𝐒𝐊𝐑𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐕𝐄 𝟎𝟏 : replaced during steve’s mission returning the infinity stones back to their original places in the timeline post-endgame. the bad-skrulls had sent down scouts to earth earlier to sus out the situation and upon seeing captain america in their time, knowing what an advantage it could be to have steve rogers’ face working for them, they kidnap him and replace him. steve has no choice but to fill them in on the details of his mission only because if someone doesn’t return the stones then the timeline would collapse. in doing so, skrull!steve is able to return to the present day timeline of earth 199999 and pretend to be steve rogers. any difference in personality can be attributed to the fact that 5 years have passed since his best friends knew him --- apart from natasha who skrull!steve left on vormir ( real!steve was 100% planning on killing the red skull and bringing natasha home. ) this is negotiable w/ natasha rpers of course. both kidnapped in need of rescue real!steve and imposter skrull!steve available to play in this verse.  

𝐒𝐊𝐑𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐕𝐄 𝟎𝟐 : replaced during steve’s mission returning the infinity stones and then stays in the past with peggy because the skrull’s knowledge of steve rogers is from the history books and the history books paint the story of boy meets girl. maybe peggy is a skrull too who knows ? they both live a seemingly happy life but steve is secretly involved in setting shield up to be incredible susceptible to a skrull invasion, whilst also aiding hydra because he realises hydra are key to destabilising the world and shield. skrull!steve does not have steve’s anti-aging factor and grows old but his mission is mostly complete. i haven’t come up with a good reason yet as to why he hands the shield over to sam . . . both kidnapped in need of rescue real!steve and imposter old man skrull!steve is available to play in this verse. kidnapped steve would have been kept alive in an attempt to extract information needed to maintain skrull!steve’s cover but he rarely, if ever, gave anything up. which is why it makes more sense that peggy was also a skrull. this is negotiable with peggy rpers. 

𝐒𝐊𝐑𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐕𝐄 𝟎𝟑 : fished out of the ocean and skrull!steve replaces real!steve from the moment he is found in the ice. maybe it takes steve a wholeass decade to escape --- because no one would really know to look for him because there’s no one in the future who really knows him, but it causes quite the stir when he shows up back on earth and declares that they’ve been infiltrated. he probably gets imprisoned straight away --- except fury might be on his side because he would have known about skrulls by that time ?? will probably mainly be writing as skrull!steve deceiving the avengers for the majority of this verse because that’s where the juicy plotty part is. also keen to write steve as an absolute dick in this verse --- gives me a reason to write joss whedon / ults!steve without hating myself

wip: passenger (sins of omission-verse)

(a little gobble of an au-sequel set after sins of omission chapters i haven’t posted yet. warnings for captivity/torture/violence/consent stuff.) 

K’arr’n leaves him the way a storm goes out to sea. 

The emptiness feels quiet and desolate and cold. The bloody cloth drags over his wind-chapped lips as the priestess pulls it away. A rivulet runs into his panting mouth and he swallows it, open-mouthed, open-throated, gasping. 

Several skrulls kneel in the pool with him, supporting his heaving body. Handling him. He's bare; they've taken his armor away. He retches and a basin is immediately proffered. 

No, he says. He turns his face to the light, the only light. Someone is wiping his face. Someone is dripping water in his mouth. So many green hands touching him, but the touch is kinder, and softer than he is usually allotted, here, in the cave. No, he says, as if anyone has listened to him in an age.  

Breathe, K’arr’n says, gently. Breathe, Captain. He puts his hands on Steve’s neck, he tips their foreheads together. 

Tell me of despair, yours, and I will feed it back to you and hold your mouth closed around it. 

"Recount it," K'arr'n says, holding his face like a lover's. "In detail." 

Steve opens and closes the mouth that doesn't belong to him, and K'arr'n places one cool hand on his bare chest. 

"Tell me," he says, and Steve could shake out of his own bones with the reverberation of his own failure. 

"Snow," Steve says. The scene is already fading. "Blood," he rasps. "Lot of blood." 

"Did you get them all," K'arr'n says gently. 

A Celestial, rising out of the ocean. The creaking of ice breaking up, straining against itself. The bright column of the milky way smeared next to a shimmering aurora. 

His hands, turning over a tiny body, checking his work. 

He can't answer. He cannot make his mouth say their names. He still has blood on him, he smells it, K'arr'n backhands him and he jerks in the arms of the guards holding him up. 

There is a knife in him, then. The scream that escapes him reverberates weirdly in the cave. The guards watch placidly while he bleeds for the empire. K'arr'n is twisting a blade in him and he closes his eyes, wills the water to rise, wills himself to sink and sink and sink. 

It takes a minute of him wasting what little bravery he has left, but the implant senses the change, feeds the steady trickle of endorphins blooming in his brain until it is a torrent. The chill of it runs down his arms, down his back. The bright agony in his thigh subsides, the dull grind of his hanging shoulder evaporates. Everything goes away, his body goes away. 

"Did you kill them all, Steven," K'arr'n presses. 

He nods. 

"Lyja?"

A nod. He is weightless. The atrocities are removed from him, briefly. He burrows into the respite. He thinks he could make a home here.

I too get the feeling of disinterest and conflict. Because on the one hand i do want to be excited for more content and maybe if there had been more closure, i would be able to move on. But not gonna lie, after the trauma of endgame, i just want to live in the fanfic world and either pretend it didn't happen or go au and just get good things happening to characters I loved. I don't like the addition of new characters that could have easily been the solution to infinity war. But also 2020 and 2021 ( for me at least) has been shit so maybe disassociating from things that aren't comfort.

I do think I'm doing a little disassociating from things that aren't predictable comfort and even like... avoiding things that I know aren't going to give me closure? I haven't started a new TV show beyond Wandavision and FATWS in over a year. I mean, I watched (and obsessed over) Hannibal but that was three seasons long and ended years ago so at no point was there any anxiety about like "oh no what if I can't see the new episodes, what if they do something insane to the story" etc and I only watched it after I'd read a bunch of fic about it to honestly basically spoil it for myself because I couldn't handle putting myself through the uncertainty of cliff hangars etc

The lack of closure after EG is a real thing for sure-- I remember not even wanting to read or write fix its post EG. I think I wrote one? Maybe two short stories about it but my heart was no where in it, not like it was post CACW or even post IW. The lack of closure and the amount of trauma in EG for us and characters was so intense that afterwards I don't even want to fix it, I just want to move on entirely.

(That being said I have a pretty intense Stony IW and EG fix it in my notes but who knows if it will ever actually get written)

And yeah everytime there's an announcement about more MCU stuff I just scroll past it. They spent eleven years introducing us to characters who's story arcs all culminated in how they save the world and eventually the universe and then not only did we get EXTREMELY unsatisfying endings for most of our faves

-- which is a whole other rant but like, on the surface, Tony, Steve and Thor's ending seems okay, Tony finally got rid of all the bad guys that have been haunting him since 2012, Steve got his dance, Thor gets to go off adventuring. But peel off ONE layer and it's like, so they killed off someone who worked for fifteen years to fix himself, the world, finally got a piece of happiness and then died? Steve abandoned his friends and this new world after saying he had to move on to get back to a woman who HAD moved on and who had in fact told him to move on previously? Thor who has come full circle on his journey and learned humility and bravery and the truth of worthiness and sacrifice and now he just wants to bro-around with his new friends instead of being king? BOOOOOOOOO--

Anyway, not only did we get an extremely unsatisfying ending for most of our faves, but then the survivors of the trauma who should have been left with a vague "yay our lives can move on, the sun is coming up and birds are singing" which is lazy writing but at least somewhat closure like-- the survivors are thrust right back into sort of super terrible things. Or into a world post Blip that is honest to god worse than it was pre Blip. All of their work and trauma and sacrifice was for nothing.

And this version of Spiderman is just-- isn't the whole allure of Spidey that he's a genius and makes all his own stuff but also lives off ramen and is constantly late for class and basically a disaster and also has that existential dread/crisis humour with a slightly John Mulaney esque "this might as well happen" demeanor? I have no interest in watching anything about Peter "I inherited Stark industries" Parker. And then there's skrulls and multiverses and the Eternals... Im exhausted.

Close the door on the EG verse and move into MCU-Earth 2 or something.

i really enjoy the intimacy involved in acts of service, and there’s always something so small and treasured about shaving,,,the trust involved in letting someone that close to your face with a knife, the intimacy in being no more than a couple of breaths away from each other, the faith that the other person won’t fuck up your face by giving you a weird shave -- i just love the layers to shaving someone else,,,and i just had to make it buckytony. this is a really short fic (as most of my fics are) but i really love it

2. broken pieces (me and you) fit together perfectly - samrhodey, mcu, developing relationship, post IW, 1.5k, K+

After Thanos, after the Snap, after Sam loses everything familiar, he finds Jim.

AU-gust Day 5: Post Apocalyptic AU

i really enjoy samrhodey, i really enjoy the idea of Rhodey only being a couple year’s ahead of Sam and Sam having a big crush on him, i really like the idea of both of them bonding when they join the Avengers post AoU, i really like the idea of this simple, easy relationship developing between them in this very soft and understated way, but ive never actually written them before this fic - which is why im so proud of this fic, because i like the story ive weaved here

3. princely duties - thortony, mcu, asgardian tony AU, meet cute, 1.6k, K+

Thor Odinson, Crown Prince of the Realm of Asgard, Brother of Loki the Silvertongue, son to Frigga the Kind and Odin the Great, was known for a great many things.

He was known for his great looming stature, stranding tall and proud even for an Asgardian, with muscles that rippled and tensed as he walked. He was known for his illustrious hair, a thick blond mane that he'd taken a vow to never cut, braided and cascading down his shoulders in thick waves. He was known for his might on the battlefield, for the terror he struck through the heart of his enemies when he called lighting itself down to rain fire on those who dared oppose him.

He was known for being a gentle prince, for always having an ear open and the time for a pitcher of ale. He was known for the bond he had with his brother Loki - how the two of them had curled around each other at birth, his tiny fist clenched around his brother's equally tiny pinky, and never let go.

But more than any of that, Thor Odinson was known for never taking a Consort, in all his years.

AU-gust Day 9: Royalty AU

Ostensibly, this is a thortony fic, but i really like this fic because of the relationship i wrote for Thor and Loki. i do hope to continue this some day, to expand this verse into a couple of related one shots that show Thor and Tony’s relationship overtime, and develop more on Thor and Loki as brothers because i think we were really robbed of that in the mcu - but this is one of my better AU-gust fills, for sure

4. the things we tell ourselves in the dark - stevetony, emh, skrulls, angst, 1.1k, K

“Still,” he turns away from Tony, because he doesn’t want to hurt him, but if he doesn’t get this out, it might eat him alive, “I was with them for months Tony. Months. How did you not notice? How did you not know it wasn't me?”

this is one of the few stevetony fics ive written all year, because ive sort of fallen out of love with the ship but emh brought it back in full force. i wrote this entire fic in 20 minutes literally the second i finished the Secret Invasion episode because there was such delicious angst and it begged to be written, and im so happy with how this turned out. i personally, am always quite worried that characters sometimes sound OOC in my fics, but i definitely didn’t have that issue with this fic, and i just really enjoyed writing it

5. 1000 lives (for you) - buckytony, mcu, soulmates AU, tws compliant, 14.7k, T

On the 10th of December 1991, the Asset is taken out of cyro, and there is a name on his right wrist.

On the 16th of December 1991, he is sent out to shoot the tyre of a car, and then kill the man and woman inside.

When he returns to base, there is a boy, no older than 17, chained to the wall of his room, shivering and bravely fighting back tears.

It does not occur to the Asset until much later than these two events are connected.

this is currently my largest fic till date, and it is such a labour of love. i don’t think ive ever worked this hard, or this long on a fic, and it’s definitely the fic i am the most proud of from 2020. im having so much fun writing this, and im really hoping that everybody reading this is really enjoying it too because i have so many ideas for this verse and it’s possibly one of my favourite things ive written ever -- not just this year

He’s half twisted so he can face Steve, and the show of flexibility isn’t helping with Steve’s mission to keep things PG-13, “but today - you are literally a pain in my ass.”

i very recently got into hawaii 5 o, but i truly love these idiots with all my heart and soul, and it’s been so long since i immersed myself in a new fandom or wrote for any other characters, so i wanted to celebrate that by choosing my favourite h5o fic from this year. the thing about mcdanno is that they really do write themselves, and there’s so much potential with them that a lot of what i write is stuff you can truly imagine just happens off screen on the show. anyway, Danny is always calling Steve a pain in his ass, and i just thought it would be funny if Steve was literally a pain in this ass, and then this small one shot happened

i want to say i haven't really had time to sit down and think of what bits and pieces of tf/atws i'm going to adapt to sharon's story. part of me is tempted to have that "dark!sharon" verse (if you will) where she is the power broker, another part of me wants to hijack it somewhat and say that tf/atws!sharon is a skrull and the real sharon is plotting escape in a dank cell in madripoor, where the real power broker is keeping her (😭). and there's also a part of me that's hoping that... there's more to this plot than what meets the eye.

but also, this portrayal is an amalgamation of various canon, anyway. i don't really have the time to delve uber deeply into the comics, and the driving force behind this interpretation really is just my love for sharon's character. so what i'm saying is like... i'm open to exploring a lot of things? and female rage is always interesting, so i am not opposed to a generally good character turning antagonistic. the more i think about sharon's time in madripoor pre-series, the more i get ideas, and i think exploring some of those might be fun.

of course, i still think that sharon at her core is a really good person and a really capable, competent spy. she's trained to survive grueling odds, and i think sometimes that means making terrible choices. i will have all sorts of AUs (where steve came back and together they form the secret avengers, where she's not the power broker but perhaps she infiltrated their ranks, where she's working freelance or in deep undercover with instructions from maria hill, where she joined forces w sam&bucky, etc etc) but i am also all for sharon who is fed up by the system that disappointed her, who maybe lost her way a little, and who now seeks to dismantle the very apparatus that failed her by ripping apart its foundations.

do i wish that marvel took a different route for her character??? i mean, for sure. it would have been nice to see samsharbucky as a team, instead of her doublecrossing them without their knowing. i do think that sharon has fond feelings for them both, and i don't think her anger is directed towards them at all (at least not all of it, and definitely less of it after their reunion). i have thoughts about her motivations but that's for another post. also, even tho i am open to adapting some tf/atws canon, they will be tweaked as needed.

i will say though, that even if i have my nitpicky issues about the show itself, sharon does support sam. it's unfortunate that they might end up on opposing sides of the field, but that shield is his and he is captain america. sharon is glad for bucky, too. whatever she's doing in verses following tfat/ws canon is not purposely to inconvenience them, that's just the unfortunate upshot of it. if she is at all aloof or rude or disdainful, i don't think it's truly personal? i think that part of her doesn't want to get attached to them again (and it's so easy to get attached when you think you're part of a "team") just in case something happens and history repeats itself.

a huge part of sharon has definitely been disenchanted. she thinks she will never be truly included in these hero circles, and if that's the case then she'll have to look out for her own hide before she looks out for anyone else's.

Fan Fic Writer Appreciation Day Fic/Author Recs!

So this was going to be just a general fic rec post for some of my favorite Marvel fics (mostly SteveTony) but I had a hard time limiting myself and I’m sure I missed something so while I do have specific fics, read everything from the authors here because they’re all really good!

Starting off with THAT FIC I WILL NEVER FORGIVE @suitofhumour FOR EVER: Motherly Mirage and Mirrors. Maria is a Skrull and I cry

Pearl’s written other stuff that doesn’t make me want to curl up in a ball and sob like Coming Home to You and Rewrite The Stars, which are both AA Season 4 fics that make you feel warm and fuzzy by the end. I mean, really you should read everything Pearl writes because if there’s a feeling you want to feel she probably wrote something that makes you feel it. 

@viudanegraaa‘s writing is really gooood guys, especially if you’re in the mood for some angst. Her fics are absolutely dripping with atmosphere and her prose is gorgeous. My personal favorites are Shattered, a 50 First Dates AU/Fix-it, The Future is Space, a 616 AU where Tony ends up frozen during Secret Invasion and wakes up in the future, and It was always you, because the Bachelor AU saved us all post Infinity War,

Dora is also the reason I read @blossomsinthemist‘s Relativistic Heat Conduction which is amazing, and depressing, and perfect if you just need something to FUCK YOU UP before bed.

I’ve seen America Isn’t Chicken by Amuly and Phantom by Del_Rion rec’d a lot and with good reason they’re both great fics

I’m always a sucker for mind control fics, and Red by @festiveferret is one of my favorites

@navaanwrites has written a bunch of Marvel Noir which is a great verse that always need more fics, and won’t let it take you from me is just superb

@ilunabarrean‘s Metronome and 101 Ways to Kill Steve Rogers  are also amazing and make me feel all the things.

When Sorrows Come by @ironlawyer is a really heavy read too and I love it. It is another fic that’s just *lies down* *tries not to cry* *cries a lot*

And finally @sineala writes all the good Identity Porn. It’s the best trope I love and Sineala does it so well. Sucker Punch is a Greek Tragedy worthy of Sophocles himself, it is so good.

      It was exhausting . . . to maintain the façade of someone in love. The human heart was weak, creating exception based on no law, no reason, nothing but a feeling. Skrulls were not immune to love and affection, however the calling of a higher purpose prevented them from becoming stupid for it. This particular mission --- impersonating the body of a national, if not global icon, had appeared simple enough on paper. Steve Rogers died in 1945 with the most important parts of his life filmed and documented, and made public record. Even the parts that were part of restricted files, were easy to obtain with the infiltrators already within SHIELD. Impersonating a dead man was in ways easier than replacing an alive one, though it did make fact checking difficult. The fact that he was constantly around a Seer and having to shield his intentions at all times made the mission more challenging --- but that’s why he’d been chosen for the job. 

      “Nothing’s going on with me,” Steve says, opting for straight denial until he can figure out what he could have said or done to raise Muninn’s suspicions. He has a laundry list of reasons to explain away anomalies in his behaviour. He wonders which one he’ll use tonight. He lifts his head, smiles, extends his hand for Muninn to take so she can come join him on the couch. Working his way into the Avengers had been far too simple. They were desperate for help, eager to believe their beloved hero had returned from the dead in a time of need. There was hardly anyone around who had known the real Captain America; the people who thought they knew him had read the same material the Skrulls had in order to create this version of Steve Rogers. But he had to try harder with Muninn --- even if the ice could account for most of his memory loss.

[I love this fic and the way it so perfectly captured Carol and Fury’s dynamic. THE DIALOGUE! IT’S JUST SO GOOD! Their banter is fun and there are some genuinely sweet moments.]

Carol won't say she wants to be more than friends, not when she has so much to lose, but she'll tell her in everything but name.AKA Carol tests out pet names, Maria gets pregnant, and they fall a bit more in love. [One of my favorite get-together fics, the writing is so good and I love the development of their relationship, the PINING and the obliviousness, it’s gold.]

kisses under my palm by neon_air (1k):  Carol Danvers has been kissed before but never by the one person she wanted it from most. [All the different kisses Carol has had, and love. A lovely one-shot.] 

Lightning Crash by Monochrome_girl (2k):  Carol is here to stay. Maria is still getting used to having her back. [Carol stays and they reconnect. It’s a lovely progression of the two relearning each other and building a life together that also involves collecting alien scraps and it’s sweet.] 

Love’s Labors Lost by lesbians_and_puns (3k):  After Carol finds a home planet for the Skrull, she returns to Louisiana to try to get her old life back, but when she finds an old photograph of herself and Maria on Maria's bedside table, they both realize how much they're still missing. [An angsty take on Carol’s return and the things people can say because life is stressful and complicated and sometimes you hurt the people you love without meaning to. It’s really good, it also hurts.] 

we were too close to the stars by inkwelled (1k): "God, what did they do to you," Maria whispers, wrapping another bandage around Carol's bicep. / For all it's worth, Carol doesn't even wince. [This hurts but in a delicious way. There’s a kind of soft aching quality to the angst, it’s premium, good stuff, you can feel the love.]

Always Falling by sariane (2k): “What do you want?”“I don’t want to be her sloppy seconds. I want all of it, all the corny relationship stuff. I want the dumb date nights, the stupid fights, the awkward breakfast-making elbow bumps. I want to take her up flying – someday. I don’t know,” Carol says suddenly, scuffing her foot on the street, “I want stability.”Carol wants a lot of things. She does not want to be Jessica's rebound girl. [Basically Jess and Clint break up, Carol is a great friend on the comfort front, and then Jess kisses her. And Carol assumes it’s because she’s a rebound. There’s some light angst over that, it’s very well-done. Characterization is very good.]

Fly, Fight, Win by singalellaby (1k):  It's not a sign of superhero lesbian bed death, whatever Peter says, it's just that Jess is an Adult. A Mature Adult. In a Mature Adult Partnership with a woman who happens to wear skin-tight suits as her work uniform and it was either become habituated to her girlfriend being the hottest anything with Kree DNA around or living in a state of permanent arousal in her own pretty damn tight costume. And since S.H.I.E.L.D doesn't spring for laundry expenses, that was so not an option. [Jess POV, admiring her really hot partner.]

He Picked the Wrong One by beckydawolf (Carol/Jess, 34k): When Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman are knocked unconscious on a mission, they wake up in a world a lot like their own. In fact, it’s almost identical. Except that the Civil War never happened, Jess doesn’t seem to exist and their Carol is dead. Oh and then there’s Natasha Stark.Turns out, slipping between universes might not even be the most complicated part of this mess. (Fantastic characterization, really love the perfect Carol and Jess banter, nested in this wonderful comic book-y plot that works as perfect background for the development of the characters and the relationships. Also the plot is entirely driven by characters and their relationships and their love - both unhealthy and healthy. It’s great)

In My Dreams by sariane (3k): Carol may not have her memories, but she has her dreams.(But, of course, she dreams of kissing Jessica. As if her life isn't already complicated enough.) [This fic takes this concept and does a phenomenal job with it. You really get Carol’s growing frustration with the dream as she tries to work out what it means by subtly asking everyone other than the person in her dream.] 

It’s A Slow Slide Into Misandry by bendingwind (800): Carol's all fixed up and Jessica's moved on, and things have... changed. [Short little fic post-Hawkeye break-up, dealing with feelings. It’s cute.]

once you live a good story by pummelwhack (Carol/Jess, 13k):  Carol and Jessica redefine what it means to be happy, in the context of coffee, philosophy, and each other. Or: the one where Carol and Steve own a used bookstore, Sam runs the coffee shop next door, and Jessica searches for more than what life is currently offering her. (Lovely, soft fic about falling in love and finding happiness in each other and your life. Some truly beautiful lines and musings about philosophy.)

Pin the Tail by Alsike (Carol/Jess, 7k):  Carol doesn't know who she is. But she knows Jess. She likes Jess. There's probably a good reason why she's not dating Jess, but, you know, amnesia. [Glorious, this fic has pining and angst and trying to deal with amnesia and it just gets Jess and Carol down. And the emotions, they’re just really good as they navigate their relationship and the baggage they bring]

Red by awesomocity (1k): If Carol had been a more self-conscious person she might have worn stale jeans for another day. But years of dealing with brothers and locker rooms and the general knowledge she was both hot AND powerful made standing in a laundromat in her underwear at three in the morning tolerable, if not comfortable.(or, the one where Carol and Jess get romcommed by laundry.) [Love the characterization in this, just a really good fic for cheering you up.]

Smell Like I Sound by Sineala (6k):  Carol likes Jess a lot. That's not the weird part. The weird part is that Carol likes Jess a lot more when Jess isn't in the room. [A pheromones fic taking place in the Marvel Adventures verse. It’s really cute and I really like the push-pull of Carol figuring out her feelings and wondering why she keeps having these moments of revulsion around Jess.]

Snow Day by Traincat (1k):  Jessica Drew goes missing. Carol and the Hulk team up to get her back (and maybe fight some ice monkeys along the way). [Absolutely delightful fic, I love the dynamic between Carol and the Hulk as well as Jessica and the Hulk, and Carol’s concern for Jess. I could easily see this being a real comic]

Such a Cunning Disguise by WhenasInSilks (2k): Carol is fracturing again.Carol and Jess started dating six months before Stamford. Eight months before Captain America died on the courthouse steps. Ten months before things like the measurement of time ceased to be part of Carol’s personal universe.Now she sits alone in the darkness of her cell and feels herself fall apart.A Secret Invasion AU. [This fic HURTS. It’s beautifully written too which makes the angst all the more delicious. Warning for heartbreak and self-loathing and mental instability]

the small rain down can rain by tigrrmilk (3k): When Jess was jumping between universes, trying not to get killed, she had wondered - was there a version of her and Carol who had... made it work? [Jess dealing with Carol having amnesia and going off to space. Really good character stuff, all the complicated feelings Jess has about what Carol did, and then Carol showing up, you can really see the connection between them, regardless of memory loss or distance.] 

Turn Around and Look Back by Sineala (Carol/Jess, 6k):  When Carol first lost her memories, to Rogue, Professor Xavier healed her and let Jess experience all of Carol's missing memories. When Carol loses all her memories -- again -- it's up to Jess to give them back to her, in exactly the same way: Jess has to link with Carol telepathically. But Jess' mind contains a lot of feelings about Carol that she doesn't exactly want Carol to know about. [I love this fic, just all the feelings, the pining, the concern, the character voices, it’s all really good.]

Unshackled by beckydawolf (27k): Carol's in space and Jess is alone again. But that's the pattern of her life. The hunt for a missing teenager leads Jess to some new friends, reminds her she still has some old ones and forces her to face a part of her past she'd rather ignore. [A darker take on the pheromones and the trauma + complications of Jessica’s powers. This fic is really good at how it handles it, and I really love how supportive Carol is. Also Anya and Kamala and America and Kate show up and they’re awesome!]

But Tony is just a man. And there’s only so much he can do.

Here’s a hint: it’s shiny, red and gold, and flies. Tony’s had a productive couple of months, but the fact that his grandfather keeps trying to hire bodyguards for his “safety” is really putting a cramp in his ability to keep his secret superhero identity, well, a secret.

Steve Rogers wakes up in 2015 and finds out that he’s missed 70 years (Oh god, does this mean he’s 94?), a revelation that he handles with much less grace than usual. Mostly, Steve just wants to be Captain America again, but on his own terms and without a lot of fanfare. To fill the time while Steve tries to figure out the best way to resurrect a dead superhero, his good friend Isaac Stark offers him a job: bodyguard to Isaac’s grandson, Tony Stark - who seems to get into a surprising amount of trouble for a teenager. “There’s no better introduction to the 21st century than through Tony,” says Isaac. Somehow, Steve is not reassured.

Paved With Good Intentions (I’m on the road to hell) - 194k

When the mysterious group of vigilante assassins known only as ‘The Avengers’ are tipped off about the dirty secrets that lie within Stark Industries, Steve Rogers has his heart set on taking out Tony Stark for good in order to protect the rest of the world from his evil. He’s seen the footage, after all- Stark is a man who fights only for himself. And of course, when a job arises as chief bodyguard for Stark, to protect him from the growing threat of an ominously infatuated stalker, the opportunity is way too good for him to miss out on. It’s the perfect placement, and the perfect way to find out whether or not their tipoff is genuine.

But as Steve falls into rank as the new bodyguard for Mr. Stark and he spends time getting to know and protect him, his initial hatred begins to falter and merge into something different, something far more terrifying than the prospect of killing the face of Stark Industries.

After a Civil War, death, rebirth, a takeover by Osborn, brain deletion, and the fall of Asgard, Steve and Tony might just be starting to get back on solid ground with one another. The US Army has other plans for him, but for now, Steve is slowly learning to live life in the 21st century, and taking classes at Boston College. He's beginning to suspect that there is no escape.

Boston College is on the T's Green Line. MIT is on the Red. The two lines meet at the Park Street Station, and so will Steve and Tony.

      The funeral brings everyone together, past differences set aside. Too little, too late. If the team had never disbanded in the first place, perhaps things might have unfolded differently five years ago. Given that humans tend to do best in times of war and chaos, seem to be quite good at breeding such an environment, too, perhaps not. They seem to view the world in hindsight, fearing those who dared to think ahead. Now the futurist lay dead, his toy heart set afloat and his so called loved ones wept for his death . . . ignorant of their own part in the tragedy. 

      Afterwards, they serve refreshments out in the yard. Steve loosens his tie, his suit jacket slung over one arm, heading towards the drinks table. The past several years have been punishingly dull. He isn’t yet convinced his assignment hasn’t been revenge from the Queen, for a mission gone awry. Though he is one of her best soldiers, and no matter how boring Earth might be, and no matter how ugly this form was, to be tasked with the impersonation of such a high profile Terran figure was to be considered an honour. Thanos wiping out half the life in the universe had put a hold in the Skrulls’ plans as much as it had put a hold on most things in the Universe. However, now that the Earth heroes had undone Thanos’ upheaval, it was time to reinstate their agenda once more. Finally, he has an actual mission brief. 

      He approaches the woman at the table, standing less than a foot beside her to pour himself some coffee from the dispenser. “It shouldn’t have ended this way,” he murmurs, speaking about a lot of things, not just Tony’s passing. He estimates the words are fair, considering Steve and Maria are not supposed to have spoken from even before the Blip, and contain just the right amount of nostalgia to tell Maria that Steve has not forgotten.
