✨ Step-by-step guide to taking screenshots in The Sims 4 📸 (part 2) ✨
READ PART 1
Stage 7: Posing the sims
Now for the most exciting part!
First, it’s very important to teleport all your sims into the same spot – this part is crucial!
You can do this using the familiar Knight Statue method:
1. Place the right number of statues in one spot.
2. Teleport each sim to their own statue.
Alternatively, you can teleport all the sims directly to one sim using MCCC:
Sim commands – Teleport commands – Teleport multiple Sims to this Sim – Teleport worlds Sims to this Sim – Teleport Sim now!
Either way, you’ll end up with a pile of sims literally standing inside each other. If the sims next to each other are supposed to have separate poses, you don’t need to stack them in the same spot, just place them side by side.
Now, let’s move on to actually posing them.
There are two main tools for posing: Andrew's Pose Player and Wicked Whims by Turbodriver.
Wicked Whims
Wicked Whims is much more convenient, but it only works for teens and older, you can’t pose kids or pets with it.
Here’s how to pose using Wicked Whims:
Click on the sim – Wicked – Pose
You’ll either see the last pose pack you used or a list of all installed pose packs. Find the specific pose you want to use.
If you have a large pose collection, we recommend using @twistedmexi’s mod that lets you search poses by name.
Choose the desired pack Select the specific numbered pose from the pack
For multi-sim poses, you’ll see several versions labeled F (female), M (male), T (toddler), etc. Be sure to choose the correct letter for each sim so they snap into place correctly.
If something feels off (like sims floating or clipping), you can reposition them using Wicked Whims’ built-in positioning feature:
Click on the sim – Wicked – Actions – Enable Positioning
This brings up directional arrows you can use to move the sim around, rotate them, raise/lower them.
You can even move sims off-screen if they aren’t needed for a particular shot.
These arrows are also perfect for adjusting height differences, like if one sim looks unnaturally short or tall in a pose.
Absolute must-have feature!
Another great thing about Wicked Whims is that you can change outfits directly after posing, in case you have a last-minute wardrobe change.
Pose Player
Unfortunately, Pose Player isn’t as convenient, but you’ll still need it sometimes.
Drawbacks:
– No handy positioning arrows like WickedWhims
– If you enter Build Mode during a shoot, all poses reset
– Works best when combined with @twistedmexi’s TOOL mod
When to use Pose Player:
– Photoshoots with kids or pets
– Older poses that aren’t compatible with Wicked Whims
After teleporting the sims into position:
Click on the sim – Pose by Pack – Choose pack and pose
Pose Player also works with TwistedMexi’s pose search mod.
Choose the pack – Select the specific numbered pose
For multi-sim poses, pick the correct letter version (F, M, T, etc.) for each sim.
For large group shots, Pose Player can be annoying because it always opens with the full list of all your poses – you have to manually scroll to find the right pack every time. Wicked Whims remembers the last used pack, which speeds things up a lot.
With Pose Player, you can queue up several poses for each sim and switch between them by canceling actions in the action queue (lower left corner).
Pose Player works much better if you use it together with the TOOL mod. This helps offset the lack of positioning arrows.
With TOOL, you can move posed sims (including kids and pets) anywhere you want, and you can move them all at once.
If you need to shift the whole group a little to the right/left or closer to the camera:
Click the sim – TOOL – Active Sim – Hold Alt and drag with the mouse
Sims can move horizontally, vertically, rotate – the whole deal, but TOOL uses coordinates, so it takes a little practice.
Combination of Pose Player and Wicked Whims
Pose the parents with Wicked Whims and the kids/pets with Pose Player. You can even mix poses from different packs: then use Wicked Whims positioning to scoot everyone into place until the composition looks perfect.
This hybrid method gives you endless creative freedom.
A few tips for posing sims:
1. If your sim needs to be sitting in the pose, here’s a little life hack. First, click on a chair (or whatever surface they’ll sit on), select the “Sit” action, then open Wicked Whims’ pose menu and select the pose. Unpause the game, and the sim will sit exactly where you need them.
2. If you’re using a multi-sim pose where two or more sims are sitting or lying down together, the Knight Statue trick works best. Place the exact number of statues directly in the center of the furniture (like a couch or bed). Then teleport the sims to these statues and assign the poses as usual.
3. We already mentioned how important it is to teleport all sims to the exact same spot when using group poses. Here’s what happens if you skip this step :)
4. For a cleaner frame during the photoshoot, it’s logical to remove the plumbob. We explained exactly how to do this in a separate article – check it out if you need help.
Stage 8: Time of day and weather
It would look strange if a student rave happened right in the middle of the day. The time of day and weather should match the story you’re trying to tell.
You can set the exact time using MCCC. Click on the mailbox and choose the desired time. You can do the same for the weather.
MC Cheats – Change world time
MC Cheats – Season cheats – Change weather
Or you can use UI Cheats by weerbesu: this mod allows you to simply click on the time or weather icons in the game’s interface and change them instantly.
And don’t forget: when shooting outdoors, always turn your sims to face the sun (if the time of day allows). This will give you the best lighting and make your screenshots much prettier.
Stage 9: What to use for taking screenshots?
Again, there are several options, it all depends on your goals and the mods you use.
If you have GShade or ReShade enabled, then always take screenshots directly through GShade/ReShade. If you just press "C" in-game, you’ll get a plain screenshot without any of the beautiful filters applied. Obviously, we don’t want that.
And second. If you want not only personal screenshots, but also in-game photos your sims can hang on the wall, gift to someone, or keep as memories, then you’ll have to work with the in-game camera.
In this case, we highly recommend downloading the ISO Love Photo’ camera by @ravasheencc. This camera gives you much better control over framing, and your final photos will never have random gnomes or fingers sticking into the frame. Plus, they’ll always be high quality. Another bonus: unlike the regular in-game camera, this one lets you take up to 25 pictures at once!
After downloading, unzip the archive and place the files into your Mods folder.
Documents – Electronic Arts – The Sims 4 – Mods
In Build Mode, you can place the camera on any surface. You can also use your keyboard to adjust the camera’s height if necessary (9 – up, 0 – down).
Photos taken with this camera will be saved both in the sim’s inventory (the one who took the pictures) and in the game’s regular screenshots folder on your computer.
Some general tips:
1. You don’t have to take pictures only "in the wild", you can build yourself a dedicated photo studio. For this, a professional green screen backdrop will come in handy (for example, check out the one by @helgatisha).
2. One incredibly useful mod for photoshoots is Steady Sit & Seat Any Sim by @amellce. With this mod, sims will stay put until you manually cancel their action.
There’s also a great sit on the floor mod by @mercuryfoam – perfect for casual picnic shots.
3. We already mentioned using clubs to gather sims and control their actions for group shots. This can be improved further by downloading Rex’s expanded club activities mod, which gives you more actions to assign to club gatherings.
4. Another great trick is installing default overrides for group animations. For example, replacing the default dance animations. That way, when all your sims start dancing, they’ll look much cooler and more stylish in the frame.

trying out the thing here that lets you switch editors with cheat engine (which affects the creatures you can drop in)
these values are safe to mess around with, as the game will change the value on its own whenever you open a different editor
-
im in the religious air vehicle editor (1151075343), i switched the editor type to the creature editor (1180455098)
and i dropped in a random creature, which worked but, since this is the material editor, the main skinpaint body is gone. all of the other parts work though, and theyre a bright white color, as opposed to being colored like in the creature edtor
also curiously the creature is very tiny here
you cant interact with any of the limbs or feet or graspers, but you can drag the other parts around. you cant put them back on the skinpaint body though since its gone
surprisingly enough you can color these parts that you can move around too. though they ignore your color settings and stay completely greyscale
if you dont pick any colors, any parts you add on will be using their default placeholder textures. also you can stack some creature parts onto the vehicle parts, but not all of them (ie mouths). i think the only parts that will stack on vehicle parts are the parts that can stack on other parts in the creature editor at all
-
then i switched the editor type to the city hall (2582195973)
if the vehicles were already huge compared to creatures, the buildings are even more huge compared to vehicles. i know i called it Absurdly Tall Hall but this is a bit much
its also realy easy to cap out the complexity meter, and the dna will run out but thats easy to circumvent
the building editor and vehicle editor parts interact pretty nicely, since theyre both material editors
-
i ended up switching to the house editor so lets load other creations into it
i changed the editor type to ufos (2528264583). as expected, ufos are pretty tiny in the building editor
the body parts can be dragged around like bodies and roofs (though their movement will be weird if theyre rotated to be upside down for example), the detail parts also attach to things as expected
i also switched the editor to religious land (2597835946) just to be able to do this
-
even the biggest creatures are absolutely microscopic in the building edior. its so interesting i wouldnt have expected these differences in scale to be like that, id expect them all to be the same scale
curiously enough, this specific creature is not largely positioned below the dais as it is normally (since its position is normally dependent on its feet, the legs are weird in bot parts and might so cause this to happen)
and heres like the tiniest creature
unlike the vehicle parts, all of the parts here are treated as detail parts that have to attatch to something, and cant float around on their own in space unless you use shift or ctrl. you also still cant touch the limbs or feet/graspers
-
lets do something fun. i booted the cell editor and switched the value to the creature editor again
it displays completely top down, but the creature stands on the floor and plays its usual idle animations and sounds (as it thinks its in the creature editor). the only model capability that displays here across editors is sight (it plays the creature editors sight animation AND the cell editors sound)
even the early creature parts arent compatible with the cell editor
creatures also still use the creature vertebrae rather than the cell vertebrae parts. if you pull on it (you cant also change the length of the vertebrae or their position, but you can still scale it) some limbs might turn red but they dont get deleted until you move another part
parts have no restrictions on where you can put them and still even retain their rotation and morph handles
also the bodies are weird. i guess this might be because of it using the creature vertebrae instead of cell vertebrae? but you can put all the parts on the bodies vertically, not just the eyes, and parts dont seem to merge into one part in the middle of the symmetry
-
lets try the opposite, opening a cell (value 489603236) in the creature editor
the game treats it as mouthless, and sight remains the only cross compatible model capability (curiously it plays the cell sound for it anyway). it also only plays cell idle animations
you can enter the test drive with no issues
and then if you go back the camera resets to be top down, as in the cell editor. it wont let you zoom in too close either way
i had to swtich the editor value to the creature editor and back to the cell editor just to reset the camera, and loaded another cell. it says carnivore but this is just because of the carnivore creature mouth i had here prior, the value just doesnt get updated
no matter how much other parts you put on the cell, the verbs dont appear in the top right. it does animate remarkably well when you add and remove parts though, and it stands on the floor as expected while idling
also you can still place the cell parts vertically for some reason (even if the editor is viewed top down), but theyll replace some other adjacent parts this time
look at this beaut that i cant save
-
switched the edetor type to city hall again. as you can see, these are absurdly huge, and none of the textures display properly
if you click on any of the building editor part, itll instantly get sold. you can just get left with a completely empty edtor, no creature, no body parts. if you then hit test drive (i had to try it) the game, as expected, just crashes
-
i switch it into the ufo editor. its much more nicely sized. you can stack all creature parts onto the ufo parts, but they wont animate (even if you place parts)
even if you then switch back to the creature editor value, none of the animations will work still, probably since theres no skinpaint body to be found at all. im not doing it again this time but im totally expecting the game to crash if i hit test drive again
also i switched the editor value to religious air and hit new creation, but it just keeps generating the normal creature editor bodies even though it didnt change the editor type back to the creature editor anyway. the creature idles still work, placing animations will work, only the verbs are weird

I'm sure you get lots of questions abt it, but where do you even start when it comes to character modelling? I've tried a couple times and can't get any of the shapes I want.. especially not these much larger body shapes. How do you do that?
I started with Minecraft skins. Switched to Blockbench, made my sona immediately, used that for less than a month. Instead of going head first into Blender I spent a few months building up to my sona again in December 2023. Did my best and then moved onto new characters. Artfight in July 2024, I made 17 heads, and burned out halfway through. I was sick and tired, I wanted to make BODIES and for them to look GREAT Instead of just going with what's in my head, I found plus size models and artists I liked, I used references, I used my own body. I made test bodies that were to be changed and tweaked for a month until I was satisfied with the result. This spawned Nia and Roxanne 3.0 in August. Hips, bellies, boobs, asses, they jut out, they are weight, they sag. Legs need space between them. These were details I tried to beat a subdivided cube into. But you need more than that. I always start from scratch, with a mirror modifier. I scale and extrude from a cube to the rough outline of my reference. For wider hips I extrude the sides of the lower half, move vertices in shape. This gives me space to extrude something for the pubic area. To big bellies and butts I extrude and then by each vertex I round them off. For boobs, I prefer to merge roundcubes to the chest. Alot of it is playing around with the exact shape until you like it, or it fits the reference. Finally, I do baked in lighting and shading on my texture, which really carries it to the end. When I started on Sybil last December, it took me 4 tries from scratch to get her body right. Each time I looked for more references for help. Until I distilled the pancake/fat fold into as simple a shape as possible and added stripes to her texture where they were needed. There is alot of overlap in her mesh, I think it's inevitable when you're trying to do this sort of thing, otherwise stuff looks like it's floating, or weirdly avoiding contact. This might be too long, but I hope it helps 💖 Also if you are doing low poly check out Voxid's tutorials just a solid guide to help you on all aspects of the process.

Breath of Fire IV now available via GOG - Gematsu
GOG and Capcom have released the PC version of Breath of Fire IV via GOG for $9.99, the companies announced.
Breath of Fire IV first launched for PlayStation on April 27, 2000, followed by PC on May 30, 2003.
Here is an overview of the game, via GOG:
Story
In a far-away world, two continents float, separated by a vast swamp-land. For eons, no contact existed between the two continents because ships couldn’t sail across the expanse. At last, when the historic first contact was made between the two powers, war erupted! After long and costly fighting between the Fou Empire in the west and an alliance of countries in the east, both sides exhausted all their strength and resources. With no other alternative, the two powers agreed to an armistice. One year later, Princess Elena vanished. She had been traveling in the east from town to town, exploring battlegrounds and visiting war veterans. Her trail vanished in a small town near the front line. Nobody knew her whereabouts! The Eastern Alliance wanted to avoid sending a large army to the front. Such a move would be a political blunder, breaking the armistice and stirring up hostilities. It became impossible to carry out a large-scale search for Elena. Time passed… with no sign of the princess. Elena’s sister, Princess Nina, finally makes up her mind. She leaves on a journey in search of her sister—by herself.
Characters
Ryu – Ryu meets Nina while he is lying unconscious on a street in a desert town in the eastern continent. His race and native land are unknown. Ryu has a Dragon’s Eye, which empowers him with the amazing abilities to transform into a dragon and summon dragons.
Nina – The princess of Wyndia, a town of the Fae tribe (winged folk). Nina meets Ryu on her journey to seek her lost sister Elena. Though somewhat naïve, Nina is skilled in Healing magic.
Scias – A mercenary soldier, Scias was hired by the eastern side during the war. Scias becomes the party’s watcher. He is very quiet and aloof from the world. Scias can perform a powerful double attack with his sword.
Cray – A young leader of the Woren tribe (cat people) in the eastern alliance, Cray joins Nina to search for Princess Elena, his childhood friend. He has a strong sense of responsibility and acts as the leader of the party. His high offensive and defensive abilities are very dependable.
Ershin – Ershin wears completely sealed armor to protect her from any kind of curse. Since she wears the armor all the time, no one knows her real face or background. She meets the party in a mysterious place polluted by a curse and decides to join them.
Ursula – Ursula is a middle-class leader of the Fou Empire. She came to the eastern continent in search of dragons, and meets up with Ryu and his companions. Ursula was brought up in the military, and knows very little about worldly concerns. She is excellent at attacking with both magic and weapons.
Fou-Lu – Fou-lu unified the western continent single-handedly with his paranormal powers. He became the first emperor of the Fou Empire several hundred years ago. Despite his youthful look, he has mystic dignity. It is said that he predicted his own resurrection as he passed away.
Improvements
Here’s how we ensured that this masterpiece is better than ever and what you can expect with GOG’s version of the game:
Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11
Both two localizations of the game included (English and Japanese)
Improved DirectX game renderer
New rendering options (windowed mode, vertical synchronization control, gamma correction, integer scaling, anti-aliasing, and more)
Improved audio engine (restored missing environmental sounds and audio configuration)
Improved keyboard and mouse support
Improved Warehouse and Crane minigames
Improved F9 exit screen
Issue-free battle and combo system (all crashes have been fixed)

Let’s go back in time to the PlayStation 1 era and reminisce about how Breath of Fire IV was presented to gamers back in 2000: After centuries of war, the two lands bordering an impenetrable swampland have finally reached an armistice. Mysteriously, the noble Princess Elena disappears somewhere near the war-ravaged front lines. Distraught, her sister Nina goes in search of the Princess alone and on her journey, meets a mysterious young warrior named Ryu. Their destinies soon entwine. The next chapter in the epic tale of magic and mystery now unfolds. The fate of what lies ahead rests in your control.

The First Tournament of Neo-Teyvat
The Clash of Star and Sun
In the fiery nation of war that has now achieved peace, the audience from across Neo-Teyvat and from other worlds has gathered to witness the first-ever tournament of the new era.
"Ladies and gentlemen! Also, those in between and those that aren't. We're about to witness the first match of the Neo-Teyvat Fighting Tournament! Are we ready, everyone?"
And the crowd cheered, excited for this particular match.
"For our fighters in this match, I bet you have already known one of them for a long while. She has traveled across Teyvat and achieved many titles. Mondstadt's Honorary Knight of Favonius, The Hero of All Nations, Watatsumi Island's Swordfish II Captain, the one with the Ancient Name 'Tumaini'... oh boy, the list goes on!
Finally, we will see her fight on stage. Now, let's give it up for... Maya the Traveler!"
-----
At the side of the stage...

"Ooooh! Sounds like everyone is excited to see you there, Maya. Don't worry. Paimon will also cheer for you," the floating faerie reassured as she gave her partner a thumbs up.

"Thanks, Paimon. Though I gotta say it's kinda odd that they didn't tell us who I'll be fighting first. I guess I'll find that out when I step in there." Either way, Maya returned the same gesture to Paimon as she walked onto the stage, hearing the audience cheering for her and shouting her name.
-----
Back to the stage...

"Here she is! One of our heroes! This is getting heat from the crowd already.
Speaking of heat, looks like our Traveler's opponent is also an Outworlder. What are the odds? Among those who came to save us from the Grimm, many have seen him slay his foes with his burning blade. Oh, that's as hot as the sun, too!
Now, prepare for this match to be set ablaze! Here's Kamado Tanjiro!"
"Wait, what?!" It sounds like Maya knew that person, which was confirmed when her opponent showed up.

"H-Hello, Miss Maya. To be honest, I am also surprised I'll be fighting you here."
"I'm more surprised that you're here as a fighter." She was tempted to ask the reason, but she thought it'd be better to ask that later, after the match.

"Looks like our fighters are already acquainted. Are we ready now?"

"I'm ready. I hope you don't mind, Miss Maya."

"It's not like we're gonna kill each other here anyway. Whoever loses will treat the winner later."
Both of them raised their swords as they prepared themselves for the match to start.

"Ohoho! I can feel their fighting spirits already! Which of our Outwolders will win? We shall find out here.
Now, let the battle... BEGIN!"
[BGM: Game Changer · Ikoliks]
As the fight started, Maya rushed to the side and used the power of Geo as she slammed her palm on the ground, creating a wall of Geo shards that trailed their way towards her opponent.

"...!" When the Traveler made her first move, the Sun Breather took a few steps back as he took a deep breath to execute a counterattack.
"Hinokami Kagura... Enbu!" As his sword was engulfed in flames, he performed multiple vertical slashes at the Geo shards erected from the ground.
As he was about to reach Maya, she was no longer in that same spot. Tracking her scent, she was... above him!
"Hy-dropping in!" Switching her element to Hydro, the Traveler threw a couple of bombs of the same element, which would normally inflict great damage when they exploded upon contact. The follow-up attack was so fast, it didn't give Tanjiro enough time to evade them.
"Hinokami Kagura: Retsujitsu Kōkyō!" In his immediate reaction, he attempted to parry those Hydro bombs with 2 consecutive slashes. With his blade in flames, the bombs evaporated within seconds as they nearly exploded.

Landing on the ground with both feet and a hand, Maya rushes towards him. As she got close enough, she went on executing 2 sword slashes.

Before either of them could land a hit on him, Tanjiro stepped back, avoiding the first swing. The second swing was blocked by his sword.
"Holy Valberries! The Traveler is on full offense! Yet looks like our young samurai also keeps his flames up. Oh boy! He might even compete with the Pyro Archon with that kind of heat.
Will his burning blade lead him to victory? Or will he be beaten by the Traveler's multiple elements?"

[Blender to MMD] A MW idiot's journey PT2
Hi there, everyone! On the previous post I narrated a bit of my journey trying to import the Mouthwashing characters to MMD by using Blender.
Well, I had to put a pause to that first because I don't know what I'm doing wrong that the rest of the characters had the same black model glitch as Jimmy did. The thing is, I don't remember how I even fixed it the previous time, I just pressed buttons and options until I got it right so... I'll have to figure that out that later as well.
In the meantime, some of you may be aware that at the beginning of the month I commissioned someone to make a model of my boy, Derek. Because horrible fictional characters deserve to be together. Well, after a month... the commission wasn't what I expected. Not to mention I couldn't even open the file on Blender, it crashed my whole computer (Basically, some compatiblity issues due to the version of our Blender programs) and the only way to use it again was re-starting it from the power switch button. (No biggie, we talked it out and we're in good terms)
So I went and grabbed a Daisuke model and begin to play with the vertices, the textures and we're somewhere...
I can't believe I've managed this much in just two days The hair is going to be the worst, I still have to do the texture and you can tell I fucked up the vertices, not sure how I'll make, attach and incorporate the sleeves of the jumpsuit on his waist, besides making sure it gets attached to the model and isn't just floating once exported to MMD.
Still a long way ahead of me, besides me adding some strokes to calculate where the mapping translates so I won't draw in vain lol. But I'm a stubborn girl, I have plenty of time to work on this while I do some art commissions. I'm still a bit sad, as I originally wanted to render something silly/fun for Valentine's Day, but I guess it'll have to wait~
I'm not planning to do model commissions, as I'm pretty amateurish at this as you can tell, and by no means I would like people to feel disappointed like I felt lol.
Anyway, have a nice day!

Let Them Burn
Promare fic, Leo/Galo, Leo centric, human experimentation, amnesia
Chapter 1: Ignition
Darkness.
Warmth.
Weightlessness.
That’s all I can remember of the time before I woke up.
After that, I first became aware of the cool, pure oxygen that filled my lungs.
Next, something tight and bulky encased the lower half of my face. It snugly wrapped around the back of my neck, seemingly holding my head in place while the rest of my body floated in the unknown.
There was no discernible difference in temperature between my body and my environment, so if it weren’t for the tingling sensation that gradually buzzed to life in the tips of my fingers and toes, I would not have known where my body ended and my environment began.
I gradually understood another thing as my eyes blinked open. The weightlessness I felt was due to my being suspended in an enigmatic fluid that was neither thin like water nor thick like a gel, but somewhere in between. It glowed a brilliant turquoise color, illuminated by a ring of light from above. A large tube extending from the top of the vertical cylindrical glass tank surrounding me connected down to the breathing mask strapped to my face.
The tingling sensation made its way up my arms and legs. It spread across my back and torso and poured into my face and scalp. My eyes rolled into the back of my head, and my eyelids fluttered involuntarily. My fingers twitched at my side from an electrical pulse ricocheting through my nerves. The odd tingling seeped deeper into my limbs, becoming uncomfortable like radio static. I forced my eyes open again and peered down at my body through heavy-lidded eyes.
Strands of pale, mint-green hair floated around the corners of my vision, and I was naked from the neck down. Small white squares were attached to different parts of my body, each connected to thin, white wires that ran up to the tank lid. Several thin, clear tubes were taped to my forearms. I could see the tips of catheters disappearing underneath my skin, and I immediately felt nauseated. There was one on my chest as well, with two tubes connected to one catheter. My thin, pale frame looked alien to me. To boot, two crescent-shaped scars under each of my pectorals caught my attention, and I realized I didn’t have nipples. I blinked a few times, thinking I was still delirious, but they seriously weren’t there. I had no idea why, and I suddenly felt vulnerable and exposed as a tightening panic crept into my chest. Questions I had no answer for flooded my mind.
Where was I?
Who was I?
What was happening to me?
I attempted to move, but my body didn’t respond, as if I were paralyzed. My fingers periodically twitched involuntarily, so my body was responding to something. But I wasn’t in control. All I could do was bear through my discomfort. I tried to find the source of my torment, straining my eyes to perceive my surroundings.
Everything outside the tank was dark, except for the occasional flickering of LEDs on various machines, casting intermittent glows. One prominent bright bluish-white glow caught my attention. With a sudden surge of adrenaline, I met the gaze of a solitary figure standing behind a bulky chunk of metal with various knobs, switches, and blinking lights on its surface.
She had fair skin and dark brown hair cut bluntly at her shoulders. She stared at me intensely from behind her safety glasses. She wore a white lab coat and a maroon turtleneck. In one hand, she held a tablet, the source of the glow, which cast an ominous shadow across her face. Her other hand rested on a dial that she slightly turned to the right.
I was curious at first, but when I figured out that her tinkering with the panel of dials and switches affected me, dread weighed heavily on my gut. As she turned the dial, the static sensation within me ramped up, turning into a jittery scramble of sharp, shooting pains and dull, beating throbs that sporadically ebbed and flowed through my muscles. I tried to let out a cry in protest, but the mask muffled my voice. Only tiny bubbles of air slipped through its tight seal, floating to the top of the tank, carried away by freedom I didn’t have.
She paused to write something on her tablet before flicking a few switches and turning another dial. Then, a clear liquid and a black liquid slid down the two tubes connected to my chest. My heart pounded quickly, and I instinctively held my breath. I couldn’t do anything to stop them from invading my body. I was utterly defenseless. The liquids reached the catheter, and I braced for the inevitable.
A nauseating pressure flooded my bloodstream. Warmth blossomed in my chest as the liquid slowly branched out, making me keenly aware of every vein in my body. I exhaled the breath I was holding. It wasn’t a terrible sensation. It was actually somewhat relaxing. I looked back at the woman, feeling a little woozy. She stared at me, waiting with a hand slowly cranking the dial.
The warmth in my veins grew warmer. At first, I felt I was having a hot flash. The liquid I was submerged in was cooler in comparison to my body. It was soothing, but the heat only compounded. Soon, my blood was boiling. I realized quickly that as the woman cranked the dial to the right, the heat only got worse. My skin burned like my body was being raked over hot coals. My muscles fired sporadically as if zapped by waves of electricity. I looked back at the woman, and as my anguish became more and more apparent, a smile crept across her face. A pleased smile. A smile filled with anticipation.
The smile of a sadist.
Despite my lack of memory, my instincts told me that much. I realized rather quickly that
One: I was in danger, and two: this woman was the reason I was in danger.
She continued turning the dial to the right, and my whole body tensed up as I felt my heart catch fire. I was burning from the inside out, and there was nothing I could do but endure it. I cried, but my tears were indistinguishable from the fluid surrounding me.
I managed a glimpse down at my body, and astonishment overcame me as flickering neon green and pink flames spread out from my chest across my skin in an ethereal spectacle. They engulfed my arms and legs and delicately danced at the tips of my hair. I waited for my skin to blister and peel away, but despite feeling as if my body was covered in third-degree burns, to my surprise, my body remained intact.
As I inhaled, a tinge of sulfur tainted the air, triggering a fit of coughing. It felt like my lungs were filled with smoke, even though there was no smoke in the breathing tube. Bubbles escaped my mask again, but the lady in the lab coat only turned the dial further.
Desperation filled my gaze, hoping that my eyes would convey the depths of my suffering to her. I yearned for a glimmer of mercy, a shred of empathy that would give her hesitation to push me further. Yet, all I witnessed was her cranking the dial further with that vile, twisted smile etched onto her face.
The pain surged to unbearable levels, tormenting every fiber of my being. I screamed in despair as the flames engulfed my body, but the mask muffled any noise I made. My hands clenched into trembling fists. They were all I could manage to move, of my own volition. With each agonizing moment, I wondered how much further the dial could be turned, dreading the unimaginable depths of suffering that awaited me.
Surely this would kill me, right? Surely there would come an end to my suffering. I didn’t want to die. But it was inevitable at this point, right? To think that I could emerge from this torture unscathed was a delusion. And to imagine, if I did survive, that I would not be permanently disabled in some atrocious way would also be absurd.
My primal instincts surged forth, propelling me into a desperate struggle for survival against the engulfing flames. With every ounce of strength, I pushed against the searing heat. In my mind’s eye, I conjured an image of the surrounding liquid quenching the fiery tendrils that consumed my body. The flames died down substantially, but just as I thought I could control them, the woman cranked up the dial, and the flames erupted in a vibrant blaze. The harder I fought to snuff them out, the worse the pain became.
A strenuous pressure gripped my bones, crushing them under an intangible weight. I groaned in pain silently as the flames swirled around me. The woman finally lifted her hand from the dial to write down a note on her tablet. I thought maybe this was the end. This was as far as the dial could turn. But it wasn’t. As she placed her hand back on the dial, my despair melted away and, in its place, rose the flames of rage.
I cursed the woman in my mind and attempted yet again to gain some control over my body. The harder I struggled against the electric force that held me still, the more painful the movement became. It felt like thousands of sharp needles were piercing me from the inside out, and as I moved, they cut through my skin and muscles. But there were no traces of injury, and I finally managed to clench and unclench my hands.
Through sheer willpower and perhaps my body dissociating from the pain, I demanded the flame’s obedience, and they responded in kind. I applied the same effort to my arms and legs, and after a few moments of adrenaline-fueled concentration, my joints bent to my will. I forced my spine to do the same, curling in on myself until I was a tight ball. My body shivered, the fluid around me now at a freezing temperature in contrast to my body.
I tried again to control the flames. This time, I thought about what the flames could do for me rather than trying to put them out. If it was a fiery blaze the woman wanted, then it was a fiery blaze she was going to get. As she cranked the dial as far as it would go, I stretched out my body and let out a painful, rageful scream. When the flames fully engulfed the tank, the woman stretched out her arms and let out a shrill cackle. I glared at her as she frantically scribbled down her notes with a wide, arrogant smile. While she wrote, I noticed the edges of my mask were melting.
I wondered whether I could escape using these flames. Maybe if they grew hot enough, the glass would shatter. Chilling, turquoise fluid slowly trickled into my melting mask, and I realized I didn’t have much time to attempt an escape before I either drowned or the woman realized something was going wrong.
I focused on intensifying the heat of my flames even further. They expanded, pushing up against the walls of the tank as their green and purple colors grew brighter. I could tell that it was working because my mask melted faster. Liquid poured in up to my chin. I stretched out my arms in front of me and pressed up against the glass. I focused my willpower on the palms of my hands. I imagined the glass breaking in my mind as I felt small cracks forming under my palms.
The woman looked up from her notes and realized what I was trying to do. She ran over to another set of machines and started pressing buttons frantically. An electric shock sparked around my neck, making my head jerk to the side. The oxygen I breathed smelled different. There wasn’t any particular fragrance I could identify, but I tasted sweetness on my tongue. A gentle wave of calmness spread from within as all the burning pain slowly faded into numbness. My flames died down a little, and my arms started to slip. I realized in a panic that she was forcing me back asleep.
I held my breath.
I couldn’t go back to sleep. I wouldn’t. I was getting out of here one way or another. I fought against the pulsing electricity that was trying to force my arms down to my sides and closed my eyes. I didn’t care what the woman was doing. It didn’t matter. What mattered was keeping that strong image of the glass shattering in mind. My flames returned to their former intensity, along with the burning pain and the fuel of my wrath; they continued to flourish.
The cracks under my palms splintered further, extending out like spiderwebs across the surface. A defining alarm blared to life. I opened my eyes in distress. The room was illuminated by a red, blinking light emitting from an emergency beacon. The woman, panic-stricken, yelled into a communicator of some kind, but I couldn’t make out anything she was saying.
I closed my eyes again. My lungs yearned to breathe. My mask filled halfway with fluid as the right side melted away. The intense electricity around my neck vanished, and I broke free of the mask. The tiny white squares shrunk and withered off my skin, and with them, the last of the electricity running through my body disappeared. I could finally relax my aching muscles. My flames grew brighter and hotter. I screamed out my last breath in desperation, pushing past my limits as much as I could.
The tank shattered into a million pieces.
I spilled out onto the floor with all the liquid and gasped for air.
“No!” The woman screamed in frustration.
I staggered to my knees and then to my feet, my body still ablaze. The woman and I made eye contact. She was no longer smiling, but I was. I balled my hands into fists, thinking of all the ways I could make her feel the pain I felt. She backed away from me as I ran at her screaming in a blind, primal fury.
She pulled out a gun from her belt pocket desperately, as if she had just remembered having it. But before she could fire it, I drew my hands close together and imagined stabbing her with something long and sharp. My flames erupted into a fiery spear, closing the distance between us and puncturing her right shoulder. She cried out in pain and fell to the ground with me on top of her. My flames spread out across her shoulder and ate away at the fabric of her clothes.
“Shit. Shit. Shit!” She cursed as she patted at her coat.
With a grimace, she decided to ignore the small fire and attempted to shoot me again. My spear withdrew from her shoulder back into my fist and formed a sharp blade along the side of my left arm. My flames sliced through her right wrist like a sword, and her severed hand tumbled to the floor, along with the gun that slipped out of her limp fingers and spun away across the floor. Where her hand was cut, her skin was cauterized. She screamed again; this time, it was shrill and desperate. She looked back and forth between her severed hand and the flames devouring her clothes. Tears dripped down her face, and she desperately patted at the flames with both her other hand and her severed arm. I watched, straddling her hips. Her pleading eyes gazed at me in grief as she sputtered apology after apology.
But her call for mercy fell on deaf ears.
I grabbed hold of both of her wrists, and my flames devoured her body hungrily. She screamed and thrashed under me. I kept her pinned down with all the strength I could muster. I gripped her wrists so tightly that my fingernails punctured her skin as she jerked them around trying to get away. I watched her writhe and scream in agony with a stone-cold expression. Her skin reddened and sizzled. Little blisters formed all over. Her skin peeled, exposing underlying tissue. The synthetic material of her clothes melted and fused to her flesh.
None of it affected me physically. The melting fabric and the charred skin slid off my body like water on a hydrophobic surface. I kept raising the temperature of my flames just like she kept turning the dial. She coughed and choked on smoke, no longer able to scream. Her skin shriveled up and turned black as the liquids in her body boiled and evaporated. I watched her whole body go through the process of cremation and didn’t let go until she was nothing more than a charred carcass.
The visuals were nasty, but I was too numb, dissociated, and vengeful to register the full extent of the gruesomeness. The acrid and pungent smell was what finally got to me. I let go of her roasted corpse and stood up, coughing smoke out of my lungs. My flames died out, and all I was left with was fatigue, dizziness, and nausea.
I leaned against a nearby wall and keeled over, dry heaving. There was nothing in my gut to expel except bile that burned my esophagus and tasted awful. I looked around the room, trying to decide what to do next. Nothing else caught fire. A door was to my left, and I was still naked. I looked over at the woman. Her clothes were all but ash now.
Leaving this wretched place was more important than clothes. I’d just steal them from the next person I encountered. I double-checked that I could still harness those odd flames by imagining a small fire in my palm. The green and pink flames ignited, forming a small ball. I extinguished it, squeezing my hand into an optimistic fist. I could do this. I’ll burn anything or anyone that gets in my way. The sound of several running feet grew louder beyond the door. I covered my fists in fire, bracing myself for the next fight as the door slid open.

Just Got Back From The Discomfort - Brave Little Abacus arrangement, gesture and formal structure analysis
For the music peeps
Definitions
gesture- a musical strand shorter than a melody. a motif, or a repetitive musical figure
formal structure - a large element of a song. the sequence of sections in a song
arrangement - a large element of a song. the vertical stacking of different frequencies at any given point in a song
texture - a length of time in music where each sound in its arrangement is doing a particular gesture. a texture can be long enough to form an entire section of a song or be a short musical molecule that is as memorable and reference-able as a gesture. vamping can mean eleborating (usually with gestures) within a musical section with one texture
—
I drew up a form diagram for each track off the album:

Note that the drawings are not to scale with some of their song lengths. Each section has a relatively homogenous arrangement within itself. Some bunches of sections are grouped under a larger section arc. These larger arcs always denote similar-in-intensity passages of a song. Arrows denote two sections with similar intensity next to each other (but between track 4 and 5 there is literally only the switching of the track going on which is why i labeled their arrow “continued”). “Arrangement Rises” blocks show sections that develop in intensity-level by piling instruments atop each other in layers or by growing in volume (sometimes non-linearly). Capital letters denote identical sections (these may not be exactly the same in their development or details but the arrangement and melodic/harmonic content of like-lettered sections are mostly the same to the ear.
On to the specifics of what Adam did so well with formal structure and arrangement, aside from all aspects of the album having a great balance of repetition and variation.
A thing immediately obvious from the form diagrams is the formal recurrence of “drone” sections which end tracks. What’s not apparent is what the “calm” sections entail: they pretty frequently are made up of a repetitive instrument padding or bed underneath instrument gestures. The gestures or melodies float over their section’s chord changes by staying in-rhythm but offset when compared to instances of themselves in the section.
Other macro-trends include multi-section arcs which end with brass being added to their arrangement as a final layer which adds intensity, noise of some sort that starts off tracks in their first few seconds and sections like the 5th on track 1 labeled “Piano and Guitar” which consist of a pad with punctuating instruments on top that create a semi-pointillistic texture.
Hopefully this brief analysis will help yall start to find more strands within this cool album that go beyond the obvious (rhythm, melody, tone) and therefore examine how complex the often-overlooked elements of formal structure and arrangement can take your songs into novel/experimental territory! <3
As this analysis stands it could use help from friends teasing out examples which flesh out the many arrangement and form details which span multiple sections, both in-track and across tracks!! To Be Continued!!

Knitting vent from the other night, being resolved:
Left pic (frogged entire thing, pointing for my own notes reference ignore that), DK-weight yarn ribbing in US 4, main work in US 6. Did not feel like an appropriate appearance, imo. I measured the gauge when I was taking pics, and there's no way this was a gauge issue, seeing as how the ribbing is flaring out like a skirt at the bottom. Either way, those size needles were not it. (Using 10 fucking DPNs on the body was a nightmare - I don't have interchangeable tips in US 6.)
Right pic, redoing the ribbing in US 2 (did twice the amount of rounds as the first project but it's only 1/4" longer than the first pic ribbing), just switched to US 4 for the main work. Already feeling a lot more confident with this. The only struggle I'm mentally trying to calculate is if I will have enough yarn length to be using this size of needles. Surely 2 sizes can't make that much of a length difference when this remake is 16 stitches smaller around? I'm going off a smaller stitch number size in the pattern, after testing how small I could go with the new smaller needles cast-on to fit me. TBH, it's more like, I just humoured the complete pattern to figure out construction for this remake, bc I already know multiple things I have to edit - that blank spot in the top edge ribbing is absolutely on my list of edits. I don't understand why the author didn't rib those 5-ish stitches like 8 rounds earlier (the length of the top ribbing).
But yeah, so this is where I'm at with that rant the other night (why does it always take me days to do ribbing lmao). I did use the mini cable (the one I have is LONG) for the ribbing to do magic loop again but more easily (mini is more bendable). I still don't like doing the loop, but once I moved it onto the US 4 tips, I was able to fit my perfectly round small cable with no loop needed. THANKFULLY. This means knitting the body will go really quickly for me next time I pick this up, since I won't need to readjust the loop like 2-3x per round, AND I won't be struggling to manage 8-10 DPNs splitting yarn loops in my work as I go around it. DPNs are great for socks. I love DPNs. Don't get me wrong. It was just miserable to use fucking 8 around a 'large' project.
Side note: I say 8-10, but there were 8 DPNs holding around the work, and one free needle to work with, and one extra. It was 2 sets of 5 from 2 different brands and 2 different wood types (I didn't realize I bought the same size twice - I removed the wrong size from my cart when I ordered them), so I was juggling needles to spread whatever circumference variance there was between the two types, across the whole work at random to scatter any visible effect that may have given the work if I kept them grouped together. That's a laughable endeavor, to be concerned about a hair's width of difference, when the project was fucked from the get-go. (I'm still suffering the repercussions of locking colourwork floats on the same vertical stitches for an entire different project - one which I still haven't finished lol. So that's why trying to achieve a scattered line neutrality seemed important. Obviously using DPNs at all already gave me vertical 'lines' to contend with anyway - from where the needle facets changed.)
Oh one more side note: I just looked at the yarn label and US 6 is the recommended needle size. Why?? Those felt so big and janky when I was knitting it!! The 4 feels and looks right to me for this yarn size. Like sure, the 6 was nice in my hands, SO nice, easy to hold and move. (First time using those DPNs, too, ugh.) But for this yarn? No. Maybe I'm just used to knitting on size 2 for socks. I gotta try DK socks at some point, but I still don't think I would use the size 6 with DK!! (Why, oh, why did I buy 2 sets of a size for which I cannot find a need??) ((Maybe for worsted socks... might wind up as boots, but it would feel more appropriate with worsted. I don't know what else to use size 6 of DPNs for, like, it's such an awkward size and ofc that's the size where I accidentally acquired 2 sets! Actually, to make it worse, I thrifted a set of unlabeled 6.5 DPNs, too. [You KNOW I was so relieved when they were 6.5 and not 6 when I fitted them after getting home.] But I use one of those for my provisional cast on for socks on size 2, so it's all good for the 6.5s. Only technically need one, but they've earned their keep.))

Oh, you're giving me charte blanche? :P
Very well then.
I understand why the fandom hails Amy as being am asweome powerhouse, but I wish they didn't forget that she used to primarily be an acrobat.
In SA1, she's slow, but her most useful move is the Hammer Jump: after gaining speed, she can slam the hammer on the ground to jump high and even go faster. Her hammer does grant her strength, as shown by the way she gains access to Hot Shelter (pressing a switch that only she and Big can move), but primarily, it aids her movement.
Advance 1 gave her a complete moveset based on the hammer, and in the hands of an expert player, she's anything but slow. Look at her: she may not be fast, but she's nimble.
youtube
Heroes gave her the Propeller Hammer, which allows her to float by spinning in the air.
And '06 gave her the ability to double jump, and incidentally, the physics are so that it's more about the vertical movement than the horizontal one.
Say what you want about Boom, but it's not a coincidence that Boom Amy is the acrobat of the four, with her special abilities being a triple jump and balancing beams. Being agile is Amy's thing.
(I'm not counting Advance 2 because everyone has to go fast in that game, nor am I counting Advance 3 because Amy's moveset radically changes depending on her partner)
Does this mean she's weak? No, the Hammer is a formidable weapon, and she did train in boxercise in Battle. But she's not Pink Knuckles.
Which makes this page of IDW #58 a waste of a nice moment and a misunderstanding of the character:

Aside from the fact that the Egg Hammer's hammer should not make a "piko" sound, because that's the sound of the toy hammer squeaking... c'mon. You have Silver and Amy engage in that good ol' Superpower of Teamwork™. Amy gets some help from Silver in lifting that absolute unit. It's cool, it's cute to see them interact like this, a very Sonic moment :)
... but they just had to have Silver and Sonic fawn over Amy and Amy only, because she's so awesome that she can lift almost on her own that giant thing. Then why bother to have them cooperate if they felt the need to remark that Amy alone is Super Duper Cool? So Cool that the guy who can STOP A METEOR THROWN AT HIM BY A DEMIGOD can only stare slackjawed at her feats?
And yeah, as I said. Amy is not this strong. This is something Knuckles would do, because Knuckles' whole deal is that he's super strong and can shatter mountains. While Amy has indoubtedly grown stronger through the series, she's not the second Power character of the group. Technically, she shouldn't even be Speed, but that's where she's most often put because that's the closest thing to Agility the series has. She's agile.
#sonic the hedgehog#amy rose#will i get hate for this? who knows#but this is the best i can articulate my feelings#again: i understand why fans want her to be a strong girl#i like girls with super strength too and i wish they were more popular#but eh i said enough i think

[ID: As the opening synthy beat of the song "Time For Crime" by Orion plays, we see a close-up of a small, yellow, human character [Winnie, per the artist's text] with her hands pressed to her head, a streak of blood across her face and her large round glasses cracked. She blinks and drops her hands to the floor she kneels on, looking up. A sequence of pulled back shots show a crumbling room, a hook sticking out of a pile of rubble and dripping blood, a severed dragon head, and splashes of blood up the walls. Winnie rubs at her glasses and stands. Her color switches to blue to show the past, pulling back to show her walking in a hall, approaching the room with her adventuring party.
The other five figures [names from the artists' text] are arrayed around the girl, who is central and smallest. The camera view hops from the right to the left before ending on the character walking directly behind the girl -- Socrates, an anthropomorphic bird wizard holds up a finger, a flame floating above it. Armando, a stout, bristly-bearded anthropomorphic hedgehog(?) artificer figure grins a gap-toothed smile and tosses a round bomb in one hand. Two characters (a rogue, Theodora, and a ranger, Ralphine, who are also an anthropomorphic cat and wolf, respectively) glance at each other, then away, both blushing. Finally, we see the huge, stern-faced paladin, Paola, in armor, who has long wavy hair and a short, anthropomorphic dog-like snout. The paladin suddenly looks startled. The perspective switches to inside the room at the end of the hall, showing first the rogue peeking around a broken door, then most of the group piling in behind the rogue and collapsing into a heap. The perspective switches to the treasure strewn about the room, then back to the adventurers -- the rogue, ranger, and wizard's eyes are now glittering with greed. Suddenly the paladin scoops the whole group into her arms, pulling them back out of view as a saw-toothed, hook-handed dragon looms overhead. The perspective switches back to inside the room, showing two more dragons -- long-necks trailing out of view -- emerging from the sides to hover in the room. The perspective switches from the blues of the past to the yellows of the present, Winnie stepping up to slaughtered dragons as the lyrics begin: "He comes from the past / Travels to our time / Time for crime". She closes her eyes and starts dancing in place as she sings along. Flipping to the blue past, Winnie's still dancing. The ranger reaches for her shoulder, but the paladin intercepts the ranger, shaking her head. The party moves past the obliviously dancing girl as the lyrics continue: "I tell my friends it's only a fling / But I’ve fallen for the leader of the time crime ring". The wizard kneels and the artificer blows out the flame from over the wizard's shoulder, snickering. The two start bickering, elevating to slap fighting, at which point the paladin rolls her eyes and waves at them to follow her. Meanwhile, the crouched-down rogue opens her jacket, showing tools and knives in the lining. She gets wide-eyed, flustered, and blushes as the ranger leans over the rogue's shoulder, drawing an arrow tight on her bow. As the rest of the party moves around the entrance to the room, Winnie is shown from behind, and a hook rises and glints in the immediate foreground of the shot (ie. behind the group). She turns with wide, frightened eyes, but before she can warn the others, the monsters catch the adventurers by surprise, as the lyrics continue to the chorus:
"Lights flash,"
The hook flashes out and punches through the wizard with a splash of red, jerking him into a pillar, which collapses. The scene flips to the yellow present, Winnie looking down at the arm of the wizard sprawling out from under the collapsed pillar, blood beneath. Back to the past, the artificer backs up, hauling an arm back holding a bomb. A dragon immediately behind him shoots out a white blast, cutting him in half vertically, the red-lined halves slumping. The bomb falls and rolls toward the ranger, who has an arrow pointed at a dragon, then explodes.
"Hearts break."
The ranger staggers out of the smoke in front of the rogue, then shouts as she is skewered from behind and yanked up by a hook that dropped from above. The rogue looks horrified, as hook tendrils shoot into the scene from all sides. She dodges two, before a third wraps around one wrist. It jerks her forward, but she pulls back.
"When they catch up to our getaway car..."
A second tendril catches her other arm, then two more snag her ankles, wrapping around all four of her limbs and hauling her up into the air. Winnie looks up from below as the rogue is stretched and shouts. The staring, distraught girl is splashed across the face by the blood of her friend.
Switching back to the yellow present, Winnie is surrounded by three of her slain friends (the artificer in halves vertically, the rogue in halves horizontally, and the ranger with a hole through her chest).
"...and take him away."
Switching back to the blue past, there's movement behind Winnie, and she spins around, seeing two drooling dragons looming over her.
"Lights flash,"
There's a moment of the yellow, present Winnie stepping past decapitated heads of dragons. The blue, past dragons dart at the past Winnie, and she dodges snapping teeth three times, then looks up from a sprawl into the narrow, open maw of a dragon, rapidly descending upon her.
"Police chase."
The view goes dark with a star burst, but the shot pulls back to show the paladin blocking the dragon's mouth with her shield. She grabs Winnie and hauls her to safety, dodging past and leaping over darting monsters.
"They drop me off..."
The paladin fights the dragons as Winnie peeks from behind the door, her starting place from the beginning of the video. The paladin slashes with her sword and manages to decapitate the last dragon, pausing, glaring forward and sweating as a huge shadow drops behind her. White eyes twice the size of her head glower and a huge, sharp-toothed mouth stretches past the paladin on either side. She looks worried and starts to look behind her.
"...but they drag my baby away."
Present, yellow Winnie stands over the crumpled form of the decapitated paladin.
Winnie in the present looks up, eyes worried, as a dark shape drops behind her, and the eyes of the creature who killed the paladin blink open. Winnie drops her head, a defeated pose. The toothy, drooly mouth opens behind her. Winnie lifts her head, eyes closed, and nods in time to the music, dancing again.
There's a fair amount of flickering back and forth between the past and the present, on the beats -- the hall, the monster looming over Winnie and back -- with additional visual moments representing Winnie communicating with her past self, her magic becoming visible and time running backward.
Winnie, chromatically split vertically between the past in present, but both in sync, sings: "I know they say"
Two blue Winnies sit on the perches in the room, holding bombs, while a yellow Winnie stares out at the viewer, waving another bomb from side to side. A close-up of yellow Winnie dances, staring at the viewer.
"He's from the wrong side of time"
Alternating blue and yellow Winnies sing and dance, the last yellow one directly in front of and facing the huge dark monster. A blue, staring Winnie shimmies, sitting on top of a skeleton with a sword stabbed through the eye (first seen in the establishing treasure shot of the room).
"But that don't keep me away from my window at night"
Yellow Winnie dances between two past, blue dragons. A close up on Winnie as she flips between yellow and blue, forearms coming together in front of her face like shutters. Yellow Winnie dances in front of her dead (but also dancing) blue, past friends. The dance has them leaning to one side, which causes the vertically-split artificer to overbalance just as the shot changes.
"Waiting for him to materialize."
Winnie's hands are seen spinning a large, round, distorting disc (the shield?) as she flips between blue and yellow. A blue and a yellow Winnie are seen facing each other in a split screen, looking at, then pointing at each other before they reach across the color/time divide to grasp each other's wrist. This scene is seen from above as the two and their colors spin around each other.
"Lights flash,"
Open-mouthed dragons recede from the camera as time reverses, serene yellow Winnies riding blue dragons as they fly back to a point in the distance, streaks of blue around them also receding.
"Hearts break."
Winnie is shown, facing the camera and holding both hands together, forefingers curled upward and thumbs extended down to form a heart shape. The Winnies alternate between blue and yellow in a repeating, receding pattern of zooming out of a heart of one color to show the hand-heart being held up by another color Winnie. The five other adventurers are shown in the reverse order of their deaths, each injuring resolving (the paladin's head reattaches, the rogue's top and bottom halves snap together, the ranger's hole in her chest reforms, the artificer's left and right halves snap together, the broken form of the wizard straightens out).
"When they catch up to our getaway car..."
Alternating Winnie's sing with their eyes closed, and then a yellow Winnie opens her eyes in a ring of her blue friends' joined hands.
"...and take him away."
More alternating Winnies, then she is shown dancing in the yellow, empty hall, which turns blue. Still dancing, Winnie moves forward and taps the wizard on the shoulder. He turns and falls back as the hook that would've killed him darts out. The wizard grabs the dragon's arm and is pulled out of the scene.
"Lights flash,"
The yellow Winnie dances forward, grabs the artificer's hand and dips him in a dance move. A dragon pops up and shoots a white blast, which bounces off of a reflective shield and cuts the head in half horizontally. Winnie lets the artificer up and takes the bomb out of his hand.
"Police chase."
Winnie rolls the bomb to land in front of the rogue and ranger, who are back to back, facing three dragons, then darts forward, catching her friends by the hands and pulling them away from the explosion.
"They drop me home..."
The rogue and ranger sprawl to either side as the smiling Winnie continues forward, eyes closed. She pulls the sword from the skull.
"...and they drag my baby away."
The dark, white-eyed shape of the monster that killed the paladin looms behind that adventurer as Winnie drops down from above to stab the creature between the eyes, which squinch shut.
A startled Winnie is flung into the air as the creature throws her off. The view pans back to show the myriad monsters were all actually one -- the huge, white-eyed monster has horns and at least 13 tentacles of varying widths, with the hook-handed dragons on the ends of each (8 heads visible). The monster opens its mouth wide to show a single, enormous, slit-pupiled eye at the back of the cavernous maw.
The paladin catches Winnie -- now blue again -- and the two cringe, the paladin shielding Winnie, as the enormous eye shoots a white blast at the pair. The wizard darts in front of them and casts a magical shield, the space flaring white as the large blast is deflected, even as the three skid backward from the force of impact, bracing themselves.
A dragon darts across the screen, the rogue dangling in the air by the back of her coat in the dragon's jaws. She drops out of her sleeves as another dragon darts toward her. She lands on and runs along the neck (tentacle-length) of another dragon, dodging the three as they twist and snap at her. The rogue grins as she completes her maneuver, the camera pulling back to show the three dragons necks are tied in a knot. As they pull up short, her coat is flung free of the teeth of the one that picked her up. The rogue sticks her arms up and smugly redons her coat as it drops. The ranger is shown shooting two dragons in the back of their open mouths, blood flying, before the ranger and rogue end up next to each other, looking at each other and smiling as they lean in.
The artificer, astride the neck of a dragon, bursts between the two smitten adventurers and they pull back, wide-eyed. At the apex of the dragon's flailing, the artificer is flung up, but rides the neck of the dragon down, hopping off onto a precipice and brandishing the match he lit by striking it against the dragon's neck. The artificer also brandishes his bag full of bombs, not yet lit. The wizard smirks as he pokes at and lights a bomb in the bag with magic. The startled artificer lurches back and trips, dropping the bombs over the precipice. The wizard throws out a hand, catching the bombs in a magical net, which he pulls up and flings over his shoulder.
Spinning, the bag of bombs flies past the kissing rogue and ranger, dropping into the arms of the paladin, who charges forward and throws toward the enormous monster head. Blue Winnie is on top of the head and leaps, reaching for the still-rising bag of bombs as the monstrous mouth below her opens. All five of the other adventurers dart in from the sides, also reaching up toward the bag.
The view switches to a close-up of blue Winnie looking at the viewer, just her eyes and top of head visible as she waves from side to side, then it's yellow Winnie looking at us over one shoulder and smiling, head bopping to the beat of the song.
As all the adventurers start to fall into the monster's mouth, the bag still overhead, blue Winnie at the apex whips even higher in the air and turns to yellow Winnie, reaching the bag and flinging it down, even as all the other characters and the monster are frozen. The bombs go off in a burst of white as the music concludes.
The five other, blue adventurers are shown in the fading smoke, standing and not visibly harmed, though they have freaked out expressions. They look down as blue Winnie straightens up, smiling and dusting herself off.

Ch. 5 - A Way to Live AN: Just a small warning. This chapter will contain a briefly graphic description of death.
After a few hours of watching the same channel, you grew bored. It was at least a thousand times better than being stuck in that damn bathroom, but you were now too curious to be patient with watching the same channel all night. Looking at the time on what Suguru described as the "microwave," you found that you had a few hours to go before daylight.
You decided to see if Suguru was up, again not really thinking about human time or space. You floated on your stomach lazily, resting your head on your forearms, as you made your way to his bedroom. As expected, it was completely dark and you could softly hear Suguru's snoring. From what you could see in the moonlight, his queen-sized bed sat beneath two large windows at the center of the room. He was asleep on his stomach, his arms shoved under his pillow. His mouth was slightly agape, the source of the snoring.
You sighed and stared for a moment, still completely bored but reminiscing of a time where you could sleep. You wondered if it was still possible. Suguru looked completely peaceful, his face still looking somehow familiar - especially now that you could get a good look at it without worrying about being rude for staring.
Suguru suddenly began to stir, picking his upper body up in order to turn. His eyes peeled awake for just a moment, only to widen at the sight of your mist-like form staring at him in the darkness.
"Holy shit!" Suguru hissed, grabbing his chest to catch his breath after yet another fright.
"Sorry!" You yelled in a whisper, flipping off your stomach and going vertical. "I was just...contemplating."
"Yeah...it's alright," Suguru began to calm down, relaxing his body and settling back down into bed. "You know, you could go keep trying to pick things up. That'll keep you occupied."
"S-sure, sorry again," you felt so bad that a feeling in your chest ached. You felt like you were messing up just about everything!
You returned to the living room and continued to watch that boring channel while attempting to pick up the rectangle with buttons that you eventually learned was the 'remote.' You had a few successful attempts in the few hours you tried, but each time it would simply plop right back on the coffee table you grabbed it from. It was at least enough to get by.
"'Mornin," Suguru opened up his bedroom door, sleepy but fully dressed for a day at school. He had a small smile on his face. "Ready to go?"
"To go?!" You were shocked, dropping the remote one last time. "But you didn't have breakfast?" You floated over to him as he began to exit.
"Don't need it," Suguru chuckled, but your furrowed brow told him otherwise. "I'll grab something at school, how's that sound?"
"Better than nothing," you grumbled and followed him out the door.
The two of you took the path to the high school. It was relatively early and it appeared that no one was there except for the two of you. Suguru was the first in the faculty room, flicking on the light switch and meandering toward his desk.
"Why are we here so early?" You asked, looking about the room, specifically at Satoru's messy desk next to Suguru's. The man appeared to have no sense of organization.
"It's just nice to get a head start on things," Suguru calmly explained. "It gives me a chance to meditate and mentally prepare for the day."
"Oh," you replied, "are you Buddhist, then?"
"Mhm," Suguru patiently replied while putting his things on his desk. "Er, well, I try my best. It can be a difficult way of life and my past wasn't necessarily a good one. I'm...trying my best to let it go," he chuckled and looked up at you. "Do you remember if you were when you were...alive? Buddhist, I mean," Suguru hesitated toward the end, unsure if these kinds of questions would be considered rude.
"I...don't know," you gave an expression of deep thought, searching around in your brain. "I really can't remember anything."
"Right, sorry about that," Suguru sighed, "I wonder if there's anything in the archives about your family specifically. Maybe there are living relatives of yours or at least a record of what happened or what your family was like. The jujutsu community is tight-knit, so we have great record keeping."
"The archives?" You wondered.
Suguru gave a crooked smile before preparing to leave the room. "It's next to the library just down the hall on the left. There's a marker, so you can't miss it."
Without another word, you left and headed down the hall with a sense of excitement. You entered into a room filled to the brim with filing cabinets, some looking way older than others. They looked to be organized by last name and from there organized by patriarch. It took you a moment to find your family's folder, and grab it with your minimal presence, but eventually you did stumble upon it. You took it to a nearby desk where you 'sat' and carefully opened it, using what you could of your ability to move the pages. It was still imperfect and some pages took a few tries, but you were determined to read all of it throughout the school day.
The pages laid out your family history. You found out the names of your parents, your aunts and uncles, your grandparents, cousins, and even your siblings. But nearly all had passed away, with all that remained being your youngest sister who was nearing ninety and your nieces and nephews who likely wouldn't recognize you.
Unlike the technique register, this folder went through your genealogy. It told you all about where your family was from, described what they were like. It even had a few newspaper clippings and family photos that were donated. You stumbled upon one that immediately choked you.
It was a simple photo of you, with your parents and siblings. Each of you held a big smile in the black and white image. It looked as if you were celebrating your eighteenth birthday, a cake with your name on it on a table in front of you with your parents behind, siblings seated at your side and leaning in to fit in the photo. Your last birthday that you celebrated with your family...
Within that folder, you found a copy of your death certificate. The one in your class file was likely a duplicate with this one being the original. Just like Suguru described you passed away at 18, just a few days after your birthday. It didn't have a cause, that spot with 'unknown' listed and leaving you with questions. The stamped seal told you that it was authentic.
You swallowed hard as you stared at the words 'Death Certificate' just above your own name. The feeling cut through your body and you felt a knot begin to form in your throat. But you persevered. You continued reading on and looking through pictures, anything to get bits of your memory back.
"Hey, how's it going in here?" Suguru entered with Satoru in tow. You had lost track of the time, looking up at a clock on the wall before over at them. It was already lunchtime!
"Great!" You sniffled happily to hide the fact that you had just been in tears.
"You don't look so great," Satoru lovingly teased as he sat down across from you at the table, "but at least you found stuff."
Suguru took a seat next to you and peered over at the folder, seeing some of the photos of you with your family. He noted the uncomfortable feeling he had previously when staring at them.
"Yeah," your voice shook as you looked down at the folder in front of you. "It's just all really weird to see. Like...I'm dead."
"Well, to be fair, you're looking a little less dead today!" Satoru gave you a pearly white smile.
You gave him a funny look. "What d'ya mean?"
"You look a little more...opaque?" Satoru didn't know how to put it. "And clearly you've been able to flip through these pages, so it seems like something's bringing you back to Earth!"
"I do?" You looked down at your body to find that it was true. The translucency your body had yesterday had become a little darker. "Do you...have those files from yesterday?" You turned your head toward Suguru quickly. "The one with info on my technique?"
"Yeah, I have them back in the faculty room," Suguru confirmed. You stood with his answer.
"Let's go figure this out!" You declared happily, pointing an encouraged finger toward the ceiling.
"Yes, let's!" Satoru high-fived you.
"You guys go on ahead, I want to stay behind and take a look at my file if you don't mind," Suguru stayed seated at the table. You and Satoru nodded and went off together.
Suguru meandered over to one of the cabinets labeled 'げ' and found his file. It was a bit chunky, and a bit hard as if there was something inside. He sat down at the table where you previously sat and opened it up. Within, he found a single, incredibly worn notebook. It was navy blue and had gold katakana 'メモ' for 'memo' on the front. The pages were a bit yellowed but each was dated and the very first page contained his grandfather's name.
Suguru's eyes widened when he realized that he may have stumbled upon a gold mine. He began flipping through the pages, all small diary entries of his time at the high school. Remembering the date of your death, he flipped all the way to its date and began reading.
"We were sent on mission today, the four of us. We shouldn't have been. What was thought to be a cursed spirit turned out to be a curse user, goes by Kenjaku. They wore a different man's body, deep stitches on their forehead. Before the fight, they went on and on about their experiments. About how jujutsu sorcerers are the next part of human evolution..."
Suguru cringed at these words, remembering the delusions he suffered from just ten short years ago. He felt lucky that his friends were there to support him and get him back on track, despite how painful the journey was.
"He targeted her. She's the only one in her family with the technique currently and he said that he needed her...that she could be the catalyst to his current experiments. The fight was brutal, he was relentless. Had to contact Gojo but he got to her before he arrived, slit her neck clean in front of me. Took her away, too. Left us alone after that. Not sure how I can cope. I still picture how she grabbed at her throat before falling limp."
Suguru continued on to the next few pages, learning that your body couldn't be recovered as Kenjaku was no where to be found. A few pages later, he stumbled upon notes from your memorial. It was described as a beautiful event, but what struck Suguru was the nearly torn out note on the page next to it. It looked to be a letter to you...
"Y/N," it was addressed at the very top, "Miss you terribly already. Miss the way you'd giggle at nearly all I had to say, even if it was serious. Miss the way you apologized for everything. Miss the way you stumble into situations with a smile on your face. Miss the way you'd love to play pranks, especially on our easily frightened classmates. Miss the way your hand fit in mine, just barely and not without a tracing of the lines in my palm. I miss everything about you. I wish I didn't have to move on without you, you're etched in my mind permanently. No matter where I go or who I meet, nothing will replace the space in my heart for you. May you be reborn in a beautiful place without pain and may I be reborn next to you when the time comes. I love you more than you'll ever know."
Love?!

So now I’ve come on to check my dash this morning and have discovered what @staff meant by the pirate flag in the “Ongoing” section of yesterday’s post on the @changes … since on Desktop, I’ve got a floating Pirate Clown hanging out in the right side panel of my dashboard… with *no* visible, easily-accessible option to turn it off at the top of the page, as there has been in the past with special events like this.
While my reaction is only a sarcastic “seriously?!” and it’s nothing more than a nuisance to me, I feel legitimately bad for anyone with a fear of clowns (which is a common and well known phobia). Also, it’s blocking the suggested blogs on the side, as well as the “radar” previewed blog. Like, I cannot scroll far enough to get this clown out of the way of the featured artwork without getting the top of it scrolled above my screen’s range.
Now, I’m in a minority of people who aren’t too terribly bothered by the vertical navigation option (the icons going away upset me a lot more), but hey -this may be the best argument yet for the old dashboard style, because A: You know where that clown could have gone and not gotten in the way of anything? That open space on the left would have been perfect -as it was for everything else like this in the past! And B: Remember in past “events” with bells and frogs and other fun features like that day we had some odd light switch and snow on the dash? Most of those had an option to turn them off -which were easily set along the old, top navigation bar, but I guess there’s no convenient place to put one up there now without displacing the whole page.

I've been trying out the browser Zen after a couple mutuals mentioned liking it. It's a Firefox-based customization-focused browser, and it has some pretty cool features.
Now that I've gotten it set up, I'm going to stick with it for a bit and see, but honestly it's probably too early in development to recommend yet. Lots of little bugs and weird edge cases coming up trying to get it basically functional.
One way I've kind of been fighting with it is that by default it seems very focused on the idea of keeping anything you don't need at the moment out of sight, which for me (particularly from ADHD especially during a period of burnout) means those things are out of mind, and it means I'm getting disoriented as things appear in places I'm not expecting.
For instance, in most browsers (and in Zen with the changes I've made), hitting Cmd+T (or Ctrl+T on other OSes) opens a new tab and focuses the address bar. In addition to getting a new tab open, I use this to get a clear starting space when my mind is overwhelmed and I'm thinking of what to do next.
But by default in Zen, hitting Cmd+T only opens a small floating address bar on the screen around where the new tab will appear, and only after you enter where you're going does it actually open the tab. I'm sure for most people this is fine with some adjustment, but for me, that blank new tab is actually a feature to jump to a clear page where I can think
But also as I'm expecting the relief of a new tab, suddenly there's this additional thing popping up that doesn't look like anything I'm expecting at first, so now I've forgotten what I was struggling to keep straight when switching tabs. The first change I made just to make a new tab open didn't even fix that because then as I typed in the address bar suddenly that floating one would appear and jump scare me again.
But yeah, that one was a major one but in general just trying to really figure out which things are just me being used to existing browsers and maybe I should give it a chance vs actually the default not working for me. Like I would absolutely switch back to horizontal tabs if it was an option, but I think I can get used to vertical? It makes more sense bc that space is usually wasted, but also it feels so far out of the way, and I find it hard to read when I'm leaning towards the opposite side of my screen, which just doesn't really come up with horizontal tabs as an issue.
But the thing that made me want to try it was split view for tabs, which I had just been thinking when I heard about Zen would be nice for therapy since my therapist will send links and I'll want to open them while in the video call. Unfortunately the split view functionality is not *quite* there yet to where I think it will be very smooth to use, but I'm going to give it a shot. This is my current layout (I redacted a few things that were possibly sensitive or personal and all my browser extensions):
I don't have immediate plans to use the workspace feature, so I hid the button for that with a style in my userChrome.css file.
I moved the side bar to the right mainly because I wanted to put my bookmarks above it, and that limits how narrow the sidebar can be, and on the other side, the "traffic light buttons" (close/minimize/maximize) push those further right. I tried the collapsed sidebar with only icons, and I mostly liked it better, but I kept having like 5 tabs open to the same website on different pages and I wanted to be able to choose the right one at a glance.
I tried using pinned tabs instead of bookmarks, but tbh I find them to be buggy and annoying. What I would want out of them would be to have somewhere I can click to go to a certain website at any time, and all of those for me work fine as a bookmark, and having it as a tab just give me the chance of accidentally closing it and losing it (which is the same experience I've had with them in other browsers).
As far as splitting the screen, I was really hoping to be able to drag a link over to the side of the screen or hold a modifier key while clicking it to open it in a split view, but so far the best I've found is to Cmd+click on the link to open in the background in a new tab and then hit Cmd+Opt+V (for vertical split or H for horizontal, but I just find that too hard to press one-handed). This works fine for the first link, but to open a second link, I need to close the first one and pay attention when closing it which of the split tabs is focused so I don't kill my video call.
I would really prefer if there were a way to have my split view grid set and locked and be able to either hold a modifier and click or drag links to the other view to open them in it. Currently dragging a link onto a split view opens it in the current view, which I assume is just because this browser is still in development and it's not implemented yet, not an intentional decision.
There are sequences of buttons I could press on my keyboard to reliably end up in a split view between the source tab and the link in it, but memorizing those and having the screen flash a bunch between things just isn't in the cards for this brain.
I do like seeing that when I want to change something that's usually a supported use case or intended future feature, and not something antagonized by the browser maintainers, but for the most part I've kept it fairly out-of-the-box so far.
Oh, well I installed a Zen Mod to increase the size of the tab titles and one to make the tabs in a split view group stack vertically in the side bar instead of horizontally:
#sabrina says#sabrina reviews#or at least previews idk#since my verdict is that it looks promising but too early to recommend generally
