I still find it so funny that in Warrior the of Mind, Athena was probably looking to find an adult smart/wise person (tm) to claim, and to bring respect to wisdom with, and instead she got tiny enthusiast Odysseus, who instead tries to trick her right off the bat, and who I’m convinced has tried to prank her on more than one occasion-

Moments From Epic: the Troy Saga That Shall Live Rent Free In My Brain
The opening lines of The Horse and The Infant
"Who do you live for? Who do you fight for? Who do you wish for? Who do you try for?"
"AND TELEMAAACHUS!!!!!!!!!"
The overlapping of Zeus' and Odysseus' parts
The entirety of Just a Man
"So full speed aheaad!!!"
When Eurylochus first appears
"Watch where the birds fly. They will lead us to land!!!"
"Give me til sunrise, and if we don't return, then six hundred men can make this whole place burn!!"
"I had a challenge, a test of skill. A magic boar only the best could kill. One day a boy came for the thrill. A boy whose mind rivalled the boar's own will."
"Cause you're a warrior of the minddd!!!!!"
"Nah, don't be modest, I know you're a goddess. So let's be honest, You are Athena!! Athena!! Badass in the arena. Unmatched, witty, and queen of the best strategies we've seen."

I love how in EPIC, in Warrior of the Mind, when Odysseus says "Sounds like a plan, goddess and man, bestest of friends", Athena says "We'll see where it ends", and then in My Goodbye, she says "You're not looking for a mentor, I'm not looking for a friend"
AND THEN in God Games when Ares insults Telemachus (saying that Odysseus is "pathetic and weak like his son"), and Athena just loses it and goes all "hoLD YOUR TONGUE NOW, HIS SON'S MY FRIEND"
I mean sure she had character development and all, but it's just so funny for me, for some reason, that she keeps telling Odysseus that they're not friends she's just his mentor... And then she gets so protective over Telemachus

*crawls out of the void to hand you this and then leaves*
So I’ve been listening to a lot of Epic the Musical recently and this design for Athena just wouldn’t leave my brain, I wanted to emphasise more of her ‘goddess of war’ elements in this piece since I feel a lot of her portrayals gloss over that so I made her more muscular and armoured!! also strong women hot
I might clean this up at some point? I want to make some designs for the other gods too, I’m a Greek mythology girlie at heart

Ah. So Odysseus got the scar from the boar that Athena talks about in “Warrior of the Mind.”

Jumping on the Epic: The Musical bandwagon…
In Warrior of the Mind, when Athena appears, she asks Odysseus “have you forgotten your purpose? Let me remind you” but rather than sing about Odysseus, she sings about herself and her own vision for him (“Goddess of Wisdom, master of war, my life has one mission, to create the greatest warrior”). these are HER ideals for HERself, not him. And still, every time she sings, she only sings about herself— even when singing about him. “Maybe one day i’ll reach him and we’ll build his skills as I teach him” and “then they’ll see I know”… But the the greatest of Athena’s skills, which is especially shown in the clips of God Games at least thus far, is how adaptable she is. She will convince anyone of anything if it serves her goals. When she begins to sing again after speaking to Odysseus for the first time her refrain is again “maybe one day they’ll follow me”. it’s only AFTER Odysseus chimes in that she realizes if she truly wants him to follow her and gain HER glory and fame, she needs him to think she has his best interests in mind as well. So when Odysseus begins singing, she switches tune: “and we’ll make a greater tomorrow/maybe one day WE’LL reach them and we’ll make a greater tomorrow”. but Odysseus is smart too. He knows how to use other people’s weaknesses against them just as well as she does. Yes, he considered her a friend, but he also knows just how self-serving the gods are, and he knows any friendship with her only goes for as long as it’s in her best interest. He made her look foolish, like she’d chosen an idiot to patron. So when Odysseus calls her “selfish and prideful and vain” he knows she is all of these things, because he knows she only cares about him as long as he makes her look good.

I'm up to book 2 of the Thebaid and Tydeus is officially my favorite character. You begin to understand why Athena is much colder towards Diomedes in the Iliad compared to Odysseus.
In my last post I teased that Tydeus was the original Warrior of the Mind but after reading this book I think it would be more appropriate to consider him an anti-Odysseus.
Let me explain… Polyneices and Tydeus arrive banished to the city of Argos, where they become friends (after trying to murder each other) and King Adrastus marries them to his daughters. Adrastus promises to help them recover their kingdoms, starting with Polyneices. Tydeus offers himself as an ambassador so that Eteocles (brother of Polyneices) voluntarily gives up the throne.
Now, this episode is taken directly from book 4 of the Iliad, Agamemnon confronts Diomedes:
"In the palace of strong Eteocles many Thebans were gathered at a banquet; but not even there, being a guest and alone among so many, was the excellent horseman Tydeus troubled"
But while Odysseus is a master of speeches and knows how to win over his audience with the right words, Tydeus is extremely aggressive, arrogant and rude:
"…not with rhetoric and composed serious, humble and measured prayer; but he is rude in language. And so, that loud voice, naked of flattery and with daring and with much pride, spoke like this…"
Eteocles obviously refuses and Tydeus can think of no better way to end this embassy than to threaten the king with death and, to add insult to injury, publicly remind him that his father was his mother's son (did I forget to mention that Eteocles and Polyneices are children of Oedipus?)
"What do I wonder about, if the crime has been inherited from parents and grandparents? What should be expected from someone who was born from such incest in a desecrated bed?"
That was a low blow, man.
