#vertigo on 911

So what I’m getting from Tim posting a 9-1-1!Vertigo movie poster and including Buck, not Marisol, in what is presumably Midge’s role, is that there didn’t necessarily need to be cheating for this arc to work. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I love a good dramatic arc and Vertigo is a banger choice for Eddie’s Catholic guilt and Shannon grief arc, but as far as I know (yes, in my hour of Wikipedia and Twitter deep-diving), that movie doesn’t actually contain cheating, so I’m curious if there’s a reason for it other than drama or not making a carbon copy 9-1-1 version of Vertigo. Is it to make the audience start to dislike Eddie like the Vertigo audience is meant to slowly dislike Scottie, as he continues to make bad choices? Is it to encourage the GA to see Buddie with Buck as the pining Midge? Desperately want reassurance that Tim realizes by making Buck a part of this storyline (especially as Midge), there is no feasible way to dismiss that. Even if Buck’s feelings aren’t explicitly addressed, that poster and any potential on-screen pining aren’t going to be swept away. Season 7 paralleling season 4 regarding Buddie and it’s because The Will and the Vertigo Arc won’t be ignored by the fandom. We’re all gonna go a little crazy methinks, and I can’t wait.

Vertigo (the condition) as a metaphor for gay panic and internalised homophobia (espeically within a catholic setting) is such an interesting one

the idea that vertigo is a safety mechanism from evolution taken to an extreme, but one that can be overcome if worked on and therefore allow you to live a full life and enjoy the view from heights previously unattainable

tim minnear basically confirming pining buck by having him in the role as midge, scottie’s, (or in this case eddie’s) ex-fiancée who still loves him and grounds him in reality at 1:51 am is actually insane. someone sedate me rn.

It’s wild to me that there are people (a lot of buddie shippers) who still seem convinced that Buck’s jealousy in 7.04 has to be about Eddie, when literal canon and the showrunner himself have stated that’s not the case? It’s literally a self-esteem issue for Buck and the reason he feels so upset that Tommy and Eddie are hanging out so much is because Eddie gets to hang out with Tommy and Buck doesn’t (and assumes Tommy wouldn’t want to because he gets to hang out with Eddie).

Like I get y’all are not used to just seeing what’s actually there, but come on. It was written to be a misdirect—aka a storytelling tool used to create a revelation moment later on for dramatic purposes—and Tim himself gave a whole interview about it… have your headcanons and fics, but wild that they can’t (or won’t) acknowledge what’s actually there.

i have never been so convinced that we are gonna get a buddie feelings reveal/realization (probably from buck), and yes it’s because of the vertigo poster.

if y’all are like me and have never seen vertigo before, i did a lil deep dive into it and here’s what i found and how it relates to the vertigo poster that tim dropped.

so in vertigo, scottie (eddie) basically falls in love with this woman madeleine (shannon) who ends up dying right in front of him. while he’s ‘recovering’ from her death, he meets judy (kim), who looks exactly like madeleine and he basically tries to force judy to become her.

however this is not the important part of the whole vertigo thing, that’s just pointing out how similar this eddie storyline already is to the movie.

the important thing is the poster (which @911bts has posted). on the bottom, it has a bunch of names, which for the most part are all names of people who worked on the original vertigo movie. except one. barbara bel geddes is switched to oliver stark which is sooooo significant, specifically because it was so unnecessary (it could have easily been switched to edy or just not been switched at all). this is so significant because barbara bel geddes played midge, scottie’s ex-fiancee who still has feelings for him. midge is the character who is always there for scottie, always tries to do what’s best for him, and is trying to make him fall in love with her again. in my opinion, midge also represents a type of love that scottie isn’t necessarily ready for. in the movie that love is a more mature settled down type of love, however i do think its can easily be translated into eddie not being ready at this moment in the show to love another man.

The Vertigo Poster: It's Just Fun

Apparently Tim has edited the post where he shared the Vertigo inspired poster and clarified it was made by a friend and is a spoof poster.

I'm not going to personally use it in any of my theories moving forward because I don't think anything about the names or placement actually means anything. We don't know how much information this friend was working with. It could be a close friend he discussed the plot with or it could be a facebook friend he's never spoken to about this storyline.

I know a lot of people were speculating this was hinting at buddie or suggesting Tim's queerbaiting but I don't think it's that deep. A friend made a poster, it looks cool so he shared it.

Once people started taking it super seriously in their speculation he edited the post to clarify it's basically fanmade and a spoof. That's his way of gently letting everyone know not to read anything into it.

So everyone just be calm, ok?

It's so fucking annoying watching evryone complain relentlessly about Eddie's cheating storyline. Yes cheating is bad and there's no excuse for it but this is a guy that has been through one trauma after another since he was 18, he barely had any time to breathe, and his relationship with his wife was a rollercoaster and not the good kind, and after a lot of pain when he was putting his family together again, she asked for a divorce and then died shortly after. And he never really got to process that properly and I'm so glad Tim Minear is giving us that exploration even if it's unconventional, but it's a drama after all, not to mention produced by Ryan Murphy, nothing is gonna be sane in this universe.

People are all for three dimensional and flawed characters until they actually get those kinds of characters. As for the cheating, y'all wouldn't survive Grey's Anatomy lol.

Let's be patient and see where the final two episodes take us. I'm always super excited for Devin Kelley's return, and can't wait to see how far this arc goes and how Buck helps Eddie with this delusion.
