I still think it's really funny that the "toothpaste"/"listerine" flag I (partially?) made back in 2016 based off an anon's suggestion took off and had so much discourse over it. Because I literally had NO idea about it until years later when I stumbled upon it randomly (iirc) because nobody said anything to my face about it ever. Even now I don't think anyone has said anything to me outside of direct responses of posts I made about it.
Like there's literally everyone across every spectrum of everything either loving or hating the flag for completely different reasons, some of which aren't even remotely true. But somehow it almost never reached me.
I'm just here playing in my mud pit trying to help people make and find flags and terms that make them happy while there's a whole war raging over (at least) one of them around the corner.
Anyway, I got burned out a while ago from making flags because people kept making like 100000 a day with photos and copyrighted images on them and I couldn't keep up so I don't know all the flags the youth are using anymore.
Anyway I just wanted to reiterate that I'm NOT a truscum. One of them took the flag and reuploaded it stating it was the "official" gay man flag and I guess that's when it exploded and people just assumed they made it?
I also still 100% support non-dysphoric/transitioning trans people, bi/pan lesbians/gay men, anyone with "weird" or "contradictory" labels, people with 500 genders or 0 genders or -62 genders, you can detransition, retransition, LMNOP-transition, you can change your sex but not your gender, you can reclaim your slurs, you can do whatever you want forever, just don't be an ass and for the love of cats stop making overly complex flags, they're supposed to be simple for a reason!

I made a gif showing the difference between the old Gay man flag VS the current one by @gayflagblog, since some people find it hard to differentiate them, and the older one was created by someone who has alledgedly done/said a lot of problematic things.
As you can see, the stripes in the new one are actually different, and not just "a brighter version" of the old ones as some people claim. After you pay enough attention to at least one of them, it becomes easier to distinguish between the two, personally I can know immediately which one it is whenever I see one of them being used!

to answer ur question the mlm flag is fine, people just rly like harassing the guy who made it (@gayflagblog) and shittalking it because he's trans and it looks similar to other flags because it has a white stripe for trans / nonbinary / GNC gay ppl so it makes terfs big mad
I swear non terfs also hate on it. I'm starting to think they just think it's ugly which is... subjective. I think a LOT of the flags are ugly (not naming names) but I wouldn't start shitting on them with my entire ass because of it.
most valid (using this word very loosely) reason I've heard to hating it is that it "looks like the lesbian flag but blue for boy" and honestly I don't see the problem in that.
anyways I think it's pretty and love that gay men have a flag just for them considering how the rainbow is less specific.

Wait, people criticized and don’t like the blue gay pride flag? Why? What did they say is wrong with it? The rainbow flag ended up being associated by most for the community as a whole despite everything, so as the lesbian flag was made I don’t understand why the hate for a flag for gay men/mascs
So, basically, people felt that the blue flag was a recolor of the lipstick lesbian flag, and thus stealing from lesbians and bad. Which, 1) it isn't, but 2) flags being inspired by other flags has been happening since pride flags started being a thing. The OG lesbian flag was based on another flag. It's another example of "there can be 0 overlap between queer people and any time we share ideas it's stealing"
People also justified hating that flag by saying that since it was "just the lesbian flag but blue" it was subscribing to gender roles, since it was "for boys". Which, again, 1) the colors DO having specific meanings and 2) many flags use "blue for boys" and it's never been a problem before, because it isn't one. @gayflagblog has the info on it if you wanna check it out

wait, so what is the actual story behind the mlm flag? (the one people seem to really hate so much).
buckle up.
in 2016, someone messaged a pride flag tumblr account (ask-pride-color-schemes) about what the gay/mlm flag could be. they suggested since the lesbian flag (at the time) was the lipstick lesbian flag without the lips, maybe the gay flag could be the bear flag without the paw.
another suggestion was to use the same set up as the lipstick lesbian flag (seven stripes with white in the middle).
the pride flag account pointed out that the colors of the bear flag might be too associated with bears for that to work, and that purple/blue in that set up was already being used as a butch lesbian flag, so they made a green/blue one instead.
source: https://ask-pride-color-schemes.tumblr.com/post/149449006549/relating-to-the-old-discussion-on-a-separate-flag
in 2019, someone (gayflagblog) decided to alter the flag that ask-pride-color-schemes made in order to address some of the issues people had with it, such as no meanings being attributed to it, and the assumption that it was just "lesbian flag but blue for boys".
the changes made, color-wise, are subtle enough that i still see people thinking they're the same flag made by the same person. the green stripes are more green than green-blue, and the blue stripes are slightly different shades. each color seems a little more distinct, whereas the colors of the first flag are very similar to each other.
as for the meaning of the flag, it's inspired by the creator's research into queer history, their and other people's experiences as gay men, and gilbert baker's flag.

people started aggressively hating this flag for being a "recolor" or "hue shift" of the sunset lesbian flag (orange/pink), but the sunset lesbian flag (the five stripe simplified version*) was voted on in a poll as the lesbian flag in 2018, a year after the green/blue gay flag color scheme was shared.
even though the final altered version of the gay flag was shared in 2019, it wasn't based on or a hue shift of the sunset lesbian flag.
(*the sunset flag was originally seven stripes by emily gwen, but was then simplified to five and three stripes by purrfectbycath, with the five stripe flag winning the poll.)

and yes, the gay flag was intended to have the same set up as the lipstick lesbian flag without the lips. but in 2010, the lipstick lesbian flag was stolen from the cougar flag, right down to the lips, which was created by a gay drag queen (fausto fernos) in 2008.
the cougar flag was inspired by the leather and bear flags from the '80s and '90s, which have nine and seven stripes, respectively, with white in between and a symbol in the corner.
sometime in 2015, the lips were removed from the lipstick lesbian flag and it was declared "the lesbian flag". once people learned of the lipstick lesbian flag "creator" being racist and lesbophobic and a terf and who knows what else, people started making alternatives, combining the lipstick and butch flags being the most popular idea, and thus the sunset flag.

so all in all, the seven stripe with white in the middle flag set up is not specific to lesbians, and actually originated amongst gay men. the gay flag is not stealing or copying from lesbians. gay and lesbian culture and symbolism is intertwined, and there's nothing wrong with being inspired by one another or wanting similar symbolism to represent shared struggles and solidarity.

If you're making things based on pride flags, I have a really simple request that enriches the entire queer community, which is this: include gay men.
I know cis gays already get all the attention, but hear me out on this. This isn't about hogging the spotlight.
I'll disclose that I have a personal stake. I'm gay and transmasc, which means straight people think I'm straight, and if I'm lucky, queer people think I'm a lesbian, but mostly I get "ally." I'm sure there are others to whom it is important to express that they are, specifically, male-aligned and attracted to the same.
But to a broader point, gay men don't own the rainbow. The rainbow pride flag is for everyone. But I see so many icon sets, and enamel pins, and so forth that use the rainbow as shorthand for "gay male only," sometimes explicitly. And I've seen some people say they didn't want to wear the rainbow because they're ace or bi or trans and not gay.
The designs I see most often currently are this one by @ask-pride-color-schemes
Tumblr media
And this similar but simplified flag by @gayflagblog
Tumblr media
I love these. I do think we should try to move away from just doing colored stripes for everything, but these look nice, and they complement the lesbian flag.
I know that making pride flag items isn't an effortless endeavor, and sometimes it just doesn't work out (I recall Sock Dreams struggled to get enough different shades of pink to make lesbian pride socks, and the results were less than ideal). You probably can't have all the flags, especially as more of them keep getting made, so at some point you have to draw the line on what's feasible and important to you. But give some thought to the MLM flag.
If you have another favorite flag for gay men, I'd love to see it! And I'd appreciate if you could get the word out.

The two flags are technically called "Sunset Lesbian" and "Ocean Gay" which is for gay men.
The research I found shows it was made by gayflagblog here on Tumblr in 2019 with this color breakdown "The top three stripes represent community, healing, and joy, the bottom three stripes represent pure love, fortitude, and diversity. Lastly, the white stripe was taken from the trans flag and represents all trans gay men." While the Sunset Lesbian was introduced by Emma Gwen on Tumblr in 2018 with this color breakdown "The colors represent (from top to bottom) the deep orange means gender non-conformity, the medium shade orange means independence, the light shade orange means community, the white represents unique relationships to womanhood, the light pink means serenity and peace, the next shade of pink means love and sex, the deep pink represents femininity."
Ohhh, thank you so much!

Hello I'm the one that sent the ask mentioning the Achellian flag. I wasn't familiar with the purple flag you were talking about from gayflagblog, I'm sorry. I remembered another flag circulating long time ago which was made by an ass, so i thought it was the same. You didn't include a source for your flag you were talking about in post replies, and Gayflagblog doesnt come up in google search so I was trying to piece it together myself. I got it wrong though and I'm sorry

I'm not trying to make discourse whatsoever I promise, just wanted to let you know the blue and green gay flag wasn't actually made by a gay man and is heavily passed around in truscum circles, that's mainly the reason people don't like it
There's two versions of the blue/green flag I've seen and I think thats the description for the FIRST one which is this one
Tumblr media
the one I know and am talking about is the one from gayflagblog which is similar but more green/purple and blue
Tumblr media
given the twitter connected to it as well I'm pretty sure the one that created this is a gay trans man who very clearly supports NB people/is clearly not a truscum
also sorry to be Rude but "mainly the reason" my ass the only thing I've seen people bitch about is the color palette/comparing it to toothpaste and how it's lesbophobic bc it has the same format/is supposedly just a blue filter over the current lesbian flag lmao. I haven't seen a single goddamn REAL criticism of this flag

Hi you may be totally uninterested in this in which case feel free to ignore but the blue/green gay flag was made by gayflagblog who I’ve never seen be exclusive in any way (I heard drama of someone else pretending to have made the flag?)
But if you’re looking for a different gay flag, there’s a green/pink version and one I almost never see called the Larkspur gay flag.
Anyway nice edits!
ahhh okay!! thanks a lot, wasn't too sure about it so I removed it just in case,,,
