FONTAINES D.C. — Romance (23 August 2024)
I’ve always been interested in the argument, or the perspective, of seeing delusion and romance as one and the same [...] And I think the place of romance that I spoke about, in the title track, it’s that place, it’s that refuge. And I think there’s a denial, maybe, involved. You’re dressing your life up in this romantic way. And I think there’s a line to blur between madness and this denial, which is necessary in order to get on. The world is absolutely f–ked, and it’s difficult to know which way to turn. — Grian Chatten +

“The idea of the title ['Starburster'] is about embracing the necessary delusion in terms of how to function [in everyday life]. I imagine it as a world within a snow globe, that you can slip into like a warm bath, but within that world is all the madness and the hysteria. It's about embracing that.”
Tumblr media
“This album is about my fascination with falling in love at the end of the world: the album is about protecting that tiny flame. The bigger armageddon looms, the more precious it becomes.”
Tumblr media
“We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance. Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as ‘Dogrel‘. The second album is about that detachment, and the third is about Irishness dislocated in the diaspora. Now we look to where and what else there is to be romantic about.”

“A part of the idea of the title Romance was to kind of play it or nuance it off the grotesqueness of the sound in a lot of the record. The excess and the machinery. The industrial nature of it. I feel like the artwork really captures that because to me the heart looks very metallic and simulates feeling. Simulates emotion.” - Grian Chatten

I learned that you can make it to that kind of level and remain in tact as a human being. And I learned that Sheffield’s people are very similar to Irish people. We bumped into them at the same pub a fair few times. But I believe it goes beyond that.

i smell like smoke from electrical fires — a year-end, happy-birthday-to-me mix.
I used to always make a mix tape or mix CD or playlist for the end of the year/my birthday. The mixes were always a combination of songs I listened to a lot that year, songs that summed up my year in some way, and then a few that I just felt like hearing at the time I was making the mix. I started doing it at around age 12, and continued the tradition until I was about 35. But that was the year 8tracks died for a while, and at the time I didn't have a way to make tapes, and also that was the year I started using Spotify, so I kinda just depended on Spotify wrapped to sum up my music-listening habits for the year. Well, since I no longer use Spotify, and since I do have a way to make tapes, I decided to get back into the habit.
As per usual, I made a YouTube version as well, in case anyone else wants to give it a listen. If you listen to we'll burn it & we'll build it again (the mix I made in July) followed by this one, you'll get a pretty clear picture of what I was listening to a lot this year/what my year was like.

MX LONELY - Rest in Salt
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
World/Inferno Friendship Society - Burn & Scar
Daycare Swindlers - Darkness

Big Thief - Vampire Empire
Superchunk - Crossed Wires [this is the song from which the title originates]
Green Day - When I Come Around

Bikini Kill - Capri Pants
Worriers - Pollen in the Air
Team Dresch - #1 Chance Pirate TV
Side B
Sinead O'Connor - Black Boys on Mopeds

there’s something about the line ‘you will see beauty give way to something strange’ that just so succinctly captures the wearing off of euphoria and melting into a pool of second thoughts, doubts and even a slight chill. He’s only fucking done it again, Grian.

Playing the ask game: 4, 13, 22!
Hope you're getting some good rest in/feeling better!
Covid is kicking my butt right now and music is about the only thing making it manageable. 🙂
hello lovely! 😘
thank you, i’m still feeling pretty rotten tbh 😢 i’m so sorry you are too, sending hugs and all the get well soon vibes 💗 i hope you feel lots better soon and that you have plenty of good music to comfort you along the way!
4) what’s your spotify?
i have pretty much everything on my spotify private apart from my four walls writing playlist, i’ll link that here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/16axLKFfru9UfPTDRKGeYt?si=-WnTQwryQlS_q1y75SO0nA&pi=e-7HZ2MWn0TQeH (i’m constantly adding to it!) 🥰
13) name four or more flawless albums?
okay this was tough to narrow down, but for me i’m defining flawless as the kind of incredible albums that are a work of art and i never want to skip as single song on, so:
humbug by arctic monkeys
romance by fontaines dc
three cheers for sweet revenge by my chemical romance
like clockwork… by queens of the stone age
because of the times by kings of leon
in utero by nirvana
one man band by miles kane
(there are so many others but i’ll limit myself!)
22) songs that describe you/your life?
oh god, this is actually so hard. off the top of my head, the ones that come to mind rn are:
(i’m not okay HAD to be on there because when i first heard it at thirteen i’d never heard a song that spoke to me so much. i wouldn’t say it necessarily describes me now, but it definitely describes a large chunk of of time i have lived that is very much a part of me!)
thank you so much for these 🫶

“I did a really weird thing where I went straight from Tokyo – where we finished the tour – to LA on my own without a real plan, or even a particular fondness for the city. I went because I associated LA with being purely on tour, and I was afraid of not being on the road; taking a step back from performing can be quite scary when it’s such a big part of your identity. I bought some equipment to record out there, and then I was on a call with a counsellor who specialises in speaking with touring artists. He advised me to take a break and stop writing. That’s quite a profound thing: to try and imagine yourself outside of what you do.” - Grian Chatten
