.
If you do this to a field of stumps, you better get your e-commerce ready or set a booth up at the local farmers market.
Shiitake Mushrooms retail for between 8$ and $15.
I prefer the Shiitake because it looks very distinct and I love the taste as well. They also preserve well.
Mushroom Nutrition
The Shiitake mushroom is a delicious little cap. It's full of great nutrients like copper and selenium. It's also a decent source of Vitamin B2 and B6. It contains lipids and amino acids as well.
Shiitake have played a role in Chinese medicine for millennia. There are also studies on their ability to fight tumors. For the most part, though, they are just delicious and grow with little to no effort. You can eat them, dry them, or sell them.
Tools and Supplies
Drill and Drill bit of 5/16th inch bit
Hammer
Wax
Vessel for melting wax
Small Paintbrush
Shiitake Spawn (store in fridge until ready for use)
The Process
7. That’s it! It’s not a tough process. If you can melt some wax and use a drill, you can have all the mushrooms you want.
How to Activate the Spore
It takes about 6-12 months for the spore to initially spread through your stump. So, it will take at least a year before you get any production.
Your stumps will produce in spring and in fall. You may get some sparse production in summer, but the bulk of production happens in spring and fall. The spore will need to be distributed through the stump each season and activated.
The best way to do this is to first soak your stumps thoroughly. When I do this with logs, I toss them into a small creek on my property overnight. You can water the stumps a few times a day for about 5 minutes. Just get them nice and soaked.
Next, you will want to bang the stumps. You can use a bat to hit the stump. Don’t really crack the thing and damage the stump, but give it a couple whacks on all sides. This will kickstart production.
Other Tips
After 6 months, keep an eye on the logs or you may miss the first production.
Stumps in the shade will produce best.
Too much direct sun will dry out the stump and they will not produce.
Harvest them when the cap is between 3-4 inches.
To dry, put them in a 200-degree oven until the caps are shrunken and hard.
Of course, the other payoff is that these mushrooms will hasten the decomposition of that problem stump. It won’t work as quickly as a stump grinder, but you will get years of delicious mushrooms out of it!

The parallels in Ultrakill between Life and the Afterlife, man.. The Machines aren't unlike Hell Itself. Both are beings of insatiable hunger. Both experience unending boredom. Both yearn for violence as a relief from it all, and both spread their influence like a cancer upon everything. Perhaps this is why Hell almost seems to welcome machines deeper into itself. Not only are they entertaining - their cruelty inspires it, or whoever carves the demons that are at it's disposal. Both were created by the hands of another, a once superior being they have surpassed and outlived. Perhaps it sees them as kindred. Sees them as something symbiotic, both alike in purpose - to enact violence on those trapped within itself. Both could stand eternal together - after all, plenty of blood to go around, plenty of meat for the grinder, no? Does it realize they'll just keep feeding until there's nothing left? Does it think it can stop them? Does it want to be wiped clean? If it hungers, is it afraid to die? The machines certainly are. This whole crusade is about delaying the inevitable. As long as there is a Machine left standing in Hell, it is fated to run dry. All that would be left is an empty carcass filled with nothing but monuments to cruelty, frozen in time forever with no audience left to appraise them.
Angels, meanwhile, are not so different from humanity in their ways. From what little we know of them, they, too, are full of arrogance and hubris just like humanity, that built the machine that devoured it's creator and went on to devour itself. Hell seems to be the cause of Heaven's fracture. It is the root of the Father's guilt. It's creation set His eventual disappearance in motion. It snuffed the fire out, directly or indirectly. And without guidance, Heaven split and began to consume itself in cruel war. The only thing that kept Heaven from sharing Earth's fate is the Council, that took advantage of the chaos and swiftly took control and unified the Angels once again. But that doesn't mean they put a stop to Heaven's cruelty - in fact, I'd argue they only stoked the flame, kept those beneath them complacent through fear. But at least Heaven regained structure, though it seems like it's a mere shell of what it used to be. The Father is gone. They follow an echo, a memory - or perhaps simply a lie. Still, it's a necessary lie, no? An almost noble one? It's not, of course, at most it's a lesser evil compared to the inferno of warfare, but is there really any other alternative? When Gabriel slaughtered them and showed the rest of Heaven their weakness, did he really do what was right? Heaven had no hand to guide them anymore. It was severed. All that's left is a bloodied stump. How long will it take before the rot spreads, before Heaven erupts into warfare once more? Gabriel can't stop it - he'll be dead soon. If he - one of the most respected and revered angels in the highest ranks - cannot stop the chaos, who can? There's no one left. No one will trust the empty promises of order ever again, seeing how easy it is to destroy.

The world will eat itself out of existence. This is the only way it should end. There is no other way it could end. It's all too far gone. What would be left would either starve and join it's brethren in stillness, or eviscerate itself in one final act of violence. No final words. No concluding statement. No point. Perfect closure.

The company that recently cut down a tree in my yard came again today to remove the stump. They didn't call ahead and let me know, so I went downtown today for work. Had I known they were coming I would have stayed home so I could watch.
Sheila texted me. "The grinder is remote controlled. They let me try it."

Oh that Sheila, joking around like that. Then she sends me a second picture.

Now I'm distraught. She got to operate such a cool machine. I won't get any work done the rest of today, because I will be thinking of this.
Then she added, "I did NOT get to operate it, but they played along with the joke."
Whew! We are still even. Neither one of us can brag about operating a remote controlled stump grinder.

Do you remember me // When the rain gathers? // And do you still believe // That nothing else matters?
I'm blaming this one on @vabam-fr entirely.
This is Banshee- she's the single matriarch of Shatterpack, a Thronebreaker of substantial repute who's leadership, while cruel, has led to her crew capably taking down at least one Collapse-tier godfall- completely unassisted by any other group.
She's brutal, a survivalist who long-since lost her legs having replaced them with carved Godsbone fused to the remaining stumps- closer to the lesser Gods she hunts than a normal dragon now, Banshee sees her pack as useful pawns, and little else.
Meat for the grinder- and magic for the victor.

So the switch to E10 petrol happened several years ago, and as annoyed as I was at the time about it, it's taken this long to start really seeing the toll ethanol takes on small engines, and how inappropriate it is for machines that are used sporadically.
With the old E5 grade fuel, we left things sitting for months at a time to no major effect; our tolerant old Honda-powered pump fired up after over a year no problem.
E10 goes off at around the 5–6 week mark. This is not in keeping with the literature posted about the stuff at the time of the switchover, but it's what we've experienced.
We've had to take off and clean the carbs after this miserably tiny window has passed on the following machines:
The chipper
The stump grinder
The skidsteer
The chainsaw (despite premix and despite being run virtually empty)
Both Scorpas
I discovered the Scorpa problem this weekend, although tbf I was braced for it after this many stupid unnecessary failures. A problem with my bike's registration took most of this year to resolve, so we missed the whole riding season waiting for it to be reliably road-legal. There was no way this shite fuel was going to survive the glacial pace of the DVLA.

Sad dead bae after I managed to get it started, only for its float to get stuck and flood the airbox with fuel 🙃

Here's the gelatinous crap this fuel produces as it putrifies. Looks almost like fish eggs. I couldn't photograph the clagged-up jets, they're just too delicate for my phone camera to get the detail, but all the fine holes were clogged to shit.
I cleaned this out with carb cleaner and the compressor.
We only have one nearby petrol station, and it doesn't supply E5. I'm not impressed — partly for my own sake, and the extra work this stupid policy has dumped in our laps, but also for the sheer number of good petrol domestic machines that are going to be wrecked by this policy. For stupidity, I rank it up there with the abrupt removal of red diesel.

Another bug line for the Kadia region. Snumper, the Wood Eater pokemon, and Stumpul, the Grinder pokemon. These cuties ooze their way across the forest floor, searching for fallen wood and stumps to eat. Their steel radula can make short work of any hardwood!
Shiny pallette and full size png under the cut, plus an image of this line's very specific inspiration
These guys were inspired by this model of stump grinder I used to work with, because watching it move around felt like watching a big ol snail.

DIY vs. Professional Stump Grinding: Which is Right for You?
Removing a tree stump may seem like a straightforward task, but deciding whether to do it yourself or call in the professionals is a decision that requires careful consideration. While DIY stump grinding might appear more cost-effective, it comes with risks, equipment challenges, and safety concerns. On the other hand, professional services offer speed, safety and precision often saving you time and stress. In this post, we’ll break down the pros and cons of each option to help you choose the best approach for your yard and budget.
1. Equipment and Tools
DIY:DIY stump grinding typically requires renting a stump grinder, which can be expensive and physically demanding to operate. Most rental machines are lightweight and less powerful, which may not be ideal for large or deep stumps.
Professional:Tree care professionals use commercial-grade equipment that’s designed to handle stumps of all sizes quickly and efficiently. They also come with the training to use the equipment safely and effectively.
2. Safety Considerations
DIY:Operating a stump grinder can be dangerous if you’re not experienced. Risks include flying debris, personal injury, and property damage. Proper safety gear is essential, and even then, there's still a learning curve.
Professional:Professionals are trained to follow strict safety protocols. They assess the area, manage risks, and handle the machinery with confidence reducing the likelihood of accidents.
3. Time and Labor
DIY:Grinding a stump yourself can take several hours or even days depending on its size and the hardness of the wood. It's also labor-intensive and physically exhausting.
Professional:With the right equipment and experience, a professional can usually complete the job in under an hour. They clean up afterward and leave your yard ready for new landscaping.
4. Cost Comparison
DIY:DIY may seem cheaper upfront rental costs range from $100–$200 per day but consider the time investment, fuel, potential damage, and your own effort.
Professional:Professional services may cost more initially, usually between $150–$400 per stump, but you’re paying for expertise, efficiency, and peace of mind.
5. Final Result and Cleanup
DIY:Many DIY jobs leave behind uneven ground or wood chips scattered throughout the yard. You’ll need to handle cleanup and possibly backfill the area.
Professional:Professionals service typically offer complete stump removal, backfilling, and debris cleanup, leaving your yard clean, level, and ready for your next project.
Conclusion:
If you're dealing with a small stump and have the time, tools, and patience, DIY might be a feasible option. However, for larger stumps, tight spaces, or if you value your time and safety, hiring a professional is often the smarter and more efficient choice. In the end, the right decision comes down to your priorities: convenience, cost, and confidence in the outcome.

Tree Removal Services in Cape Town
Cape Town’s stunning natural beauty is complemented by its rich variety of trees, both indigenous and exotic. However, there are times when tree removal becomes necessary—whether due to safety concerns, landscaping plans, or environmental factors. If you're a homeowner, property manager, or business owner searching for reliable tree removal services in Cape Town, this guide covers all you need to know.
Why Tree Removal Might Be Necessary
While trees provide shade, reduce carbon dioxide, and enhance property value, they can also pose hazards or hinder development. Here are some common reasons people seek tree removal services in Cape Town:
Dead or Diseased Trees: A dying tree is not only unsightly but also dangerous. It can fall unexpectedly, posing risks to people, buildings, and vehicles.
Storm Damage: Cape Town is known for its strong winter winds. Trees damaged during storms may require immediate removal to prevent further danger.
Obstruction: Trees growing too close to buildings, power lines, or blocking sunlight may need trimming or complete removal.
Construction Projects: Renovations, new builds, or landscaping changes often require clearing existing vegetation.
Invasive Species: Non-native trees like Australian wattles may need to be removed to protect local ecosystems.
Choosing a Professional Tree Removal Service in Cape Town
Tree removal is a specialized job that involves risk. Hiring professional, certified arborists ensures the work is done safely and legally. When selecting a tree removal service in Cape Town, consider the following:
1. Experience and Certification
Choose companies with experienced staff and valid arborist certifications. They should understand local tree species, soil conditions, and municipal bylaws.
2. Safety Measures
Tree felling is dangerous. Reputable services use proper safety gear, follow safety protocols, and are fully insured to protect both workers and property.
3. Equipment and Techniques
Look for companies that use modern tools and methods such as climbing harnesses, cherry pickers, stump grinders, and wood chippers for efficient and clean service.
4. Waste Removal
Tree felling leaves behind branches, logs, and stumps. A good company will include waste removal and site clean-up in their service package.
5. Environmental Responsibility
Check if the service complies with Cape Town’s environmental regulations. Some trees are protected under local legislation and require permits before removal.
Cost of Tree Removal in Cape Town
The cost of tree removal varies based on several factors:
Tree Size and Location: Larger trees or those in hard-to-reach areas cost more to remove.
Tree Condition: Diseased or dead trees may require special handling.
Stump Removal: This is often a separate service with its own pricing.
Permit Requirements: Removing protected trees may involve additional steps and costs.
Legal Considerations and Permits
Cape Town has regulations protecting indigenous and heritage trees. Before removing a tree, especially on public land or near conservation zones, you may need a permit from the City of Cape Town. A professional tree removal company can guide you through the permitting process and ensure compliance.
Benefits of Hiring Local Tree Removal Experts
Hiring a local Cape Town tree removal service has several advantages:
Knowledge of Local Flora: Local experts are familiar with indigenous and invasive species and can offer informed advice.
Quick Response Times: Local companies can often respond faster, especially in emergencies.
Support for Local Economy: Hiring local services contributes to the growth of small businesses in the community.
Emergency Tree Removal Services
In cases of storm damage, uprooted trees, or sudden breakages, emergency tree removal services are crucial. Many Cape Town companies offer 24/7 emergency tree felling to help protect your property and ensure public safety.

Whether you're dealing with a hazardous tree or planning a landscaping makeover, hiring a professional tree removal service in Cape Town is a smart investment. From safe removal to environmental compliance, the right team will make the process efficient and worry-free.

The Arborist's Arsenal: Unpacking the Tools and Tricks of Controlled Tree Removal
Beyond the roar of the chainsaw, the world of controlled tree removal is a fascinating blend of specialised equipment and time-honed techniques. It's a profession that demands not just strength, but also precision, problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of physics and mechanics.
Arborists, the skilled professionals in this field, rely on an impressive array of tools and methods to safely and efficiently dismantle trees, often in complex and challenging environments.
Forget the image of a lone figure with an axe. Modern tree removal is a sophisticated operation involving cutting-edge technology and carefully refined procedures. Imagine a team arriving on site with a fleet of vehicles carrying an intriguing assortment of gear – ropes that look like they belong on a sailing ship, machinery that seems purpose-built for giants, and an array of cutting tools designed for specific tasks. Let's delve into the arsenal and artistry behind controlled tree removal.
The Cutting Edge: Chainsaws and Their Kin
At the heart of tree removal lies the trusty chainsaw, but even this seemingly straightforward tool comes in various forms, each suited to specific tasks. From lightweight top-handle saws for in-tree work to powerful ground saws for felling larger trunks, arborists select their cutting tools with precision. They are not just wielding a blade; they are masters of its application, understanding the nuances of different cuts to control the fall of limbs and sections.
Beyond chainsaws, other cutting tools play a vital role. Pole saws, with their extendable reach, allow for the safe removal of higher branches from the ground. Hand saws and loppers are essential for finer work and navigating tight spaces. Each tool is meticulously maintained and sharpened to ensure optimal performance and safety.
The Power of Leverage: Ropes and Rigging
For many controlled tree removals, especially in confined spaces or when dealing with large limbs, ropes and rigging systems are the unsung heroes. Arborists are skilled in the art of knot tying, understanding the strength and application of various knots to create secure anchor points and control the descent of timber.
A complex network of ropes, pulleys, and specialised hardware like carabiners and friction devices allows the team to safely lower even the heaviest branches and trunk sections. These rigging systems act like a controlled counterweight, preventing uncontrolled falls that could damage property or cause injury. Different rigging techniques, such as speedlines and block and tackle systems, are employed depending on the specific challenges of the job.
Reaching New Heights: Climbing Gear and Aerial Lifts
When the work needs to happen high in the canopy, arborists rely on specialised climbing gear. This includes harnesses, climbing lines, ascenders, and descenders, all designed to provide secure and efficient movement within the tree. Climbers are highly trained in tree climbing techniques, ensuring their safety and allowing them to access and dismantle the tree from the top down.
In situations where access allows, aerial lifts (cherry pickers or boom lifts) provide a stable and efficient platform for arborists to work at height. These machines offer increased reach and allow for the safe removal of large sections of the tree without the need for extensive climbing. The choice between climbing and using an aerial lift depends on factors like the tree's structure, accessibility, and the surrounding environment.
Shredding the Evidence: Wood Chippers and Stump Grinders
Once the tree is down, the cleanup begins, and this is where other specialised equipment comes into play. Wood chippers are powerful machines that shred branches and smaller trunk sections into wood chips, reducing the volume of waste and creating a useful byproduct for mulch or other applications. Different sizes of chippers are used depending on the scale of the job.
Stump grinders are another essential piece of equipment for a complete tree removal. These machines use a high-speed rotating cutting wheel to grind the remaining stump down below ground level, eliminating a potential trip hazard and allowing for replanting or other landscaping.
The Gentle Giants: Cranes and Heavy Lifting
For exceptionally large or hazardous trees, especially those in tight urban environments, cranes can be indispensable. These powerful machines allow for the safe and controlled lifting and lowering of large sections of the tree, minimising the risk of damage to surrounding structures. Operating a crane in a tree removal scenario requires highly skilled and experienced personnel, as precision and careful coordination are paramount.
Beyond the Brawn: Diagnostic and Safety Tools
The arborist's toolkit extends beyond just cutting and lifting equipment. Diagnostic tools play a crucial role in the initial assessment, helping to identify hidden decay or structural weaknesses. These might include resistographs (to measure wood density), sound hammers (to detect internal cavities), and even thermal imaging cameras (to identify potential problems).
Safety equipment is, of course, paramount. As discussed in the previous article, this includes personal protective equipment (PPE) like helmets, safety glasses, chainsaw trousers, and harnesses. Communication devices like two-way radios are essential for coordinating the team and ensuring safety on site.
The Art of the Technique: Methods Honed by Experience
Beyond the equipment, the techniques employed by arborists are just as crucial. Felling techniques, used for bringing down entire trees, require a deep understanding of the tree's lean, weight distribution, and surrounding hazards. Precise cuts, often involving a notch and a back cut, are used to control the direction of the fall.
Dismantling techniques, whether by climbing or using an aerial lift, involve a systematic approach to removing the tree section by section. Arborists use their knowledge of tree anatomy and physics to make strategic cuts and safely lower limbs and trunk pieces. Rigging techniques require a thorough understanding of knot tying, load distribution, and the safe working limits of ropes and hardware.
Controlled tree removal is a profession that blends physical skill with technical knowledge. Arborists are not just tree cutters; they are skilled technicians who utilise a sophisticated array of equipment and carefully honed techniques to safely and efficiently manage the removal of trees in a variety of challenging situations.
The next time you see a tree being taken down, remember the unseen arsenal and the expert artistry that makes it a controlled and responsible operation.

Comprehensive Guide to Debris and Tree Removal Services in California
California, with its diverse landscapes and vibrant ecosystems, is no stranger to environmental challenges. From intense wildfire seasons to powerful storms and seasonal winds, the state faces unique risks that can lead to the accumulation of debris and the need for tree removal. Debris removal services and tree removal services are crucial for homeowners, businesses, and municipalities to maintain safety, curb appeal, and environmental health. Let’s explore why these services are necessary, what they entail, and how to choose the right professionals in California.
Why Are Debris Removal Services Important?
Debris removal involves the safe and efficient clearing of trash, fallen branches, leaves, and other waste materials that can accumulate in both residential and commercial properties. In California, where wildfires and high winds are common, debris can quickly pose a serious fire hazard. Dead trees, dry leaves, and loose branches can act as kindling, especially in the dry summer months. Removing debris helps prevent fires, reduces the risk of property damage, and ensures pathways are clear for first responders in case of emergency situations.
Moreover, storm damage can result in large amounts of debris such as fallen trees, broken limbs, and displaced outdoor furniture. In urban areas, debris removal is also vital for maintaining the aesthetics of neighborhoods, improving the safety of walking paths, and preventing clogged drainage systems during heavy rains.
Tree Removal Services in California
California's natural beauty is partially defined by its vast forests and majestic trees. However, not all trees are healthy or safe to keep on your property. Tree removal services are necessary when trees are dead, dying, or pose a threat to surrounding structures, power lines, or roads. This is especially true in areas that are prone to wildfires and severe weather conditions.
Tree removal is often a complex and hazardous process that requires specialized equipment and skilled arborists. Whether it's a large oak in a suburban yard or a leaning tree that risks falling on a power line, professional tree removal services ensure the job is done safely and efficiently. A Tree Service Expert will assess the health of the tree, determine the safest removal strategy, and use tools such as chainsaws, stump grinders, and cranes to remove the tree without damaging surrounding property.
Methods Used in Debris and Tree Removal Services
Debris Removal: Typically, debris removal services start with an assessment of the area. Professionals will identify and categorize debris such as broken branches, fallen leaves, trash, or storm-damaged items. They will then use trucks, blowers, and vacuum equipment to clear away the debris. For larger items or storm damage, heavy-duty machinery like loaders or chippers may be used.
Tree Removal: Tree removal involves a more structured process. A certified arborist will first inspect the tree, considering factors like its proximity to structures, overall health, and any risks posed by its removal. If the tree is deemed dangerous or necessary to remove, the arborist will employ techniques like cutting the tree in sections, using ropes to guide branches safely to the ground, and finally grinding down the stump to prevent regrowth.
Choosing the Right Tree and Debris Removal Services in California
When looking for tree and Debris Removal Services in California, it’s important to select a company with the right qualifications. Here are a few things to consider:
Certification and Insurance: Ensure the company employs certified arborists who are skilled in the safe removal of trees. Proper insurance is also a must to protect against accidents or property damage.
Experience with Local Conditions: California’s unique climate and terrain require a company with experience dealing with local conditions, from wildfires to coastal windstorms.
Customer Reviews and Reputation: Look for reviews and testimonials from past customers. A reputable company will have a proven track record of safety and satisfaction.
Cost and Estimates: While the cheapest option may seem appealing, tree and debris removal can be a hazardous job. It’s often worth investing in a service that offers transparency in pricing and provides detailed estimates upfront.
Conclusion
Debris and tree removal services in California are more than just a matter of aesthetics—they are crucial for safety, fire prevention, and environmental health. Whether dealing with storm damage, wildfire risks, or simple tree health concerns, professional tree and debris removal is the best way to ensure your property remains safe and well-maintained. By choosing experienced and certified professionals, Californians can maintain the beauty and safety of their homes and communities, while also minimizing risks associated with natural disasters.
