Codejuly23 Day #01: Hero
This is part of a short story I started writing in 2020 and... it's still not done yet.
The gang celebrates a funeral in memorial of Aelita's father. I thought it could be a nice idea to dedicate the first day of the challenge to Waldo Schaeffer.
"And he was our hero..."
----
It's been a while since the last time I participated in a CodeJuly! This is exciting. ^^

19.- Miércoles
Personajes: Anthea Hopper, Waldo Franz Schaeffer

Gods Complication, Log 4
After a grueling task, finally Chronos was able to get connected to that old fart.
He knew he should have some respect for Waldo, for that old man is the one who spawned some universes from thin air, but he digressed.
Out of the distance, he saw the man materializing into existence.
The man, Waldo Schaeffer, let out a loud gasp as he opened his eyes.
“Where am i?” He mumbled.
He looks around the place. The place gave him an air of familiarity but it felt horrifying.
Is this… the multi-void? Waldo thinks. How did I get here?
“Because I brought you here.”
He cocked his head to face Chronos. Waldo shot his eyes open, as he recognized the familiar trait from the apparition.
“Jeremie?”
Chronos scoffed as he leapt to the platform above the man.
“Greetings, my name is Chronos, the ruler of the inbetween-universe, God of the multiverse.” Chronos introduced himself.
Chronos raised his hand before Waldo could even respond.
“Yes, my name used to be Jeremie, but something happened to my part of the universe that made me this way.”
Waldo began to think, why can’t he see the universe Chronos was from?
Chronos threw him a side-eye glare before Waldo could say what he wanted to say.
“No, the reason you can’t see my universe is because my world doesn’t involve you.”
You can hear my thoughts, can't you?
“Yes, I can.”
Chronos sighed. “I brought you here to talk about your ‘Last Resort’ program.”
“You know about that?” Waldo asked.
“Of course I do, it’s what caused the universe alignment to form?”
“Universe alignment?” Waldo echoed.
Chronos summoned a glowing platform in front of the platform Waldo is standing on.
“Come, let me show you…”
The man obeyed and followed Chronos on the glowing platform. He walked to the void of darkness at the edge of the world until the starry skies around him disappeared.
His eyes shot wide to see an array of glowing white portals.
“Is this…”
“The multiverse portals, yes, or what I like to call Universe Alignment.” Chronos cuts him off.
Chronos walked over to one of the portals.
“This is the first universe to come to life, ‘Prime Universe’ or what you call ‘The Original Universe…” Chronos explained.
Chronos lifted his arm, which caused a few of the portals next to the first one to glow.
“... And these ones are the universes that came to life after the ‘Last Resort’ program.” The apparition continued.
Waldo doesn’t even need to look through the portal to recognize the worlds that Chronos was pointing at. Some of the worlds he vividly remembers, one that is too dark for him to visit. Even when he saw those worlds in his dreams
Chronos walked over to the last portal in the row.
“And finally, this universe is the world you are currently living in.”
Chronos turns around to face the man.
“You see, every universe born from the program is stored here, even a small variation of the ‘Prime Universe’ is also stored here.” Chronos added. “I can visit these universes, alter them, change them completely, or even take someone from one universe and put them in the other with ease.”
Waldo can feel himself shudder by the last statement. He doesn’t like the implication that it could have.
Something caught Waldo’s attention, a universe portal not in the same row as the others. He walked over to it to examine the portal.
“Why is this one portal placed in a separate row?” Waldo asked.
“Because I made it.” Chronos calmly answered.
“You made it?” Waldo repeated, to make sure.
“Yes, believe it or not, I can do that with ease.”
Waldo examines the portal from top to bottom one more time.
“Can I visit this universe?” Waldo asked.
“Better not.”
“Why not?”
“You will not like how this universe will go, to say the least.” Chronos answered.
Waldo turned back to face Chronos, his mind speak his words first.
How long has this universe been made? And how can I not see the universe in my dreams?
Chronos lets out a quiet chuckle.
“I made it before I brought you here.” Chronos answered. “As for your second question, it’s because I blocked it from you.”
“Blocking it, how is that possible?” Waldo asked
“I can do whatever the fuck i want with my creation.” Chronos answered with a deadpan expression.
Chronos grumbled.
“But I guess if you are that curious, I can open the access to other universes that might come up.” Chronos continued. “But don’t say I didn't warn you in advance.”
Suddenly, Waldo’s body began to glow. The man began to panic.
“What’s going on?” Waldo asked.
“It means you are waking up in the real world of your universe.”
“Will I ever come back to this place again?”
“If I summon you again, yes, but if you want to talk to me, you can think about me before going to sleep again.” Chronos answered. “Until next time, old man.”
Chronos turned around as the man vanished into white light behind him. Chronos sighed before he walked out of the Universe Alignment.

TGFTO Multiverse Lore: @the-writing-artist
("Gods Complications" is my take on Code Lyoko Multiverse, a story where Chronos is from)
(The other universes pointed by Chronos are mostly just Abby's AU, the "A small variation of the Original Universe" refers to the Lyokowarriors Sissi concept by Abby and some small bits like Garage Kids lmao, and the last universe is my AU, Switched Hearts, this whole shit is just my take on silly Multiverse stuff)

What happens when a DCMK fan gets into Code Lyoko? Well, they make this apparently...
Welcome to Code Meitantei, a Code Lyoko Fusion AU for Detective Conan. Featuring: -Shinichi's first attempt at virtualizing himself ending in him getting shrunk into Conan instead of taking APTX-4869
-Haibara being the Aelita surrogate of the AU and being lovingly called 'Ai' by this AU's Lyoko Warriors
-The Detective Boys + Conan being the Lyoko Warriors, featuring all the horrible shit that comes with that title
-XANA being much more scary because this is a MURDER MYSTERY manga
-Akemi Miyano being the Waldo Schaeffer/Franz Hopper of this AU, complete with being called 'Masami Hirota' by most of the cast (If you get the reference to this one and why there's a name distinction, kudos to you)
-Ran and Heiji being unofficial Lyoko Warriors due to being the only teenagers who can actually hold their own against XANA
-The Black Organization being Project Carthage
-Kogoro doing his best impression of Jim Morales
And finally:
-Conan being so sarcastic while being the Jeremie Belpois surrogate that he makes FuniDub Conan look like the nicest guy on earth.
Anyway, if you want to see me showcase this AU in full, pls tell me. This AU has been stewing in my brain for so long.

Code: July Day 12 - Hopeless
There's no way I'm getting all the ones I want to done in July at this point, so you'll probably see a few stragglers posted in the next couple weeks.
This one's based on the prologue of the fangame IFSCL, but since the whole story isn't out yet I've kind of taken my own spin on it. The premise should mostly explain itself, at least.
And no, I'm not doubling this up with day 30's prompt, because I want to actually show them being happy for that one.
...
13-04-2010
If you could live your life over again, what would you do differently?
It was one of those lofty questions you only got in philosophy questions or as essay prompts to judge your character. Jeremie had always hated that, the kind of question that has no right answer, a problem with no solution. It always leaves him flailing trying to figure out what he's supposed to say in response--he's much more comfortable with math and science, where things aren't necessarily simpler, but every consistent action has a specific result. Two plus two always equals four. Baking soda and vinegar always makes carbon dioxide.
Even in the quantum sciences where there was far more uncertainty, he still held the belief that it all fit into a paradigm people just hadn't figured out yet. Time moves in a straight line, unless it doesn't, according to some rule that hadn't yet been discovered.
Computers, most of all. If you delete something (really delete it, not just your grandma wiping the Recycle Bin), it should be irretrievable.
If you could do things over again. It was supposed to be a hypothetical. But all the laws he knows have already fallen to pieces--and behind it, he's forced to face that question in a terrifyingly real way.
It's hard for him to read the flickering blue display on the screen across the room with one of his glasses' lenses rendered a useless conflagration of spiderweb cracks. 30...20 seconds left, maybe? Jeremie could've force-executed the special RTTP immediately, of course, but he hadn't been able to bring himself to enter the last command. Did that make him a coward? It's not like an extra minute would make much of a difference.
Maybe he should've known this was coming the moment he'd looked into the news article, and the strange events that had immediately followed.
Dr. Hugh Tyron found dead in his home...asphyxiated...no signs of struggle...under posthumous investigation for cyberterrorism and possession of confidential documents and technology. The name had struck Jeremie as vaguely familiar, like he'd seen it in passing, and a bit of digging revealed a paper trail perfectly parallel to Waldo Schaeffer and the other members of Project Carthage he'd managed to identify.
Immediately after the article, those other members began dying one after another, in either a set of serial murders or horrific accidents usually involving power lines or out-of-control industrial equipment.
Mr. Delmas had, out of the blue, sent a friendly email to Jeremie asking about info security--apparently, the Kadic school records had been breached and he was concerned about student safety, but had no idea where to start in upgrading their outdated systems.
A fire had broken out at the old Renault factory, putting it back on the city's radar and resuming talks of demolition.
A prolonged blackout had struck the entire city of Valence, France, where Jeremie's parents lived and where he would've still been at the time if he hadn't left for college in America a couple of weeks early.
Twelve times, they'd tried again to destroy it. Twelve times, they'd succeeded, but got less and less of a reprieve, had less and less hope. It only figured that number thirteen was the unlucky one.
And now, here he is, running the last resort RTTP, one so extreme none of them would remember anything once all was said and done. He wouldn't be doing it if he was completely hopeless--he was sure there had to have been something they could've done to prevent this outcome, maybe when XANA was weaker. But it's not like he'll be able to do much to change things, just relying on their scattered half-memories to guide them down another path. It's a long shot, but maybe it'll work. He has to believe that.
Jeremie wishes he'd had time to leave something behind for his younger self, a message or a bit of advice or something, but there's no way something like that would survive a RTTP as big as this one anyway, so he's left simply speculating to pass the last few seconds. He's probably going to miss his own perspective the most--because XANA had been big, yes, but so many things had seemed equally as big and scary back then when they just weren't, things as simple as talking to his friends or having a crush or telling the truth--dear god, he's going to have to come out all over again isn't he--
Maybe...maybe he would tell himself to spend more time with them, not to just save it for a later he hadn't been sure was coming. Not to get so worked up over little things, because he only ever got so annoyed because he was scared. Tell them more, in general. Several incidents could've been avoided like that.
Like William. That's one of the things that was obvious in hindsight--he wasn't angry at William, only a tiny bit of it had ever been at William. It was a whole mess of mistakes on everyone's part, but it wasn't William's fault that Jeremie had spent an entire summer break sulking and come back full of spite.
Yeah, Jeremie thinks, that's definitely one thing he'd want to change. He'd devirtualize William instead of freezing up and yelling at him uselessly. Maybe they'd be a little closer at the end.
He sees the counter hit single digits. He considers telling Yumi, on the other side of the door to the busted cargo elevator behind him, but decides against it. The whine from the mainframe, this time loud enough to be clearly audible two floors up, should be enough of an indicator.
Aelita's stuck upstairs. He wishes he could call her. He hopes she understands. He hopes that she can hope alongside him, because she's always been like that, even on her worst days.
Really, if anyone's going to figure out what's going on and how to stop XANA this time, it's going to be her, out of sheer stubbornness if nothing else. He can't hope to match that.
The whine reaches a fever pitch, but the air doesn't grow thick like he's used to it doing. He can move perfectly fine, without time seeming to slow to a crawl while his brain runs too fast to keep up.
A white light springs from the center of the laboratory, and Jeremie shields his eyes--but not fast enough to miss a flicker in the air in front of him.
It...is him, he realizes as he peeks out from in between his fingers. Younger and dumber and looking like he's staring into an oncoming train, but definitely himself. The elder tries to scramble to his feet, tries to wave a greeting, think of something to say, I'm sorry, I forgive you--but before he can get a word out his world goes green, then white in a shower of painful sparks.
09-10-2003
Jeremie lurches backwards, the weight of his own backpack nearly sending him tumbling. He grips onto the side of the bridge to steady himself and takes a moment to catch the breath he'd suddenly lost.
What had that been just now, on the other side of the bridge, looking at him?
He rubs his eyes with the heel of a hand, glancing over to where he'd seen it, but...the stranger who'd been standing there is nowhere to be seen.
"What was that?...I really need to get some sleep."
For a moment, he looks over his shoulder, considering going back and telling Maya. But--that's dumb, what's he even supposed to say to her, that he'd had a weird dream? He hadn't even explained those to her properly yet. Besides, once he got the remote connection set up, he would be able to talk to her whenever he wanted--and as of right now, he'd be in enough trouble if he got caught outside of the dorms.
He ignores the chill down his spine, or the sudden weight on his shoulders, as he hops down the ladder to the waterways where he'd parked his scooter.
(A boy sits bolt upright, whipping his head around towards the other bed in his room with a long-since-dulled venom on his tongue for being woken up--but then he remembers that he's never had a roommate.)
(A girl presses her ear to her doorway, but she doesn't hear her parents arguing. So why can't she sleep? She checks her phone out of habit, but that's stupid. No one ever calls her. And--she likes it that way, doesn't she?)
(A boy--or at least they think they must be a boy, at the time--scrambles about trying to keep a small, hyperactive dog from destroying a hotel room so he can get a few seconds of peace to call his family and let him know he'd gotten there safe, despite already knowing the call's going to go to voicemail. He really hopes whoever he's rooming with will be cool about dogs.)
(An older boy's in the middle of writing his twenty-sixth love letter that night when his stomach suddenly drops out from under him and his eyes sting with frustrated tears. He sits back in his chair, stares out the window, and decides he's done enough work on his little project for one night.)
(A virtual girl lies on her back and stares up towards the vanishing point of the datastream far above, suddenly convinced that there must be an infinite amount of life to live beyond it, despite having no evidence. She does not know that world. She has never known it. So how can she miss it with such ferocity?)
(And a blond with broken glasses opens his eyes to find white as far as he can see, except for a line at the horizon where a rainbow sits like a smeary soap bubble, as if the light itself has slowed enough to split into its constituent colors--or, perhaps, he was moving too fast. He slumps down against a door that isn't there anymore, realizing abruptly that he is both Schrodinger and the cat, in one place and time and another, existing and not existing.
He settles in for a millisecond that will last an eternity. But perhaps, if he goes unobserved, he can be in that other place, just for a moment.
And if that's right, he vows to do whatever he can to fix the odds, this time.)

OK, I made this post a few months ago vaguely musing on a possible modern day continuity reboot of Code Lyoko by its current copyright owners (who, as of this post, are a company named Dargaud) and what would differentiate the reboot from the original. I wanna dump a bunch of ideas here about what the hypothetical reboot could entail. And I would love to see other fans of the show who see this post to reblog with their own ideas of what could be done with such a reboot. Even any ideas that contradict a previous reblogger's or even my own.
This post got big, so I'm putting it under a read more.
Around the mid 2000s, in the height of the War on Terror, an international joint group pulls an old scrapped counterterrorism idea from the 1970s out of the mothballs called "Project Carthage" (if the studio doesn't want to make overt references to the War on Terror in a kids' show, it could at least be vaguely alluded to as a reason for pulling the old project back out). Some of the most brilliant minds are put to work on recommissioning and modernizing Project Carthage, including Waldo F. Schaeffer and his partner in every regard, Anthea Hopper. When Waldo and Anthea discover some in the project have darker intentions for Carthage, they quit in protest.
Like original canon, they move to a cabin in the mountains and have Aelita, only for Anthea to get taken in an effort to get to Waldo, and he runs with Aelita to the suburbs of Paris where he changes his name to Franz Hopper. Covertly drawing from old resources and secretly securing and old bunker below the former site of a car factory on the Seine River, running an underground tunnel from the bunker to a secret passage in the basement of his house as well as the service tunnels below the gymnasium building of the school he works at under his new identity. Over the next several years, he builds a powerful computer server in the bunker based on concepts he'd been helping develop for Project Carthage based around the rise in virtual reality software, as well as three revolutionary chambers with mass-to-energy capabilities to turn real objects and people into living data that can travel through and interact with virtual environments. He calls the world he creates within the server "Lyoko", based on the Japanese word for travel. The agents who took Anthea track down Hopper and Aelita, they escape to Lyoko where XANA turns on them, Hopper turns off the computer form the inside, basically the same song and dance there.
Early 2020s, a prodigy student named Jeremy Belpois with a knack for programming and drone-building attends Kadic Academy, one year in advance. While looking around the gymnasium storage for old discarded robotic parts he can repurpose, Jeremy accidentally wanders into an underground tunnel that gut instinct says probably wasn't officially school-sanctioned. He follows the tunnel until he discovers an abandoned bunker with a large computer server that looks straight out of science fiction. A quick check of the map on his phone tells Jeremy he's beneath Seguin Island, opposite the end where that new music and performing arts center was recently built. Fascinated by the big supercomputer just lying dormant in an old underground island bunker, Jeremy turns it on to take a look at what it contains and see what it may have been used for. He's shocked to discover an entire advanced virtual reality environment within the server and even more shocked when he accidentally awakens a sophisticated AI in the form of an amnesiac young girl.
Over the next couple of days of sneaking out to study the supercomputer's programming and get to know the virtual girl (he could nickname her Maya only to learn her real name later, like in old canon, or they could learn her name is Aelita sooner by means of something like some line of identifying code), Jeremy finds himself mysteriously targeted by minor cyber threats and strange mishaps with machinery, but he's unable to prove anything to school authorities. Ulrich Stern, athlete kid of a wealthy school benefactor and the classmate Jeremy had been assigned to tutor, catches Jeremy in the act of sneaking off, and he reluctantly lets him in on the secret. While studying the hardware and software of the supercomputer, they learn what the chambers, or "scanners", are capable of, which is essentially like putting on a VR set but instead stepping physically into the VR itself, rather than remotely controlling an avatar from the real world.
The cyber threats worsen until Yumi Ishiyama, Ulrich's sparring partner from one grade above them, ends up involved. Together, they discover that the attacks are coming from a disembodied entity within the server's hard drive named XANA, who is using one of the numerous towers within Lyoko to interface with the real world and attack the people who have been messing with the supercomputer. It's discovered that Aelita is a recognized authority within the system that can shut off the towers when they are activated, and the group forms a pact to help Aelita get to these towers in secret while Jeremy works on a potential energy-to-mass ("materialization") program that can create a physical body for Aelita to help her escape the virtual world.
Just a week after the pact is made, a new transfer student named Odd Della Robbia begins school at Kadic, and a shortage of dormitory space prompts the principal to make him and Ulrich roommates, marking the start of the series. Odd is naturally roped into the shenanigans surrounding Lyoko and XANA due to his frequent interactions with Ulrich, and he is let in on the secret as well as the story of how Jeremy discovered the supercomputer in the first place. If the Return to the Past is used in the reboot continuity (RTTP in the original was created per executive meddling initially preventing the use of an overarching plot, but it's still a useful plot device), Jeremy may have figured out its activation sequence after Odd was initiated.
The plot would revolve around fighting XANA in secret as they try to create a means for Aelita to leave Lyoko as well as try to search the supercomputer and the bunker housing it for clues as to who created it. Details that weren't conceived yet in production of the original series' first season could be sprinkled into the reboot's first season. Like obscure gossip about an old science teacher who disappeared one day and an old boarded up house at the far end of the forest that's avoided by students due to rumors of it being haunted. Characters that weren't thought up until subsequent seasons, like Hiroki, could also appear earlier. The Lyoko Warriors may at some point discover that their secret tunnel to the bunker has a side passage with a secure door that's heavily locked from inside the tunnel, exploring what's beyond that door only to discover that they're inside that abandoned house.
Aesthetics-wise, I could see potential in the reboot's crew using some sort of mix between designs in the original series and redesigns that were made for the Evolution sequel series (not using live-action, of course; the real world would probably be animated as it was in the original). Smart phones and tablets would also be prevalent in the setting, as Jeremy would more likely make use of those than lug around a whole laptop computer everywhere. The Lyoko Warriors could easily make use of this kind of technology in keeping track of XANA's activities as well as keep in touch with Aelita while she lives in Lyoko. Odd could also use his own smartphone in creating his short films. Ideally, a new continuity could be taken advantage of to poke a little more at the mystery of Project Carthage, the disappearance of Aelita's mother, and everything that spurred Hopper into creating the supercomputer, Lyoko, and XANA in the first place. While the Chronicles novel series is noncanon and contradicts the show's mythos in numerous ways, lore aspects from there could still be sprinkled into the reboot and retooled to fit the animated version of things.

I wonder if Darguad Media will ever make something out of the Code Lyoko franchise they acquired from the bankrupt Moonscoop?
I mean it’s been over a decade since Code Lyoko Evolution and so far we are still left with unanswered questions. I mean it’s considered non-canon by the original creators so it doesn’t count as an actual continuation of the original series.
What actually happened to Aelita’s mother Anthea?
Why was she kidnapped?
What was the purpose of Project Carthage?
Did the Men in Black give up on finding Waldo Schaeffer and his daughter?
Who were the other members of Project Carthage and what became of them?
At the very least we got the Code Lyoko Chronicles books to give us some ideas.
Not to mention a lot of dedicated fans who are making their own continuations for other fans until someone higher up decides to make something of the franchise along with hiring the original creators and most of the original voice actors.
