Talks Machina Highlights - Critical Role C2E64 (May 28, 2019)
Another week, another adventure into the the wild and dangerous minds of BWF and his wacky sidekicks. I have to say, the quality of Critical Recap has increased dramatically since it first started. Awesome job, Dani! Tonight’s preroll is the celebration of the birthdays of Laura & Liam, which is today, May 28. For those who don’t know, this shared birthday is why they decided to create twins in the first campaign.
Tumblr media
Tonight’s guests: Taliesin Jaffe & Matt Mercer.
Tonight’s announcements: Next Monday, June 3, the episode with Ashley Johnson of Between the Sheets will finally air at 7PM Pacific. Brian says she hates talking about herself, but he got her to open it up. They’re already filming season 3 of Between the Sheets, and that will drop monthly episodes once it begins airing. The My Little Pony oneshot, led by Mark Hulmes from High Rollers, will air this Friday night, May 31, at 7PM Pacific. Roger Craig Smith will be one of the special guest stars on that episode. Tales of Equestria will be loaded to YT on Sunday. Denver Pop Culture Con will be this coming weekend. Limited photo and autograph tickets are still available.
Episode 64: A Dangerous Chase
CR Stats: The phrase “end of the day” was used 11 times this episode. 5 things were invented: “don’t shoot the messenger,” “don’t beat a dead horse,” “par for the course,” the game of golf, and ravioli. Laura held Jester’s astonished look for 15 seconds. CR has now aired over 800 hours in total.
DMing for Colbert was surreal for Matt. It was a week one pipe dream for Matt, which means he was a little afraid it would be a letdown. As soon as they began talking about Stephen’s history, he started feeling more comfortable, but it wasn’t until he saw the first cut the next day where he realized how great it had been. He hopes it isn’t the last opportunity they have to play together. They managed to raise over $100,000 for Red Nose Day.
Caduceus is taking a Mary Poppins approach to talking to people as a way of teaching by example. He hopes people will realize that you don’t have to always use violence to get the information you want. Taliesin, on the other hand, realizes that will never happen. Matt talks about how much he really likes the the impact Caduceus has had on the game, and both Tal & Matt talk about the 3-4 day planning session they had on what high wisdom/low int looks like. “That’s rough, buddy.” “Ahh, that’s exactly what that looks like.”
The M9′s deception during Speak with Dead was a little better than Matt had anticipated, so he gave away a little more information than he’d originally intended. Tal talks about how this must have been something Clay watched happen many times growing up in a funeral home, seeing his family Speak with Dead in order to give peace to a grieving family. It’s an interesting juxtaposition of seeing something his family used a bunch of times growing up being used in a very different way now.
The Charis DC was just because it was a very very high DC--but not impossible. There are people in the world who know about it, but they wouldn’t have reason to cross paths with the M9. It would be like an archaeologist.
The stern Cad during the interrogation was partly an act, because he was trying to perform, but also because there’s a bit of Cad we haven’t seen yet. They all agree that in the cast of CR Ashley is the most actual zen. Everyone agrees Travis isn’t even in the running.
Cosplay of the Week: @graviteacosplay with this nifty Nott cosplay.
Matt was a little surprised they took a path just straight through the Barbed Fields instead of taking a more circuitous, safer route. He expected the rest of the group to protest and was more surprised when they didn’t. They talk a bit about Fjord as an agent of both order and chaos and about how he’s trying to find his place in the world.
The near-death experience has left Cad in a place where he’s not making the best decisions right now. He knows this is dangerous, but he knows they need to check it out, and since they’re “on a mission from God,” everything they do is right. “His risk assessment is a little off right now.” Matt is delighted remembering Sam’s face; BWF points out it’s rare we get one on Sam like that.
The Sorrowsworn are scary because they’re entirely based on emotion. To further develop them, Matt likes looking at their abilities and basing their movement in a horror-film way off that. He knew he would get Travis; he wasn’t expecting to get the rest of the table. “I was very proud.”
Tal has no idea how Cad will process these horror creatures. He wasn’t frightened or freaked out by the grotesque, but he wasn’t really prepared for it, and having Caleb go unconscious was a bit of a fright.
Brian mentions for probably the third time in this show that the next season of Blindspot will be the last one. I’m getting the feeling he’s very ready for it to be done.
When Matt was developing Xhorhas, he wanted to develop all these other societies without the ties to the dark gods. How would they develop with their clan ties? What about as people were assimilated into the clans? What tropes has he seen in other media that he needs to avoid? He talks about how when you build independent areas of your world, it’s a helpful thought experiment to imagine what would happen if they collided. He developed a lot of Xhorhas in pockets and then put it all together.
Tal asks Matt if he was surprised they’d picked up the dodeca. He wasn’t exactly surprised--he’d planned for pretty much all the outcomes of that particular early encounter. He’d meant it more as an exploration of the intro to the Xhorhas world and the Krynn dynasty.
Tal laughs about his very visible reaction to Laura’s Vex voice coming out of Jester this episode. It had nothing to do with his efforts at diplomacy later; he just realized he hadn’t been paying enough attention and had no idea what part of Jester this was supposed to be coming out of.
Fanart of the Week: Just a couple of bugs flyin around, by @_sunsetdragon.
In talking about Clay’s pranks on his siblings, he thinks at some point they at the very least took the bed of an errant sibling out while they were sleeping and put it in a tree overnight.
Matt talks about how if there’s nothing in the books that suits the monster he needs, he just creates one. Tal & Matt start talking about a monster he made for an old campaign called a Dragon Engine; it was designed to build a disease that turned all dragons in a world to crystal, which in turn slowly destabilized the world/planes. Matt took a Dollar Store doll head and covered it in Saran Wrap & hot glue with wings & tentacle bits in odd places. His inspiration was a fetus god boss from the Dark Stalker series. Tal remembers being so annoyed he made this amazing, horrifying creation out of four dollars’ worth of miscellanea. Matt talks about how you can do a lot of amazing things with a bit of hot glue (veins, paint, skinless surfaces).
Cad is aware that the the Xhorhouse is a stationary point in his quest; he is not measuring his quest via distance. He feels okay being stationary right now.
Dunamancy had nothing to do with Caleb; Matt had that inspiration on his own as he was developing the Krynn dynasty. It just ended up working very very well with Caleb’s backstory. He talks about how when he reads theories on Reddit about things linking up, 60-70% of them are actually complete coincidence.
Caduceus has zero interest in the war. At best he doesn’t really like the Empire, but Tal doesn’t think he has the intelligence to formulate a more complex opinion on the war. He has no stake in or understanding of the war in any deeper capacity.
Shakaste’s current location was made up on the spot. Everyone thinks about who Shakaste would main in Overwatch. Matt pulls out the McCree voice. Bastion’s short is Matt’s favorite. BWF loves Reinhardt’s. All three of them start talking about John Wick 3 which I HAVEN’T SEEN YET, GDI, if they spoil that I’m going to weep bitter tears of bitterness. Okay, good, we get out alive.
And we’re done and done! We linger on a shot of Matt & Tal trying to figure out why Episode #69 is funny... (nice).

Princess Iron Man
Instagram member @snowrachell loves both superheroes and Disney Princesses. And, since Marvel is now a Disney property, it only makes sense that Tony Stark should be classified as a Disney Princess. In this installment of Mike McLarty’s continued adventures at the Denver Comic Con, he spotlights some of the  comics publishers he happened upon while wandering the Show Floor.
Determining the difference between a ‘pop culture show’ and a ‘comic convention’ is nuanced. There are no definitive guidelines and in most cases, everything is quite blended to the casual observer.
What’s of some concern to this Comics fan of more than 40 years is that the ‘pop culture’ has taken a huge precedence over ‘Comics.’
Some determining factors to consider when evaluating whether or not the convention is Comics friendly includes a relatively short list of criteria.
I’ll be discussing several facets of that criteria in future installments but in the meanwhile, the presence of Comics publishers is a my focus. If publishers see fit to pay for space at a Con in order to attract fans, that tells us Comics are important.
I’m pleased to report that Denver Comic Con has over a dozen publishers across the Show Floor. Although you won’t find Marvel or DC, you will see Image Comics via Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Imprint. That’s not bad considering Image is consistently the 3rd top selling Comics publisher.
You will also find some medium publishers such as Aspen Comics, Boom! Studios, IDW, Top Cow Productions and Valiant.
Up and coming publishers such as AfterShock and Lion Forge also have their wares for sale.
Rounding out the Comics publishers are Benitez Productions, Zenoscope Entertainment, Action Lab, Stranger Comics, Lee and Low Books, Theory Comics and Hachette/Orbit.
In my next installment we’ll discuss another factor that lets us know how much the word ‘Comic’ really means in the title of a convention; the folks that actually make comics.
Here are the first two installments; Cosplay and First day coverage.

John Leguizamo is heading to Denver to sign your comics, be in your selfies and answer your questions
Actor and writer John Leguizamo will sign copies of his graphic novel “Ghetto Klown” at the Denver Independent Comics & Art Expo (DiNK), April 14-15 at the McNichols Civic Center building. (Provided by DiNK)
Through dozens of film, TV and theater projects over the past three decades, John Leguizamo has gotten intimate with the never-ending process of promoting his latest project.
But even having co-starred in “Spawn,” “Kick-Ass 2,” “Super Mario Bros.” and the “Ice Age” films — among other comic book-friendly fare — the 53-year-old Emmy winner is still a relative newbie to the comic-con scene.
“This is only my second comic con like this,” said Leguizamo, who will appear at this weekend’s Denver Independent Comics & Art Expo in support of his Eisner-nominated graphic novel “Ghetto Klown.” “I’ve done them before — including the big one in San Diego — but those were more like movie panels with the whole cast. It wasn’t a one-on-one with my own graphic novel.”
In addition to signing copies of 2015’s “Ghetto Klown,” which shares a name with Leguizamo’s one-man show and HBO special from 2014, fans can catch him elsewhere at this year’s DiNK, which returns to the McNichols Civic Center building April 14-15.
The 53-year-old will appear from noon to 2 p.m., and again from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on April 14  to sign books with optional “selfie sessions.” He will also participate in a 2:30-3:15 p.m. panel at DiNK that day — as well as a VIP meet and greet and signing/selfie session 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on April 15.
[related wide=true]
A 9 p.m. screening on April 14 of the film “Moulin Rouge!” (in which Leguizamo plays Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec) will conclude with an in-person Leguizamo Q&A at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at Sloan’s Lake. The event, which follows the annual DiNKy Awards (at 7 p.m. April 14), is sold out. (Full disclosure: This reporter is hosting Leguizamo for the Q&A and has participated in DiNK panels in the past.)
We caught up with Leguizamo, who’s also behind the new “Freak” comic book series, via phone from New York to talk about comics, Latino representation in pop culture and more.
Actor and comedian John Leguizamo, shown here in a still from his Broadway production “Ghetto Klown,” remains tireless in his quest to chronicle the Latino experience in America. (Provided by Slate PR)
Q: What brings you to your first DiNK?
A: My comic book, which is mostly what I’m going to be talking about. It’s sort of the missing piece of representing Latin people in comic books — especially when so many Latin people were the pioneers in the drawing of comics. Alex Schomburg was a Puerto Rican guy from the 1940s who drew Captain America, the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner. The Hernandez Brothers (who attended last year’s DiNK) were pioneers with “Love and Rockets.” (Alberto) Vargas was a Peruvian painter whose comic book-y pin-up girls were influential in comic books. The list goes on.
Q: The last time you visited Denver you performed an early version of “Latin History for Morons” at Comedy Works, which just finished its six-month run on Broadway. How did that go?
A: Testing it out in the comedy club in Denver was amazing because it gave me the opportunity to get into the Public Theater (in New York), which is the most prestigious theater-development center in America. “Hamilton” came out of there. “Fun Home” came out of there. It’s the birthplace of the best theater in America and I got in because I was able to workshop it and fix it in places like Denver.
Q: As with most stand-ups, clubs are ideal for testing out new material — in part because the stakes are much lower than with a theater or TV audience.
A: The comedy clubs allowed me to make the (Latin) history very palatable and very funny. And then on Broadway we had people like Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Spike Lee, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Moore and Michael Douglas showing up.
Ghetto Klown by John Leguizamo (Abrams ComicArts, October 20, 2015)
Q: Intimidating fans to have. How did the show do?
A: We were the first show of the Broadway season to recoup (production costs). … I think it was something like $2 million?
Q: As a native of Colombia, you’ve been vocal about the lack of Latino representation in pop culture. Where’s the Latino equivalent of #MeToo or #OscarsSoWhite?
A: We Latin people are the most underrepresented in film, even though we make up 23 percent of the box office audience. My Broadway show recouped because of Latin people going. But Hollywood and comic books and the media are resistant to Latin people getting a chance to be the front-men and front-women. I don’t understand why an animated movie like “Coco,” which is all Mexican stories, makes so much money, or “Hamilton,” written by and starring a Puerto Rican, becomes the biggest hit Broadway has ever had, and yet comic books are so far behind.
It’s a tragedy because Latin people are the second-oldest ethnic group in America, and they’ve fought in every single war this country’s had. We were there for the American Revolutionary War; 10,000 unknown Latino patriots fought in that. So in the era of prominent Latinos in the news — like Emma Gonzalez (high schooler and gun control advocate), or Xavier Becerra, the attorney general of California who’s fighting attacks on the environment and on sanctuary cities — it doesn’t make sense.
Q: Where do you look for progress?
A: I’m very excited about what we can do in the digital space, because that’s where all the innovation is happening. Cardi B, she came out of Instagram. Justin Bieber came out of the digital space. It’s the new place that’s democratizing inclusiveness, instead of highlighting the lack of it. There are Latin comedians, like the mitú group, who have huge amounts of followers online. Latin people are online, too!
Q: What’s next for you? Anticipating any award nominations this year?
A: The Tonys haven’t been announced yet, but let’s hope. It’s rough for comedies to get the same respect as dramas and musicals. I’m pioneering in this genre and breaking a lot of taboos, but it’s still hard for a one-man show. “Freak” (the 1998 HBO version of which was directed by Spike Lee) was nominated for two Tonys, and they took down the category for one-man shows when I did “Sexaholix,” and then when I stopped performing it, they put it back up! Just the luck of the Latin, I guess.

One of the fun-nest things about many fun things at the Denver PopCon was the chance to see Stephens College film professor (and MFA alum) Chase Thompson debut his film Tampsen Air. He shared fascinating stories about the concept and the production work in the film with the audience- and the various other Screenwriting MFA alums who came out to show their support.Denver Pop Culture Con Stephens College  Stephens College MFA in TV and Screenwriting  Tampsen Air

A 9 p.m. screening on April 14 of the film “Moulin Rouge!” (in which Leguizamo plays Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec) will conclude with an in-person Leguizamo Q&A at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at Sloan’s Lake.
