I think there are more flower gods in the Bug Fables world.
The known ones have serial numbers, as given by those accursed monitors:
M-001 "Mars"
V-012 "Venus"
P-183 "Pluto"
Discoveries can have serial numbers too, so this doesn't inherently conflict with Venus being around back when civilization was just beginning. But then, why the gap between Mars and Venus?
Well, Venus's number is V-012. All the known flower gods are named after Roman gods. Specifically, members of Dii Consentes, the Roman version of the Greek's Olympians (Except Pluto, but I'll get into that). Which there are twelve of.
The complete list of these gods is: Jupiter (king of the gods and god of the sky), Juno (queen of the gods and goddess of marriage), Neptune (god of water and the sea), Minerva (goddess of wisdom and arts), Mars (god of war and an agricultural guardian), Venus (goddess of love and beauty), Apollo (god of music, healing, the sun, etc.), Diana (goddess of hunting, childbirth, and the moon), Vulcan (god of fire and metalworking), Vesta (goddess of family and the hearth), Mercury (god of travellers and commerce), Ceres (goddess of agriculture and fertility). If I got any wrong, please correct me; my knowledge comes from Wikipedia and Greek mythology.
The one flower god we've met doesn't line up: Venus the plant is a harvest goddess, not a love goddess. There is a fertility comparison to be made, but still. Roman flower gods! At least ten more of them!
And now to talk about Pluto. I stand by my belief that they are a creation of Upper Snakemouth, but their name is significant. Pluto the god is the ruler of the underworld and the god of the afterlife. This makes sense for a game about immortality, and a facility obsessed with cheating death. Pluto is also not in Dii Consentes, which matches the plant being far younger and having a much higher serial number than its siblings. (The god Pluto is as old as his siblings, but here it's thematic.)
(Side note: according to Wikipedia, Pluto was one of the names for Hades that eventually became a name for the Roman god[s] of the underworld, Orcus and Dis Pater. I think that's what I just read. Why can nothing be easy?)
#gotta love it when you sit down to theorize about flowers in a video game#and you end up looking up Roman gods#another side note: what would the everlasting sapling's name be?#what a twist if it was pluto#but sadly the timeline doesn't work#unless there was time travel...#final note just because: the fourth monitor is not leif#i don't know who it is but i will die on this hill#i'm tired and can't think right#why do i always make these theory posts at 11 pm on school nights#bug fables#bug fables spoilers#< probably#venus bug fables#pluto bug fables#mars bug fables#fan theory

Finally, we get the opportunity to put our Spy Cards worldbuilding in a work. Though there are many questions about such things as "regulation" "how these cards are printed" "who approves a single spy card", and so on, we are here to present a bold new take: this game is based like 60% on obscure roach memory-reading tech that got turned into a card game with absolutely No card-game-related intentions included in the original tech and most of the card vetting is just from the fact that there aren't too many card printers out there and most of them make cards that need to be translated from Roach.
Strictly speaking, as a card game, it is not a terribly good or well-balanced one. It's popular primarily because of a mix of the difficulty involved in getting the data for high-level cards, the fun of seeing the variety of monsters that can be brought to the table, and the incredible amounts of ham and drama that goes into specifically the professional scene.
#we speak#bug fables#bold and new because we think that only maybe three people have even asked questions about the semantics ofc#notable points: professional spy cards is an entirely different thing from competitive spy cards#and the overlap between fanbases means that there is occasionally some REALLY incomprehensible beef about deck composition#also every time that carmina uses astotheles' card in one of her decks she has to pay him royalties#this is because he approached her personally about it. it was an Experience.#the roach tech thing also means that like a decent chunk of high level spy cards players know like. a handful of words in roach#competitive spy cards is generally smaller than professional and involves shit like actual deck composition and like#trying to get ahold of That One OP Card so that you can utterly crush people at the local tournament. actual card geek shit.#professional spy cards is basically wrestling in card game form and does NOT optimize the decks very well#because 99% of the draw of PROFESSIONAL spy cards is that youre gonna watch a whole bunch of people roleplay elaborate storylines#while also playing a game where most professional venues will invest in tech to read card crystals and summon appropriate effects#its a spectacle sport. specifically a spectacle sport where the actual game is mostly framework for Cool Monsters and Interpersonal Drama#carmina is a heel#this might be slightly incoherent but we'll clean it up later maybe. we are taking a break from sketching comms to write rn

Bugtober day 8: Lore
"Pluto has taken to its environment very nicely."
(what do you mean it's day 10???)
#i read exactly one fanfic with an offhand mention of Pluto being a Snakemouth creation#and now that is true to me#this Pluto is based off of a rafflesia flower!#they are parasitic and capable of horizontal gene transfer from their hosts#which is how Pluto got leaves and tendrils here#that's probably not how HGT works#but since Bug Fables has a giant magic crystal that keeps the monsters away i think i can take some liberties with science#anyway Pluto is currently stored somewhere in the Sophie Petal area#and Venus is aware of her presence#they trade stories#but Mars is too far away to communicate easily :(#wow these tags got away from me#anyway#bug fables#bug fables spoilers#bugtober#bugtober 2024#pluto#pluto bug fables

Febuwhump Day 15 - "Who did this to you?"
The We Forgot To Post Some Prompts Special, part two. We're linking the index here. This one's more Scarlet In The Worst Possible Situations.
"And what on the path could put in a state like that? I know I'm not an ant, but I don't think that a trip to see the queen is that treacherous."
"Ah, I appreciate your concern, but I'm not-" Scarlet cut himself off as the moth set a heavy paw on his shoulder, their scent shading to concern in what he was almost certain was a trained response by now. He could practically taste the sympathy in their scent, carefully laid to mask the trace scents he'd been following- they knew what they were doing, he was sure, and trying to work out what motive could possibly lead a bug to pretend at warmth like that made his wings itch for the safety of open air.
Scarlet quickly checked to make sure that his stress pheromones were still out of production. Something was giving him a very, very bad feeling about this.
"It was nothing," Scarlet said. "Just me getting a bit lost."
"So you've been saying," the moth agreed. They didn't move a muscle. He couldn't help but feel the slightest bit skittish at the clearly-trained scent they were still putting off. What were they playing a role for?
Scarlet racked his memory, trying to remember if he'd done anything to prompt it. His memories of the past week were entirely too blurry to parse, muddled in the haze of whatever substance he'd had to clear from his bloodstream- indistinct rivulets of thought that he hadn't the time or the presence of mind to parse. Everything was a mess of texture, the taste of rose tea, the distinct feeling that something had gone wrong, the presence of a bug he couldn't name melted into his side-
"I don't think that nothing breaks shell like that. I don't think that nothing splinters carapace, or layers a scarf to hide beetle-horn wounds, or drugs a bug to the gills on nectar that'd have to have been harvested during a festival that happened months ago. I especially don't think that nothing lands a bug on enough of something to have him cuddling up to my daughter like letting go for a split second will stop his heart dead."
The moth ruffled their wings, a faint steel underlining their voice. "Doing something like that needs intent. Needs effort. Needs a bug behind it - and I know for a fact that it's too far out of season to find Venus Bud nectar in the wild. Be honest with me. Who did this to you?"
#whump#my posts#writing#febuwhump#febuwhump2024#febuwhumpday15#“who did this to you?”#bug fables#monsieur scarlet#grandpa#<actual name of that guy#this situation is venus's fault btw. unfortunately “god did it” isn't on anyone's bingo boards here. scarlet doesnt even know she exists#we know it is not february but we've long since reached the point of fuckit and we also. fucking forgor things#our organization system. beautiful.

If they're still bugs and Kira is still human, neither is on the other's radar and nothing happens. If Kira is a bug, however, it depends largely on who he happens to target and where he is. If Team Snakemouth ends up on the case and he's anywhere within Venus's range, he will go down in short order; perhaps being brought in by the team, but they're just working on a tip. If only he hadn't felt the need to monologue to himself!
If he's based outside of Bugaria and they still become aware of each other - some distant place Snakemouth is visiting/exploring/etc - the odds turn against the team some.
They might end up on his radar first, being falsely (or even correctly) accused of a crime. Assuming correct names are given and it's a big enough crime to draw Kira's fire, Vi and Kabbu are almost certainly dead, Leif perhaps surviving due to their unique condition. Either way, I think 2/3 dead counts as "would not survive", and this poll isn't whether Leif by themselves could solve the murders. If they're lucky, some shenanigans may have lead to them already using fake names (or incorrect names being announced) and thus all surviving. At least for now.
The team's biggest (potential) boon here is whether or not Leif can sense the Death Note and/or Ryuk. They can sense some types of magic (definitely crystal magic and Venus, but not whatever the Tarantula was doing), so if they can sense the Death Note at work, then they might be able to track down Kira.
Here's the most likely/best-case scenario, in my mind, for Team Snakemouth to successfully stop Kira without Venus's help:
The team (or Leif, at least) happens to be near a Kira Murder. Leif recognizes a pulse of magic at the time of the death, and tells their teammates. Kabbu will want to stop this murderer and Vi will think mysteries are out of their skill set. They likely return to their original objective (with Kabbu at least resolving to look for clues on the side).
Later, Leif happens to feel the same magic as before. The team quietly follows the magic to its strongest source, probably following Kira home. Here, they break in and apprehend him, Leif quick to disarm him of the dangerous artifact. They're surprised to find that burning it works fine, and the artifact is destroyed.
No one believes them about Kira so they're wanted for breaking, entering, assault, and theft.
So, if "recognizing the murder is happening, finding the culprit and weapon, and stopping the murder" is enough to get credit for solving the Bug Kira Murders? Yes - depending on the interactions between the rules of the magic/theology systems and some happenstance (the amount of time they spend walking around - at least when we play - suggests it would be a matter of time more than chance). If they have to figure out all the rules about real names and faces etc first to get credit? No, probably not, but who cares about that nonsense when the deaths have stopped?
If they, as bugs, were brought onto the humans' detective team (the level of logic I think this blog operates on, given how the character speaks about previous hires), a similar scenario could play out. L has narrowed the search area significantly, and they'd definitely suspect magic. Secret operatives Beemerang, Frost, and Green Ranger set out to... see if there's anywhere Leif can sense Murder Magic going on.
Due to the size difference, there's no way they could accost Human Kira themselves, but if they identify him then they could spy on him (mostly Vi, the only one capable of flight). If news of the existence of sapient bugs has been a well-enough kept secret, Light wouldn't suspect an apocritan agent and she'd probably be able to figure out quite a bit depending on how long she was spying. Even if the testimony of a bee isn't accepted in court, the information could likely prove useful to the human agents. Does that count as solving, or is it merely helping?
Also important to note: This is based on our loose remembrance of the plot of Death Note, a show we never finished watching.
#this is about as written out as any fic weve ever quote unquote written#bug fables#leif bug fables#vi bug fables#kabbu bug fables#team snakemouth#zasp would you like to give your personal opinion on if they could do it. being a coworker#some power way higher than venus loved those fools i wouldnt doubt it - zasp#lovely break from nothing but sonic since last november. but back to the robots!#im subjecting orbot to Horrors <3 - kris
