First-time author here. Various opportunities are being presented to me (store signings, etc.) to promote my first book. Some are more time-intensive than others, but definitely manageable. Would you advise an author to do as many events as they reasonably can (without undue hardship)? Or should I pick and choose the ones where I have the potential to reach the most people?
Kind of... both?
Like, if you are up for it, and again, the asks are not terribly onerous, it's a good idea to be a YES person whenever you can. Because why not? You're building relationships, these people presumably like you / your book and will be impressed by your positivity etc etc, and they will potentially be supportive for your entire career.
AND -- you're never going to have a First Time Author experience again, right? So I say, milk it. And yes, for sure, some events WILL suck / not be worth it -- but also, you don't know what you don't know, right? MAYBE the Podunk County Booke Faire will end up being a pain in the ass where you sell two books and get a sunburn. (In which case, now you know to decline next time!) -- OR MAYBE, it will end up being a fun day where you connect with a bunch of educators and kids and other writers, and yeah, you get a little sunburn, but that's OK, now you know to pack more SPF next time! #WearSunscreen
That said - you don't HAVE to say yes to everything. If you have legit conflicts, or you feel like something WILL be too much effort, or you've done the cost-benefit analysis and realize it will take too much time away from your dedicated writing or family time or whatever, you're allowed to decline, just be super nice about it, and try not to leave people in the lurch by bailing last minute or anything like that.
I would just say, try not to do THE SAME THING too close together, because you'll be cannibalizing your own audience. For example - have ONE evening launch party in your town. IF there is another bookstore in the next town over, do something totally different with them in a different week, like a Saturday morning story-time, or a panel event with multiple authors, or a virtual event, or SOMEthing that isn't just a re-boot of the same evening event again. Just because the same people are unlikely to come out for you again and again, so you want to maximize the chances that people actually pick one event and come to it.
Like, say you are a picture book author who lives in the Bay Area. You are lucky that there are SO MANY bookstores there -- so you might get pulled in a few directions. In this scenario, you live in Palo Alto, but you know a lot of people in SF and Oakland as well. Instead of trying to do similar book signings at every store in the area, be judicious: You could do, say, an evening launch party in Palo Alto the week of release, a virtual event on a different day run through a different store for all your far-flung friends and family, a daytime story-time event on a later Saturday at a children's bookstore in San Francisco, and an "in-conversation-with" two-author event a couple weeks later in Oakland. And meanwhile, sign stock at all the bookstores in the area and post about them on socials! That way you are covering all your bases but nobody feels like their audience is being split.

Daily reminder that we live with a powerful natural carcinogen that just happens to deliver benefits along with potential disaster — like medication. Use correctly for the safe, desired result: wear UPF clothing, SPF30 or higher, and minimize exposure during peak UV hours. To idiots who avoid sunscreen because plants don’t need sunscreen (as per a recent stitched post by @208skindoc), you do you. But may I recommend googling “how humans are different from foliage?” Eating only vegetation does not transform us from animals to plants. We are NOT Groot. 🙄 #natural #carcinogens #WearSunscreen #SunscreenSavesLives #WeAreNotGroot #SunSmart #Beautygeeks (at Canada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSZlmRZLx2c/?utm_medium=tumblr

Made it to the TOP of #angelslanding ! 5.6 mile hike up a steep mountain. This is one of the most strenuous and terrifying hikes in #zionnationalpark with 5700ft drop offs—one misstep and you’re falling. Sadly, several people have died hiking this trail. I conquered my fear of heights today! Next step is #skydiving ! It’s one more month of #Summer! I’m enjoying myself. My homegirl and I are back in tune and hitting the beach. Seems like all is right with the world since that Jadakiss versus! #HipHop may be getting a revival. So yknow I’ve been in my NY bag. Happy to see the OGs getting their second wave in today’s climate. So, everyone enjoy yourself! #StayHydrated! #WearSunscreen! Throw on yo swimsuits and/or trunks and enjoy! I’ve been writing like crazy. Tryna manifest some work. Talking my shit season in action. Detoxing. Working on my tan. Tryna end this quarter on a high note. Goals made and vision illustrated. Prioritizing my beach visits & yoga sessions to prepare for my dance classes. Friday, I find out what my Chiropractor has to say about my knee. I’m going back to my dance classes no matter what. I need art in my life. There’s no other time like today. I’ve had all of my art dreams explored. Now I’m tryna maintain a lifestyle where I get to adorn my schedule with art, literature, music, dance and theatre every day all day. My life has become so full of activity and rhythm again. Then I spend my nights imagining how I can take what I know now to where I wanna be. I wonder do others imagine their life in sound. I want my life to hum like the waves when they pull onto beach. Right before the wind breezes by and kisses my ears and caresses my curls. When the tides pull away it’s a silent roll backwards, peacefully sinking back into the great big blue glass of life’s vitality. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSYPKFuLNA2/?utm_medium=tumblr

OMG! Thanks to everybody who came out to the North Park Book Fair here in hot as f San Diego!! And thanks especially to @burn_all_books for inviting me to guest star at their tent for a few hours!! Also thank you to @inscriptu for their INCREDIBLE work printing like 95% of my stuff :,) y’all are amazing. It was so great to be a part of another event! It’s always so life-affirming and exhilarating, especially when I’m asked to sign my work 😭😭😭. Can’t wait to schedule more events like this one and meet even more new friends and fans!! •• P.S. In some of these photos, the colors seem a little weird because i was under a green tent (WHICH I THANK GOD FOR BECAUSE HOLY CRAP THIS CALIFORNIA SUN IS BRUTAL) but it sort of shaded all the pics with this green filter haha, which was a little difficult to edit out, but I did my best <3!! I’m absolutely not complaining tho because I’m too white to be outside in the high noon sun without having some shade to hide under lolol. I still applied sunscreen every hour though lol. Gotta do those 👏🏻#preventativemeasures 👏🏻#wearsunscreen 👏🏻 💯••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #northpark #northparkbookfair #verbatimbooks #fantagraphics #comicsart #comicsartist #raquellejacqueline #raquellejac #undergroundcomics #undergroundcomix #comixxx #comix #fantagraphics #fantagraphicsbooks #autobiographicalart #autobiographicalcomics #bookfair (at Verbatim Books) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRhxjXkFFV_/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hello lovelies! . Y'all wanted work clothes, so you've got me on the steps at my work. Scene change! There's only so many places at my apartment. . Made the mask, pink shirt was a target sale find, and who knew carhartt made scrub pants? Keen steel toe boots with dickies work socks protect my feet. It's too hot not to stay hydrated, so I also have my nalgene water bottle, straight out of the freezer. . Yes, it's overcast. Guess who still has sunscreen on? This person here! Protect that skin, no matter the amount of melanin or how easily you burn. Use broad spectrum, spf 30+ all year round. This has been a skincare PSA. . Night all! I'm hoping to have my Wednesday's back off, but if I don't, style day might change to Tuesday for variety's sake. . . . . . . . #maine #workclothes #onwednesdayswewearpink #carhartt #Keen #target #nalgene #dickies #stayhydrated #wearsunscreen #protectyourskin #atwork #style #humpday #wednesday (at Bangor, Maine) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB1OoYLBqQ9/?igshid=2a3a1dlupxnb
