underrated fics of 2021 + 2022

ok so yes i did a masterlist of my fav fics of 2021/2022 but i wanted to end the year w some fics from 2021/2022 that, in my opinion, are underrated! as a smaller writer, i know how discouraging it can be to see lots of popular writers/fics on everyones’ lists all the time, but never see yours. & that’s no one’s fault! but i wanted to balance it all out a bit w this. just a friendly reminder that not getting many hits, kudos, comments, etc is not an indicator of your talent !!! write something because you want to & it makes you happy -- you’ll find your audience along the way!

i actually didn’t read a ton of fics that came out this year (i was surprised before i remembered that i work in retail & we’ve been short staffed the majority of the year & i pet sit on the side & am a student .... makes sense that i wasn’t able to read nearly as many fics as i wanted to lol.) so i’m incorporating some fics from 2021 as well, just like i did w my previous list & managed to compile a list of my top 15 underrated fics :)

as someone who’s very passionate about social justice & inequalities, this fic spoke to me. i love the way jaerie writes harry’s internal monologues acknowledging the difficulties & bleak realities of the situation while still allowing himself to be/feel empowered however he can. we love to see it! & the tension & dynamic between harry & louis? top tier!

i know this was released super recently but i’m counting it anyway lol. from the banter to louis’ immediate flirting to harry’s clumsiness, everything packed into this short fic is so cute and is guaranteed to have you grinning the whole time.

as someone who has severe adhd, this fic made me feel super seen. i, unfortunately, do not have a lovely dom like harry does, but i am perfectly content with living through harry for this fic. the way bee describes harry’s feelings going from trying to navigate the scrambled mess that is her head to how louis’ praise makes her feel to how safe & protected she feels with louis? amazing. groundbreaking. we love to see it!!!

this fic always keeps you on your toes, wondering how the next interaction louis & marcel have will go. the pining, flirting, louis being protective & supportive, marcel opening up & letting louis in & their healthy communication is amazing. i’ve included this fic on some of my previous lists, so it’s a shocker to no one that i love it & would absolutely recommend.

this is such a wonderful, cute, raw fic. greta is phenomenal at writing metaphors & bringing anything they write to life. it’s written in first person which i think, instead of putting readers off, it just makes you feel so much more immersed in the fic & the wonderful world greta created.

ok so yes i also betaed this fic bc annika is wonderful to work w but i genuinely recommend this one as well. the psychology major in me is obsessed w the dark & twisted plot twists & the ending. i loathe miscommunication used as a plot device (in some fics, it’s understandable, in others it’s used an excuse to create unnecessary angst, but. i digress) & i cannot tell you how relieved i was when i saw that there was an opening to use miscommunication to create more angst & annika instead decided to throw in communication that was healthy yet understandably withdrawn. the bittersweet ending always gets me conflicted bc like i want a happy ending??? but it’s so good & absolutely makes sense for the fic??? i could go on forever.

Lmaoooo okay listen. Here’s the thing about Ohio: Ohioans are allowed to talk shit about Ohio. It’s like people on tumblr talking shit about tumblr. We legitimately have complaints, but also… we’re attached. Right? That’s us with Ohio. That said, if you’re not from Ohio, get off our backs lololol I will defend this state to the death, alright? 😂 I love her, I hate her, I can’t live without her. I have tried moving away from Ohio so many times and I loved where I lived!!! But ultimately, I still came back. ¯\__(ツ)__/¯

As for my sushi fic, I love you??? 😭😭😭 thank you!!! There were a few scenes I thought of that, for one reason or another, didn’t end up working out. One of them was Harry hanging out with Nick at the studios in a flashback to when grim was still doing the late night show, after they’d first met. It was just a boring little thing with them flirting and then Harry bringing Louis in when he came to pick up Harry and take him home, introducing them to each other, and the instant chemistry there.

Another was a scene with Harry and Nick in the car on their way to get some sushi together, Harry singing the bit about music for a sushi restaurant again and Nick being all appalled and embarrassed but also secretly pleased Harry remembered what he’d said.

There was also gonna be a really soft larry scene with them just cuddling together before anything had been confessed, all these thoughts and hopes and dreams and longing slowly drifting through their heads.

There was gonna be another scene where Louis was in his office at work doing the ledgers and listening to Nick and he ends up calling in and somehow getting through on the show for a game of ball bag or something and Louis has to act like he defo called in for the game and Nick has to act like it’s all fine and dandy but really louis just called in to banter and be a little shit with Nick but now he’s playing the game and Has To Win because he’s Competitive™ and has to now show that he really does know his shit (he gets some super niche and random category that he just happens to know everything about and Nick KNOWS he knows everything about it because Louis was secretly the reason that he put that category in the ball bag in the first place, so he knows this poor current champion of five weeks or something stellar like that has NO chance at winning again) and Louis ends up forfeiting when he makes some sort of comment on air in anger at Nick for counting his answer wrong when technically it’s correct and it shows he and Nick know each other so Nick gives the win to the previous champion pissing Louis off again but it’s okay, because Nick brings Louis his favorite biscuits next time he comes over.

Can you tell that I thought a lot about my sushi fic? Lol I love them very much. I’m glad you did too!! I hope you like these little headcanon/bits that never got written or slipped in! Thank you again for being so kind! 😘😘😘😘

In regards to the cult thing: I completely agree with you. I have listened to a few podcasts and watched documentaries about cults. The main take away for me is how easily it could happen to literally anyone. I did a lot of research for another friday night and the cult I used in the fic. I picked that one because of how it started and the type of people it attracts which to put it simply is "hippies". Which is why I made Lennon's parents into Woodstock and such. Because it was just her mother's interest in music that started it. I don't know if you are into podcasts but there is one called The Sunshine Place which is really interesting. I also heard a true crime story about this "cult" that was entwined in the case. They talked to people who had bad experiences and good ones. It was really interesting! The podcast was called What Happened To Holly. Sorry for the essay, I too am passionate about cults 😅

OMG please do not apologize!! and YES, it could literally happen to anyone! anyone could be caught at the exact wrong time in their life!! Or be unlucky enough to be born into it without the privilege or opportunity to question beliefs and get out of it. I looked up the podcasts you mentioned (thank you!) and Synanon rang a bell. I think it was mentioned in a book that I read a few months ago about Charles Manson and the murders his followers committed. It wasn't a very good book, but a girl at Barnes and Noble who was wearing eyeliner recommended it, so yes, I bought it. (Can you blame me?!)

I think that was such a clever choice for another friday night!! It really shows just how easy it is to fall into a bad situation.
