I feel like EVerybody my parents' age is SO weirdly aggressive about genderizing little kids' behavior. like at christmas when my aunt said about the kids' loud joyful playing, "I'm so glad I had girls," as if the reason these kids were so rudely having loud fun was that they were boys. rather than that they were little kids and it was christmas and they're not afraid to audibly have fun?

and then just last week I was chatting to a different unrelated aunt and describing how brave and intrepid and investigative the baby is and saying how when I was a kid I was so much more passive and cerebral and likely to just observe things as they came. and I said "but he's different, he's just like--" and my aunt interrupted knowingly "--a boy?" and I was like no actually I was going to say he's just like harriet m. welsch from harriet the spy. remember harriet

People who know me usually assume I know Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (valid assumption). But actually, my first thought has always been Harriet M. Welsch. When I was eight years old, I wanted to be Harriet the Spy. I made a little tool belt and carried a notebook around writing down everything I saw (even though there wasn't much going on around my rural Georgia cul-de-sac). I started writing stories because of her, and I still exclusively buy composition notebooks to write in because of her.

Thank you, Michelle, for giving me something I didn't know I needed, that I'd carry with me for the rest of my life. I'll have a tomato sandwich for you.
