Six Impossible Things

Thanks for the title, truly, it certainly made my imagination happy! My mind immediately jumped to those Five Times challenges, I wrote Nikola’s part… and then the rest happened. It was most certainly not my intention to make it this dark! Blame it on late night studying and then writing all this in one go I suppose.

A second round through history. Where do you draw the line of how much you dare to affect? When does acting, or choosing not to act, become playing god?

In the end there were many small things she dared to do that, should a mistake be made, might risk altering the timeline. Things her old self hadn’t been able to explain, ‘miracles’ that had been oh so convenient in times of need, funding that had all but fallen into their lap when resources risked running low… In a time before digital surveillance and the World Wide Web, pushing the boundaries of what was perceived to be possible without being detected wasn’t very difficult. No. Her trip to the past had not been a century worth of vacations, but the countless of species thought extinct even by her past self, now safely moved to her new sanctuary made it more than worth it.

Some things, however, were too impossible even for Helen Magnus to accomplish.

She had entertained the idea. Of course she had. Ever since finding out about the energy being cohabiting his body she had tried to figure out a way of separating them. She did not believe it to be the cause of all the violence, but it had certainly played a major role, of that she was certain. However, even with a hundred years to think, she could not come up with a way of keeping it contained. Not without completely altering the future. And perhaps she didn’t dare to find out how much of it was all John in the end. At some point, the victims of Jack the Ripper became a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

Letting Nikola in on the truth had always been part of the plan. It resulting in him nagging her for investment advice had not. Because one did not need a hundred and fifty years of experience to disbelieve that he would keep a low profile and use the money sparingly. The first time, she had begged him to stay. Had wanted to force him into accepting more of her blood. Now, standing in front of the newly covered grave, watching the single white tulip next to the flowers her past self had left mere hours ago, she couldn’t help but think that he made the right decision. Espionage and bank robberies aside, seeing the never ending violence of the future would’ve broken her dear Nigel. As he had told her all those years ago, humans were never supposed to live that long. When exactly she stopped thinking of herself as human, she didn’t know.

Heart in her throat, she watched as the consciousness stored in the modified Praxian computer was transferred into the sleeping body. Antediluvian Saurfolk (Eoanthrosaurus lemurica) – Second Prehistoric Race

The Antediluvian Saurfolk (Eoanthrosaurus lemurica) is the functionally extinct species of theropod introduced in No Way to Seaway, and it is considered the tertiary and quaternary antagonist in the series.

Physiology

The Antediluvian Saurfolk is similar to three species: Common Saurfolk, with black or auburn hair and blue eyes, Seashore Saurfolk, with webbed feet, and Volcanic Saurfolk, with fire breath and very long claws.

Abilities

Unlike three modern-day species, the ancestor of three Saurfolk species lacks any abilities such as higher intelligent, breaths fire, and swim and breathed in underwater. However, it can shape shifting into human or Fomorian, this species evolved by taking on human form and gaining political power to manipulate human societies, as well as destroying the Isu.

The IQ of this species is the same as that of humans: 85. Unlike their ancestors, the Antediluvian Saurfolk's skin was weakened by either Sundrop Flower/Moonstone Opal magic or both, as were Isu weaponry and equipment.

Not knowing how Antediluvian Saurfolks are mortal foes of the Fomorians both then and now, not just due to cultural differences, traditions, languages, and resources, but also due to the unknown ramifications of what occurred in prehistoric times.

When Mother Teresa and Diana Spencer died in the same year in 1997, it became clear that the Antediluvian savages were constantly angry with them, leading to a silent genocide across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. It acknowledges that the Antediluvian Saurfolks demonstrated significantly more animal behavior than their ancestors.

Distribution and Habitat

Fun with Flags

I should have posted this on Flag Day (June 14th) but, as it so often does, life got in the way. So here’s a bonus Word of the Day you can save for next June. The Word of the Day is “flag.”

We’re talking about the noun here – a banner (star-spangled or not), pennant, banderole or gonfalon, generally made of cloth and attached by one end to a pole or rope, used as an emblem, symbol or signal.

If you were a regular viewer of The Big Bang Theory on TV, you’ll know that “Fun with Flags” was a recurring bit, an online web show within the sitcom. “Fun with Flags” was comedy gold.

So, where did the word “flag” come from? Who the hell knows? No one can say for sure, although there is some speculation that the noun is related to the verb “to flag,” meaning to droop, go limp, flutter or flap around loosely. The verb probably had its roots in Old Norse “flaka,” to flicker, flutter or hang loose.

The only national flag that is non-quadrilateral (that is, four-sided) is the flag of Nepal. At least one online source says the jagged edges are supposed to represent the Himalayas.

The flag of Mozambique is one of the very few national flags featuring weapons, and possibly the only one with an automatic weapon – in this case, an AK-47. There’s also an open book and a hoe, for what it’s worth.

And for overall weirdness, it’s hard to beat Sicily’s flag, which features three bare legs (a “triskeles”) surrounding a Medusa head, with three stalks of wheat growing out of it (Some say it’s three ears of corn, but it sure looks like wheat to me). We could go into the symbolism of all that at some length, but that’s all the time we’ve got for today’s episode of Fun with Flags…and Words.
