Do you wish barchie had dated at some point between seasons 1-4? Part of me wishes we got to see it but another part of me thinks that after the time jump was always the right time. I think the problem was bughead should have ended a lot sooner and varchie would end up together as default because Archie can’t be single because that made him a threat to bughead. The fact Archie or Betty being single was an immediate threat to bughead and varchie but Jughead and Veronica being single was never a threat to barchie was very telling.

No, I answered this semi-recently but I wouldn’t. I *would* have wanted more angst, pining, conversations, build up, friendship scenes etc. I really wish we had stuff like follow up from their kiss in Season 2. And maybe more sneaking around/illicit affairs in Season 4. But Barchie’s slowburn (even if neglected for entire seasons lol) is one of the main reasons I simply love them.

But I agree Bughead was the major thing that held them back pre-time jump. I always say Archie/Betty/Jughead were the real love triangle of the show as opposed to the classic one. I mean, Archie was 100% ready to throw his relationship with Veronica away for Betty in 4x18 but she was the one not ready (hadn’t processed she was falling out of love with Jughead yet). And if you want to go back even further, Veronica and Archie just kind of got together as default in the end of Season 1 but Archie still literally puts out feelers to Betty/suggests he thought it would be them first. Yikes.

veronica’s best options for romantic pairings would be beronica, cheronica and jeronica. i would like to say veggie as well but i fear they are too toxic even though they seem to fit so well together.

beronica is just such a good romantic pairing. i mean even when i was just reading the comics before riverdale premiered, i wished betty and veronica would get together instead of fighting over archie lol. they are so cute together and i’m so happy that season 7 really showed that they indeed are. i wish they kissed way more on screen.

i am such a big fan of cheronica. they would be the sexiest couple ever. i think about the season 6 cheronica kiss so much. they were both so into it and it’s so obvious they have thought about fucking each other. even back in season 1, i think veronica wanted to kiss cheryl really bad. also, if they lived together, imagine what their place would look like. imagine it. and imagine the portraits cheryl would paint of veronica and hang up on the walls. there should’ve been more cheronica scenes.

jeronica is kinda perfect honestly and it’s a shame we don’t see veronica and jughead together a lot in the show. they are perfect for each other actually. i could watch them gush over films and books together for hours. imagine all the movie dates they could have.

now, for her worst options for romantic pairings … i’d have to say varchie is one of them. it just cannot work out with hiram in the picture. also, her and archie want different things in life so they would be unhappy if they stayed together. i guess veggie could fit here too since i just said it was pretty toxic but they do have really good chemistry together. the writers just fucked it up for them unfortunately.

my unsolicited opinion on Riverdale friends-to-lovers arcs: Beronica works beautifully and Barchie doesn't.

at *all* points throughout the show, it is so apparent that Betty and Veronica love each other. they're both willing to put their romantic desire for Archie aside for the other's happiness. they're both there for each other, constantly and consistently. and when they kiss, it's almost as if nothing really changes; their love has *always* transcended the platonic/romantic divide.

genuine one-on-one platonic Barchie scenes are sparse, which makes the whole thing feel a little like they're settling for who they're "supposed" to love. like, they definitely love one another as friends, but they pretty consistently choose their romantic partners and/or other central friendship (Beronica/Jarchie) over one another. I feel like they only put each other *first* when they're dating.

interestingly! both Varchie and Bughead seem to genuinely support one another even when broken up. (these are both lovers-to-friends arcs, though, so the dynamic is a little different. but the *friends* part feels genuine, which makes me feel good about a potential reunion.)

I want friends-to-lovers that feel like they're finally naming what's been possible all along! that honor the serious relationships that came before them! that would've been best friends no matter what! that want the other one to be happy above all else!

Finished my Riverdale season 1 rewatch!!!

Some quick random thoughts:

I find Alice to be utterly INSUFFERABLE in this first season. Wow. I don’t like her in general, but I fcking hate her in S1 lol.

Bughead actually started out so sweet, I liked them together this season. Why did they have to ruin it?! Their “I love you” in the finale… 🥺

FP Jones & Joaquin DeSantos, you both deserved so much better

Why did Kevin have more chemistry with Joaquin than any of his future love interests until Clay…? Justice for Joavin!

I like Hermione in the beginning of the season, but as soon as Hiram is said to be coming back into the picture, BOOM, she sucks. Another reason their relationship is trash.

I love the Jughead-FP stuff, genuinely heartbreaking

Cheryl’s meanness never made me hate her, even before Toni came in & calmed that bitchiness down. Her “crazier than a serial killer on bath salts” line had me ROLLING.

Archie was such a wh*re this season omg. He dated, kissed, or had something romantic with almost everyone, like damn boy.

Fred Andrews will ALWAYS be the best adult character on this show (Pop’s is a close 2nd). Just a wholesome, good person ugh.

Archie fckin’ up his hands trying to save Cheryl from the ice got me really emotional, actually. Shoulda made them besties, idc!

THOUGHT EXERCISE TIME you have to script one (1) hiram/archie kiss into the existing show somewhere. no plot impact at all, it's never going to be brought up again onscreen it just becomes part of the overall texture of everything that's already going on in canon between them. where does it go, for maximum high camp and/or dramatic impact (double spaced on lined paper by friday eod)

3x21: "We've had this date a long time, you and I", then they kiss and then Hiram still beats the shit out of Archie. Would drive home the reference to the Streetcar Named Desire rape scene that Veronica also quoted during varchie's first time. (We don't have time to unpack all that.)

What do you think this all means for Varchie?

It means that Varchie met when they were sophomores, in 2017, Archie's world stopped when he saw her, he saw his whole future.

It means that they kissed and broke Betty's heart so decided to stay away from each other but became friends anyway.

It means that they couldn't resist each other anymore after a while and gave into it, and that he promised to be there for her during her dark days while she lift him up when he felt lost and messy.

It means that they decided to date and that despite quick second thoughts, Archie wanted to be her soulmate.

It means that they had a very intense and passionate relationship and endured trauma that brought them closer, only made them fall in love more.

It means that they suffered the manipulation of Hiram trying to pull them apart, it means that they were torn apart, broke up, found each other again because they never stopped loving each other.

It means that they planned on leaving high school together until the life hardships got in their way. It means that Archie kissed Betty in a moment of weakness and made a mistake. It means that they fell apart.

It means that she ran to him to say goodbye and hold him one last time because her love for him was bigger than that mistake. It means that Archie went to the army and spent 7 years without a real relationship because his heart was unavailable.

It means that he saw her married to someone else and was devastated but just wanted her to be happy. it means that he told Betty his feelings for Veronica didn't go away even when they were in the brink of becoming more than friends.

It means that they found each other again, worked side by side again, faced hardships again. It means that they reunited.

it means that she had a hard time after killing Chad and ended up taking a decision that cost her a lot. It means he watched her go and decided to move on. It means that Veronica tried again with Reggie.

It means that she couldn't love anyone else. It means that when he died, she died for him so she could bring him back. It means that he believed her.

It means that he asked her for something deeply hurtful and she obliged anyway. it means that even so, she knew that if she did something about it she could still grab her romantic future with him.

It means they could've died, but got sent to another timeline in 1955 and found each other again even without their memories. That she struck him like a thunderbolt. That she helped him find his poet soul.

That perhaps his emotional memories prevented him to get hurt again when she played. That they stayed on each other's orbits while pursuing other things.

And, when the time comes for us to pick their future, it can mean whatever you want it to mean.

this is probably a common choice, but there's no way for it to be another kiss. it stole the 3x22 place and now it's number one forever. and it has everything. the dialogue before it. how archie confesses that her marriage devastated him but that he would've accepted it if she was happy, because that's all he ever wanted, to make her happy. the glimpse of flirty, teen veronica in her eyes. him stepping up to admit that he and betty were just friends. the buildup ever since leaving after graduation. the buildup in the episode. how we've seen the anticipation, the yearning, the love they still shared. how the time sort of stands still when they get closer, archie's eyes, the first soft kiss just to get reacquainted with each other's lips, the way their shoulders tense up like a shiver ran down their spines, the way it deepens, their hands.

varchie coming back together after seven years apart and just letting themselves live in the present. it's perfect 🥲

the year was 1966.

veronica could hardly believe that she was looking at herself in a mirror, wearing a wedding dress. every fibre of her mind was telling her that she was making the right choice by marrying chad gekko. he was hollywood royalty, and so was she.

so why was every fibre of her heart telling her to leave this fancy hotel and never look back?

sure, he didn’t want her running lodge studios, anymore - but she could persuade him. and when she did, her influence as a producer would be untouchable.

and she did like him. or at least she used to.

love was never on the table for her. she always felt that way, for as long as she could remember. maybe it was because of her parents, but she felt there was more to it than that.

a knock on the door pulled her way from her pondering.

“who is it?” she asked.

“it’s me.” the voice of archie andrews, who was explicitly uninvited to the wedding by her future husband, came through the other end.

hesitantly, veronica made her way to the door and opened it up to reveal him.

“what are you doing here?” she said, in a hushed tone, yet grabbing him by the arm and gently pulling him into the room.

“are you happy?” he asked, as she let go of the loose grip she had on his arm.

he had no right to ask that. he hasn’t even been back in her life for that long.

veronica couldn’t bring herself to go straight back to californa after graduating high school. first, she went to new york, got her college education, and made indie films there. she needed to do something to prove herself to her father.

she met chad there. he was the lead actor on her very last film in new york, and she really thought that they could be a team. when he asked her to marry him and finally return to california, she had this dream of a husband and wife duo taking hollywood by storm.

only after the move did chad say he wanted her to be a housewife. or at least give up producing and directing to act opposite him.

only after the the move did archie andrews come back into her life. only then did they reconnect, despite chad’s protests and the longing she caught herself feeling for the other man.

so, really, he had no right to ask her if she was happy. yet, his words made her feel warm.

“you don’t seem happy.” he said. “i’m devastated that you’re getting married. but that is nothing compared to the pain i feel thinking you’re unhappy. more than anything, ronnie, i just want you to be happy.”

just as she realised that she wasn’t happy, a vivid image of a fire station entered her mind. the architecture was bland, and somehow she knew it was the 2020s. there, archie was saying words that were so similar to what he was saying now. she kissed him after that.

it was a strange image, but she wanted to kiss him for real in 1966.

and so she closed the door and stepped towards him, moving her lips close to his to make her desires clear.

“are you sure?” he asked.

when she nodded, he brushed his lips against hers.

she wasn’t going to marry chad. she was going to run away with archie. both her mind and her heart were at ease. and for some reason, she just knew she was wrong - love was always on the table for her.
