Good morning, this is still making me laugh so I’ll share it here

I saw a tweet on Twitter yesterday that was like “if we could go the speed of light we could shrink the distance to the andromeda galaxy, meaning we could get there in ONE MINUTE but four million years would have passed back on earth”

(I’m paraphrasing just a titch. See below.)

Now I’m no astrophysicist, but I do have an affinity for all things space, and I can tell you that Andromeda being 2.5 million light years away means we cannot get there in one minute, even travelling at the speed of light (for example, light from our own sun takes eight minutes to reach us, and how much further is M31).

I’m also still not an astrophysicist, but unless I’ve been misled in my astronomy classes, there’s not really any way to shrink 2.5 million light years (a unit of distance) into anything less… how do you shrink the distance. I’m so confused. Was this very poorly worded about time dilation??

Lastly, still not an astrophysicist, but travelling one minute at the speed of light would put you about 60 seconds x (3.00E8 meters/second) = 1.8E10 meters away, or about 1/8 of the way to the sun.

I’m not an astrophysicist. But I am a chemist. And I love stoichiometry. So I did some math. (Stoich is math lite for me; yummy aspartame makes the brain go brrrr)

It’s about 2.4E22 meters to Andromeda (or an unmeaningful 2.4E19 km or 1.49E19 miles, although for reference this is roughly 10^10 times further away than Neptune is, so.) This is pronounced as the very real number of 24 sextillion meters (or 14.9 quintillion miles). That’s a big number. (It’s converted down from light years; light would take 2.5 million years to go 24 sextillion meters.)

Assuming that first number is correct, I wanted to see how fast you WOULD have to go to get to M31 in one minute. The answer? 4.00E20 meters/second, or 1.33E12 times the speed of light. Here, let me write that out for you.

1,330,000,000,000 times the speed of light.

Still not an astrophysicist, still a space nerd. For reference, in Star Trek, the warp factor is the speed of light cubed. (The full equation is V = WF^3(c), or the velocity is equal to the warp factor cubed times the speed of light.) So if Kirk says “bring us to warp three, Mister Sulu” then they’re going 3^3c, or 9c, or nine times the speed of light. I believe at one point the rebuilt Enterprise-A had a warp 12, which is 12^3 or 1728 times the speed of light. You see how that’s nowhere NEAR 1.33E12 💀

(I’m imagining a “Mister Sulu, take us to warp 10,997” and laughing my ass off btw)

My math is below in case you want to check it out. I’m fairly confident in my numbers, but while stoich is simple enough, light units are difficult because they’re not time, they’re distance, but they masquerade around wearing time’s mangled corpse to throw you off. On purpose. Because they hate you. Intentionally.

That documentary, especially this part and the one of her in front of her all-white-old-business-men squad and only her mom supporting her, was sooo scripted and rehearsed, and even her dad being """"the villain"""" was very sugar-coated, his real " motivation" for the disapproval was actually that he feared for her safety (awww! said the swifties), and not his political beliefs. In fact, a couple of months after the documentary was released, he was already in The Man music video with all the "I'm so happy I worked with my wonderful dad" fluff.

it's all just further proof that taylor is most likely a closeted republican. or she's one of those "i'm a moderate/centrist!" but only votes republican ever.

Okay so I've got a idea of what I want the concept for my Pokemon fic to be.

New name: When All Is Said and Done: Stories from the Champions. The story follows three former Pokemon Champions: April, Goldie and Beryl (who I’ll refer to as the leads or the Champion Trio). 

During the events of the story, the Champion Trio (who are all in their 20s) all run a Pokemon Sanctuary togather. April is working on a biography about what it was like for the three of them growing up to become League Champions. Goldie works as an artist, and Beryl works with several charities that help with the protection and conservation of endangered Pokemon.

The story is split up between the adult versions of the leads and flashbacks to their youths.

There would also be side plots from the perspective of the Pokemon, but it would be made clear the trainers don't understand them.

sorry for the incoming wall of text, OP, but i need someplace to put my feelings about the devastating contrast between this collection of scenes where faifa very performatively bemoans his single status and the actual loneliness buried beneath the boisterous, expressive exterior the entire time. but we saw it in later in that episode, we saw it when mom revealed the real reason she chose to leave with faifa instead of yotha, we saw it when he resigned himself to seeing her off at the airport, shoving his feelings into that hidden place once more—unable to meet anyone's eyes or maintain his happy mask but still putting on a show of support. yotha's emotional catharsis coming at the expense of faifa's heartbreak made that scene such a gut punch.

perth and junior both acted the hell out of that scene in different ways (perth's trembling wai of apology, junior's muted expressions), and my heart broke for both of them, but damn if it didn't perfectly set up the emotional backdrop for faifawine's arc. i am BEYOND excited.
