Kashmir Hill’s “Your Face Belongs to Us”

This Friday (September 22), I'm (virtually) presenting at the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy. Hill is a fitting chronicler here. Clearview first rose to prominence – or, rather, notoriety – with the publication of her 2020 expose on the company, which had scraped more than a billion facial images from the web, and then started secretly marketing a search engine for faces to cops, spooks, private security firms, and, eventually, repressive governments:

Hill's original blockbuster expose was followed by an in-depth magazine feature and then a string more articles, which revealed the company's origins in white nationalist movements, and the mercurial jourey of its founder, Hoan Ton-That:

The story of Clearview's technology is an interesting one, a story about the machine learning gold-rush where modestly talented technologists who could lay hands on sufficient data could throw it together with off-the-shelf algorithms and do things that had previously been considered impossible. While Clearview has plenty of competitors today, as recently as a couple of years ago, it played like a magic trick.

That's where the more interesting story of Clearview's founding comes in. Hill is a meticulous researcher and had the benefit of a disaffected – and excommunicated – Clearview co-founder, who provided her with masses of internal communications. She also benefited from the court documents from the flurry of lawsuits that Clearview prompted.

What emerges from these primary sources – including multiple interviews with Ton-That – is a story about a move-fast-and-break-things company at the tail end of the forgiveness-not-permission era of technological development. Clearview's founders are violating laws and norms, they're short on cash, and they're racing across the river on the backs of alligators, hoping to reach the riches on the opposite bank without losing a leg.

A decade ago, they might have played as heroes. Today, they're just grifters – bullshitters faking it until they make it, lying to Hill (and getting caught out), and the rest of us. The founders themselves are erratic weirdos, and not the fun kind of weirdos, either. Ton-That – who emigrated to Silicon Valley from Australia as a teenager, seeking a techie's fortune – comes across as a bro-addled dimbulb who threw his lot in with white nationalists, MAGA Republicans, Rudy Guiliani bagmen, Peter Theil, and assorted other tech-adjascent goblins.

Meanwhile, biometrics generally – and facial recognition specifically – is a discipline with a long and sordid history, inextricably entwined with phrenology and eugenics, as Hill describes in a series of interstitial chapters that recount historical attempts to indentify the facial features that correspond with criminality and low intelligence.

These interstitials are woven into a-ha moments from Clearview's history, in which various investors, employees, hangers-on, competitors and customers speculate about how a facial-recognition system could eventually not just recognize criminals, but predict criminality. It's a potent reminder of the AI industry's many overlaps with "race-science" and other quack beliefs.

Hill also describes how Clearview and its competitors' recklessness and arrogance created the openings for shrewd civil libertarians to secure bipartisan support for biometric privacy laws, most notably Illinois' best-of-breed Biometric Information Privacy Act:

But by the end of the book, Hill makes the case that Ton-That and his competitors have gotten away with it. Facial recognition is now so easy to build that – she says – we're unlikely to abolish it, despite all the many horrifying ways that FR could fuck up our societies. It's a sobering conclusion, and while Hill holds out some hope for curbing the official use of FR, she seems resigned to a future in which – for example – creepy guys covertly snap photos of women on the street, use those pictures to figure out their names and addresses, and then stalk and harass them.

If she's right, this is Ton-That's true legacy, and the legacy of the funders who handed him millions to spend building this. Perhaps someone else would have stepped into that sweaty, reckless-grifter-shaped hole if Ton-That hadn't been there to fill it, but in our timeline, we can say that Ton-That was the bumbler who helped destroy something precious.

this ep was kind of lowkey. not really sure how i feel about the team selection being entirely determined by rank - pretty sad that karen & momoka, amongst others, probably wont get to show their actual main abilities

the teams that performed were hero, shine a light, wa da da, & run run. ranking: run run > hero ≥ wa da da > shine a light. i don't really like the song choices (songs that already have choreo for a dance round, only one non-idol dance song, plus the singers/producers for that song helped arrange all of the vocal performances? makes me wonder if the final group will be getting a LAS song) but at least theyre all in japanese this time (for the vocal & rap groups at least)

run run: good performance but i have a few gripes. 1 - why was it worth more points? they said that the choreo was harder but the whole mission was for the girls to create choreo so... i dont actually expect that the trainees on these shows are doing all the arranging and writing and choreography themselves (much less on pd japan where virtually no one has a trainee background) but the whole set up of the mission kind of says the quiet part loud, you know? 2 - the distribution was a complete mess. loved joa as the center but the rest were basically backup dancers...for a choreo that theyre ostensibly creating themselves the difference in screentime between each person just doesnt make sense. and that was reflected in all of the ranks apart from yuuki & yurara i think. storyline: i found the koto/yuki storyline pretty meh. joa did actually do better than both of them so...? still, in another series this wouldve had a massive conflict edit & im glad pdj doesn't really do that. sad mitsuki & serina didn't get much screentime, i think mitsuki should've gone for antifragile actually, she needed to be on a team where the styling would've worked with her & allowed her to show more of a charming side on stage (friend that i watched LOVED her in cheer up, made me pause to figure out who the "gorgeous regina george lookalike" was.)

hero: ando yui is my daughter but i have to admit that she has a tendency towards shouting some notes. still, i feel like she has a ton of potential and im glad that she got to redeem herself after the audition. tsuzumi is basically in and she 100% knows it, so it's interesting to see how she's dealing with it. more than anyone else in the top it seems to really be impacting her, but she also seems to have a lot of close friends on the show who understand & are supporting her. to be honest, i usually don't like contestants like mayu but...idk. i see a lot in her but im not sure why. it seems like voters are starting to get serious so her rank has dropped a lot but i i'll miss her when she's eliminated. i hope there's some opportunity for her beyond the show.

wa da da: kind of sick that no one chose wa da da 😭 the stage was pretty messy in my opinion but mana did great, she's such a performer. personally ranka isnt one of my picks but i like her intensity a lot & she definitely deserved her rank. i don't think this is her moment exactly but i could see her being recruited somewhere after this. she would suit a kind of dramatic vibe. karen is interesting to me because while she doesn't dance well i found that she really fit the stage. i also love her attitude. there's no way she won't rise but im not sure that itll be enough. last and least,

shine a light: im a big jo1 fan but i knew this wasn't gonna go great from the outset. the energy of the original song is part of what makes it so good so the fact that they removed that.....i also think it's kind of notable that hina said that she didn't want it to be a ballad and was kind of steamrolled........anyways. we saw the performance. i've always said that i wanted hazuki to get more screentime & establish herself and this was her chance but...rip. from the second her voice cracked it was over for the whole team. every single person messed up except for hina. i know that this wasn't a super strong vocal group but it's so sad that they did the worse they've ever done on stage. i expect hina's rank to continue to rise, and hazuki in particular will fall (not because she was the worse but because she has the smallest fanbase & isnt insulated from mistakes like some of the top contestants). curious about what will happen with chiharu because honestly...no one really expected her to sing super well and she was gorgeous so. we'll see

member commentary

change is always possible but this is my stable top 4. rino & ran's teams weren't in this episode but it's a very good sign that rino still got screentime singing well & being a good leader. not thrilled that her rank dropped (14 → 17) and there are a lot of strong contenders in the early teens right now. in truth, i think some of them would be a much better fit for a spin off project (which have much higher success rates than the ones from korean produce) & rino would make more sense in top 11 but that's neither here nor there.

mana, as i said earlier did sooooo well in wadada, although im curious as to what she would've picked had she been given a real choice. im hoping her rank will rise - she didn't get a push in this ep but she was significantly more visible than a lot of her teammates so fingers crossed.

serina is just a good [potential] idol. i was surprised that she went for dance since her vocals are what i noticed first but she pulled off run run well. i wouldve picked shine a light or even antifragile for her though. unfortunately she got very little screentime & storyline but i'm sure run run will win so maybe that 20k will help maintain her spot.

call me crazy but im so so sure that these three will be recruited by lapone for a gg after the show. with the top 11 having skewing less cute im hoping that this becomes a reality bc these three fit eachother more than they fit momona/nano/ran/rin/etc. oda aruha (and maybe moro anon) would be here too but alas.

people i'd like to have seen in this ep

rin is riding a wave right now and she needs momentum to stay top 11. looking at the ranks now, kokona dropped 10 places (19 → 29) 🙃 rinon & ayano are fine, but i wanted to see them keep momentum as well. i like akiyama ema for some reason but to survive she desperately needs screentime and a good performance. I'm even more worried about tsukushi - her dropping from 18th to 31st after doing incredibly well is kind of insane. what i've said about tsukushi needing a storyline in the past still stands. i can already tell that her part in bijin will be great but with rinon & keiko im not sure what her screentime potential is.

no surprises here, although im not sure what the voting has been reduced to? if it's only 5 i'd have to go with mana, rino, rin, serina, and then alternate kokona, yui, and mayu. i know that the "this person is safe so i wont vote for them" logic is flawed but i can't help it. good thing intl fans cant vote so this isn't a real concern! 🤪 /s

ep 6 semi-realistic top 11

only change is that i replaced kokona with joa. i have to say, im not thrilled about how many "givens" there are this season. it's not that i dislike them but it makes for a kind of boring top 11, at least until we get to 1 & 2 pick voting. rin was a nice surprise but i think the production has been pretty mask off about their picks. interestingly, i think it might bite them in the butt that momona & kokoro in particular don't actually get that much screentime. for people who are seeing them through the show for the first time (and also dont keep up with twitter discourse) probably feel that their ranks came out of nowhere. ran has gotten good screentime but she's definitely also buoyed by her original fanbase. miu, joa, & tsuzumi have good screentime & storylines so when joa goes up to top 11 i won't be surprised. rin had a good storyline so she makes sense. ayane doesn't get very much screentime but her voice does the brunt of the work. nano is a (capable) visual pick but she doesn't have a storyline. suzu has had a fanbase since the theme song but i expect her to fall a little honestly. we'll see. keiko is new to the top 11 this ep, i hope they reveal the actual ranks this time because that will influence my thoughts. keiko has great screentime and a litle bit of storyline so her rising makes sense. kokona is interesting to me because her rank is so stable based on not very much honestly. i don't dislike her but her lack of expressiveness on stage is probably something they'll try to build a storyline out of later.

i have a lot of confidence that rino will debut elsewhere after this but in the interest of creating a group i would actually like...

LUIGI CHERUBINI'S MÉDÉE AT LA SCALA, JANUARY 26, 2024

Corinth, time out of mind. Preparations are under way for the big wedding: Créon’s daughter, Dircé, is going to marry Jason. Jason is a celebrated hero (he’s just managed to steal the Golden Fleece together with the Argonauts and everything), but he’s also carrying about two children from his previous marriage with Médée, a powerful sorceress whom he abandoned/repudiated like, seconds ago. So the thought of Médée’s inevitable anger (1), the presence of Médée’s children (2), and possibly Jason’s own unextinguished feelings for Médée (3) are tormenting Dircé more and more. (I made it a numbered list for the sake of clarity. I’d say [3] is harrowing Dircé the most). Then, out of the blue and to everyone’s astonishment, Médée herself makes her entrance. Then, moments of sheer terror; suspicion; tentative steps… How will everything turn out in the end? As far as my experience on the ground is concerned, there’s a lone crucial piece of information I need to share: this Médée as a whole was downright amazing. You should find a way to catch it live someday—either at La Scala or elsewhere (provided a revival is in the cards). That’s it. The rest is… details? It all started with director Damiano Michieletto’s subtle, crafty, and positively riveting approach. The spoken dialogue—specifically rewritten for this production by Mattia Palma—was entirely given to Médée’s children (who are non-speaking characters in the original libretto). While the content was deliberately plain and unshowy, the way those lines were delivered was revealing. It was a series of short, recorded voice-over segments; whispered, yet robustly amplified. There was a strong The Turn of the Screw vibe. (A mirror image: Miles is older than his sister Flora; it was the other way round here). I was like, OK, this is a ghost story—and that became the key to, well, everything else. First and foremost, it was a perfect match for Luigi Cherubini’s extraordinary score (and for what Michele Gamba and the orchestra were doing from the outset, as well).

It was essentially a slow-moving, austere ritual parade of eerie melodies—each of those melodies pushing further and further into a blurry area where ordinary humans and ghosts aren’t that dissimilar anymore. The masterful use of dotted rhythms (which have been an emblem of the supernatural in music for centuries) was especially prominent. And there was a great deal of variety. The Ouverture—far away; somewhat dry and thin—seemed to be coming from a vintage (and maybe haunted) transistor radio. Yet much wider, heavier waves of sound were available when needed (no doubt for the thunderstorm lashing at Corinth at the beginning of Act III, and for the very finale). As a general outcome, this Médée made me think of some perfectly intact burial chamber from, say, the Old Kingdom of Egypt: a miniature replica of the world, a fictional underground environment where the soul of a single person—in this case, Médée—can relive the truly essential parts of its earthly journey, in order to be able to cross over into the afterlife. I also wish to put on record that Dircé—as portrayed, with lots of introspection and nuances, by Martina Russomanno—was an interesting character: she’s another Médée, virtually identical, only at a different stage of her life. Her extended aria with obbligato flute «Hymen! Viens dissiper une vaine frayeur» (Act I) came off as an absolute showstopper. (Another aria with an obbligato instrument [this time, a mesmerizing bassoon] was nothing short of memorable: «Ah! Nos peines seront communes», sung by Ambroisine Bré as Néris [Médée’s slave] in the middle of Act II). Finally, Marina Rebeka’s Médée… it’s complicated. It started out as a wonderful performance: unpredictable, multi-layered, genuinely creepy… I was loving every tiny bit of it. But it was cut short at the end of Act I; due to illness, Claire de Monteil had to step in for Act II and Act III. It’s not like I didn’t appreciate Claire de Monteil’s singing style or something. It’s more of, I couldn’t overcome the interruption. My Médée was Marina Rebeka. It was fixed by then; my imagination wouldn’t make any switch from that. That’s one reason why I’m already waiting for this specific Médée to somehow come back.

Hiroyuki Imaishi x Odio キルラキル (Kill La Kill) c o l o r f u l Daicon V : Gainax Spirit. A Virtual Retrospective

So here we are on week three of what seems to have become a retrospective in a retrospective. However when addressing the work of Mr. Imaishi, someone who has had a huge amount of influence in the animation industry, who worked for and helped found two of the most influential studios in the industry, and are themselves something of an author in the field of animation direction it's hard not to go the extra mile. Especially when this person has worked on almost everything I adore that has come out of the medium in the last 20 years.

When I think of Mr.Imaishi of course I think of his contributions to Evangelion. He was after all the key animator on what is probably my favorite scene in EOE. Still FLCL would not be the crazy fluid masterpiece it is without Mr. Imaishi's contribution. That lead to him directing his own series. That of course being the monumental Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and that of course was a huge factor in branching off on his own and helping to found studio Trigger where he and his protege Toshio Ishizaki began work on pushing the limits of their fluid animation style the culminated in what we are taking a look at today and that is of course Kill la Kill. An anime that not only drips with a sexy style, but also tips it's head to almost every classic anime and Tokusatsu tropes it could fit into it's 25 episode run. When I think of FLCL, TTGL, and KLK I cannot help but think of them as kind of an unofficial trilogy. A coming of age narrative showing us that even tho we may never get to change the past, not to hold on to our mistakes or our grief, and push forward to forge a brighter future for ourselves. I think at the end of the day this is the message in Mr. Imaishi's work. Mr. Anno has a lot of acclaim in the west, and rightly so. However I feel like Mr. Imaishi is just as influential, and has spearheaded a movement in the industry, a style all his own, and should be seen as one of the industries major contributors world wide as he is in his home country. I urge you to seek out his work, and enjoy it on your own time, and in your own way, and maybe you will find a piece of yourself in there too, and maybe you will be inspired to push yourself to the absolute limit. November is here and its first two weeks are chock full of Belfast film activity and personal appearances.

Advance screenings in cities across North America pop up every day. The first of 10 film festivals with Belfast on their schedules starts Wednesday in Australia. Later that day, Jamie will participate on the GQ Heroes panel at Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire. The film premieres Thursday in its namesake and its creator’s hometown. We know Sir Kenneth will be attending Belfast’s premiere in Belfast; who will join him?

The new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures hosts the Hollywood premiere next Monday the 8th, and the KCET Cinema Series hosts an advance screening and Q&A on Tuesday the 9th in Santa Monica. I think it’s safe to say Sir Kenneth would attend the Hollywood premiere. Would he make the short drive west to answer questions in person the next day? Who will join him at either event?

Caitríona and Jamie each have talk show appearances next Thursday the 11th: Caitríona in New York with Drew Barrymore, Jamie in Los Angeles with James Corden. Will they chat in-studio or virtually? Caitríona makes a virtual appearance in Santa Barbara on Saturday the 13th on the Indie Contenders Panel at the American Film Institute Festival, and she and Jamie join Sir Kenneth that same day for a post-screening Q&A at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival — in-person or virtually?

Deadline Contenders LA happens the next day, Saturday the 14th, with Belfast’s roster still TBA. And while all this is going on, film nomination submissions close on Friday the 5th for the Screen Actors Guild, and on Monday the 15th for the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. And Belfast premieres in cinemas across North America on Friday the 12th.

So much to anticipate. So many questions to answer. As soon as I tap Post on this 1st of November morning, we can count on hearing of more activity… and on asking more “in-person or virtual” questions. Never a dull moment…

EXCLUSIVE: iHeartRadio, FlynnPictureCo., Psychopia Pictures and UpperRoom Productions have defied the pandemic to complete production on There Be Monsters, a ten-part narrative sci-fi thriller podcast. Starring are Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker‘s John Boyega and American Crime: The Assassination of Gianni Versace‘s Darren Criss. There Be Monsters is produced by Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo., Dan Bush of Psychopia Pictures and Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions, and it will be available later this year on the iHeartPodcast Network.

Boyega plays Jack Locke, a mysterious hero with a vendetta who infiltrates a Silicon Valley body hacking startup run by an enigmatic CEO Max Fuller (Criss), whose highly secretive creations promise to enhance human biology in incredible ways. Of course, every drug has a side effect.

iHeartRadio began developing this with the producers in late 2019 as part of its expanding slate of immersive PodFiction audio dramas. As the creative team was getting ready to fly to London, Atlanta and LA to record the actors in early 2020, the pandemic hit and shut them down. Despite the challenges of executing a scripted fictional podcast thriller remotely with a full cast of actors, they harnessed a completely remote technological process. Each cast member was sent a “Studio in a Box,” which included important materials from a professional studio microphone to tutorial videos – which allowed the cast to record studio quality “scripted” audio from the safety of their own homes, while still performing together. They connected virtually via teleconference across multiple continents and time zones. The director, producers and actors connect virtually daily for six hours to record – and over the course of two weeks the production captured over four hundred pages of material with twenty different actors.

“The process to develop this scripted show and the ability to capture the connection, emotions and overall dynamic between the cast members while recording remotely, from across the globe, was unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” said Conal Byrne, President of the iHeartPodcast Network.

The PodFi also stars Marley Shelton (Rampage), Clark Gregg (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Tony award nominee Sahr Ngaujah (Fela!, Patti Cake$). The series was created and directed by Dan Bush (The Vault, The Signal), who co-wrote along with Nicholas Tecosky. Boyega was the first to attach as star and producer.

“Getting to explore this format of storytelling whilst also adjusting to new methods of recording with the cast members made it an exciting process,” said Boyega. “I’m thrilled it all came together and hope audiences are just as drawn in as I was to this sci-fi thriller series.”

Of his creation, Bush said “There Be Monsters is a psychological thriller that chronicles the rise of humankind 2.0, and the disruptions to society that come with it. We chose to format this story as a scripted podcast because it is an immersive, storytelling playground.”

Flynn produces with FlynnPictureCo’s Scott Sheldon and Shelby Thomas. The company is currently in post on Disney’s Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt for July 30, 2021 release.

FlynnPictureCo. is currently in post-production on Disney’s Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, releasing July 30, 2021. Fresh on the heels of the latest Star Wars trilogy, Boyega via his UpperRoom Productions recently inked a multiyear producing deal with Netflix with a specific focus on non-English language films from West and East Africa.
