Hi ABL! After watching episode 1 of Between Us, I was impressed with the level of "thirst" between Boun and Prem's characters in the last couple of scenes. Are there shows or scenes of shows, regardless of actual heat level, that you think did "thirst" well, regardless of how that's resolved at the time? Subjective, I know, but would love to get your take on this!

No shocker that Japan is the only one to field a micro on this list. Usually thirst takes more build up.

Defining THIRST

I make a distinction between thirst and other types of physical desire. This is just me and language.

Thirst usually leaps off the screen and has an edge of danger to it. Like they gonna get caught, or go out of control just from wanting to touch. They gonna die without physical contact. It's pure survival need. Japan kinda specializes in this.

There's no humor to thirst, but horny can get kinda cheeky. It's more fun and mutual (ee.g. KinnPorsche). More want than need. So it's more Thailand and Taiwan.

There's also yearning (e.g. The 8th Sense), which has a more emotional soul tether to it. Korea in particular, but also like GMMTV and lower heat prestige stuff, high school things for example (My School President).

And finally hunger, which I tend to think of as desire but with a nourishment component. It's I want what's MINE. Like Taejung in Cherry Blossoms After Winter.

The Eighth Sense inspired Top BL characters who were drunk drunk on screen ( played by actors who did it so well I think they woke up in a ditch at least once in their life.)

Taiwan : Gao Shi De in We best love 2. This man was drunk AND desperate AND horny. Sam Lin does everything well.

Thailand : Mark in Love Mechanics. Lord that boy had a drinking problem. War knew what he was doing.

China : Bai Luo Yin. Chinese teenage binge drinking so realistic you need to look away. Timmy Xu murdered his drunk scenes.

Korea : JAE WON. Errybody and their mommas has a drinking problem on that show but that hoe is a classic Korean terror.

....is not my favorite trope in a show but i have to say We Best Love: Fighting Mr 2nd made it bearable for me to watch without any doubt, no one does it like them. (when he put the bracelet back on on him i lost it and cried like a baby)

...is one of my favorite tropes but i was like which do i choose in this one? And the only one popping in my head was Be Loved In House: I Do. having to live with your new boss, that has funky ass rules you have to live and work by. ANd you are like nonononono we have to snoop and figure out how to get out of this mess? And you two also hate each other at the beginning? but then you both fall in love because oh no he is traumatized and he is hot? sign me the feck up. Also the medal work they do is not so shitty

..when you first watch start DNA Says Love You you think..how can this be a slow burn, i get it yeah amber being the new kid and le chien is still pining after this childhood friend that moved away but sure this somehow will work out..and then you get the plot twist and you are like we are in for a slow burn. Here we go! Disclaimer: I'm not going to list every Office BL™ these are just the ones I've seen. Sorry if your fav is missing! Let's start with our lowest scorer that definitely sets the tone for the bottom of the barrel.

CHECK OUT - The veneer is tracing paper if not completely transparent. Fucking in the office. Yeah. That's an HR violation for sure. Thankfully your company is too small to have an HR department. But you're definitely getting fired by your boss who is also your boyfriend who you are also cheating on.

BED FRIEND - The veneer is only considered opaque because everyone else in the office is blind as hell. HR is pretty sure you two fucked in the office bathroom, but they have no proof so could only give you a warning.

LOVE MATE - Veneer is 1-ply. I mean, if the whole office ships it, is it truely an issue? HR thanks you for keeping things PG.

The problem with *some BL office dramas is they seem to think that I care about their business success.

Like let me give some examples:

We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd knew how much I as an audience member cared about both the company our boys worked for and the project they were working on. How much? Not much. Except when it relates to their romance. Zhou Shu Yi having to work with Gao Shi De again because he works for his dad's company and they're doing a merger. Classic forced proximity. Love it.

This is the shit I wanna see. Their romance. The company could crash and burn for all I care. All I know about their work is that they are in an office and making some kind of software. That's it.

Here's another example. Cherry Magic! They work somewhere that make pens and stationary. Sometimes they have to do lots of unexplained paperwork. Do I care about the details surrounding the pen company paperwork? No. I don't. They know this and respect my time by not having a character spend an episode walking me through the pen company audit paperwork.

When a character has a big project, it is brief and has a clear connection to the romance arc. In season 1 and 2, work project moments just create big "reasons we cannot be together" crisis moments to be overcome.

*Step By Step, on the other hand, forced me to sit through employee training sessions and about one full length boardroom meetings per episode about products and marketing campaigns. I felt as bored watching those scenes as I would have if I was actually a member of a marketing team sitting in on a meeting that could have been an email.

Apart from the meeting where they first decide to use Put, there's no clear romantic drama or stakes in many of those scenes. It's literally just business. I do not care about Forge, they were just a client, and yet that client's name is now burned into my brain. I do not care about Olive and Pearl (?) or how their karaoke night marketing is gonna be amazing because look we got Put in it again. In fact, get that guy out of my face! All I care about is our main characters and their romance. And yet I must sit through board meeting after board meeting after...
