portal au?? i need 2 know
ok so i made this post a few months ago explaining it when i was hyperfixated on portal
so membrane labs takes the place of aperture in this au because tbh cave johnson and prof. membrane are both fucking insane mad scientists.
dib is used as a test subject as punishment for being fucking insane and gaz volunteered to be a test subject for fun
instead of glados we have TAK which stands for Technologically Automated Komputer. because she kept trying to kill all of the scientists and membrane labs, various personality cores were developed to give her certain desirable traits. one of these cores is zim, the intelligence dampening sphere.
gir is a turret who decides to follow dib and gaz around
zim and gir aren’t really relevant until we get to the portal 2 bit
the main story starts off after dib has been trapped in the testing chamber for a year. TAK “accidentally” starts hinting at the fact that gaz is simultaneously testing literally on the other side of the wall. TAK tries to make dibs life a living hell while she goes relatively easy on gaz. this is because she is a misandrist (joke). gaz genuinely thought dib would have died by then, so when TAK says something about “wow, you did so much better than your brother on this one” she kinda flips her shit. anyway the normal plot of the first portal game happens except for the boss fight at the end where it’s 2 people fighting TAK instead of one. they escape, but are dragged back in and put into stasis.
the portal 2 bit starts after 99999999…….. when zim wakes up each sibling (separately) and tells them that everyone in the planet, including their sibling, is dead. zim guides them both back to their individual testing tracks and starts helping them “escape”. after waking TAK up, it is once again revealed that both siblings are alive and this time tak doesn’t even try to hide the siblings existence from eachother, but she is trying to keep them physically separated. gaz and dib are reunited once again during the scene where zim replaces tak.
gaz, dib, and tak (now in the body of a potato) are thrown into old testing tracks. and it is *very* unsettling to hear their dead fathers voice the whole time.
when they get to the test chambers set up by zim, they’re separated once again until they escape the chambers
honestly i’m running out of energy and i keep getting interrupted by our mother but basically in the end dib and gaz stay in the facility with the (mostly) tamed robots because the word is basically over

Undergrad research blast from the past. Here I am in 2020 assembling a micro fluidic flow cell with a gold electrode block. I think I took this video for myself so I knew what to clip to what. This was when I worked with electrochemical sensors, transducing signals via impedance spectroscopy.
A lot of electrochemical techniques rely on measuring voltages or currents, but in this lab we looked at impedance- which is a fancy combination of regular resistance (like the same one from ohms law) and the imaginary portion of the resistance that arises from the alternating current we supply.
I would functionalize different groups on the gold working electrode by exposing the surface to a solution of thiolated biomarker capture groups. Thiols love to form self-assembled mono layers over gold, so anything tagged with thiol ends up sticking. [Aside: Apparently after I left the group they moved away from gold thiol interactions because they weren't strong enough to modify the electrode surface in a stable and predictable way, especially if we were flowing the solution over the surface (which we wanted to do for various automation reasons)]. The capture groups we used were various modified cyclodextrins- little sugar cups with hydrophobic pockets inside and a hydrophilic exterior. Cyclodextrins are the basis of febreeze- a cyclodextrin spray that captures odor molecules in that hydrophobic pocket so they can't interact with receptors in your nose. We focused on capturing hydrophobic things in our little pocket because many different hydrophobic biomarkers are relevant to many different diseases, but a lot of sensors struggle to interact with them in the aqueous environment of bodily fluids.
My work was two fold:
1) setting up an automated system for greater reproducibility and less human labor. I had to figure out how to get my computer, the potentiostat (which controls the alternating current put in, and reads the working electrode response), the microfluidic pump, and the actuator that switched between samples to all talk to each other so I could set up my solutions, automatically flow the thiol solution for an appropriate time and flow rate to modify the surface, then automatically flow a bio fluid sample (or rather in the beginning, pure samples of specific isolated biomarkers, tho their tendency to aggregate in aqueous solution may have changed the way they would interact with the sensor from how they would in a native environment, stabilized in blood or urine) over the electrode and cue the potentiostat for multiple measurements, and then flow cleaning solutions to clean out the tubings and renew the electrode. This involved transistor level logic (pain) and working with the potentiostat company to interact with their proprietary software language (pain) and so much dicking around with the physical components.
2) coming up with new cyclodextrin variants to test, and optimizing the parameters for surface functionalization. What concentrations and times and flow rates to use? How do different groups around the edge of the cyclodextrin affect the ability to capture distinct classes of neurotransmitters? I wasn't working with specific sensors, I was trying to get cross reactivity for the purpose of constructing nonspecific sensor arrays (less akin to antibody/antigen binding of ELISAs and more like the nonspecific combinatorial assaying you do with receptors in your tongue or nose to identify "taste profiles" or "smell profiles"), so I wanted diverse responses to diverse assortments of molecules.
Idk where I'm going with this. Mostly reminiscing. I don't miss the math or programming or the physical experience of being at the bench (I find chemistry more "fun") but I liked the ultimate goal more. I think cross reactive sensor arrays and principle component analysis could really change how we do biosample testing, and could potentially be useful for defining biochemical subtypes of subjectively defined mental illnesses.... I think that could (maybe, possibly, if things all work and are sufficiently capturing relevant variance in biochemistry from blood or piss or sweat or what have you) be a more useful way to diagnose mental illness and correlate to possible responses to medications than phenotypic analysis/interviews/questionnaires/trial and error pill prescribing.

I’ll just leave this on the wall, but whenever my relatives bring up how the degree in art that I just finished has become obsolete with the access to ai generated art becoming popular, I’ve begun to ponder how just as vulnerable their jobs are to automation.
One day cars will become functionally identical to iPhones. Forget mechanics that potentially will fudge the prices on your timing belt, now we will have robots that will simply replace it for a fraction of the cost! However that also means that there is no durability to the car and is therefore dysfunctional when in conditions ever so slightly strenuous beyond what was tested for in a lab.

At the top of many automation wish lists is a particularly time-consuming task: chores. 
The moonshot of many roboticists is cooking up the proper hardware and software combination so that a machine can learn “generalist” policies (the rules and strategies that guide robot behavior) that work everywhere, under all conditions. Realistically, though, if you have a home robot, you probably don’t care much about it working for your neighbors. MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) researchers decided, with that in mind, to attempt to find a solution to easily train robust robot policies for very specific environments.
“We aim for robots to perform exceptionally well under disturbances, distractions, varying lighting conditions, and changes in object poses, all within a single environment,” says Marcel Torne Villasevil, MIT CSAIL research assistant in the Improbable AI lab and lead author on a recent paper about the work. “We propose a method to create digital twins on the fly using the latest advances in computer vision. With just their phones, anyone can capture a digital replica of the real world, and the robots can train in a simulated environment much faster than the real world, thanks to GPU parallelization. Our approach eliminates the need for extensive reward engineering by leveraging a few real-world demonstrations to jump-start the training process.”

Taking your robot home
RialTo, of course, is a little more complicated than just a simple wave of a phone and (boom!) home bot at your service. It begins by using your device to scan the target environment using tools like NeRFStudio, ARCode, or Polycam. Once the scene is reconstructed, users can upload it to RialTo’s interface to make detailed adjustments, add necessary joints to the robots, and more.
The refined scene is exported and brought into the simulator. Here, the aim is to develop a policy based on real-world actions and observations, such as one for grabbing a cup on a counter. These real-world demonstrations are replicated in the simulation, providing some valuable data for reinforcement learning. “This helps in creating a strong policy that works well in both the simulation and the real world. An enhanced algorithm using reinforcement learning helps guide this process, to ensure the policy is effective when applied outside of the simulator,” says Torne.
Testing showed that RialTo created strong policies for a variety of tasks, whether in controlled lab settings or more unpredictable real-world environments, improving 67 percent over imitation learning with the same number of demonstrations. The tasks involved opening a toaster, placing a book on a shelf, putting a plate on a rack, placing a mug on a shelf, opening a drawer, and opening a cabinet. For each task, the researchers tested the system’s performance under three increasing levels of difficulty: randomizing object poses, adding visual distractors, and applying physical disturbances during task executions. When paired with real-world data, the system outperformed traditional imitation-learning methods, especially in situations with lots of visual distractions or physical disruptions.
“These experiments show that if we care about being very robust to one particular environment, the best idea is to leverage digital twins instead of trying to obtain robustness with large-scale data collection in diverse environments,” says Pulkit Agrawal, director of Improbable AI Lab, MIT electrical engineering and computer science (EECS) associate professor, MIT CSAIL principal investigator, and senior author on the work.
As far as limitations, RialTo currently takes three days to be fully trained. To speed this up, the team mentions improving the underlying algorithms and using foundation models. Training in simulation also has its limitations, and currently it’s difficult to do effortless sim-to-real transfer and simulate deformable objects or liquids.
The next level
So what’s next for RialTo’s journey? Building on previous efforts, the scientists are working on preserving robustness against various disturbances while improving the model’s adaptability to new environments. “Our next endeavor is this approach to using pre-trained models, accelerating the learning process, minimizing human input, and achieving broader generalization capabilities,” says Torne.
“We’re incredibly enthusiastic about our ‘on-the-fly’ robot programming concept, where robots can autonomously scan their environment and learn how to solve specific tasks in simulation. While our current method has limitations — such as requiring a few initial demonstrations by a human and significant compute time for training these policies (up to three days) — we see it as a significant step towards achieving ‘on-the-fly’ robot learning and deployment,” says Torne. “This approach moves us closer to a future where robots won’t need a preexisting policy that covers every scenario. Instead, they can rapidly learn new tasks without extensive real-world interaction. In my view, this advancement could expedite the practical application of robotics far sooner than relying solely on a universal, all-encompassing policy.”
“To deploy robots in the real world, researchers have traditionally relied on methods such as imitation learning from expert data, which can be expensive, or reinforcement learning, which can be unsafe,” says Zoey Chen, a computer science PhD student at the University of Washington who wasn’t involved in the paper. “RialTo directly addresses both the safety constraints of real-world RL [robot learning], and efficient data constraints for data-driven learning methods, with its novel real-to-sim-to-real pipeline. This novel pipeline not only ensures safe and robust training in simulation before real-world deployment, but also significantly improves the efficiency of data collection. RialTo has the potential to significantly scale up robot learning and allows robots to adapt to complex real-world scenarios much more effectively.”
“Simulation has shown impressive capabilities on real robots by providing inexpensive, possibly infinite data for policy learning,” adds Marius Memmel, a computer science PhD student at the University of Washington who wasn’t involved in the work. “However, these methods are limited to a few specific scenarios, and constructing the corresponding simulations is expensive and laborious. RialTo provides an easy-to-use tool to reconstruct real-world environments in minutes instead of hours. Furthermore, it makes extensive use of collected demonstrations during policy learning, minimizing the burden on the operator and reducing the sim2real gap. RialTo demonstrates robustness to object poses and disturbances, showing incredible real-world performance without requiring extensive simulator construction and data collection.”
Torne wrote this paper alongside senior authors Abhishek Gupta, assistant professor at the University of Washington, and Agrawal. Four other CSAIL members are also credited: EECS PhD student Anthony Simeonov SM ’22, research assistant Zechu Li, undergraduate student April Chan, and Tao Chen PhD ’24. Improbable AI Lab and WEIRD Lab members also contributed valuable feedback and support in developing this project. 
This work was supported, in part, by the Sony Research Award, the U.S. government, and Hyundai Motor Co., with assistance from the WEIRD (Washington Embodied Intelligence and Robotics Development) Lab. The researchers presented their work at the Robotics Science and Systems (RSS) conference earlier this month.
