Imagine a world where Bruce got really into the occult when his parents died.
He did all the things. He bought a Ouija board. He went to psychics. He held seances.
He never did talk to his parents.
But, sometimes he wasn't as careful as he should have been. Once, just once, when a Ouija session once again failed to reach his parents, he left the planchet on the board and never said goodbye.
How long would it take for something to come through? How long would it take for Bruce and Alfred to notice? The manor is so very big and it has so many lovely dark places to hide.
If things get moved around, who would really notice? Especially once Bruce adopts the Robins. So many children causing so much chaos at all hours of the day and night.
No, I expect that no one would notice until Duke moves in. But even then, who knows how long it would take him to notice one big humanoid shape hidden away in some long forgotten attic room.

Legend of the band; AU Ghost! Queen x teen reader
*Author’s note*
Hey guys well this is a story that's been going through my head for a few days. I was originally gonna save this before Halloween but I figure I just go ahead and post this now in case I lost it amongst all my other writings in the near future. So background on this story it takes place in present day and the band members of Queen are ghosts.  Now I want to also put this out, I've inspired the ghosts designs from Guillermo Del Toro's film Crimson Peak. So just type in how the ghosts look and you'll see just why I've made the boys ghosts different colors.
Warnings: Swearing, death, slight attempted of assault (ALWAYS ASK PERMISSION BEFORE YOU TRY TO KISS SOMEONE), some horror elements?, fluff and angst.

It started off as a dare-pact that my friends wanted to do.  Every year around Halloween we try to do some sort of Halloween dare together whether it was going to a graveyard, using a Ouija board, or crashing a Halloween party in one of the upper class neighborhoods dressed as monsters and scare the shit out of them.
It was either one person or we would do it as the entire group and this year we decided to do our next Halloween dare as a group.  The ringleader of the group Aaron gathered us up in our private clubhouse (his basement) and we were all gathered around to discuss just what we were going to do.
“Right, I call this meeting of the Halloween dare to order.” Aaron proclaimed.
“So what’s the plan for this year?” asked Brandon.
“How bout we go downtown and scare the little kids at the daycare during their Halloween party?” suggested Jake.
“No that’s just cruel even for us.” Said Amy.
“I agree.” I added. “Besides you just want to do that cause you’re little brother’s gonna be there, right?”
“So what? The little asshole got me into trouble last week. He deserves some payback.” Jake hissed.
“Alright Jake settle down. Okay so we had Amy and Susan do the Ouija board last year.”
“Which I still don’t forgive you guys. I swear I think my house is still haunted.” Susan said.
“Oh I’ve got it!” Proclaimed Brandon.
“Lay it on us Bran.” Aaron said.
“Three words for you guys. Rockfield. Farm. studios.” At that point everyone went silent.
“ARE YOU INSANE!?!?” exclaimed Amy.
“Yeah Brandon do you want to commit suicide or something!? Do you hate life!?” Jake snapped.
“Brandon, why in the fuck would you suggest that?” I asked.
“Oh come on! We’ve done practically the same stupid shit every time. Yeah sure the Ouija board could do some serious things but never have we actually tried to go to a real haunted house. So why not Rockfield farm?”
“Wait, I don’t get it. What’s Rockfield farm?” Susan asked.  Susan was the recent member to join the horror crew when she moved here from Michigan. Almost no one wanted to speak that was until I finally told her the legend.
“Rockfield farm was used as a recording studio a long time ago. Like back in the 70’s. Anyway there was this up and coming band called Queen. You know the ones who made the song Killer Queen?”
“Oh yeah my mom still has her vinyl record of that album.” Susan said.
“Well anyway, in the summer of 1975 they went to record their next record. Legend says it would’ve been their greatest album yet. It could’ve really made them even more famous than they were. But—an accident occurred at that farm.”
“What happened?” she asked.
“Well that’s where the story gets a little iffy. There have been several theories throughout time on what happened.” I explained.
“One theory is that an electrical fire happened while the band was in the studio, and they couldn’t escape in time and ended up being burned alive.” Jake said.
“Another theory is that someone broke into the property and slaughtered the band mates in their sleep.” Amy said.
“A slightly different version to that theory is that it was actually the band’s assistant that killed them in cold blood. Apparently he was in love with the front man. And in rejection he slaughtered the whole band before killing himself.”
“Whichever story you choose to believe in, it is said that the ghosts of the band members still haunt the property to this day. And anyone who has entered inside, is never seen again.” Aaron finished.
“Which is why not even I will go there.” Jake emphasized.
“Oh what’s wrong Jake? Don’t got the balls to make a drive up there and spend the night in the haunted farm?” teased Brandon.
“Shut up arsehole! At least I have balls.” Brandon was just about to pounce on Jake when Amy stopped the two of them by pushing Brandon back onto the floor and I said.
“Look, I thought it was foolish enough to go to the graveyard at night. But this—this is foolishness. No way am I gonna be possessed by a ghost or anything like that.”
“You know what you guys are all chicken!” Brandon exclaimed. “We’ve done almost every single Halloween dare known to man and you lot are scared to go to a little haunted house in the country and spend the night there.”
“He’s right.” Aaron finally spoke up.
“I’m sorry what?” Amy snapped.
“He’s right. We’ve been pulling out the same stuff every year but with different people. There’s no real haunted places here in the city but Rockfield is the closest thing we can get to.”
“Thank you!” Brandon exclaimed.
“Aaron, I swear to god if you make me go to that place we are finished! Do you hear me finished!” Amy snapped as she walked right up towards her boyfriend of 3 years.
“Sorry babe, I’ve made my mind up. We’ll leave in 2 days. Meeting adjourned.” Oh god what has Brandon done?
Later that night I was staring up at the full moon from my window when my nana came in.
“I thought I had told you to go to bed sweetheart. You’ve got school in the morning.”
“Couldn’t sleep nana.” I said solemnly.
“Alright, what’s wrong?” she said as she came up and sat down next to me.
“Just something my friends want me to do.”
“Those troublemakers that always make you trespass on private property? Or crash a party? Honestly (y/n) I don’t know why you hang out with kids like that.”
“They’re my friends nana. They always got my back when I need them.” She sighed and surrendered.
“Alright, alright. But what’s gotten you so rattled up?” now I couldn’t really tell her just what was going on.  She’d never let me go on a road trip to Rockfield farm so I had to think of something.
“They—they suggested going on a trip and…..I don’t like to leave you alone.” She smiled at me and tucked a strand of hair.
“Oh poppet. I maybe old but I’m not frail. How long are you planning on leaving?”
“It’s just for Halloween. We’ll be back the next day.”
“Okay then. Now even though I don’t approve of your friends behavior, I can’t stop you from going out Halloween night. Just promise you’ll stay out of trouble.”
“I will.” That’s a promise that not even I know how to keep. “And you’re sure you’ll be fine?”
“Yes, yes. And don’t worry, your father won’t hear a thing from me.”
“Really?”
“I’m his mother. I don’t have to tell him anything.” She winked at me. “Now go to sleep.” She lectured me before giving me a kiss goodnight and we both told each other I love you.
Two days later it was time.  Right after school, we all piled in Brandon’s RV and we drove the long drive to the country side to Rockfield studios.  Just as the sun was about to set, we finally arrived at the farm.
God it looks even more desolated and frightening than the pictures.  The entire housing was swamped with vines, weeds, and any other ounce that Mother Nature could throw at it.  The bricks at certain spots were chipped away or even rotting away (how that’s possible I don’t know).
We slowly walked up towards the main house and we just stood before it fearfully.
“Whose gonna go in first?” Amy asked.
“I vote our raining president of this idea Brandon.” Jake said.
“I second that.” Amy replied.
“Ditto.” Said Susan.
“Fine I’ll go in first.” Brandon said as he walked up the steps of the deck before standing before the front door.  He just stood there, still as a statue before Jake cried out.
“Well go on smartass and go in already!”
“I’m going I’m going!” Brandon snapped back.  He took the door handle and slowly opened the door which made an eerie creaking sound. He took one small step into the house before he was suddenly pulled in.
“BRANDON!” we all cried out.  Soon we all piled into the house and it was so dark you could barely make out what was in front of you.  The door suddenly slammed loudly behind us which made a few of us jump.
“Come on Brandon, this isn’t funny!” Jake called out.
“Brandon?” Aaron spoke up.
“Brandon seriously if this is a joke it’s not AHHH!!!” Amy spoke before suddenly screaming as something grabbed her.  We all soon began screaming before a laugh rang out.  Coming out from underneath a white sheet was Brandon.
“You guys should’ve seen your faces!” he laughed.
“You sick fuck who does that!?” Amy said as she began to punch him as hard as she could.
“That wasn’t funny Brandon.” I scowled.
“It was pretty funny!”
“Guys I think I found the light’s switch.” Susan said as she then flipped a switch on and soon the lights came on.
“Okay so we’re here now. Why not have a look around?” Brandon suggested.
“Man do you not know your horror film goofs!? If we split up, the ghosts will hunt us down one. By. one. Starting with the good looking comedy relief guy, me!” Jake proclaimed.
“Get a grip Jake! We’ll split up into pairs. Amy and I will go together and take the barn. (Y/n) you and Susan…..”
“Oh hell no. I can’t even stand to be near Brandon right now!”
“Oh what you a wittle scaredy cat Jakey-wakey?” Brandon teased.
“SHUT UP!!!”
“Alright! Jake you and (Y/n) go take the living room, and Susan you and Brandon can take the upstairs.” Aaron said breaking up the fight with the boys.  I rolled my eyes cause I knew Jake was gonna try to flirt around with me (he’s been doing that since the start of secondary school).
“I can dig with that.” Jake said as he came right up beside me.
“Do you seriously hate me Aaron?” I muttered before we finally split up.
Jake and I came to the living room and saw a small piano right there in the middle of the room, and jointed next to the living room was the kitchen.
“Pretty spooky huh? Just imagine if this piano started playing on its own. But no worries (Y/n), if you get scared you can hold onto me and I’ll protect you.”
“My hero.” I muttered sarcastically.  It was then something caught my eye.  I walked towards a table to see what looked like an old photo album.  I blew away the dust and wiped the cover to see the writing say.
PROGRESS ON LATEST ALBUM
“Whatcha got there?” Jake said as he came up to me and shined his phone flashlight down on the photo album.
“It’s an old photo album book.” Jake scoffed.
“Wow. The only person who has stuff like that are my parents. Man thank god we have technology nowadays. Otherwise no one would get to see my handsome face.” Why does this man even exist? Seriously I don’t see why all the girls on the cheer squad go for him?
“And what a shame that would’ve been.” I muttered as I opened the book up.
“I know right?!” I turned the next page and there were a few photos of Queen inside a recording studio of sorts and below it a caption that spelled,
AT HARD WORK WITH THE LADS. R.M.T.
“What does RMT stand for?”
“I don’t know. Could be some sort of acronym or something. Maybe initials for a name.”
“Well you’re an expert on all those old guys that existed back in the Medieval ages. What were the names of the band that died here?”
“It wasn’t the Medieval ages Jake. It was 40 years ago. And I don’t really know their names. I just know them as Queen.” I flipped to the next page to see a man with long black hair at the piano and the caption under that said.
FRED AT PIANO - Bri.
“Fred huh? He doesn’t look like a Fred to me. And who signs off with Bri?” I shook my head and continued to flip through the pages.  Each picture were of the band doing certain things while recording or just being around the farm, and each picture was signed with initials RMT, JD, FM, or BRI.  Finally the last picture was all four of them together.
“Check out the date.” I said.  In the picture it read 8-13-75. “This was taken the day when the band died.”
“Holy shit you’re right. They must’ve taken this picture just before whatever happened, happened.”
“They look so young.” I said solemnly.
“Yeah. But if they had lived they’d be like—our grandparents by now.” Suddenly I heard a voice.
No wait it was—singing.  I looked around trying to find out where the singing was coming from.  It was—beautiful. Hypnotic almost.  It was the most beautiful sound I ever heard.
“(/n). (Y/n)! Oi (Y/n)!” I was snapped out of it by Jake. “Jesus you looked like you were in a trance or something.”
“Was I? Sorry I….”
“No need to apologize. Hell if it was all about me, then maybe I’ll let it slid.” He said as he stroked up my arm.
“Jake! I’ve tried to let you down easy but please for the last time. I don’t like you that way! So stop with the flirting!”
“Oh c’mon (Y/n). What is there about me that you don’t like?” Gee where do I begin? “C’mon just give me a chance.” He walked closer to me but I tried to push him away.
“No Jake stop! Back off!” suddenly the fireplace just a few feet away from us ignited.  The flames reached as high as they could and call my crazy but I thought I could see someone’s face in the fire.  Jake jumped away from me and that’s when we heard the piano being played.

It was a random play on the keys at a very fast pace on the upper keys while also hitting a couple of the lower keys every now and then.  
“What the f—” the piano then hit a single key for a couple of beats before finally changing tune to that of a marching tune.  Like someone was coming towards you and you could just hear the beat of their footsteps.
Getting freaked out by the piano, Jake ran screaming out of the living room while I was just frozen in place.  The fireplace suddenly turned off but there was still some sort of light.  I slowly turned around and saw a yellow light ball shining right there.  But it wasn’t just some random ball or something.
This was some sort of spiritual ball because I could see smoke slowly dancing around it as it floated before me.  I wanted to run but I was either too scared or stunned by what just happened.  It was then I heard the singing come back, and it was coming from this spiritual matter in front of me.
And I don’t know how or why but—it made me feel safe.  Listening to the singing that came from this ball, it was like being wrapped up tightly in a warm hug.  Or sleeping in your own bed, like the weight of the world has been dropped from you.
I soon found myself walking towards the yellow spirit ball.  It moved backwards as I walked towards it.  It floated towards the fireplace and I wouldn’t have known if I weren’t in my trance-like state once again, but the fireplace opened up to reveal a long corridor.
*3rd Person POV*
As Jake ran on ahead he soon tackled into someone and that someone ended up being Amy.
“What the hell Jake!? Get off me you perv!”
“Guys! Guys! Guys! P-p-p-p-pi….pi-gh…..(y/n)…..”
“Stop your blabbering and tell us what happened!?” Aaron said as he forced Jake off his girlfriend and helped her up.
“Piano……playing itself. Fireplace……flames go up.”
“What’s he blabbering about?” Brandon’s voice soon spoke up as he and Susan came around the hallway.
“Where’s (Y/n)?” Susan asked worriedly.  They all looked at Jake who still had a look of fright on his face.  They quickly raced towards the living room and they all gasped to see (Y/n) just about to turn right of the long corridor that stood them.
“What the hell!”
“Why did you leave her you dumbass!?”
“(Y/n)!” her friends tried to run after her but the fireplace soon closed back up and the flames were once again fully ignited.  Soon coming out of the flames was a pure white figure.
His hair was all curly and long like a poodle.  He wore a few necklaces 2-3 which were wrapped around his neck while the other one draped over his bare chest due to his shirt having a few of the buttons undone. But what had the kids most horrified was that this man was transparent.
Gentle wisps of smoke flowed from his hair, fingers, and even the cut along his cheek which seeped out small amounts of ghost blood.  His eyes which were a pure dark grey stared right at the young teenagers and he let out a haunting whisper.
“She belongs……to us!” at that phrase the teens all screamed and ran off.  The girls ran towards the backway while the boys ran up the stairs.  The girls raced out towards the barn and hid underneath a hay cart.
“Was that a……” Susan started off.
“No! It couldn’t have been! It’s impossible!” Amy exclaimed in denial.
“Oh it’s entirely possible.” A male voice soon spoke up.  They slowly turned their heads and saw another ghost.
Unlike the one they saw earlier, this one was a blue spirit with haunting ocean like eyes.  His hair was long and flowing and he wore a smug grin on his face.  Susan and Amy were in gawk at this ghost. “Now, now ladies I know I’m a looker but there’s no need to stare.”
They then screamed as they tried to get out but just before they could leave the barn, the doors suddenly shut.
“Leaving so soon? Oh that’s not fair. Not before I’ve had the chance to know your names. God it’s been so long since female company have come to this farm.” Susan and Amy were terrified at the point.  They tried to get the doors open but it was all in vain.  
Suddenly they felt themselves being levitated up in the air and the ghost appeared before them and said in a low, haunting tone.
“And the three of us are gonna have such fun together.” Only the piercing, terrified screams of the girls echoed through the barn.
Back in the house, Brandon, Jake and Aaron all headed for the basement in one of the tightest rooms the house had.  They all panted heavily and Aaron said.
“Did—you guys see what I saw?”
“You mean that curly haired ghost that just said (Y/n) belongs to them. No.” Brandon said.
“Same.” Jake said. The room suddenly got colder than it was, so cold in fact that the boys could now see their breath.  It was then Jake suddenly felt something pick him up by his throat.  He squirmed in the grip of the invisible force.
“Jake!” Aaron called out but then suddenly he and Brandon were pushed up against the wall and they couldn’t move.  No matter how much they squirmed, they couldn’t budge an inch.  Suddenly Jake was thrown down onto the small rickety bed and that’s when he appeared.
A fully black ghost with long hair.  He looked younger than the last ghost they saw but there was something about him that felt—angry.  The young black ghost turned to Jake and his voice which was a soft, honey like tone say.
“If I remember, No always means No. No matter who it is.” He slowly crawled on top of Jake pinning his arms down. “But since you can’t seem to understand what it feels like to be in such a vulnerable position, maybe I should show you.” by the end of his statement his voice suddenly got lower, darker.  Almost sinister.
Through Jake’s eyes he saw as this ghost’s face actually morphed into the Devil himself. Burned and scarred with pure red and black eyes.  Jake screamed in pure terror.
*My POV*
I kept following the light as well as the voice.  The beautiful, soulful, most angelic voice.  God it was—almost inhuman of how this voice could sing.  With such gentleness but also control it when he belted out a note or a phrase.
The light ball quickly faded away and had now become a record player with an album that stood right up against it.  I slowly reached out for it and it read.
QUEEN
A NIGHT AT THE OPERA.
As I held it in my hands there was a moment where I heard screaming.  Wait my friends? They were……
“Play the record darling.” The voice soothed me.  I felt a gentle caress under my chin.  I closed my eyes and took out the record and placed it on the record player. “Play it, play it. You know you want to.” The voice continued to coo.  I turned the record on, lifted the needle but just before I could place it at the top the voice whispered to me again, “Lower.”
I adjusted the needle as the voice continued to whisper lower again and again softly in my ear.
“There!” it suddenly hissed out which frightened me and forced me to let go of the needle and soon a quartet of voices soon began to sing with no instrument backup.

My god. This……this really was Queen.  I mean I’ve only really heard a few of their songs but this was definitely them.  The way their voices melded together in perfect harmony.  The piano soon came in and I sat down by the record player and just took in this song.
I literally felt like my soul was being sucked out as the vocals took me on a trip.  Then the bass picked up as the leading front man started singing the song, the very voice I’ve been hearing from the spirit force earlier.
As the song continued to play and went on a brief instrumental break, I looked at the record to see just what this song was called because I hadn’t heard a single word that stands out except Mama.  I then saw a finger point to the second to last song.  I looked up and shocked to see one of the band member’s ghost right there with me.
His entire ghost form was the same yellow color as the spirit ball from earlier, his wild hair went down to shoulders and he had an overbite but somehow it worked on him. He looked pretty exotic (by that I knew he wasn’t from London, maybe India or something).  He nodded and gestured to the song again.  I looked down at it and read it out loud.
“Bohemian Rhapsody?” he smiled happily and soon a guitar solo came on.  But along with that, I heard the same guitar playing the same notes, almost as if—holy shit!
A curly haired pure white ghost soon held a red guitar and began playing the exact guitar solo right there.  I turned to the ghost beside me who was still smiling devilishly and he gestured for me to look back at the guitarist.  As I watched the white ghost play the guitar, I was amazed and mesmerized by how he played the guitar.
As a Classic Rock fan I’ve seen the greatest guitar players such as Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Alex Lifeson, and Eddie Van Halen, but this guy—this was unlike anything I’ve ever seen a guitarist do or even play.  It was like his guitar was actually singing a solo, instead of just being an instrument.  Like it was a person, and she sang beautifully.
The song then went quiet as the lights went out and only a single piano note was now playing over and over.  Soon the silhouette of the ghost that led me here stood before me as a single spotlight hit him.  And I don’t know whether the vocals suddenly turned off or whatever but I could actually hear singing right there.
Next thing I know, the yellow and white ghosts are now joined up with a soft blue and pure black ghost.  The four of them standing together in like a diamond shape patter with the yellow and white ghost at top and bottom respectively, the blue ghost was on my right while the black was on the left.  
The four of them once again jointed in a quartet harmony before suddenly their voices boomed out like a canon firing.  And I know it sounds crazy but I swear I think they duplicated themselves about a dozen times to get that full powerful choir sound.  The blue ghost then started to sing in a really high falsetto tone while the yellow ghost backed him up on the lower range before making his voice waver.
This pattern continued as the front man sung again softly and then the other three ghosts (or copies) backed him up.  Wow this song it’s—literally unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.  The way it started soft before BAM exploding right in your face. Just like an Opera.
I bopped my head along to the beat softly to the beat and then when the rock out section came on. I’ll admit I banged my head as hard as I could (may come to regret it later but I didn’t care).  The setting soon changed to an actual rock and roll concert stage and I saw all four of them up on the stage.  
The black ghost on bass, the blue playing the drums, the white playing his guitar and the yellow one center stage, well more like everywhere as he strutted around and sung as loudly as he could.
I smiled and stood up and couldn’t help but jump up and down as I rocked out along with them. The yellow ghost soon went back to the piano and began playing it and as the four ghosts vocalized softly, the song slowly died off the hard rock and grew soft once again.  The yellow ghost sang the last verse as the piano solely took over now just before the white ghost played his guitar for the last time.
Then when the soft bang of a gong, the song ended and the room went dark once more.
“That’s it? Oh come on please that can’t be the end of the song!” the lights soon came back on and I now found myself in a recording studio.  The four ghosts all standing there.  The yellow one came up to me with a soft smile and gently touched the center of my forehead with his index and tall fingers and I felt this warmth come over my yet again.
“We’ve got more songs than that dear, believe me. But this is the one we’re most proudest of.” His normal voice spoke to me.  
“It was either that or I’m in love with my car.” The white ghost groaned out.
“I told you before Brian it’s a metaphor!” the blue ghost snapped.
“After all these years Roger it’s still unusual. What exactly are you doing to that car?” the black ghost sassed.
“Ignore him darling. He’s just a little peeved that after all the fussing and locking himself in a cupboard, his song didn’t get the chance to go on the B side to our single. Which is my masterpiece.” The yellow ghost told me.
“Umm…..not to sound cruel but, I mean I know you guys are Queen but uhh—what are your names?”
“Oh yes that. Silly me. You my darling may call me Freddie Mercury.” The yellow ghost introduced himself with a twirl.
“Brian May. Thank you again for giving us a chance to show you our hard work.” The white ghost introduced himself.  Wow he sure was polite.
“Roger Taylor. And I must say my dear, you are quite adorable, especially when you let loose and rock out.” The blue ghost gave me a wink.  Normally I wouldn’t give flirting a second glance, especially after Jake’s insistent flirting, but for some reason I couldn’t help but blush at his compliment.
“Please forgive him. He always goes crazy over a pretty girl. John Deacon it’s lovely to meet you.” The black ghost said as he gave me a greeting bow of his head.  Freddie, Brian, Roger and John, these guys were the men behind Queen.
“It’s—an honor to meet you four. I’m (Y/n). So—all the times people have been coming into the studio, all you wanted was for someone to listen to your album?”
“Yes, but no one would stick around. All because we’re ghosts.” Freddie whined as he pouted and crossed his arms over his chest.
“And you were the only one who had any sense of musical taste.” Roger pointed out my Hendrix shirt.  I rubbed the back of my neck and said.
“Yeah, kinda a music geek. Mostly through classic rock. But none of my friends—oh my god my friends! What did—those screams from earlier. What did you guys do to them?!”
“Take it easy lovie, your friends are safe and unharmed.” Roger assured me.
“Really?”
“Yes. I mean minus the fright we might’ve caused them, they’re completely fine. They’re passed out in that van of yours outside right now.” Brian said.
“Though Deacy dear, I must admit you truly traumatized that one young boy earlier. I could barely keep my hold on (Y/n)’s mind to bring her here cause of the screaming you had that boy doing.” Freddie said.
“Who? You mean Jake?” I asked.
“What he did to you back there. It—wasn’t right. If a woman says no, it means no.” John growled softly.
“Thanks John. I’ve tried telling him for years I never once liked him like that, but any chance we’re alone he tries to come onto me. I was getting sick and tired of it.”
“Well not to worries dear, I think from what John did to him, he’ll never bother you again for a long time.” Roger said as he ruffled John’s hair up.  John pushed his hand off his head and he came up to me and asked.
“You sure he didn’t hurt you?”
“I’m fine, really. I’m okay.” He sighed in relief.
“Hey guys,” they all looked at me giving me their full attention. “I—I don’t mean to get personal with you all. But uhh……How did you guys…..forget it. You don’t have to answer it. It’s probably none of my business.”
“It’s not? Then why so interested?” asked Brian.  He didn’t ask it out of annoyance, I could genuinely hear the concern in his voice.
“Well I was gonna ask, how did you guys—you know……”
“Die?” they all said together.  I nodded.
“Well dear as much as we would like to tell you, we can’t.” Freddie said.
“Yeah I get it. I mean if I were in your shoes I wouldn’t either.”
“It’s not that (Y/n).” John said.  I looked at him confused, “See while we remember some parts of our lives as humans. The day we died—that part’s fuzzy.”
“For decades we’ve tried to remember what had happened but every time we try it just—doesn’t come around.” Brian finished.  Oh wow I never knew that that could happen when you become a ghost.  Not knowing how you die and have to remain here on Earth.
“Tell us dear, what all has been said about our deaths?” Freddie asked me as he leaned sat down on the chair and rest his chin on his hand.
“Well there are several theories. The ones I know about are an electrical fire in this studio and you guys being trapped inside.”
“Sounds boring.” Freddie bluntly stated.  The other three looked at him questioningly.
“What else?” asked Roger.
“Well another theory is that someone snuck in and massacred you guys. Some people even go into detail about the homicide and what happened to each of you. I—I was honestly heartbroken hearing that and cried.”
“Aww you sweet thing.” Freddie and Roger cooed.
“A slight alteration to that theory is that it was a—day to day manager you guys had was the one to kill you guys.”
“Oh him. Well we’re proud to say he’s no longer with us anymore.” Roger said.
“I think I remember that he also died along with us. And if he did, he’s right where he belongs cause we haven’t seen him since our death. Thank god.” said John.  I softly smiled before letting out a soft yawn.
“It’s getting late, you should get some sleep.” Brian said to me.
“Where can I sleep at?” I asked.
“You could pick one of our old rooms.” Roger suggested.
“Just hope you don’t mind sleeping on rickety old beds.” Brian softly laughed.  I softly laughed and said.
“Okay uhh…..John do you mind if I take yours?”
“Not at all. Follow me.” I followed behind him and we walked out of the recording studio and back to the main house.  He walked down the steps to the basement and he said, “Just a word of warning, it’s small and it gets colder than the other rooms. You sure you still want it?”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine.” We came to the bottom of the steps and I saw that it was indeed a tiny room. Kinda reminded me of my childhood room when my parents and I were living in a small flat.
“Again I apologize, I didn’t choose this room. Yet I’m bound to it for all eternity.” He said as he placed his hand on the dresser but it went right through it. “Kinda the price for being the youngest and most forgetful member of the band.”
“I never thought that.” He turned towards me. “From the songs I’ve heard on your three albums, your basslines are unique and easily recognizable. Especially this one song uhh—god it’s been awhile since I listened to it what’s it called…..Lies?”
“Liar?”
“That’s it! That solo is phenomenal.” He softly smiled and thanked me.  I walked towards the small bed and tucked myself in suddenly feeling tired than I was before.
“Thanks again for allowing me to take your room tonight John.”
“Anytime. Sleep well (y/n).” I then shut my eyes and finally fell asleep.
*John’s POV*
I don’t know how to explain it.  Normally I’d never allow anyone to try and sleep in my room.  All the humans that have entered this farm whether on a dare or trying to discover the secrets of this place, I’ve made sure to keep out anyone by frightening them away.
But this young girl there was something—familiar about her.  Was she—no. No that’s impossible.  I’m crazy for even suggesting it, there’s no way that’s possible.  It’s a one in a billion chances.  I sat there in the corner of my room and watched her sleep, while trying to make sense on why I’m feeling this strange pull towards her.
*My POV*
2 weeks after that night, the guys actually gave me the Night at the Opera record and I was just amazed by all the songs it had, but my favorite song will always be Bohemian Rhapsody.  But there was another song called ‘You’re my best friend’ (written by John) that had a special connection with me.
Right now I was helping my nana with some reorganizing in the attic when I came across an old box of stuff.  I opened it up and was first greeted with some dust.  I let out a sneeze as I wiped the dust out of my face before pulling out a beautiful wedding dress.
“Nana! What’s this?” she climbed up the stairs and when she saw me, her face grew solemn. She walked up towards me and knelt down beside me.
“Now this is something I haven’t seen in years. This—was my wedding dress.”
“It’s beautiful.” I said as I stroked through the fabric.
“Yeah. But oh did I look like a balloon in it. I was pregnant with your father at the time I got married.” She went through the box and soon pulled out a photo album and opened it up. “See, this was me on my wedding day with—with your grandfather.” I looked down and I was shocked.
There was her and John standing together.  The two of them smiling as the picture was being taken.  Her back to John’s chest and his arms wrapped around her pregnant stomach.
“It was a surprise, the pregnancy. And we were incredibly young but—John praised about becoming a father. But then…….” She stopped and wiped away her tears.
“Nana are—are you okay?” she sniffled and dabbed her eyes and said.
“Yes. Yes poppet I’ll be okay. Sorry. It’s just—so hard, even after over 40 years. He was my best friend, the love of my life. I wish your father talked more about your grandfather to you. Oh he would’ve loved you soo much dear. Spoiled you rotten probably.”
Oh if only she knew. Wow so—my grandfather is John Deacon. Wow that’s—not everyone can say something like that.
“What….what was grandfather like?” I asked her.
“Well, we met way back in 1974 at a Disco club. My friends and I were out for a girls night out when—” she then proceeded to tell me the entire story of how she and granddad met and fell in love.
Hearing it from her own voice, it was like something out of a fairytale.  She and John really did love each other and it seemed like they would’ve stayed together forever had what happened to Queen not occurred.
“Did—the police ever tell you what happened?” I asked her.
“For years I tried to get them to give me an answer. But the case went cold and they just ruled it as accidental. I had to live with that heartbreak ever since. So I raised your father as a single parent because there wasn’t anyone like John Richard Deacon.” I leaned against her shoulder nuzzling her arm.
She wrapped her arm around my head and gave me a soft kiss to my head.  Together the two of us sat there and she told me as many stories as she could remember between her and John.

3. 🎃 Candy Corn: What's your favourite kind of candy?  Marshmallow Circus Peanuts
4. 👻 Vampire:  What is your favourite supernatural creature?
I like Frankenstein, deformed phantoms, and creatures that are half human / half something else. The souls that hide from the world and don’t see their own beauty. They are endearing to me.
5. 🎃 Witch: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
To physically travel backwards through every decade (staying a long time in the 1970s & 1980s)
6. 👻 Trick or treat: What was your favourite Halloween costume?
 That I wore? I might say, the baby clown costume that my mom and grandma dressed me in for my 2nd or 3rd Halloween. My face was painted and I had a curly rainbow wig on my head. I was dressed in a puffy red and white polka-dot jumpsuit, and looked like a circus performer. I had no idea what was going on though - I was so very young, I can’t remember anything about it (just photos of me that night).

8. 👻 Ouija Board: If you could change your name, what would you change it to?
I’ve always liked my name Elizabeth, cause it suits my old soul. I also like the name Chelsea, which is the other name my mom had picked out for me. So I’d maybe choose that one.
9. 🎃 Graveyard: Do you know any good scary stories?  Probably, yeah. I never want to scare anyone though. I’d do a pitiful job at it.
10. 👻 Skeleton: Have you ever broken a bone?  No. (*knock on wood again*)

12. 👻 Horror flick: Do you like scary movies? If so, which one is your favourite?  
I like artsy and intellectual horror films. Nothing too gory though. I once became a vegetarian for a year after watching House By The Cemetery. Not to sound too typical, but I started out watching Argento films and they led me to other foreign films. I still like those films : my favourites are Inferno and Profondo Rosso. 70s & 80s rather obscure ones are my favourite. Supernatural thrillers always intrigue me, so I often enjoy those as well. I’m not sure that I have a favourite horror movie actually.
13. 🎃 Haunted house:  Would you prefer to live in the city or the country? 
It depends on the city. I’ve lived in the countryside my entire life so far, but I get weary of it at times. I’d have to build up some gumption to live in a city. I tried it once and it didn’t work out for me.
14. 👻 Zombie: Do you think that you could survive a zombie apocalypse?
 Only if the zombies were charmed by me. I would be very sweet and tend to their wounds. Win them over with kindness (if they have some brain tissue and heart left in them). I’d make sure they knew that I could be trusted never to harm them.
15. 🎃 Cauldron: What kind of potion would you make if you had the opportunity? 
 An eternal life potion for my mom. If she could stay forever as the person she is in this lifetime. I’m very attached to her being (the way it is now), and I fear that in the next life I may not recognise her soul within an unfamiliar face.
16. 👻 Full moon: Do you prefer nighttime or daytime?  The night
17. 🎃 Corn maze:  What is your favourite autumn activity? 
Definitely not a corn maze lol!  I used to volunteer for many years at a historical farm and sell apple cider with my grandma. We haven’t been able to do that the past few years, but I would look forward to it.
18. 👻 Broomstick: What exciting places have you travelled to?
I went to Pittsburgh back in 2018 and visited the Andy Warhol (Art Papa) museum and his gravestone. It is one of the most special experiences I have had so far.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Complete Easter Egg and Reference Guide

The following contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 2. 
The Umbrella Academy wears its influences on its sleeve. Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s original comic and the Netflix series it was adapted into pay a great debt to properties like X-Men, Doom Patrol, and even The Royal Tenenbaums.
Now for its second season, The Umbrella Academy is even more devoted to Easter eggs, references, and many other real life and pop culture homages. This batch of episodes takes the Hargreeves family back to the early ‘60s where they encounter a whole new host of inspirations.
“There are tons,” showrunner Steve Blackman says of season 2 Easter eggs. “We specifically wanted to sit down and say, ‘Here are the Easter eggs we want to put in, let’s make a list of them.’ They’re everywhere. I think the fans will get a real kick once you start realizing what we’ve put in.”
Follow along with us as we catalogue every possible Easter egg and reference in The Umbrella Academy season 2. Hopefully we can clarify a thing or two about this season along the way. And hopefully you, dear reader, can help point out what we surely missed.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 1: Right Back Where We Started
This episode takes its name from Maxine Nightingale’s “Right Back Where We Started From.” And indeed that song plays as the Hargreeves family arrives in the ‘60s and tries to acclimate to their surroundings. 
The season opens with the lunar-induced apocalypse that kills billions of people on Earth. The world’s destruction was essentially confirmed at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 1 but is re-confirmed here. In the original comic book, the planet is destroyed midway through volume 2 “Dallas” when Hazel and Cha-Cha detonate a nuke they stole from Reginald Hargreeves’s stash. Thankfully in this season, just as in “Dallas,” The Umbrella Academy makes it safely back in time and gets a chance to undo things.
For organizational purposes here is where each member of The Umbrella Academy lands in the early 1960s, along with what movie is playing on the local cinema’s marquee:
February 11, 1960 – Klaus and Ben –  The movie is Curse of the Undead.
1961 – Allison – The movie is The Curse of the Werewolf.
1962 – Luther – Movie not visible.
September 1, 1963 – Diego – Movie not visible.
October 12, 1963 – Vanya – The movie is Kiss of the Vampire.
November 25, 1963 – Five – Movie is still Kiss of the Vampire.
The song playing during this latest apocalypse is Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.”
This thrilling series finale-esque apocalypse sequence also provides viewers with a decent reminder of what each Umbrella siblings’ power is:
Vanya uses sound to generate enormous, explosive power. 
Klaus can communicate with the dead and in this instance is even able to summon the ghosts of U.S. soldiers to do battle against the Soviets.
Luther is super strong. And surprisingly flame retardant. 
Ben (still dead) is able to produce monstrous tentacles from his stomach. In the comic series it is explained that he summons monsters from another dimension. 
Allison quite literally possesses the power of suggestion. Her phrase “I heard a rumor” bewitches whoever hears it to do what she says. 
Diego is super accurate with knives and seemingly takes his combat training more seriously than anyone in the Academy. In the comics, Diego  is able to survive without breathing but for the second season in the row that appears to have not made it to the TV show. “You got Jason Momoa doing that a hundred times better anyway,” David Castañeda told Den of Geek during a set visit. 
Number Five can travel through time but obviously rather imprecisely. He uses that power on a smaller scale to pop through space-time during fist fights.
Hazel makes his triumphant and brief return to the series…looking somewhere between Nick Offerman and Gandalf. He likes to call Five “old-timer” because despite having his childhood body, Five is actually in his late ‘50s. 
This time around, the world will end on November 25, 1963 – notably three days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas. 
Diego trots out a Star Wars joke about Luke Skywalker’s daddy issues that obviously no one in the asylum is able to understand, with Star Wars 14 years away from release. 
Diego’s friend at the hospital is new character Lila, played by Ritu Arya. Lila has no comparable character in the comic series and is purely a show invention. Arya is best known for her work in Humans and Last Christmas.
Klaus and Ben were in San Francisco for three years before heading back to Dallas. In that time, Klaus started a cult. California was a hotspot for cults in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Klaus was a little ahead of the game. 
Allison is preparing to participate in a sit-in with her Black peers. As early as the ‘40s but chiefly during the ‘50s and early ‘60s, sit-ins were tactics used by Civil Rights organizers in which protesters would occupy an area and refuse to move. Some of the most famous sit-ins involved Black Americans sitting at lunch counters or tables in all-white restaurants and requesting service. As Dan Fienberg points out in his season 2 review, Civil Rights organizers had largely ceased this practice by 1963.
The song playing during Diego’s time in isolation is a cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” by Daniela Andrade.
The song playing as Diego and Lila escape is “Comin’ Home Baby” by Mel Tormé. 
Luther is working for Jack Ruby – an unlikely important figure in American history. Ruby was a well-known nightclub owner in Dallas who was tied to mob activities such as illegal gambling, drugs, and prostitution. On November 24, 1963 (one day before the world “ends”), Ruby approached JFK’s killer Lee Harvey Oswald as police were escorting him from prison to court and fatally shot him at close range. 
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 2: The Frankel Footage
The title of this episode is clearly a take on “The Zapruder Film.” The Zapruder Film is footage of the JFK assassination recorded by Texas clothing manufacturer Abraham Zapruder. It is believed to be the most complete visual documentation of the JFK assassination and was used by the Warren Commission that investigated the asssassination. It’s also become fodder for conspiracy theories.
In the reality of The Umbrella Academy, The Frankel Footage is what Hazel slipped into Five’s pocket before he died. It documents JFK’s motorcade from the perspective of Dan and Ethel Frankel on Dealey Plaza. The Frankel Footage uncovers none other than Reginald Hargreeves holding an umbrella on the grassy knoll. 
Interestingly, “The Umbrella Man” is a real figure in the complicated lore of the JFK assassination. A figure holding a black umbrella appears in the Zapruder film and at one point spins his umbrella as the President’s motorcade passes by. This led to theories that, among other things, the umbrella man was a CIA plant who signaled to Lee Harvey Oswald via his umbrella to fire the fatal shots. In reality, the Umbrella Man was discovered to be Louie Steven Witt in 1978. Witt said he brought the umbrella to the motorcade to heckle Kennedy. Kennedy’s father Joe had been a fan of Nazi-appeasing British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. A black umbrella was Chamberlain’s trademark accessory. 
The Handler lives! A bullet to the head doesn’t do as much damage as one would think on The Umbrella Academy. “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” from Cinderella plays as The Handler is spared from the incinerator. 
The Handler’s boss at the Commission is a goldfish in a tank atop an otherwise human body. His name is “A.J.” and later on it’s revealed his last name is “Carmichael.” This comes directly from The Umbrella Academy comic where the head of the “Temps Aeternalis” is revealed to be a shubunkin goldfish named Carmichael. 
“Well it finally happened – that gorilla DNA took over your mind,” Five tells Luther. This quick aside confirms that Reginald utilized gorilla DNA to save Luther’s life after a mission gone wrong. 
“Who’s Diego?” Elliot (Kevin Rankin) asks Five. “Imagine Batman and then aim lower,” Five responds. 
When Klaus meets one of his old followers in a holding cell and the follower asks for words of wisdom, Klaus replies with “Don’t go chasing waterfalls. Stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to.” This is a lyric from TLC’s 1995 song “Waterfalls.” 
All the “Children of the Prophet” have “Hello” and “Goodbye” tattooed or scribbled on either palm. This is in reference to Klaus’s tattoos of the same nature. In the comics, Klaus’s callsign is “The Seance” and those tattoos mimic the setup of most Ouija boards. 
Reginald Hargreeves owns D.S. Umbrella in Dallas. We see him open this business in the enigmatic opener of The Umbrella Academy season 1’s final episode. That episode also seemed to suggest that he’s an alien. 
Baby Pogo makes his first appearance! Pogo is a chimpanzee with the intelligence of a human. He was Hargreeves’s steadfast friend and probably the only positive influence in the young Hargreeves children’s lives. He was killed by Vanya in season 1. 
Five finds an invitation to Hargreeves from the Consulate of Mexico and one Mr. Hoyt Hillenkoetter. Roscoe Henry Hillenkoetter was the first director of the CIA in real life. 
The song playing as Diego fights his father is “I’m a Man” by Spencer Davis Group.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 3: The Swedish Job
“The Swedish Job” is likely a reference to the classic ‘60s action film (and its 2003 remake) The Italian Job.
Let’s talk about The Swedes a little more. The Swedes are not present in the Umbrella Academy comic book. They fill a similar role to what Hazel and Cha-Cha do in the second volume of the comic as agents of The Commission (or Temps Aeternalis in the book). But with the show having burned Hazel and Cha-Cha on season 1, it likely needed a replacement here. Most assassins in the Commission are colorful characters so The Swede’s pale weirdness makes enough sense. 
“Sunny” by Boney M. plays over the opening montage of Klaus’s time as a cult leader.
Five is tracking soundwaves at Morty’s as that’s a surefire way to find Vanya. 
The man holding a “The End is Nigh” sign is certainly an homage to Watchmen. Watchmen was influential for Umbrella Academy writer Gerard Way…and just about everyone else. 
The Handler’s outfit as she intimidates a child at a pet shop closely resembles ‘60s fashion popularized by Jackie Onassis Kennedy – fitting given this season’s focus. 
Five’s coffee obsession continues apace in this episode. 
Klaus meets Dave, the love of his life, at Glenoak’s Hardware. Klaus had previously traveled to the 1960s in season 1 where he joined the Vietnam war effort and fell in love with fellow soldier Dave. Dave obviously has no recollection of it as it hasn’t happened for him yet. Or maybe it never will…time travel is weird. 
The song playing at episode’s end is “Golden Brown” by The Stranglers. 
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 4: The Majestic 12
“The Majestic 12” is a real organization…or purported to be real by conspiracy theorists. It’s said that The Majestic 12 was created by Harry S. Truman in 1947 and made up of scientists, military leaders, and government officials to investigate alien spacecraft. Elliot describes the Majestic 12 as a “shadow government.” Of course Reginald Hargreeves would be a part of it.
The Handler recovered young Lila in London, England in 1993. She appears to be about four years old at that time. If so, that would put her birth year at a very significant…1989.
The music budget this season continues to be insane. The song playing as Klaus falls back into alcoholism and addiction is Styx’s “Renegade.” Obviously.
Luther is enjoying some Texas barbecue when he encounters Allison again. This leads to two relevant points.
Texas barbecue is the best in the country.
With Luther’s increased appreciation for food, The Umbrella Academy season 2 is paying slight homage to the comic’s “Fat Luther” storyline. Following the events of the first comic volume, Luther becomes complacent, depressed, and ultimately, obese. “There’s certainly a nod to that in this season,” Tom Hopper told Den of Geek. “There was a question mark over the fact that Thor did the whole thing already (in Avengers: Endgame.”
Diego meets his mother at the swanky Dallas party. When Diego and his siblings knew “Grace,” she was merely a robot created by Reginald. Here she is a living, breathing woman who knows her date by “Reggie.” 
Harlan has a sparrow toy. Make note of this as sparrow imagery pops up a few times this season. Birds are all over The Handler’s clothing choices for instance. That ends up being tremendously relevant to the conclusion of season 2. 
Sissy and Vanya share a kiss and then more. Vanya is the second confirmed LGBTQ Umbrella Academy member. “Having that be such a big part of the show and Vanya’s life is exciting for me,” Ellen Page told Den of Geek. 
Luther just flat out loves drugs now. After his LSD trip in season 1, he follows that up with nitrous this season. That leads to this hilarious exchange with Elliot:
“My dad died too. He left me on the moon.” *howling, uncontrollable laughter*
The song at episode’s end is “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” by KISS. 
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 5: Valhalla
The episode’s title is named after “Valhalla,” a majestic hall ruled over by Odin in Asgard in Norse mythology. 
Poor Pogo was a space monkey. The United States, U.S.S.R., and France launched dozens of primates into space from 1948 through 1996 (!!!) to test space flight’s effects on humanity’s close cousins. When Pogo’s space flight went poorly, Reginald appears to have resurrected him with a similar serum to which he gave Luther. Is it possible that Luther got gorilla DNA and Pogo got human DNA?
Luther took a bus trip to see his father in the ‘60s. And the map that displays Luther’s trip offers up an interesting clue as to the whereabouts of The Umbrella Academy. The Umbrella Academy is filmed in Toronto though it’s never mentioned what city Toronto is standing in for in the show. In the comics it’s known as only “The City.” Here, Luther’s bus ride seems to end around Indianapolis of all places. It seems as though The Umbrella Academy is in the Midwest. 
Ambrosia was a gelatinous fruit salad popular in the ‘60s. It was and is an affront to humanity. 
The team’s breakdown of the many ways they could have destroyed the timeline is amusing to say the least:
“Diego has been stalking Lee Harvey Oswald.” – Luther
“You’ve been working for Jack Ruby!” – Diego
“Allison has been very involved in local politics.” – Klaus 
“Ok, you started a cult.” – Allison 
“I’m just a nanny on a farm. I don’t have anything to do with all of that.” – Vanya
“Face it. The only healthy relationship in this family is when Five was banging that mannequin,” Klaus says. This is a reference to Five’s mannequin lover, Dolores, from his time alone in the post-apocalypse future. 
Klaus, Allison, and Vanya dance to Sam Cooke’s “Twistin’ the Night Away.” 
The song playing as Five and Lila fight is a ska cover of Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” by The Interrupters. 
The song playing as the two surviving Swedes consign their fallen brother to Valhalla is a cover of Adele’s “Hello” by Swedish artist My Kullsvik.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 6: A Light Supper
Reginald invites his “pursuers” to 1624 Magnolia Street, Dallas. This address appears to be a parking lot currently. 
“So there was a Black president?” Raymond asks Allison of the future. There was indeed, Ray.
“Hold on I’m Coming” by Sam and Dave plays as Allison and Ray have their day out on the town. 
“Sixteen years in the grave and you finally turned into your father,” Klaus tells Ben. Given the Hargreeves’s 1989 birth year and 2019 current year of the show, Ben must have been around 14 when he died. 
Dave has already signed up for the Army ahead of schedule, suggesting that the Hargreeves’ presence in 1963 really is altering the timeline. 
The song playing as the Hargreeves approach their Tiki Lounge meeting is “The Order of Death” by Public Image Ltd.
Ben can now officially inhabit Klaus. This is an evolution of Klaus’s power of being able to communicate with the dead. Robert Sheehan said of this development: “(Klaus) can’t be as selfish anymore because (Ben) has this thing over me that he can do. We have a lot of fun with it and stuff, but it’s kind of about sobriety. I think Klaus and Ben’s relationship is entirely about sobriety versus addiction, for somebody who’s lived with addiction for so long.”
As Five will tell Luther and Diego in episode 7, Öga for  Öga is Swedish for “An eye for an eye.”
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 7: Öga for Öga
A candy bar in the vending machine in 1982 Oshkosh, Wisconsin is a “Pogos-Gogos.” Pogo was likely a famous pop culture figure due to his space flight…and ability to speak English.
When Five takes an axe to the Commission executive board in 1982 Wisconsin, it’s hard not to think of American Psycho. Aiden Gallagher is a dead ringer for a young Patrick Bateman.
The song playing as Ben experiences life in Klaus’s body is “Sister of Pearl” by Baio.
We find out the name of Klaus’s cult is “Destiny’s Children.” Klaus is really working his knowledge of ‘90s R&B groups here.
The song playing as Allison battles The Swedes is “Everybody” by Backstreet Boys.
“I heard a rumor you killed your brother,” Allison tells one of the two remaining Swedes. It’s not clear why she assumes that they are brothers. But the fact that the lead Swede follows through means that Allison was correct. Otherwise The Swede would have hopped on a plane to seek out his real brother to kill.
“It was a simple task – just be here! We didn’t have to kill a giant sea serpent, fight off an army of mutants,” Five says of his team’s failure to rendezvous at the right time to escape the ’60s. The “kill a giant sea serpent” could be a reference to a brief moment in the comic’s one-off issue “But the Past Ain’t Through With You.” Sometime in the past, The Umbrella Academy defeated a sea serpent that attacked Japan because it was insulted that a toy-maker make unlicensed plush toys of it.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 8: The Seven Stages
The FBI does have an office in Dallas but it’s about 10 miles away from Dealey Plaza and not directly behind the grassy knoll as depicted here. Or at least that’s what they want you to think…
Vanya is able to reflexively answer the FBI questioner back in Russian because Reginald Hargreeves was a strict teacher of foreign languages to The Umbrella Academy. 
Grace finds photos of Fidel Castro, Lyndon B. Johnson, JFK, and a map of his motorcade route in Reggie’s files. This is a clear indication to her that Reggie is involved in an upcoming attempt against the President’s life. Grace also sees plans for a “televator.” This is the elevator teleportation device Reginald will one day build.
There are five stages of grief but apparently seven stages of side effects from confronting one’s self in the same timeline. Five lists them out thusly:
1. Denial
2. Itching
3. Extreme Thirst and Urination
4. Excessive Gas
5. Acute Paranoia
6. Uncontrolled Perspiration
7. Homicidal Rage
As Vanya begins her LSD trip, the song that plays is “Pepper” by Butthole Surfers. Some of the lyrics are particularly apt for this season – “they were all in love with dying, they were doing it in Texas.”
Diego discovers that Vanya will be the cause of the apocalypse yet again in 1963, which makes an argument that The Umbrella Academy operates under Devs-style determinism.
Around the 23-minute mark someone holding a Cha-Cha mask can be seen off in the distance at Commission HQ. The individual’s face can’t be seen but it’s not out of the question that this could be Cha-Cha. Commission assassins appear to age in an unusual manner. Alternatively this could be an assassin who donned the cartoonish helmet before Cha-Cha. Showrunner Steve Blackman says that either interpretation is valid: “In the Commission, it’s always 1963, but it never changes time. So that very well could have been Cha-Cha holding the mask.”
In her LSD nightmare, Vanya is chastised by Reginald for wanting to live “a silly life on a silly farm.” One of the issues of “Dallas” is titled “A Perfect Life” and deals partly with Luther imagining a tranquil domestic life with Allison. 
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 9: 743
The episode gets its name from the case number in which Five executed Lila’s parents on The Handler’s orders.
Klaus references Antonio Banderas in complimenting Diego’s hair. Diego is legitimately touched. 
Much of this episode takes place in or around Dealey Plaza – the location where John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The sections of note in Dealey Plaza are the book depository where Lee Harvey Oswald fired his rifle from and the grassy knoll where some people believe a second shooter shot JFK. The Umbrella Academy doesn’t make a trip to the book depository but does briefly show the grassy knoll with Reggie Hargreeves and his umbrella. Luther and the two Fives spend most of their time in a parking lot behind the grassy knoll.
Fittingly, the song that plays as young Five fights old Five is “Dancing With Myself” by Billy Idol’s band Generation X.
Much of Vanya’s acid trip is set to Bach’s “Partita No. 2 in D Minor” on violin. There is a lot of violin imagery as well. This is fitting given Vanya’s aptitude for the instrument. She receives the villainess name “White Violin” in the comic series.
“Dad treated you like a bomb before you were one,” Ben tells Vanya.  The final issue of The Umbrella Academy Volume 1 is titled “Finale, Or, Brothers and Sisters, I Am an Atomic Bomb.”
Ben also tells Vanya he died “17 years ago” which seems at odds with Klaus’s declaration that Ben died “16 years ago.” Klaus and Ben have been in Dallas for three years though, so Ben died 19-20 years ago, depending on who is right. The year is also 1963 so Ben technically won’t die for another 42 or 43 years. Time travel is weird. 
Luther and Young Five send Old Five back to the very start of The Umbrella Academy series, which avoids a truly mind-bending number of paradoxes. 
Though it was teased in the show’s first season, Reginald Hargreeves reveals himself to be well and truly an alien in the final moments of this episode. Reggie unzips his skin mask, discards it, and then violently murders his Majestic 12 colleagues at the Tiki Lounge for them killing Kennedy against his wishes. This is a bit of information that the comic book is shockingly upfront about, casually revealing on the series’ second-ever page that Hargreeves is an alien and never addressing it further. 
Before they’re slaughtered, the Majestic 12 claim that Reggie has interests on the dark side of the Moon. Perhaps Luther’s trip to the moon wasn’t pointless after all. 
The episode concludes with a new song from Umbrella Academy creator and My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way called “Here Comes the End.”
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Episode 10: The End of Something
This is the first time we’ve seen Ben’s funeral. His little casket is covered with squid iconography – a tribute to his power. 
The Umbrella Academy are now all suspects in JFK’s death. That’s bound to change the timeline, right? Indeed it probably does based on this episode and the season’s conclusion. It’s also interesting just how inherently suspicious each member of the Umbrella Academy would be to 1963 society. Vanya has an Eastern European-sounding name and can speak Russian. Diego is Cuban. Allison is a Black revolutionary. Luther is an enormous bare-knuckle brawler. Klaus is a cult leader. All intimidating stuff. 
The army of Commission goons that The Handler summons to take care of the Umbrella team is full of colorful masks and helmets a la Hazel and Cha-Cha. 
On our set visit for The Umbrella Academy season 2, Five actor Aiden Gallagher revealed that several characters would discover “sub-powers” Gallagher said: “I was talking to Steve (Blackman) about this, and how it works is in season one, we sort of get hints about all the characters powers and in season two, we really see more so the extent how far that can go. How different elements of each character’s powers actually means that they have this sub-power.” Diego seems to come across a subpower in this final battle when he appears to be able to stop bullets. Blackman explains the power thusly:
“If you think about Diego’s power, he can, with his mind, control trajectory of objects. Basically he likes throwing, so he can throw his knife and he can make it go in weird, odd curvatures and directions. All of them stopped their training in their adolescence when the family broke up, and they are still learning about their powers and their powers are still evolving. As I go through seasons we’ll see more of that. But moving a knife through the air – an extension of that is then being able to manipulate bullets through the air.”
Speaking of powers, Lila appears to have…well, all of them. Lila displays Vanya’s power, Allison’s power, and Five’s power in fights with each of them. But as Klaus, likely correctly, theorizes later, Lila can only mirror one of their powers at a time. Her ability is mimicry. Diego surmises that this means Lila is one of them – one of the 43 children born on October 1, 1989. That’s why The Handler went out of her way to kill her parents and adopt her. 
Allison leaves a letter for Ray in a copy of Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon. A fitting book for the story of The Umbrella Academy and this season. 
The song playing during the closing montage is a cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Games” by Parra for Cuva featuring Anna Naklab.
Luther calls Jack Ruby, presumably to convince him not to kill Lee Harvey Oswald. But Jack has already picked up his gun. 
Ah, The Sparrow Academy. We delved deep into what the ending of The Umbrella Academy season 2 means over here. For now, know that The Sparrow Academy is likely lifted from Volume 3 of The Umbrella Academy comics, “Hotel Oblivion.” We say “likely” because the team doesn’t have an official name but it does invoke a lot of Sparrow imagery. The Sparrow Academy turns up at the very end of volume “Hotel Oblivion.” In the show, The Sparrow Academy seems to exist in an alternate universe created by The Umbrella Academy’s actions in Dallas. In the comic, it is implied that they are simply seven other extraordinary children born on October 1, 1989. This could prove to be the case in the show as well…save for Ben Hargreeves, who we are obviously already familiar with.

Even it seems that the life in it goes bit differently from any other cities, but from small Old town streets to Jewish district and to beautiful cemeteries everything makes me so happy there.

What excuses will I give myself to procrastinate?” Once you have such a scenario mapped out in your mind, imagine yourself in that situation, what it will feel like, and what you might be thinking?  If we are struggling to form a habit, it shouldn’t be difficult to imagine what situations will cause us to slip off our path, because these situations must have occurred for us to be struggling with forming the habit now.If you enjoyed this article, please LIKE and SHARE. 
Why is imagining the situations that will cause us to fail such a useful tool for overcoming our willpower challenges? It’s because once we have identified them, we can anticipate them and develop a plan to either avoid the situation or mitigate the temptation. When you have a definite strategy in mind, imagine yourself doing it. Envision what it will feel like to succeed. The more you mentally rehearse your plan, the more likely you are to execute it successfully when the temptation confronts you.
While planning missions in the military, two things were drilled into us. The first was to keep our plans as simple as possible by avoiding unnecessary complexity. We were taught the acronym KISS, “Keep it simple, stupid.” Simple plans are easier to execute. Complexity is the enemy of execution. The second was to rehearse, rehearse, and rehearse. The simpler your plan is, and the more you rehearse it, the better you will execute your plan. Execution is critical. Plans do not produce results unless you execute them.
Gabriele Oettingen a clinical psychologist and author of Rethinking Positive Thinking: Inside the New Science of Motivation, found that regardless of the goal, weight loss, obtaining a high-paying job after college, finding your soul mate, or recovering from hip replacement surgery, being a realistic optimist dramatically increases your odds of success. Realistic optimist recognizes the pitfalls that lay in front of them and develop a plan to address them. They don’t overestimate their ability to overcome challenges through willpower alone. They shape their environment and create if-then plans to shape their behavior. Realistic optimists have meals ready to eat in their freezer, they submit more job applications, they exercise more courage to meet potential romantic partners, and they create daily routines around rehabilitation exercises.[ii]
We must believe in ourselves, but one of the worst things we can do is underestimate the challenges we must overcome or overestimate our finite and fickle abilities to overcome them. Presuming that our willpower will always be adequate to the challenge of overcoming every temptation is folly. We need to recognize the challenges before we encounter them and develop a plan, based on proven strategies, to overcome those challenges. We should seek the advice of people that have done it.
Everyone struggles with procrastination, laziness, and overcoming distractions to make progress toward their goals. The bigger the goal, the more likely we are to be intimidated by it. The more likely we’ll be to procrastinate. When a reporter asked Earnest Hemmingway how he set about writing a novel, he replied, “First you defrost the refrigerator.” While I am no Hemmingway, the task of writing a book can seem overwhelming. To prevent the enormity of the task overwhelming me, I focus on writing the next paragraph or outlining the next chapter. A beautiful book about the joys, struggles, and rewards of writing is Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird. She describes writing as a gritty endeavor that requires courage to overcome procrastination born out of perfectionism to produce that “shitty first draft.” She says, “Perfectionism is a mean, frozen form of idealism, while messes are the artist’s true friend.”
Her book’s title reminds me to focus on taking that next small step to produce that shitty first draft. I remember the story of Anne Lamott’s brother for which the book is titled. She recounts the story in her book: “Thirty years ago my older brother, who was ten years old at the time, was trying to get a report on birds written that he’d had three months to write, which was due the next day. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him, put his arm around my brother’s shoulder, and said, “Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.” Her father’s simple advice is something we can all use as a tool to stop procrastinating and take one small step, and then another.
It is a common mistake to think that our weaknesses are unique to us. They aren’t. Many of us wrongly believe that our weakness of willpower reveals a profound flaw in our character. It doesn’t. Frailties and imperfections are common. It is part of what it means to be human. They are so common that we marvel at and celebrate those that can overcome them. Weakness is a part of the human condition. We need to understand our limitations and develop effective strategies for coping with them. We all struggle with willpower, but most of us never seek a better understanding of it. The better we understand our human frailties, the better we can manage them to overcome our willpower challenges.
The only way to beat procrastination is to overcome the mental obstacles to starting. Marla Cilley, the creator of the 5-Minute Room Rescue, found an ingenious way to help us overcome procrastination. She suggests you commit to five minutes of work. For example, tell yourself, “All I am asking for is a five-minute commitment, after that we can stop.” Of course, after starting it is much easier to keep going. This same tactic can be applied to performing a workout when you just are not feeling it. Tell yourself, “let’s get changed, grab a cup of coffee, and warm-up for five minutes, and if we still are not feeling it, we can quit.” Once you get started, it is unlikely you won’t be able to finish the workout.
We have one brain but two minds. One mind is motivated by base instincts and strong emotions, the other is logic driven and focused on our long-term goals. Emotions are powerful. Overcoming them through sheer force of will is very taxing and can deplete our willpower reserves quickly, leaving us more vulnerable to the next temptation. Shrinking the commitment, by asking for only 5-minutes of work is a very effective strategy for overcoming our feelings. The more consistently we can overcome our emotions to do what is in line with our long-term goals the more successful we will be.
Consistency is the key to making progress. John Maxwell’s Power of Five provides a great example of the power of small persistent actions. He asks what would happen if you had a large tree on your property and you committed to taking five swings at it each day? The answer is always the same; the tree will eventually fall. It doesn’t matter how large the tree is. He has written over 70 successful books using the Power of Five. We are often intimidated by the large trees in our life, but if we just committed toward doing a little each day, instead of being overwhelmed by them we would achieve incredible results.
When it comes to writing, I subscribe to Steven King’s philosophy, “Don’t wait for the muse. As I’ve said, he’s a hardheaded guy who’s not susceptible to much creative fluttering. This isn’t the Ouija board or the spirit-world we’re talking about here, but just another job like laying pipe or driving long-haul trucks. Your job is to make sure the muse knows where you’re going to be every day from nine ’til noon or seven ’til three. If he does know, I assure you that sooner or later he’ll start showing up.” I keep showing up. The worst thing we could do is judge ourselves too harshly and believe our weakness of willpower reveals a unique flaw in our character instead of what it is, ordinary human frailty.
The three most important things to understand about willpower is: (1) we need to get adequate sleep each night to begin the day with the maximum amount of willpower (2) our willpower depletes as our day progresses, and (3) the more self-control we are forced to exercise, the faster the rate of depletion. Stress and fatigue are the enemies of willpower. If you wake-up each morning tired, you’re already starting the day at a willpower disadvantage. Most people need at least 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep each day. Since our willpower is greatest at the beginning of each day, that would be the best time to schedule the tasks that require the most willpower. You’ll also find you have a lot fewer interruptions in the morning. The last strategy and perhaps the most important is to avoid taxing our willpower unnecessarily. We want to shape our environment to promote positive habits and discourage negative ones.
I have made writing a daily a habit, so it doesn’t require much willpower anymore. It is just a part of my day. Most times I can block out distractions and my ideas flow. Sometimes I cannot, but I keep showing up, determined and excited to make whatever little bit of progress I can make each day with the time that I can set aside. I write in the early morning hours because the rest of my day is filled with personal and professional commitments. I know that if I keep plugging away, I will eventually complete this book and the other books I have already outlined. The key to finishing is to develop the habit of starting again each day. I don’t rely on willpower to write each day; I rely on my morning schedule. I don’t struggle with the decision. I look at the clock, and when it says 4:30 AM, my mind says it is time to write. Routines reap results because they don’t rely on willpower, that fickle friend that is never there for you when you need him. Disciplined habits are our best friends. “A small daily task, if it be really daily, will beat the labors of a spasmodic Hercules.” Anthony Trollope
The more we rely on willpower as our strategy for success, the less likely we are to achieve our goals. The problem with willpower is that it depletes as the day progresses and leaves us naked to temptation. It is more useful to shape our environment to reduce temptations and distractions than to rely on willpower and grit. When we overestimate our willpower, we unnecessarily expose ourselves to people, situations, and environments that will tempt us to break our resolutions. “Research shows that people who think they have the most willpower are actually the most likely to lose control when tempted. For example, smokers who are the most optimistic about their ability to resist temptation are the most likely to relapse four months later, and overoptimistic dieters are the least likely to lose weight. Why? They fail to predict when, where, and why they will give in. They expose themselves to more temptation,” Kelly McGonigal.
Ronald Amundsen
The 1909 race to the South Pole illustrates the necessity to identify the challenges ahead of you, learn from the success of those who have gone before you, and not to rely too heavily on grit and determination to push through whatever obstacles you encounter. Two teams took-up the challenge of being the first to reach the South Pole. One group was led by British Naval Officer Robert Scott and the other lead by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen.
Amundsen gave his people the best possible equipment, and paced their journey to ensured he gave his men plenty of time to rest along the route. Scott’s team was ill-equipped. Inadequate clothes lead to frostbite, and poor goggles lead to snow blindness. Amundsen used dogs to haul their provisions, while Scott used untried motorized sleds which quickly failed, forcing his men to carry their provisions on sleds.

Scott pushed on and ultimately made it to the South Pole, albeit one month behind Amundsen’s team. Tragically, no one on Scott’s team would survive the journey back, while Amundsen’s team returned with no severe maladies. There are many reasons for the radically different outcomes, but ultimately it was Scott’s overconfidence in the grit and resilience of his team that caused him to underestimate the difficulty of their journey. His dying words illustrate this point. “Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman. These rough notes and our dead bodies must tell the tale.”[iii]
I don’t want to diminish their courageous act of perseverance, but merely wish to point out that it could have been avoided. Scott could have given his team a better chance of success if he had better identify the challenges and better understood the limits of human endurance. This program offers tools to make your journey more manageable, but certainly not effortless. You will have to demonstrate some grit and willpower, but much less than if you didn’t use the proper strategies. The mistake I want us to avoid making is relying too heavily on willpower.
A plan that relies too heavily on willpower is doomed to failure. We are foolish to subject ourselves to temptation needlessly. Willpower is a fickle thing that often leaves us during our time of greatest need. As Shakespeare put it, “we are devils to ourselves, when we will tempt the frailty of our powers.”[iv] We shouldn’t tempt fate by relying on willpower when an effective strategy could reduce or eliminate the need for willpower. The proven strategies contained in this program will give you the greatest odds of success. Why make your journey any more difficult than it needs to be? The best use of our willpower is the implementation of strategies to reduce our need to exercise it.
The distance between our goals and where we are is the journey before us. When we choose to spend time with people that exhibit negative attitudes and behaviors, we are deciding to put rocks in our backpack. If we are trying to eat healthier but choose to stock our pantry with junk food, we are choosing to make our journey harder. We are consciously choosing to put pebbles in our shoes. Many people say they don’t want to deprive their kids, of what exactly I don’t know, a lifetime of sugar addiction? I believe desserts should be an occasional treat, not a daily indulgence.
These rocks and pebbles won’t produce an immediate failure, but they will make failure inevitable. The extra weight will slow your progress, and the pebbles will grind away at your resolve with each step you take; until you eventually give up. When your willpower finally gives out, you’ll blame it for your lack of success, instead of your decision to expose yourself to the temptations unnecessarily. You are going to need grit and willpower, just like Amundsen’s team surely did to successfully navigate the South Pole, but they combined it with the right tools and strategies.
Save your limited willpower for the temptations you cannot avoid, instead of putting more in your path. You are going to be tempted at the office to eat the donuts, cookies, and birthday cakes on a regular basis. Our supply of willpower can vary significantly from day to day depending on how stressful our day has been. This is especially true as the day wears on, and our ability to exert willpower is depleted to almost nothing. If we get adequate sleep each night, we begin the day with a willpower reservoir that is fully restored like your cellphone battery. The more we use it throughout the day, the quicker it depletes. Ever notice that most of our bad habits occur late at night?
That is because our willpower has evaporated and all we are left with is our desire to seek instant gratification and relief from our stressful day. Shaping your environment by eliminating the temptations you will encounter in the evening is the most effective strategy you can adopt. The next most effective technique is establishing an evening ritual that supports your goals. Habits conserve our willpower because they don’t require our conscious mind to decide what to do. The decision is made automatic through repetition. Our primitive mind encounters the cue and executes the routine automatically.
Change agents often find that what appears to be a people problem is a situation problem. Instead of taking on the difficult task of changing our behavior through willpower, we can often tweak our environment and make change happen painlessly. Instead of relying on workers following proper procedures, safety engineers install guards and controls to prevent workers from taking shortcuts that put themselves at risk. They do this because they know that it is easier to tweak the environment; rather than to force 100% compliance with proper procedure as workers become overconfident and complacent.
I hope you’ll decide to become an optimistic realist. I hope I have convinced you that we cannot ignore the challenges in front of us or imagine a future in which they won’t exist. We must develop a plan that relies less on willpower and more on structuring our environment to make good habits easier and bad habits more difficult. Our environment profoundly influences our behavior, so it is only logical that we would want to shape it to promote good habits and discourage bad ones.
A realistic optimist anticipates the challenges that are outside their control so they can develop and rehearse a simple plan to address them. If you are struggling to exercise five days a week consistently, I want you to first ask yourself “why am I NOT going to train five days this week?” Then I want you to develop a plan that will allow you to overcome the excuses. Optimism is an excellent source of motivation, but naïve optimism is a recipe for failure that ends in bitter disappointment. I want you to believe in yourself, but I want that believe to be based on the world as it is, and not based on the world as you would wish it to be. I want you to be a realistic optimist.

lantern - how did you meet your best friend? What were your first impressions of each other?
Technically we met in 8th grade but we didn’t start talking to each other until 9th. We officially ‘met’ in our 9th grade Spanish class. We sat next to each other and then were still next to each other when seats were assigned since our last names both come at the end of the alphabet. I thought she was cool and she seemed friendly, she probably thought I was really quiet 😂
frost - if you could give some advice to your younger self, what would you say?
Don’t distance yourself from your friends, don’t blindly trust everyone, take better care of yourself, don’t lie to your therapist to get out of therapy quicker. Being lgbt is not a bad thing, you’re allowed to explore your identity instead of forcing yourself to try and be like other people.
maple - is there a hobby / skill that you’ve always wanted to try but never did?
Learning the piano, but I can’t afford nor do I have the space for a piano 😂

Yes! I was at this girl’s house once when I was still a kid, and we were sitting in her living room and we both saw a painting move back forth on its own. It was leaning against a table and no one else was in the room but it was like soneine had turned invisible and moved it.
Another time I was at a friends house, we were watching a movie with her family in the living room, so her room was empty. It was us, her sisters, her brother, and her mom and mom’s boyfriend. Suddenly the radio in my friends room turned on by itself despite being turned off before and unplugged.
I also one used a Ouija board with her and we actually got in contact with someone but I don’t remember much about that

Unholy Alternate Chapter 10: Martha
(Since the actual chapter 10 got a pretty good response, I decided to post the other one here so the time I spent on it wasn’t entirely wasted. Ghost text was originally underlined as well as italicized for clarity, but formatting should indicate whenever the ghost is speaking.)
WARNINGS: Mentions of suicide in this chapter.
Martha Dunnstock always did her best, because that was all anyone could do. It didn’t matter if it was in class or in PE (even though everyone always laughed at her), but she always went the extra mile when it came to her friends.
So, obviously, Heather Chandler’s sudden death, and what it did to Veronica, was weighing heavily on her heart.
Veronica was… gone. There was no better way to put it. Sure, her body was still moving through the motions, going to class, eating lunch, but her eyes were just… blank. Lifeless.
Martha and Mac (and yes, she had gotten Heather McNamara’s permission to call her that) were doing their darndest to get some sort of positive reaction out of her, but nothing they tried was working. Of course, there was nothing negative either.
Always look on the bright side of life.
It was also good that everyone else was avoiding them like the plague. With one Heather’s death and another’s disappearance, the social pyramid had crumbled into disarray. It was the reason no-one called Mac out for hanging around her, the bottom of the food chain. It was the reason no-one really spoke to either of them, at all.
Maybe it was just the fact there was a serial killer on the loose. That might also be a factor.
Mac was right. The police here were useless. Not only did they fail to apprehend Jason Dean, the had failed to find Heather Duke, too. That made Martha nervous. Why did she run? She did the right thing, and told the truth. She could have asked for protection from the one guy who was out to get her, but instead she fled into the great unknown. Why?
There was also someone else missing, and to be honest, she didn’t notice until Mac pointed it out.
“Have you heard?” the other students said in whispers, “Courtney’s in hospital.”
“Got mugged on her way home from school.”
“She lives on the nice side of town, is nowhere safe?”
“What’s she in for? Stab wounds? Concussion?”
“Blood loss, I heard.”
And in that moment, Martha got exactly what she thought she wanted. Veronica reacted.
She was laughing.
  Heather Chandler’s funeral was a miserable experience. Of course it was, Martha said to herself, it’s a funeral. These things weren’t supposed to be happy.
She figured that Heather Number One would be pleased with the turnout, though. People were nearly out the church doors. Heck, there were even a few photographers, and a local news crew were setting up outside as everyone filed in. All this publicity around a girl obsessed with popularity, and Heather wasn’t able to see it.
Truly tragic.
Martha and Mac remained long after anyone else filed out of the cemetery, even Mr. and Mrs. Chandler (who Mac was kind enough to identify, a twinge of bitterness in her voice). Mr. Chandler stayed for a carefully calculated amount of time, before insisting he had a plane to catch. The dead girl’s mother lingered a little while longer, before trudging off, alone.
The reason she stayed for so long was because Veronica refused to move.
That brief flicker of mad emotion had disappeared as quickly as it had come, and Veronica was back to being near-catatonic. Her oldest remaining friend stared at the mountain of flowers impassively.
Then…
“She’s not in there.”
Veronica’s voice was rough, perhaps from lack of use, and Martha hated the sound of it. She shared a look with the Last Heather Standing.
“Where else would she be?” Mac questioned.
“Don’t know. Not here.”
“She’s dead, Veronica,” Martha half-pleaded with Veronica to see some sense, “I’m sorry, we all saw it.”
Veronica made a noise, and Martha had never heard something so broken come out a human mouth.
“She’s been dead for the past few months. This is nothing.”
Martha tensed up.
  An emergency meeting was called. According to Mac, this sort of thing happened a lot with the Heathers. Martha honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Heather Chandler had forced someone to write down the minutes.
“We need to do something,” Martha said firmly, “We can’t let Veronica wither away like this.”
“It’s such a weird thing to say, though,” Mac replied, “‘she’s been dead for the past few months’? Like, what does she mean?”
“She’s in denial. She doesn’t want to believe Heather’s gone.”
“Nobody does.”
“But she might do something really stupid! We need to take steps to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
“What if she’s right, though?”
Martha’s brow knitted in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“Well, you’d think Heather would show up as a ghost. You’d have seen her by now, if she was dead.”
“I think coming back to haunt the living is the exception, rather than the rule,” Martha replied. Mac scoffed.
“Well, yeah. But do you really think someone like Heather is just gonna stay down after that?”
“She got shot in the head, Heather.”
They both turned to the third member of their meeting.
“What do you think?”
I think you’re both right, the voice replied.
  Mac and Martha eventually both agreed that Veronica’s safety was the most important thing to them in the few days following the funeral. She was the one friend they had, and they both refused to let that slip through their fingers as well.
To be fair, they could have been more subtle about it. They removed razor blades, cords, ropes, pills, anything that Veronica might use to hurt herself. It was hard tracking everything down and hiding it, but the peace of mind, and the grateful smiles of the Sawyer family, made it worth it.
“Martha, I’m not suicidal,” Veronica had told her at lunch one day. She was getting better about talking, even if it was in short, broken sentences. Martha nodded, but didn’t say anything.
Veronica didn’t look suicidal. Tired, grumpy, yes, but not suicidal. Then again, Martha thought, no-one really ever looked suicidal. That’s why it always came as a shock.
Better to be safe than sorry. Martha would continue.
 “I think they were dating.”
Mac was chewing thoughtfully on her fingernail as she spoke. Martha nearly choked on her popcorn.
“Who?”
“You know, Heather and Veronica.”
Martha didn’t know. She didn’t mind it, obviously, but the fact she had completely missed that made her feel like a bad friend. Maybe she should go over and tell Veronica she loves her no matter what…?
Actually, that might not have been such a good idea. Veronica was still mad at her for not listening about the whole ‘not-suicidal’ thing. Self-defeated, Martha’s eyes returned to Mac’s TV.
She’d rented Beetlejuice again, since she hadn’t managed to finish it on her last movie night. Since Mac was kind enough to host, she figured she’d just start over from the beginning for her benefit.
“How did you figure that out?” Martha asked.
“Well, I got help. James- no, Jason Dean told me. I think he was expecting me to tell other people.”
“And you believed him?”
Mac shrugged. “I didn’t have any reason not to, at the time. I mean, I didn’t catch them doing anything, but they were having, like, a lot of study sessions.”
Martha frowned, mulling over the new information. Striving for academic excellence wasn’t exactly an indicator of a romantic relationship. Then again, she barely knew anything about how Heather Chandler’s brain had worked. While she contemplated, Mac’s attention returned to the movie.
“I wonder if that’s actually how ghosts work.” She murmured.
I didn’t get a manual, if that’s what you’re wondering.
“Really? Hm.”
  Martha drummed her fingers on her bedside table. Her companion watched, waiting for a question.
“So,” Martha began, “When you said ‘you’re both right’, did you mean…?”
I meant that you were both right. Just in different ways. came the response. Martha rubbed her temples.
“Is Heather Chandler dead or alive?”
Physically, she is dead.
Oh-kay. Now they were making progress.
“Is she a zombie? Like Kurt?”
No. She’s not like Kurt and Ram. Martha flinched at the name. She was perfectly comfortable with being in the denial stage, and wasn’t willing to move any further down those five steps until everything else in her life was sorted.
Do you want to talk to her?
Martha hesitated.
On the one hand, she did not want to talk to Heather Chandler, and she was sure Heather didn’t want to talk to her. She hadn’t, except in sneers and insults and, that one time, a terse concession, likely at Veronica’s insistence. Martha didn’t know exactly what condition Chandler was in, but she seriously doubted it would improve her already sour mood.
On the other hand…
The school was falling apart without her. More importantly, Veronica was falling apart without her, and Martha was bailing water out of a rapidly sinking ship. There were so many questions to ask – how did you survive? Can you see ghosts? Were you dating Veronica? Did you treat her right?
What did you do to her? How do I fix it?
Martha grabbed her Ouija board, but the clearing of a throat that didn’t need clearing stopped her.
You won’t need that.
  She knew about the house at the edge of town – decrepit, supposedly abandoned in the 70s – and Martha had hoped she never would have to go there. In elementary and middle school, the whispers of ghosts roaming the halls had made Martha shiver, but she knew now that those rumors weren’t true. The only things haunting this skeleton of a home were drug addicts and ne’er-do-wells.
And, apparently, one actual dead person.
The pale figure on the filthy old armchair stood up as a creak of wood alerted her to Martha’s presence. She sauntered over, like a cat, but Martha hurried to meet her. She wouldn’t be cowed into submission, not when she was preparing to interrogate this phantom.
The voice that emanated was hoarse, grating. Like gravel. Stone on stone.
“You can’t sneak for shit.”
It was such a strange experience looking at her. She had… faded, like an old photo left in the light for too long. The colors were washed out. White and grey, rather than gold and pink. No red, of course. A faded leather jacket over a hoodie (just like the one Veronica purchased) and washed-out jeans. Martha never realized associating someone with a color could have such a profound effect on recognizing them.
That scowl, though, that was the clue that this was definitely Heather Chandler.
“What is it, Dunnstock?”
Not Dumptruck. Martha internally squealed as she clicked her pen.
“I have some questions.”
Heather groaned, but her eyes were stopped mid-roll by another steely glance from beside Martha. Chandler straightened under the unearthly gaze, and coughed. Martha took it as an affirmative. She readied her notebook.
“What are you?”
“Vampire.” The answer was spat out, almost unwillingly, and Heather seemed to shrink underneath the weight of the word. “Have to drink blood, don’t have a heartbeat. Vampire.”
Martha frowned slightly. “You don’t have fangs.”
The response was immediate, and part of the reason Martha didn’t react is because it took a few seconds to register. It was a sudden thing, a shift in the structure of Heather’s face, and Martha found herself face-to-face with totally black eyes (a dim red just visible in the center) and a mouth full of impossibly sharp teeth.  
“This good enough for you, Nancy Drew?” Heather snarled, voice even rougher and more feral than before.
Martha’s face was blank. “Yep.”
There was a shocked silence. Heather returned to… well, mostly normal, and backed away.
“Wow. You really don’t give a fuck, do you?”
Martha shrugged, and scribbled away in her notebook.
Angry Vampire. Do not bring up fangs. Stereotyping may also be a problem.
“Okay. Next question. Did you and Veronica… uh… you know. Date?”
Heather’s eyes widened, caught.
“I don’t know what you mean,” she replied robotically.
“I’m sorry if it’s too personal. I just want a yes or a no.”
Heather flopped back down into the chair, fidgeting. Had she ever done something so vulnerable at school? Had she ever seemed unsure? Martha attempted to remember, before deciding that any occasion where it had happened might as well have never occurred at all.
“Yeah,” Heather mumbled after what seemed like an eternity. Then, it was like Martha had opened the feelings floodgates, “she helped me through this whole unlife thing, when it first happened, and she just kept helping me. I made the first move after she did something stupid, and she didn’t reject me, so I assumed it was okay. I still… fuck. I still care about her. A lot.”
Martha drew a little love heart on the page.
“She doesn’t know you’re here, though. You haven’t told her.” Martha said, gently. Heather ran a pale hand through white hair. “You don’t have to keep going if you don’t want to. I can ask another question.”
“Don’t tell me what to do.” Heather snapped, but there was none of the usual venom in it. “She wants to do normal teen stuff. I tried, when I was alive, but she didn’t get the hint that I liked her until after I died. Then I died again, and I figured if I got out now, there was still a chance she could get what she wants with someone else.”
“She’s a wreck right now.”
Heather sniffled. “I know.”
Martha crammed in the word ‘sad’ next to her ‘angry vampire’ note. “I think that the S.S. Normalcy has left Port Veronica. Go see her. Explain yourself.”
“But she freaked out last time.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing!” Heather cried defensively. “I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t. I just wanted to see her, and she didn’t even know I was real!”
Then prove that you are. Simple.
“Shove it, Casper!”
“She’s right,” Martha butted in, “Hug her. Maybe kiss her. Make her feel loved while you can. I want my best friend to feel better, and you might be the only one who can do that.”
Heather ran her hand through her hair again, her attention elsewhere. It was still so strange to consider Chandler as anything more than an idea. A movie villain, rather than someone grappling with feelings just like those of the students she used to rule over.
“I can’t believe I’m taking relationship advice from you two dweebs,” she grumbled. Now-grey eyes flicked upwards. “I’ll talk to her – tomorrow night. What’s your next question, Girl Friday?”
Martha clicked her pen. “You can tell Veronica yourself.”
Chandler scoffed. “That’s it? I can come up with ten different things to ask a dead girl before breakfast.”
“I’ve already gotten what I wanted.” Martha smiled, and Heather just watched in confusion as Martha practically skipped out.
  Everything was great.
Martha had often thought she had peaked in Kindergarten, when everyone was friends with everyone, but she had proved the world wrong, in secret. Sure, life wasn’t as shiny and happy as it was back then, but it was a huge improvement from a few months ago. Martha’s hard work had paid off – she had not one, but three friends, maybe five (she hadn’t won over Chandler just yet, and once Heather Duke stopped hiding, she was sure they could go back to the old days) or six (once Ram was… found. Yes. He would be found, safe and alive).
School was almost back to normal. There was a pep rally on that night, and Martha was ready to go support Mac. Just a quick check on Veronica – it was unlikely she wanted to go, but it was still possible. She might even benefit from it. Maybe.
Actually, now that she thought about it, probably not.
Mrs. Sawyer smiled as Martha walked up the stairs, and she was, too, until she heard a voice in her ear.
Something’s wrong.
Mrs. Sawyer was right behind her. She couldn’t just stop and ask. Instead, she gave a meaningful glance to her left, and the ghost disappeared.
“Veronica?” Mrs. Sawyer called, knocking on the bedroom door. “Veronica, your friend Martha is here to see you…”
No response from inside. Veronica’s mother shrugged, and went back down the stairs. The usual response from Veronica these days, Martha imagined.
She turned the doorknob.
In amidst splintered wood from the closet door, Veronica was swaying gently from a noose.
Martha’s scream was cut off when Veronica’s head shot up, and she gave her trademark strangled cry.
“Oh my god! Martha, I’m so sorry! Don’t freak out!”
“It’s too late for that!” Martha shrilled. Veronica fiddled with something around her waist, and fell to the floor with a thud.
“Ow.”
Martha stomped over, trying to get the right mix of anger and disappointment on her face. “Why?! What possessed you to fake this sort of thing? Was it a joke?”
“No! No, of course not!” Veronica’s eyes flickered for a moment, and she was overtaken with something darker. “JD was here.”
Martha froze.
Veronica continued, her tone now urgent. “Listen. He’s going to do something awful. Worse than killing Heather and Ram and Kurt. I need your help.”
Yes. This was the moment Martha had been waiting for. Her chest puffed up in excitement…
And then deflated immediately.
“I’ll try,” Martha said, almost apologetic, “but I don’t think anyone will listen to me.”
“Then I’ll make them listen.”
Veronica picked up her croquet mallet. There was a fire in her eyes that wasn’t there before, and she was pacing, thoughtful.
She was back.
“Everyone already thinks I’m crazy. Not without good reason, obviously, but if I tell them there’s a bomb, I’ll probably get sent off to an asylum.”
“There’s a bomb?!”
Veronica shrugged. “That’s what he said. So, maybe I can get people out of the gym, find the bomb and… defuse it. Somehow.”
Martha shook her head. “If you find it, take it out into the football field. You might set it off accidentally.”
“And no-one has to play football. It’s a win-win.” Veronica’s smile faded. “Shit. Duke.”
Martha perked up.
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know. JD said something about a suicide note. He might be planning to fake a suicide again.”
Martha mentally filed away the ‘again’ for questioning at a later date. There was a cough from behind her, in lieu of a tap on the shoulder.
Chandler’s finally stopped brooding. She’ll find Heather Duke while you find JD.
“She’s fine.” Martha relayed. “Well, she will be. I’m sure of it.”
Veronica frowned, and Martha’s sure she heard the taller girl curse under her breath.
“One question. Just one, Martha. Do you believe in ghosts?”
Martha turned around to face the apparition, silently asking permission.
Betty Finn nodded.
“Yes,” Martha replied. Veronica smirked.
“I thought so.”
