People who think watamote is cringe have clearly never explained agoraphobia before. It’s a genuinely true to life depiction of just how badly anxiety and mental illness can effect people, it can make you do all kind of ‘embarrassing’ and ‘cringe’ things because the fear of what people think of you is so strong. And clearly they’ve never seen anything past the anime because as the manga progresses Tomoko does actually find friends and start to slowly get her shit together.
Mental illness is messy, it’s overtired, it’s scary, it can be ‘embarrassing’ and ‘cringe’. Being a Hikki/NEET isn’t something fun and quirky, it’s damaging.
While shows like Komj can’t communicate are still good, and do show agoraphobia in a pretty good way it’s not all cute girls and their supportive friends helping her get through life. It can also be isolating and saddening. And those negative symptoms need to be shown too, and talked about and explored.
TLDR: watamote is only cringe of you don’t understand how bad mental illness can effect people.
