off the rack #1292

I sure got a heavy cardio workout yesterday scraping off the ice from both vehicles after the rain on Saturday froze under a layer of snow overnight into Sunday morning. That kind of temperature change will give you whiplash. The frozen blowing snow covered half of our birdfeeders too so I had to clear those off for our feathered friends. It's despairing when the temperature drops during the day instead of getting warmer. Stupid Arctic Air Mass.
The Red Mother #1 - Jeremy Haun (writer) Danny Luckert (art) Ed Dukeshire (letters). The first page with the disintegrating skull will give you an idea of what this beautifully drawn new story is about. Daisy and her boyfriend Luke are walking home from dinner when they are attacked in a scary black space behind an iron gate. Luke is hauled into the blackness and Daisy has her right eye plucked out but survives. By the end of this issue she's seeing scary things through a haze of red. I loved the art in this and look forward to meeting Mother.
Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy #4 - Jody Houser (writer) Adriana Melo (pencils) Mark Morales & Wade von Grawbadger (inks) Hi-Fi (colours) Gabriela Downie (letters). The Floronic Man attacks the girls again. This time in a roadside dinosaur theme park run by a crazy old lady. Poison Ivy figures out how the bad guy is tracking them and Harley fixes that problem with a machete. This is one crazy story.
Punisher Soviet #2 - Garth Ennis (writer) Jacen Burrows (pencils) Guillermo Ortego (inks) Nolan Woodard (colours) Rob Steen (letters). Frank has reluctantly taken on a teammate in his fight with a Russian mobster. This issue starts that guy's origin story.
Something is Killing the Children #4 - James Tynion IV (writer) Werther Dell'Edera (art) Miquel Muerto (colours) AndWorld Design (letters). Erica goes shopping for monster killing tools and into the woods we go. Time to meet the monster.
X-Force #3 - Benjamin Percy (writer) Joshua Cassara (art) Guru-eFX (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). The enemy is revealed and they are Xeno. Kind of reminds me of the Court of Owls from Batman. Wolverine and Kid Omega rescue Domino from their clutches while a new Charles Xavier is hatched with a rebuilt Cerebro to lead the war. I liked how Magneto made a sword for Charles from the broken Cerebro helmet.
The Dollhouse Family #2 - M. R. Carey (writer) Peter Gross (layouts) Vince Locke (finishes) Cris Peter (colours) Todd Klein (letters). Maybe I'm wrong but I suspect that the M. in the writer credit stands for Mike. I loved Mike Carey's Vertigo books and this has a very familiar feel. I like how the house is a character too.
The Immortal Hulk #28 - Al Ewing (writer) Tom Reilly & Matias Bergara (art) Chris O'Halloran (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). The villain gets the spotlight this issue as Roxxon C.E.O. Dario Agger tries to find a way to fight the Hulk. He goes to find an ally on Monster Isle and I laughed when I saw who it was.
Valkyrie #6 - Al Ewing & Jason Aaron (writers) Pere Perez (art) Jesus Aburtov (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). What a great read. This is an example of how two good writers can produce a highly enjoyable issue of a comic book. Add to that very nice art and you've got a "pick of the week". Part one of "Strange Aeons" starts a new story where Val needs to put together a team to save Death. Doctor Strange is her first recruit and Night Nurse, Cardiac, Doctor Faiza Hussain AKA Excalibur and Manikin make the journey to the valley of the shadow of death. Talk about D-list, but I trust that Al and Jason will make good use of these heroes.
Detective Comics #1017 - Tom Taylor (writer) Fernando Blanco (art) John Kalisz (colours) Travis Lanham (letters). This is a great one issue story if you want to see why this comic book is on my "must read" list. Batman solves two crimes and I was happy to see Damian helping out. If Tom Taylor did a Robin book, I'd read that too.
Fantastic Four #17 - Dan Slott (writer) Luciano Vecchio, Carlos Magno, Bob Quinn & Sean Izaakse (art) Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). I was wondering why this story was called "Point of Origin" and this issue explain why. We all know that the Fantastic Four were bombarded with cosmic rays when they took their maiden flight and that's what gave them their super powers. Little did we know it wasn't an accident. It's a subtle change and doesn't make a lot of difference in the grand scheme of things but it is kind of neat.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #13 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Javier Garron (art pages 1-2, 16-20) Kevin Libranda (art pages 3-8) & Alitha Martinez (art pages 9-13) David Curiel & Protobunker (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I usually get annoyed when an issue is drawn by a bunch of different artists but Javier, Kevin and Alitha all did a splendid job and the story flowed seamlessly. The awesome colouring job helped too. Say hello to Billie Mariana Morales. Miles is now a big brother.
Superman #18 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Ivan Reis (pencils) Joe Prado (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). As big a Brian Bendis fan that I am, I stopped reading this title because I wasn't interested in what was happening in the book. Now I'm interested again. Superman drops a bomb that's going to explode into all kinds of repercussions. I liked how Wonder Woman, Batman and Lex Luthor reacted to the news even though they don't utter a word. That's great art right there. The cover will give you a hint to what Superman's announcement is.
Fallen Angels #3 - Bryan Hill (writer) Szymon Kudranski (art) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). Cable, Psylocke and X-23's mission to save some children continues and one of the heroes is captured by the enemy. I hope their next story happens in the daytime because these issues have been very dark.
Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child#1 - Frank Miller (writer) Rafael Grampa (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) John Workman & Deron Bennett (letters). No returning Dark Knight since this story features Lara, Jonathan and Carrie, the kids of the Big Two. They battle old man Joker and old man Darkseid. I loved the art. The writing was annoyingly repetitive. That seems to be Franks writing style now using lots of verbs and choppy little captions. I don't like it. The thing about comic books is that the art and writing go hand in hand and I just couldn't stop reading the words part way and just look at the pretty pictures. Seeing Greta Thunberg on the last page just made me love Rafael even more.
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #14 - Tom Taylor (writer) Marguerite Sauvage (art flashback) Ken Lashley (art) Marguerite Sauvage & Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Crappydoodles! This is the last issue. I am sad. I enjoyed the entire 14-issue run. It was Juann Cabal's art that got me hooked but Tom's writing kept me reading. His stories were very Mister Rogers and I liked them a lot. He showed Peter committed to his sense of responsibility and ended this issue nicely. I'm going to miss this title.
The Batman's Grave #3 - Warren Ellis (writer) Bryan Hitch (pencils) Kevin Nowlan (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) Richard Starkings (letters). Batman is working on a case of murder disguised as a suicide. I like how this issue starts and ends with him working the case with Alfred in the Batcave that bookends 10 pages of wordless solo crime scene investigation and a fight with an intruder for a crucial clue.
2099: Doom #1 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Marco Castiello (art) Chris Sotomayor (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This one-shot doesn't add much to the overall story but I like Chip's writing so I read it. Victor winds up in 2099 fighting his future self. The last page doesn't make a lot of sense so skipping this comic won't hurt much.
2099: Spider-Man #1 - Nick Spencer (writer) Ze Carlos (art) Brian Reber & Andrew Crossley (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I was as confused as the Miguel in this story when I got to the end. We get a sense of what's happening in 2099 that's bad for everyone but there's no connection to the main story as far as I can make out. These 2099 one-shots have been a waste of time, which doesn't bode well for Marvel's next big event. I'll read 2099 Omega to see if there's a point to this story and I'll read The Amazing Spider-Man #36 that ties into this event because that book is on my "must read" list, but Nick Spencer is skating on thin ice with me.
Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill #1 - Michael Moreci (writer) Alberto Alburquerque (art) Jay David Ramos (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This was a good single issue story. Beta Ray Bill goes up against the Sentry and saves our universe from the scourge of the Cancerverse. I liked that he's teamed up with Lockjaw.
Annihilation - Scourge: Silver Surfer #1 - Dan Abnett (writer) Paul Davidson (art) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I was asked recently if the Silver Surfer was good or evil after the Silver Surfer Black story and I didn't know the answer until now. This tie-in one-shot takes place right after Silver Surfer Black as Norrin Radd breaches the barrier between the positive universe and the Negative Zone to investigate what's causing the mass exodus from Annihilus's realm. Here he finds the means of defeating the Void controlled Sentry and thereby save two universes. He also discovers the ability to merge with another being sort of like DC's Deadman.

If Danny and Jazz were related to anyone on the justice league who would it be? Also what would it be like for said family members coming to town and visiting the Fenton's not only to find out the phantom is their family but that his own parents want to murder him would the family member sue for custody of Danny and Jazz just to get the both of them away from Jack and Maddie and would Vald mind his own dame business and not help Jack and Maddie with the money to counter sue
i’m fond of the batman is a secret distant cousin thing, mostly because it involves mocking Vlad with the i’m closer to Danny than you, and the general rich guy cattiness at parties and stuff. i imagine that as a kid the Fentons were the cousins his parents said stay away from because they’re uncouth nutters (jokes on them, their son is a bat furry) and when Bruce got older he sought them out and felt... yeah, crazy... but charming? and their technology works? oh shit ghosts are real, better fond this.
later when he finds out Danny is his nephew and also a young superhero. his level on the ‘to be adopted list’ is moved up significantly. he definitely takes in Dani at this point too. Danny doesn’t realize that his uncle is batman for a significant amount of time from when batman figured it out. he could in theory sue for custody of Danny and Jazz but he respects there own desires and needs more. they’re established themselves as capable of taking care of themselves. he’s noticed that Jack and Maddie, for all their faults, do really love their children and aren’t knowingly attacking their son. he’s looking for other solutions before forcefully separating this family. a line has to be crossed before he makes the jump.
but yeah, that’s kinda an over used one.
the second guy my brain jumped to was doctor strange, even though that’s marvel. mostly because i feel like that would be the weirdest thing. like this guy, spent all this time meditating and onlocking his magic powers. isn’t he special? to find out at a family reunion that his cousin have been unlocking the secrets of life and death like it was nothing and one of their children is a legendary monster hybrid. like this has just been happening this whole time, in his own family, and he had no clue. what does he do with this information (i haven’t really read doctor strange, or seen the movie because it’s not epilepsy friendly, so others will know how he reacts better than me)
i think Kent's being related to Maddie has a certain logic to it and would be so awkward that it would be entertaining. like imagine that dinner, ‘we’ve invited may sisters’ and there family over’. Clark: “oh, hey Danny...” Danny, “hey sup-Clark.” like where i could see Danny being dense about Bruce Wayne being batman. Danny and superman will definitely recognize each other when they meet (unless you want to play the Danny is as dense as jack card which could be fun), superman would just be like, i know this abnormally slow heartbeat and Danny would be like ‘you’re not even wearing a mask. like glasses? that’s supposed to fool us? at least my secret identity has the excuse of being dead.”
with realizing Danny's parents are negligent, him trying to do the right thing and adopting Danny and jazz is a lot more likely. but Danny would be a lot more inclined to fight him on this. possibly with blackmail. Danny would feel guilty because Clark is doing this in earnest, but Danny doesn’t want to be separated from his family. there is also the matter that superman is probably not ready to be a father to two teenagers. he’s already barely there for his own son, he’s basically putting the work of parenthood on Louis, and i don’t think that’s fair to her. she’d still do it, because she has the morals to protect these kids too. but it’s still a big decision that would shake up all there lives.
finally, and this isn’t a secretly related, lets adopt Danny thing. i feel like Danny would adopt martian man hunter into the family. i feel like a good running joke is just Danny adding to the lie of, ‘hey mom and dad, remember Cousin Dani?’ ‘Cousin Conner?’ ‘Uncle Clark?’ ‘great cousin John?’ it’s getting progressively more ridiculous and Jack and Maddie still keep falling for it. jack will probably even go “Johny! you’ve certainly grown from the little thing you were before! i thought you were dead! you aren’t a ghost are you?” part of Danny adopting an alien thing is just because, who wouldn’t adopt an alien, especially this space nerd.but it also gives john something of a human family and more earthly ties.
it also leads me to the best one. which is, all these guys are related. they’re all already a family via the league. but some family reunion, where Danny is obligated to invite the family members that he’d lied about, and then it’s reveal that hey... the entire league are all kinda distantly related...awkwardness and chaos ensues. because every where you turn there’s gonna be “Phantom!?” “Aquaman!?” “Aquaman?” “Hawkwoman!?” and then the normal family members or just like “???” there will just be this silent agreement that they all need to lie their asses off until they get back to headquarters. and the lies aren’t matching up, but no one is drawing the right conclusions. and like no one knows which heroes are here and who they are, and there’s a lot of confusion and people keep getting surprised by the realization that some other league member is a family member. part of this might even be, other members of the league making up similar lies to Danny's lie.
it’s just disastrous in the best way. -Hestia

Can you write an imagine where Danny gets hurt during a mission (could be anything from a scratch to holy crap he needs a doctor stat) and the whole League freaks out including DaddyBats and they low key smother him during his recovery?
Phantom was hurt. BAD. No one really knew how it happened, but the end result was the Justice League finding out the true state of one of their members.
A freaking teen age boy who was considered both alive and dead.
At this point, no one should really be surprised at the half dead and alive thing. Yet they were surprised.
“HowcouldwenotnoticethatPhantomwasactuallyateen!” Flash had exclaimed rapidly once he was told that the bleeding black haired teen in Martian Manhunter’s arms was Phantom.
And now they were gathered around a bed that seemed to devour a sickly pale teen. They were clearly worried for their youngest member as he made a groan.
“Was there a license plate on that semi that hit me?” A non echoey version of Phantom’s voice croaked out of the pale teen. Blue eyes peered out of scrunched eyelids.
“Sorry kid, but there was no semi involved,” Green Lantern, Hal, weakly joked.
“Ya sure?” Phantom’s gaze went over to the pal pilot. He then blinked, finally gaining more focus. The blue eyed boy took notice of other Leaguers surrounding him.
“Hey, what’s with the long faces? You looked like someone died,” Phantom chuckled, trying to lighten the atmosphere but ended up into a fit of coughing and wheezing.
Seeing this made Flash run over with a glass of water. Carefully, he poured the drink down the teen’s throat once the coughing subsided.
“Thanks,” Phantom murmured with a small grin. However that grin faded as he saw just how grim everyone was.
“You gave us quite the scare there,” Superman told him, his own voice soft.
“What do you mean?” Phantom asked with confusion clear in his tone. Everyone exchanged glances.
“Here,” Wonder Woman said, taking hold of a metal try. She put it up in front of Phantom. What he saw made him tense up.
There were cuts with stitches and bruises all over his pale face. His black hair was an absolute mess and his blue eyes seemed to be dull.
Phantom was back to being human and now the Justice League knows about it.
“Oh,” he muttered. He gulped.
“You’re lucky you survived,” Batman told Phantom, “if it weren’t for Manhunter…”
Phantom turned to the Martian.
“Thanks J'onn,” he gave the alien a small smile. A smile was returned.
Silence.
“Sooo,” Green Lantern suddenly spoke, “why are you alive?”
Superman, Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter shook their heads while Flash groaned.
“What?” Green Lantern looked around.
Phantom huffed.
“No no, it’s about time I told you guys,” Phantom figuratively waved it away since he was tucked in so tight he couldn’t move his arms.
“You don’t have to tell us if you don’t want to,” Martian Manhunter informed the teen.
“It’s ok,” Phantom took a breath, preparing himself.
“My name is Danny Fenton and I’m fourteen years old. My parents are ghost hunters and for a long time they were working on a portal that would connect this dimension to the Ghost Zone, the dimension where ghosts live,” he stopped to take breather.
“About a year ago they completed it, but it didn’t work. The even unplugged it and plugged it back into the socket. I told my friends about it and one of them convinced me to take them to see it. That same friend managed to get me to see what the inside looked like. Said it would be cool. So I put on a jumpsuit that my parents made for me and went inside.”
At this point the air grew serious as they felt the climax coming.
“I was in a dark tunnel and couldn’t see where I was going. So I put my hand on the wall to help stabilize myself if I tripped or something. Turns out that dad put an ‘on’ button on the inside,” a grim smile made its way onto Phan-Danny’s face while the adults listened on with horror growing within them and settling deep within their bones.
“When I got out, I wasn’t the same. I looked like what you’re normally used to seeing me as. My friends were freaking out and crying. They thought they killed me, but to all of our surprise, a white ring appeared and turned me back. I was alive again…” Danny closed his eyes.
“I couldn’t control my powers for a time. Parts of my body suddenly disappeared and I would sometimes fall through my chair or my bed. Everything became harder when my parents invents started to react to me. My parents still chalk it up to some ectoplasm contamination.” At this point he knew he was spilling just about everything, but he couldn’t stop.
“After this one experienced I had with a ghost that kidnapped my friend for changing the lunch menu, I decided to be a hero. I mean, I got these powers so I might as well use them to help others.” A sigh.
“It’s strange. My friends, my sister, and just about all of my enemies know who I really am. No other human found out,” his eyes opened to show tired eyes, “until now.”
No one knew what to say.
“Thank you for trusting us with this knowledge,” Batman bowed his head to the halfa. He then took a step forward and laid a hand on the teen’s head.
“Get some rest.”
“You do know that I tend to heal fast… right?” Danny asked, glancing to the Dark Knight.
“I know.”
“So should we keep Phantom in the League?”
“I say yes.”
“He needs us, whether he knows it or not.”
“I like the kid, he’s got wit, sarcasm, sass, what isn’t to love? It would be a shame if he gets kicked out.”
“Well, if he stays or goes, I think Iris would love to have him over. Actually, I think my nephew, Wally, would be great friends with Danny.”
“Yes, and I can see him with Robin. What do you think Batman?”
“He can stay. Agent A would have a field day with him.”
“Hey, make sure Agent A doesn’t over feed him. Ma needs someone to try out her new recipes.”
“Then it is agreed?”
“Phantom stays.”
—((Sorry, not quite what you asked, but things just kinda happened.))
