Darkness of the Clans-Prolouge

Darkness clung to the forest, like a heavy pelt. Sides rose and fell, as the VampireClan cats slept. A light, dusky ginger shape wound its way through the clearing, it's curled tail flicking.

The huge oaks that bordered the VampireClan camp twisted and waved in the slight breeze. Loud creaks and groans filled the air, as the roots that's formed the cats dens twisted in the wind.

"ViscousDribble? Where are you?" the ginger she-cat mewed, sitting down beside the tangle of roots that formed the medicine cat's den.

"Right here, FangStar." ViscousDribble replied, padding out of the darkness of his den.

His emerald green eyes flashed and winked. His deep red coat shone, dully, in the moonlight, it's lighter red stripes glinting. The bloody drool ran from the corners of his mouth, pooling at his feet.

"How is she?" FangStar asked, flicking her ears back.

DeceasedLeg? No, she's fine! Even before UnderLing got to her, that leg was useless. She won't be joining DemonClan anytime soon!" he explained, waving his tail.

"May I see her?" she queried, stepping towards the den.

"Of course. Just keep your voice down." he told her, strolling away into the darkness of his den. FangStar followed close behind, her paws thudding, lightly, on the soft earth. ViscousDribble turned a corner, leading her into his main den.

Pale moonlight spilled through a hole in the den's roof. The roots that made up the walls filled the air with their musty scent. Several small, grass nests dotted the den, only two of them occupied.

The first was occupied by Cruel heart, her belly swollen with kits. She was very close to kitting.

In the other, lay DeceasedLeg. Her dark ginger fur was matted with blood. Cobwebs were pressed, thickly, around her wounded leg.

"Will she be able to continue her warrior duties?" FangStar queried, touching her nose to DeceasedLeg's flank.

"I...don't believe so. I think...I think it's time for her to retire to the elders den." ViscousDribble murmured, grooming a paw.

"She was one of our best warriors." she sighed, raising her head, her eyes churning with buried emotion.

ViscousDribble didn't answer.

"ViscousDribble? Are you alright?" she meowed, turning to face the medicine cat.

His green eyes were blazing, as if they had been replaced by comets. His deep red fur blew, violently, around him, wild and insistent. The bloody saliva that constantly ran from his mouth had disappeared, completely.

"V-ViscousDribble? What's...What's going on?" FangStar stammered, her gray eyes wide.

"Do not fear, FangStar, Leader of VampireClan. This medicine cat is only delivering a message from BeserkerClan." ViscousDribble explained, in a harsh, uncanny voice.

"What is your message?" she questioned, shrinking back, her ginger fur bristling.

"Four apprentices will join the clans, their motives suspicious. The raucous bird, the steel edged weapon, the flaming maniac and the terrifying sound, will show you all the true meaning of ruthlessness." he intoned, his eyes shining like polished pebbles.

ViscousDribble's eyes slid closed, his tail swishing.

"Are you alright?" FangStar asked, padding, hesitantly, towards him.

"I-I was fine all along." he muttered, shaking.

"Do you...remember what happened?"

"Yes. I-I delivered a prophecy!"

"Of course you did! You're a medicine cat! That's part of your job!"

"But I've never done that before!"

"Well, you are relatively new. ToothClawer only died a few moons ago."

"I-I still can't believe it!"

"What do you think it means?"

"I...I don't know."
