Do we know any rituals for when a child is born? Gods to ask for their protection?
Mention is made very frequently in the sagas of a ritual that involves sprinkling a child with water (at ausa vatni) and is usually mentioned in connection with the child being given a name, which implies that these were done together in a single ritual. It's not described in enough detail to determine exactly how this was done or what it was meant to do, but it's generally accepted that it was a sort of initiation into full personhood and the web of human relations, because according to Harðar saga ok Holmverja it was the point after which it was considered murder to expose a child. No mention of the gods is made although it is clear that it was not considered the same as Baptism (skírn) and is not something Christians did. Preben Meulengracht Sørensen (2008, Initiation Between Two Worlds: Structure and Symbolism in Pre-Christian Scandinavian Religion) proposed that the sprinkling and the naming were structural counterparts to each other, that the water symbolically separates the child and is followed by the name-giving which correspondingly aggregates the child into human society (this is using Arnold van Gennep's terminology, which was originally articulated in French).
If you're not able to verify things with primary sources I recommend against Googling this. As one of the few well-attested heathen rituals in the sagas, a lot of modern people have done things based on it, but since there is so little detail, people have had to fill in the gaps with either guesses or things of personal significance to them. That's great and I encourage it, but some of that has now been projected backwards in time so that "The VIKINGS used to do this exactly THIS way (etc)" and it's all a bunch of:
Tumblr media
Sørensen suggests that some kind of divination may have occurred based on Helgakviða Hundingsbana I but simultaneously points out that it's such a special occasion in the poem that we can't generalize from it. He also points out that customs around birth are known from later folklore but that while some of it is probably pre-Christian it's impossible to tell the difference between what is and isn't. He cites the Barsel entry of Kulturhistorisk leksikon for nordisk middelalder fra vikingtid til reformasjonstid by Edvard Gotfredsen and "I livets skeden: Om passageriter i fornskandinavisk religion" by Britt-Mari Näsström, a chapter in Plats och Praxis: Studier av nordisk förkristen ritual. The latter is not accessible to me. Gotfredsen's entry has a lot more about the actual birthing process than about the newborn though it does mention that the pan-Scandinavian practice of the community serving food to the mother and birth-helpers after giving birth was called Nornagreytur ('norns' porridge') in the Faroe Islands, citing Vår gamle trolldomsmedisin by Ingjald Reichborn-Kjennerud. That work is also inaccessible to me, but thankfully it is documented by Karen Bek-Pedersen in Norns in Old Norse Mythology; I'll link to the Google Books preview rather than retype it: https://books.google.com/books?id=m1xwDwAAQBAJ&pg=PT70&lpg=PT70&dq=nornagreytur&source=bl&ots=bsYHs-FY9Z&sig=ACfU3U0-cM9DMcJgxmtY0-ESc-alMckx7Q&hl=is&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiPgdO6rdP4AhWeW_EDHZFqCFEQ6AF6BAgnEAM#v=onepage&q&f=false

Viking age axe, found earlier this year in Hedmark, Norway. In the immediate vicinity of this axe there has also been found another axe, a spear and a sword, suggesting an overplowed burial site.

My Viking garment patterns so far for guidance on how to make them: on my top right are the Hedeby/Haithabu/Kievan Rus’ pants (waistband; lower legs [both short and long]; front and back crotch gussets; and baggy upper legs) and the Viborg shirt (folded top [including for lining]; front and back aprons; square sleeve gussets; and sleeves). As for the Viborg shirt, it was initially difficult to measure the pattern; but I got it down eventually through cms. The Hedeby/Rus’ pants were easier to draft, though. #vikings #vikingreenactment #viborgshirt #vikingcosplay #experimentalarchaeology #vikinggarments #hedebypants #NordicIronAge #livinghistory #vikingpants #vikingtid #vikingage https://www.instagram.com/p/B_DBaVHFncT/?igshid=w61lzutf02wl

This is a gilded silver object we found earlier this season in Hedmark, Norway, within a cone of viking age finds indicating an overplowed grave.
We do not have an exact ID for this item, but several prominent Norwegian archaeologists have alluded to it being the end of a a manuscript pointer, a so called aestel. The anglo-saxon style of ornamentation seems to support this hypothesis. There is only one known aestel found in Norway, a golden one unearthed on the site of a viking longhouse manor in Borg, Lofoten. There are very few aestels known in the world, most of which are believed to have been commissioned by King Alfred the Great, King of Wessex 871 - 886, and first King of England 886 - 899. Alfred’s aestels were gifted along with his translation of Pope Gregorius’ book Pastoral Care, as part of a project to improve education among the clergy after his unification of England. His translation still stands to this day as the oldest known book written in English. For all his accomplishments, Alfred’s reign was also marked by constant ravaging of viking northmen, and it is tempting to speculate that the aestel might have been brought here as loot from a raid on the English coast.

Gullkrona
flickr
Gullkrona by Bjørn Normann jr.
