Valentine’s Day Application
Name: Copperhead
Age: Late 30's
Do you like to cuddle?: Very much so, especially when my partner has a warm body. Hopefully you don't mind scales. Or tails.
Can we make-out?:
A night in or dinner out?: At this time of year, a night in sounds cozy.
Whip cream or chocolate syrup?: Whipped cream seems less sticky...
Chocolates and roses?: They are nice but I'd rather spoil my partner in giving them than receiving them.
What makes you a good Valentine?: I'm quiet and don't require much maintenance. Positive traits include being attentive and interested in my partner as their own person instead of who they are or what they have.
Would you cook for me?: Yes, just let me know if you have any allergies or food intolerances beforehand.
Would you let me cook for you?: Of course, though some meals may be more difficult to eat than others.
Where would you take me on a date?: Somewhere relevant to your interests unless you are interested in 'obtaining' certain valuables? Imagine the thrill, sneaking in and out of a guarded complex where we take what we please.
Who’s paying?: The people/business we're stealing from (or rather their insurers...)
What did you get me for Valentine’s Day?: It's not Valentine's Day yet so that would be spoiling the surprise.
[XOX]
Liz quirked an eyebrow, intrigued as she looked over the application. And the metahuman who applied. And damn, was she missing out on a whole other experience.
"Honestly cuddling with a tail sounds so cozy. Plus I hate the cold. Despite me dressing like this every season." She gestured at her revealing catsuit with a grin. "What was that meme? 'A hoe never gets cold.'" She snickered.
Getting back to business, blue eyes skimmed back over the paper.
"You're obviously a sweet guy. Making sure I don't have food allergies and all that. And that talk about obtaining valuables, the thrill of sneaking in and out, making the real banks of the world pay for our lovely get away? That has me swooning." She smiled. "And I do love surprises."
"Stop by my place. My bedroom window will be unlocked. Especially this spring time." She winked.

hi I'm learning destiny lore the hard way and I've seen you in my notes, who's Eris Morn? What's her deal? This is an invitation to infodump you seem like the person to ask XD
Oh wow! I will answer your question, despite feeling unworthy to do so, but before I do, since you mentioned you're learning the lore, this is the Eris page from the Ishtar Collective website: https://www.ishtar-collective.net/categories/eris-morn It gives a list of main plot points for Eris up until just before the Season of the Witch and links to all Eris lore that exists in-game, going into far more detail than I can in one Tumblr post.
The Ishtar site pulls a large amount of its info from the D2 API and then supplements anything it can't get from there with human volutneer transcribers pulling from sources like the Destiny Lore Vault: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqJlWJF0IucG7HXcEao78Cw .
If there is lore you can acess in-game, now or in the past, Ishtar has it and it is searchable via keywords. It is official lore, not someone's interpretation of it, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
However, not everyone realizes that the Ishtar Collective also has a Discord: https://discord.gg/v8GsggCV
And that Discord is full of lore nerds who you can just go to and ask obscure lore questions and they will happily answer them (or sometimes get into adorkable near-academic-level debates over them, with citations as well as historical and philosophical references) because that's their definition of fun. They are, for the most part, genuinely lovely humans and I adore them all.
Everything I know about Destiny I learned from either playing the game or reading that website or asking those people.
Now, to answer your question, I'm going to give you a short quick answer and then a longer more in-depth answer afterwards.
The short quick answer is a quote from a story I wrote (A Dance with Vengeance) where I have the Drifter explaining where Eris got her eyes to an Eliksni character I made up:
Tumblr media
Please note: this is fanfiction. This conversation never happens in lore, and the closest we've gotten to Driferis in-game is a delightfully sweet hug buried in the lore tab for a sparrow vehicle, but the events the Drifter is narrating (with a bit of dramatic flourish) did happen to Eris in-game.
The longer answer:
Eris, a former Hunter (and Ahamkara wish-dragon slayer), is the sole surviving member of the First Crota Fireteam, a team of six guardians looking to avenge all the friends and loved ones who died in The Great Disaster (when humanity sent an army of guardians to try to reclaim the Moon from the Hive) and, in particular, to avenge the death of a badass Titan named Wei Ning (Eris' friend and lover of Eriana-3, the fireteam leader). Their goal was to kill Crota, the then-leader of the Hive forces on the Moon (Crota is the son of Oryx, who, himself is both a Hive god and the Taken King, brother to the other Hive gods, Savathun, Hive god of Lies, and Xivu Arath, Hive god of War).
Everyone on the First Crota Fireteam except for Eris died horribly and Eris was lost in the Hellmouth on the Moon for a century. Eris' ghost (Brya) killed itself to protect her and Eris no longer has access to Light-based guardian powers. She killed a Hive acolyte and took its eyes (cutting out her own) since she had wished on her bone to know the way out of the Hellmouth but could no longer see. (Ahamkara wish magic is always tricksy - they're basically wish-granting genies who always twist what you ask for into the worst possible outcome.)
Eris has a few titles: "The Forgotten Blade," "Bane of the Swarm," "Crota's Bane" and, more recently in Season of the Witch, "Hive god of Vengeance." She is our main point of contact on the Moon (the Shadowkeep DLC is fantastic and the Moon is awesome and creepy and one of my favourite places to go in-game - I could go on and on about my favourite spots there).
Eris has devoted the rest of her (now mortal) life to exterminating the Hive and has guided the Guardian (the player character) to do so through many adventures, notably the Crota's End raid (where we kill Crota and finally accomplish what her fireteam set out to do), the Kings Fall raid (where we kill Oryx), the Pit of Heresy dungeon, and the Scarlet Keep strike (where she has one of her infamous fantastic lines: "Do you feel it as I do, Guardian? A hatred as pure and potent as sunshine, soaking through your skin?"
Season of the Witch is all about Eris becoming the Hive god of Vengeance to deal with Xivu Arath. If you've ever watched Full Metal Alchemist, the logistical problem with Xivu is the same: going to war with something that feeds off of violence and death just makes it stronger. Season of the Witch is still available (at the time I'm writing this) and there's some amazing scenes in there. I highly recommend playing through it but if you can't, here's an 8.5 minute video of the 3 main cutscenes including the ending [i.e. this is a spoiler if you haven't played it yet and still want to!]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVUWu-DqZvU
Eris' storyline in-game is all about recovery from trauma. Many of her quests are either helping her seek vengeance or helping her find peace (such as recovering mementos of her fireteam from various spots on the Moon). She is haunted (literally) by the ghosts of her past (here's 19 seconds of her yelling at them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lcs1io-kvdg ) and her recovery from that has made her the unofficial trauma therapist for the Vanguard.
In Season of the Haunted (sadly no longer playable) she guides Zavala, Crow and Cabal Empress Caiatl through combatting and laying to rest their own nightmares-of-the-past-made-real. Here's a link to a 9 min video of the main cutscenes from that season (there's more content if you watch a full playthrough): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWHphu-iT3w
Eris taught herself how to wield Hive magic from a combination of her century of wandering on the Moon and the journals of Toland the Shattered (one of the members of her fireteam who betrayed them to the Hive and is now a floating sparkle-ball who sometimes helps us and sometimes just insults us on the Moon).
Eris is the Vanguard's Hive expert and Darkness expert. She is also one of Ikora's Hidden (Ikora is the Vanguard spymaster and the Hidden are her network of spies.) One of Eris' main story elements is that most people don't trust her, and not without cause. Another D2 character, Elsie Bray, aka the Exo Stranger, has been living her own personal Groundhog Day time-loop hell where she has watched humanity fail over and over against the Witness and then goes back in time to try to stop it. In most of Elsie's time loops Eris succumbs to her trauma and the corrupting nature of the Darkness powers she wields, goes full Hive, and leads the forces of evil to wipe out humanity in what is referred to as "the Dark Timeline."
Eris is constantly dealing with accusations that she's crazy, that she's evil, that she's unstable, and every time it's proven she's not, but people still find her untrustworthy and it isolates her from most of humanity, noteworthy exceptions to this being Ikora, Queen Mara, the player character, and the Drifter.
I am (obviously) especially enamoured of the relationship between Eris and the Drifter, and their in-game banter is absolute top-tier (he flirts and Eris roasts him and it is glorious), but the very core of their relationship is built on comfort and understanding. He trusts her (something almost no one else does) and she gives him hope (which is genuinely impressive and beautiful because the Drifter's own backstory is brutal and bleak as fuck).
Throughout most of Eris' narrative in-game she is a recovering survivor, but in Beyond Light (the DLC where we get our not-ice magic Stasis powers) we get to see Eris not just psychologically and emotionally recovered, but also getting to be a badass in battle. This is, in my opinion, the best cutscene in the entire game: (it is 1 min an 35 seconds and far, far too short): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAD6E_vESJY
I love this cutscene not only because it is visually spectacular, but because Eris has, for most of her narrative, been an injured survivor needing the player character to fight in her place because she no longer can. But in Beyond Light she is now able to kick ass and, perhaps even more importantly, be a part of a fireteam again.
There's more but I'm going to stop there. Eris is badass and amazing and creepy and fantastic. She uses the weapons of the Hive against them. She uses her own traumatic experiences to heal others. Her dialogue lines are evocative and snarky and brooding and poetic. The voice acting for her is some of the best I've ever heard anywhere. Her character has a complex, empowering, healing, hopeful, and beautiful narrative. And I love her intensely for it.
Ideally, this has answered your question at least somewhat, but do feel free to ask me any follow up questions you have about this or anything. I maintain I am not an expert in D2 lore. I am a writer and I don't just have biases, I use them to make art. But I do love the game and while I am not an authority on anything, I have immersed myself in much of the lore with wild abandon and will happily point you to places where you can find more information where my own understanding is limited.
And with that, I leave you with another fantastic Eris quote that so many people have connected with and found beautiful but that also encapsulates "who is Eris Morn" pretty well on its own:
"Recovery is a spiral, not a circle. You may return to the same patterns, but you will break free." —Eris Morn

Signal boost: "Be more democratic, be more autocratic, OTW" by chestnut_pod
Holy cow, you guys, go read chestnut_pod's amazing meta about democracy, infrastructure, the OTW, and anti-racism, it is incredibly insightful and is making points that are really important about the OTW's internal structure and how it works against any change (even changes everyone agrees are good and right and necessary). chestnut_pod has a ton of practical experience in organizing community groups, and it shows. For some background: the entire OTW was started by Astolat and her friends. They were (and are) a group of very competent and dedicated people, and that's awesome! but none of them had experience with managing large groups of people, or organizing groups at a large scale, and holy cow it showed. When AO3 started growing beyond what their small cadre could reasonably handle, things started getting dicey behind the scenes. None of the policies and procedures scaled up very well, they didn't listen to people outside their own sphere, there was huge burnout among volutneers, incredible lack of transparency, and a whole host of other problems. This led to major conflict over elections in 2011 and 2015 (the 2015 election was pretty wild), the latter of which ended with the entire existing board flouncing in a huff which allowed a whole new cadre to come in, and many of that completely-new-board had experience with large nonprofits. Things have been better since. But, and this is the crucial bit, there was no restructuring of the organization. The people running those structures knew way more about how to competently administer large organizations than the previous group had. But the structures were still the same ones that had been fine back when AO3 was tiny and just getting started, but really need to be updated and modernized. And that's never happened! There is no transparency, there is almost no accountability, and if Astolat-and-company didn't foresee something as being a potential problem back in 2008 there's no way of making sure it gets handled unless it is some volunteer's pet project and something they can do by themselves with minimal support. chestnut_pod does a great job of laying out why this is a problem, why it's getting in the way of anti-racism initiatives and everything else the OTW wants to do, and what could be done about it. Here are some of my favorite bits:
(when dealing with large groups of people) It is impossible to have really free and fair elections without proper representative structures. Those representative structures will sometimes mean that the people you elect are going to make decisions in the moment that you don't like. But those same structures will ensure that, when the next election rolls around, there is something you can do about that. In the absence of representative democracy and structures that channel a large base into smaller, more nimble, but inherently rotating, core of decision-makers and buck-stoppers, "direct democracy" ends up just looking like an equally small group of decision-makers undemocratically decided upon via inertia, a group who can't be easily ousted, but who also can't make decisions quickly when called for. The worst of both worlds! It is my impression that this is absolutely what happened within the OTW wrt the 2020 statement. (For what it's worth, I think it has happened in the past with things like "podfic streaming" and "dealing with certain spam works" -- it's just that those were far less consequential problems and so didn't gain this much traction or attention when the OTW failed to quickly and adequately address them.) Again, credit where it is due: the OTW has a very complicated job which they never really expected to grow to this scale. It was founded by a small group of people who all knew each other and had similar positions on most matters. It was the late naughts. All of this is true, and also, it's now 2023, the AO3 specifically is enormous, and the world has changed! It is simply not workable any longer to have some committee chairs who are not elected and have no term limits, no easy onboarding for new volunteers, and no clear hierarchy between the Board and the committees and between the committees themselves. ... In short, each of the broken-down problems begs a certain number of questions, the answers to which we do not know, because the OTW has either not seen fit to try to answer them, or has never shared their answers broadly. This is a major problem either way, and I think it is the first thing that needs to happen, because having accurate knowledge is the first step to solving any problem, much less one as complex and multifaceted as the multiple facets of racism as they appear in OTW spaces. Having a good grasp on what the problems really are, whom they most affect, and how, is fundamental to enacting solutions that actually help, and, at the very least, proceeding with the knowledge of how these solutions are incomplete and imperfect, as they inevitably will be. ... I think where the OTW has fallen down most is in not making that space to hear and listen. A lot of the solutions people propose out there in the wide Internet -- most notably anything about new mandatory tags of in-fic content moderation -- get shot down immediately as impossible. As I argued in the previous section, I don't think we actually know what is or isn't possible, because the OTW has done a terrible job telling us clearly what the impediments are to a variety of proposed fixes. Moreover, the discussion around those suggestions easily becomes acrimonious. Moderation isn't a dirty word; it's vital to having constructive conversations. Just like how having representative structure makes a space more democratic, moderation makes speaking out more democratic, because in an unmoderated space, the loudest voices drown out the rest.

This song gave me an idea for an au where maybe Lando has spent his whole life in the hospital battling a serious illness which he knows eventually will take his life and then maybe volunteer Daniel comes along and they grow attached to each other's and Daniel doesn't know how to say goodbye to whenever Lando eventually passes.
Anon this made me tear up. I couldn't respond when you sent this because it unfortunately corresponded with some bad news I got but I love this idea
Lando having been sick since he was born. He has never known a life without pain and hospitals and near death experiences. He's been in and out of hospitals his whole life. He has planned his funeral, he has listened to family say goodbye, and by the time he reaches his twenties, Lando is exhausted because he wasn't meant to make it to ten let alone twenty and his quality of life is poor
Yet there is one bright spot after he turns twenty-one and it's the new volunteer that is on his service and never fails to make him smile: Daniel
Daniel having had an illness or having lost a family member to an illness when he was young, and the one thing he remembered being good was the volutneer and the nurses that always made them laugh and smile even on the darkest days
So Daniel grows up and volunteers so he can give families a little bit of cheer. And thats how he meets Lando
They never expected to fall in love, but they do, and Lando hates himself for it because he knows that he is dying. He knows it could happen any moment and that he will be leaving Daniel behind to deal with that

A bit late to the FIRST hype train but another shout-out for the FTC teams. My school didn't have the shop or the funding for the big FRC bots (loved to see those robots at world's in 2016). But we still had a blast building our bot and competing at quals and super quals.
I volutneered at an FTC competition one year! As an FRC student with no local FTC teams in the district I didn't really get FTC until I went to volunteer at one. That was the uhhhhhhh 2019-2020 game? I think? and it was SUPER impressive. Big respect !!

anyway instead of working on my paper i just read a lengthy article on the housing crisis in toronto and now im 1) bawling 2) angry
people always ask why i hate toronto and 1) i can never afford to live here even if it didnt lack green spaces which means i dont even WANT to live here 2) (middle class + affluent) torontonians are rude, selfish, and SO full of ‘toronto pride’ bc we’re a developing ‘first class’ city or whatever, and we’ve got fancy sports teams and a lot of movies and shows film here, while completely ignoring the cost to the people on the fringes of society, the poor, the refugees, the ill, who get trampled under this unending need for ‘progress’ and ‘development’
im just?? im sick of it? the author makes an interesting point - illness, tragedy, poverty - things that often lead to homelessness, these aren’t new phenomena, but the mass homelessness facing the city is
it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why

(Not the same anon) I think an ao3 volutneer responded to the article on tumblr, pointing out that it was irresponsible specifically to imply that harassment and the like leads to policy changes and reactions.
That’s a good point actually. On one hand, yes the fic has changed the discussion around how ao3 operates, but that doesn’t mean this fic author or any of these behaviours are okay or should be endorsed
