chatter emits from every corner of the home, various people mingling as if the world outside held little significance. as if war was not raging and people were not dying. she supposes she's guilty of it too, the way she glides through the home, conversing with ease and enjoying most of the attention she receives from those seeking her affections until she's forced to bite her tongue upon mentions of rebels in the manner of which they are discussed. it pains her to do so, never one to not let her opinions be known but there were more important things at play she had to be aware of. no matter how favored she was or what protections seemingly were granted her by her uncle, such sentiments as she truly held would do her no favors when she remained the daughter of who most saw as traitors. she had to think about her little sister too, sweet meggie, so innocent and unable to even recall their parents. her position could be precarious if she was not careful but it could also be an advantage all the same if only she could find means to use it.
there are common people about, though elena is certain each one in attendance has been granted such for a reason. they'd surly held something of benefit be it resources or otherwise of which afforded them connections to the others present. there are officers too, those not out on battlefields and waging this horrid war. her uncle and by extension elena, her little sister meggie, and aunt judith traveled there with him as he had been called to the town. she remains in idle chatter with sue. oh, how she wished she still had meredith and bonnie at her side they would have saved her from the last ten minutes of sue's talking. she's only saved from such when sue's husband approaches them from behind, clearing his throat and seeking to introduce the man he's been speaking with on manners unknown.
Tumblr media
elena turns, golden hair catching the light making it appear almost as if it's glowing. she offers a polite greeting toward sue's husband before her gaze falls upon the man next to him. she intakes a breath but doesn't let out. her eyes widen in surprise. she hasn't seen him in a few years at least, not since before their worlds had been turned upside down by conflict but she knows him. oh she would know his face anywhere even if his eyes now hold something they once hadn't. something older. her ears begin ringing and she suddenly feels as if she's going to faint all at once. the man's name is offered though she hears it as if she is underwater. still, she is positive of one thing. the name does not belong to the man before her. she does not understand fully what is transpiring before her. the last she'd been able to uncover the tallmadges had been of the same mind as her parents and had joined washington's forces. which meant--
'dear girl, are you alright?' sue's husband is speaking to her and she realizes she's failed to speak, finally allowing her breath to exhale as she schools her features into the perfect embodiment of that which she chooses to display. "i apologize, i believe i must have turned too quickly." she states, opening her fan as if to say the heat had gotten to her. then she turns toward tallmadge and offers a bright and confident smile. "it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." she does not expose him, and heaven help her she does not feel any form of guilt for such. "i do hope you have been allowed some time to enjoy such an occasion and not all talk has been business." she speaks to both men though her gaze remains upon tallmadge, an innocence playing across her features and comment.
'do not worry ms. gilbert. i promise i am not a complete bore. we just finished such talk and i sought to rejoin my wife before she admonishes me for leaving her too long to her own devises.' there's a knowing look upon his features shared with elena, as if he knows as well as she that once sue got started she could have whomever she was speaking with there for an hour regaling them.
Tumblr media
"who am i to keep mrs. carson from such an attentive husband? if only we all could hope for such a thing." elena replies with ease she does not feel considering the situation around her, offering sue a smile and closing her fan as the woman moves to stand next to her husband. she takes the opportunity when it is presented even if perhaps it is a bit bold toward a seeming stranger. anyone which knew elena knew once she set her sights upon something, she would often get her way even if such sights were the attention of a stranger at a party. and why should any stranger deny the attentions of a beautiful girl? especially when he was decidedly not a stranger even if the others present knew not such. she did not think it vain to acknowledge she was one of the most agreeable woman in the home at present for a variety of reasons.
"perhaps this good sir would do me the honor of his company as we turn about the party?" she steps forward with a showy sweet smile and the expectation of him offering her his arm, but her blue hued gaze focused upon him is pleading. despite outward appearances to anyone else about her loyalties, surly the fact she was playing along with his alias told him she was not his enemy, that she was still the girl who equally talked brightly to him outside church as she played with some of the town's children yet was admonished by him too at times when they were younger. please we need to talk ben, she thinks. this may be her only chance.

the morning, having come off a long evening during which she herself had a meeting with washing.ton followed by alden, had caused frustration to lace most of her existence the last few hours prior to her decision to seek the major out. another meeting of her own had been conducted this morning with alden providing fresh word from mrs. morgan which had been less than ideal. an acceleration of a plan had now been required and she had saw to it that molnar had left camp with a company not an hour before to see it done. the following hour, however, had been less tense, at least within the grand scheme of things. she'd entered back into her space with her light hues washing over a chest and come to some sort of decision. an item about the size of a larger book is wrapped in a cloth in her arms when she meets him outside his tent, worry creasing her features for a moment before he begins to respond. that is when katarzyna's features begin to cool in response, hold tightening on the item in her hold as if a means to keep her own emotions in check.
'don't you already know?'
know what?
there is a multitude of meanings the major could be referring to though she believes she's aware of which once once she allows the shock of his coolness to wear off. this must have to do with the conversation she'd held with the general the day before though the timetable presented for such a mission as he presented her with had been unclear the day before (clearly it was no longer unclear). yet she fails to see what reason tallmadge could have to be so angered by such for if they were truly to work together what reason should he have not to allow her to meet with one of those spying for him. especially if she was expected to share her own information with him from her own?
'seeing how his excellency has been cluing you in to our tactical plans before myself as of late, i would've thought this would be why you're here.'
until his following comment washes over her. that was it, wasn't it? she knew things he did not and it angered him. it angers her too, or rather his tone does as she follows him into the tent, thankful that the child is not there presently. idly she wonders if it angered him more that he wasn't being informed of certain things when others were or if it was because his excellency was speaking about it with a woman? somewhere in the back of her mind the witch knows she can not entirely fault tallmadge for something he is unaware of. that her actual position within her forces is still unclear to him even if washing.ton is well aware (and if washington approves of such or not, he has accepted it as what such is to provide him his alliance). that does not halt the ice-filled and tone which leaves her lips in response though.
"i actually came here to bring you this--"
the item in her arms is dropped, not roughly but not entirely gently either, onto his cleared desk still wrapped in cloth. she'd mentioned before that she held a copy of sun tz.u's art of war in it's original dialect and while she knows he could not read it she had intended to offer him the chance to look at it and perhaps read some of it to him with his own copy as reference. after all, he had offered to teach her of a language she did not know, even if such would have been done with auggie present. this was how she saw fit to return the favor. now however, she's beginning to regret such a notion.
"--because i thought you might like to see it."
Tumblr media
there is a harshness to her, a glare given to the wrapped book itself as if it burned her before falling up toward the major who she's now standing next to by the desk. she holds her ground, stance firmly in place, confident and perhaps defiant. men and woman had been punished for less of a tone with her. but he was not one of those under her command and she knows, even if she must keep reminding herself, that he can not be faulted for his lack of understanding. it's entirely infuriating and yet perhaps more of an indication of why he should not be informed of such, at least until he presents himself ready to accept it.
'i'm supposed to go check on abe -- by myself, might i add -- but w.ashington has suddenly decided that you need to come along.'
this is new information. katarzyna knew the town the general wished for her to go to with the major from their conversation of which also spoke of her own presence there prior, her own spies of which could help the cause though names had not been discussed. she imagined that would be worked out between her and the major or when they arrived and would meet with those allies they had. it seemed a benefit to have her join the major. no matter how one looked upon it, a crossover of their allies would have to transpire and it would only aid the cause if she could see where his lived and such be able to send a critical message quickly if needed. the new information in question however is the name. abe. it makes her eyes widen briefly before she lets out a calming breath. surely there was more than one abe in the town. he could not be referring to cabbage man.
'it's too dangerous. you're not a spy, zyna -- you're not even one of my men, so this is a fool's errand. please…'
anger rises back within her before his use of a nickname seems to cause her pause enough to actually listen to his words. has he ever referred to her such before? now she finds a strange mix of emotions playing at her. he has managed to insult her and express worry for her in the same breath. had he not seen what she had been capable of before that first night they met or even when they fought that horrid creature of a witch in the woods? surly if it was dangerous for anyone, it was more dangerous for him who held no powers to get him out of such a situation if he was caught. knowledge of her rank or not, would he ever see her for what she was truly capable or would they continue this dance for the entirety of the war? still, it is difficult to remain completely cross with him when there is a genuineness to the fact he is misguidedly attempting to keep her safe when he turns softer and looks upon her and asks her to reason with his commander.
god, why was benjamin tall.madge such an infuriating man? why could she simply not be cross with him and that be that?
Tumblr media
"i'll put aside that you still seem to think i am unable to protect myself from danger." her tone is somewhat softer but still offended in a way she can not hide, turning matter-of-fact as she speaks again. "you're wrong though. it's not a fool's errand. i have my own spies in set.auket whom i imagine the general wishes you to meet and i have an alias there as well. if someone sees me, though i would rather them not at this time, a reason can be made for such unlike you. i'm afraid i can not reason with him when his logic for us to go together is sound. and-- "
this next piece of information would either serve to make him more angered or he would see the benefit of such.
"i know you do not seem to like seeing magic--"
she knows he understands that magic is not the same across the board at least in some sense as they have not actually bridged the gap in speaking topic, his own way of treating her especially after dealing with the incident in the woods and his willingness to let auggie play with cora and furgus said as much but she also knows he is still getting used to the idea of magic in a positive context and that would take time. she just wished, well, she's not entirely sure what she wished or why it mattered to her what he thought.
"--but if i see where this abe lives and he can be convinced that such is not evil i have means to pass communications to him quickly and directly but i must be able to see the place for such to work."

as morning light found it's way through the window and katarzyna felt the sudden loss of contact of his body against hers, she began to stir. she felt sore in both pleasant ways that brought a flush to her skin as she recalled the events which had transpired in this room and unpleasant ways as she recalled what had happened prior. it was a strange flurry of emotions which welled within her. happiness and anger of two different sources. what marks would she find once she rose to look into her looking glass? battle wounds were nothing to her now, yet these would be a reminder. she had let her guard down and she had failed a heed longwei's teachings. it mustn't happen again. she thinks, a silent vow as she opens her eyes to watch benjamin and finally follows suit. there's an energy buzzing in the air around her as she moves, her senses alight with it once more. she doesn't feel ill or weak. she doesn't feel disconnected from nature but embraced in it.
katarzyna nearly hums as she sorts out her uniform. no, she does not seek the dress she had wore the night before that was much worse for wear, or even any dress similar; she chooses what she should have been wearing the entire time. there had been a purpose in her effort prior, to attempt to seem to fit in more than she would have since she traversed washington's camp as much as her own. however such had not prevented the events of the night before and the fact remained, katarzyna was allied with washington and as such held loyalty to him, but she was not under his sole authority in the same fashion others were. she held her own forces. she was a part of them. she did not need others to fully accept her even if they should question her appearance as all that mattered was the trust and partnerships she did hold with washington's circle. it was time to halt pretenses and be who she was. and to show hickey who she was too. he and the other man may have been able to gain the advantage over her when she was in a weakened state. but katarzyna was a force to be reckoned with and to that point so was benjamin.
Tumblr media
speaking of.. light hues drift toward him again upon his utterance, her finishing securing the outer layer of her dark uniform though she had yet to get to her messy hair. "i should hope so. between us he will reveal his alliances." she states confidently, before feeling the energy around her and calling out to her previously missing shadows as if they were children being called home. "or he will die for them." she states, allowing her shadows to manifest between them in a kind of humanoid cloud that suddenly disperses a moment later as if mimicking death. then she moves forward, toward benjamin until she can feel the warmth of his body radiating off him. she raises her hand to the side of his face feeling comfort in their newfound closeness.
"if i had known all i needed was a night with you to regain my powers and strength, we'd have already had many nights like last." her tone is light, teasing, almost playful even if the matter of discussion is serious. of course, katarzyna knew it was a variety of factors which allowed her to finally regain her strength. the temporary loss of her powers had been just that: temporary. however, she could not discount the weight of what they had shared and the evidence it laid forth to her previous theories. if they truly had called to each other in some way, their essences over time, having come together now. then perhaps he did have something to do with her present state. life giving life. energy shared. magic and nature worked in many ways perhaps they were not meant to understand.
"i'll have to speak with a few of my people first. there should be a few reports for me downstairs. it will not take long but i do not know how long our interrogation will last. i should do this before we go." she considers a moment, before speaking again. "you can be there. with me." trust. it was trust which exudes from her tone and words. a trust she wasn't sure others may have for him but they would accept her trust in him. they had to. "perhaps it's time you understood some of my people's side of things." of course, she does not expect to spend long on this, not right now. not when they still had hickey to attend to but she feels, perhaps, allowing him to be present for the small meeting she'd have to have before she could leave the residence would illustrate something. if nothing else, he'd see the base designs of their campaign from their maps and mock ups. it was the same land and towns and terrain but a very different war and her willingness to allow him to see any of this proved the level of trust she was affording him.

Why Did The Law Constrain Them Now?
Way back when, I spotted a great parodic bumper sticker during the 2008 presidential campaign. It read: "Bush/Cheney '08: Why Should The Law Stop Us Now?"
Yesterday in Allen v. Milligan, the Supreme Court defied expectations and, in a 5-4 ruling, preserved some semblance of a Voting Rights Act by striking down Alabama's congressional maps as illegally racially gerrymandered. Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Kavanaugh "crossed the aisle", so to speak, and now everyone is trying to figure out why (for Roberts in particular, whose hostility to voting rights long predates his time on the Court).
It is a sign of our cynical era that virtually nobody thinks the answer is "because they felt this was the right legal answer." This is especially striking because, when a justice does vote against their presumed ideological proclivities, that would seemingly spawn a greater inference that they genuinely believed in their position's formal legal correctness. If they faced the happy coincidence of "the law supports the defendant" and "I, personally, support the defendant", why wouldn't they raise a glass to their good fortune and vote accordingly?
But on the constitutional law listserv I'm a member of, everybody seems to think that this is some political legitimacy play. The conservative members cannot fathom that their preferred outcome is not legally correct; they think that Roberts and Kavanaugh voted in some ill-conceived attempt to "store political capital" and stave off allegations that the Court has become a six-member right-wing wrecking ball. Needless to say, they hold such a practice with nothing but contempt; they think Roberts and Kavanaugh are squishes. The liberals in the group, of course, do think the outcome is legally correct, but they too seem to think it's fanciful that something as trifling as "the law compels it" motivated Roberts' and Kavanaugh's votes. After all, they might ask, after years of taking a flamethrower to settled judicial doctrine and longstanding precedents in service of a hard-right agenda, why should the law have constrained them now? They also don't give much, if any, credit to the justices for any "legitimacy" chits they might have thought they earned.
It is hard for me not to credit the cynicism here. But if I were to craft a non-, or at least less-, political explanation for Roberts' and Kavanaugh's votes, it would be to distinguish between the millenarian and Burkena conservative impulses seen on the Court.
The former is the pull of reactionary revolution -- you see the promised land, and are ready to chop down anything in your path that poses a barrier to reaching it.  In this mode, the Court's conservatives will burn down precedent, torch settled expectations, and tank the Court's political legitimacy in pursuit of a vision of idealized legal conservatism that they insist is right and true. "The heavens may fall that justice be done." Millenarianism is the impulse that yielded Dobbs, Bruen, and Kennedy, the new "major questions" doctrine and the possible overturning of Chevron, the prospective end to affirmative action and the stunning plausibility of adopting the Independent State Legislature doctrine. Radical alterations of law with unknown and unknowable consequences, in deference to abstract right-wing legal theory and/or concrete right-wing political results. Thomas, Alito, Barrett, and Gorsuch all seem to be in thrall with the millenarian vision, albeit with perhaps slightly different visions of what utopia should look like.
The Burkean mode, by contrast, is the mode of caution, prudence, and restraint. It shies from radical change, it is cognizant of the many things it doesn't know. Recognizing the complexity of the legal machine it oversees, the Burkean conservatives are reluctant to fiddle with the dials too readily. They're willing to trim and cut, but look skeptically upon sweeping change. This impulse, at least, is found in Roberts' Dobbs concurrence, the mifepristone stay, and the so-far unwillingness to endorse any of the yearly crackpot attempts to kneecap the Affordable Care Act. It is not about liberal outcomes (as my placing Roberts' Dobbs opinion in the category should make clear); in other times, Burkeanism might operate as a voice of restraint against sweeping progressive legal victories (recall Roberts' Obergefell opinion). But on this Court, the realistic choices are between radical right-wing change and upholding the status quo -- it's hard to think of a single example of a Court ruling since Barrett's ascension that actually represents change (radical or otherwise) in a progressive direction (the liberal "victories" have generally taken the form of "managing to hold the line against a conservative assault").
On the current Court, Roberts and Kavanaugh have been most susceptible amongst the conservatives to the Burkean impulse, albeit typically in no more than halting fashion. But it's more than just naked political appeasement or trying to impress the libs (neither justice, I think it is fair to say, has shown either much interest or much success in garnering even begrudging liberal admiration). Burkeanism is a branch of conservatism too, and it shouldn't surprise that within the conservative coalition there would be those who find it comparatively more appealing. Some conservatives look at the messianic fervor that has gripped their compatriots and get antsy. They certainly feel the temptation. But ultimately, they are not quite so keen to smash the machine; they are not quite so confident they understand the fallout. And so, periodically, they step back from the abyss, and restrain themselves. Perhaps that's what happened here.

celebrate the rejects! (voyd)
songs to play while you smash the system and burn the whole world down
@into-the-voyd
[listen here]
--
Tracklist and highlighted lyrics below <3
T-Rex
Celebrate the rejects (Hey, hey) Eviscerate the presets (Presets) Power is my thesis (Power, power) Crimson on my lips, when I smile I'm a T-Rex
Hey, yeah! I did start this playlist after I made the connection that Karen and Drakken were absolutely giving me Nimona-Ballister vibes. So, there’s a lot of songs from the Official Nimona Soundtrack on here… and you know what, it rules, so! Any song that starts with “celebrate the rejects!” is a Karen song for sure.
Raise Your Glass
So raise your glass if you are wrong In all the right ways All my underdogs We will never be never be, anything but loud And nitty gritty dirty little freaks
So, I actually had “So What” on here at first, but then I realized, no! The P!nk song for Karen is “Raise Your Glass” which is all about celebrating the “dirty little freaks” and the people who don’t fit in! I think this is a very idealistic version of what Karen believes, ie celebrating the things that make us difference and the underdogs of society! Maybe this is where they started out before they got into Crime ™.
Rebel Girl
When she walks, the revolution's comin' In her hips, there's revolution When she talks, I hear the revolution In her kiss, I taste the revolution
Please take this as a gender neutral version and accept it as the queer punk anthem that it’s supposed to be. I simply think that Karen would be jazzed with being described as someone with revolution in their hips. I need ten more words here so we’re going to pretend this sentence is relevant.
Because I’m Awesome
They say I'm gifted, uh huh Well I'm a certified prodigy I'm gonna own you, uh huh I'm gonna bring you to your knees
Another Nimona song! I really love this one. It’s such a bop, and I can see Karen confidently saying all of these things. I didn’t highlight this particular lyric, but there’s one line that lives rent free in my head forever that goes “I always tell you how great you smell // It's 'cause I'm naturally deodorized.”
One Two Punch
I'm a hit, I'm a one-two punch A slam dunk kind of total rush I'm a hit, I'm a hit, I'm a one-two punch Here's the thing, this is open and shut There's no one like me, look it up I've got a song to blare and a reputation to keep up
And another Nimona song! Woo! Now we’re doing a bit of transition simply from #empowering #revolution #outcast songs into something more… concrete. Hitting and punching and actually breaking stuff in order to enact that change that they want for the world! Let’s go! Punch stuff woo! There’s no one like Karen!
You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid
Nice work you did You're gonna go far, kid
This just feels like something someone told Karen after their first MAFIA mission. They’re gonna go far. This is one of those songs that is so specifically about something (in this case… Lord of the Flies, did you know that???) that it’s actually incredibly universal and I feel like I can every character into either “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid” or “You’re On Your Own, Kid.” Karen, obviously, is the former.
Heads Will Roll
Off, off, off with your head Dance, dance dance til you're dead
We’re having fun! We’re promising violence, but mostly we’re having fun! Let’s go! I’m so sorry that we keep assigning 50 words per song for these things, sometimes it’s just pure vibes, you know? What else do I have to say than this is about violence but also a bop?
Shinigami Eyes
Are you ready to die? Got my Shinigami eyes on Everything is fine Got my Shinigami eyes
This is about Death Note, which in case you are not familiar with, involves an edglord teen who decides he gets to decide who is worthy of living and dying and kills who he deems “bad” by writing their names in a book. I think, at least. Anyway — Karen would enjoy having the Death Note, let’s be real.
Kill V. Maim
I got in a fight, I was indisposed I was in despite all the wicked prose But I'm only a man And I do what I can I got friends in high places, I get out for free I got in a fight but they don't know me 'Cause I'm only a man And I do what I can
Listen, I wasn’t a Grimes Enjoyer till I read her description of this song which was "Kill V. Maim" is written from the perspective of Al Pacino in The Godfather: Part II. Except he's a vampire who can switch gender and travel through space.” And then I was like, oh, okay! I get it! Anyway, that just seemed very Karen.
There Will Be Blood
When you're begging and on your knees That's when I get a sweet release You can't run from your destiny (there will be-) I've been dying to feel alive And your pain is my paradise So tonight, you gon' pay the price (there will be-)
Yeah! Violence! Fun! On the dance floor! In retrospect, maybe I could’ve also added Murder on the Dancefloor here, but maybe not! It’s here in spirit. Maybe as a bonus track with some of the second choice songs. Why the heck not? If you made it this far, it’s like the Taylor Swift hidden tracks or whatever.
(Anyway, there’s five bonus tracks here! Have fun!)

Immortality and Nymphs Pt. II
Tumblr media
(Philza x reader)
Kisses. God Phil missed your kisses against his skin most of all, you were always so warm and gentle. He couldn’t wait for you to be a constant in his life once again, he walked all three of you back to his home. Wilbur was eyeing you the entire time almost like he was trying to find the differences between himself and you, thinking, The boy looked much more like himself than he did you, but there were tiny similarities here and there. You didn’t seem to mind though when he asked you questions you answered them truthfully. Once they arrived back at his house Wilbur stood up a little straighter,
“As much as I’d like to stay and talk more, Fundy and I need to get going.” He trailed off a little looking at you, “I still have thousands of questions but I have a revolution to plan.” Wilbur continued as you raised a questioning eyebrow, Phil’s wings ruffled a little as he cleared his throat.
“You should come back next week with the others.” Phil gave a slight nod of his head, “I’ll send a crow to Techno.” Fundy was the one to whip his head and nod eagerly, Wilbur adjusted his glasses but eventually nodded.
“That should work.” Wilbur turned to face you taking a shaky breath, “I’ll see you then?” A tender smile spread across your lips as you reached out to cup Wilbur’s cheeks.
“I’m not going anywhere again baby boy,” You whispered as he flushed hesitantly leaning into your touch “I promise.” He pulled away, clearing his throat taking Fundy’s hand as he waved.
“Bye, grandpa! Bye, grandma!” The fox hybrid called and Phil watched as you flushed deeply. Phil wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you close, his wings spreading around your body like a cocoon. You giggled softly as he nuzzled his face into your neck, his beard prickled your skin, you missed the feeling.
“Fundy seems sweet,” You mused as the man behind you kissed the skin of your neck. Phil only hummed in agreement which caused you to laugh, “you’re so not paying attention to what I’m saying are you?”
“What?” You burst into laughter at his genuine confusion, “Come on now. I missed you, can you blame me? You’re distracting.” Phil let out a little huff as you pulled away to face him,
“Then show me how much you missed me my crow,” You purred running your fingers through his feathers, you felt his entire body shiver as his breathing hitched. His fingers dug into your hips,
“Careful. They’re sensitive and wouldn't want a pretty thing like you to get hurt.” Phil teased pressing his forehead against yours,
“Oh, I remember.” You winked teasingly as Phil leaned in to swallow your words with a blistering kiss. He felt you melt against his body as his wings fluffed up, both of you poured all your love and admiration for each other into one another. It was then Phil knew nothing changed between the two of you even after all these years apart, there was still the same amount of love and longing you always shared. Phil lifted you into the air and you hooked your legs around his waist, he felt young again, back in the forest by his old home. He felt you giggle against his lips and pull away to rest your forehead on his own, he chased your lips almost desperately. Your hand came up to cup his cheek and he closed his eyes to lean into his palm, “Take me inside first.” You murmured and his eyes lit up mischievously.
“If I remember correctly you never had a problem with making out in the woods before.” He watched your face turn beat red as he smirked proudly, he adored getting you flustered which way to Sunday.
“Yeah well, I’ve lived in the woods all my life. I think I’m ready to stay with my adoring lover in his house, is that really such a bad thing?”
“No. I’d never be opposed to something like that, not when I’ve missed you this much. It’s all I’ve ever wanted, living with you and raising Wilbur, being a family.” He watched you visibly wince and guilt ebbed at his heart, “Hey, hey you had to do what you needed to. I’d rather have you alive and here now than dead or worse.” Phil reassured and you seemed to relax a little bit in his arms,
“I wish I could’ve been here to raise Wilbur with you...I wish I could’ve seen him grow up.” Your voice wavered a little as Phil pulled you close, he hesitated slightly trying to find the right words to say.
“I wish you were there too. But you’re here now, you’re safe and that’s what matters. Plus…” His cheeks flushed a soft pink, “we could always try again.”
“Jesus Christ Phil,” you giggled covering your mouth with your hands and he looked embarrassed. “I just got home Crow, let's give it some time. But...I’m not opposed in the future.” Phil’s face lit up again and he nodded rapidly, he could agree with that, maybe once you built a better relationship with Wilbur and his other boys that’s when the both of you could try again.
Oh god, the other boys. When he invited them all here next week, he hoped they’d make a good impression if not Dadza was going to craft a belt.
“How long has it been since you’ve had an actual meal?”
“God decades!”
He chuckled deeply, kissing your cheek, and led you into his house to have a nice warm meal. Having you around definitely took some getting used to, his days suddenly shifted around as he accommodated for another person but he didn’t mind. Phil woke up happier than he'd felt in a long time, you were curled up against his chest, the top of your head was right under his chin. He ran a hand through your (h/c) hair, letting it run through his fingers, even though it’s been about a week he still felt like you weren’t really beside him.
Wait a week.
His eyes snapped open and he shot up like a rocket, feathers flying everywhere as you groaned, “Crow? Everything alright?” You asked adorably rubbing your eyes, his stress melted away momentarily as he watched you wake up. A few flowers bloomed in your hair as you came to your senses.
“Everythings fine! Just remembered it’s Sunday and the others don’t usually follow set times.” He pulled you from the bed giving you a quick good morning peck on the lips. “Get dressed, something nice I wanna show you off,” He kissed you again longer this time you giggled.
“To who? Our son and your friends?” He gave a happy little nod, as you rolled your eyes, he felt your fingers fix the hair on his face, Phil closed his eyes and leaned against your touch. “But I’ll do as you wish my Crow,” You stood up from the bed and stretched your arms above your head. Phil had managed to get some clothes for you from a nearby village, he still remembered your style, but tried to make it more modern so you didn’t stick out like a sore thumb. You slid on the new clothes, they hung off you loosely. They clearly needed some tailoring, and you slid on the boots he got you the day before, as much as you like walking around barefoot it was pretty impractical.
“Shall we?” Phil held his arm out to you, you wrapped your arm around his own as he led you outside. You both stood on a hillside covered in soft green grass and a big willow tree. Phil looked down at you, his big wings gently covering your back from any danger, he was sure not feeling the grass between your feet was a foreign feeling to you but you didn’t seem to mind. The smile on your face said it all, you were peaceful and relaxed, letting the breeze flow through your hair. “You’re beautiful,” your eyes snapped up to him your cheeks turning light pink,
“Oh stop it old man.” He made an indignant sound as you laughed, your hands reached up and dragged him down to your level, kissing him tenderly. Phil felt his eyes flutter closed and his wings drop, he was snapped back to reality by loud whistling. You pulled back and he pushed you behind him, wings puffing up defensively, standing on the side of the hill were Wilbur, Tommy, Technoblade, and Fundy. Tommy was the one whistling eyes sparkling mischievously, Wilbur whacked him on the back of the head to get him to shut up.
“Dad! Wil’s being mean to me!”
“Don’t be mean to Tommy Wil,” Phil pressed his fingers to his nose with a sigh “Wilbur don’t antagonize your brother.” Fundy was cackling at their mischief, your eyebrows shot up on your forehead and Phil cleared his throat, face pink. Technoblade just stared seemingly eyeing you suspiciously, “(Y/n) these are my other sons. Boys this is (Y/n) Wilbur’s birth mother.” It was Technoblade’s turn for his eyebrows to raise and Tommy’s jaw dropped to the floor,
“No shit.” Tommy gawked, “You don’t look like her at all Wilbur! You’re so ugly, must’ve gotten that from Phil. Sad.” You burst into hysterical laughter watching Phil glare over at Tommy. Wilbur was seething at his sibling but ignored him in favor of giving you a light hug,
“Good to see you, mom.” He whispered,
“Good to see you too.” Phil heard you respond and hug him back, Wilbur whispered something to you and you made a little surprised face before nodding. Phil assumed he told you that the other boys were not in fact his biological children, but those he had adopted. Fundy soon joined in the hug snuggling into your stomach, you ruffled the young fox’s head and he chirped happily. Tommy walked over to introduce himself to you next, he proclaimed to be not only Phil’s favorite son but Wilbur’s favorite brother too. Which lead him to then boldly declare he’d be your favorite as well and Wilbur sent him a scathing look, ah yes, Phil knew that look rather well. Wilbur inherited that look from you, nose all scrunched up and eyes sharp. You shook the young boy's hand and happily told him you couldn't wait to see him fall into the number one spot. Wilbur shot you an offended look and Phil covered up a laugh with his hand, the offending look was sent to his father next,
“Dad.”
“What?” Phil laughed holding up his hands, “If he wants to win your mother’s attention I’m not gonna stop him. Every man for themselves.”
“Phil,” You nudged him with his elbow “be nice.” Tommy began to boast about how awesome he was in comparison to his brother, you sent a wink to Wilbur’s, and his shoulders visibly relaxed.
You were his number one, anyone with a brain could see that.
Phil noticed Technoblade had his eye on you the entire time, it took him much longer than the others to gain trust. He decided to walk away from you to stand by the hybrid's side, “Hey mate.” Technoblade only grunted in response, arms crossed over his broad chest protectively, “What’s crawled up your butt eh?”
“You didn’t tell me ‘bout her.” He motioned in your direction with his chin, “you tell me everything. Why not her?” Technoblade was trying to remain stoic but after all these years he could tell he was hurt. Phil sighed softly scratching the stubble on his chin as he watched Fundy run around you trying to fight for your attention.
“It was hard for me to talk about, she didn’t leave on her own free will. Her life was in danger and I didn’t know if I’d ever see her again. It was a shock when she came back last week, a good shock but a shock nonetheless. (Y/n) was my everything, is my everything. I kept it from everyone because I hoped it would keep her alive and safe from those who wished to harm her.” Phil looked over at Techno, for once Phil’s eyes showed his true age, “I’m sorry mate you know I would’ve told you if I could. Doesn’t take much for me to start gushing ‘bout her. I mean look at her.” Phil glanced back over at you, Fundy was on your shoulders, his hat on your head, meanwhile, Wilbur was wrestling with Tommy on the ground. You looked over at him desperate for his help and Phil only smiled over at you and shook his head. Your eyes screamed distressed as you tried to get the boys to stop fighting, Phil felt Techno’s eyes on him and he looked back at his son and friend.
“I understand I suppose,” Technoblade sighed rubbing the back of his neck, “You wanted to protect her. I can’t be mad at you for that, but no more secrets alright? Promise me?”
“Promise. Now go say hi to her before she gets upset and thinks you don’t like her,” Phil nudged him forward and his eyes widened a little,
“Heh? Phil hold on-”
“(Y/n)! This is Techno.” Phil clapped the man on the back, you looked up at him with a kind smile.
“Pleasure to meet you Technoblade, I like your cape.” Phil watched the man flush in embarrassment at the compliment,
“Eh...thanks. Like your flowers.” He motioned to the flowers blooming in your hair, you beamed brightly at him, always happy to talk about your flowers.
“Thank you, sweetie!” His ears turned red and he waved you off anxiously, he moved to peel Tommy away from Wilbur, wanting to get out of this conversation. Fundy hopped off your shoulders to tackle his father and you let out a breath you didn’t realize you were holding in, “wow. They’re…”
“A lot?”
“Yes.” You laughed fondly, “but…”
“I wouldn’t trade them for the world.” Phil nodded kissing you on the apple of your cheek,
“Good. You better not. They’re all my sons now. I hope you know that” You leaned against his chest, he laughed and you felt his chest rise and fall.
“I’d expect nothing less from you.”
Letters. That’s how most of you communicated in the years to follow, Wilbur would send letters and you would beam in delight. It melted Phil’s heart, he knew his son was busy with the revolution and the now Presidency but he wished he’d visit his mother. You would write him back almost immediately after receiving a letter, you’d seal the letter with a kiss before sending it off with one of Phil’s crows. Afterward, Phil would take you in his arms and pepper you in tender kisses, you would giggle and snuggle into his arms. He told you he loved you, and you cooed and told you loved him back, then you both would share a kiss. Phil loved those days the most, seeing you truly happy made his heart swell. There were days where Phil taught you how to fight, days where you would garden, and days where he let you groom his feathers. He loved that, grooming was another one of the things he missed the most, you got out all the tangled feathers just perfectly. He would lean back against your hands head falling on your shoulder as he panted, his pupils were blown wide as you hummed fondly.
So, maybe Phil enjoyed it a little more than he remembered.
It was a cold autumn day when the letters stopped coming, you were heartbroken, always anxiously petting and feeding his crows. They could sense your disappointment in waves, it was almost choking Phil himself, his heart ached to see you so sad. He pets your hair gently as you both sat on the hill with the willow tree, he noticed the bags under your eyes were dark, Phil’s frown only deepened.
“My love please smile for me, I’ve missed it so much these past few weeks.”
“Somethings wrong,” Your voice was soft looking up at Phil “He wouldn’t just stop writing to us. He always writes to us.” He hated the way your voice quivered, “what if he changed his mind about me?” Phil shushed you softly with a kiss,
“First of all, there’s no way he changed his mind about you. The way the both of you bonded these past few years, Wilbur wouldn’t throw that all away for no good reason.” He tried to reassure you, “Although, I will admit this is strange. Wilbur isn’t one to not write to me, it’s something he’s always done ever since he was old enough to spell.”
“Crow…” You whispered, “can we visit him? Just to put my mind at ease...please.” Phil’s heart melted as soon as he saw your puppy dog eyes, he nodded and you smiled.
Good. He was going to keep that there as long as he was physically able.
The next day, Phil scooped you up in his arms and you headed towards the direction of his son's new nation.
It was called L’Manburg if Phil remembered correctly.
What the both of you didn’t expect to see was a war zone, “Phil…” You murmured eyes wide in fear, he held you to his chest, your brow furrowed in worry. He swore he could see Tommy and Techno looking up at them from below, it didn’t ease the anxiety prickling at his skin, the sky suddenly went black with crows.
A bad omen, something bad was going to happen, and they knew it.
“Phil they’re distressed. Somethings wrong.”
“I know hon,” Phil looked around worriedly, he spotted a glance of Wilbur walking into some sort of room. He landed just outside the entrance, he put you on your feet, “Stay behind me.” He instructed you, you nodded your head clutching onto his bicep. The both of you stepped into the dimly lit room, there were scrawlings etched into the wall, all scratched in by Wilbur. Your brow furrowed in concern, fingers dancing across the lettering, “what’re you doing?” Phil spoke, his tone flat and serious, looking dead at your son, wings spreading out behind him.
“Wilby?” You asked softly as he slowly turned around, his big brown eyes were wet and wide.
“Mom…” He whispered, “I didn’t want…” Wilbur looked away from you and grit his teeth, “Welcome to L’manburg. Sorry, you have to see it like this, war-torn and broken. I wanted you to see it in its prime, a shame you didn’t visit sooner.”
“Wilbur, don’t do this,” Phil said watching his son look longingly at the button in the middle of the wall, almost with longing. “This is your country, it can be fixed. Things can be rebuilt, it’s where you raised your son,” Phil continued his entire body tense and nervous he was too aware of the sword on Wilbur’s hip. Phil reached out his hand as you walked towards Wilbur,
“Baby boy…” You whispered tenderly, vines slowly growing out of the cracks in the floor. “Don’t do this I only just got you back, please think about what you’re doing.” Wilbur’s brow furrowed watching you smile softly holding out your arm, “Everything will be alright I promise you. We can help you.” He let out a wet laugh running a hand through his brown curls, his pointed ears visible.
“It’s not the same nation anymore. There was a special place where people could go but it’s not there. It’s no longer the nation it once was Mom.”
“It is there. You've just- You've just won it back, Wil!” Phil spoke up in opposition to his son.
“MOM, Dad, I’m ALWAYS SO CLOSE to pressing this button, Phil! I've BEEN HERE like seven or eight times, I've been here seven or eight times...Phil, I've been here so many times…” All of you jumped a little at the sound of crackling fireworks outside, “They're fighting. They're fighting!” Phil and you glanced at one another, there was a beat of silence.
“And you want to just blow it all up, You fought so hard to get this land back... So hard.” You argued reaching out to cup his cheeks, he melted into your palms, snuggling into them like they were his last lifeline.
“I don't even know if it works anymore, Mom, I don't even know if the button works, I could, I could... press it.”
“Do you really wanna take that risk?” Phil laughed, “There is a lot of TNT potentially connected to that button.”
“Phil... There was a saying, Phil. By a traitor. Once part of L'Manburg. A traitor- I don't know if you've heard of Eret? He had a saying...It was never meant to be!” He tossed his hand back and slammed it against the button, you let out a devastating shriek pulling Wilbur into your arms to try and protect him from the blast. Phil felt pure adrenaline enter his bloodstream as he flew towards you and his son. His wings wrapped around the both of you and you whimpered, some of his feathers caught fire and he squeezed his loved one’s harder. Wilbur meanwhile let out a roaring cry “MY L'MANBURG, PHIL! MY UNFINISHED SYMPHONY, FOREVER UNFINISHED! IF I CAN'T HAVE THIS, NO-ONE CAN, PHIL!”
“Oh, my god…” Phil spoke, his voice quivering with horror, Wilbur looked down at you, hurt and pride swam in his eyes,
“Are you proud of me mama?” He whispered softly as your thumb caressed his cheeks, Phil glanced down at you ignoring the pain in his wing, your eyes were wet but you were still smiling.
It didn’t reach your eyes.
“I’ll always be proud of you Wilbur. I’m your mother, and I love you, I’ll always love you.” He let out a little cry, you were so genuine with him, your love was smothering him. Wilbur looked up at his father and grabbed his wrist,
“Kill me, Phil. Phil, kill me, Phil kill me!” Wilbur broke away from his hold and tossed his sword Phil’s way. Phil caught it in his arms the lines in his forehead creasing with worry, “Phil, stab me with the sword, murder me now, kill me! Killza, Killza, do it! Kill me, Phil! Murder me! Look, they all want you to! Do it, Phil! Kill me! Phil, kill me!”
“I- You're my SON!”
“Wilbur NO! PHIL DON’T YOU FUCKING DARE!” You cried as Wilbur shoved you away from him, your growing distress caused vines to spill into the room, filling it with greenery, nature wanted to protect you.
“No matter what you- dude, no matter what you've done, I can't-” Phil’s voice cracked, his knuckles turning white against the hilt of the blade.
Wilbur slammed his fist against the wall, “Phil, it's- LOOK! LOOK! HOW MUCH WORK WENT INTO THIS, and it's GONE!” He grabbed Phil’s hand and shoved the point of the sword into his chest, “Do it. Do it.”
“PHIL!” You sobbed grabbing onto his other arm, eyes red and puffy, fat tears were running down your pink cheeks.
The man squeezed his eyes tightly, his throat closing up, he couldn’t look at you, he could feel the look of horror that was slowly spreading across your face.
“Phil. I’m begging you we can get him help, I can’t lose him. Not again, not when I’ve only just got him back.” You choked out, “he’s my baby. He’s our baby.” You were clinging to Phil desperately, your smile was gone, he failed you and he failed his own son.
“Do it, Dad.” Wilbur interrupted you, you let out a desperate cry and Wilbur shushed you softly, brushing away your tears. “It’s better this way,” Wilbur leaned down and kissed your forehead, “I love you and I forgive you.” He looked back at Phil and his disintegrating right-wing, guilt ate at him, “It’s time.”
Phil let out a deep breath, jaw tense and he felt you bury your head in his uninjured wing. He ran his sword through his son’s chest, Wilbur fell forward against the blade, he choked on the blood in his mouth, it flowed out of the corners and stained the front of his shirt. Phil felt you move to look but he covered your face with his wing once more, “Don’t look darlin’” He whispered as your sobs only increased, Wilbur slowly died in his arms with a smile on his face that would forever haunt Phil’s nightmares. He stroked Wilbur’s hair as he slowly faded out of existence, three lives completely snuffed out, Phil was part of giving him life and was the one to take his final one. Once Wilbur was gone you crumpled to the floor loud sobs echoing in the chamber, he fell beside you and wrapped you in his arms, you clutched his beanie to your chest.
“It’s alright. It’ll be okay.”
“Okay! Philza Minecraft how the FUCK is this gonna be okay!” You snarled in his arms but he only held you tighter, “Our son...our baby is dead.” You choked holding your hand to your mouth, the vines that had grown started dying feeding off your agony. “He’s gone…” You whimpered letting Phil caress your hair and plant kisses on the top of your head.
“We’ll get through this. I promise you.” He swore up to you cupping your cheeks within his hands, you sniffled a little and gave a small nod of your head. You were drained emotionally and physically, Phil’s heart ached in his chest.
“You’re hurt…”
“I’ll be alright,” He tried to stretch out his wings he flinched as pain shot up the right side of his body. Phil’s wing was charred to bits, you both knew the unspoken truth that he’d never fly like he once did, Wilbur wasn’t the only thing Phil would mourn.
“We need to set up a grave for him. Under the willow tree, I’ll plant yellow flowers. That way he can always be close to us so long as we live there,” You looked up at him eyebrows pinched so tight “Please.”
“You don’t need permission Darlin’.” He whispered to you resting his forehead against your own, “If that’s where you want it that’s where it’ll be.”
“Good.”
Phil slowly helped you to your feet, you weren’t injured, a few cuts and scrapes he took the majority of the damage from the explosion just like he had planned. He hissed as he tried to put pressure on his left ankle, “Fuck me. I’m too young to need a cane.”
“Eh,” You smiled weakly “Wouldn’t say that.”
“Shut the fuck up.” You giggled softly, your laughter significantly improved his mood, even if it was a minuscule adjustment. “We all can’t be as spry as you,”
“What can I say some of us have it and some of us don’t.” You smirked slightly hearing another loud explosion go off in the distance, “the Withers. Technoblade spawned them didn’t he?” Your eyebrows furrowed in thought and Phil gave a little nod,
“Most likely.”
“Our boys, they can’t do anything without explosions can they?” You shakily whispered and Phil couldn’t help but let out a dry laugh,
“Guess so,” He shrugged limply as you slipped Wilbur’s beanie on your head,
“What now?” You looked up at him through wet eyelashes, Phil caressed the back of your head,
“We go home, bury what’s left of Wilbur, and take a look at my wings to assess the damage.” Phil watched you nod numbly against him, “it’ll be a long walk back.” He groaned rubbing his eyes and you rubbed his back soothingly.
“Let me handle that,” You reassured and he raised an eyebrow the both of you moved to leave the structure neither one of you wanted to put up with anyone, you both had lost a son and wanted time to mourn. Plus, it seemed Tommy and Technoblade were busy fighting. Phil watched you with careful eyes allowing himself to lean against one of the trees that survived the explosion. You placed your fingers in your mouth and gently whistled, not only did a crow from a tree flutter by but a wandering horse as well, you really were an animal whisperer. The crow ruffled its feathers and cawed loudly at Phil, he shot the crow a look and flipped it off, meanwhile, you worked your magic taming the horse in a matter of moments. “Come here Crow,” You held as your hand and he fell into it, you helped him onto the horse and he shot you a look,
“I’m not riding on this horse with you walking on foot. Switch with me.” Phil tried to argue but you shushed him,
“You took an explosion to the back. Take a breather, relax, nature helps me heal anyway.” You hummed fondly as he slumped against the horse reluctantly, it took about an hour to get back home, Phil had lost all feeling in his wing and wanted nothing more than to curl up with you and go to sleep. As the looming willow tree came into view Phil heard you sniffle and clutch his son’s beanie on your head,
“(Y/n)?”
“I-I’m alright.” You cleared your throat shaking your head, “Let’s get you looked at before anything else, okay?” Phil too exhausted to argue only nodded limply, you helped him inside and set him down on a chair. “Spread your wings for me,” You commanded, helping him stretch out his wings. He cursed, only feeling pure agony shoot through his right side,
“Ow! Fuck me!”
“Sorry, sorry,” You whispered out tenderly rubbing the base of his left-wing. The mixture of pain and pleasure was foreign but not completely unwelcome. “Oh, Phil…” You trailed off hesitant to touch the damage that was inflicted, “I don’t...I don’t think-” You chewed the bottom of your lip, but Phil got the message, he wasn’t going to be able to fly as he once did, maybe ever again. His flight feathers were singed to hell, completely burned away, not to mention the patchiness of his other feathers. His shoulders slumped forward as he ran a hand down his face, he was exhausted, he felt the coolness on his wing as you spread some antibiotic on the injury. “I’m sorry,” You kissed the back of his neck and he shivered at the feeling. “We’ll bury what we have tomorrow, you need rest.”
“I’ll be fine-”
“Phil, I will force you into bed. Don’t fucking test me right now, I will force you if I have to.” You hissed out glaring daggers at him, he should be threatened but he just felt oddly aroused.
He decided to attribute that to how fucked up he felt today.
Phil allowed you to tuck him into bed as gentle as you were capable of doing, “I’m going to send out some letters. I’ll join you in a little bit.” He felt you remove his hat and run your fingers through his blonde hair, he leaned into your touch like a kitten. As soon as you shut the door, Phil was out like a light.
Phil found out the next day that you had sent a letter out to both Tommy and Technoblade, you wouldn’t specify what you sent but you seemed a bit more relaxed than you had the other day. You both didn’t get a chance to bury what was left of Wilbur until a week later, Phil’s healing process was slower than he could’ve imagined. Phil reluctantly had to use a cane to get around easily, his crows laughed at him but you were also so kind and careful.
You were an angel.
The two of you buried him under the willow tree on the hill where you’d met the other members of your odd family for the first time. Technoblade had shown up at your doorstep holding out a large box inside of it was a stone tombstone inscribed on the tombstone was Wilbur’s name and date of birth and death. It had surprised Phil that the hybrid even agreed to make this for you, but at the same time, he was Phil’s adoptive son and closest friend, he appreciated the gesture nonetheless. Phil had placed Wilbur’s coat and beanie into a box and placed it under the ground. You had kept your promise and had grown little yellow flowers around the site of the burial, and the two parents mourned the loss of their biological son. Technoblade stood close by a hand resting on Phil’s shoulder in hopes to soothe him at least a little bit, Phil would never admit it but he appreciated the gesture.
Little did the three of them know, a small smile spread across a young ghost’s face. He picked at the sleeves of his yellow sweater, maybe he could give both of them some blue sometime to help them heal.
He had a feeling they’d like that idea.

[SilverV fic] Digital Revolution
https://archiveofourown.org/works/37434472/chapters/93420802
Because this game has completely eaten my brain, I wrote ENTIRELY too much. It started as a series of vignettes as I did my first playthrough, then became an entire STORY. Now it’s here for you to read!
Here’s a sample from the first chapter, where V and Johnny are snarking at each other:
V walked down the street, hands shoved deep in her pockets. She turned the corner, and there he was again.
Johnny motherfucking Silverhand.
She supposed that she should have been honored to meet one of Night City's legends. She'd heard the story - god, everyone had heard the story - about the terrorist rockerboy who had nuked Arasaka tower. She raised a glass to his memory with everyone else at The Afterlife on the anniversary of the event every year. It was just something you did, like leaving a shell casing at Blitzkrieg's tomb for luck or pouring one out for Bartmoss if you had a really tough system to crack. It was part of merc culture.
No one had mentioned that he was such an asshole.
Actually, now that V thought about it, people had mentioned that he was an asshole, but it hadn't mattered to her before. Now, it mattered very much. She had her own personal, never-ending private fan meetup with the legend in the flesh.
Her flesh, unfortunately. And she would have paid every eddie ever minted to get out of his company.
"How are you still here?" She said, exasperated. "I'm taking the pills regularly."
"I can't exactly go anywhere else, you dumb bitch." He said. "I'm inside your fucking head."
"So? You can stay inside my fucking head, nice and quiet, and leave me the fuck alone. Why the shit do you gotta keep showing up everywhere I go?"
"Because I can." He said, grinning. "Because it pisses you off "
"Fucking preem." She said. "It's not enough that you're, like, eating my brain, but now you gotta annoy me to death, too."
"Not like I have anything else going on " He said with a shrug. "Not like you have anything else going on, either. Your jobs have dried up after that shitshow at 'Saka Tower. Speaking of, aren't you supposed to be laying low?"
V sighed. "I'm not going to hide away in my apartment until I die. And I'm working on the job sitch. Gonna go meet with a new fixer, see if I can't scare something up. So I'm gonna need you to stay quiet and out of sight so I don't look like I'm talking to myself."
Already, she was aware of people giving her a wide berth on the sidewalk. Muttering to yourself kinda did that.
"You don't have to say shit out loud, you know." He said, falling into step beside her. "I can literally hear your thoughts."
"Don't." She said, whirling on him. "Don't remind me. And if you can, I dunno, block me out or some shit. Stick your fingers in your ears and hum, whatever it takes for you to not hear my thoughts. That shit is fucking creepy."
"Calm your tits. I can't hear everything. It's not like I'm in here sorting through all your dirty fantasies like a rack of BDs."
She shuddered at the thought. "So what do you hear?"
He frowned for a moment, thinking. "Anything really loud, like if you're really worked up about something. And anything you send my way. I could hear you cussing me out in the shower this morning."
"Look. I didn't trust you to stay the fuck out while I was naked."
"And I told you, I can't stay the fuck out. I am literally inside your head. Best I could do was like, close my ghost-eyes and try not to be aware of what you were doing. That gonna be good enough for you, yer highness?"
"Fucks sakes, I don't need this shit right now..." V said, raising her eyes skyward and sending a prayer up to whoever looked out for fuckups and down-on-their-luck mercs. "Listen. You gotta get out of here when I go in there, okay? I don't want to see your face until I'm done meeting with her. You need me to get this job just as much as I do. So fuck off."
He met her gaze, a twisted grin on his face. "Fine. But I'm gonna be in here, trying to find your filthiest memory the whole time."
His image winked out. V clenched her fists and wished he'd come back so she could throttle him.
"Silverhand! Don't you fucking dare! You just said you can't do that shit, right? You're just fucking with me. Please say you're fucking with me."
Across the street, a group of street kids stared at her like an animal in a zoo. She remembered being that age, and watching the mentally unstable rant and rave had been better than watching vids through an open window.
V ran a hand over her face and tried to compose herself before she stepped inside. She was a goddamn professional, damnit. Time to start acting like one.

Historically accurate Hamilton
Hamilton faces a lot of criticism because of its historical inaccuracies, but people seem to forget that it isn’t supposed to be completely accurate. It’s historical fiction, and many details were tweaked to make the musical run more smoothly, make more sense, and generally be easier for an audience to follow. To emphasise my point, I rewrote some of Hamilton to show what it might have been like if it was completely historically accurate (or, parts of it. I’m not rewriting an entire musical).
NB: I am by no means a historical expert. The following is meant for comedy purposes only
For songs where multiple people sing, the speaker will be denoted by the following letters: B – Burr, H – Hamilton, L – Lafayette, J – John Laurens, M – Hercules Mulligan, T – Thomas Jefferson,
Use of the squiggles (~~~~~) means some of the song was skipped
I think that’s everything! Enjoy the musical!!!!!

Aaron Burr – Historically accurate
~~~~~
B: You punched the bursar?
A: Nope
~~~~~
Showtime! Showtime! Yo!
J: I’m John Lauren’s, in the place to be! It’d make sense for you to meet all three Of us together, but unfortunately It’s gonna be a while ‘til you finally meet me!
L: Oui oui, mon ami, je m'appelle Lafayette! And just like Laurens, I have not arrived yet I sing from afar and I say “bonsoir” To these strangers at the bar, they do not know moi
M: Brrrah brraaah! I am Hercules Mulligan Talking to myself, cos I don’t have a single friend Wait, I’m already friends with Alex Ham, And this introduction’s pointless, cos he knows who I am! No more people, we need a solution The two of us alone can’t start a revolution!
Well, if it ain't the prodigy of Princeton college! Aaron Burr! Give us a verse, drop some knowledge!
B: Good luck with that, you’re all on your own, Even Hamilton can’t start a revolution alone
M: Burr, the revolution's imminent. What do you stall for?
H: If you stand for nothing Burr, what’ll you fall for?
M: Who? Who are you?
H: ….. Hamilton? Your friend?
M: Oh. Right. Yea.
*awkward pause, then lights go down*
The Story of Tonight – Historically accurate
M: Raise a glass to the two of us
H: Why are there so few of us?
M: Not much is happening tonight
H: I need another drink tonight
M: They will forget about tonight

Cabinet battle #1 – Historically Accurate
W: Secretary Jefferson, you have the floor
T: Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness We fought for these ideals we shouldn’t settle for less But I’m quiet and reserved, and not a fan of fighting So I’m just gonna give you my objections in writing
W: Thank you, Secretary Jefferson Secretary Hamilton, your response
H: Thomas, that was a real nice declaration You speaking up at all is a cause for celebration But obviously, there isn’t that much to discuss Seeing as you didn’t kick up much of a fuss My new financial system is a masterpiece Our debts will be sorted, our independence will increase Tell me if you have any suggestions or notes But I have high hopes that I can rely on your votes
W: Great. Meeting concluded.
Cabinet Battle #2 – Historically Accurate
W: The issue on the table, France is on the verge of war with England And do we provide aid and troops to our French allies Or do we stay out of it, remember My decision on this matter is not subject to congressional approval The only person you have to convince is me Secretary Jefferson, you have the floor, sir

well raised and highkey!canon
timeline: post-Prague, pre-Naples by a few months
.
The call comes just past midnight.
Most of the time—correction, all of the time—he would ignore such a call. If someone is stupid enough to try and reach him at this hour, that's their business and mistake to make. Why should he care for stupidity of others?
Especially when he has urgent reports to read and prepare for a meeting tomorrow. He is to attend this meeting on his father's behalf due to his...slipping health.
There is a change in the air, Santino can detect it and taste it. He knows Gianna is the same. She's pulling her own strings and making her own preparations.
Camorra is on a brink of a revolution once again and he and his sister are at the helm of it.
However, only one name could ever distract him from his family—only one and he lowers his wine glass for upon spotting it.
(Name)
Dropping his pen on the documents carelessly, Santino picks up the phone at the second ring.
"Cara mia," he greets with a slight twitch of his lips and leans back in his leather seat. "So lovely to hear from you."
He tries to imagine you—wherever the Russian might have sent you away—and wonders what horizon you are observing. Outside, the bay of Naples glows in the pale moonlight through the partially opened balcony doors.
Silence greets him.
"Bella?"
A rattling, shallow breath echoes in his ear and his slight smile crumbles as he sits up, pressing the phone closer.
"Where are you?" he demands softly. "Are you injured?"
"I'm...fine."
You don't sound fine.
You're not fine.
But you were. You've been doing well. No relapses, slow but steady progress since Chicago. Fewer nightmares, more genuine smiles. He barely checks in with Winston anymore, and the last time he did has been as awkward and as stilted as all the times before it but necessary.
She's doing well. There was the Casablanca incident but it was harmless. She's stronger now. I think she's finally starting to let it go.
You are.
Casablanca has been a small setback—more worry that it was worth because you were fine. When he tracked you down, you had clung to him, arms around his shoulder and soft pants against his neck.
He had chewed out the manager who sat through it all with gritted teeth and pinched expression—apparently your newest friend, and he couldn't help but wonder how you always win loyalty so damn easily in a world where none is given.
Still, he's Camorra heir and she was a newly appointed manager who did not need an enemy. A smart woman if not a highly unpleasant one.
You had needed him though.
Didn't allow anyone else to touch you or help you, and through the uncomfortable roll of something he didn't dare to acknowledge as worry in his chest, shone something close to...happiness.
He's been hated, cursed, scorned.
Never needed—not genuinely. Not without deals or favours or expectations. Not with a sleepy smile and crinkling of eyes as he helped you to bed.
A vast difference to what he witnessed in Chicago.
An emptiness still but softer this time. More bearable.
Now though—
"Water?" he guesses, tense. "Is it getting bad again, cara?"
"Yes."
Santino is not quite sure which question you're responding to but it doesn't matter.
"Where are you?" he urges, trying to keep his tone calm. Patience, as you always remind him with a judicious grin, is not his strong point. "Tell me where you and I'll send Ares with the jet, amore. She can pick you up and you can stay with me for a few days, hm? Or New York, whichever you prefer."
Somewhere safe. Somewhere where this won't be used against you.
He feels like punching something. He should call the old man now, warn him. Winston has...something with you that Santino doesn't quite understand. It's an odd bond but you trust the man and Winston has proven that he...cares.
"No. Can you..." you breathe and he steps from behind the desk, marching towards the balcony. He needs fresh air—your voice— "Could you...just...stay on the phone with me, Santi?"
Santi.
He hates the fact that even now you calling him that makes lightness bloom in his chest.
Fuck, fuck.
He has a mountain of work to get through but your voice—
Tiny and scratchy with pain. He doesn't hear tears and feels selfishly grateful for it because he can't imagine not tearing the world apart to find you if he did. See with his own eyes that you will be fine. It's only been three weeks since he's last seen you but it feels like an eternity now.
"Of course, amore," he reassures and steps into the warm Italian night air, running his hand through his hair. He swallows, listening to your unsteady, slow breaths through the line. "Are you counting?"
A pause. "Yes."
"Ah, that's my girl," it slips out before he can control it, and he rushes ahead before you can comment, "Keep doing that, bella. Would you like me to talk?"
Another breath, steadier this time. "Please."
He's imagined plenty of scenarios in which you may use that word with him but none of them involving this damned pain.
He fucking hates it.
"My birthday is in a few months," he says conversationally, forcing the loftiness into his words, but his fingers keep flexing against the railing. He stares out towards the sea and wonders where in this wide, wicked world you are. How long it may take to reach you. After Tokyo, every time something goes wrong, he's always intimately aware of the particular disadvantage that is you still being on Tarasov's chain. "I am planning a party. Would you care to come? As my honour guest, of course. Perhaps my plus one as well, yes?"
He wants it.
That dream of you beside him.
One day soon you will be free of Tarasov and after that—
Oh, after that. He has every intention of offering you a place in his family, beside him.
His father's reign is coming to an end and one day he will sit at the very top.
The Camorra crown will sit on his head and he will spill all the blood needed to get it.
And when he's Head you will be free.
Even if it means shredding Viggo Tarasov and his family to pieces. Slowly. For all he's done.
Blood for blood.
"I would like that."
He leans over the railing, his fingers rubbing against his temple.
"Good, amore. How are you? Do you need anything?"
Because he never knows what to expect or what he can do to help with this.
It's uncomfortable and pitiful to admit his lack of know-how when it comes to these matters. He doesn't understand your demons, not really. He tries but fails most of the time.
Caring is exhausting. But it's you.
A muffled rustling, and then he hears your voice clearer like you're speaking right into the receiver, "Would you stay with me?" you half-ask and half-plead and it's like a kick to the chest. One of your blade between his ribs. Sinking deeper, deeper, deeper— "On the phone till I fall asleep. Please, Santi."
Fuck.
You are so very, very dangerous.
Special. Dear.
"You don't need to ask, (Name)."
He's only returning the favour, he reasons, for back when you stayed with him on the phone as he rang you drunk and in need of company. He's never had someone before he could trust with grief.
He's only returning the favour, he forces himself to repeat.
Over and over.
Like that might change the fact that you could ask him anything with that subdued need in your voice and he would give you everything.

@retrograderesemblance (townsend)
melody fills the air, birds chirping softly as gentle winds rustle the canopies of trees and soldiers move about the estate. she does well to remain out of the way, reading or working on mending the tear in her blue dress. there were others who could do such a thing for her, yet she refused to allow anyone else's hands upon the garment for it had been the last dress her parents had gifted her and she had not grown so much since. today, however, she ventures into the sun thinking upon why her uncle had decided to subject her to such travel. he hadn't asked her aunt to accompany him-- though she rather believed such had to do with her care of little meggie. not that she did not see the opportunity such an excursion could present if only she held the means of communication for such a thing. she knew the names of a few supposed traitors (in her uncle's eyes) her uncle showed distaste for whenever she mentioned her hometown and he went into a tirade about those who had left and joined washington's cause and the families which had muddled the minds of her parents. that did not mean she held any reasonable means to know of their whereabouts or if they even continued to remain in their granted positions. she was only privy to what she had overheard and was vastly kept far away from the reaches of anyone who might show any sympathies toward patriots.
it was a dangerous game she sought to embark upon which called her own character into question, for should she remain loyal to an uncle who held such reverence for the side which had taken her parents or should her loyalty lay with those in the grave? it mattered not to the moment. her attention drawn within many places at once. a man walked up the path to her left, one she recalls her uncle informing her earlier that day was the son of the estate's owner and captain smallwood diverts his course upon spotting her to the far right. her features tighten in frustration, a hope in the back of her mind that her uncle was not seeing fit to place them into the same space as some recuperance for matthew's death. how vile and how positivity frustrating he failed to understand how brutish smallwood was. she makes her choice quickly, thinking upon the thought that if only a canon ball could find it's way toward tyler she might have a day's peace. it wouldn't even have to land upon him. she'd be content if it had merely rolled over him.
Tumblr media
such thoughts are pushed away as her stride meets the man not far from her, townsend, she believed. a soft and bright smile offered. "mr townsend, how great it is to see you again!" the comment emits with enough projection she believes smallwood might hear, before she quiets her tone and peers at the confused man before her. "my uncle, general maxwell, spoke of you earlier, pointed you out." a pause as she moves to stand next to him as if they are friends and entirely too expectantly of him to fall in line with such plans. "perhaps it is not proper for me to say but the captain over there is a brute of a man. please do me the honor of pretending we are already acquainted so that i might avoid him just a little longer."

SHIP EDITS ↣ KATARZYNA & BENJAMIN
We're standing face-to-face with our own human race. We commit the sins again and our sons and daughters pay. Our tainted history is playing on repeat. But we could change it if we stand up strong and take the lead. When I was younger, I was named a generation unafraid. For heirs to come, be brave. And meet me on the battlefield. Even on the darkest night, I will be your sword and shield, your camouflage. And you will be mine. Echos of the shots ring out, we may be the first to fall. Everything can stay the same or we could change it all.

@honorhearted from katarzyna for the ribbon meme (submit/ask box wouldn't let me format so figured i'd just make a post ^_^)
Tumblr media
the witch can hear the soft scraping of a quill across parchment, birds in the distance, the trotting of footfalls outside the tent though she gives them little serious notice as she enters unseen, her shadows doing their work. a soft smile falls upon her lips as she sees benjamin busying himself with his paperwork. she's in her uniform, which had a tendency of holding up by style and the darkness of it hiding blood or dirt, and though there's no injuries in sight there is a small smear of dirt on her cheek that she'd failed to notice. it's not entirely unusual though she usually catches it before she's wandering about. she has a tendency of sparring with her officers be it with a sword, magic, or something in between. training was vital and had to be honed and nurtured.
regardless, she'd gathered the item that had been in her pocket moving toward him and purposefully drawing his attention toward her. "i know perhaps it strange.." she begins, letting the ribbon glide over her hands before reaching out and putting it around his neck loosely. she ties it gently as she chuckles, this not being it's intended purpose but amusing to her all the same. then she drops her hands away. "i do not intend for you to actually wear it outwardly or understand the in and outs of it. but this is a special ribbon." she reveals, letting her hands find his arms in familiarity.
Tumblr media
"i'm going to implore you to carry it with you in some fashion, in your pocket or some such place." in a way it reminded her of times of old, the times she had been originally bore to, when knights would carry the favor of maidens. "a ribbon, i figured would be less conspicuous than other things i could have used. if you must you can play on medieval tales and say someone asked of you to possess it." there's a pause for a moment, her gaze meeting his.
"i infused spellwork into this ribbon. think of it as a good luck talisman when you go to battle or here, anywhere really." there's small characters written in ink on it too though not readily visible and only on one side, chinese casting she'd learned from longwei many years before. "it's not a true failsafe but it should help guide your path. and.. should something happen, hold it and think of me. it'll find it's way to me and i to you." funny how something as trivial as a ribbon could have such an important task. however it was not the item which was of importance but the magic which had been molded into it.

World's Yin-Yang
Diamonds are stones Money is paper Yet they're the bones Of the world maker. We're organic Like love, sometimes, But hey, don't panic! It's not the end of the times. Kafkaesque figures, constantly reborn And constantly dying, A complexion, a form Lying and crying. A trauma, a disease Doing its job with ease A vicious cicle, a slave Of feelings, impulse, Living in Plato's cave, Checking the pulse Trough alcool and coffee To pay a fee For being here without (our) permission It's always given by others, So here's a petition For idiots and mumblers. Here's their story, That they don't think about; Filled with tremendous fury, Paper, stones and political clout: We started off as corrupted cells, By a virus known to all; William Shakespeare now tells he was the second in UK to rise and stand tall. Protests all over the place, Peru and Thailand demanded a new constitution, George Floyd, a matter of race, Pablo Hasél, a matter of revolution. Dictatorships arising, Never-changing systems, it ain't surprising: They need an enemy for excusing its faults, Such as Belarusian frauds. Biden priming a renewed offensive, In Venezuela and Iraq - Long live The Dogs of war! Watching the disproportional use of force from afar, While they drink their glasses of milk, With their hands, resilient as silk, Blaming their mothers for being born, Enforcing a near-total abortion ban: another thorn Of the Poland rose is a rose is a rose - We shall repeat what they chose... Nassima all-Sada and we all lose, Loose ends, in an endless swirl of madness Translating into an hungarian anti-gay MEP attending an orgy, Into a malicious portuguese version of Ace Ventura, claiming his oligarchy; These things, louder than words, louder than their own voice. Between good and evil, there's a choice, And it is eating itself, worse than an animal: A bloody carnival Of masks, illegal stones and paper, and fancy rags, Raising their ultimate stained red and orange flags, China's baseless mass incarceration, Where's the innovation? India's largest general strike, playing exit music for a film; Brexit... Portugal's conscientious objection against sex education and citizenship, The ship is sinking, it is sinking, the ship! "I'm not a robot!" - Amazon workers proclaim In their orange vest While Bezos plays Saramago's Caim. The lambs poverty is the wolf conquest. Well, that was the evil, now here's the good: The Thermopolium of Regio V emerged as it should; Argentina and South Korea legalized abortion; Spain and Portugal approved euthanasia, what a fortune! Chile rewrites Pinochet-era constitution, And beyond good and evil, NASA landed on Mars. Eventually, on a near future, we'll get rid of SARS! New Zealand has already found the solution. Quoting Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass: "Agonies are one of my changes of garments, I do not ask the wounded person how he feels, I myself become the wounded person."
And quoting Bertrand Russell "History should be taught as the history of the rise of civilization, and not as the history of this nation or that. It should be taught from the point of view of mankind as a whole and not with undue emphasis upon one's own country." - Iva Leão

Rain Against A Window
Pairing: Eventual Fitz Vacker/Dex Dizznee, Eventual Biana Vacker/Sophie Foster
Wordcount: 1,746
Summary: Dex continues, “have you heard the rumors? About the prince and princess?”
“You mean the princess whose name is so similar to mine I visibly react whenever anyone mentions her? Yeah, I’ve heard of her.”
“They’re saying-” and here Dex’s voice drops to a whisper- “that Fitzroy and Bianca are alive.”
Other notes: Here’s the first chapter of the Anastasia AU! I’m a little nervous about starting a multichap, so please bear with me!
Read it on ao3 or under the cut!
St Petersburg, Russia. October 12, 1917.
Della rushes through the palace hallways, holding tight to the hands of her two smallest children. Fitzroy stumbles, and she pulls him to his feet.
“Come on, sweetheart,” she says. “We need to keep going.”
She doesn’t know where Alden and Alvar are. As soon as the shouts of “assassin” had been heard, she had taken Fitzroy and Bianca and run. She hopes that her husband and her eldest son are all right.
They turn into a hallway, and Della can see the doorway that will lead them outside at the end. She breathes a sigh of relief- they’re almost there. They’re going to make it.
Gently, she pushes Bianca and Fitzroy forward towards the door, spinning around when she hears footsteps behind them. Della’s sags when she sees Alvar standing there.
“Al, thank goodness,” she says. “Come on, we need to leave.”
“You’re right,” Alvar says coldly. “You do.”
Della blinks. “Alvar?”
Slowly, her son reaches behind himself and points a gun at her. Della freezes. “Alvar,” she pleads, “Don’t do this. You’re better than this.”
Alvar snorts. “Funny. I wasn’t aware you thought of me as ‘better’ than anything.”
“Alvar-” Della starts, shooing her other children towards the exit behind her back. Alvar growls.
“Even now, they’re more important than me.”
“They’re not,” Della says. “But it’s me you’re frustrated with. Don’t take it out on them.”
“I’m not frustrated,” Alvar responds coolly, gun never shifting in his hand. “I’m simply tired of this facade.” He steps closer.
“You’ll see. Or, you won’t, really. But as you go blind, know that this is what’s best for Russia.”
He pulls the trigger.

St Petersburg, Russia. February 23, 1927.
“Comrades!”
A crowd surrounds a wooden platform, the man atop it spreading his arms wide.  “The revolution hears you. Each and every one of you. Together, we will forge a new Russia that will be the envy of all the world!” The crowd erupts into tears, and he gives the people below a wide smile.
This is Alvar, the ex-Vacker prince who took out his mother and siblings in a single night. Everyone in Russia- or, at least, in the general area around Petersburg- knows him. Some love him, some hate him, but all are agreed on one thing: you don’t mess with Alvar. Those who do tend to disappear.
A brown-haired girl lurks on the edge of the onlookers, frown deepening with each word Alvar says. When he begins to wrap up his speech, she sighs and ducks into an alleyway.
This is Biana Dizznee, fifteen year old scam artist and oddly good singer. She’s technically an orphan, but she’ll refute any claim towards that- this is my family, she’ll say, gesturing towards the Dizznees, not some people who didn’t even care enough to keep me. She disapproves of the current government, not that she’d ever be loud about it; she likes being alive very much, thank you.
Biana moves along the dirty streets to a small market, loud with the sound of voices. She walks over to a boy with strawberry-blond hair, tapping him on the shoulder. He turns around, leaning against the fruit stall they’re standing in front of.
“Hey, Bi. What’s going on?”
Biana shrugs, picking up an apple and inspecting it for spots. She doesn’t know why she even bothers anymore, honestly- any and all fruit that’s being sold down here is sure to be half-rotted already. “Not much. Alvar’s on another of his tangents. Apparently Petersburg is now called ‘Leningrad.’”
Dex snorts. “Good luck with that.”
This is Dex Dizznee, Biana’s adopted brother. People say he can fix everything; and, while almost true, fixing things is nowhere near his most useful talent. No, that would be his ability to forge papers, hotwire machines, pick locks. If Biana’s the face of their little group, the one who talks their way out, Dex is the one who gets things done.
“Right?” Biana agrees, giving up on her apple. “He’s tried stuff like this before, too. It won’t work- Petersburg will always be Petersburg, no matter how many new names they give it. The tsar’s influence is too strong for that.”
“Speaking of the tsar,” Dex says casually. Biana recognizes the twinkle in his heads and jerks her head covertly to the left. They move out of the market, out of earshot of anyone incriminating. Biana raises an eyebrow and Dex continues, “have you heard the rumors? About the prince and princess?”
“You mean the princess whose name is so similar to mine I visibly react whenever anyone mentions her? Yeah, I’ve heard of her.”
“They’re saying-” and here Dex’s voice drops to a whisper- “that Fitzroy and Bianca are alive.”
Biana scoffs. “That’s impossible. Alvar killed them- he boasts about it once a week.”
Dex shrugs. “Maybe so. All I know is that the Ruewens, over in Paris, are offering a huge reward if someone brings them the lost Vackers.”
A slow smile creeps over Biana’s face. “And if someone was to, say, bring them the lost Vackers, or people who seemed like the lost Vackers…”
“That someone would get a reward.” Dex finishes. “A reward so huge we could pay off all of Mom’s medical bills right now.”
“Then let’s do it,” Biana says. “It can’t be too hard, right? I could play Bianca, you could be Fitz-” she trails off, thinking. “No, that won’t work. I look pretty close to a Vacker, teal eyes and all that, but you’re not even the right skin tone.”
“But you know who is?” Dex responds. “That streetsweeper everyone keeps thinking is your brother.”
Biana gasps. “You’re right. That’s brilliant.”
“All we need to do is get him on board.”
-/-
A light mist settles over the city as a teal-eyed boy sweeps a broom across the sidewalks, shivering as the cold sets into his clothes. Passer-bys push him this way and that, barely sparing him a glance.
This is Fitz. He doesn’t know quite who he is, or why he’s in Russia, but he doesn’t need to. Sweep the streets, he’s told, and sweep the streets he does. It’s a simple, mind-numbing job, but Fitz doesn’t care- if his mind is numb, it distracts from the numerous blank spots in his memory.
He’s just finished, leaning his broom against the wall inside a small hat shop, when a truck in the street backfires, emitting a loud bang. Unbidden, Fitz flinches.
Loud noises startle him. The nurses at the hospital believe that it’s a side effect of getting shot in the head, that every shot-like sound will trigger him, but Fitz thinks it’s more than that.
Loud noises these days, after all, never mean anything good.
The truck on the road moves on, a small paper-wrapped package falling out of the back. Curiously, Fitz picks it up and peeks inside.
It’s an ornate box, initialed with a gold-inlaid V that even Fitz, with his limited memory, knows- the sign of the royal family. He moves to tilt the lid open, but footsteps behind him make him hurriedly rewrap the box and turn around.
“Hello,” a girl with eyes the same shade as Fitz’s says. “We’d like to talk.” She loops her arm through his and Fitz’s eyes go wide. He pushes away, trying to back up. A boy with red hair, standing a few feet behind the girl, sighs.
“Bi, that’s probably not the best way to do this. You sound like you’re kidnapping him.”
Bi makes a considering noise and nods. “You’re right. Sorry,” she says to Fitz. “Just to clarify, ‘We want to talk’ wasn’t a way of saying ‘we want to kidnap you’- we actually do just want to talk.”
Fitz narrows his eyes at them, gesturing towards the hat shop in front of them. They huddle under the awning, and Fitz raises an eyebrow.
“Talk,” he says. Bi turns to her friend.
“Uh, okay,” she starts. “First of all, I’m Biana, and this is Dex. And we.. well. You’ve heard of the Vackers, right?”
Five minutes later, Fitz leans against the glass of the shop window, staring at them. “You’re going to impersonate the prince and princess and go to Paris to get money,” he says, “and you want me to help?”
“Pretty much, yeah,” Dex agrees. “We’ll give you a third of the profits, though. What do you say?”
Fitz should say no. He should say no, and walk away, and tell the government. That’s what a loyal citizen would do, and Fitz has worked hard to be a loyal citizen.
But something in the back of his mind says Paris, and something in the back of his mind says you need to get out of here, and something in the back of his mind says aren’t you tired of being a streetsweeper, and Fitz finds he can’t say no.
“I’ll do it.”
-/-
The rumor mill in Russia flows as steadily as the Neva river, always staying its course. It can be diverted, of course, and it is- sometimes to Germany, sometimes to Belarus, sometimes to France.
Now, rumors flow to Paris, where a blond girl walks the streets, greeting people who she knows. She smiles and chuckles and seems, for all the world, like a people person.
She is not.
This is Sophie Ruewen, previously Foster. She’s the adopted daughter of Grady and Edaline Ruewen, ex-count and countess of Russia. Sophie’s never actually been to Russia- her parents left before things got too bad. She’s heard the stories, though, and keeps an ear out for any rumors.
Rumors are flying around Paris today, though, and Sophie carefully commits them to memory.
The Vacker siblings, it seems, are back.
-/-
And back in Russia, Alvar sits in his office, door closed and scowling. People are saying Fitzroy and Bianca are alive, which is impossible. Alvar killed them himself.
Still, every rumor in St Petersburg has a hint of truth.
Carefully, Alvar slides a drawer in his desk open and takes out his gun.
Better safe than sorry, after all.
-/-
This is Alvar, Biana, Dex, Fitz, and Sophie.
They don’t all know each other, not yet. They’re scattered, each with their own hopes and dreams and fears. Some of them are luckier than others. But all have a role to play in the drama of the Vackers.
This is Sophie, Fitz, Dex, Biana, and Alvar.
And with them, on a cold February day, we set our scene.
