Eurovision 2009 - Number 43 - Dali - "Everyday"
youtube
This is not Dali's first attempt to get into Eurovision. It's their fourth, but it is their first entry into the Polish national final Piosenka dla Europy. They're a band from Belarus, so it won't be a surprise to hear that their first three attempts were in that national final. Those songs were entered in the years 2006-2008. 2009 marks the fourth year in a row in a national final, not a feat many other singers and bands achieve.
Founded in Minsk in 2005, they started as the backing band for singer Irina Dorofeeva, but were going it alone from 2006 onwards. Their main singer and song-writer is Viktar Rudenka. He's also the only original member of the band left as in 2008 the entirety of the band was replaced by new musicians. This also coincides with the band's (Viktar's) move to Poland. As well as some politically charged statements by Viktar, notably about the death penalty in Belarus. It's hard not to see the move as an artistic exile.
Everyday continues a trend the band have had in that their national final entries have been predominantly in English while their regular output had been in Belarusian or Russian. It falls squarely in the pop-punk/boy band bucket that while not the most popular Eurovision genre, had nearly always found some representation in the national finals for the past five years or so. There was certainly a sub-demographic within Eurovision fandom that was very keen for an act like Dali to break through.
Viktar's vocals are pop-punk appropriate, i.e. not the best, but in terms of energy and attitude, he's got it and that would have contributed to their popularity across the Russian speaking countries. However, while Poland has a good amount of Russian comprehension, it is not Russian speaking. Although Dali got fifth place with the jury, the public placed them second to last. Overall, they ended seventh of the ten songs.
The band stuck together for a few more years and managed to tour other parts of Europe including performances in London. However they finally split in 2012 when a new band, with a different style, emerged from the ashes. That band was Rostany, a Belarusian EDM band. Whatever politics had been around in 2008 had now been put behind Viktar as his new band rose in popularity, although they're still very clear that Belarus is not Russia.
They've toured all around Europe, especially in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. They've also toured China twice. In 2015, Viktar and Rostany returned to the Belarusian national final for his fifth attempt to get into Eurovision. This is Rostany's 2015 single Daisy Chain

Lukashenko declares himself 'winner' of Belarus’s presidential vote blasted as sham

Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko declared himself president for his seventh consecutive term in an election on Jan. 26 internationally deemed as neither free nor fair.
The Belarusian Election Commission claimed that Lukashenko “won” 86.82% of the vote, followed by regime-approved and little-known candidates like Sergey Syrankov with 3.21% or Oleg Gaidukevich with 2.02%. Some 3.6% of the ballots voted “against all."
“You can congratulate the Republic of Belarus, we have elected a president,” said Igor Karpenko, the head of the electoral commission, early on Jan. 27. The commission claimed a 85.7% turnout.
Lukashenko, the country’s leader since 1994 and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest ally, has long been accused of staging fraudulent elections in Belarus.
In 2020, during the last presidential election, Lukashenko maintained power despite the country’s most prominent opposition leader, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, receiving popular support. The now-exiled opposition leader said she won with 60% of the vote.
Following the fabricated results in 2020, mass protest erupted in Minsk but were ultimately quelled with the support of Russia. According to the Belarusian human rights group Viasna, over 60,000 citizens have been detained for political reasons since the 2020 election.
Tsikhanouskaya responded to the election results on Jan. 26 by condemning the legitimacy of the vote and rejecting Lukashenko as president.
“These are not elections but a ‘special operation’ to illegally cling to power. Lukashenko, propped up by Putin, holds 9 million Belarusians hostage, drags us into war, and betrays our sovereignty,” she wrote on X.
“He does not represent Belarus. The regime must end its repressions, release political prisoners, and be held accountable for its crimes. Belarusians will prevail!"
Kaja Kallas, the EU’s chief diplomat, echoed similar sentiments on X on Jan. 25.
“Lukashenko has clung to power for 30 years. Tomorrow, he’ll reappoint himself in yet another sham election. This is a blatant affront to democracy. Lukashenko doesn’t have any legitimacy,” she said.
Notably, Lukashenko declined to invite a mission from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to observe the country’s presidential election.
On Nov. 22, state-run news outlet Belta reported that Lukashenko may completely shut down the internet during the 2025 presidential elections if protests similar to those in 2020 arise.
“If this (the protests) happens again, we will shut the internet down completely,” Lukashenko said, admitting that internet shutdowns during the 2020 protests were carried out with his approval.
While Belarus has not directly participated in the war against Ukraine, it has allowed the Kremlin to use its territory as a staging ground for its operations. The country is also reportedly hosting Russian tactical nuclear arms on its territory.
Photos of jailed Belarusian opposition leader appear after almost 2 years of no news
Photos and a video of Viktar Babaryka were published by blogger Raman Pratasevich on Jan. 8 after the jailed Belarusian opposition leader was held incommunicado since February 2023.

From Freedom News September 24, 2024 The frontman of Hate To State and Chaliera died less than two years after a stint of political imprisonment Viktar became interested in punk as a teenager, during the Soviet era. In the early 1990s, he went to Germany and lived there in a squat occupied by punks, participating in the local punk movement. After returning to Minsk, Mao brought not only impressions, but also knowledge about the punk scene in Europe. Mao wanted to play a style called crust punk, which is usually rough and heavy music with radical social lyrics. In 1997, Viktar Žarkievič became the founder and lyricist of the Minsk punk band Hate To State, which performed alongside outstanding figures of Belarusian rock of that time. The band existed until 2000, and they played the last concert together with the group Pravakacyja, in which [prominent fiction writer] Alhierd Bacharevič was the singer. After that, Viktar sporadically played in various bands and engaged in lesser-known projects. [He also worked for Navinki, a 1998-2003 satirical journal founded by members of anarchist group Čyrvony Žond – tr.] Žarkievič was detained by Belarusian political police in September 2022. During the detention, Viktor was severely beaten. In addition, they broke a frying pan on his head and forced him to drag the fridge door, which had punk and anarchist stickers and magnets from different years, into the police station. The man’s friends say that his health and morale were greatly undermined by 30 days in Akreścina detention centre. He complained of pain even after being released from prison. Žarkievič was fired from his job at the construction site and, at least at first, was not hired for a new one due to political charges. Victor had trouble making ends meet and often complained to his friends about his health problems. Viktar ‘Mao’ Žarkievič died on September 22, 2024 in his apartment in Minsk. According to acquaintances, his heart gave out. A poem Mao would read at the start of every Hate To State gig, here taken from a 2013 reunion: Dictatorship is foundation of fascism, Stalin also loved dictatorship. Let a moron walk under the flag of totalitarianism With a hockey stick in hand. The main enemy of liberty is the state. It’s as simple as physical training: Discipline is foundation of fascism, Anarchy is the mother of order! Tags: obituaryBelarusanarcho-punk

As the news that Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny had died in prison on Friday spread, thousands of people around the world expressed their grief at his loss and their anger at the Russian authorities. Now, many are trying to understand the broader implications of his death. Belarusian writer and recipient of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature Svetlana Alexievich spoke with the Belarusian newspaper Nasha Niva about the potential impact Navalny’s death could have on political prisoners in Belarus, its implications for authoritarian leaders’ impunity, and its far-reaching consequences for global power dynamics. Meduza is sharing some of her thoughts.
On Alexey Navalny’s death
The whole world is in mourning today. I looked at Meduza’s newsfeed and saw reactions from people all over the world: politicians, writers, musicians. Everyone is stunned. Of course, there’s shock over the level of cruelty that we’ve allowed evil to reach. [Evil] has spread to such an extent that it’s doing things we couldn’t even imagine. Although we knew these authorities’ nature.
The most frightening thing for Belarus is that we have almost 2,000 political prisoners, and our leaders are also in prison. Maybe someone is in a ShIZO now. We’ve heard nothing from Maryia Kalesnikava or Viktar Babaryka. We know nothing about Mikalai Statkevich. And there’s this feeling that at any moment, we could hear that the worst has happened to them.
Dictators learn from each other. Navalny’s death has opened up an abyss of impunity for dictators around the world (they’re all in cahoots), especially in Belarus. Now, anything could happen. The authorities have been given this leeway. As it turns out, they can do anything — and the world will be helpless. The country will be helpless. The authorities will go unpunished. That’s what’s truly frightening.
There’s hope that after Navalny’s murder, the world will see that Putin, like Hitler, is capable of dragging the world into a world war; he won’t stop. We need to help Ukraine as much as possible, or we’ll have to pay an even higher price. A new Hitler with new technologies will be more terrifying than what we’ve seen from history.
On Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Yulia Navalnaya’s meeting
These are touching images. It made me think: men are the ones fighting, but war kills women most of all. Imagine Yulia’s soul — a beautiful woman, Navalny’s loyal friend. Or Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s, who for so long has had no idea what’s happening with her husband. That’s why women face a more terrible war.
On Russian President Vladimir Putin
He’s a cruel person. He’s a KGB man, not a politician, so he’s capable of anything. It would seem unthinkable to kill one’s main opponent, the main opposition figure, a politician. A powerful person wouldn’t consider such a thing; they’d value a strong opponent. A weak person does what we’ve seen.
