I was just watching Hello Dolly and during the scene at Harmonia Gardens with her gorgeous gold gown I was wondering how much it weighed so I looked it up and thought I'd share....

Designed by Irene Sharaff, the dress weighed over 40lbs and it originally had a 2½ft train (that can be briefly seen as she's descending the stairs), but it had to be removed because Barbara and the other dancers kept tripping over it and stepping on it.

Almost 1lb of 14k gold thread & embellishments, along with hundreds of Swarovski crystals & gemstones in various colors were sewn onto a velvet dress.

It was the most expensive dress ever created for a movie. It cost around $66,000 to make in 1969; $8,000 in materials and $58,000 in craftsmanship. And today would cost around $100,000 to make.

Thank you so much for the ask! It was really fun to try my hand at a s12 ship and also get back into talking about marching band because I completely miss being a dorky clarinetist. Maybe I’ll expand this au? Either way, enjoy!

Jan has always loved summer band camp. Yes, band camp means long hours out on the field, arguing with the football team over who had time on the turf that day and who would be relegated to the grass across the street with spray painted lines — which by her count were five standard steps off, and drilling thirty-second note runs until her fingers tired and her lips became numb and sweat slicked. 

But Jan loved coming back after a long summer of babysitting and SAT prep. She couldn’t wait to see her friends, get the new field show, and teach it to her section, especially since this year she finally made first chair. 

With Brita, her stand partner’s help, Jan begins pulling chairs off of the rack to set up the section. And when she’s satisfied with their work, looking over her dominion of thirty-six chairs, evenly divided into first, second, and third music, she grabs a stand and settles into her own chair. As she opens her case and begins putting together her clarinet, she sees Director Visage lead someone into her office before shutting the door. 

She’s intrigued, but nonetheless distracted by Brita, who pops her reed out of her mouth to ask about their upcoming AP World History class together, divulging how ridiculous the summer assignment was. Jan nods along, pausing to grease her upper joint cork before closing her case and laying the clarinet across her lap. 

“It was stupid,” Jan nods. “All the answers were on a quizlet. It was clearly a book final exam to psych us out.” 

“Can you send me yours tonight? I wanna check my answers.” 

“Of course, but only if you send me your calc,” Jan jibes. 

It’s all coming up roses, Jan supposes, musing on the upcoming year. Her schedule is packed with AP classes, she is a list of colleges she toured and was sure she wanted to apply to, the fall musical would finally be Hello Dolly. And she’ll have prom, spring break, spirit week, and graduation parties with all of her friends before getting onto their next great adventure. It’s a touch saddening, thinking about parting ways, but she also feels sure they’re close enough to resist losing touch as they part ways.

“Who’s that,” Brita whispers, elbowing Jan. 

Jan had to admit, Brita whispering did concern her. She follows her gaze, landing back on Director Visage’s now open office door, and the girl now standing just outside of it, holding a clarinet in her hands. It looked weighty, probably a concert clarinet rather than a marching clarinet, with well-polished gold accenting, making the cheap nickel ligature look off. 

Scratch that, nothing looks off. From the tip of her well tousled amber hair tied up in a velvet scrunchie, to her little running shorts, down to her chunky sneakers, it all stirs Jan right up, catching her off guard when both the girl and Director Visage end up stood right in front of her and Brita’s stand.  

Director Visage hands the girl a flipbook. 

Jan decides to focus on the flip book, rather than any other part of the girl in front of her, if for nothing but to slow her racing heart and maintain some sense of control. 

“Jan, this is Gigi,” Michelle begins, lightly resting a hand on the girl’s shoulder. “She’s a senior and she’s going to be joining the section.” 

Jan waves, before considering that her wave looks a little silly, a little childish. She changes to a finger-wave instead, before realizing it probably looks like jazz hands. “Hi Gigi.” 

“She’ll be an asset to this band,” Director Visage continues, “She auditioned very, very well.” 

The way Director Visage looks between Gigi and Jan makes her squirm as she tries to connect what was just said together, registering that this Gigi is in fact good, before it starts to sink in. She crosses her legs, stopping her clarinet from rolling off. She’s looking at Jan because she beat her out of her chair. She’s been here no more than ten minutes and she beat her out of her chair. 

“So we’re gonna start her at second chair.” 

Jan tries not to exhale too loudly, especially as Brita, who didn’t seem bothered before, tenses. At this point, the whole section’s looking onward at what’s happening at the front, visibly shocked as Brita tilts her head toward Jan, gathers her things, and shifts down a chair. The whole section shuffles, leaving Crystal, already sitting at the thirty-sixth chair, looking around for a new chair, which she finds in the percussion section. 

Director Visage leaves to get her scores and Gigi gets situated, placing her case just so underneath her chair, leaning forward to flip through the field show music in the folder. She’s already made herself at home in a seat that wasn’t hers only a few seconds ago.

“It’s old movie themed, like it’s classics,” Jan explains tentatively, watching as Gigi flips through the music, her face falling as she continues. “Ugh that one’s so tricky. I mean four sharps? D sharp is so obnoxious.” She laughs, daring to look at Gigi. 

But Gigi doesn’t seem distressed anymore, rather flat, almost displeased. Her fingers halt. “It’s not going to be a problem for me.” 

Jan nods, reminding herself to stash that reaction away for later. She tries again. “So, where are you from? Are you excited to be at Charles?” 

“Woah, somebody’s eager to know me.” Gigi tightens her ponytail before turning in her seat to face Jan, placing her hand on Jan’s arm. 

Jan feels Gigi scan over her, though most of her focus is still on Gigi’s hand on her arm, as though she’s created instant intimacy through one touch alone, sectioning their conversation off from the increasingly loud band room. 

“Yeah, we’ll be sitting together for —” 

“You’re cute,” Gigi says, patting Jan’s arm. “I’m sure we’ll end up in the music library together…” She trails off with a raised brow and a faint smile, but all Jan feels is a cold sweat break, right underneath Gigi’s fingertips. 

“Uh, no…we’re not allowed back there,” Jan tries, desperate for rehearsal to finally begin, if for no other reason but to get Gigi’s fingers off of her and onto her clarinet. 

Director Visage returns with her folder, unsheathes her baron, and taps on the edge of the stand. The room quiets and Jan is thankful. 

“Sure, you tell yourself that,” Gigi whispers. “Just try not to fall in love with me.”

Gigi turns to face forward, taking her clarinet into her hands. 

She takes out Danger Zone and begins fingering through. 

Jan loosens her ligature to wet her reed, finding her mouth has gone completely dry.

*Sleepless at a Bed & Breakfast in Mendocino, CA, I snapped a quick picture of this bookshelf and wrote a few reviews, presumptively, on what I believed them to be about...

Desert Heat, Kat Martin - Following on the success of her critically acclaimed work, Hot Mixer: The Viscoelastic Properties of Polymers, 3rd Edition, Kat Martin scores another round-the-bases grand slam in unravelling the internecine malfeasance and swarthy denouement inherent in the competitive field of optical thin-film materials with low refractive index regarding the photorealistic constants of vitreous silica and its elastic coefficient of refractive indices. Here we meet Dr. Heat, one time Ms. Universe, but now, after the mysterious accident that left her speed-boat racing boyfriend, Tom Hart, dead, and her deaf in one ear, a researching PhD in materials sciences focusing on photonics crystal cladding of all-silica singe-mode optical fibers. Dr. Heat finds herself late at the lab developing and writing waveguides in glass with femtosecond lasers when she overhears that maybe her arrival and the untimely death of her speedboat racing boyfriend might be no accident after all. Can Dr. Heat unravel this enigma within a mystery while simultaneously charting the refractive index of fused silica and crystal quartz? Artists in Adobe, Sledman - Once again the artist simply known as Sledman proves that no subject is unworthy of his meandering and weighty analysis as he throws yet another contender into this years’ already crowded adobe artistry genre. In Artists in Adobe, Sledman slowly, and at times in a painfully verbose and obtuse fashion brings us the beleaguered reader through his own take on the overanalyzed field of air-dried organic mud brick materials, barely a step-up from cob and rammed earth works. If you choose to heave this weighty tome around with you and (eventually) make it across the tired and well-trod finish line, I assume that you, like me, thinks that Sledman should go back to his roots to the shock artistry of tattooing kindergartners based on their verbal agreement and bringing thoughtful discourse to the subject of implied consent. Artists in Adobe, despite it’s incredible heft, simply does not deliver.

Windy City Blues, Sarah Paretsky - Kudos to Sarah Paretsky for peeling back the corner-curled veneer of the one-and-only internationally-famed and magical Windy City, Tulsa, Oklahoma, through the eyes of our favorite protagonist, Vance Hammer, Investigative Dentist. Vance is in a pickle, from his bicuspids to his incisors in trying to determine why all of his patients inexplicably develop a severe malaise that can only be categorized as advanced depression. No one is safe, from the leggy new AmGen Pharmaceuticals rep, Dolly Velvet, pushing their new signature line of laughless nitrous oxide, to good old Arthur Armlock, restorative dentistry CAD/CAM technician at the fabrication lab for crown and bridge restorations. Sarah extracts the essence of both Tulsa and the "pull-or-be-pulled" world of investigative dentistry, exposing the nerve at the root that leaves the reader braced to the point that no amount of Novocaine can dull.

"You've got a customer, Doll." Your coworker-turned-best friend Serena's velvet and smoke tinged voice crooned low in your ear as she breezed to your side by the shiny black lacquer bar you were leaning against, the silvery blond sheet of her shimmering hair flipping elegantly in a smooth, practiced move as she flicked it over one lace-clad shoulder and moved to face you once she'd dropped off the tray laden with shot glasses she'd just finished delivering to one of her many bustling tables. It was a Friday night and the club was brimming with patrons, most of whom were older men who, thanks to your careful eye and just a hint of deductive reasoning, you suspected were more than well off; in fact, if you were a betting woman, you’d wager that each and every one of them was positively loaded. You could tell not only from the dull sheen of their genuine leather wingtips and the pristine press of their immaculate suits, but from the ease with which they parted from their burgeoning wads of cash they kept neatly folded and clipped in either a grimy clutched hand or a satin-lined breast pocket. And you were more than happy to help them separate from their sizeable saving’s with the help of a garter clad thigh and a lace bedecked bosom. “Did you hear me, Doll,” Serena crooned once more, her crimson tipped fingers curling excitedly around your exposed forearm in a gesture of girlish support, “You’ve got a customer! He paid cash in full for one half-hour long private dance. And he’s cute.” That last bit had you stilling, considering carefully before you moved to shake your expertly coifed curls in expected disdain of yet another client captivated by the comely upturn of your lips and the brashly displayed slip of your thighs. Serena wasn’t one to mince words. No, she was always straight to the point, sometimes even accused of being blunt. She wouldn’t utilize such a choosy adjective lightly. Besides, cute wasn’t something often come by in this particular establishment - confident...sure, wealthy...often, but cute? No, that was a rare treat indeed. You bit your crimson stained lips and flashed your gaze in the direction of your friend to discretely survey the seriousness of her words from beneath the thick sweep of your lashes, and after a heavily laden moment of apprehension where you judged her to be quite earnest indeed, you allowed a slight smile to play about the corners of your mouth as you hastily replied. “Which booth?” “Number Four,” Serena exclaimed, dipping her pale head to whisper tantalizingly in your ear, “He has stubble, Doll,” She sighed, referencing your stage name, Dolly, with a distinct fondness as she gave your arm a playful squeeze, ”Stubble!” You snorted rather unbecomingly and rolled your eyes in an exaggerated show of disdain, but even with all the many months of training lying in wait beneath your garter belt, you just couldn’t quite manage to stem your excitement at finally, finally bagging a client that was rumored to be even remotely handsome. All in all, your regulars consisted of men well over fifty who were distinctly unhappy with their crusty wives and craved the untouchable allure of your exposed form dancing temptingly out of reach while they slipped crisp hundred dollar bills in the satin of your g-string. Lately, the only eyefuls you were treated to consisted of skin tags and wrinkles as far as your false eyelash bedecked gaze could see. Not that anyone would hear you complain though, considering how well your current clientele tipped. And yet, the prospect of descriptors such as stubble and handsome had your heart doing strange, almost nervous flipping motions in your chest, the restless appendage refusing to stay still even as you strode across the bar floor and approached the familiar thick velvet drape of curtain separating the section marked PRIVATE in stark lettering from the rest of the neon-clad club. “Number four,” you murmured to the imposing bouncer positioned at the entrance, some tall, broad man you dimly recognized as a blond haired, blue eyed Russian named Dmitri, and with a subtle nod and a lazy smile cast in the distinct direction of your thong bedecked ass he assented, letting you pass with the hefty dip of one muscle packed shoulder. You nodded back to him in thanks, giving him all the gratuity he required in the form of the generous swish of your hips as you strode away, in the direction of the private room marked Four in gold macramé letters. You paused just outside of the secluded space, bracing a deceptively steady hand on the sumptuous crimson velvet of the entrance curtain as you seized the rare stolen moment of alone time to straighten the pressing heft of the glittering plunge neck halter top you wore to cover your straining breasts and properly re-align the matching thong that graced the supple curves of your brimming hips. Sheer thigh high stockings skimmed the long flexing lines of your legs, running all the way down to the crystal embossed straps of your platform heels, which thudded discreetly on the plush carpeting as you took a steeling breath and abruptly swept that impeding heft of velvet aside to step forward into the room.

3 Songs you Really Like..

if you are reading this, most likely you have been asked (sometimes multiple times on different accounts if you are the possessor of more than one), about three favorite songs. I think about 20-30% of users chose not to respond, but unless i recently added you, or you recently added me in the last week (and a few of you even here were not so lucky) you probably got this message. I just wanted to explain that this list of songs is insanely long.
