Your preparedness for an internship: your skills (and skills gap), and the importance of a resume and cover letter with respect to the current status of your own documents.

This subject has taught a key insight in the fundamental concepts of presenting yourself as an attractive candidate for an organisation. Analysing our skills and weakness in depth and using peer feedback on our Resume and Cover letters has been insightful tool to building a successful cover letter and according to An Ho & Henry (2021) cover letters play a crucial role in online job highlighting their importance within a job or internship application. Furthermore, our analysing and peer review has allowed us to prepare ourselves in way which is appealing to the future party that is willing to take us into their business. 

Within my Resume and Cover letter I have highlighted my high school education and completion of VCE studies, ongoing degree and previous jobs where I have learned valuable employability skills such as public speaking, sales skills and other related techniques. According to Dixit et al. (2019) when preparing and applying for an internship, your resume and cover letter are essential documents, as it tells an employers about the achievements and skills set, highlighting their strong skills which are rewired by a company. I feel it is important to list these employability skills I have learned as it will assist me with my application in the sports industry, additionally, Jackson (2015) states, these types of skills are required to succeed in working and professional environments. Furthermore, I want to make it clear that more two sales roles have allowed me to develop skills which enable me to communication with all various people and handle situations and depict me as a personable likeable person in and out of working environment.  

Furthermore, Борисова and Муравйов (20214) states by preparing for an internship it is important to understand that a resume is used as a key marketing tool that will assist you and help land an interview. Whilst leading up to my interview and internship, I have had time to reflect and focus on becoming better at understanding how to articulate a higher quality Resume and Cover Letter which will help better portray myself through my writing and attention to detail, to highlight I am a strong suited application to an employer. Additionally, through reflecting on my peers feedback it has enabled me to add and tweak information and to my Resume which I would not have been aware of previously.

Entry 1 - About Me

My name is Archie Roberts, I am twenty years old and live on the Mornington Peninsula. I am currently in my third year of studying sports business at Holmesglen. I completed my high school at Mornington Secondary College and received my VCE certificate. The three sports I follow closely are Australian rules football, basketball and cricket. I used to play football and cricket, but now just play basketball Monday nights in a domestic team. I would absolutely love to work in any of those sports, particularly footy. I also take my health and fitness quite seriously. I run 3-4 times a week and workout every day, track me protein intake, steps and calories eaten. So also working within that space would be appealing to me. In terms of work experience, in high school I did my year ten experience in construction and building but didn’t enjoy it. I work part-time at a pizza store in my local area three nights a week, but that is purely for money purposes. It helps with communication, organisation, teamwork and many other skills. Late last year and early in 2024, I assisted Brad Sykes Sports Consulting a few times. A full seven-hour day running a school holiday clinic with kids aged six to twelve in Bonbeach, and a couple separate running sessions with junior footballers. Both were great experience for me and showed me that work like that is something I would want to do. I do think I enjoy working with children in sport. Although can be frustrating at times, I like seeing them grow and evolve into young men and women. I wish to complete my 228-hour internship with the same organisation. Creating a portfolio is a greatly beneficial element of self-reflection (Chong, 2017).   

In terms of career ambitions I have always been interested in sport. In high school my two preferred subjects were physical education and business management. So it was logical decision to combine them for university. I very enjoy every aspect of sports, that being analytics, data, journalism, media and everything in between. The subjects I have studied here during my course I believe have placed me very well for the future, because of how relevant they are. I expect to learn a fair bit from this subject, how to be professional in the workplace, and gain valuable skills for my future careers. I have many areas to improve on moving forward, such as communicating, being initiative and asking questions. I think at the conclusion of this intensive subject, I will have developed amazing skills to greatly assist me with my career moving forward out of uni. Up to this point, I am impressed and pleased with my studies. My results have been good, and I’ve been learning so much. Expectations for this subject are simply to learn how to be professional and become more comfortable in workplace settings. For my internship, I expect to learn a bundle of things, and gain amazing experience in my respective workplace.

Flummox.

There is a lot of confusion out in the world at the moment. We seem to be heading back to school in two weeks and I am worried that things will go back to how they were and much of the progress we have made in the past 2 months may be lost. I am grateful again, to live in this state (Victoria) and I feel the cautious approach was an educated way forward. As a science teacher I appreciate administering more tests, collecting more data, and conducting further analysis. But it seems that educated way of managing a serious pandemic might be lost in the Twitter feeds and Facebook posts of some others.

Either way, face to face or remote, continuous learning is so important. 

Education is so important. 

This weekend as I looked at the crowd forming outside Parliament House I thought: did our system let these people down? Who organised this random group? Are they just antagonists? A group of conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers and full-time Facebook posters?

Why haven’t they realised that is not Bill Gates’ house?

Education is so important.

Then there has been the absolute joke that stands for professional journalism. One Victorian newspaper in particular (no names, but I think you probably know), has had an absolute awful run of late; prediction disguised as fact and opinion disguised as policy. Those articles and those “journalists” are as dangerous as the virus. Dragging us further and further apart and away from the truth while masquerading as honest.

Why would you write and publish such rubbish?

Education is so important.

I am a bit of a “word nerd”. I love trying to bring back words that I subjectively believe do not get the frequency they deserve. The eye-rolls from my VCE students usually confirm that I am on to a winner. The word this week is: Flummox.

Flummox is to “confuse someone so much that they do not know what to do”.

Those protests, in my opinion, demonstrated a lack of critical thinking and autonomous thought. Adults who followed rather than determining their own path and who sort truth from their news feed. Future citizens need to be more equipped to deal with the onslaught of misinformation that has increasingly become the norm. I want citizens who ask before acting and question when flummoxed.

Looking at the confusion that is being created and the manner in which select “adults” are coping with it all, I can’t imagine what a young person is thinking as they try to digest everything that is thrown at them each day. Those protests and those articles, if nothing else, made me much more determined to ensure my students are constantly being challenged to question every time they join my classes online, face to face or otherwise.

I recently stumbled across (while randomly reading), Kent Beck’s article “The Product Development Triathlon” on Medium. Kent has a lot of ideas floating around the internet but the concept in this article is his 3x model for product development: explore, expand and extract.

“Explore: Successful exploration is unpredictable, so the highest expected value strategy is to reduce the cost of experimentation and put a little investment into many, uncorrelated experiments. If you’re lucky, one of these experiments turns out to be unexpectedly successful, which leads to:

Expand: Unanticipated bottlenecks appear. All you have time for is to eliminate the next bottleneck just before it derails you. Once growth becomes routine, it’s time to:

Extract: now the shape of the problem and solution spaces are clear. One euro in equals three euros out. Playbooks emerge: here’s how you roll out the service in a new city.”

Doesn’t this look a little like the transition to remote learning?

As a sector we dabbled in online learning, flipping a classroom here, trying an app or two there, then...

Drastic changes occur rapidly as our experimentation takes off and becomes the predominant method of delivery and communication. Those who had experimented more were perhaps better off than those who didn’t so much. Throughout his period we’ve come to bottleneck after bottleneck and managed to keep our classes running and our heads above water. In many cases we have also improved and increased the quality of our pedagogy and developed robust, contemporary learning programs. We are now in...

Extract. The “shape of the problem” is clear. We must maintain the ground we have covered as we return to school.

It might actually be more accurate to call this period that is approaching “explore”. I feel more than ever we are ready to take bigger risks and challenge what a lesson looks like. Our mindsets have shifted from purely “does this address the curriculum?” to “does this benefit the learner?” We can’t risk returning to a predictable way of operating. We need to explore for our students sake.

Finally.

I recently observed a huge increase in a student’s result on a formative assessment task. At first I was sceptical, I did some quick Google checks to ensure there weren’t obvious signs of plagiarism, but the student had produced those responses and completed that task by themselves. A parent teacher phone call confirmed that the student had sat quietly and completed the task without any additional assistance. I asked a student what had changed and they replied:

“I don’t have to worry about other students any more. I can ask you questions whenever I want. Asking questions really helped. I wasn’t worried about not knowing the answer because we talked about it already and I knew what I needed to do this time”.

Remote learning has removed the “noise” for this student and allowed them to perform at a much higher level. 

I can’t and won’t say that remote learning works for everyone, but removing some of the “noise” created an environment of clarity, allowing this student to ask questions and avoid confusion. In the classroom, this particular student was so confused (flummoxed?) they likely didn’t know where to start. 

Is some of that confusion my fault, of course! I am on my own learning journey, consistently trying to be better. The key is reflection. This change up has definitely provided me plenty of opportunities to take stock and re-evaluate. To stop and realise. This reflection is essential as we head back towards that classroom again. The next two weeks will be dedicated to designing my own “return to school program” in order to cater for all of my students: those who have embraced online and those who are desperate to return.

This pandemic is a horrible thing, but for this student (and myself) it provided the environment they needed to succeed. I am hoping there are plenty more student success stories to come as we continue to provide continuous learning programs all over the country. As we continue to explore, expand and extract we are all redefining what teaching is and what education looks like in 2020 and beyond.

Flummox is to “confuse someone so much that they do not know what to do”.

To flourish is to “grow or develop successfully”.

Today was the day of exhibiting our zines and I am taken aback at everyone’s creativity. It is just purely amazing looking at all the individualism seen in the designs and how no two zines were alike. I think everyone did an amazing job exploring their artist and also their own individual styles! <3 

R E F L E C T I O N

At the beginning of the year when I saw the course name ‘communication design studies’, I almost had a sour taste in my mouth as the name just sounded bland and reminded me of all the all-nighters that I had to pull in order to complete VCE VCD... However as of today, I can say with confidence that this course has been one of the most enjoyable art/design related class I have ever taken. 

My main objective at the start of the year was to simply learn the skills that I had hoped for, but by the end, I have gained so much more than that. Along the way I have met so many people and made countless new friends. Through the lectures I now have a much better and in-depth understanding of different art history, culture and practice. Through the more ‘hands on’ classes, running around the university taking photos of objects (which earned quite a new stares and raised eyebrows from students of other courses...oops :p) and enjoying group actives has taught me all the different aspects of teamwork. 

I think this course has definitely taught me a lot about myself and the things to improve on. Through my choice of artworks, art style and layout, I feel like I have a much better understanding of the designs that I like. I have also learnt about the importance of time management and developed appreciation for zine and publishing designs, something that I was never truly introduced to before. I think the next step is to push myself out of my comfort zone and be even more creative on how I think, design and produce. 

But most of all, this course has taught me how to work hard and how to have fun while doing so ~

Empiezo a salir con alguien y ya estoy sintiendo que yo puedo hacerle mucho daño debido a mis problemas familiares e internos.

Por alguna razón la vida no ha sido como yo esperaba que fuera, me siento vacía y como que no he logrado nada bueno en mi vida.

Siento que toda los sacrificios que he hecho y hago son en vano. Quiero dejar de sentirme así, no hablo de lo que me pasa porque las pocas veces que lo he intentado han minimozado mi dolor y mr hacen sentir como si yo fuer muy débil. Hace mucho tiempo tome la desición de no contar como me siento.

Porque yo debo ser fuerte, valiente, audaz, la persona que jamás se rompe y siempre va a estar dispuesta a ayudar. A vces quiero comerme el mundo, pero el mundo es quien me está comiendo.

Hace mucho tiempo no me siento bien y el dolor en el pecho no se va. Pero bueno debo seguir adelante aunque realmente necesito un descanso de todo. Me siento ahoga y afligida. Llena y cargada de muchos sentimientos, frustraciones y responsabilidades .

heyy so i've seen lots of "binder setup" posts around (+ i'm planning on making one myself in the near future) but I thought it'd be cool to have some inspiration of what to actually put in your binder.

typed up notes

i guess this is a given (for most subjects, at least) but i generally like to type up every bit of content i learn in a class + notes from textbooks/lectures/etc. and set aside 1hr every weekend to print out all of my notes from the past 7 days. i recommend that you use microsoft word (pages, google docs), and keep everything b&w (except any diagrams/images) and keep underlines, bolds, and italics to a minimum - this makes sure that you highlight the important parts when you go through them when studying

when highlighting, keep the colour scheme vibrant, exciting, and constant, you don’t want to get bored, but you also want your notes to be legible and easily scanned

to-do lists

when i first joined this community i was blown away by the amount of to-do lists you could find - so i’ve linked a couple below

student toolbox (signup required) the organised student campus blues the sparks effect huge printable masterpost

if your binder has those cute little pockets on the cover, pop them in there, otherwise poke some holes through the side and place them at the front for easy access.

mind maps

after a while, endless highlighted notes can get kind of monotonous, so spice it up with mindmaps!!!!

my fave studytube account uploaded a how to: mind map video that you should 100% check out also, i discovered these wonderful blank loose leafs the other day and my life has completely changed, so i found a similar kind of thing available internationally -> here if you use an ipad, i recommend installing ‘retenote’ for mindmaps - they are way more aesthetically pleasing than most apps available, and the premium version only costs $2.99

diagrams + images

this is a fabulous option for especially visual learners (you can find your learning style here), and they can either just be labelled diagrams or you can remove the labels and replace them with blank spaces for use as a revision tool near exam season

my favourite place to source/create diagrams is SmartDraw because for $9.95/month, you can create unlimited diagrams using their templates or pre-made symbols (of course, if you can’t afford this like most students, you can just take a screenshot of your creation when editing it)

if you don’t mind having different styles of diagrams throughout your binder, a quick google search will bring up thousands of free-to-use results, for whatever topic

other

there are hundreds of other things you could fill your binder with, and many of them come down to your own preferences. I’ve compiled a list of my fave lil’ ideas below;

monthly calendar pages (you can mark exam dates, tick off days you’ve studied, etc.)

weekly calendar pages (probably best to put a couple of weeks per page, but i love writing summaries of what was learnt in class throughout that week)

past tests/exams with annotations (drill in common mistakes you’ve made so you don’t make them again)

articles, news stories, etc (this is best for subjects such as economics, legal, politics, etc., that require you to keep up-to-date with the world around you)

motivation pages (i personally am not a fan, but maybe you need some extra oomph! to get you studying)

excerpts from a textbook/book

ready-to-use post it notes at the start of the binder

worksheets, relating to the topic at hand, with a little sandwich bag with the answers in it and blutac to match the Qs+As over and over again - best works when both are laminated

curriculum summary (VCE students: find yours on the VCAA website)

  A New Mindset | Tomorrow’s Classroom

This week, the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) held its annual research conference in Melbourne, which explored innovative ways of conceptualising, developing and assessing a broad range of priorities for student learning and development in the 21st century.

When reflecting on the conference ACER chief executive, Professor Geoff Masters AO stated, “Two consistent themes emerged from the conference: the challenges of defining the skills and attributes required for life in the 21st century and the challenges of accurately assessing their development.” And this, “While further clarity is needed, it was broadly agreed that the possession of a broader range of competencies will be essential to full participation in employment and as a citizen.”

The world has gone from the Model T to the Tesla, from the typewriter to the touchscreen, from the switchboard to the smartphone. But our secondary schools, in those hallways and classrooms, what has really changed?

Most Australian schools continue to rely on an educational model created a century ago. 51 years ago, ‘6th Form’ students sat for the first HSC, now simply called VCE. In October, the 2019 Year 12 classes will do so again. VCE exams are conducted almost the same way now as they were then while much about the way we live, work and communicate has been transformed. The curve of technological advancement is more disruptive and evolving faster than our ability in education to adequately adapt and respond. Sadly, many schools remain stuck in the past, trapped by the thinking of those unwilling or too frightened to see a world that is different to what they know.

Australia’s long-term economic growth is reliant on an adequately skilled and educated workforce. Foundation for Young Australians’ (FYA) research provides strong evidence that our current and future workers are finding the transition to full-time work more challenging and feel they lack the right skills. FYA CEO Jan Owen AM has stated that with 70% of young people currently learning skills that will be redundant by 2030, the mismatch between skills supply and demand is now one of the most pressing challenges facing Australia. “We must transform our approach to learning so that current and future workers have the skills employers need and the cultural competencies required to thrive. This includes foundational skills, technical or job specific skills, career management capabilities and enterprise skills – often called ‘soft’ or ‘21st century’ skills.”

We know that the world is changing with leaps and bounds. With the rapid technology onslaught and changes to the world of work, it calls for very new learning and schooling solutions. In a progressive and inclusive learning environment, students should constantly be generating original ideas from multiple sources of information – and be doing so guided by teachers, mentors and communities, all in pursuit of self-knowledge and self-created meaning and creativity.

Many in education understand this new paradigm for tomorrow’s world, yet the pace of change does not complement this new emphasis and fresh needs for young people to bloom for the world of work in 2030 and beyond. The children born in the first quarter of the 21st century must not become collateral damage of the new world environment because of our irresponsibility to revolutionise education.

Marcellin College needs to embrace educational change and become part of the movement to re-imagine schooling in Australia and across the globe. And our parents must be aware and acquire a new sense of urgency to demand a renaissance in schooling and education, not tomorrow but now. Knowledge of the past becomes superseded when the future is totally new; this must include education. As of today, we must forget all we know, because everything that will govern our lives will change. Tomorrow’s classroom requires a new mindset as uncertainty is the new normal. This real shift demands us to enter a new fluid paradigm of ongoing learning, unlearning and relearning.

At Marcellin we are working to create an inclusive faith learning community where each young man is known, loved, valued, supported and empowered to succeed in the new world environment. Our audacious hope, Polaris recognises and develops the young men in our care as truly whole human beings. It aspires to cultivate a balance of foundational literacies, character attributes and key capability skills to navigate the world as compassionate Christians and ethical global citizens. All of this requires the entire community to adopt a new mindset.

Polaris recognises that schooling must commitment to learning curriculum design that is purposeful, relevant and transferable. That connects all learners in a world far beyond a litany of ‘busy’ tasks and textbooks toward globally accessible understandings. Learning curriculum design that embeds the constructs of autonomy and insight, by delving deeply in what makes us curious, through encounters that fill our senses with wonder. And via building one habit or mastery at a time, and over time, through learning opportunities that amplify each young person’s intrinsic motivation to emerge, grow and thrive.

Polaris is therefore essentially about future proofing. Exploring the learning of tomorrow is an act of stewardship to our future communities and to the young people who will live in them.

Finally, the most fundamental thing we know at Marcellin is, as a dynamic learning community, we can describe the kind of young man we want to emerge from our school – a student who is faith-filled, critical and reflective, open to a lifetime of learning and re-learning, who is comfortable with change, has high levels of character, competence and empathy, and a broad global perspective.

Everyone in education must look at the faces of the young people in the classroom of today and ask ourselves, what will they need to flourish for their future?

Vce já se humilhou na frente de uma pessoa q vce sempre pensou q teria por perto mas no final a pessoa foi embora? Quantas vezes já aconteceu isso com vce? Pois tudo isso já aconteceu cmg não me lembro quantas vezes mas já me sentir desvalorizada , é estranho e dói se senti assim quando a pessoa q vce realmente pensou q era de verdd de confiar vira uma pessoa de mentira , as vezes vce chega até pensar “ mas oq eu errei, será q é eu q sou errada(o) , pq foi embora” nisso vem uma semana de anestesia aquele choque de realidade onde vce pensa bem no lixo q vce se transformou não é mais a mesma pessoa pois o seu humor mudou até a sua gentileza o seu sorriso mudou e quando vce pensa q vai melhorar vem Sempre a pior parte a aceitação q aquela pessoa foi embora , é difícil de acreditar mas vce lembra q em todas orações vce pedia “ me livrai de todos os mal” pois isso q Deus fez ele te afastou de algo q te fazia mal não to dizendo q a pessoa era a pior pessoa do mundo mas ultimamente ela ou ele começou a te menosprezar não te via como era antes começou a não te conhecer como antes; já ouviu falar de Alzheimer assim era essa pessoa mas ele(a) não tinha esse problema o problema era q ele(a) já sabia q iria te ter pra Sempre mesmo se ele te usasse vce ficaria lá ao lado dela ou dele apoiando e protegendo . Um lixo né ; Agora eu lhe digo não adianta descordar mas vce já e está fazendo isso com alguém , se já parou pra pensar nisso , pois quero deixar claro valoriza enquanto tem pois uma hora deixa de ser oq é . Durante 7 anos morei, estudei, e fui acolhido da melhor forma possível em Cuba, hoje sou obrigado a ver milhares de pessoas que não tem ideia do que estão falando, julgando a soberania de um país, que mesmo com toda a dificuldade financeira do mundo, tem os índices mais baixos que países de primeiro mundo, que são respeitados por obterem a melhor medicina preventiva do mundo. Fui ensinado, e fiz um juramento ético, que me diz, que jamais poderei me negar a atender alguém que precise, trabalho em uma comunidade rural a 50 minutos de carro de onde resido, vou e volto todos os dias, só eu sei o quanto é difícil e doloroso viajar todos os dias, o quanto fico com dor nas costas, quanto é difícil comer poeira, isso não chega nem perto do que alguns dos meus companheiros passam, alguns nem energia tem, e ainda assim fazemos o nosso trabalho com muito amor, dando aos nossos pacientes o nosso melhor, sem medir esforços, e agora, pessoas que acreditam que tem o direito de serem melhores que nós, de ganharem melhor, que não sabem o que fazer sem a estrutura que foram doutrinados a ter o tempo todo, a educação médica no Brasil ensina que o médico é privilegiado, em Cuba aprende que o médico deve ser humano, deve ter humildade, deve ser generoso, isso não se aprende aqui, aqui a doutrina é que médico pode se achar Deus. Triste essa situação, só queria deixar meu parabéns a todos os que votaram no Bolsonaro, e dizer que vcs prestaram um grande desserviço ao povo brasileiro, podem soltar foguete de novo, pois o candidato de vcs vem cumprindo tudo que prometeu em sua campanha, vamos esperar os próximos capítulos dessa novela. Qualquer pessoa que age em desacordo com esses princípios trai qualquer religião e todos princípios de Deus. Ferir em nome de Deus Jesus jamais se orgulharia de quem fere ou mata em nome da religião. Satisfação maior para Deus é ver uma pessoa fazer o bem em seu nome. Levar amor em Seu nome e mais do que palavras, agir em Seu nome. Se Jesus amava as pessoas, não há razão nenhuma para que os homens fomentem o ódio entre si. Nenhum terreno onde há qualquer semente do mal, pode se dizer sagrado. Ódio a diferença Jesus, que era filho de Deus, com sua alma divina, nunca teve preconceito e nem julgou seus semelhantes. Mesmo com os braços perfurados na cruz, ele pregou apenas amor e nunca o ódio. O perdão e nunca a vingança. A compreensão e nunca a retaliação. Enquanto nós discriminamos o outro por seu diferente estilo de vida, Jesus oferecia a outra face. O ódio ocupa em nossos corações um espaço que deveria ser de Deus. Aliás, um coração que realmente tem Jesus, nunca terá espaço para preconceitos. Crer para ir para o céu Quando Jesus diz “crês em mim e abrirás as portas do céu”, Ele não quer dizer que precisamos ter uma religião. Deus é amor, então precisamos crer nos bons sentimentos e fazer o bem para ter um lugar no seu reino dos céus. Porque mais de acordo com os preceitos de Jesus está aquele que não julga e não tem maldade no coração do que aquele religioso que é incapaz de ser solidário e tem a alma escura de cólera. Crime nas igrejas Diante de tudo que Jesus pregou é inadmissível que testemunhemos crimes dentro de qualquer Igreja. Sejam de qualquer natureza. Tais atentos já são gravíssimos no cotidiano das pessoas comuns, sendo praticados por aqueles que defendem as ideias divinas, têm uma expressão religiosa e uma missão sagrada, tornam-se hediondos. The Marcellin Difference | A Case for Change

In September last year I wrote to the Marcellin community about the implications of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the rise of Artificial Intelligence and the impact on the future of learning.

The future of work is going to look very different, as automation and Artificial Intelligence make many manual, repetitive jobs obsolete. According to the McKinsey Global Institute, robots could replace 800 million jobs by 2030, while the World Economic Forum suggests a skills revolution could open up a raft of new opportunities.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) is the International Organisation for Public-Private Cooperation. WEF engages the foremost political, business and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas – including the future of education. This year the WEF held their annual meeting of global political and business leaders in Davos, Switzerland. Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba Group, China’s e-commerce giant stated this at Davos, “If we do not change the way we teach, 30 years from now, we’re going to be in trouble”. The knowledge-based approach of “200 years ago”, would "fail our kids", who would never be able to compete with machines. Children should be taught “soft skills” like independent thinking, values and team-work, he said.

At the 2019 Davos conference Fabiola Gianotti, an Italian particle physicist and the Director General of CERN, a European Organisation for Nuclear Research, advocated for a shift toward a greater interdisciplinary approach to future schooling, “We need to break the cultural silos. Too often people put science and the humanities, or science and the arts, in different silos. They are the highest expression of the curiosity and creativity of humanity."

The Independent magazine recently published an article on Monday 11 February 2019 written by Lord Kenneth Baker. Lord Baker is chair of the Edge Foundation and was secretary of state for education between 1986 and 1989. In the late 1980’s he was responsible for introducing England’s national curriculum and their GCSE exams (equivalent to our VCE end-of-year examinations). Lord Baker now recognises that the world of work has changed and as such education as we know it requires a total re-set, “We absolutely need to move from a curriculum that is “knowledge-rich” to one that is “knowledge-engaged” – not learning facts for their own sake but understanding how to put them to use to build and communicate a rich argument or solve a problem."

The Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) is an Australian non-profit organisation whose purpose is to improve the learning outcomes and life opportunities of young Australians. Their CEO, Jan Owen AM stated, “Over the past decade, there has been growing consensus that Australia’s education and training systems must evolve to ensure they are responsive and relevant to the changing world of work and needs of the future workforce”. And “Our goal should not be to ensure that young people are simply finishing school but to make certain that every student has built a ‘portfolio’ of skills and capabilities with which to thrive in the new economy."

At Marcellin we recognise that education has a much bigger role to play than equipping people for the jobs of the future. Having said that we can no longer ignore that fact that today’s prescribed one-size-fits all education structure has past it’s use by date. As such we will be publishing our new learning ecosystem – titled Polaris, later in March 2019. This significant publication will outline our vision for faith, learning and life for a new world environment. The publication will also provide a case for change, while ensuring that we are equipping young men at Marcellin with the relevant capability skills, foundational knowledge and necessary character attributes to thrive successfully in the next phase of the 21st Century. A staged implementation of Polaris will commence from 2020, in the College’s 70th year of providing an inclusive faith education for young men in Melbourne’s Eastern suburbs.

Polaris is coming.
