Former Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer Fred White Dies at 67
Former Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Fred White died New Year’s Day, his brother and former bandmate, bassist Verdine White, said.
Fred White was 67; no cause of death was given.
“Our family is saddened today with the loss of an amazing and talented family member,” Verdine White of his younger brother.
“ … But more than that at home and beyond, he was the wonderful bro that was always entertaining and delightfully mischievous. And we could always count on him to make a seemingly bad situation more lighthearted.”
Fred White earned a gold record at age 16 for playing on Donny Hathaway’s Live LP. The then joined EWF in 1974 just in time for the band’s blockbuster That’s the Way of the World album. He remained with the group for a decade and was one of nine members inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Lenny Kravitz eulogized the drummer as “a true king” and cited him as an influence on his own music.
“May Fred White rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.

Bishops Gala Continued: The Elements Personified
If I told you that I’ve tried to see EWF since 2014, would you believe me? Story time.
One day I’d prepare to travel to L.A. Y’all know how I feel about the City of Angels. This would be one of my lengthier visits as I was there for a week (and a day). Going to L.A. didn’t require an itinerary, but there are few things I knew I wanted to experience-The Arsenio Hall Show was one of them. I arranged for us to get tickets to the show where Earth, Wind, & Fire would be the musical guests. Once the tickets were secured, I thought of this experience for days at a time! What would it be like to be in a live studio audience on a talk show? My young, blogger-self could not wait!
Tumblr media
Fast forward or slow forward. L.A. traffic absolutely sucks, right? I remember my bf and I being on the highway, going steady, then coming to an abrupt stop. We’d gotten caught in traffic just minutes before reaching Studio City where the show was filmed. We finally find street parking, walk towards the gate with 5 minutes to spare and BAM! Security stops us in our tracks to let’s us know that we could not enter the set. We arrived too late. Disappointment came over me, maybe even a little sadness… but we managed to take advantage of the time were in the area, visiting one of the best record stores I’d ever been to.
Anywho… for the next 8 years, I’d miss EWF shows in the Midwest. In 2021, I’d travel to Vegas AFTER EWF’s residency at The Venetian would be over. We literally missed them by a couple of weeks. In 2022, got $600 tickets for a show in Dallas and EWF announced they were touring with Headliner, Santana. Unfortunately, he would become ill, rescheduling the dates to Spring of 2023. I truly thought it wasn’t going to happen for me to witness this amazing band. And then, I got a call of a lifetime…. A dear friend of mine told me they needed my help with an upcoming event. Let’s just say, the rest is history. I finally got to see EWF in one of the most memorable and personable settings-Bishop’s Gala. One of the most beautiful things I adore about nonprofit work is that it connects you with amazing people. In any room I step in, my goal is to be remembered. This call was unexpected, and it was incredibly rewarding.
I love you, Earth, Wind, & Fire! ❤️

The 10's also shocked us by causing many veteran musicians to stop their recording hiatuses as if the world was on fire or something. I mean, if I told you Earth, Wind & Fire continued to release records during the previous decade, you might've done a double take. Sure, you can expect them to tour, but to record? Then again, the 10's did show their influence to be present in the opuses of many of their genre, which is why one can be slightly disappointed that Now, Then & Forever sounds so safe. Mind you, the album is a pleasant listen, yet you wish they would've done something more … in the style of their past? No, you just want to hear them stretching themselves more, yet the absence of some key members on that one might have something to do with that.

Earth, Wind & Fire Day: 10 Things We Can Learn From Maurice White and EWF
Celebrating Earth, Wind & Fire Day with 10 Things We Can Learn From Maurice White & EWF! (I'm still on my social media hiatus, but that doesn't mean the scheduled posts ain't comin'...)
“Do you remember, the 21st night of September? That’s right, it’s September 21, “Earth, Wind & Fire Day” (yes, it’s an official day)!  And as far as I can tell, there is no song in history whose lyrics were the determining factor in the selected date to commemorate the success, impact and legacy of a group.  For the sake of those who don’t know me or have never read what I had to say about them…

from 1983, produced by Larry Dunn and Verdine White of Earth Wind & Fire, and cowritten with Allee Willis (who also cowrote a few EW&F songs.)
It's about how kids who understand computers will be the future
There is a vocoder solo
This was my absolute favorite band as a teen, in part because they did do goofy stuff like this (while being very good musicians) (there is a song on the same album as this about dreaming you're being judged by Ra in the afterlife)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to José Areas, Roy Acuff, Jr., Benny Benjamin, David Bowie’s 1975 single “Fame,” Manny Charlton (Nazareth), my friend Mark Clarke (Colosseum, Ian Hunter, Monkees, Tempest), Tom Dawes (Cyrkle), Donovan’s 1970 OPEN ROAD album, Ileanna Douglas, Don Ellis, Lynne Frederick, Sarah Geronimo, Steve Goodman, gospel singer Henrietta Hadley, Johnny Hodges, Iman, Gibson Kente, Henry Knox, Rita Marley, Martin & Lewis (1946), producer/musician/composer Scott Mathews, Thurston Moore, Maxfield Parrish, Public Image Ltd. (1979), Nirmal Purja, Annie Ross, the 1969 Seattle Pop Festival, The Supreme’s 1966 single “You Can’t Hurry Love,” Emmett Till, Verdine White (Earth Wind & Fire), Bruce Woodley, D.B. Woodside, and drummer/band leader Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds, the legendary British Invasion rock band credited for birthing “psychedelic rock” and was the launch pad for Led Zeppelin, Renaissance, and other notables. In 2007 I wrote a paper about The Yardbirds song “Over Under Sideways Down,” which I point to as an ultimate meme for the 1960s. Jim was kind enough to correspond and provide background information for my paper.
HB and thank you Jim for your years of service and for keeping The Yardbirds going. On that note, here’s a cover of “Shapes of Things” that I did with singer peter chauncey.

Earth, Wind & Fire’s legal win against cover band puts spotlight on both: would you pay to see a legacy band?
EWF court win begs the following question: would you pay good money to see a cover band or a group with none or very few of its original members?
(March 8, 2024). The legendary R&B/pop band Earth, Wind & Fire, which still consists of three members of its classic 1970s/‘80s lineup — Philip Bailey, Ralph Johnson and Verdine White (brother of late founder Maurice) — recently won a lawsuit against a cover band.  The legal battle centered on the group’s trademark and the tribute band’s “deceptive and misleading” marketing tactics which tricked…

The Masked Singer: S11 E1 (Season 11 Premiere, Rita Ora Joins the Judging Panel)
It’s time for a brand new season of The Masked Singer, and this season a new judge will be joining the panel. Rita Ora, who has judged on the British version of the show, will be taking over for Nicole Scherzinger this season as Nicole is doing a run in the revival of Sunset Boulevard in London’s West End.
It looks like this season will have the same format as the last few seasons. As always, I post before I see any unmaskings, so what you see here are my guesses, not spoilers.
Goldfish 🐠: Was an overnight sensation. Felt like she was living in a fishbowl. A jar of hearts. Two kisses 💋 and a glass slipper. Well, the “Jar of Hearts” could be a reference to the Christina Perri song of the same name. But she doesn’t sound like Christina Perri. The glass slipper could suggest she was in a movie adaptation of “Cinderella”, of which there’s been many. So it could be any of Lily James, Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Anna Kendrick, Drew Barrymore, and so on. The bonus clue is a gold record. But there has also been several theatrical productions based off of Cinderella, and one of the judges also brought up Carly Rae Jepsen, who was in a Broadway revival of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella and played the title character. “Overnight sensation” could refer to both her run on Canadian Idol (in which she finished in 3rd place in the show’s fifth season) and her hit single “Call Me Maybe” taking off seemingly overnight. And the kisses? She released an album called Kiss. I’m going with Carly Rae Jepsen for the moment.
Starfish ⭐️: Met Steve Martin and Whitney Houston. Four leaf clover, a Cabbage Patch-like doll. Might be a comedian. The voice is making me think of Jennifer Coolidge from Legally Blonde. Bonus clue: streamed over 50 billion minutes in a single year. Molly Shannon is also a good guess.
Ugly Sweater 🧶: Was wheeled in and may seemingly be an older man. A rabbit in a hat, and he had some hard times. A blue record. The bonus clue: a sweater reading “Featuring”. I’m a little bit stumped, but I think Verdine White from Earth, Wind & Fire may be the best guess here for now. The Flo Rida record Robin Thicke was referring to was “I Don’t Like It, I Love It”, which featured Verdine White on bass. While he’s not particularly as known for his vocals as his bandmates Maurice White (Verdine’s half-brother) and Philip Bailey were, he has performed vocals with the group.
Lovebird 🦜: Says he’s a hopeless romantic. A pink and yellow heart. A wedding cake topper with no bride. A watch with #1 on the face, a pair of dice that add up to 5. My guess is that he’s appeared on The Bachelor or one of its related shows. The bonus clue: a TV screen reading “Leading Man”. He sounds kind of young-ish, and I initially thought he was “Diver” last season (who turned out to be Tom Sandoval from Vanderpump Rules), but I’m going to go with this guess again: Nick Viall from The Bachelor.
Book 📖: He has stories for days and a really good vocabulary. A detective badge and a sign for an open mic night. His mom had a huge influence on him. A ghost, and he is covering a song by last season’s winner Ne-Yo and he wants to prank a friend. Just from the sound of his voice, this has to be Kevin Hart. And his friend? He was in The Real Husbands of Hollywood with both Robin Thicke and Nick Cannon. He’ll likely be the first one eliminated, and if he somehow survives elimination, he’ll unmask himself anyway. And the height of his costume from the soles of his feet to the top of his hat, he’s barely as tall as Nick Cannon! Great prank, sir!
