HI I AM COMING TO BEG U FOR HELP HOW DO YOU MAP OH MASTER OF ART
HELLO HI I AM HERE TO AID U MY BROTHER IN ARMS!!!
this got very long and i tried to cover things that helped me when first getting into hand drawing maps, but if there's any other places where you're struggling let me know!!!! ive got a lot in my brain im just going from broad to narrow here :)
BIG SCALE:
great ways to make continents that look like continents include
- peeling an orange or equivalent citrus messily and laying out the pieces of peel, and copying those shapes pros: realistic coastlines that would fit together like in real life, if you get into the nitty gritty these can also serve as tectonic plate templates. cons: messy. might not have oranges on hand. can be hard to scale up and transfer to digital - getting some paper and pouring a bunch of doodads of some kind on it, then clumping them in vaguely the shapes you want and tracing the coastlines. things i have used in the past include dry macaroni, beans, dice, and paper stars. pros: potentially less messy than oranges, more control over the shapes, scales up easily cons: coastlines will be less realistic tectonically if that's a concern (for both of those i usually then take a picture of what i get and start editing in my drawing program of choice from there)
other strats to try: taking a grungy brush in your drawing program of choice, making it Huge, and scribbling a few clumps, then on another layer going in and tracing around the edges to make the coastlines. using a map from real life and cutting chunks out and rearranging/copying/warping them to make a collage you can trace for coastlines. etc
SLIGHTLY SMALLER SCALE:
country borders were, until quite recently, determined mainly by geographical obstacles like mountain ranges, rivers, canyons, oceans, etc that are very hard to cross. also borders will be highly disputed when it comes to warring states or eras without, like, satellites and bureaucracy and such!! making them fuzzy or jagged or having areas where both colors mix or stretches of land where no one knows where either country ends is in fact very fun and cool and sexy
mountains usually are chains, and so are islands. i like to make big curves across the world map where i think it would be cool to put mountains, and when those curves extend into oceans i like to put island chains on those as well. if you choose to do whole ass tectonics with your orange then do those on plate borders
biomes can get really specific in their placement if you want to be hyper-realistic, or you can put them wherever you like. personally i like a little realism a little "fantasy world can have whatever you want in it". deserts are usually on one side of mountains, and on the other is really lush. the higher the mountains the larger the areas and more extreme the difference between the two. outside of that case, youll usually get forest > grassland > desert in a gradient. also remember there are multiple kinds of everything
HOW TO DRAW THESE THINGS
good ways to draw rivers include: tracing blood vessels from photos where you can see someone's veins through the skin, dead trees or lightning, or cracks in stone. theyre all fractals and how detailed you want to get is up to you. BUT they always flow downhill and eventually meet the ocean (the ultimate downhill), usually starting in the mountains. also those fractals all go kinda reverse of what you might think; the ends feed into the main river, not the other way around. i used to mess that up a lot
PROTIP: canyons and the like are almost always old riverbeds. use the same method as you do making rivers, just widen the brush, maybe draw a border around the shape instead of just a line
mountains: personally i prefer using premade brushes for mountains just because the one (1) time i did them by hand it took me like four hours for one mountain chain. this video has some tips on different mountain styles if any of those look good to you, otherwise there are about a bajillion videos like that out there!!
biomes in general: just a little texture is usually plenty! doing some bushy edges on deciduous forests, pointy bush edges on pine forests, a few little grass lines and sand dunes, etc etc is usually plenty to get the point across :)
SMALLER SCALE
roads are personally the bane of my existence. i try to treat them like rivers just a little straighter, depending on what time period you're emulating you might go curvier. also they dont care about maintaining width or what direction the fractal goes in humans just put those shits wherever they walk a lot. in contrast railroads are usually pretty straight, simply because trains are built different than cars or wagons or people
cities are almost always on a source of freshwater and a valuable resource that draws people for work in the early days. also they'll have like 10-20x the landmass of the city itself in farms around them, less if theyre on the coast and have access to lots of seafood, more if theyre more landlocked. those farms can be farther away if theyre more industrialized and can transport the food en masse easily. you also dont have to draw the farms just kinda mention them in the story if relevant
towns can be on smaller rivers, lakes, or even just by natural springs. you wont find permanent settlements in places where water isnt accessible (unless you have magic to fix that which is always a cool detail)
EVEN SMALLER SCALE
city maps i have 0 advice on other than roads get thinner the fewer people travel on them, industry will be on a very different side of town than the rich people for smell and noise reasons, and especially when emulating pre-car times, think about how far you would feasibly walk in a day. if you want characters to be able to know pretty much the whole city that they live in, it's gotta be reasonable for them to walk to the farthest edge of their knowledge and back home (or to an inn) in a reasonable timeframe, if they have a home. also big cities tend to have colleges, trade schools, and a bajillion and one jobs that need doing. magic cities might need mages to maintain infrastructure, non-magical cities need people who light the streetlamps when it gets dark, waste disposal is Hugely Important, etc etc etc
it can sound boring at first but coming up with the odd maintenance jobs people have to do in cities can be a really fun creative exercise, and it might inform how the city is laid out, too!!
IN CONCLUSION
think of the world in layers. landmasses + oceans -> biomes and geographical landmarks -> countries and borders -> settlements -> districts. i literally have those on different layers in clip studio so i can futz with them more easily.
also realism is not the be-all-end-all of this. there's lots of room for symbolism and environmental storytelling in maps, as ive ranted about in the past, and stuff doesn't have to make absolute sense in the real world to work well for your world. breaking the rules is like, art 201 and it applies to ever part of the art in question <3
i hope this helped!!!! again pls let me know if you have any more questions i love helping out :D

in the first ask u sent where i talked about him, i forgot to mention what Happened during his first aurora with Darkwalker. his parents had a hunch he was gonna be picked, Darkwalker usually picks sturdy kids that look like they can take a beating (survive out in the wilderness and kill people) and smokey was already a decently outdoorsy 8 y/o. first aurora, darkwalker possesses him and she doesnt attack any people BUT she does kill the family dog (it was growling at her, it knew something was wrong) and that woke their parents up before she could like. jump out a window and find some mainlanders.
also when a vessel is chosen, theyre usually cast out from society. its safer for everyone else that way so that darkwalker isnt as much of a problem for the rest of whereever the vessel is from. what everyone else Doesnt know, however, is that this is how darkwalker thrives. the isolation and ostracization makes it way easier to manipulate her vessel into doing whatever she wants, ie, killing people. if smokey had been accepted by his family and the rest of his town, odds are he wouldnt kill people in his spare time away from auroras cause hed be harder to manipulate around normal people with normal people opinions about mainlanders.
anyways . his sisters try with various attempts of effort to reach out to him when theyre older (and when hes thoroughly manipulated). jazzy and robin try to get in contact with him and he refuses, jazz is more forceful with her attempt and he threatens to attack her cause darkwalkers got it in his head that they dont really give a shit about him, they left him to die when they cast him out. zephyr doesnt really try tho. they know it wasnt his fault but they still resent him for the rift it caused their family and community.
also this is what darkwalkers from <- link to the game wiki about her. its like a challenge scenario thing in The Long Dark. i grabbed her (the game version doesnt have pronouns) and threw her at a theory thing i found on reddit (voices and screaming in the Ash Canyon mines) and came up with the dollar store werewolf aurora thing.
Tumblr media
shes so girlboss queen slay
also smokey doesnt respond to simon at all. like hell ignore u on purpose if u call him that

okay so we know about your Neo 3, mod, but what about your other agents?
(This was the question I wanted to get since I introduced Chevelle lmao thank you!!!)
(So my agents don't follow the same kinda pattern a lotta other people do with theirs!)
(My Captain 3 is named Osprey, Ozzy for short. She's Australian, Aboriginal most likely. Not the brooding type of Captain, but still a massive dweeb. Talks like an anime protag, conductor of the chronic pain train, kinda chipper and more of a mentor to agents like Neo 3 and 4. Likely to kick your beak in if you're being a jerk tho so they're not a pushover. She/they pronouns! About 22/23 still deciding here. Probably Pan, probably Poly, doesnt care about gender. VERY stupid about self care and pushes themself too hard a LOT. Captain of both the NSS but also the squid sisters fanclub. Probably was in a lil fling with each Squid Sister separately at different points. Both ended on good terms!)
(Agent 4 is Polaris, or as Marie calls them "Lari", which makes them f u m e. They also get called Bi-Polar for being an easily ticked off bisexual who can't stick to a gender identity. ADHD/Autism swag is off the charts too. Like this is my lil skrungle who punches people during Turf. Probably has rabies? Ate a raw bird once for 3k G. Has trouble applying themself to anything other than Agent Work, which they love. 20, they/them is their usual pronouns but they'll switch em around with she or he or sometimes it pronouns. Most likely French Canadian if I had to give them a voice. 100% Dated the Fiddler from Bottom Feeders, broke up because she wanted to fight to keep things "fresh".)
(My 8 is Oracle. Former Elite who fell into the Metro after engaging with Captain and Cuttlefish while out on patrol with her partner. She's got quite a checkered past that's actually tied to an oc centric story I'm writing but the short of it is that theyre a clone of an AWFUL scientist from Octo Canyon and she's really trying to distance herself from that. Trans lesbian swag. She/they, cynical and sarcastic but in that big sister kinda way. Highly intelligent, suffers from injuries received during the NILS statue fight and the trials [mostly seizures, migraines, PTSD, and anxiety the poor dear], her and Cap3 are probably an item but won't make it official, shes 24. Enjoys modding weapons and stabs as a warning. Venomous! Pearlina Shipper #1)
(And you all know Chevelle hopefully. If not, they're an orphaned Octoling who got adopted by a Maws [Mamaws]. They didn't wanna be an agent, but felt like Cuttlefish could pay them and then didn't so they were going to back out but then fell into Alterna and the rest is history. Started out super poor and spends time getting money to donate it to other poor kids in Splatsville. REALLY hates Grizzco. Steals eggs back. Sabotaged the copter more than once. Thinks of Deep Cut as bad influence older siblings [gets treated like it too by those 3 like they LOVE Chevy like a sibling]. Very dry-wit, motivated and resourceful. Lil Buddy is basically their adoptive baby brother who eats glue. Ambiguous race for now, though I see them with a bit of a Spanish accent so might be of Latin descent. Can speak Salmonese, Octarian, and Inklish but prefers to be quiet. 18. They/them. Gay gay homosexual gay. Has a crush on Polaris)

im squeezing in a little more zelda and i ran into the painter guy again...what even is the point of him in this game?? lol
its so hard to focus on shrines and not koroks...i use the same map for both!! but i only have two weeks to get them all, so i gotta hustle
hebra is so big and so snowy and i hate it here.
idk what it is. normally i LOVE snowy video game places. but in botw/totk they are the pits.
i might have to do this (hebra) in small doses lol
i made it to the edge of the map! this big canyon was always so freaky to me but then again i'm obsessed with map edges
i love going into caves sometimes lol. it's always like ok. wheres that damn frog
NO......another eventide shrine
ok, im gonna try the labyrinth now maybe?? ugh what if theres HANDS :( but i am just so sick of how big and empty hebra is
theres one of those crystal beam etc quests for this shrine (i got distracted on the way there. its fine). and usually they have parts set out so you can see what vehicle they wanted you to make. this time? the parts are set out as if to make a bike. WAY ahead of you
the problem being ofc that bikes dont carry these well. im sure they wanted me to attach the fans and stick to this little floating platform or whatever but fuck that lol
ok now wait why is this called lomei CASTLE...was that other one called castle in the sky version??? wack
oh boooo i gotta do the land part first :/
i checked and theres hands in there :(
im getting that fucking shrine! the one on top of the ice...one of the first i tried to get. i was so angry to discover that nothing i could do could get me in!! but it's finally time...
YOOOOO we got SLEDDING for this korok seed!! i lov game
lol i think calip is the one leaving these pinecones...? sounds a bit whiny and self involved, anyway
OH MY GOD I SAW THEM...I SAW THE HAND GOOP MOVE........
i thought they would be in the basement but they were on the other side of the bars from the shrine in the center of the maze!!!!!!!!!!!
i can't tell if they despawned or not IM SCARED :(
i thought i heard them but when i went to look i didnt see anything...i hope they dont respawn when i exit this shrine :(
but maybe!!! if theyre up here!!! the basement is fine actually!!!!!!!
"i ruler of owls" wtf does that mean
ok, back 2 the sky before these mf decide 2 respawn. christ. at least i have fast travel
i do really really love diving from sky to depths tho. fucking baller. esp glad to miss the hands <3
and i FUCKING. LOVE. the depths music for labyrinths. it's so FUCKING good. that lower register...mwah
phantom ganon pants HELL yeah
omg wait i can just...walk OUT of here to the depths?? maybe i'll just go get those poes...
missed the poes. went back inside instead to see if i could find the lightroot. found it on top of the maze but then i had to go the wrong way to get to the next one. so. no poes :( it was a big batch but idw walk all the way back lol
ok, snagged my second lightroot. im getting out of here lol
i should stop leaving hands on. i was gonna go get a shrine near a tower, but there's hands there, so actually i'm not doing that. it's better if i don't know!!! but sometimes i get scared and need to check :(
i went to the stable by the great tabantha bridge bc i noticed i missed a well there, and the canyon is full of green fog. i wanna look at that later but the thing i want to do next is check out satori mountain finally...i've been wanting to look for awhile!!
however unfortunately before THAT. i have to go to bed. rip!

👀 am I the the canyon mutual
yes ive talked about you before no it was not about the used. i told my friend whos name im not sure of (gender reasons, i know some things to call them but theyre not sure what they prefer) about “my friend ella whose dog looks a lot like your dog” (also were not really friends i just accidentally clocked them and assumed they knew i knew they were trans when i was supposed to think they were cis. so we are friendly! but not super close. also in my defense cishet people dont usually ask you how you came out so “what about you?” was a perfectly reasonable followup question)
mutuals send me a 👀 and i'll tell you if you've ever come up in any of my irl conversations, and what i referred to you as

22: Do you want to have kids? How many? 23: Do you have piercings? How many?
these questions hit at wildly different levels of serious and/or invasive in the normal human way thats weirdly exempt from the general exclusively absurd or horny oversharing that tends to go down between longtime shitsite devotees but alright i reblogged it if anything not expecting those questions to land was my b
the kid questions both a yes and a no
theoretically id be down for kid/s i think kids are like a dormant untapped cure for depression once they get out of the stage of not doing anything but crying and shitting and get into the stage of talking and conveying ideas and wanting to share shit with the world youd be hard pressed to find even an adult whose career is to create like a novelist or some shit with the unbound imagination of any kid on the street and not to get wangsty on main but i had that shit broken out of me like a white middle school girl breaks the fury of a wild spirited horse in a straight to dvd disney movie so its a life experience i envy
kids deserve the world and i think more people need to be having kids because they want to make a kid really fucking happy and see them grow into somebody thatll make the world brighter than the other dumbass reasons people have kids like to have someone take care of them when theyre old or some other self serving horseshit
but as far as the way my lifes going right now theres not a chance in hell id actually have a kid
see the above explanation of how being a genuinely good parent and providing your kid with the resources and emotional enrichment they need is paramount to everything else possibly related to the subject
pushing aside the fact i dont have a partner to have a kid with biologically because its 2019 and having your kids the old fashioned way is a preference between said partners at most and irrelevant otherwise and as much as i think having two parents is probably beneficial to the roundedness of said kids upbringing because theyre being taught by people who have different personal experiences and a wider range of ideas its not going to hurt them not to and in any hypothetical scenario where the stuff im about to say doesnt apply id totally do it by myself
im not cut out to actually do the parent thing
i know my hearts in the right place for it or whatever i know how to raise a kid the right way and i also know i cant actually execute any of that
i live in a van and jump from city to city as a hobby during my off season and then jump city to city for business when im on an assignment and those take me into deserts and swamps and bogs and burning hot canyons and shit
the total amount of free time i have during most of the year comes out to about fucking zilch and what free time i do have usually gets wasted doing nothing productive or on the rare occasion im feeling zesty is just drug addled and probably dangerous
and im irresponsible as fuck
time and i dont get along so anything with time constraints or an expectation of reasonable pacing ive probably already fucked up by way of losing hours or scrambling dates or something
sometimes ill forget to eat for three days because no regular people were around to make me realize oh shit three days have passed look at all these things youre supposed to have done in that timeframe to still be considered functional
i cant do much about it and if i could i wouldnt care to cause i just dont fucking care clearly the loss doesnt bother me but im not going to subject any other living breathing thing to my fucking dismal lack of attempt to keep a routine much less an actual human child
do i want kids yeah kids are dope but would i have kids abso fucking lutely not unless i retired thirty years early and moved to a white fence house in the burbs with my beautiful wife stacy which i can say with 110% certainty is not gonna happen
piercings i can fuck with though lets lighten up with that
ive got four on my face counting my earlobes and and two not on my face that ill leave up to the readers imagination
if you can guess where they are ill give you twenty dollars

WORLD!!! BUILDING!!! 2!!!! CITIES!!!
Every group of magic has it's own city, the elemental magics gave smaller communities, but Moon and Star magics have big cities. The exception to this is the Central, which is the biggest city by a long shot and has no real dominant Magic Descendent.
So!! Cities!!!
ELEMENTAL COMMUNITIES!!!!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥FIRE!!!
The Fire Tribes are probably the smallest community as a whole, with only about a 7000 Monsters in total. The Fire Tribes are actually a collection of smaller Tribes that all live in the Gold Forest, each with their own individual leader.
The Fire Tribes don't have a king or chief or anything, but they have a representative who speaks for the whole in political settings and will make announcements that they've decided on. The current Representative is Lectri, she is from a long line of pure elemental descent, which means her appearance is different from most people on the star side of the scale. Pure Elemental types are usually bug like, so she looks like a bee. Lectri is flashy and love attention, but I ultimately very level headed and fair. She has an unrivalled confidence and loves her tribes more than anything.
The tribes live in hollowed out trees, underground tunnels, but mostly inside of igloos. Different tribes prefer different kinds of housing. A large amount of Igloos are built around the hollowed trees, giving an extra room for free. They mainly hunt for food, and have designated hunting grounds. Farmers will help the animals on these grounds grow and live and reproduce before hunting them, and they make sure to keep the balance of the natural ecosystem in tact.
WATARRRRRRR
House Aquele is the second smallest community, having about 10000 Monsters.
It's ruled by Lady Froselle. She’s a curt and very regal women, despite being a less powerful ruler she still commands respect. One would assume she was pureblooded, but her heritage is actually a strange hodgepodge of magic, which is why she has a coat of thick fur, despite that generally being a trait of starry descent. Her heritage is often a subject of gossip, she was elected democratically by her people, but some citizens think they should of someone of pure Water descent as a ruler.
House Aquele is set in a large frozen cavern. Almost the entire city is under water. They build homes on the seafloor, and many live in small natural caves. This might seem like a more unadvanced way of living, but the House still manages to make it refined. With fine carvings in faces of caves, and beautiful weighted furniture, everything from the plants to the ice that surounds it is a sight to behold.
GRRRRAAaAAASSSsssSsSsss
The Gilded Canyon is the biggest community among the Elemental types by quite the long shot, with about 30000 people. It resides in a large circular canyon that encases The Great Gilded Tree, which is how it got its name. The Canyon has a large amount of hotsprings, so many that the combined heat makes it easily the warmest natural location in Overfall.
The leader of the Canyon is the Flower Dancer. She is unique among the elemental leaders, as she is the only one who wasn’t elected to lead, but was rather born to lead due to the fact she has Spirit Magic. Only a quater of her magic is spirit, but this combined with the fact that Grass magic is the most balanced of all magic types, she’s almost as strong as the demi gods. The Flower Dancer is elusive, most have never seen her in person, yet very few canyon citizens seem to have negative opinions on her. She mostly lets her subjects do as they please, she will only get involved when someone is actively harming others, when this happens, many say theyre never seen again. The Flower Dancer spends her days casting spells through her unique way of dance, making the canyon the place with the most fooliage in Overfall by quite the long shot.
The Canyon is lush with the unique cold-resistant flora that resides in Overfall. Homes are built into the cliff faces, with wodden rope bridges and thick tree trunks connecting the buildings. The whole place is illuminated by bioluminescent plants and fungi.

Arplis - News: Hollywood on the Hudson: At Home in Upstate, New York, with Amanda Pays and Corbin Bernsen
Weve been following Amanda Pays and Corbin Bernsen for years as they leapfrogged around LA. Amanda is an actress-turned-interior designer who has been on a decades-long remodeling tear. Her partner in the overhauling business is her husband: theyve lived in 25 places in their 31 years of marriage (along the way, they had four sons), and Corbinthough busy acting, writing, and running his own production companyis a Star Handyman.
After being MIA for a while, they recently resurfaced: When Finley, the youngest of our four, graduated high school and took off for NYC, Corbin and I looked at each other and agreed it was time for another adventure, she wrote. Our book, Open House, had just been released, so we decided to sell up in LA and take a book-signing drive across the country in search of our next project. They made it all the way to the Hudson Valley, where Amandas old friend Priscilla Woolworth has resettled, along with a surprising number of other LA defectors. After experiencing their familys first white Christmas, they decided to stay put.
They knew exactly what to do next: find a structure waiting to be given the Amanda/Corbin treatment. After four weeks of real estate hunting, they bought an 1880s little farmhouse in Germantown, New York, that needed everything. They camped out in a loft rental in nearby Hudson, found a local contractor, and started the demo. Weather dictates a lot here, which was an eye opener for us coming from Californiaand also learning that life has a slower pace here; love that, says Amanda. Heres what the place looks like a year later.

Hands-on creativity runs in the family: two sons work as art directors/production designers in LA., another is in the start-up side of tech, and the youngest is at NYU film school.
The couple bought the house from third-generation owners (who live nearby and were selling when their mother passed away). It had been pale yellow with a front door that was purple and white with a bit of turquoise thrown in, says Amanda. Its now painted a greenish-charcoal called Deep River and the door is Grand Canyon Red, both from Benjamin Moore. Upstate gentrifiers have been accused of defaulting to noirish exteriors, but Amanda defends the choice: its a classic color that draws attention to the architecture and looks great against the backdrop of all these seasons. Plus for every dark house, there are ten white farmhouses around here. Photograph by Jessica Dube.

Theyve become part of a community thats big on bartering: Amanda Westby, co-owner of Alder & Co, employs Amanda as a model in exchange for clothes (Amanda also took most of the photos shown here), and Amanda says she recently gave her doctors husband remodeling advice for medical care.
Im continually struck by the adventure of this new experience and discovering an entire life so different from palm trees, beaches, convertibles, and eternal sunshine, Corbin recently wrote on Facebook. My biggest problem, I guess, if Im allowed to go there, is that I have tons of time to think without all the distractions that Im used to.And when the snow falls, its even more quiet than the normal quiet that Im getting used to. You can hear your heartbeat, literally or perhaps thats the shoveling of snow forcing blood through my veins.
Above: The back doors and basement bulkhead are also Benjamin Moore Grand Canyon Red: I knew if I was going with dark monotone windows, I had to find a place to uplift, says Amanda.
She learned about remodeling historic houses from her father, who was an actor-turned agent and the original house flipper in the family: I grew up in southeast England, and he used to drag me around to look at properties and would ask my opinion. So the whole house buying, fixing-up, reselling thing came from my childhood. And Corbin, coincidentally, learned carpentry from his mother and uncle.
Above: The front door opens to the original staircase: as it was, the door banged into the stair, says Corbin. We fixed that and had to reproduce some of thebalusters. Amanda bought the paintinga 1951 work by Brazilian Constructivist Lygia Clark30 years ago while filming a movie in Brazil. The zinc umbrella and cane holder is a long ago LA swap meet purchase.
Amanda tells us: Weve been at this practically since our first date, when Corbin showed me his house that he had just finished himself, and I said, I think were going to have to make some changes. It was full-blown Santa Fe-style and needed some tweaking and layeringsome soul. The English in me came out, and thats when we started blending our styles, and buying and selling things.

This isnt something they recommend, but it worked well: even the chipping looks authentic. I used a heavy Kilz primerno sandingfollowed by two coats of Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray in a satin finish.
Amanda found the center island marble slab on Craigs List for $150 and drove two hours in a U-Haul to get it.
Above: The dining table is one of several pieces that the couple found during their first pilgrimage to the Brimfield flea market. We arrived in the rain witha list of items we needed, including maximum and minimum measurements for each piece, says Amanda.
Corbin bought the tablemaybe originally a schoolhouse piece, definitely Europeanusing money he had saved from the many years his mother tucked bills in his Christmas stocking. I finally realized I dont have to worry about never having a buck in my hand, and decided to honor my late mother with a table that we love.
