Sweet Love
You and Travis are savoring the last moments before your family grows
Contains: Fluff, discussion of pregnancy and starting a family, an allusion of smut
Tumblr media
The warm sun kissed your skin as you laid out on the lounge chair, a perfect view of the Mediterranean coast line from where you sat. You wiggled your toes, relishing in the quiet and peacefulness of a late morning spent by the pool of your villa. You and Travis had escaped to the Spanish islands to get away from the craziness of Kansas City and your schedules before your lives changed forever and you became parents.
You rubbed your belly, feeling as the baby moved around, waking up from his second nap of the day. "You are definitely my child", you laughed to yourself, "you already know the importance of a good nap."
"Good Morning", Travis walked out to the patio, giving you a gentle smile. His swim trunks hung low on his hips, his bare chest on display. He leaned over your chair to give you a soft kiss on your forehead, tasting a combination of your sunscreen and the salty air on his lips. "Why didn't you wake me up?"He lays a hand on your belly as he sat down next to you in the neighboring lounge chair.
"You looked so cute sleeping, it looked like you were dreaming. Besides, I was really enjoying the time with Bubs." You moved his hand to the side, allowing him to feel the baby kick.
"I'm telling you right now, I think he's gonna be a kicker. Follow in his father's footsteps."
"We'll see." You smiled, knowing Travis was already imagining his son's draft day. "He might surprise us and want to play soccer, or maybe hockey."
"I think I can learn to like those sports." Travis joked, stroking his beard. He looked out into the ocean, quickly getting lost in thought.
"I can't believe we're going to be parents." His tone had an air of gratitude more than surprise. He honestly couldn't believe this was his life. He had found someone who was his equal, his best friend, and now he was going to be a father, something he had been dreaming of for the longest time.
"I know, do you think we're ready?", you scrunch your nose at him, making him laugh. You were feeling the same doubt that every parent feels when they bring a life into this world.
He felt his stomach flutter as he looked at you, beautiful as ever; his heart truly lived outside of his body in you. "As ready as we'll ever be, baby girl." You placed your hand over his, stroking his knuckles. "I've never been more excited", you whispered, your cheeks flushing pink.
Travis cleared his throat, feeling his emotions start to build up in his chest at your words. "Why don't you cool off in the pool with me?" Travis stood, extending a hand out to you. You shook your head, taking a sip of your water. The fact that you managed to get comfortable in a chair at eight months pregnant was a miracle in itself. "No, I'm perfectly comfortable here."
"C'mon, for me, please?" He gave his best puppy dog eyes and you immediately caved, allowing him to help you stand and walk with you over to the edge of the pool. You slowly made your way down the steps, the water comfortably warm, Travis' hand in yours the entire time.
"I've gotcha, just relax", Travis whispered as you reached the middle of the pool. You leaned back, resting your head on Travis' shoulder as he held you up so you could begin to float, gliding you across the water. You felt weightless, your limbs suspended, your back feeling relief for the first time in weeks.
****
Once your fingers were sufficiently wrinkled, and you felt exhaustion start to set in, you and Travis headed inside to get ready for dinner. You both took time to shower, rest and get dressed before heading down to the beach. You opted for a linen maxi dress with a cutout in the front to highlight your bump and to help keep you cool, while Travis wore a poplin white shirt that showed off his chest hair that you found undeniably sexy.
It was a short ride to the beach by taxi, as you made your way down the mountain where your villa was perched. Travis held your hand, squeezing each individual finger, something he did when he was nervous. He was tight lipped about his plans for tonight, and you had been trying to pry information out of him all day.
"I'm honestly surprised you were able to keep a secret from me this long" You said in jest, narrowing your eyes at Travis as he helped you out of the taxi. He saw your eyes roam up and down his body, landing on his exposed chest. "I know", he admitted, "but I think it'll be worth the wait."
Your eyes grew wide as you saw the dinner that Travis had arranged for the two of you. The setting sun provided a perfect background of pink and orange haze for the beautiful table sat right on the edge of the beach.
Rows of lanterns led you down to the water and to the table that was already set with candles and your favorite flowers. The waves gently crashed against the sand, and you could feel the ocean water on your toes each time the tide came in.
"Wow, I don't even know what to say." You turned to Travis, tears brimming in your eyes. He cradled your face in his hands, wiping away the wetness that collected under your eyes. "It's beautiful, Trav, I love it."
"This just scratches the surface of what I think you deserve for being such an amazing wife. You make everything you touch better, and you are such a kind, loving person, I feel so lucky to have you in my life. I can't wait to see you thrive as a mother, and I'll be right by your side the entire time" He pulled you in close for a gentle kiss, his lips lingering on yours. You didn't try to hold back your tears, letting them flow freely as he held you.
"Sorry, pregnancy hormones", you wiped your tears as you sat down at the table across from Travis. One of the annoying symptoms of pregnancy were your unpredictable hormones, which often came with crying spells that could be set off at a moment's notice. You were overwhelmed by your husband's grand gesture and couldn't stop crying.
"I'm really sorry, I don't know what's wrong with me", you wiped your nose, apologizing to Travis, who had watched you cry for the last five minutes. "Its okay, baby", he replied, sympathetically, taking your hand.
"Ok, I think I'm done." You took a couple deep breaths, giving Travis the best smile you could muster.
"Did I tell you how beautiful you look tonight?" Travis asked, trying to change the subject. He winced as you started to sob again. "Baby, what's wrong?"
"You're just being so sweet, I love you so much", you babbled in between sniffs.
****
Dinner was nothing short of perfect. Travis had chosen a tasting menu of traditional Spanish dishes, each one better than the previous. You spent the night talking and enjoying each other's company, ending the night slow dancing on the sand.
"This was amazing, babe", you declared. Travis watched you walk around the room as he laid in bed, an arm propped under his head. "Once I stopped crying, I really enjoyed myself", you giggled, slipping off your sandals.
"C'mere, my emotional baby." He patted the bed next to him. You crawled onto the mattress, sinking down next to him, his hand instinctively starting to rub your belly. He closed his eyes, resting his head against yours. There was a long moment of silence before you spoke again, your anxieties weighing on you.
"Do you think I can do this?" He opened his eyes to your words, turning to look at you. "What do you mean?"
You sat up in the bed, worry settling on your face. "I mean this whole being a mom thing. Do you really think I can do this?"
Travis smiled as he grabbed your hand, planting kisses on your knuckles. "I've never been more sure of anything in my entire life." You felt those tears start to come back, not from sadness, but pure relief that Travis was walking through this next phase of life with you.
"I've got something to show you." He got off the bed and walked over to his suitcase, pulling out a small box.
"I was going to save it for after the baby was here, but I think you could use this right now." He handed you the box, sitting on the edge of the bed. Inside, was a beautiful, delicate diamond ring.
"It has our birthstones, and then a diamond in the middle to represent Bubs." You gasped, a single tear running down your cheek.
I know that this time has been overwhelming for both of us, and I'm never going anywhere, but when we're apart or when things get hard, this is a reminder that you have a family that loves and wouldn't exist without you." Travis slipped the ring on your finger; it nestled perfectly with your engagement ring and wedding band.
Your heart swelled with emotions as you looked at Travis. "I'm speechless, for the second time tonight." Travis chuckled pulling you to lay down next to him again. "Remember you said you thought I was dreaming this morning?"
"Yeah", you nodded, resting your chin on his chest as you rubbed his jawline.
"Well I was. I was dreaming about you and I, and our little family. We were so happy, and for the first time since you gave me that pregnancy test eight months ago, I felt at complete peace. That's what I feel right now, here with you. I don't have a doubt in my mind that we can do this and be the best parents we can be.
"I'm sure that will change once he gets here and I realize I have no idea what I'm doing," Travis laughed, his body shaking underneath you, "but that is what you bring me, baby, complete peace."
"There is no one in the world I'd want to go through life with but you, Travis." You lifted your head to meet his lips, tears hitting his face as he deepened the kiss, pulling you into his body, careful of your belly.

Hey! I’m hoping you might have a suggestion for fabrics; I’m looking for a thick cotton to make a petticoat style skirt (like those oldschool ones made of cotton with pintucks and insertion lace). I want it thick enough that the white skirt isn’t see through and it stays stiff enough to provide volume if I use it as an underskirt, but not so thick/rough it’s uncomfortable or that I can’t gather it to be frilly. There’s so many words out there- duck? Broadcloth? Canvas? Twill? I’m not sure how to describe what I’m looking for in a Google search. All I know is I definitely don’t want quilting cotton. ‘Burberry’ (which I see a lot of brands use) just turns up plaids a la the high fashion brand. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you so much!
Anyone who is interested in burbery in the lolita context should talk to @babelglyph aka burberryglyph. The short version is that burbery is a lightweight cotton twill used in a lot of old school pieces, and B.Glyph knows where to get it, as well as can provide info about why they know that the fabric they recommend is true burbery twill, as well as why it's called burbery. I remember that they know all of this but can't remember the actual answer to any of it.
As for other fabrics you mentioned: All duck is canvas but not all canvas is duck. Duck is a plain weave and other canvasses can be a twill weave of some kind. Either way, the heavier yarn and overall thick construction is what makes canvas canvas. Fun fact, "duck tape" predated the term "duct tape" and referred to tape made of duck canvas. Broadcloth is usually interchangeably with quilt cotton, though "quilt cotton" is generally a more specific term. Broadcloth can be pretty much any fiber but quilt cotton is expected to be cotton. Some people think that broadcloth has to be a single color. Twill is a weave structure, so the words that predate it are important. "stretch twill" is going to be different from "suiting twill" or "heavyweight wool twill." If you want to see a twill weave structure, generally the most accessible example of a twill structure is denim. Look at some blue jeans and you can see how there's that slanting pattern caused by the blue threads passing over 2-3 white threads before going under a white thread? That's a twill weave structure. (You then have to have it be cotton and have the two color setup to be proper denim. Technically black jeans aren't denim, they're just twill, but no one wants to get into that fight with me.)
If you're looking for cotton fabrics that aren't quilt cotton, but tend to be in that sort of lighter weight area, I'd look for:
Cotton sateen: This is cotton fibers woven in a satin weave. This has a really subtle luster and will drape better than quilt cotton,
or
Cotton poplin: poplin has what's called an unbalanced plain weave, so the threads are woven in the same pattern as quilting cotton, but where in quilting cotton they are the same thickness vertically and horizontally, they're different thicknesses vertical vs horizontal in poplin. This means that it hangs better, and also that it has a different drape depending on if you're using lengthwise grain or crosswise grain. Poplin is used for shirting a lot.
If you need to get thicker, you will probably want to look for lightweight twill. I'm trying to not get too into textile science, which is hard because i LOVE textile science. So stick with me for a second:
The "higher quality" a fabric generally feels, in quotes there because quality is subjective, but through history we have associated finely spun yarns with a higher quality. Thinner yarns are harder to make, and you need to use more of them to make the same size fabric as you'd make with thicker yarn. Thinner yarn has to be structurally better constructed to take the force of being woven into fabric, versus a thicker yarn. So, when we want something that feels like quality, we look for fabrics spun with a thinner yarn. This is why expensive sheets are measured in thread count: more threads per inch is a better quality sheet.
However, the problem comes when you want a thicker fabric made of thinner yarns. If you've ever had a potholder loom, you understand a plain weave: a yarn goes over one yarn, under the next, over the next, and so on. Thinner threads in a plain weave will make a thinner fabric.
However, if you start using other weave patterns, you start changing fabric properties. In a twill weave, a thread will go over two or more other threads before going under another thread. One of the side effects of this is that it's possible to fit more threads into the same space than you could fit in a plain weave, meaning that you can make a thicker fabric with thinner yarns going into the construction process.
And this means that, if you're judging a fabric thickness by weight, like you know how many ounces a yard of fabric is, a twill fabric will be made of finer yarns than a canvas fabric of the same weight.
In addition to being "higher quality", we like thinner yarns in garment construction because they're more flexible, so they make the fabric hang more like a garment and less like a canvas sack.
As a final note, when you say "provide volume as an underskirt", a twill skirt with pintucks and insertion will have some volume, but if you're doing a lolita fashion look, you'll also need petticoats under that. Some fashion styles, that added volume will be enough, but in lolita fashion, if you can get the hem of your skirt to be 10" away from your legs in all direction, you're probably approaching the correct level of poof.
(But for what it's worth, if you're trying to add some more volume on a cotton underskirt that's not for lolita fashion, pintucks will make the same skirt have more volume. Creating that rigid-ish line that goes in the direction opposite of what the skirt would naturally want to fold, especially if you make several of those lines in a close spacing, will hold the skirt out and make it have more lift. Just a fun fact there. If you want to get as much volume as possible out of this, you will want to use many small pintucks, as well as the stiffest insertion that you can find. Skirts want to be small and make lots of soft vertical folds, so applying horizontal decoration that makes that folding harder to do will add volume).
I don't know how much of that was answering the ask and how much was just Pink Loves Textile Science 2023(tm)

I mentioned the other day that I recently finished my first large (-ish) sewing project: a mid-19th-century-style shirt! Here it is, if you'll pardon the atrocious lighting:
Tumblr media
Hardly flawless but I'm proud of it--the entire shirt is sewed by hand. I used The Workwoman's Guide (1840) as a, well, guide. My two main deviations are that I opted to simply pleat the parts of the shirt that would normally be gathered, like the sleeve-to-body joinings, and I opted not to include the shoulder-straps because I made some kind of rounding error in the nails-to-inches conversions, and as a result cut them too small (though I might add some later.)
Anyway, even though I put off finishing it for a long time (the first stitches were in September), I really enjoyed it and I'm going to try making some more--I already have some more shirting fabrics on order, a heavy striped linen and a light striped cotton poplin. At some point I will get a nice pristine white fabric for a more formal shirt with a pleated bosom. I might also try my hand soon at a more complex project that would involve cutting out shapes other than rectangles, but I'm taking baby steps for now.

Prince Harry’s Dior Shirt Is a Perfect Example of His New Laid-Back California-Inspired Style
Prince Harry stepped out in London wearing one of Meghan Markle's favorite brands.

Prince Harry Attends High Court Hearing In Privacy Lawsuit - Day Four
Belinda Jiao/Getty Images
It’s a big week for celebrity court fashion! While Gwyneth Paltrow dominates the conversation around her skiing trial with a series of runway-worth “stealth wealth” looks, Prince Harry is across the pond rocking some subtly high-end duds of his own to another set of legal proceedings. Harry is currently visiting the UK for a hearing on his lawsuit against Associated Newspapers for illegal information gathering, and while he’s been modeling similar variations of the same sleek, low-key suits all week, his particular choice of shirt on Thursday, March 30, caught followers’ eyes.
Photos from Harry leaving the High Court in London show the former royal’s jacket blown open enough that you can see a bee logo on his white collared shirt, identifying it as Dior. The Dior bee shirt is a cotton poplin dress shirt with a bee embroidered in 18-carat gold thread, finished with mother-of-pearl Dior signature buttons and a shirt-tail hem, available on the Dior website for $1,000. It’s also a perfect symbol of Harry’s new laid-back approach to fashion since moving to California.
During his time in the royal family, Harry had to abide by strict rules around style (though not as strict as those applied to Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton). His suits would reflect the formality of the occasion he was attending and little else, and Harry always looked like someone who was more comfortable in clothes he could wear on the polo field or out camping. Harry spoke fondly in his memoir Spare about shopping the bargain aisles at discount chain TJ Maxx as he grew up: “when they’d be flush with items from Gap or J.Crew, items that had just gone out of season or were slightly damaged.”
Tumblr media

LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 30: Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex attends the Royal Courts of Justice as the lawsuit against the Associated Newspapers enters its final day on March 30, 2023 in London, England. Since he started dating and then married Meghan Markle in 2018, royal followers noticed immediately that his style was becoming sharper, borrowing more frequently from high-end designers and often matching her impeccable looks in color palette. As he and Meghan went on to exit the royal family in 2020, Harry’s style evolution has continued: The suits are fitting better every year, and he’s learning how to meld his love of comfortable clothes with a more grown-up look.
Harry has worn a series of suits and white collared shirts in demure blues and grays for his court appearances this week, but little touches like Monday’s skinny blue tie or Thursday’s Dior shirt point to the Prince breaking away from years of doing the bare minimum to dress appropriately and turning towards a genuine enjoyment in choosing his style, dressing in pieces that subtly scream quality while accomplishing the same polished and polite look that’s appropriate for these proceedings.
Call it the L.A. effect, call it the Meghan Markle effect, call it whatever you like—Prince Harry is looking good these days, and he knows it.
