Dominik Scherrer

Dominik Scherrer is an Ivor Novello award-winning London based composer, who’s written music for a number of well-known TV shows and independent films. His TV credits include Primeval, Agatha Christie’s Marple, and most recently Amazon’s fashion drama The Collection (Ivor Novello Award Nomination 2017). He also wrote the award-winning score for the BBC / Amazon’s Ripper Street (2014 Ivor Novello Award for Best Soundtrack), and his score for the BBC / Starz’s The Missing received a Primetime Emmy Nomination in 2015.

Along with his work for TV, Dominik has also composed the soundtracks for several British independent films, including the award-winning Nine Lives of Tomas Katz, Scenes of a Sexual Nature (Ewan Mc Gregor) and the Italian All About You (Charlotte Rampling). He operates out of his Crimson Noise Studio in the Old Truman Brewery, London.

When and how did you first become interested in music?

I come from family that is passionate about making and experiencing music, so I had no choice but to fit in. It turned out that music was an enjoyable thing. I started playing flute and piano. Upon leaving school I worked to save up for my first big synth. With this vintage Polymoog, a strange analogue monster of a synth, I started to score films – but I had to make my own films to do that. I started with curious stop frame animations and ambitious live action literary adaptions, with Krautrock type soundtracks, inspired by 1970s-80s Werner Herzog films with their Popol Vuh scores. I started a band, releasing records and touring and with 20 I moved to London to study film. I continue the film creation / music composing combo to this day. I have a new operatic project in development. The last opera I did was a motorbikers from hell type story, which I composed and directed.

 What are your musical influences?

Rimksy-Korsakov, The Can, Sparks, JS Bach, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Greek, Macedonian folk music, David Bowie, Pulp, Vaughan-Williams, Nile Rogers, John Adams, Jon Brion, Michael Nyman, Nick Cave, Alexandre Desplat, Danny Elfman, Mychael Danna, Les Baxter, Bernard Herrmann, Serge Gainsbourg, Stravinksky, Outkast, Carter Burwell, Goran Bregovic, Kate Bush, Charlie Mingus, Aphex Twin, Jerry Goldsmith,  and many many more

 How did you get your first job in the industry?

My first jobs were playing the piano in London theatres. I was consecutively asked to compose the music as well as just playing, and then enjoyed scoring plays on various stages for a few years. At the same time I was asked to score short films and ads. I didn’t have to make my own films anymore in order to write soundtracks, filmmakers actually now entrusted me with their material. The line-ups evolved in size, from a couple of solo instruments, to chamber orchestras.

 How did your first big project come about?

My first feature film was a dark thriller, which I recorded with big orchestra. I wasn’t really that experienced and it’s a miracle they trusted me to do it. Its title song, written for songstress Ute Lemper, did well in the classical charts. But it was a learning experience. But so are all the projects still now, after so many soundtracks with hundreds of hours of composed music, 20 years on. With each project I want to explore new avenues, it keeps it fresh for me, and a feel I’m still learning.

 What skills/personal attributes are most important to being successful?

Enjoy it – it’s fun. It’s easy to forget. The music will be better that way.

 What personal advice would you give to young musicians wanting to pursue music career?

Normally this question is answered with: “No matter what you do stay true to yourself and your music.” I’m never sure what that means. My advice would be try to be not too versatile. Explore one avenue and achieve something. People will be more interested in you than in a jack-of-all-trades.

 What do you love the most about your work?

1. The hilarity in the pub after a recording session that suffered from slight hiccups.

2. Having come to the studio at 7am and by 10am having broken the back of composing a big theme.

 What projects do you have coming up?

A supernatural thriller series for Netflix and a mini series of a Sci-Fi book adaption for BBC.

 How would you describe and rate the music scene in UK and what is the future of music?

Probably the best in the world. Genres cross more than anywhere else. The cities are great melting pots and so many musicians work across different music styles, resulting in a very varied scene that profits from inspiring synergies. In contrast American music centres like New York, Nashville, or LA are much further apart and have their own musical ecosystems.

In general though, thanks to ever improving communication, music will become more cosmopolitan. ‘World’ music will infuse all styles of music.
