Hello UDT, I have been interested in Ukagaka for a while now and I’m sure you’ve had a fair share of complete newbies asking where to start and how to start. I am aware of Zarla’s walkthrough and intro, and wiki stuff. I got only so far reading through Zarla’s walkthrough (without actual commitment just yet) and I get stuck because something isn’t clear enough or I don’t understand the tasks anymore. I have brain damage, I need a direct video walkthrough or someone to intensely coach me, and as much as I feel bad asking the UDT, I really couldn’t find any other resources because of how niche Ukagaka is! Thing is, if I don’t understand what step eight means after going so far, my knowledge of what I’m doing utterly collapses and I don’t know what’s going on! 😭
To be more clear: are there any intense walkthrough resources or updated videos?
I hope this isn’t too much trouble, and I’m sorry if you can’t help or you can’t understand me. Please say all information that you think would be helpful, no matter how useless it might be. I will need it. Thank you in advance, I never try easy new things. 🙏

There are not currently any video walkthroughs that we're aware of, unfortunately. However, there are folks working on new resources and guides! I can't guarantee what will come out or give any kind of time estimate, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye out for new resources that may pop up over time.
If the walkthrough you're looking at isn't working for you, you might consider Kawari no Kawari, which is another ukagaka walkthrough and was written more recently. It's also written in a different programming language though, so some portions of it will likely be unfamiliar. But, perhaps it will gel with you better!
You can also find various guides for different aspects of ukagaka on Ukadoc, such as this guide for creating shells. Ukadoc in general is one of the best resources you can use, since it is the official documentation.
Something else you might consider is breaking things down into smaller tasks. Ukagaka is very modular: shells exist independently of ghosts, and so do balloons. And the "ghost" portion (the code and writing) can be written in a variety of programming languages (called "SHIORI"). So, you might start with creating just a balloon, and get a feel for that. Then try something a bit bigger, like creating just a shell. If you create a shell for a ghost like Hydrate, this can be a super tiny project, but you can also build up and use it to experiment with more complex things like dressups and animations. You can also create shells for more involved ghosts, like FLELE or SSP Angel, for example.
Once you know how to create a shell (and, optionally, a balloon), then that's already half of the mechanics of ghost-making that you know how to do, and can do independently from the writing and coding portion. From there, you might experiment with different SHIORI to see what works better for you. If you're just experimenting and don't want to commit to a SHIORI until you're feeling comfortable, you could grab a freeshell to work with and try out writing dialogue. That way it's much quicker to try out the different options, and you don't have to sink time into the shell portion at all until you've figured out how you're going to write the thing. (Or you can always skip the drawing part entirely by using a freeshell! Creating ghosts with freeshells can be very fun.)
Ukagaka can really be broken down and attacked a bite at a time, and hopefully with each bite you're learning something fun that you can make use of later. A lot of folks take on a whole ghost as their first project, but you can absolutely take time to build up to it if that will help you!
I think it's also worth bearing in mind that ukagaka do not need to be complex to be fun and wonderful. Some of my personal favorite ghosts are ones that don't have any fancy mechanics, they just sit there and talk at me, and have interesting stuff to say that keeps me entertained for hours. So don't feel like you need to make something super complicated for it to be worthwhile, it can be just a simple shell and a pool of dialogue, and be great. Everything else is completely optional and can be skipped. I really mean that, I'll happily go into detail about how much can be omitted from ghosts if anyone is curious about it.
If you're comfortable with it, you might try joining our Discord server. I recommend it in this case because some folks there volunteer as mentors, and you might find it useful to be able to ask for help from experienced devs! Even if you mute most of the rest of the server, you might be able to find some help asking for mentorship and bringing up any specific questions you have, especially if there are points in the walkthroughs that are unclear to you. It's all on a volunteer basis, so we can't make guarantees that anyone will be able and willing to help, but it's the best place you can ask at the moment.

17.) Do you have a writing routine?
A few years ago, I was big on finding a place with a closed door and lighting a candle (partly for vibes, partly to discourage wandering off). But these days, I try to be as informal as possible, so that it's easy to write anytime, anywhere. Sometimes, all you can do is get 15 minutes of copying edits into your draft or jotting down ideas, and those 15 minutes are way better than nothing.
18.) Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours required the most research?
I enjoyed research a lot more about 10 years ago. Search engines are a nightmare these days! I tried to research courtship in Japan and France in the 1930s for Puits d'Amour, and there is. Nothing. Searchable on Google in English for anywhere except the states and the UK. I ended up purchasing some books on the history of courtship that are, sadly, still very US and UK oriented, and just. Making it clear in my fic that the countries portrayed are fictional, largely in part bc I just could not get my hands on the info I needed.
I did some medical research for Seeking Resonance that was really interesting for me at the time, and oddly, came up in my career just last week! I was floored lol!
25.) What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?
I seem to be comparatively light on the worldbuilding and outlining. I love writing because flow state feels amazing and I love editing because it's challenging play. Often, I find that what I want to say evolves from the moods and ideas that occur during flow state. It's been interesting, because over the 12 years of publishing as ahiddenpath, I can see reflections of what I was dealing with personally at the time, and how I resolved that strain with the story. Of course, this kind of writing demands more editing later, as it's so freeform. But I enjoy editing, and I believe my love of writing and need to write are strongly connected to the fact that I use writing to deal with things, to understand myself, to challenge myself, and to grow.
49.) What fic of yours would you say is the best introduction to you as a writer?
How I write and how I think about writing is always changing and evolving, so I suppose my more recent fics? But for the digimon fandom specifically, I usually say After August. Like most of my stories, it's a character-based drama. Specifically, it's about the Adventure Chosen dealing with the loss of their partners and the difficulty of shifting from life as a Chosen in the Digital World to life as kids on earth. Each of them copes in a resoundingly individual way, and they reach out to one another to offer what comfort and support they can.
My works tend to be about people grasping for self-growth and dealing with their demons. They usually aren't plot heavy, although I've been pushing myself to explore plot-based stories recently.
51.) Does what you like to write differ from what you like to read?
One of my closest friends has a master's in literature, and she obligingly wrote me a list of what is... How do you say this? Expertly??? Considered the best literature available in the English language. I've spent the last several years feasting on that, hoping to learn and grow. So, um. My writing can't compete, lol!!!!!
But lately, I've gotten back into reading purely for fun, rather than growth/challenge/experience. I devoured three modern Greek myth retellings in like a three week span, and I have another waiting at the library for me to pick up! Typical, lmao!
The sudden contrast made me notice that, at the risk of sounding snobbish, books written because the narrative is fun, imaginative, and joyful to behold are a different experience than books that encapsulate some aspect of humanity with painful, exquisite, brutal clarity. It's like, hello reader, would you like enjoyment or an existential crisis???? It's been a privilege and a joy to grow from these uh... Literature degree required reading list books. But man it's fun to eat a novel like it's cake!!! OM NOM NOM MORE PLEASE!
I'm not sure if that answered the question at all, but I guess recently I am trying to explore books that I find delightful rather than personally challenging.

Phonics and How English Works

Introduction (Mesmer, 2019)
In order to make use of phonics, children first need to have a deep and clear understanding of how the system of writing works. There are two foundational concepts that children must understand before they can begin to grasp letter-sound relationships: the alphabet and the concept of words in print & writing letters (Mesmer, 2019, p. XV).
I have learned this in the field as my teacher does Fundations with our 2nd grade class, but it was cool reading that the modalities that Fundations utilizes for teaching phonics are proven to be useful ways to get children engaged during phonics lessons: writing on mini white boards, magnetic letters, scissors & paper for cutting out sounds, etc.
Chapter 1 (Mesmer, 2019)
The idea of teaching phonics seems complicated, but every sound and letter has a rule and the rules are learned, writing is a very easy task for students to accomplish, but it just takes time to get to that point.
I took phonetics this summer as a pre-requisite speech and language pathology course through Mass General Health Institute, so most of the information in this chapter was not new to me. One thing I found interesting is the link between phonetics and phonics. While I read this chapter I found myself learning a lot more of the rules of why letters are where they are in words when we spell them out, which is phonics. On the other hand, while I learned all about blends, r-controlled vowels, consonant clusters, and diphthongs this summer, my instruction was more focused on HOW we make each sound with our tongue and oral cavity, the sounds that each one makes and on learning the IPA phoneme symbol for each one, and being able to transcribe English words into phonemes based on my knowledge of which vowels are used in stressed syllables or unstressed syllables, etc. Due to this knowledge, I feel like it will definitely be hard to grasp the idea of teaching phonics while I am doing field experience because I think about all of those concepts in a different way than how they are being taught in phonics instruction in the classroom.
Reflection:
For this readerly exploration I decided to learn something about the author of Letter Lessons and First Words and note how what I learned impacts my motivation for reading. The author of the book is Heidi Anna Mesmer, she is a tenured head professor of literacy at Virginia Tech and has studied beginning reading materials, text difficulty, and struggling readers since 1999. In addition to this book, she has written 3 other books and 4 journal articles on early reading. I was able to find her LinkedIn fairly easily after searching her name, and found out she has been working at Virginia tech as a professor in the literacy department for 21 years; 16 years as an assistant professor and 5 years so far as the head professor. This is the first time that I can recall researching the writer of a book or article I am reading before reading it, and I’m so glad I did! Had I not researched her I would not have felt inclined to read her book, but now knowing her level of expertise I am excited to read all of the knowledge she has to share with elementary school teachers in regard to phonics and early reading.
