i hope this isnt too random and is something you can help me with--i'm needing a reference of someone around the 1870s-1880s running, like a dull on sprint, in a bustle dress. would that even be possible? would she just be lifting the dress part up and have the layers underneath be showing? would she pull up the crinoline (if those were worn at the time, i'm sorry i'm too lazy to research atm) as well? i hope the question isnt too broad or confusing. thank you so much!!!!
Hi! Not at all too broad or confusing question!
I'm assuming you mean the Second Bustle Era dress, since it's the more well known and iconic bustle style. The First Bustle Era was roungly the first half of 1870s, then there was Natural Form Era in the middle and the Second Bustle Era was most of 1880s. The two bustle eras were distinctive in style, but they mostly had similar layers. To illustrate the difference here's a fashion plate from the First Bustle Era and another from the second.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes you could run in a bustle dress. As you see especially in the Second Bustle Era dresses, the hem didn't quite reach the ground, which is really the the thing that will get in your way, if it would. As someone who has worn several different full length evening dresses (not very historical though but that's beside the point) and ran and danced in them, I can say the issues only really come when the hem reatches the ground. Then lifting the hem becomes necessary.
A type of cage crinoline was indeed used with the bustle dress, called bustle cage. Unlike the typical crinoline it was only in the back, shaped similarly as 18th century side panniers, because that's where all the volume was, so it wouldn't get in the way when running. There are though some examples of bustle cages that did go all around and simply were more volumous in the back, but I haven't seen any of them being dated into 1880s. The first bustle cage below is from 1887 and the second is from 1870-72.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A full crinoline though actually helps moving around and running. It was one of the reasons why it become so quickly so widely used in 1850s. It carries the fabric of the dresses keeping them away from the feet.
Even when lifting the hem isn't necessary, it's likely that while running the petticoat would show at least a bit. Shift hem wouldn't likely be seen as it was a bit shorter and the first layer. Petticoat was worn over the bustle cage and would help giving the fashionable silhouette, though some skirts would have a foundation skirt attached to them and then separate petticoat wasn't needed. It was most often white and had more volume in the back often in shape of ruffles. Here's couple of examples, first from 1883 and second from 1886.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought primary source references could be easiest to find regarding dancing and tennis. I thought it might give a nice range of different types of dresses. I didn't find useful painting of dancing in Second Bustle Era gowns, but this one from the First Bustle Era is close enough, I think.
Tumblr media
I found two paintings depicting tennis in bustle gowns, one from the First and another from the Second Bustle Era.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tennis was played in the typical summer day dress, which for tennis were traditionally white. So the outfit would have all of the layers like you'd normally have and the dress would be from light breethable materials, light cotton usually, and sometimes a little more loose fitting, so it does work as a good reference for how to move in an average day dress.
Lastly I'll link here a video from Prior Attire channel, where she dresses up in about 1885 dress for tennis and demostrates playing tennis in it. It shows really well how that type of dress moves and how you can pretty easily move and run in it without having to really do anything about it. The full demonstration starts around 23:37 mark, but the full video is useful in showing all the layers that goes into it.

1880s: Dominique is very Masculine, and very Eccentric
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In today's standards, Dominique is a fairly feminine woman. Yes she's wearing a prince inspired outfit, but it's feminized with the tight pants, long stockings, heels, and long hair, but what if I told you that was all considered masculine in the olden days?
Tumblr media
The Time Period
Givn the story takes place when the alternate Eiffel Tower (can't remember the name) was being built, we can assume vnc takes place in the late 19th century, otherwise known as the Victorian era, ranging from 1820 to 1914.
The fashion looked somewhat like this, you can see some similarities to the outfits worn by the main cast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dominique's outfit doesn't really resemble much of the fashion at the time, you can make som mild comparisons to Victorian royal menswear, but I'd say her fashion is more similar to 17th century royal menswear, specifically,
King Louis XIV
Tumblr media
The long hair, the tight white bottoms, the heels, the loose sleeves, the train of fabric behind him, It is said that King Louis was a big womanizer, who does this all sound like? It's almost as if Dominique is trying to be Louis- oh wait.
Also fun fact, King Louis XIV was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Masculinity & Eccentricity
For us in the present, King Louis XIV looks pretty feminine, and that was probably a shared sentiment in the 19th century, he looked outdated, but that same outfit on a woman like Dominique would cause some controversy if not for her status.
In the 19th and early 20th century, a woman wearing pants was not too accepted, women usually wore dresses, and pants were kept as a sports/work attire. A woman would not just go on about her day wearing a pair of pants, she'd be seen as strange, and maybe even get into trouble. Dominique wearing pants, and very tight pants reminicscent of older eras, is definetly a bold choice.
Her hair is long and straight, which is not how you'd usually describe a victorian woman's hair. It wasn't even that much of a gender thing, but more of a formality thing. Women at the time would have their long hair in an updo. Actually, according to Whizzpast, long loose hair was a thing only models and actresses wore to depict romantisiscm and intimacy.
Dominique's long hair makes a lot of since, she has a bold, eccentric personality, she's not one to conform, she's the current family outcast, but she is also a very romantic person, and is constantly seen in romantic/intimate scenes, so her loose hair really depicts that.
All in all, Dominique's appearance states a bold, romantic blast to the past with a pinch of her desceased brother.
If you want to look into queer subtext, you can assume that''s one of the reasons Noe drinks her blood.

EL CAMPO SANTO CEMETERY
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
Just a few footsteps away from the Whaley House, El Campo Santo Cemetery is also known for its haunted occurrences. Established in 1849, this Roman Catholic cemetery was originally the burial ground for more than 450 people, including Yankee Jim Robinson, who was hung on the grounds of the Whaley House years before it was built.
The trouble here started when the city built a horse-drawn carriage line and later paved over part of the cemetery to make way for car travel. At least 18 graves are known to be under the street and sidewalk, leaving those buried below very unhappy.
Those who walk the grounds of this historic cemetery have also had mysterious experiences: An icy chill coming over them, glowing figures, a floating image of a native American, a specter that appears to be dressed in period clothing and a woman in a Victorian gown, just to name a few.
It’s no surprise that in a city so many centuries deep in history there are places where the spirits of the dead seem to linger. Not wanting to move on to the other side, they appear in many different forms. Whether intending to haunt or just tormented by their uncertain existence, their presence has been witnessed time and time again.
Cars parked on the street would often have problems starting. Their car alarms would often go off suddenly, and with no reason. In order to appease the spirits beneath the street, special marks have been placed in the pavement to show where the original graves are located.
Those who live and work around the small suburban cemetery regularly report strange happenings which can only be attributed to that of a haunting. Intermittent power outages occur without explanation, irritating those trying to live harmoniously with the dead.
Alarm systems start and stop at will, lights randomly flicker throughout homes and businesses; even their appliances will inexplicably turn on and off. Little annoyances like these are the norm while living by the El Campo Santo Cemetery.
Numerous apparitions have been seen in and around El Campo Santo, gliding around directly above grave markers. Usually dressed in traditional 19th century attire, these ghosts are thought to be those of the Workman family who make up the majority who are buried here.
Extreme drops in temperature have been reported throughout the grounds on multiple occasions; a telltale sign of a paranormal entity present. These cold spots are almost always accompanied by flashes of light and hovering orbs.
In several occasions, visitors of the historic graveyard have attested to mistaking poltergeists for park employees. Upon reaching the employee to converse, they will suddenly vanish.
Some phantoms are seen floating around with only an upper torso. Sightings that may be telling as to how the spirit died.
Many tourists have snapped pictures in and around El Campo Santo, later finding mysterious objects littered throughout their photos; objects that weren’t there previously.
An unidentified female apparition regularly glides around the south wall, sporting a white Victorian dress. She quickly dematerializes upon contact.
Reports of a Native American spirit have also been passed around. This one is said to float just an inch or two above the ground; its identity remains unknown.

knock knock knock !!
maddie can barely hear the rapping on the door , given she's blaring her music as she applies her makeup . it's not until alice calls for her to answer the door that she realizes someone's there . groaning , she rushes downstairs and opens the door , and is greeted by a tall man dressed in a suit as well as a younger man , about madeline's age .
the shorter of the two sports a modern business fashion , half of his blueish hair covering an eyepatch while the rest is slicked back . the taller is dressed like he's attending a victorian ball , his suit almost competing with victor's normal attire . the three stare at each other for a moment before maddie finally breaks the silence , " can i help you ? "
she was expecting the taller one to speak first , and is surprised when the younger holds out his hand . " good afternoon , " he starts , his refined accent placing him from around london . boy he's sure far from home , she thinks before he continues . " my name is ciel phantomhive . i'm here to speak to alice liddell and victor van dort . is this their residence ? "
madeline laughs , glancing down at his hand in confusion . " uh , if by residence , you mean renting , then yeah . we're not interested in your religion or investing in your business , if that's what you're here for . "
the taller chuckles ; a devilish smile indeed . " oh no , my lady . we're just here to ask some questions . does the name angus bumby ring a bell ? "
chills roll down maddie's spine . who the hell are these guys ? " look , i don't know what kind of game you two are playing , but we're not interested . you can leave now . "
as she goes to shut the door , the elder man slips his foot through the crack , keeping her from closing them out . " sebastian michaelis , my lady . this is urgent , and we need to speak with your parents . "
maddie sighs , then opens the door , knowing she won't get rid of these two that easily . " fine . mom , dad ! these two weirdos are here to talk to you ! "

Going Back in Time
Tumblr media
If men of a certain age are propelled back to their younger years of the 1960s-1970s, they will notice the same things, more-or-less, as each other. Generally, these will be cars and girls, major sports events, TV shows and lifestyle changes - such as smoking habits and sexism in the workplace.
Fitting-in poses its own problems - the use of today's language, environmental awareness and... knowing more future history than your peers.
A comment on my book noted that other authors have started their time-related stories with a similar beginning (but completely different plots). I have also noticed some differences in the way English and American readers reacted to my book, My Time Again.
An American reviewer thinks that my characters are 'wooden' whereas reviewers in Britain for both my novels find the characters believable. This highlights the differences between the two cultures, especially the further back one travels in time (imagine the 'wild west' vs the Victorian industrial revolution).
For example, even 50 years ago, Brits were far more formal in their attire and in their speech. There's little doubt that the USA has influenced us over the years but this was not so much the case half-a-century ago, when tourism between the two countries was quite rare and so were computers - the internet wouldn't exist for a couple of decades.
The British view of an American lifestyle was via movies. I doubt that it was reciprocal but there was a shared love of popular music between the two countries.
Brits also had a little access to USA TV shows via the two or three British channels; mainly late 60s/early 70s monochrome dramas or sit-coms. Has anyone else on Tumblr heard of Peyton Place (Ryan O'Neal and Mia Farrow) or My Three Sons (Fred MacMurray)? In 1970, The Banana Splits aired on BBC1, 2 months after NBC cancelled it! Did any British TV shows air in the USA, e.g. Doctor Who (1970 marked the debut of the third Doctor) or Coronation Street (still popular today) or The Goodies? Unlikely.
Back to the book comparisons: there will be elements of similarities between any stories but there is very little to compare between My Time Again and any other that I'm aware of, despite a reviewer's comparison. At least he bought my book and for that I am grateful.

Prologue: Straying from Society—Part One
———————————————————————
This will take place from our perspective.
We had been on our way to a warehouse. The evidence pointed to the suspects hiding out there. I had been speaking with ??? about our plan the entire drive, occasionally changing the topic to talk about what we’d be doing after we got off. Suddenly, an explosion was heard, our car went flying and as I slowly faded into unconsciousness, I saw four men in business attire approach us, but then, I blacked out.
I opened the door to find another room filled with people who seemed to be close to my age, all but four staring me down. I counted 16 heads in total, not including myself. “Did you enjoy your rest?” A blonde man asked me as he pushed up his glasses. I could sense that he was annoyed with me already, so I simply nodded and asked if I were the last one. I must have been because all of the doors around me had digital pictures of the rest of the people around me. “I TOLD YOU DUMBASS! I’M STILL GROWING!” “Right~ And how long have you been saying that?” “What’s your problem man?!” “You’re my problem.” We all turned to face the areas the two arguments were coming from. A redhead sporting a fedora held a brunette man by the collar of his shirt with a death glare that could kill while the other seemed laidback and unfazed. The other two were also both men, one with black hair and white bang tips dressed in a black and white Victorian outfit, seeming to have activated his ability. The other, an albino with a black streak also having activated an ability to turn into a Weretiger? Strange, but not the strangest I’ve seen. The brunette from the other fight broke out of the redhead’s grip and touched both boys heads which seemed to deactivate their abilities, “That’s enough commotion out of you two for now”. How ironic coming from the provoker of the other fight. Suddenly, a medium sized flat screen TV hanging on the wall lit up. The screen was half white and half black “report to the gymnasium immediately for the welcome ceremony.” Said a robotic monotone voice. Most of us seemed skeptical at first, but eventually unanimously agreed to attend in hopes of attaining knowledge of our current situation.
We walked the halls, the four still shooting glares here and there. It was clear from the air surrounding us that the distrust was strong enough to kill. Looking around, I took note of landmarks that could be useful for the future such as what appear to be bathroom doors and a staircase. “Hey uh, you’ve been pretty quiet.” The albino from earlier snapped me out of my thoughts, “Sorry about the fight. That Akutagawa guy just makes me so angry! Oh, My name’s Atsushi Nakajima. I’m the Ultimate Babysitter. It’s nice to meet you…” “likewise, I’m (Y/N) (L/N), the Ultimate Scientist.” Then it went silent for a few awkward seconds until Atsushi said, “You’re not much of a talker, are you, (Y/N)?” While sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck. “I talk, but only if I deem it necessary.” Silence fell upon us again…until the messy haired brunette approached us with a cheeky grin. “Ah, it seems I’ve found yet another belladonna! Though you seem to be the most beautiful of them all! Would you be so kind and grant me the honor of assisting me in a double suicide?” Is this guy serious? Did he honestly just ask me to commit suicide with him? Suicide! We don’t even know the situation yet he already wants to die? Although…this could make for a fun little experiment to entertain myself. I put on a fake smile and closed my eyes and said in reply, “What method did you have in mind?” He seemed to falter slightly at my response. Atsushi was in pure shock. The other male recovered quickly, however, and said, “any painless way your heart so desires!” Oh, how fun it is to experiment with human emotions! I was so lost in thought, I hadn’t even realized that we arrived in front of two doors with a newer-looking sign that said “gymnasium” hung above. Everyone seemed nervous or skeptical to open the doors except for one, a shorter boy with a farmer’s hat covering the nape of his neck hanging by a thread looped around his neck. He pushed the doors open, all of us unaware that what lay ahead would change our lives as we knew it.

2 minutes into Bridgerton's first episode and I'm already mad. At least they had properly fit corsets and they didn't try to put the foot on her back to tighten.
AS A DRESS HISTORIAN and someone who wears a heavily boned 1889 corset almost every other day (I have back issues and proper corsets relieve so much pain) let me tell you leaning forward while lacing? That's a great way to improperly lace lol (especially when we're talking regency era and we're likely seeing wooden center busks in those things) I just lost a bunch of ranting bc i hit a button somewhere but the short version is go google "regency short stays", they're fairly similar to a modern bra. And sport corsets existed, prior attire goes swimming in one in a video, just like sports bras exist now. Regency era had so many options for undergarments and because of where the waist hit on the silhouette (right under the boobs) not a lot of shaping was needed below the waist of the silhouette. Long stays existed, sure, fashion changed so fast then but regency is generally the most comfortable era for people new to fashion history.
The whole fucking scene is problematic for women and honestly it's such a tired trope i don't even want to continue watching lol
I can count off the top of my head 5 identical scenes from different genres spanning almost a hundred years and I know there's more. When are we gonna get tired of this women hating trope, I'm so exhausted of being told lies to my face by media bc haha woman stupid, they don't need rights, haha.
Please, please read up on undergarments and clothing of the 19th century (modern panties are evil?) if you're into period dramas, I know it's a lot info but it's astonishingly simple. If you can't read go on over to youtube and look up:
-Priore Attire (historical sewing and fashion showcase) -Abby Cox (fashion history, Nicole Rudolph's former neighbor and business partner, deep dives, sewing, antique clothing showcase) -Karolina Żebrowska - (fashion history with a focus on Polish fashion) -Morgan Donner - (everything you need to know about medieval fashion, historical sewing and textile work) -Bernadette Banner - (victorian/edwardian fashion historian, ACCURATE historical sewing [by hand and on a period accurate antique machine even], she's written a book, she has skillshare classes, she also has the unique view of corseting with scoliosis, she is so incredibly knowledgeable and has a nice voice lol) -Nicole Rudolph - (fashion historian, Abby Cox's former neighbor and business partner, co founder of american duchess, shoemaker, antique clothing showcase and replication, historical sewing)
The MET has a website, archive.org has free books (I streamed a historical sewing stream once and was able to actually go look up a historical ad for the exact type of corset I was making from a book from 1845, they have everything there), hell, type historical sewing into google and you'll be flooded.
IF YOU WANT GREAT HISTORICAL FASHION IN YOUR MEDIA I urge you to watch The Nevers, some of the best I've seen in the last little bit, right down to a fancy mismatched petticoat making an appearance and actual action fighting in actual corsets. It's not fully accurate and Joss Whedon worked on the first few episodes before they kicked him but it is a great show and has great fashion

Fashion in 1895
Context:
Fashion evolved rapidly during the 1890's. Popular fashion now threw away the bustle cages from the second bustle era in the previous decade and began focusing the attention on sleeves. Simple A-line skirts and lavish decorations continued o feature, as fashion moved into a more practical aspect as women's sports became more popular with hiking and cycling.
The late 1890's also saw the rise in popularity of 'The Gibson Girl' often seen as the first example of our modern 'aesthetics' like Cottagecore. The Gibson Girl became more popular in the early 1900's however, this decade saw the beginnings of the popular Chignon hairstyle, the pigeon breast and S shaped bodies in women.

Sleeves:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(On the left, a photo of Frauline C. Bohn S circa 1860. On the right a design by House of Worth circa 1895)
Undeniably, the biggest change in this period of fashion is the Leg-Of-Mutton sleeves and the innovations that had to be made because of them. A quote from The Victorian Dressmaker by Izabela Pitcher states "Slight growth in the head of the sleeve was already evident by the end of the 1880's, and in the following decade the sleeve ballooned out to rather enormous proportions, mirroring the Romantic styles of the 1830's" This is one of many great examples of circling fashion trends during the Victorian period, outright diminishing the claim that fashion trends moved slower without the fast communication methods we have now, and also the forever evident case of popular trends circling every 20 years or so. I love that in the two images above, you can clearly see the inspirations that the 1890's gown took from a previous fashion trend that was seen in the 1860's and even earlier, the 1830's. The Victorians took the classic elements from the romantic era, and made them popular again in a way that was current and fashionable with the turn of the century and rise of sports.

The Evolution of Women's Golf Clothes
Golf, long regarded as a sport steeped in tradition and formality, has seen a paradigm shift in recent years, especially when it comes to women's golf clothes. No longer confined to conservative and restrictive attire, female golfers now navigate the greens with a diverse and stylish array of clothing that seamlessly blends performance, comfort, and individual expression. This in-depth exploration delves into the extensive evolution, current trends, and empowering aspects of women's golf attire, highlighting the intersection of fashion and function.
Historical Roots
The journey of women's golf clothes can be traced back to the late 19th century when women first started venturing onto the golf course. During this period, societal norms dictated that women wear Victorian-inspired attire, consisting of long skirts and high-collared blouses. While these garments were suitable for the prevailing norms, they proved to be impractical for the dynamic movements required in golf, hindering the development of women's golf as a competitive and accessible sport.
The Roaring Twenties marked a notable turning point in women's golf clothes. As societal norms underwent significant changes, so did women's attire on the golf course. Flapper dresses and knee-length skirts emerged, reflecting a departure from traditional constraints and a move towards more practical and comfortable fashion. This shift laid the groundwork for a more inclusive golfing experience for women, allowing them to participate in the sport with increased freedom of movement and style.
Functional Innovation
The latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st century witnessed an influx of innovation in women's golf apparel, driven by the growing participation and influence of female golfers. To enhance both performance and style, designers and manufacturers began incorporating advanced materials and technologies into golf clothing.
Moisture-wicking fabrics became a cornerstone of women's golf apparel, ensuring that golfers remained comfortable and dry during extended periods on the course. These fabrics efficiently draw moisture away from the body, contributing to a more enjoyable and performance-focused experience. The advent of stretchable and breathable materials further revolutionized women's golf clothes, allowing for unrestricted movement and optimal comfort during swings.
Contemporary Trends
The current landscape of women's golf clothes is a vibrant tapestry of innovation, diversity, and style. Conventional polo shirts and khaki skirts have given way to a spectrum of colors, patterns, and silhouettes that cater to the preferences of the modern female golfer.
Athleisure, a trend blending athletic and leisurewear, has gained substantial traction in the world of women's golf apparel, offering a seamless integration of performance-driven materials with fashion-forward designs.
Athleisure in women's golf clothes emphasizes not only functionality but also the importance of expressing individual style on the course. From sleek, fitted tops to stylish yet functional skorts, today's female golfers have an extensive wardrobe that effortlessly transitions from the fairway to social gatherings. This trend not only aligns with the contemporary fashion landscape but also attracts a younger demographic to the sport, breaking away from the stereotypical image of golf as a conservative pastime.
Accessories and Personalization
The ensemble of women's golf apparel is incomplete without the addition of carefully chosen accessories. Visors, hats, and sunglasses have become essential items, providing both practical protection from the sun and an extra layer of style. Brands have responded to the demand for specialized accessories by offering a wide range designed specifically for female golfers, further emphasizing the importance of a well-coordinated and fashionable look on the course.
Personalization has emerged as a key trend in women's golf apparel, allowing golfers to add a unique touch to their clothing and accessories. Many brands offer customization options, enabling golfers to monogram polo shirts, personalize golf bags, and even create bespoke shoe designs. This shift towards personalization adds a layer of individuality and empowerment, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in one's golfing identity.
Breaking Stereotypes
The evolution of women's golf clothes has played a pivotal role in challenging longstanding stereotypes associated with both the sport and gender. No longer confined to outdated notions of prim and proper attire, female golfers now showcase their styles with confidence and authenticity. The diverse range of clothing options reflects the inclusivity and modernity that women bring to the world of golf, dismantling preconceived notions of what a golfer should look like.
This breaking of stereotypes is not merely confined to the realm of fashion but extends to the broader narrative of women in sports. As women continue to make strides in golf, their attire becomes a visual representation of their progress, emphasizing that athleticism and style are not mutually exclusive. The evolution of women's golf clothes symbolizes a broader cultural shift towards recognizing and celebrating the multifaceted identities of women in sports.
Empowerment Through Fashion
Beyond aesthetics, the evolution of women's golf clothes plays a crucial role in empowering female golfers. The intersection of fashion and function allows women to approach the game with confidence and focus, unencumbered by the limitations of traditional and restrictive attire. The availability of stylish, performance-oriented clothing ensures that women can fully immerse themselves in the sport, showcasing their skills without compromising on comfort or personal style.
The diverse range of options in women's golf apparel also contributes to a sense of inclusivity within the golfing community. Women of all ages, body types, and backgrounds can find clothing that suits their preferences and allows them to feel comfortable and confident on the course. This inclusivity fosters a supportive environment that encourages more women to take up golf, further diversifying and enriching the golfing community.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the evolution of women's golf clothes is a compelling journey that intertwines the realms of fashion, functionality, and empowerment. From the restrictive garments of the past to the contemporary fusion of style and performance, female golfers today have the freedom to express their individuality on the course like never before. The trajectory of women's golf apparel mirrors the broader cultural shifts towards inclusivity and breaking down stereotypes, providing a platform for women to redefine their identity within the traditionally male-dominated realm of golf.
As golf continues to evolve, so too does the fashion that accompanies it. Women's golf apparel stands as a dynamic and integral part of the sport's identity, reflecting the diverse and powerful voices of female golfers. The journey from long skirts to contemporary athleisure is not just a sartorial evolution; it is a testament to the resilience, strength, and individuality of women in golf, symbolizing their elegance in motion on and off the course.

The Comprehensive Evolution and Empowerment of Women's Golf

I really enjoyed researching into the history of the Victorian Era, I looked at the different types of art during the era and I found it interesting reading into the difference between each art style and the meaning that was behind each one.
I also found the evolution of fashion during the Victorian era quite fascinating as there were many changes throughout the period of the styles and that there were many specific styles of clothing for certain occasions, such as; day dresses, evening dresses, sport dresses and mourning attire that was expected to be worn.

Amelia Bloomer 1818-1894.
Amelia Jenks Bloomer was an early suffragist but was also a fashion advocate who worked to change women’s clothing styles. After noticing the health hazards and restrictive nature of corsets and dresses, Bloomer pushed for women to adopt a new style of dress. The pantaloons, now called Bloomers, were baggy trousers beneath her shortened skirts. At first, bloomers were outrageous and only worn by a few brave radicals, as the were subjected to ceaseless ridicule in the press and harassment on the streets.
