Serious talk now. A very prestigious publication offers a cover feature to the First Lady of a country that’s been war-torn for almost half a year, in a time when the international public opinion is drifting away from the atrocities that the invading forces are perpetrating. Was she supposed to turn it down? And why? Just because it’s not Time, it’s not Frobes, it’s a “fashion mag”? I think the collective uproar over the Vogue cover story stems from the die-hard prejudice that fashion and everything in its orbit are inherently reductive and frivolous, because it’s – you guess it! – considered “feminine”. This mindset is deeply rooted in misogyny, and if you’re buing into it, you might want to stop for a moment and confront how you’ve internalised it. Or, if you’re just deliberately looking for any excuse to suck up to the Kremlin’s smear campaign against Ukraine, at least be aware that y’all sound like sexist pricks.

International outreach is part of the war effort. Olena Zelenska has carried it through a very prestigious magazine, which happens to be primarily fashion-oriented, and which told her story through the visual language of a fashion editorial. This is in no more reductive or less important than any other interview or cover story the Zelenskyys have been featured in while trying to do what they can for their country.

A poem about the ravages of war, originally written in Ukrainian by Serhiy Zhadan, translated into English by a Ukrainian-American who is himself a poet, Ilya Kaminsky, and THEN translated from English into Hindi by the brilliant Arun Jee. Thus the message can reach many millions around the world who would otherwise have been unable to understand it.

TRANSLATION IS VITAL.
