Okay, I'm sick and putting off sleeping, so here goes:
I'm learning Thai via the Automatic Language Growth (ALG) method. It's rad as fuck. Basically you watch videos that you that are just above your comprehension level. And by comprehension, I don't mean you understand all (or any) of the words or even any of the grammar - I mean you kinda can follow the message of the conversation.
As in, if someone asked you what the video was about you could say "Oh, they were talking about hair and haircuts". And you can do this as a complete beginner with no vocab knowledge because when you are shown pictures of a hair salon and then a teacher literally takes a pair of scissors and CUTS A HUGE CHUNK OF HER OWN HAIR OFF - you understand that they are talking about hair and hair cuts.
It's called comprehensible input. You should understand 60+% of the MESSAGE based on the gestures, facial expressions, pictures and other cues provided. But unlike the example I gave before you aren't supposed to think about or translate what you are hearing.
I'm making a huge mess of this. Let's start again.
Hi, I'm Zimmbs. I studied language acquisition and how children learn their first languages. The ALG method takes what we know about childhood language acquisition and applies to adults.
When children learn language/communication what they are doing is taking the weird sounds people make with their faces in one metaphorical hand, and then taking their lived experiences and growing world knowledge with their other metaphorical hand, and then smooshing the two together - hard. This gives (important, meaningful and functional) meaning to the face sounds.
Language is the mapping of symbols to concepts. Spoken language, written words, signing, gestures and pictorial communication are all symbols - because they are symbolic of something. They are nothing by themselves, they have no inherent meaning - we attach meaning to them. We decide they represent some concept or another.
When we acquire language we map our world knowledge to concepts and we map those concepts to speech sounds (the map is in our brain).
The theory is that the direct acquisition of language (symbol -> concept in our brain from our own lived experiences) is a robust and strong connection. The acquisition of language via translation (symbol in 2nd language -> symbol in 1st language -> concept) is a weak connection. That tagged on symbol has nothing to hold on to and will easily fall off.
On top of that, the brain HATES having gaps / things that don't make sense, and it LOVES patterns. When we tag another language on to our existing language the brain has no choice but to try and squish the new stuff into the patterns it already knows. Accents are our brain fitting the new language into the mouth patterns of our native language. The same happens with grammar.
How do we avoid this? ALG says to do what kids do -> form entirely new patterns from a blank slate (as much as possible). By not translating the new language into the already existing one we are denying the brain it's crutch of squishing things into places they don't belong. And it HAS to identify and learn the language's own inherent patterns.
This means so translating out loud or in our brains. No thinking. Just watch the videos and let the stories wash over you.
And yes, that means so subtitles when watching Thai series - I feel your pain on this one. Currently I watch shows on mute or I get an idea of the plot from Tumblr and then watch without subtitles.
The second part of ALG is the knowledge that language is built on a foundation of comprehension. Kids experience like 2000 hours of comprehensible input before they start talking. That's partly because their mouths are weird, but also because they need to establish a very solid language base in their brains (internal symbolic representations of concepts) BEFORE they can externally form the symbols themselves.
Put these two things together and you get a language acquisition approach that prioritises listening and comprehension, and the truly spontaneous production of spoken language. It takes time (sometimes a long time) for the sounds to come out of your mouth automatically without thinking or forcing it (this is referred to as the silent period). But you are much more likely to be producing symbols true to that language - rather than ones influences by the patterns of your other language, and symbols that are directly and robustly attached to your own internalised concepts.
As for me, I'm 225 hours in, I'm still a beginner, but I am finding the process so rewarding! Being able to watch and get the gist of native content is still 600+ hours away. But I can already understand snippets of conversations when I'm at the Thai supermarket. I trust the process (also it helps that I understand the science) and I am soooooo looking forward to watching my shows without subtitles in the relatively near future.
The aim is to consume 3 hours of comprehensible input per day - which is hard right now because I still need to watch the videos. But as my comprehension grows I am able to listen to more without having to look at the screen. Also there is NO wrote learning, no vocab drills, just entertainment into your brain.
Anyway,
Here's a 7 minute video about the method:
youtube
And this is Comprehensible Thai's youtube channel:
Jon, who run's Comprehensible Thai has a playlist with videos about the method. There are playlists take you from absolute beginner (B0), right up to advanced.
You'll see comments on the video with people saying what % of the MESSAGE of the video they understood (this is not vocab or grammar). Jon uses these to work out what order the videos should come in in the playlist - don't compare your understanding to these comments. You might understand 60% of the message and someone may have written that they understood 90% - but Jon may have moved the video to later in the playlist because people were rating it too high. Also if you want to partake in the % ratings of the videos, flick Jon as email and he'll tell you what he needs you to do / keep in mind.
Dreaming Spanish uses the same method and writes about it here:
You can read David Long's writing's about it here (he took over from Dr Marvin Brown who pioneered this method in Bangkok in the 80s):
And you can read Dr Marvin Brown's writings here:
So many words. Apologies and much love to anyone who read them <3. I'm going to sleep now.
Hi, love your posts about Thai language!! If you don't mind me asking, I wanted to know where do you learn Thai from and also where do you study Thai culture :) I want to start learning Thai this year, but I don't know many courses online and also don't know where I can learn more in depth about the country's culture. Thanks❤️
Hiya and thank you 💕 but also-
Tumblr media
I'm quite possibly the worst person you could ask for advice since I'm not enrolled for any course or anything 🥴 I'll link you this previous ask I answered about how I learn Thai, though!
Other than that, maybe @airenyah can give you pointers about the courses she does, @zimmbzon can tell you about how they're learning Thai via ALG (automatic language growth), and @recentadultburnout 's posts about Thai culture are always super interesting!
Good luck, have fun, and you're always welcome to ask or dm me and surely also other learners like the ones I mentioned. ☺️

The Heart Killers' Colors ? - Ep. 2
I only have two episodes to go off of, but I'm still trying to see the colors in The Heart Killers, and even though I'm confident that Fadel is a Black Brooder, the others are up in the air.
Tumblr media
I still feel secure that Bison is a Red Rascal (warm), but I think he intentionally hid it this episode.
Tumblr media
Bison was blue most of this episode around Kant.
Tumblr media
And he just kept getting lighter.
Tumblr media
But @visualtaehyun mentioned that when they first met, Kant stated that Bison needed to let him be in control, so I think Bison is faking a color and a personality because even though he wears blue, the red is still there, right at his core.
Tumblr media
And once Kant participates in the dancing competition solely because Bison tells him to, the red is back.
Tumblr media
In The Taming of the Shrew, Bianca (Bison's character) is not the titular "shrew" to be tamed; therefore, she is never tamed. In fact, Bianca becomes more assertive and manipulative throughout the story.
Tumblr media
Because Lucentio is whipped.
Tumblr media
So we know who is really in control and pulling the strings in every version of this story. It's the Red Rascal.
Tumblr media
So now on to Kant, who is supposedly a (Dark) Blue Boy.
Tumblr media
The blue would make sense because being whipped implies an extreme level of loyalty, but much like Bison, I think Kant is intentionally hiding it.
Tumblr media
The entire plot is based on Kant trying to swindle his way to freedom via exposing Bison and Fadel with any means possible, so of course he wouldn't show his real color.
Tumblr media
But, once again, IF Kant's real color is dark blue, it's interesting where and when his and Bison's color emerge.
Tumblr media
Kant was dark blue in the first episode before he entered this deal for his freedom.
Tumblr media
And he was feeling Bison's red.
Tumblr media
So Kant, in his true color (IF it's his true color) likes Bison's assertiveness and aggressiveness.
Tumblr media
Even if he doesn't realize it, the (dark) Blue Boy is following the Red Rascal's lead.
Tumblr media
Which leads to Kant's wild friend who wears wild (printed) clothes.
Tumblr media
Style is supposed to be a (light) Blue Boy.
Tumblr media
Which means, just like Kant, he would be loyal and committed (to the bit).
Tumblr media
But I initially thought Style was flesh/skin, which might seem odd since that's not a color, but I think it is very important.
Tumblr media
The reason I'm confident Fadel is a Black Brooder is because he always wears black and he is hellbent on keeping his secrets, which the black color symbolizes.
Tumblr media
So I don't think Director Jojo just wants to show Dunk's body (which I wouldn't fault him if he did because . . . well, Dunk's fine). I think Style, with his crop tops and eagerness to take off his clothes at any given moment, represents openness and vulnerability, which are two things Fadel struggles with.
Tumblr media
And this is also why I think this is an intentional choice by Cinematographer Rath to light each scene as it was: the sauna is warm with Style baring himself for Fadel and exposing all his perfections (and flaws) transitions to the locker room being dark so Fadel can sneak up on Style and threaten him about his secret.
Tumblr media
And it all ends with Fadel, in his darkness, turning to the warmth.
Tumblr media
The light he faces has no shade. It is merely a fully exposed light bulb.
Tumblr media
So Fadel, the "shrew" in this story, doesn't need to be tamed as much as he needs to be exposed, but not in a negative sense.
Tumblr media
He needs to be allowed to be vulnerable. He needs to be able to lay himself bare. He needs to be free from his secrets.
Tumblr media
But the problem is Fadel, just like his brother, would never willingly give up the control. But unlike Bison, Fadel's control is over himself, not others. Bison told Kant that where Bison is laid-back, Fadel is high-strung, so he would never allow himself to be vulnerable. He would never openly lay himself bare. Because unlike careless Bison, he would never expose himself. Much like when Style fixed Fadel's Jeep, Fadel was upset that Style fixed other issues. He didn't like Style looking where he wasn't supposed to. He didn't like Style changing things he wasn't aware needed to be changed. He didn't want Style looking deeper.
Tumblr media
Which is why Style has to annoy him. Regardless of Style's color, he is a mechanic whose job is to look under the hood to see the problems and get dirty in the process, so he is the perfect man for this job. He would never know the real Fadel because Fadel would never allow that.
Tumblr media
So Style has to get under Fadel's skin to see the real him.

pit babe: it’s my lotr
Part 2 of me subjecting my bestie Naynay to the bottomless well of what-the-fuck? (affectionate) that is Pit Babe. As required by friendship law.
Episode 2:
🏎️ (NN’s got theories:) Charlie’s a mole. Either he’s always been a Tony stooge, or Tony turned him - either way, delicious internal conflict will ensue.
🏎️ NN: Charlie should leave and find someone who doesn’t treat him like a handbag
🏎️ NN: Ooh Jeff is Charlie’s handler!
🏎️ Z + NN: (impromptu and in unison) Charlie! Come to Candy Mountain, Charlie! 🦄 🦄*
🏎️ NN: (at the menopausal line) HE’S GOING INTO HIS HEAT (Pause the video for NN to educate Zimmbs on alpha heat cycles. From what I understand it’s basically the horny flu, or reverse Sunday school - if you don’t get off the omegaverse gods will give you the sniffles)
🏎️ (NN’s face when Babe was all ‘haha it would be so wierd and gross to be attracted to you Way, good thing I’m not!’) 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
🏎️ NN: (about Kim) Ooh he’s got that ‘don’t fuck with me I’m cool’ vibe.
* look we are millennials, are there are only so many mentions of the name Charlie were going to be able to take before our base millennials natures rip through our student-debt ridden late-capitalism malaise to sing-song say 🦄Charlie! Come to Candy Mountain Charlie!🦄

About Kim's accident
The character introductions for season 2 got posted a couple of days ago and there is a part of Kim's bio that is a little confusing in how it's translated. Google says it's a "heart accident", but I was unsure what exactly that meant - if it was meant literally or a figure of speech. Thankfully the lovely @visualtaehyun was willing to help me out, and said that the meaning seems to be intentionally left ambigious.
Here are some details on the wording and their translation:
"อุบัติเหตุ definitely means accident so อุบัติเหตุทางหัวใจ = accident of/related to the heart - in English you might put it as "until an unforeseen incident involving his heart changes everything" but using the word 'accident' is certainly a choice!"
We'll have to wait and see what the season will throw at us. It's Pit Babe so anything is possible;) Thank you again @visualtaehyun for your help!

I'm dying of embarrassment as I type this, but I personally don't like being left out of a joke, so...
I've seen some people point out that, in the english subs, when Style says “Your stuff here... fits me perfectly”, that sounds a bit, uh, suggestive. In the sense that, uh, it might suggest that, uh, Style believes that, uh, something else of Fadel would also fit him perfectly.
That- That's it. That's the innuendo.
Trivia Time: trying to figure out how to explain this got me curious to see how that particular sentence was translated to other languages, so I changed the subs for the other ones I know to see what the translators did... And guess what! The results I got were completely different!!!!
In spanish, Style says “Todo lo que tienes es muy adecuado” (Everything you have is very adequate). That sounds like a compliment to Fadel, and a subtle teasing to how he looks after (his) things (everything has to be in order; everything has to be adequate).
In portuguese, Style says “Tudo em você parece tão perfeito para mim” (Everything of yours seems to have been bespoken for me). Which!! Makes me wanna scream!! I tried to translate it in a way that made sense in english, but what he's saying in these subs is basically “It seems like you are all perfect for me”. Which is uabsbswuhz the cutest freaking thing????
Anyways. These differences are fun to compare, but I really wish I could understand what he's actually saying in thai 😅 The only thing I know for sure is that the exasperated “Shut up” from Fadel works as a response for all three 🤭
[ In response to my question in the tags in this post, where Style says (English subs) "Your stuff...sure fits me perfectly". (Because my idiot ass didn't realise it was an innuendo ^^;; ]
aksjdf;alsfdj thank you so much for explaining it to me I'm very grateful. Sorry for the embarrassment because. Yeah, I can relate. x'D
Also ohhh oHHH I get it now! I don't know why my brain just took it very literally, like, "Oh hey, your clothes actually do fit me!" which was worth commenting because Style is so clearly skinnier than Fadel, y'know?? Although you can kinda tell in the shot that the pants sit loose on Dunk's hips because boy has he worked on making his waist thin (I say, with great appreciation).
(I just took Fadel's "shut up" as like "please... just stop talking. xD Because he was already so clearly Affected by Style at that point)
*O* the Portuguese translation, OH MY GOD!??! How CUTE!?! I'm tickled pink at how the subs could be creating drastically different impressions for different viewers, though. Because Style definitely comes across as less of a gremlin and more sweetly flirty.
@airenyah and/or @visualtaehyun (I hope its okay that I reach out and ask *A*), by any chance do you know if the Thai was intended as an innuendo?

hello~ i was rewatching the THK trailer again and noticed something interesting: FadelStyle go from using formal/polite khun/pom pronouns -> informal/rude meung/guu later in the series.
In the trailer, I think I hear Fadel using them in the "I don't like being pursued" line and Style uses them when he says "Whenever I'm with you, you either make me feel so scared, or so damn safe".
I was wondering if you had any Thoughts about that? I was surprised they use rude pronouns when it looks like KantBison keep using khun/pom throughout. Do you think the rude pronouns a sign that FadelStyle are closer or more a feature of their personality/dynamics?
I'm still very confused about how any of the pronoun stuff works, so I apologies if this doesn't make any sense. ^^;;
ah, it's funny you should send me this ask because only last night before i went to sleep did i ramble in a group chat about the pronoun use in ep1 😂
disclaimer: i'm not a thai native speaker and i actually get kinda anxious talking about the thai language publicly out of fear of getting something embarrassing wrong lmao. calling fellow language nerd @visualtaehyun as well as Known Native Speakers™ @recentadultburnout and @happypotato48 for double checks and potential corrections in case i'm blabbering bullshit at any point <3
yeah, in the trailer it seemed to me that fadel and style were consistently using guu/mueng for each other except for when style was trying to flirt with fadel on purpose (as in, when he's flirting for kant and the car, not when he's saying flirty or romantic shit bc he genuinely likes fadel now. or at least that's what i thought was going on upon watching the trailer for the first time kfkdkfdkjkjfd)
so when i watched ep1 i was actually kinda surprised bc i hadn't expected them to consistently start out using phom/khun with each other at first! which probably also comes from the fact that i hadn't expected them to meet on their own before kant hires style to hit on fadel hahaha (like, i didn't think the "my nipples are sensitive" scene would happen before kant sets style onto fadel. i thought at that point he was already very purposefully flirting with fadel for the sake of the mission, but instead it's all style himself just to get on fadel's nerves 😂)
anyway, in ep1 fadel and style use pretty much only phom/khun with each other EXCEPT for style at three very specific points:
he uses "guu" to refer to himself at the very end of the scene of their first meeting when fadel drives off and style shouts something about fadel scolding him like a dad when fadel has left already. i'm like 90% sure i hear him say "guu" in that specific sentence
you probably caught him call fadel "nong" to be an extra little shit when he sat down and made fadel get him those beers
when fadel manoeuvers style out of the restaurant and style is raging he uses phom/khun until the very last sentence where the subs say "i'm gonna take you out!". unfortunately i can't understand the entire sentence that well but he starts the sentence with "guu" and i'm fairly sure i hear the words "เป็นแฟนกู" [bpen faen guu] which translate to "be my boyfriend" and so i'm guessing he's saying something along the lines of "i'll make you my boyfriend" or "you will be my boyfriend" (calling a native speaker to pls transcribe that sentence for me thank youuu 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻)
so we see that style uses the rude pronoun set guu/mueng when he's annoyed (no. 1) and when he's seriously pissed (no. 3). other than that he sticks to formal/polite pronouns throughout the first episode
however, we know that they're gonna be using guu/mueng for each other regularly at some point from the trailer and there's also that scene in the promo for next episode where fadel asks style who sent him: they're both using guu/mueng in the "who sent you?" "i like you" exchange
so now the question is when and why do they switch from polite to rude pronouns? personally i'm speculating that fadel is gonna start using guu/mueng with style once he's seriously fed up and annoyed by style. bc rude pronouns aren't just used to show closeness/intimacy but also when, you know, you're actively trying to be rude. and i could see fadel switch to the rude pronouns for the exact reason of being rude on purpose in order to emphasize his disdain for style and to give him a hint to fuck off. and i could see style going along with the pronoun switch bc he sure ain't intimidated by fadel and won't go away that easily hahaha
and if that really does happen then i could see them just sticking to the rude pronouns from that moment on, since these pronouns can be used in an informal way too and it does fit their dynamic
also, i just went and rewatched the trailer bc i wanted to see if there were any scenes in which fadel and style use phom/khun for each other that we haven't seen yet and yeah, all the scenes from the trailer in which they do use the polite pronouns are scenes that we in fact all got to see in ep1 already. then we have the "good morning krub" scene happening next episode, which i'm guessing is gonna happen before fadel corners style in the locker room. and i'm guessing at that point they (or at least style) will still be using phom/khun since that's what they've established as their pronouns they use to their face (note how in the above list, style is never standing right in front of fadel, yelling directly into fadel's face when he uses "guu", so fadel likely isn't even aware of it). and i'm also guessing that then when fadel is eventually seriously fed up and suspicious of style, he changes to guu/mueng in order to show his anger and to basically declare a war with style. and style switches to guu/mueng too in order to fight back bc he sure as hell won't let fadel intimidate him
idk what language you have as a first/native language, but mine is german and in german we also differentiate between formal and informal pronouns. although for us it's by far (by FAR) not as nuanced as thai pronouns since we differentiate only two pronouns for the 2nd person: formal "you" (Sie - pronounced "see") vs informal "you" (du - pronounced "doo"). and in german it is absolutely considered rude if you use "du" to address a person you should be using "Sie" for. and you can absolutely show your negative emotions (like anger, annoyance, etc) towards your conversational partner who you should be addressing with "Sie" by suddenly switching to "du", esp when you're trying to start a fight. and yeah i can see fadel switching to rude/informal pronounce in this way, to kind of start a fight with style so style will finally fuck off
and in german, usually once you're on a "du" level of addressing each other (esp if you do it regularly and it wasn't just a one-off sentence in an argument or something) then you usually wouldn't go back to using the formal "Sie" for each other. of course in thai everything is muuuuch more complicated and complex than in german when it comes to pronouns, so this is kinda like comparing apples with oranges. but yeah, i can totally see fadel and style sticking to the rude/informal pronouns since they've already crossed that line. since they've already established that they can use this level (register) of language with each other, so why bother going back to a more formal/polite register?
we'll have to wait and see if i'm right with my speculation about the pronoun switch, though. of course it could happen totally differently than what i think (who knows, maybe they'll hop between guu/mueng and khun/phom for a while depending on their moods, like, whether they're being civil to each other bc the given situation calls for it or whether style is actively hitting on fadel or whether they're annoyed/pissed at each other and basically challenging each other to a fight)
and i don't find it surprising that kant and bison would be using different pronouns for each other. they did meet under completely different circumstances and they have a completely different relationship to each other than fadel and style do
one thing thai and german pronouns have in common is that their usage depends heavily on who is talking to whom and also what situation/context the conversation is happening in. german speaking kids are taught that they have to address adults with the formal "Sie" pronoun unless they're given explicit permission by the adult to use the informal "du". german learners who take it up as a second language are taught that they need to use the formal "Sie" when talking to strangers. however, that doesn't reflect the reality at all. there are situation where you can immediately jump to the informal "du" without asking for permission first even when you don't know the person while if you met this very same person for the first time in a different situation you might have to call them "Sie" or else they'd be offended because using "du" would be very rude in this context
now if we look at bison and kant's first meeting... kant is trying to hit on bison. a rude pronoun that you'd use out of negative feelings or with peers/close friends seems a little inappropriate in this situation, don't you think? it would definitely have made the unsolicited advice sound even worse and more invasive, imo 😂
and also throughout the entire episode their goal is to be polite and friendly to the other person, since, you know, they're trying to get on the other person's good side in order to get something out of it. and even when (and after) they get to know each other, well, intimately, they don't really have a reason to be rude to each other or use more vulgar language, i feel like? UNLIKE fadel and style, who are actively trying to piss each other off
i'm not surprised that fadelstyle and kantbison use different sets of pronouns for each other since the couples have very different starting points with very different goals that require very different strategies in order to successfully get there
i hope i managed to explain it in a way that makes sense to you <3
