Name: Virika Akhter

Age: 17

Info: Virika’s family has roots in Bangladesh, but has lived near Morning Rapids for several generations. Out of all of the characters she has quite possibly the best relationship with her parents. Sure, they butt heads sometimes, but what family with a teenage child doesn’t? They’re very supportive of her in all her endeavors that don’t put her in harms way. Her family is Muslim, and her faith is a source of comfort for her. She has a sibling-like relationship with her father’s apprentice Johann, who is a few years older than her and lives close by. The two have known each other pretty much since Virika was born. Virika is very outgoing and has had a lifelong interest in fantasy and adventure media. She longs for adventure and is eager to get out and take matters into her own hands, although when she senses actual danger she gets nervous. She was born on the same year as Alabaster, but a few months earlier. Virika is straight and cis, but very much an ally to her friends. She has special interests in many of the fantasy series’ that she likes, and her room is decorated with posters. Despite being very outgoing and social she hasn’t had very many close friendships. She wouldn’t describe her experiences as intentional exclusion, she just always felt like she was no-one’s first choice. She’s like that one person that everyone knows and likes but that no-one knows on a deeper level. Her most prized possession is a wooden replica of the rapier carried by one of her favorite characters. She received it from her parents as a gift a few years ago, they commissioned it from a family friend, Johann’s father, who does woodwork. It’s very fragile so Virika rarely brings it out of the house, but it sits on a pedestal and is the first thing you notice when entering her room. She’s not interested in doing combat sports herself, she just likes it because it represents both the character she adores so much and her family’s love for her. It’s also very pretty to look at. 

Relationships with other characters:

Alabaster: Basically Virika’s adopted sibling at this point. Despite their differences they get along very well and understand each other on a deeper level. Virika started trying to befriend Alabaster as soon as they came into town, and to her surprise it actually worked! Now they are almost never seen apart from each other.

Niklas: Virika thinks Niklas is one of the coolest people to ever exist. First of all, he’s just a very nice person who doesn’t mind Virika’s energy and actually matches or surpasses it on most days. Second of all, he knows swordfighting! How cool is that? He’s showed her a bunch of moves that Virika has come across in her books but didn’t understand, so that Virika can now visualize all the swordfighting scenes much easier. Virika isn’t as gullible as Alabaster when it comes to Niklas’s ghost stories, and she calls him out for them if they get too ridiculous. All in good fun, of course. She usually calls him by his nickname, “Laszlo”.

Jae-Seong: Virika thinks Jae-Seong is also very cool (she has a tendency to think that everything and everyone are super cool) although she’s not as close with him as he is with Niklas. She does try to make sure that he feels listened to when making decisions, which is something that he seems to appreciate, because he’s also started voicing his opinions and advice to her without being directly asked. Virika is very happy about this, her friend group is starting to come together!

Kioni: Virika and Kioni have both had their fair share of difficulties with their peers, and it’s something they can relate to each other with. They’re both discovering the wonders of close friendships together. Virika is very supportive of all her friends, which is something Kioni both needs and appreciates. They’re also autistic bffs. They both like fantasy stuff, although where Virika’s favorite trope are cool fighters with a heart of gold, Kioni likes wizards and witches. They’ll probably start up a DnD club together and get really into it.

Benicio: Virika and Benicio make up a great team. Virika has great ideas and Benicio is great at swaying other people to his side with his words. If Virika is the leader of the group, Benicio is her right hand man. They’re also good at coming up with strategies together, and they share a liking for funky colorful clothes.  They could probably wrap the whole school around their little fingers if they tried hard enough.  If Virika and Kioni founded a DnD club, Benicio would be first in line to join. They’re a theatre kid, after all.

Liv: Virika has known Liv since they were children. They were friends in kindergarten, but as they aged they started moving in such different circles that they just kind of drifted apart. They were still always aware of the other one’s existence and had some friendly interactions over the years in shared classes. Now they’ve suddenly become friends again, it’s weird but also pretty nice. Liv and Virika are both very idealistic, and they have very similar views on the world and what’s right and wrong. They’re trying to catch up again and look into each others’ interests in an effort to not drift apart again.

Trivia: Her parents own a bakery, which serves as the squad’s favorite hangout spot. Virika’s name used to be Aamaya, but I didn’t want two of my protagonists’ names to start with the same letter. In the first story I wrote for them she saved Alabaster from getting torn apart by a monster. In that story she was a lot more blunt and straightforward, her personality was like a mix of Niklas and Liv. In the second story she’d already become the girl she is now, although she still had her original name. In all iterations of the story, she was Alabaster’s first friend.

Character bio: Jae-Seong Sa

Name: Jae-Seong Sa

Age: 17

Pronouns: he/they

Info: Jae-Seong is the same age as Niklas and is biromantic and on the asexual spectrum. He doesn’t have a specific label, but demi is pretty close. His parents moved to Morning Rapids from South Korea before he was born, and they used to live in the part of the forest that was technically inside the city but didn’t have anything separating it from the forest around the city. They both had jobs in the city but had lived their entire lives in a rural area and wanted their child to be able to experience that instead of crowded city streets. One day they went out into the city to get medicine and didn’t return. There was an investigation but all they found were a few blood trails in the forest. After this Jae-Seong was placed into the care of his parents’ friend, who wasn’t the best choice for the carer of a traumatized child, not by a long shot. He was one of those “if you show emotions everyone will see it as a sign of weakness and use it against you” -types, and Jae-Seong ended up adopting that mindset, although a much less outwardly destructive version of it. This carer would go on to die as well, due to his own recklessness. Jae-Seong was also there, but was spared. They are enrolled in some of the same classes as Niklas, but don’t aim to become a city guard. He wants to become a ranger: the job would include making sure that everything is well in the areas outside of Morning Rapids. It’s a very solitary job, but then he could be in the forest. He feels most at home there, no cramped streets or constant buzzing of people. One could say that his relationship to the woods is much like that of a seaman to the ocean: he loves and respects it but won’t be as naive to call it his friend. They know that it cannot be tamed and might someday eat him alive. Still, he can’t stay away from it. He also secretly still holds out hope somewhere deep inside that he could find some signs of his parents to get closure. He knows they can’t be alive but not knowing what happened to them gnaws at him. Jae-Seong is very slow to warm up to people, but he’s loyal to those he trusts until the bitter end. He holds up a phlegmatic facade but when he finally warms up to people, it starts to slip. He has very keen senses and enjoys small things that others might not notice, like distant birdcalls and the smell of pinesap and saltwater. You might find him just sitting silently with his eyes closed, and if you copy him you might find yourself noticing the things he does. His most prized possession is a dagger that he inherited from his parents. He can use it to defend himself and others if needed, but mostly he thinks of it as a good luck charm. 

Relationships to other characters:

Alabaster: Jae-Seong thinks Alabaster is pretty nice. They don’t push him to talk about things he doesn’t want to talk about. It’s also comforting to know that there are other people who are just as clueless about social interactions as he is. It’s something they can relate to each other with, both of them are awkward as hell, Jae-Seong just masks it with an air of aloofness. Alabaster, however, has no wilderness survival skills, and Jae-Seong is determined to help them learn so that they don’t go and get themselves killed. Jae-Seong isn’t sure they could take any more of that happening.

Virika: Jae-Seong is a bit worried for Virika, as she’s an open book when it comes to feelings. She also has no survival skills, except the occasional tidbits she’s learned from adventure books. However she has shown herself to be capable in many other ways, and Jae-Seong respects and trusts her, although that doesn’t mean he’s willing to tell her his life story when prompted. Virika doesn’t push it too much though, and she’s been very nice to him since day one. She also seems to appreciate his knowledge on survival and combat, and Jae-Seong must admit that it feels nice to know that someone respects his skills and looks to him for advice.

Niklas: Niklas can be a lot. At first Jae-Seong was annoyed by his antics, and he still is to an extent, but not in an entirely negative way. He’s afraid that getting close to others could potentially end in a repeat of his past, yet he can’t bring himself to try and distance himself from Niklas or the others anymore. They’ve instead decided to makes sure that nothing like that can happen again. Niklas’s recklessness is a source of bickering for the two. However Jae-Seong must admit that they admire how easily Niklas seems to adapt to and find joy in life. Jae-Seong is immune to Niklas’s stories, he knows there are things in the forest that are much scarier than anything Niklas has come up with.

Kioni: Surprising literally everyone else, Jae-Seong and Kioni become a lot more talkative with each other. They both have a shared appreciation of nature. Kioni focuses more on the different plants and their healing/poisonous properties and how to harness them, whereas Jae-Seong focuses on more hands-on things, like how to deal with a viper bite and knowing when an area is about to become dangerous. Their different paths of life have led to them having wildly different knowledge about the same things, and they swap that knowledge often. As a result Kioni now knows about the Silence and Jae-Seong knows the history of the usage of different plants in medicine. They actually have a few inside jokes, and Jae-Seong enjoys talking to her. 

Benicio: Benicio is... kind of an enigma to Jae-Seong to be honest. He not only enjoys talking to strangers, but knows the ins and outs of conversation and can sway people to his side simply with his words, which is baffling to Jae-Seong. He knew people could do that, but before it had only been people who he didn’t think had the best intentions. Benicio, however, seems genuinely nice and helpful, and he does have a very calming presence. Jae-Seong doesn’t quite know what to think of him yet, though.

Liv: Jae-Seong likes Liv well enough, although he can’t understand how she can like the city as much as she does. The things he finds unbearable don’t seem to bother them in the slightest, in fact Liv seems to seek them out on purpose. They can however relate to each other in the sense that they’re both distrustful yet fiercely loyal. Their different approaches to situations compliment each other, as Jae-Seong knows when to use stealth and Liv knows when to be confrontational. Despite this, she doesn’t go charging into physical danger, instead using her words and getting out if that doesn’t work, which gives Jae-Seong some peace of mind. On the few occasions that the group has gone camping, Jae-Seong has found Liv’s complaints about the forest quite funny. 

Trivia:

Jae-Seong was inspired by two favorite tropes of mine that often overlap: the highly skilled, melancholic character who acts aloof but is actually just afraid to get close to people due to their past, and the character that just really likes the forest. Most of my favorite characters are at least one of these things. Most of my favorite characters who fit the first trope don’t really get the chance to recover from their past experiences or heal, so I wanted to try and write a character who would get that chance. In the original story they starred in, Jae-Seong had some really cool moments that I hope to adapt to the story’s changes. Out of all of the character bios this is the most spoilery one, but since the story is so early in development and so few people see these, I figured that I would let myself infodump about the brain blorbo. His surname, “Sa” translates to 4, which is a symbol of bad luck in Korean culture. Most of the characters’ names were chosen based on their meanings because I love researching them.

My oc Virika redeisgn bc her old one wasnt enough for me. I gave her fish nets bc i can and they have holes bc her quirk fucks up her outfits lol. Her tail, helmet and collar thing was made by her brothers friend who owed her a favor. The tail helps with sensor and protection from behind, helmet helps hides her identity bc it can darken and hide her face. The cat ears are made as lights incase its too dark. And the collar... im still figuring that out but its not leaving huney.

What I imagine Steven and Connie's daughter to be like. Her design and bits of her personality were inspired by Mabel from Gravity Falls. At the time of the story, she would be about 7-8 years old, I'm thinking, still thinking about how the timeline would be set up. I'm just posting up pics and designs I thought up really. I'm gonna try and post up art like every Tues and Friday. So onto to some head-canons about her: Virika is a Hindi name meaning "Bravery." Her nickname is "Vivi." Her "middle name" was, of course, given to her by Garnet. Just as Steven was "Cutie Pie", his daughter would of course be "Cutie-2"! Legally, her last name is indeed "Maheswaran-Universe." Connie and Steven didn't really take each other last names when they married, just kept both of their names and they wanted their daughter to have both names too. Although Steven is no longer resentful of how his father raised him, he still wants Vivi to have all the things he didn't really experience as a child. Namely, normal human child things. So she goes to school, lives in a proper house, goes to the Doctor on a regular basis and all that jazz! But that doesn't mean she's completely sheltered from Gem stuff either! Since the time she was a baby, Steven and Connie bring Vivi down to Beach City for her summer Vacation from school! She plays Video Games with Amethyst, goes exploring Little Homeworld and learning about Gem culture with Pearl and even is apart of Ruby's scout trope! (She already has 5 merit badges!) On her 5 birthday, Pearl knitted a "Crystal Gem" sweater for Vivi (which she never takes off). Like Steven was in her early youth, she optimistic, friendly, extroverted and bubbly. Even more so since Steven and Connie make sure to shelter her from some of the more traumatic facts of Steven's life. That's not to say they'll never tell her but they're waiting until she's older. She's pretty much met all of the Crystal Gems, including the Diamonds and Spinel at one point. She finds the Diamonds to be a bit intimidating but she still loves them. They are her great aunts after all! She, of course, loves Spinel the best and absolutely considers Spinel to be her "Best Friend." She even tried styling her hair after hers so they could be "Hair buddies." And she absolutely adores her cousins! Being an only child, they're like her older brothers but she wishes she could see them more often.
