The long sleep of capitalism’s watchdogs
Tumblr media
There are only five more days left in my Kickstarter for the audiobook of The Bezzle, the sequel to Red Team Blues, narrated by @wilwheaton! You can pre-order the audiobook and ebook, DRM free, as well as the hardcover, signed or unsigned. There's also bundles with Red Team Blues in ebook, audio or paperback.
Tumblr media
One of the weirdest aspect of end-stage capitalism is the collapse of auditing, the lynchpin of investing. Auditors – independent professionals who sign off on a company's finances – are the only way that investors can be sure they're not handing their money over to failing businesses run by crooks.
It's just not feasible for investors to talk to supply-chain partners and retailers and verify that a company's orders and costs are real. Investors can't walk into a company's bank and demand to see their account histories. Auditors – who are paid by companies, but work for themselves – are how investors avoid shoveling money into Ponzi-pits.
Attentive readers will have noticed that there is an intrinsic tension in an arrangement where someone is paid by a company to certify its honesty. The company gets to decide who its auditors are, and those auditors are dependent on the company for future business. To manage this conflict of interest, auditors swear fealty to a professional code of ethics, and are themselves overseen by professional boards with the power to issue fines and ban cheaters.
Enter monopolization. Over the past 40 years, the US government conducted a failed experiment in allowing companies to form monopolies on the theory that these would be "efficient." From Boeing to Facebook, Cigna to InBev, Warner to Microsoft, it has been a catastrophe. The American corporate landscape is dominated by vast, crumbling, ghastly companies whose bad products and worse corporate conduct are locked in a race to see who can attain the most depraved enshittification quickest.
The accounting profession is no exception. A decades-long incestuous orgy of mergers and acquisitions yielded up an accounting sector dominated by just four firms: EY, KPMG, PWC and Deloitte (the last holdout from the alphabetsoupification of corporate identity). Virtually every major company relies on one of these companies for auditing, but that's only a small part of corporate America's relationship with these tottering behemoths. The real action comes from "consulting."
Each of the Big Four accounting firms is also a corporate consultancy. Some of those consulting services are the normal work of corporate consultants – cookie cutter advice to fire workers and reduce product quality, as well as supplying dangerously defecting enterprise software. But you can get that from the overpaid enablers at McKinsey or BCG. The advantage of contracting with a Big Four accounting firm for consulting is that they can help you commit finance fraud.
Remember: if you're an executive greenlighting fraud, you mostly just want to be sure it's not discovered until after you've pocketed your bonus and moved on. After all, the pro-monopoly experiment was also an experiment in tolerating corporate crime. Executives who cheat their investors, workers and suppliers typically generate fines for their companies, while escaping any personal liability.
By buying your cheating advice from the same company that is paid to certify that you're not cheating, you greatly improve your chances of avoiding detection until you've blown town.
Which brings me to the idea of the "bezzle." This is John Kenneth Galbraith's term for "the weeks, months, or years that elapse between the commission of the crime and its discovery." This is the period in which both the criminal and the victim feel like they're better off. The crook has the victim's money, and the victim doesn't know it. The Bezzle is that interval when you're still assuming that FTX isn't lying to you about the crazy returns they're generating for your crypto. It's the period between you getting the shrinkwrapped box with a 90% discounted PS5 in it from a guy in an alley, and getting home and discovering that it's full of bricks and styrofoam.
Big Accounting is a factory for producing bezzles at scale. The game is rigged, and they are the riggers. When banks fail and need a public bailout, chances are those banks were recently certified as healthy by one of the Big Four, whose audited bank financials failed 800 re-audits between 2009-17:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/09/28/cyberwar-tactics/#aligned-incentives
The Big Four dispute this, of course. They claim to be models of probity, adhering to the strictest possible ethical standards. This would be a lot easier to believe if KPMG hadn't been caught bribing its regulators to help its staff cheat on ethics exams:
https://www.nysscpa.org/news/publications/the-trusted-professional/article/sec-probe-finds-kpmg-auditors-cheating-on-training-exams-061819
Likewise, it would be easier to believe if their consulting arms didn't keep getting caught advising their clients on how to cheat their auditing arms:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/09/dingo-babysitter/#maybe-the-dingos-ate-your-nan
Big Accounting is a very weird phenomenon, even by the standards of End-Stage Capitalism. It's an organized system of millionaire-on-billionaire violence, a rare instance of the very richest people getting scammed the hardest:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/06/04/aaronsw/#crooked-ref
The collapse of accounting is such an ominous and fractally weird phenomenon, it inspired me to write a series of hard-boiled forensic accountancy novels about a two-fisted auditor named Martin Hench, starting with last year's Red Team Blues (out in paperback next week!):
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865854/redteamblues
The sequel to Red Team Blues is called (what else?) The Bezzle, and part of its ice-cold revenge plot involves a disillusioned EY auditor who can't bear to be part of the scam any longer:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doctorow/the-bezzle-a-martin-hench-audiobook-amazon-wont-sell
The Hench stories span a 40-year period, and are a chronicle of decades of corporate decay. Accountancy is the perfect lens for understanding our modern fraud economy. After all, it was crooked accountants who gave us the S&L crisis:
https://scholarworks.umt.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=10130&context=etd
Crooked auditors were at the center of the Great Financial Crisis, too:
https://francinemckenna.com/2009/12/07/they-werent-there-auditors-and-the-financial-crisis/
And of course, crooked auditors were behind the Enron fraud, a rare instance in which a fraud triggered a serious attempt to prevent future crimes, including the destruction of accounting giant Arthur Andersen. After Enron, Congress passed Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), which created a new oversight board called the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).
The PCAOB is a watchdog for watchdogs, charged with auditing the auditors and punishing the incompetent and corrupt among them. Writing for The American Prospect and the Revolving Door Project, Timi Iwayemi describes the long-running failure of the PCAOB to do its job:
https://prospect.org/power/2024-01-26-corporate-self-oversight/
For example: from 2003-2019, the PCAOB undertook only 18 enforcement cases – even though the PCAOB also detected more than 800 "seriously defective audits" by the Big Four. And those 18 cases were purely ornamental: the PCAOB issued a mere $6.5m in fines for all 18, even though they could have fined the accounting companies $1.6 billion:
https://www.pogo.org/investigations/how-an-agency-youve-never-heard-of-is-leaving-the-economy-at-risk
Few people are better on this subject than the investigative journalist Francine McKenna, who has just co-authored a major paper on the PCAOB:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4227295
The paper uses a new data set – documents disclosed in a 2019 criminal trial – to identify the structural forces that cause the PCAOB to be such a weak watchdog whose employees didn't merely fail to do their jobs, but actually criminally abetted the misdeeds of the companies they were supposed to be keeping honest.
They put the blame – indirectly – on the SEC. The PCAOB has three missions: protecting investors, keeping markets running smoothly, and ensuring that businesses can raise capital. These missions come into conflict. For example, declaring one of the Big Four auditors ineligible would throw markets into chaos, removing a quarter of the auditing capacity that all public firms rely on. The Big Four are the auditors for 99.7% of the S&P 500, and certify the books for the majority of all listed companies:
https://blog.auditanalytics.com/audit-fee-trends-of-sp-500/
For the first two decades of the PCAOB's existence, the SEC insisted that conflicts be resolved in ways that let the auditing firms commit fraud, because the alternative would be bad for the market.
So: rather than cultivating an adversarial relationship to the Big Four, the PCAOB effectively merged with them. Two of its board seats are reserved for accountants, and those two seats have been occupied by Big Four veterans almost without exception:
https://www.pogo.org/investigations/captured-financial-regulator-at-risk
It was no better on the SEC side. The Office of the Chief Accountant is the SEC's overseer for the PCAOB, and it, too, has operated with a revolving door between the Big Four and their watchdog (indeed, the Chief Accountant is the watchdog for the watchdog for the watchdogs!). Meanwhile, staffers from the Office of the Chief Accountant routinely rotated out of government service and into the Big Four.
This corrupt arrangement reached a crescendo in 2019, with the appointment of William Duhnke – formerly of Senator Richard Shelby's [R-AL] staff – took over as Chief Accountant. Under Duhnke's leadership, the already-toothless watchdog was first neutered, then euthanized. Duhnke fired all four heads of the PCAOB's main division and then left their seats vacant for 18 months. He slashed the agency's budget, "weakened inspection requirements and auditor independence policies, and disregarded obligations to hold Board meetings and publicize its agenda."
All that ended in 2021, when SEC chair Gary Gensler fired Duhnke and replaced him with Erica Williams, at the insistence of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Within a year, Williams had issued 42 enforcement actions, the largest number since 2017, levying over $11m in sanctions:
https://www.dlapiper.com/en/insights/publications/2023/01/pcaob-sets-aggressive-agenda-for-2023-what-to-expect-as-agency-enforcement-expands
She was just getting warmed up: last year, PCAOB collected $20m in fines, with five cases seeing fines in excess of $2m each, a record:
https://www.dlapiper.com/en/insights/publications/2024/01/pcaobs-enforcement-and-standard-setting-rev-up-what-to-expect-in-2024
Williams isn't shy about condemning the Big Four, publicly sounding the alarm that 40% of the 2022 audits the PCAOB reviewed were deficient, up from 34% in 2021 and 29% in 2020:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/we-audit-the-auditors-and-we-found-trouble-accountability-capital-markets-c5587f05
Under Williams, the PCAOB has enacted new, muscular rules on lead auditors' duties, and they're now consulting on a rule that will make audit inspections much faster, shortening the documentation period from 45 days to 14:
https://tax.thomsonreuters.com/news/pcaob-rulemaking-could-lead-to-more-timely-issuance-of-audit-inspection-reports/
Williams is no fire-breathing leftist. She's an alum of the SEC and a BigLaw firm, creating modest, obvious technical improvements to a key system that capitalism requires for its orderly functioning. Moreover, she is competent, able to craft regulations that are effective and enforceable. This has been a motif within the Biden administration:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/18/administrative-competence/#i-know-stuff
But though these improvements are decidedly moderate, they are grounded in a truly radical break from business-as-usual in the age of monopoly auditors. It's a transition from self-regulation to regulation. As @40_Years on Twitter so aptly put it: "Self regulation is to regulation as self-importance is to importance":
https://twitter.com/40_Years/status/1750025605465178260

The Guardian Opinions
April 9, 2023
Everyone seems to be worried about the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) these days. Even technology leaders including Elon Musk and the Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak have signed a public petition urging OpenAI, the makers of the conversational chatbot ChatGPT, to suspend development for six months so it can be “rigorously audited and overseen by independent outside experts”.
Their concerns about the impact AI may have on humanity in the future are justified – we are talking some serious Terminator stuff, without a Schwarzenegger to save us. But that’s the future. Unfortunately, there’s AI that’s being used right now which is already starting to have a big impact – even financially destroy – businesses and individuals. So much so that the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) felt the need to issue a warning about an AI scam which, according to this NPR report “sounds like a plot from a science fiction story”.
But this is not science fiction. Using deepfake AI technology, scammers last year stole approximately $11m from unsuspecting consumers by fabricating the voices of loved ones, doctors and attorneys requesting money from their relatives and friends.
“All [the scammer] needs is a short audio clip of your family member’s voice – which he could get from content posted online – and a voice-cloning program,” the FTC says. “When the scammer calls you, he’ll sound just like your loved one.”
And these incidents aren’t limited to just consumers. Businesses of all sizes are quickly falling victim to this new type of fraud.
That’s what happened to a bank manager in Hong Kong, who received deep-faked calls from a bank director requesting a transfer that were so good that he eventually transferred $35m, and never saw it again. A similar incident occurred at a UK-based energy firm where an unwitting employee transferred approximately $250,000 to criminals after being deep-faked into thinking that the recipient was the CEO of the firm’s parent. The FBI is now warning businesses that criminals are using deepfakes to create “employees” online for remote-work positions in order to gain access to corporate information.
Deepfake video technology has been growing in use over the past few years, mostly targeting celebrities and politicians like Mark Zuckerberg, Tom Cruise, Barack Obama and Donald Trump. And I’m sure that this election year will be filled with a growing number of very real-looking fake videos that will attempt to influence voters.
But it’s the potential impact on the many unsuspecting small business owners I know that worries me the most. Many of us have appeared on publicly accessed videos, be it on YouTube, Facebook or LinkedIn. But even those that haven’t appeared on videos can have their voices “stolen” by fraudsters copying outgoing voicemail messages or even by making pretend calls to engage a target in a conversation with the only objective of recording their voice.
This is worse than malware or ransomware. If used effectively it can turn into significant, immediate losses. So what do you do? You implement controls. And you enforce them.
This means that any financial manager in your business should not be allowed to undertake any financial transaction such as a transfer of cash based on an incoming phone call. Everyone requires a call back, even the CEO of the company, to verify the source.
And just as importantly, no transaction over a certain predetermined amount must be authorized without the prior written approval of multiple executives in the company. Of course there must also be written documentation – a signed request or contract – that underlies the transaction request.
These types of controls are easier to implement in a larger company that has more structure. But accountants at smaller businesses often find themselves victim of management override which can best be explained by “I don’t care what the rules are, this is my business, so transfer the cash now, dammit!” If you’re a business owner reading this then please: establish rules and follow them. It’s for your own good.
So, yes, AI technology like ChatGPT presents some terrifying future risks for humanity. But that’s the future. Deepfake technology that imitates executives and spoofs employees is here right now and will only increase in frequency.

How is koko the gorilla like those dogs on tiktok at all. I get how there could be clever hansing influencing her behavior but I really don’t see how she could have done that without any understanding of language
Koko the Gorilla has been thought to exhibit Clever Hans Effect since the initial studies on her were published in the late 1970s. This is even present on her Wikipedia page, with other linguists calling Koko's caregiver and trainer's interpretations of her use of sign language as "sentimental nonsence". There has also always been pushback on the Koko experiment from actual primatologists.
One of the reblogs of my original Clever Hans post goes into this briefly and also pulls from THIS youtube video (but tw: ableism & animal abuse if you choose to watch).
What is boils down to is that Koko, and other apes in linguistics studies, were taught sign language the way dogs are taught "talking" buttons, through association. The handler/trainer then sometimes makes the leap to emotional responses much like happens with those with dog buttons. There is an excellent article HERE that describes the Koko situation quite well and touches on an important aspect both with Koko and the button dogs:
"As Koko’s trainer, adopted mum, business manager, and chief caregiver, Patterson wasn’t a neutral observer. If other scientists wanted to verify her claims, they had no access to Koko nor could they scrutinise any data. The only publicly available material is video recordings on YouTube, Facebook and various documentaries. It appears as if a lot of Koko’s signs were open to interpretation."
When scientists brought forward that all of Koko's communication was at the prompting of Patternson she simply refused to engage and was unable to come up with points for her position. You can also read transcripts of Patternson and Koko's communications and WHEW. is there a lot of prompting by Patternson to get the answer SHE wants.
There is a reason that we don't see continued ape to human language studies ever if often anymore. 1.) the ethics of it, Koko and other linguistic studies experiment apes lived in very specific and non ape appropriate environments due to the way the experiment and closeness to human behavior was structured and 2.) it is thought we can learn much more about apes by actually learning their forms of communications (shocker /s).
I cannot even begin to express how this is just the tip of the iceberg with the Koko stuff. But i guess most people would prefer to believe they weren't fooled by the Koko experiment because they feel sentimental/emotional about her, either way the information about this relating to Clever Hans is super easy to find. Literally google it and you'll find pages and pages discussing the shady and interpretive nature of the studies on her.

How to Find Expert Bathroom Renovators in Eltham
Tumblr media
Renovating a bathroom can be a transformative experience, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetic of one of the most important spaces in your home. In Eltham, a suburb known for its picturesque settings and charming homes, finding the right expert bathroom renovator is crucial to ensuring a successful renovation project. This guide will walk you through the steps to find top-notch bathroom renovators in Eltham, offering practical tips and insights to make your search as smooth as possible.
1. Define Your Renovation Goals
Before you start your search for a bathroom renovator, it’s essential to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your renovation. Are you looking to completely overhaul your bathroom, or are you interested in smaller updates? Consider factors like:
Design Preferences: Modern, traditional, or a mix of styles.
Functional Needs: Additional storage, upgraded fixtures, or better lighting.
Budget: Determine how much you’re willing to invest in the renovation.
Having a detailed vision will help you communicate your needs effectively to potential renovators and ensure they understand your expectations.
2. Research Local Bathroom Renovators
Start your search by looking for bathroom renovators in Eltham. You can use a variety of resources:
Online Directories and Listings: Websites like Yelp, Yellow Pages, and Google Maps offer lists of local renovators with customer reviews and ratings.
Social Media: Platforms like Facebook and Instagram often feature local businesses and can provide insights into their work.
Home Improvement Websites: Sites like Houzz and HomeAdvisor can connect you with professionals and showcase their portfolios.
3. Check Credentials and Experience
When evaluating potential renovators, consider the following:
Licensing and Certification: Ensure the renovator holds the necessary licenses and certifications required in Victoria. This indicates they meet industry standards and regulations.
Experience: Look for renovators with significant experience in bathroom renovations. A long track record often reflects expertise and reliability.
Specializations: Some renovators may specialize in certain styles or types of renovations. Choose one whose expertise aligns with your project goals.
4. Review Portfolios and References
Reviewing a renovator’s portfolio is crucial to assessing their workmanship and style. Ask for examples of previous bathroom renovations they’ve completed. Pay attention to:
Quality of Work: Check for clean finishes, attention to detail, and overall craftsmanship.
Variety of Projects: A diverse portfolio indicates flexibility and experience with different styles and requirements.
Client Feedback: Request references from past clients to gain insights into their experiences and satisfaction with the renovator’s work.
5. Request Quotes and Compare
Once you’ve narrowed down your list of potential renovators, request detailed quotes from each. A thorough quote should include:
Scope of Work: A detailed description of the renovation tasks and materials.
Timeline: An estimated timeline for project completion.
Cost Breakdown: Clear pricing for labor, materials, and any additional expenses.
Comparing quotes will help you understand the market rate and ensure you’re getting a fair price for the work.
6. Ask the Right Questions
When meeting with renovators, asking the right questions can help you gauge their suitability for your project:
What is your approach to project management and communication?
How do you handle unexpected issues or changes during the renovation?
What warranties or guarantees do you offer on your work?
Can you provide a detailed contract outlining all aspects of the renovation?
Their responses will give you a sense of their professionalism and how they manage projects.
7. Verify Insurance and Safety Measures
Ensure the renovator has adequate insurance coverage, including public liability and workers’ compensation. This protects you in case of accidents or damage during the renovation. Additionally, inquire about their safety measures and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
8. Trust Your Instincts
Finally, trust your instincts when choosing a bathroom renovator. The right professional should make you feel confident and comfortable throughout the renovation process. Consider their communication style, responsiveness, and overall demeanor.
Conclusion
Finding the right bathroom renovator in Eltham involves careful research and consideration. By defining your goals, researching local experts, reviewing their work, and asking the right questions, you’ll be well-equipped to choose a renovator who can bring your vision to life. A successful renovation not only enhances your bathroom but also adds value to your home, making the effort to find the right professional well worth it.

Ivy Style Values: The Blatant Dishonesty of John Burton
In the 15 months since officially announcing his takeover of the Ivy Style website, John Burton's tenure as the self-proclaimed “preeminent digital Ivy influencer” has had a decidedly mixed response from his audience. While a significant number of readers have complained about the site's quality (including a credible accusation of plagiarism), Burton claims to have "quadrupled the site’s monthly traffic" within the first year and has boasted that the Ivy Style Facebook page has an engagement rate "higher than GQ and Esquire's combined."
It is against this backdrop that the Bedford, New York resident launched the premiere episode of Ivy Style: The Podcast in December 2022 with a preposterous fabrication about his personal success.
At the one-minute mark of the first episode, Burton announced to the live audience gathered at J. Press's retail location in New York that the previous interview with Richard Press on his personal podcast (Home From Here Episode 17) was "heard by over four million people globally." Curious about this figure, particularly since it would rank Burton among the most successful podcasters of our time, I reached out to Radio Free Rhinecliff to verify his claim.
The response from station management on December 14, 2022 revealed that Burton's ratings claim was not only entirely false but grossly exaggerated, with the show having been streamed "approximately .013% of that number."
For the benefit of those not adept at quick calculations, .013% of four million is 520.
Just so there is no confusion about his stunning claim perhaps being some sort of joke, Burton stated several days later that the premiere of his Ivy Style podcast with Richard Press had already been "listened to over tens of thousands of times" in the initial hours after its launch. Given the numerous statements he's made boasting about his own success (as well as false claims that his show is a "top ten globally ranked podcast"), there is no reason to think that his boast was meant to be taken in jest.
Burton has since also falsely claimed that Home From Here was nominated for a Webby Award, even prior to the official announcement on April 4, 2023 when his program was not listed among the honorees. And in spite of his relatively meager audience, Burton has implausibly claimed that Spotify has already made him "an offer" for the podcast.
Digging even deeper, I found evidence that many of John Burton's claims over the years raise glaring concerns about the self-proclaimed influencer's dishonesty.
John Burton has used Radio Free Rhinecliff programming to lie about his criminal record
As previously reported on Reddit, John Burton Schepmoes was twice arrested and charged with counts of Grand and Petit Larceny following extensive investigation into his business dealings between 2015 and 2016. In addition to his convictions for these thefts, Burton was also convicted of Unauthorized Practice of Law, a misdemeanor in New York. After pleading guilty for the second time, the convicted felon was sentenced in 2017 to his second five-year term of probation (to be served concurrently with the first) and required to pay tens of thousands of dollars in restitution to his victims.
In spite of having pleaded guilty, Burton has since made numerous statements on Radio Free Rhinecliff programming over the past year suggesting, without any evidence, that he was unfairly or unjustly prosecuted. Additional claims by Burton also clearly imply, and in some cases unequivocally state, that he has since been vindicated and exonerated for his multiple felony and misdemeanor convictions.
These claims are entirely false.
In episode 30 of the program Talk To Allison, Burton explained to host Allison Chawla how, in spite of his claim that he was facing "52 felony counts" and "350 years" in prison (10:00 mark), neither his lawyer nor the probation officer he was later assigned could even tell him "what [he] did wrong" (46:04). Burton alleges his probation officer told him "I don't even understand what...you're here for" (46:30). To cast further doubt upon the charges, Burton stated point blank that he is "not a criminal" (47:00) in spite of the fact that he had pleaded guilty and was convicted on two separate occasions.
Burton also casts aspersions on his probation officer (47:45) by alleging that she had shown him "pictures of her friends in bikinis" during at least one of their meetings. Burton claims that he "tried for years to get into therapy" (48:07) during this process but wasn't able to do it, though he declines to provide any specifics when asked for details.
This is followed by an improbable story in which Burton is personally tasked with "spying on the homeless people" (48:40) while sleeping over at a church, which he insinuates was done at the behest of the officer(s).
Burton claims that the probation officer, who is implied to have been using an alias, did "all kinds of crazy stuff" and suggested that he keep in touch with her after he finished his probation (49:15). He later suggests that she did not live up to the "moral obligation" of her duties (50:30).
The overall implication of this hearsay regarding his experience is that (1) the officer believed he was innocent, (2) she did not take her professional responsibilities seriously, and (3) she was more interested in a personal relationship with him than any effort supporting rehabilitation.
Later on his own program (Home From Here Episode 2) with his partner Trish, he once again repeated his claim about facing 350 years in prison, with Trish stating that the charges also did not make any sense to her. She unequivocally claims that John “didn’t do anything” (32:50) and implies that the law enforcement officials assigned to his case were dishonest (33:15).
Though he has also implicitly disparaged the law enforcement professionals who investigated and charged him, John Burton does not explain or offer any suggestion as to why he would be the victim of such an extensive conspiracy.
During Home From Here Episode 18 with his teenage daughter (habitually referred to as "The Package"), Burton states that his legal problems "were clarified and rectified" (1:10). In Home From Here Episode 20, he discusses how he hasn't "dropped the outrage at that process happening the way it did" (10:50). Burton mentions his experience "from accusation to exoneration" (11:30) before saying that he is "still furious" about what happened to him.
In addition to his claims on Radio Free Rhinecliff, Burton has also referred to himself as a "vindicated dad" in one of his many Facebook posts promoting Home From Here. Burton once again alludes to this presumed exoneration in January 2023 by referencing "all the legal stuff that I got vindicated for."
Intrigued by his shocking narrative that he was wrongly accused and convicted but later exonerated, I contacted the Putnam County District Attorney's Office who confirmed on two separate occasions that John Burton has unequivocally not been exonerated or cleared of any wrongdoing. On the contrary, an official with firsthand knowledge of the prosecutions stated that Burton "took advantage of many [people]" and that the District Attorney's office was committed "to stop him from continuing to victimize the people of Putnam County."
Burton’s purported exoneration is unsurprisingly also nowhere to be found in the database provided by The National Registry of Exonerations.
After being presented with evidence of Burton's deceptions, Radio Free Rhinecliff's Matthew Rosenberg stated on April 3rd that they would be “looking over everything” before responding. But the station ultimately never replied to clarify whether Burton’s numerous claims about his exoneration violated their stated policy regarding truthfulness ("Never knowingly lie, and avoid making emphatic declarations about things beyond your area of expertise").
Regardless of Radio Free Rhinecliff's lack of clarity regarding the enforcement of their own guidelines, Burton’s numerous deceits raise major doubts about his claims of innocence and the implicit disparagement of his accusers.
John Burton has falsely portrayed himself as a well-known mental health advocate
Burton has claimed to be "well known for his work in the advocacy of understanding and appreciation of all aspects of mental health" but there is scant evidence demonstrating that this is actually the case.
Though a LinkedIn profile connected to Burton claims that he studied Clinical Psychology at Columbia University from 1988-1993, upon providing the Office of the University Registrar with Burton's name(s) and birth date, I was informed that they were "unable to locate any information on this individual in [their] records."
Seeking clarity about the details of his purported Ivy League education, I made multiple attempts to reach Burton through the Press Inquiries contact on Ivy Style. Each of these requests was returned as undeliverable. After directly inquiring with Burton through his personal Facebook account, I was blocked without any response and prevented from making any further contact with him on the platform.
Aside from any concerns about a lack of professional training, Burton has also used the Radio Free Rhinecliff platform to share dubious advice regarding the treatment of mental health patients. Perhaps most controversially, Burton suggests to Allison Chawla that applying "the rules of dignity" (Talk With Allison Episode 30, 19:00) is a suitable replacement for the pharmacological treatment of mental health patients. It's not certain if Chawla, a self-described alternative therapist and life coach, endorses this particular method of treatment but she did not challenge or question Burton's suggestion that mentally ill people can "manage [their] own head" during the broadcast.
None of this is to say that patients should not be treated with dignity, or that psychiatric drugs are always indicated for those experiencing a mental health issue, or that patients should not practice some measure of self-care. But recommending self-treatment or the simple application of "dignity" in lieu of professional intervention could very well be dangerous to someone in the throes of a mental health crisis.
As for the claim that he is "well known" while it is certainly true that hosting a program for a "community radio" podcast network could in theory grant Burton some renown, there is not much to suggest that this is actually the case. At time of publication, Mixcloud (the online host for the station's on-demand programming) lists only 120 followers for Radio Free Rhinecliff, while the station's Facebook page indicates a similarly sized audience (244 likes and 301 followers). None of Burton's Home From Here programs are available for download or streaming on Radio Free Rhinecliff's Apple Podcasts platform.
Though it's already been established that Burton's previously referenced interview with Richard Press had been heard by only several hundred listeners, it was not for lack of trying. Over a two-and-a-half-week period, there were no less than six blog posts on Ivy-Style.com hyping Mr. Press's appearance on Home From Here. The relatively insignificant lack of support from the deluge of articles promoting the podcast also undermines Burton's claim that his website is a major source of traffic. Aside from his own specious claims, any suggestion that Burton's programs make him "well known" does not appear to be supported.
To underscore the gulf between Burton's claimed advocacy and the demonstrable impact that public service work often entails, one need only look at a former California State Senator who curiously also goes by the name John Burton. Unlike Ivy Style's John Burton, Sen. Burton is reasonably well known for his advocacy of support for at-risk homeless youth and those in the foster system through his non-profit John Burton Advocates for Youth. This coincidence is striking given that Ivy Style's John Burton has previously identified himself as someone who has spent time in foster care and experienced homelessness as a teenager.
Perhaps also relevant is the fact that in 2014 the personal homepage of Ivy Style’s Burton linked to an organization called the Camellia Network, which Sen. Burton himself had previously praised for its work with those in the foster system.
Though it's not clear if there was ever any official relationship established between the Ivy Style blogger and the Camellia Network, Burton's personal homepage identified and linked to this organization directly underneath his other work affiliations and accomplishments. The contextual placement arguably raises questions about whether Burton was trying to imply an official connection where one may not have existed.
As the non-profit is no longer an active enterprise, they could not be reached for comment.
Lack of popularity aside, let us accept the notion that Burton is an "advocate" for mental health. What does that mean exactly? That Burton thinks we should all take mental health seriously? That we should be kind to those struggling with mental health problems, and that we should treat them with "dignity"? These are hardly controversial concepts, or even novel ones. Burton's ideas do not seem to be particularly profound or even unique, and there is little evidence of notable achievements coming from his so-called advocacy other than the messages he claims to have received from people he's helped.
Though Burton is well within his rights to refer to himself as an advocate, a review of the evidence leads one to wonder if Burton is perhaps most interested in merely being seen as a mental health advocate. Whether or not this may be a calculated ploy to draw a clear line in the sand between himself and his own mental health struggles, I am hard pressed to think of any notable service that Burton is providing aside from his own "lip service."
John Burton’s press release boasts of numerous concerts and achievements that are entirely invented
Perhaps most absurd are the numerous claims made about Burton's success as an acclaimed musician in a press release dated from June 2020, in which multiple performances at world-class institutions are highlighted:
John Burton is a singer/songwriter from Rhinebeck NY. He has toured the entire United States and has been featured at Lincoln Center, Avery Fisher Hall, New York City Opera, and Juilliard. Burton blends compelling and hilarious storytelling of most unusual life with a folk-pop arpeggio guitar style and a “James Taylor baritone.” Burton’s concerts are musical and theatrical experiences, moving from a riveting account of depression and prison and fatherhood and love lived and lost to crushing folk ballads and bossa nova rhythms. Burton is the host of the nationally syndicated show Hohm From Here and the leader/producer of John Burton & the CoffeeHouse Band. He has performed An Evening With James Taylor & Friends all throughout the Northeast and is presently performing a two-year residency at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center in Westchester, NY.
Upon inquiring with the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center, an employee with the Hudson Valley venue confirmed that not only had John Burton not had a "two-year residency" during the time frame indicated, they haven't had any residencies since their founding in 2017.
Representatives from Juilliard and the New York City Opera also responded to indicate they had no record of Burton having performed with their institutions.
Though officials from Lincoln Center did not reply to my requests seeking information about Burton having performed at their facilities, an online search for performances in the Lincoln Center Theater archives dating back to 1985 did not yield any results demonstrating Burton had ever performed there.
Additionally, I was unable to find any evidence that Burton has performed "An Evening With James Taylor & Friends all throughout the Northeast," much less having "toured the entire United States."
While Burton did not respond to my inquiries regarding the performances, none of these esteemed venues or events were mentioned when host Allison Chawla asked about his live performance history on Talk With Allison (Episode 30, 3:45). Burton only noted that "the venues that [he's] performed at may not still be there" before naming "The Colony in Woodstock" and "some stuff in Tarrytown."
It goes without saying that the world-renowned Lincoln Center, New York City Opera, and Juilliard are all active endeavors.
It is also worth noting that the breathless commentary in the press release is not credited to any named individuals. It is simply labeled as praise from "critics." This effusive praise is nowhere to be found online outside of the press release itself.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the entire premise of John Burton's press release is also based on two significant lies. The first being that he would be releasing his "next album" (absent any evidence he ever released a first album), and the second being that his podcast (which did not even launch its first episode until over two years later in July 2022) was already being nationally syndicated on the Spotify platform.
Burton's so-called “next” album, which as far as anyone knows may never have even been recorded, remains unreleased.
It bears repeating that the major news John Burton's press release was announcing about his album, concert series, and podcast was entirely invented.
"Authenticity is admired and pomposity is the calling card of a dunce"
Apart from this seemingly endless series of brazen falsehoods, John Burton has also positioned himself as a "public figure" who has pontificated at length about his philosophy of "Ivy" values underpinning the style:
I am a person who values thought and work ethic. I understand the value and stability of classics, and I welcome a little rebellion to keep things moving. Morals are important to me, or less controversially put, being fair and decent is important to me. I am inclusive, I like music, and dependability is part of My Personal Tradition. Authenticity is admired and pomposity is the calling card of a dunce. I spend money on quality and won’t buy anything I can’t wear ten years from now. Manners matter, but because I think so much of thought, manners are reflexive. What things mean is as important as how things look, how things look is important too though. I am a good person.
Regardless of the noble attributes he has taken pains to equate with his Ivy Style brand, a review of Burton’s recent and past history inevitably suggests that he is not as concerned with these values as he is with burnishing his own reputation.
Perhaps most tellingly, Burton has all but confessed to a willingness to lie with his offhand admission to Allison Chawla that at some point in his life he "stopped caring what was true." The reasonable assumption given the weight of the evidence is that John Burton is not the celebrated figure whose writings “have been read and praised by hundreds of thousands” but a blatantly self-aggrandizing fabulist.
John Burton did not respond to requests for comment or clarification.

Picking The Best Melbourne Removal Company For You
The prospect of starting over somewhere new is exciting, but the stress of packing, arranging, and transferring your life to a new place can make moving seem like an insurmountable undertaking. Choosing the correct removal company is essential for a trouble-free relocation to the vibrant city of Melbourne, where urban living meets cultural richness. This article will introduce you to some Melbourne movers and go over some of the most important things to look for in a removal business.
Tumblr media
Expertise from Residents
Melbourne is home to several different neighborhoods, each with its distinct vibe and character. Picking a removal firm that knows the area well is crucial. You may trust them because they are well-versed in Melbourne's parking rules, traffic patterns, and any other peculiarities you might encounter. A well-planned and efficient transfer is possible with local expertise.
Personalized Attention
Your relocation company should be aware that no two movers are identical and provide services accordingly. Find businesses that can cater to your unique requirements by providing individualized services. Any Melbourne removal company worth its salt will be able to tailor their services to meet your specific needs, whether you're moving to a single-family home, a whole office, or something in between.
Mishaps are conceivable despite the best efforts of removal crews. Verify that your chosen moving company has full insurance coverage for your valuables. You may rest easy knowing that your belongings are safeguarded in the extremely unlikely case of damage.
Modern Equipment
The removal company's employment of modern technology and equipment is frequently associated with an efficient moving operation. A less stressful and more efficient move is the result of modern equipment, clean, well-maintained cars, and seasoned movers versed in modern methods. Finding a reliable removalist near me may make what can otherwise be a stressful procedure much more manageable, if not pleasurable.
To make a well-informed choice, it is important to conduct a thorough study and think about the aspects listed above. You may make your move to Melbourne go well by using a removal business that has experience in the area, good reviews, individualized services, insurance, clear pricing, environmental consciousness, and cutting-edge technology.

Meta’s new subscription service looks pretty familiar. For between $11.99 and $14.99 a month, Instagram and Facebook users will get a blue “verified” mark, access to better security features, and more visibility in search. Their comments will also be prioritized.
The package has strong echoes of Twitter’s Blue subscription service, launched under new owner Elon Musk, who has been aggressively trying to find ways to monetize his platform—most recently, by telling users they won’t be able to use text-based two-factor authentication unless they subscribe.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta Verified in a post to his Instagram channel on February 19, saying that the service, which will be rolled out first in Australia and New Zealand, “is about increasing authenticity and security across our services.”
Analysts say that while the move isn’t entirely out of character for Meta, it hints at a lack of innovation at the social media giant, which has laid off more than 11,000 workers since late last year and spent billions on its push into the metaverse, a technology with no clear business model.
“Meta has always had copying in their DNA—Instagram’s Reels is but one of a long list of prominent examples—so it’s no surprise that, seeing Twitter get away with offering basic functionality as a premium service, Zuckerberg is trying to do the same,” says Tama Leaver, professor of internet studies at Curtin University in Australia. “Meta’s move to copy Twitter’s subscription model shows a distinct lack of new ideas … Meta has shed staff and is hemorrhaging money in building a metaverse that no one seems all that interested in right now.”
While Meta has emphasized the security aspects of its subscription product, the fact that subscribers will get greater visibility on the company’s platforms marks a significant change for users.
Twitter’s attempts to make users pay for features, including more promotion by its algorithms, have been met with widespread criticism, and many have threatened to quit the platform, although there is no reliable data on how many people have followed through.
However, Snapchat and Discord have also both introduced paid subscription tiers to users without a similar level of outrage, suggesting that the dislike of Twitter Blue could be linked to Musk himself and broader concerns about the platform.
“Meta has seen Snapchat, Discord, and Twitter launch their own subscription plans, which gives power-users additional features or perks,” says social media analyst Matt Navarra, who first broke the news about the Meta change. The idea of paying for features that used to be free has started to become normalized, he says. “The risk there is reduced for them in terms of whether it will be a success.”
Regardless, Navarra admits he won’t be buying verified status from Meta. “I don’t think it’s worth it,” he says.
How much money Meta can raise through verification is unclear. Twitter has struggled to sell subscriptions to its Blue service, with The Information reporting that the platform has fewer than 300,000 subscribers worldwide—which would bring in less than 1 percent of the $3 billion Musk wants the company to make. The Meta family of apps, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatApp, have nearly 10 times the number of monthly users that Twitter does.
Meta’s revenue has slowed in recent months, with a 55 percent year-on-year decline in net income in the fourth quarter of 2022.
“Meta and Zuckerberg heading down the paid blue check subscription path on Facebook and Instagram makes strategic sense that could further monetize the massive installed base, [while] advertising headwinds abound,” says Dan Ives, managing director and senior equity research analyst at Wedbush Securities. “That said, it’s potentially a risky move that could alienate consumers.”
Navarra says that, unlike Twitter, which is trying to reengineer its entire business model under Musk, prioritizing subscriptions over ads, Meta isn’t necessarily looking for Meta Verified to become a massive revenue driver—it’s more just an easy way to make a little extra money.
“Most of the features that have been bundled together by Meta are things that already exist.” But that makes it a risk worth taking, Navarra reckons. “All they really had to do is a very small lift of pulling it together into a bundle, and then packaging it up as a new product. It’s a quick win, and low-hanging fruit.”
However, even if Verified is a small side-bet for now, it represents a shift in what verification means on Meta platforms by making important security features and tech support paid-for features. “Additional security around impersonation should be, to be honest, a free part of using their product, given the amount of revenue they generate and the numbers of users on the platform,” Navarra says.
