Goose's impact on the MCU (or how much was changed by one blue cube that was hacked up like a furball by a Flerken)
Does anyone think about what would have happened differently or just not happened at all if Goose hadn't hacked up the Tesseract like a furball? Well, I do. And these are my conclusions.
Most of Phase 1, which means Iron Man 1 & 2, Hulk and Thor 1 + Captain America; The First Avenger, would have been the same, but the post credits of Thor 1 wouldn't have happened at all, and the post credits of CA;TFA wouldn't have happened the same, because said post credits scene was basically an ad for Avengers 1, which leads me to...
S.H.I.E.L.D wouldn't have been experimenting on the Tesseract because they wouldn't technically have it. So no portal, which means no Loki, which means no Mind Stone/Chitauri Sceptre, which means Barton and Selveig wouldn't have been enslaved, which means the Avengers wouldn't have banded together, and there would be no Battle of New York. Basically, the entire film wouldn't have happened.
Iron Man 3 would have been pretty much the same, minus Tony's PTSD from throwing a nuke into the portal. Thor; The Dark World... well, Jane probably would have still been on that date and wound up with the Aether/Reality Stone inside of her, can't see how that might change. Whether that's something that could have been solved without Loki (since he'd still be missing, because Thor wouldn't have taken him back to Asgard because Avengers 1 didn't happen), is up for debate, but the Dark Elves would still be an issue. I can't see how they could be defeated, but for the sake of argument, let's say they're vanquished. Captain America; The Winter Soldier... I can't see it happening the same, because I can't think of how Natasha and Steve met without Avengers 1 happening. Guardians of the Galaxy... that'd probably be exactly the same, as well as Ant-Man.
Age of Ultron. Well, no Sceptre and no CA;TWS (the latter is just for the sake of argument, okay?) means no raids on Hydra bases to find the Sceptre, and no Sceptre means no Mind Stone which means Wanda would be an ordinary witch (according to WandaVision) and Pietro wouldn't have super speed. Also, they wouldn't have been experimented on with the Mind Stone, so they likely wouldn't be at the base anyway. And if they, the Sceptre and the Avengers weren't at the base, then Tony probably wouldn't have had that waking nightmare/trance thing (thank you, Wanda Maximoff) which would lead to him coming up with the terrible idea to 'build a suit of armour around the world', which means no Ultron. That and the lack of the Mind Stone means no Vision. And Sokovia wouldn't have been destroyed, which leads to...
No Sokovia Accords, which means the chain of events leading to the death of T'Chaka didn't happen, which means T'Challa doesn't become Black Panther. I'm not saying Killmonger doesn't show up, but T'Challa probably wouldn't be having to deal with it entirely on his own. Away from Wakandan politics, Civil War wouldn't have happened because a) no Avengers in the first place and b) no Accords for them to fight at a German airport about. Which means Ant-Man and the Wasp wouldn't have happened the same because Scott wouldn't have taken Hank's suit to Germany to be arrested in, which means he wouldn't be limited to his home by the law. Ava Starr probably would still be out there, but she'd likely be dealt with differently. Janet might have still been rescued from the Quantum Realm, but I'm not sure. Thor; Ragnarok wouldn't have happened because Thor wouldn't have had that vision in AoU, which meant he wouldn't be scouring the 9 Realms for other Infinity Stones. Also, Loki wouldn't have been there to cast that spell on Odin, so he might have lived a bit longer and decided to give Thor a heads-up about Hela. I stress the word 'might' here because he's a terrible father. Also, Dr. Strange and GotG Vol. 2 would have probably happened the same. I mean, I can't see why they wouldn't.
Due to Ragnarok not happening, the Asgardians wouldn't have been an endangered species of refugees when Thanos found them, assuming he even comes after them at all in this altered reality. Because without the Tesseract and Loki, why should he care about Asgardians, unless they were dumb enough to keep the Reality Stone on Asgard in this timeline? Not that likely. So, yeah. The attacks on Earth by the Black Order to try and get the Time Stone... might have still happened, but probably not in the same way, I'd imagine. Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian would probably still have attacked the New York Sanctum Sanctorum (or the streets near it, whichever), but they might have been joined by the other two, since Proxima and Corvus wouldn't be seeking the Mind Stone in... wherever it was Wanda and Vision were hiding (I think it was Edinburgh, but I probably heard wrong). Which means they might have gotten to the Time Stone early, even with Tony and Peter helping Strange (oh, forgot to mention it earlier, but Spiderman; Homecoming probably wouldn't have been exactly the same, since the fight in the airport didn't happen, so Tony wouldn't have had that reason to seek out Peter, so probably wouldn't have given him the upgraded suit or taken it away). The Guardians of the Galaxy wouldn't have recieved Thor's distress signal, so wouldn't have been roped into this whole mess as soon, if at all. Several other events wouldn't have happened, which would mean no battle in Wakanda. That combined with Goose presumably still having the Tesseract inside themself would mean no completed Infinity Gauntlet, which would mean no Snap. So no Endgame or Phase 4-5 either.
So this got long. Sorry for everyone having to read it, but this literally just occured to me because I was rewatching the Marvels trailer and thinking about Goose. So... yeah.

The Ghost Children - Part 13, From There to Here, Bucky Barnes One Shots
Summary: Five Avengers take on a mission in Northern Quebec at the request of the Canadian government then learn Zemo is connected to the location. What they find is completely unexpected.
Length: 6.4K
Characters: Bucky, Sam, Clint, Peter, Oeznik, Henry (a Canadian Inuit Ranger), Lt. D’Aoust (Canadian Special Ops)
Warnings: disappointment, irritation at Zemo’s connection, creep factor as team tries to learn what they’re dealing with, talk of prejudice against black people, anger at HYDRA and Nazis.
Author’s note: This came out of nowhere and started out with Bucky and Sam commiserating about being pulled away from their girlfriends. It becomes Bucky and Sam trying to do the right thing by helping some survivors of HYDRA’s experiments, who originally appear threatening. The survivors will be referred to in a later one shot.
<<Part12
❄️
Present day
Nothing was said for some time between me and Sam as he drove in the dark to the storage locker where I kept my weapons. Both of us were a little irritated about being texted for a mission right in the middle of a social occasion. I was mid kiss with my new girlfriend, June, after just asking if I could spend the night for the first time, while Sam was about to kiss her friend, Ingrid. When Sam cleared his throat, I finally spoke.
"I like her, a lot. She makes feel me good."
"I noticed," replied my partner. "June is a special lady. You've been sharing your file with her, haven't you?"
"Yeah, nothing about me should be a secret, not if she's ...."
My voice trailed off, but Sam knew what I was going to say. If she was the one, I wanted her to know everything about me. It was important that the people I cared about knew what really happened to me. Keeping things secret had kept me a prisoner for so long.
"Where are you at on your file?"
"Where I fell," I replied. "She read Steve's report." I looked sideways at Sam. "She had much the same reaction as you had. Said he abandoned me. I defended him but I'm beginning to understand why you weren't happy with his decision."
"After all he ... we went through to find you, keep you from being arrested, and get you help it just seemed like a quick decision on his part to leave just after you and I reappeared," said Sam. "Now mind you, I'm willing to accept that he had five years to come to that decision during the Blip, time we didn't have or were aware of. To him, it took a long time to realize he would happier back in the 1940s. To us, it was a matter of days."
I was almost about to tell him that Steve went back for more than one reason then decided against it. It obviously hadn't worked as I still went through all the shit I did, not able to get away from HYDRA until Steve and I fought at the Triskelion. There was a memory of a woman in Siberia telling me we had been betrayed and I had to kill her, on Zola's order. Would I tell Sam, or June, about that? Sighing, I put the thought out of my head. Not yet, perhaps not ever, but I would consider it later.
He pulled up to the gate of the storage units and inputted the code, then drove through the open gate to the storage locker. I unlocked it and lifted the gate, turning on the light. Entering the code on the footlocker where I kept my weapons, I chose several firearms and knives, plus the harnesses and sheaths I would need to hold them. Sam smirked at the care I took in my choices, but he knew I had my own preferences. Many of them were weapons I used for years as the Winter Soldier. As much I hated being that person, they were the only things I really kept from that time, liking the familiarity and ease with which the implements fit my needs. For all they put me through HYDRA did give me superior tools to work with. I pulled my spare working uniform out as well, the blue leather jacket with the removable sleeve, black singlet, the black tactical pants with pockets to store magazines, zip ties, and anything else I deemed necessary, with my black combat boots completing the "ensemble." Packing all of it in a large satchel I relocked the footlocker, turned off the light, secured the storage locker and put the bag in the back of Sam's truck.
It was only a short drive to the air base and Sam parked in the designated parking spot for his truck after clearing the check point. The quinjet hadn't arrived yet and we sat looking out through the windshield.
"You looked like you hit it off with June's friend, Ingrid," I noted. "She seems fun."
Sam smiled. "Not at all what I was expecting of a librarian and part time burlesque dancer. We'll see what happens, but she does interest me. We are going to the Christmas party, aren't we?"
"If we get back in time," I replied. "June wants to show me off." I was silent for a moment. "Did the Avengers ever have parties?"
"Oh yeah, Tony Stark was a real party animal," replied Sam. "Booze, beautiful women, food, he provided it all. After Ultron, though, it kind of came to a screeching halt. The Sokovian Accords were brought out after that. It split us apart."
"I thought I did that." Quietly I looked out the front windshield. It was something we hadn't really spoken of. "You did end up in the Raft because you helped me fight the others in Leipzig."
"No, there was tension before you were framed," said Sam. "Steve was ready to walk before because Stark was acting so high and mighty. In a way, it was understandable. He was feeling pretty guilty about what Ultron did to Sokovia. Some of us thought that it was his hubris that got us into that situation. But he and Steve were always butting heads over who was leading the team. When Tony tried to bully Steve, me and a few others into signing the Accords, it brought it all to a head. Then Tony wanted to arrest you and put you into the psych ward without an expiry date, and that just rubbed Steve the wrong way."
"He wanted me in an insane asylum indefinitely?" I asked, turning to face Sam. I wasn't surprised considering how those in law enforcement viewed me when I was the Winter Soldier. "How did the others feel about it?"
"Well, it was preferable to the CIA shooting to kill, and Zemo framed you pretty effectively, making it seem like you were up to your Winter Soldier activities. But Steve defended you and I respected his judgement, so I stood with him."
"Did you think I was still the Winter Soldier?" I didn't mean to stare, but I knew my eyes were boring into his.
"Honestly, I didn't know what to think," replied Sam. "You saved Steve's life after the Helicarrier fell. We checked satellite footage and saw you call for help on the emergency telephone, telling them where he was. Then when we realized you were looking out for him while he recuperated, Steve asked that we let you be. You didn't seem to be a threat to us, so we did. Then we lost track of you until Romania."
"You knew I was watching? I find that hard to believe."
"Why, because you're the god of stealth? It's kind of obvious when I come home the day after I picked up some groceries to find someone has been eating my food, has moved some of my personal possessions and has used my shower."
"You didn't know that," I scoffed.
"Damp towels," said Sam. "You even washed your clothes, because you used a different setting than I usually did. Found a tag that you ripped off of a new shirt but didn't put in the waste bin. I was observing you, too, even if it was after the fact. Tell me, did HYDRA actually come looking for Steve?"
For a moment I said nothing as I sat in the truck, maybe pouting a little bit that I hadn't been as successful at that surveillance as I thought I was. Then Sam sighed, still waiting for my answer.
"Yeah, they did," I replied finally. "I intercepted two different pairs of operatives who were trying to find out what room Steve was in. One pair even set up on a rooftop across from the hospital. I was on a higher rooftop and took them out." I smirked as Sam's eyes grew wide. "I didn't kill them. I was done with that. But I did take them down and dropped them off at a police station, identifying them as HYDRA. They were terrified of me; thought I was going to kill them outright. Told me everything they knew about who was still in play, which wasn't much."
"What happened with the second pair?" asked Sam.
"I led them on a merry chase," I replied, remembering them pursuing me in their car. "The first pair said after finishing Rogers I was a secondary target for reacquisition. They didn't know I was in control, thought I was hiding, waiting for the right time to provide my mission report. I wanted to know who was in charge after Rumlow; told them I could only give him a mission report."
"Did you find out?"
I nodded. "Oh yeah, an Air Force General. Took him hostage, took his phone,  I intended to get him to tell me the names of other high ranking HYDRA operatives."
"What happened?"
"The General started saying the activation words. I grabbed him by the throat to shut him up. Grabbed too hard." There was still regret about that. "I killed him. It wasn't my intent, but I couldn't let him have control of me or they would have sent me to finish Steve off, and you, since you were there in his room most of the time. I made amends to his family. Never told them he was number three in HYDRA. They had no idea."
We could see the quinjet approaching in the distance and both of us got out, removing our go bags from the back seat. I took Sam's go bag while he lifted his suit travelling case from the back. Within seconds the quinjet was landing in front of us with Clint at the controls. The ramp was lowered, and we saw Maria Hill and Peter Parker strapped in as we boarded. After stowing our bags and the case Sam strapped in while I approached Clint.
"You need a co-pilot?"
"No, we're not going far," replied the archer. "One more pickup. Thanks though."
Dropping into the seat next to Sam I strapped in and sat back as Clint took the aircraft up. We flew for about half an hour landing next to a rural property. Clint looked back at Maria, and she unstrapped herself from her seat then headed for the ramp.
"Stay here," she said to us.
"What happened to the second pair?" asked Sam.
For a moment I looked at him blankly then I remembered our previous conversation. "The General had called them; told them I was at his hotel, so I waited for them to show up. Then I led them on a pursuit before letting them catch me and I faced off against them. When they saw the General was dead, they thought they were next and begged me not to hurt them. I told them you and Steve were under my protection and if I saw them anywhere near you, I would kill them, slowly. They believed me. I suggested they head to Mexico, find some safe work with a cartel. They didn't notice I had the General's cell phone. As they left, I took a picture of their car's license plate and made an anonymous tip they were smuggling cash to a Mexican cartel, and that they killed the General, then ditched the phone. They admitted to me that they broke into a HYDRA safe house and cleared out the money from the safe, so they had a few hundred thousand on them."
Sam smirked then almost choked when Maria walked back on the quinjet with Oeznik.
"What the hell," he said. "Why is he here?"
"Mr. Wilson, Mr. Barnes," said the old man. "It's a pleasure to see you again. The Baron suggested I offer my services to the Avengers for this mission. I will let Miss Hill begin."
With a nod to Clint to start the final leg of their trip Maria strapped into her seat while Oeznik sat in a seat and did the same. We glared at both her and Oeznik, while Peter just looked from one person to another wondering what was going on.
"It's an open secret that Baron Zemo has managed to maintain his network of contacts while incarcerated in the Raft," began Maria. "About three days ago one of them informed him of a discovery located in a nickel mine in the Ungava Peninsula of northern Quebec. I believe the Baron has an investment in that particular mine." Oeznik nodded his head sagely. "Shortly after that time a request for assistance was forwarded by the company listed as the majority mine owners to the Canadian federal government. Oeznik?"
"Thank you, Miss Hill," he wheezed. "The Baron originally bought shares in the mine for the ore it brought out of the ground. With his investment being considerable he did a lot of research on the area and eventually found a rumour of a connection between the mine and an early HYDRA research facility started in the 1930s. Nothing was ever confirmed until he received word from his onsite contact that an underground chamber was located, filled with cryogenic capsules. He ordered the contact not to touch the capsules, but it appears a curious employee may have done just that."
"What did they unleash?" asked Sam.
Oeznik shrugged. "The mine was on shutdown with only a skeleton crew for the Christmas break," he replied. "Since the request to the government for assistance there has been no contact of any kind."
"The Canadian government requested our intervention on this, considering Bucky's background and your recent experience with the Flag Smashers," said Maria, "but with the temperatures in the area approaching -40 degrees Fahrenheit the quinjet will be unable to withstand the environment. We are en route to Canadian Forces Base Bagotville in Quebec where we will be outfitted with winter clothing, and transported on a Hercules aircraft along with a select group of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment, who will act in support of you four. We will rendezvous with a Canadian Ranger unit who will provide transportation to the mine. Oeznik and I will stay at the airstrip, monitoring the operation."
She looked pointedly at me, Sam, and Peter, who gulped nervously. Clint obviously already knew as he never turned his head away from his piloting duties.
"You want me to send Red Wing in there first to find out what we're up against?" asked Sam. "Then what?"
She and Oeznik looked at each other. "Contain, disable, and reinsert into cryostasis if you find what we all suspect you will find," said Maria. "If that isn't possible Clint will institute an Omega Protocol." She looked directly at me. "We would never ask you to do that. Clint volunteered to take that responsibility if it comes to that."
I could feel my jaw clamping hard as I was bothered, fuck, even angry. They were expecting to find Winter Soldiers, people who possibly were transformed against their will like me. Before answering I breathed deeply several times then swallowed my anger down and looked at Maria.
"If Peter and I succeed in containing them and getting them back into cryostasis, what then?" I asked.
"Wakanda has already offered to begin the deprogramming process," she replied. "So much was learned when they treated you that they feel they can offer them a good chance of reintegration into society but until we actually see them and interact with them ...."
Peter looked at me, obviously nervous about coming face to face with who knew how many transformed individuals? But Peter was stronger than me and with his webs could humanely contain them.
"Alright but I will do everything I can to keep them alive," I stated emphatically. "I want your promise that the Omega Protocol will only be taken if there is no other choice."
"You have my promise," said Clint, from the cockpit, as he put the aircraft on autopilot. "I don't want to be responsible for their deaths but if it appears they will break out of that facility then I will accept that burden."
Oeznik brought up all the information on the onboard computer which the team crowded around. Sam and I had to give Oeznik and Zemo credit. Their information was thorough. The original owners of the mine were among some of Nazi Germany's top industrialists. The mine was sold during World War II, when the Canadian government passed laws restricting hostile foreign ownership of natural resources. The new owners who bought it at that time complained that it appeared certain portions of the mine appeared to have been deliberately sealed off in such a way that exploration of them was too dangerous. As a result, the mining operations shut down for some time then restarted after the war, but in new directions, with multiple various owners, until two years previously with the discovery that the shafts created since that time had extended beyond the areas that were sealed off.
"When did Zemo acquire a financial interest in the mine?" I asked Oeznik.
"Two years ago," replied the old man. "It was at the same time that access to the sealed off areas was improved. It was no coincidence as he had his suspicions, even though his purchase of shares was legitimately for the minerals in the mine."
"He suspected there was something from HYDRA left behind, didn't he?" asked Sam.
"Yes, but he believed it to be an information storage area only, until his contact mentioned the capsules then communications were lost," said Oeznik. "Immediately he authorized me to share all of his knowledge of the mine."
Until we got there and sent Red Wing into the mine, we weren't sure what we were going to find. A couple of hours later we landed in Quebec. Over the next two days there we were outfitted in cold weather gear, then boarded a Hercules transport, along with six members of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment for the three-hour flight to the air strip nearest the mine. When we arrived at the airstrip there were several Rangers, mostly Inuit members of the local population who acted as eyes and ears on the ground protecting Canadian sovereignty in those remote areas. They waited with several snow cat vehicles to transport us to the mine. The CSOR soldiers had dealt with the Rangers before and advised us to trust their knowledge of the environment. The Rangers were the experts who would make sure we all stayed safe in the harsh conditions. After confirming our comms all worked, we dressed for the weather and headed out towards the mine, spread between several vehicles.
After we arrived, Sam sent both Red Wing units ahead of us to determine where the mine employees were. So far as we knew there were about 10 people on site, as the mine was on shutdown for the Christmas break. We waited in the vehicle as Sam monitored the images coming from the drones while they flew through the accommodations portion of the camp, peeking in windows, using their features to look inside the buildings, searching for people. From there the drones were sent to the mine buildings themselves. After twenty minutes of flying through the structures it was determined there was no one above ground in any of the buildings around the mine. Sam brought the Red Wing units back and we decided to relocate to a communal space in the accommodations structure.
The CSOR soldiers exited first, their weapons at the ready and took point on gaining entry into the building, pronouncing it clear. Inside the structure communications were set up with Hill and Oeznik still back at the air strip.
"There is no sign of anyone in any of the above ground structures of the mine," said Sam over the radio. "I can send the Red Wing units down into the shaft but there are three separate shafts, according to the images we received inside the processing structure. Oeznik, do you happen to know which shaft contained the capsules?"
"The one opened first," he replied. "Identified as A shaft. It is the oldest and most extensive of the three."
"Send your Red Wings in there, Sam," said Maria. "I would suggest you do reconnaissance in silent mode. Don't want to tip them off that we have a contingent on the surface."
"Roger that," he answered. "I can make it possible you get the transmission as well."
With a little sigh Sam directed his Red Wing units to switch to silent mode and sent them down the A shaft of the mine. We all gathered around the computer monitors that Sam was able to connect to. He was also recording the transmissions so that if we had to, we could go back and review anything that looked suspect. As the drones lowered themselves into the shaft it looked normal, just another mining shaft. Then they came to a section where the lights had been extinguished and Sam switched to infra-red mode. Still nothing looked out of place until they got to the bottom of the shaft where the lights were on again. There were two directions, but Oeznik didn't know which direction the capsules were found so Sam split the Red Wings up into their different components. Slowly they moved in both directions. Nothing seemed out of place until one of the Rangers noted something.
"Go back," he said. "Something moved. Something is in the shadows."
Sam sent one of the drones back to where the Ranger noted the movement and he switched to infra-red, showing the outline of a small person, a very small person. They were breathing but their breath was barely registering on the infra-red. Suddenly, whoever it was leaped out, grabbed the Red Wing and seemingly crushed it, stopping the transmission and making Sam groan in frustration. Quickly he brought up the slow motion replay of that moment and what we saw coming out of the shadows had us all floored. It was a child, a small child of maybe 4 or 5 years old.
"Jesus Christ," said the CSOR commander, a Lieutenant D'Aoust. "That was a kid. What's a kid doing in the mine?"
"Sam, get Red Wing out of there," I said, suddenly having a bad feeling. "They're compromised. Bring them all back."
Just at that moment two more components met similar fates and Sam sent the signal to return to base. While they returned, we looked closely at all the footage that had been recorded and the Rangers were able to pick out more movement in the shadows. There were at least four other children that were identified. All of them appeared to be wearing hospital type gowns, were barefoot, and all had long blond hair. We couldn't tell if they were boys or girls. But they were all definitely young. Concerned about the possibility of these children, who were likely quite feral, from coming up the shaft Maria sent the order to evacuate the building and return to the air strip. That was the plan but that isn't what happened.
While we were preparing to leave several of the Rangers had taken up positions at the windows keeping watch outside. Just as we were ready to exit the building and board the snow cats two of the Rangers called from their spots.
"We have movement outside," said the one and confirmed by the other.
Turning out the lights I joined them while the CSOR squad took up positions at the other windows. The Ranger closest to me, Henry Inaluk, nudged me.
"There are two of them, just beyond the last snow cat on the left," he said. "They don't seem to be bothered by the cold."
I looked where he was pointing and sure enough, they were there but had blended into the different shadows given by the low setting sun and buildings. Their stealth skills were incredible, and it got me thinking of something that was only hinted at when I was the Winter Soldier. It was something I wasn't privy to except for the big mouth of a braggart HYDRA operative who had also been in the SS. I got on my comms.
"Maria, any chance you can access the online HYDRA and Nazi Germany files, and look for information on Geisterkinder from the Lebensborn program?" I asked. "It was a very hush hush HYDRA operation using children born to pureblood Aryans in the SS, to turn them into operatives from birth."
"You're not kidding, are you?" she responded, her disgust at the notion coming through even on the comms.
"No, I only recall whispers of it but these kids, they have skills," I replied. "Probably better than mine. They're likely feral and very dangerous. They've got us trapped inside. I need information on trigger words, failsafe words, anything I can use to communicate with them to convince them that I am their handler."
"On it," she said.
We waited and watched as five more were identified in other spots. The two that were still camouflaged in the shadows hadn't moved. I looked at Henry, who seemed to know exactly where they were.
"You can see them?" I asked.
"Not exactly," he replied. "They blend in very well but they're different enough from the snow that I can tell they don't belong there. They're not natural. It's not the first time we've heard of them." He looked at me as if he was terrified. "Qaulluqtuq meeqqat is the closest Inuktitut term to them, "white child" in English but you could call them ghost children. There were stories of them before the Second World War, coming out of this mine while it was first being developed, searching for their parents, taking an adult from their bed and we would never see them again."
"You said the stories were from before World War II," I noted. "What happened then?"
"The stories stopped," he said, still not taking his eyes off the two that were watching us. "So did the disappearances."
"Bucky," said a voice beside me and I looked down at Peter, who was watching with us. "I could go out there and try to capture one of them with my web, bring it back here."
"How do your webs work in low temperatures?" I asked.
He blew some air out of his mouth and tilted his head as if he was thinking. "I can adjust the settings on my web shooters to compensate," he replied. "I just don't know how durable they are when they are chilled."
"Let's wait," I said. "You and I are probably the only two strong enough and quick enough to deal with them one on one. There are seven out there that we know of, and I wouldn't want to risk you being captured by them."
"Bucky?" Maria's voice was in my ear. "We found something. It's not much. Seven children, orphans who were part of the Lebensborn. They were "given" to HYDRA to explore raising them from childhood like Hitler Youth, while injecting them with the serum to give them powers. It didn't go quite how they expected, and they were supposed to be eliminated as they were considered too dangerous. Obviously, someone thought they could do something with them and took them. We're trying to find out more about the original owners of the mine, which wasn't a mine when it was first built."
"What was it?" I asked.
"Not sure," she replied. "There are definitely gaps in the record which makes me believe they wanted to hide these kids permanently, possibly because they couldn't deal with them. It's unclear if they were dangerous only to HYDRA or dangerous to everyone."
"They're moving!" called out Henry, who gestured to the darkening landscape.
The sun had just set and the children were approaching the building. Even I could see them.  Suddenly I felt very exposed and made a quick decision.
"Everyone into the common room," I ordered. "Away from the windows and doors. Peter, can you web up the vent covers and ceiling panels to keep them from being moved? We don't want these kids to get in here."
He began covering the ceiling in the central common room with his webs, adjusting the composition so they were almost unbreakable. The rest of us congregated there, all with weapons drawn and on high alert. We could hear scuttling sounds in the vents and efforts being made to come through the now sealed openings into the room. Listening carefully, I became aware of whispered conversations between the children, in German. The more they spoke the more I realized they were as frightened of us as we were of them. In fact, they saw us as Butzemann, or Bogeyman, and more specifically they referred to Sam as der schwarze Mann, or the Black Man, another type of Bogeyman.
"Henry, the stories of adults being taken before World War II, were they white or were they Inuit?" I asked.
"White," he replied. "The priests, or ministers, RCMP, some teachers."
"Maria, I think I know enough to try something," I said. "They speak German and they're terrified of us like we're Bogeymen. The skeleton crew, were they white or Inuit?"
"Mixture," she said. "You think they took the crew because they were scared and they wanted comfort?"
"That's my theory," I replied. "They seem to be impervious to the cold and I wonder if that's part of the abilities they may have received from the serum. Not that it matters because maturity wise, they're little kids, scared little kids who just want the Bogeyman to go away."
"Uh, Buck," said Clint, getting my attention. "We have a visitor."
I turned to where he was pointing and saw one of the children standing in the doorway to the kitchen area. Several other children appeared behind him / her, obviously coming through a vent in that room. Shifting so that I was positioning myself in front of the group I laid my weapons down and knelt, so I wasn't as threatening. Surprisingly, the others did the same, following my lead.
"Why aren't you in bed?" I asked in German. "It's bedtime for good children."
The first child took a step towards me. "We're hungry," she said. It was a girl by the sound of her voice. "They put us to bed without dinner then when we woke up the teachers were gone. It was all strangers here."
"Where are the strangers?" I wanted to find out if they were still alive.
"In the locked room," she replied. "They won't come out even though we're hungry."
"What's your name?" I asked. "I'm Jakob."
"Irene. Can you make us food?"
I stood up and stepped closer to her, offering her my hand. Shyly, she put her hand in mine and I turned back to the others.
"She's hungry and wants food," I said. "It appears they were put to bed without any dinner and when they woke up the teachers were all gone. She says the others are in the locked room and won't come out."
"Buck," said Clint. "What are you going to do?"
"Give them food," I replied. "If they're super soldiers who have been asleep since World War II they're starving. Securing food would be a primary need. Her hand is cold and I'm hoping once they get food in them, they'll warm up, hopefully in more ways than one."
Leading her back into the kitchen I told her and the others who were all in there to sit while I made them something to eat. Fortunately, the pantry and walk-in cooler in the kitchen were full of food. I pulled out eggs, milk, and flour.
"Want help?" asked Henry, from the Rangers, appearing in the doorway. "Scrambled eggs would be the easiest, but pancakes would do in a pinch and satisfy their sweet tooth, if they are anything like my kids. Bacon would go over well."
"Sure, why don't you scramble up some eggs and fry some bacon while I make pancakes," I replied. "No sudden moves. They're still a bit wary of us."
While we made food for the children Lieutenant D'Aoust and his soldiers went down into the mine, looking for the locked room, speculating it was a central place for miners to go in case of an emergency. Sure enough they found the ten mine employees there, almost at the end of their rations. As they debriefed the employees on what happened Sam and Peter came into the kitchen to see if they could help. The kids were afraid of Sam at first which bothered him, but I explained that he was probably the first black man they had ever seen and as children born into Nazi Germany, they had probably been inundated with propaganda describing black people as evil.
"Well, we can't have that, can we?" said Sam. "I have an idea. Peter, could you help me find out what kind of movies they have here? I think they need to watch some Disney."
"They're probably bored," noted Henry, as he began dishing out the scrambled eggs onto a serving dish. He drained the bacon strips on paper towels then put the strips on a platter. "We were doing a Christmas toy drive in Kangiqsujuaq, about an hour's flight from here. We could get some toys and clothes flown out for them."
I relayed that information to Maria who said she would see what she could do. Finally, Henry and I had enough food to feed a small army and we took the trays of food out to the common area where one of the other Rangers had set a table for the kids. They followed Henry and me out of the kitchen, sitting themselves expectantly at the table. While I dished out the food Henry went back for milk and glasses, pouring out a full glass for each child. They waited for permission to eat, undoubtedly it had been programmed into them by their HYDRA teachers.
"Go ahead, children, eat," I said.
They were ravenous, eating everything put in front of them. Like I speculated, once they got food into their systems their skin colour changed, becoming normal in appearance. So did their behaviour as they became more talkative and began acting like the small children they were. Irene, who seemed to be the oldest at about 6 or 7 years of age watched me as I watched them.
"What is it, sweetheart?" I asked.
"Are you my father?" she asked in return. "The teachers said that someday our parents would come for us."
I almost wanted to cry at the longing on her face. Kneeling down I took her now warm hand in mine.
"No, I'm not but I will help you and the others. A great wrong was done to you, and you were left behind, forgotten for many years. You won't be forgotten any more. For now, we'll stay here with you until the authorities find families for you. That's what you want isn't it? A mother, a father, a home?"
She began to cry, and I gathered her into my arms, comforting this scared little girl. It would likely take months, maybe even years to find out exactly what had been done to these children. In the meantime, I knew that I would make sure they had what they needed to feel as normal as possible. If that meant becoming their advocate then I was willing to do that as well, as there was no way I would make them get back into those cryostasis cylinders ever again.
When they finished eating Sam started up a Disney movie on the big screen TV that was positioned against one wall with lounge seating in front of it. He even had German language dubbing for it. The arriving mine employees were surprised to see normal kids sitting in their viewing lounge, having seen only the ghost version of them. They were all read in on what we thought the children were and sworn to secrecy. Most of them were fathers and could understand the confusion and fear that greeted these children when one of the employees opened the cylinders.
Maria and Oeznik came to the camp the following day, bringing the toys and clothing that Henry suggested. Oeznik went one step further. He organized a Christmas tree to be set up within a few days, then wore a Saint Nicholas costume that he ordered in specially and spoke kindly to the children in German as he handed out additional gifts during what was likely their very first Christmas party. As we watched the excitement and enjoyment they got out of the event, Oeznik turned to me.
"The Baron wishes you to know that he will financially support the children for as long as they need. Like you, what was done to them was against their will but it is obvious that even with all their abilities they are just children."
"Thank him for me," I replied. "I don't know if we'll ever find out exactly what they were trying to do to them, but they should be allowed to be normal children, as normal as they can be. It makes a difference."
Sam and I volunteered to stay with the children while German speaking caregivers were found so that Maria, Clint and Peter could return home. Several of the Rangers stayed as well as Lieutenant D'Aoust and two of his men. Oeznik stayed with us and proved to be very grandfatherly to the children as arrangements for their care were made. When we all flew out of there on a private jet two and half weeks later, arranged by Oeznik, he approached me with a tablet and showed me a unique flower arrangement online, for my "young lady" as he referred to June, offering to have it sent on my approval. How he knew about her wasn't worth worrying about, but he did promise that Sam and I would make it for the library staff Christmas party. Sam thought the same as I did about Zemo's and Oeznik's assistance. There were times that they were helpful, and this Christmas was definitely one of them.

Red Flags - Clint Barton - Part 3
You were enjoying yourself at the party and spent most of your time with Thor. You would catch Clint's eyes on you, but you would look away. You were focused on getting over Clint. You were trying to convince yourself that you were better off with Clint and that this was a blessing in disguise. But no matter how many times you told yourself this, you couldn't help but sneak peeks at Clint during the entire party.
But nothing in your life could be normal or at peace for long, because hell broke loose and Ultron escaped. Ultron now became the Avenger's number one target with the intention of destroying them.
You arrived at the jet ready to go to South Africa after learning about Strucker's death. You glanced at Clint while boarding, but ignored him for the jet ride. You sneaked onto the vessel with the team while Tony, Steve, and Thor spoke to Ultron trying to obtain information to help us defeat them. Natasha, Clint, and you were on high alert for the enchanted.
Ulysses Klaue had sent his henchmen to take care of everyone while Ultron and the enchanted began to fight with Steve, Tony, and Thor. Natasha and you knocked the henchmen unconscious easily. Clint had moved to start shooting arrows at the other henchmen with guns to stop them. Before you knew it, you weren't sure what was happening but your body slowly fell to the ground. You saw a vision of your worst nightmare before everything went black.
The next thing you knew, you heard a voice as arms wrapped around you. Clint's voice rang in your ears, "Come on, Y/N. Wake up."
"You get Natasha. I can get Y/N here," Thor said after waking up from his own hallucination. Clint hesitated because he didn't want to leave you. "Go."
Clint left you to go help Natasha, but he regretted that the moment he watched your unconscious body being carried out of the vessel by Thor. Once everyone was back on the jet and Tony detained Bruce, they took off. Clint took over flying the jet while everyone tried to recover from the loss.
As you were starting to come back from being unconscious, you could hear Agent Hill over the speakers. "The news is loving you guys. Nobody else is. There's been no official call for Banner's arrest, but it's in the air."
"The Stark Relief Foundation?" Tony asked.
"Already on the scene," Agent Hill confirmed, "How's the team?"
"Everyone's..." Tony stopped himself before looking around at the others, "We took a hit. We'll shake it off."
"Well, for now, I'd stay in stealth mode and stay away from here," Agent Hill stated.
"So run and hide?" Tony asked.
"Until we can find Ultron, I don't have a lot else to offer," Agent Hill said.
"Neither do we," Tony sighed.
You ended up losing consciousness once again. By the time you woke up, it was light outside and the jet was landing in a field. You stood up shakily before feeling an arm go around your waist to assist you. You look over to see it was Thor who had helped you.
"What the hell happened?" you asked.
"Enchanted messed with our minds," Thor told you.
"That was awful," you groaned.
Clint turned his head at the sound of your voice but regretted it the moment he saw you with Thor like that.
"Banner also destroyed a city," Thor added.
"Shit," you muttered before looking at Bruce who was asleep, "Why?"
"She got to him too," Thor shared, "We're going into hiding."
"That's not like us," you argued.
"We don't have much of a choice right now. We need to lay low," Tony spoke up.
Thor helped you walk out of the jet while Clint helped Natasha. Clint kept looking over at you feeling jealousy take over his body. After Thor helped you inside the house, you had a sudden healing and wanted to walk straight out of that house because standing there was none other than Laura herself. It took everything in you to not punch Laura, punch Clint, or walk out.
Clint walked up to Laura and hugged her before kissing her in front of everyone. That was the breaking point where you exited the house infuriated. You could Laura as you walked out, "Is she okay?"
"A lot has happened," Clint said as he watched you.
Thor silently followed after you. That infuriated Clint. But he couldn't let that show, not with Laura there.
"Is everything alright?" Thor inquired.
You turned around and forced a smile, "Yeah. My head still hurts."
Thor crossed his arms, "I know you had a falling out with Barton."
You shrugged, "That's in the past now."
"Doesn't seem that," Thor argued.
"Trust me, it definitely is."
"Okay," Thor nodded before looking into the sky. "I saw something in my dream and I need answers. I won't find them here."
"You're returning to Asgard?" you asked.
Thor nodded, "I'll return, Y/N. But I need to know."
"Good luck," you said softly before Thor swung his hammer and flew into the air. You huffed as you look around to see nothing but a farm building and land. You debated on trying to find a way away from there or if you were going to suck it up.
"Y/N," Natasha called out your name. You turned around to face her, "Could you be any more obvious?"
You rolled your eyes, "Sorry, I don't forgive and forget that easily."
"Nor should you," Natasha smiled, "We'll only be here for a few days until we can develop a plan on what to do next. Can you handle that?"
"I suppose," you nodded, "A few days shouldn't kill me."
"Try to be nice to her, she has no idea," Natasha whispered.
"I plan on ignoring her as I do Barton," you responded.
"Back to last names?" she inquired.
"At this rate, yes," you nodded before looking around, "What are we supposed to do around here until then?"
"Why don't you go shower and rest? That's what I'm planning to do. It's been a long day," Natasha suggested.
"Fine," you agreed before the two of you entered the house. Natasha showed you where one of the bathrooms was so you could bathe before she went to the second bathroom.
You managed to mostly avoid Clint and Laura altogether until Fury arrived and the team met up to develop a plan on how to defeat Ultron. And that leads you to where you are now, back in Sokovia. The Avengers were helping civilians evacuate as Tony went to find Ultron. It wasn't long until Ultron drones started to come after them and it was time to fight them off. You pulled out your machine gun and held it up as you started firing away at the drones causing several of them to explode while everyone else did their own thing to take them down. Suddenly while fighting, you noticed cracks forming in the ground as you looked around confused. People started screaming the city started to rise. You ran and quickly moved to jump, holding onto the side of the city the best you could as it continued to move.
"Y/N!" Clint shouted as he sprinted towards you. He slid to his knees and grabbed your arms to pull you fully onto the now separated city.
"Thanks," you breathed out.
The two of you sat on the ground for a couple of seconds looking into one another's eyes. Ultron speaking is what captured your attention again. The two of you scrambled back to your feet and started shooting at the drones once again.
"Cap, you've got incoming," Tony warned.
"Incoming already came," Steve groaned, "Stark, you worry about bringing the city back down safely. The rest of us have one job, tear these things apart. You get hurt, hurt them back. You get killed, walk it off."
"What great advice," you muttered before reloading your gun.
"Just like old times, right?" Clint smiled over at you.
"We remember it differently," you walked away and started shooting at the robot drones.
Clint moved so your backs were against one another as both of you shot around one another taking out as many drones as you could. That was until Clint ran over to save the female enchanted. You moved closer to the building to cover them until they came out, but it had been a few minutes and you started to become worried as more drones were coming your way.
"Clint! Anytime now would be great!" you shouted before an arrow flew out from a small hole in the wall.
Clint had rejoined you. A few moments passed before the female enchanted joined you in taking out the drones until there were none left in the area you were in.
"All right, we're all clear here," Clint notified the others.
"We are not clear! We are very not clear!" Steve shouted.
"We're coming to you," you stated.
Something quickly flashed by us and picked up the female enchanted before sprinting off, "Keep up old man."
"Nobody would know," Clint held his bow out, "Nobody."
You reached out and pushed the bow down, "Come on, we have time for that later."
Clint started speaking in a mimicking voice, "The last time I saw him, an Ultron was sitting on him. Yeah, he'll be missed, that quick little bastard. I miss him already."
You chuckled which Clint felt proud about before the two of you picked up the pace towards where most of the fighting was taking place now. You helped take out those drones until there weren't any left. You then moved on to helping civilians into a building with some of the others.
"The next wave is going to hit any minute. What do you got, Stark?" Steve asked.
"Nothing great," Tony admitted, "Maybe a way to blow up the city. That'll keep it from impacting the surface if you guys can get it cleared."
"I asked for a solution, not an escape plan," Steve argued.
Tony continued, "Impact radius is getting bigger every second. We're going to have to make a choice."
"Cap, these people are going nowhere," Natasha said, "If Stark finds a way to blow this rock -"
Steve cut her off, "Not until everyone is safe."
"Everyone up here versus everyone down there? There's no math there," Natasha tried to reason.
"I'm not leaving this rock with one civilian on it," Steve stated.
"I didn't say we should leave," Natasha spoke which caught your attention. "There are worse ways to go. Where else am I going to get a view like this?"
"Glad you like the view, Romanoff. It's about to get better," you heard Fury's voice. Then you saw a helicarrier fly into view and a smile stretched across your face.
You stepped forward to join the others with Clint in tow as lifeboats came towards the city.
"This is SHIELD?" the male enchanted asked.
"This is what SHIELD is supposed to be," Steve stated.
"This is not so bad," he said.
"Let's load them up," Steve instructed.
You directed the civilians towards the lifeboats with your teammates. Every time you looked up, you saw Clint was already looking at you. You couldn't fight the small smile wanting to show on your face. You wanted to continue to be mad at him, but seeing him made that difficult.
"Rhodes, get the rest of the civilians on those lifeboats. Avengers, time to work for a living," Tony ordered."Romanoff? You and Banner better not be playing hide the zucchini."
"Relax, shellhead. Not all of us can fly," Natasha responded as you rode with her in the truck until you made it to the church where everyone else was.
"What's the plan?" you asked while approaching the team.
"This," Tony pointed at what was in the center of the destroyed church, "If Ultron gets a hand on the core, we lose."
"Is that the best you can do?!" Thor shouted as Ultron flew down in front of them.
Ultron raised his hand before all the drones came to where he was.
"You couldn't just keep your mouth shut?" you shook your head.
"This is the best I can do," Ultron raised his arms. "This is exactly what I wanted. All of you against all of me. How can you possibly hope to stop me?"
"Well, like the old man said...together," Tony responded before all of the drones charged at them. The team circled up to protect the core from Ultron as they started fighting the Ultron drones. You were starting to run out of ammo which wasn't good. This led you to pick up a pipe laying on the ground and use it to beat down the drones into pieces. You all kept doing this until Hulk punched Ultron off the city and the drones attempted to fly away.
"We got to move out. Even I can tell the air is getting thin," Steve stated. "You guys get to the boats. I'll sweep for stragglers and be right behind you."
"What about the core?" Clint asked.
"I'll protect it," the enchanted female said, "It's my job."
You nodded at her before moving to get into the back of a vehicle as Clint got in the driver's side while Natasha got in the passenger side. Clint then sped off towards the lifeboats. As they neared them, all of you could hear the Hulk's roar.
"We don't have a lot of time," Clint noted.
"So get your ass on a boat," Natasha said before running towards where Hulk was.
Clint got out before helping you jump over the car. The two of you stood there as Clint held onto your hand looking into your eyes. You moved your hand so it dropped to your side as you forced a small smile.
"I've missed you," Clint said.
"I don't think this is the best time to do this," you stated, "We're on a city in the sky."
"It's the perfect time to do this," Clint argued. "I don't want to lose you, Y/N."
"You'll never lose me, Clint," you told him.
"But I did and I never should have dated Laura," Clint shared. "I never wanted to hurt you. That was never my intention."
"You had to have known you would hurt me. Who does something like that?!" you argued.
"Apparently I do because I'm an idiot. I'm a complete idiot, Y/N!"
"I know that! Everyone probably knows that now!"
"But I did it because I was scared!" Clint admitted to you. "I was scared."
"Scared of what?"
"I was scared because I was falling in love with you!" Clint went on. "I didn't want to love you and risk losing you out here on the field! I'm always worried about you when we fight and I don't know what I'd do if I lost you. I hoped if I pushed you away and tried to replace you that I could forget everything! But I couldn't. I can't. I remember everything, Y/N, and I'm still falling in love with you."
You swallowed back your tears as you shook your head, "Clint, no."
"I love you!" he repeated.
"What about Laura?" you screamed.
"I don't want her! She's not you!" Clint fired back.
"You can't do that to her. You can't do that to us!" you said angrily.
"I know I fucked up!"
"You did more than just fuck up, Clint!" you huffed as you looked around the chaos surrounding the two of you. "I can't do this."
"Y/N, please!" Clint begged, grabbing your arms to stop you as you started to walk away. "I love you!"
"Stop saying that!" you shouted before Clint turned you around, used his hands to grab your face, and pressed his lips against yours. You couldn't help but kiss him back as tears started to fall from your eyes. You lifted your hands up slowly to rest on top of his before he pulled away and rested his forehead against yours.
"Y/N," he breathed out, "I love you."
You looked into his eyes before cracking, "I love you too. But we should get our asses on that boat now unless you plan on dying with me here."
He smiled at you before pressing another quick kiss. He grabbed your hand as the two of you moved to board the lifeboat together.
"What about Laura?" you asked.
"I'll talk to her when we get back," Clint promised.
"How do I know this time will be different?" you inquired.
Clint smiled at you, "Because you're officially my girlfriend this time, Y/N. I promise to never hurt you again like that."

Beginning of March 2024 – Avengers Compound, New York "Miss Hill, I am sorry to disturb and bother you with a request like that, but the New York Police Department really needs the support of the Avengers."
"Captain Miller, it's always good to hear you. What kind of support do you need?"
Maria Hill sat on her desk in the new Avenger Compound and answered the call from the man that was known as one of the big shots in the New York Police Department. He was in the end of his 50s and had more criminals arrested than Maria Hill could ever imagine. She had met him before, during her time as Nick Fury's assistant. But things were different now as she was in charge of the Avengers to make sure that they followed the rules of the 'Thanos Accords' – a big book of rules that replaced the 'Sokovia Accords' after the Blip.
Nick Fury was still on duty and in charge for S.W.O.R.D. – a special task force within the re-built organization S.H.I.E.L.D. – and worked with Monica Rambeau, Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis to fight against extraterrestrial threats. He wanted to settle down a bit so he gave the responsibility for the avengers to Maria Hill. Because of the specialty of the task force Fury contacted Maria a lot and asked for superhuman support. Normally Thor was the Avenger that would help him – sometimes together with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Regarding their common past Fury was also still in contact with Captain Marvel – one of the only Avengers who were not under Hill's observance. She never was under Fury's as well, but at least she always came when he asked for her help. Now it looked like Hill had lost her completely, but she was okay with that. She had still a lot of Avengers left and there were new recruits in training as well.
After the fight against Thanos and the loss of Natasha Romanoff, Vision and Tony Stark as well as the complete destruction of the old Avenger Compound the job didn't appear like something to look forward to. But with Tony's heritage – that Pepper put almost completely on a fonds and let only Steve Rogers be able to withdraw some money – they were able to build a new Avengers Compound on the old area. Including a huge memorial for all fallen Avengers throughout the years.
Of course the Avengers wasn't the same than before the fight against Thanos. A lot of them were gone during the snap and re-appeared after five years without even knowing that five years had gone by. The came back and immediately needed to fight against Thanos – thankfully they won.
After the battle it was Steve's job to go back in time to place the Infinity Stones back on their destinated places in time and space. Although it wasn't easy, he was able to do so and returned as planned. Now he was the leader of the Avengers as they needed to find their placed in the new world – that would never be like before Thanos' snap. People were back, borders were shifted and it seems like the governments of the world weren't sure how to handle to situation.
Because of that there were a lot of smaller and bigger fights around the world and the first half year after the Blip and the return of the second half of the world the Avengers helped to stabilize the broken society.
That's why it wasn't unusual that Maria Hill got calls from around the world but the New York Police Department was a very proud foundation and they normally never asked for help. They didn't even ask for help during the drama in 2012...
"There is this mafia clan we are observing for months. We also have two guys undercover that are included in the clan now. The sell huge amounts of drugs and we know that they get a new delivery on Saturday. Normally we would do that alone but the mafia guys have some extraterrestrial weapons and we are not sure if we can handle the situation on our own. That's why we ask for support." Captain Miller said on the phone and she could hear shame in his voice. The NYPD guys were really proud and asking for help was the last thing they like to do.
"Do you know where they get those weapons?" Maria asked curious.
"Not exactly, Ma'am. Our guys found out that the mafia boss bought them in Madripoor but it's not know where the seller got them." Miller answered.
"Okay. Nevermind, I was just curious. Of course we will help you, Captain. Maybe we can interrogate with the mafia boss after we arrested them. It's always good to know what threats are out there."
"Thank you, Ms. Hill. I'll send you the address of the docks via mail. Please let me know who you're going to send so that I can tell my officers and agents."
"I will send Captain America, Sergeant Barnes and Sam Wilson. The combination of their abilities will be good for the mission and with the two super soldiers by your side no extraterrestrial weapon should be a danger anymore." Hill answered and wrote down to inform the three Avengers about their upcoming mission.
"We do a debriefing about the mission tomorrow morning at 10a,, maybe the three can be there as well." Miller suggested and Maria nodded with an "Uh-Huh" as response.
"I'll send them to your headquarter at 10 tomorrow."
"Thanks, Ma'am!"
"You're welcome. Is there anything else I can do for you, Captain?" she asked with a little smile on her face. She knew that he would never ask for a second favor in one phone call. It was Captain Miller she was talking with – not in a million years he would ask the Avengers for two favors. She was pretty sure he even regretted to ask for the first one.
"No, thank you. Have a good day." Miller answered and ended the call without wasting another second.
Maria hummed a happy melody while sending a text message to Steve, Bucky and Sam to inform them about the upcoming mission and the debriefing. She got three thumps up as response before she stood up from her chair and made her way to the cafeteria to get some lunch.
⍟ ⍟ ⍟
The debriefing went well and everybody knew what to do in the mission on Saturday. Steve learned that this time it wasn't just important to catch and arrest the bad guys, it was also important to have sturdy proofs so that they will stay in jail as long as possible. That's why they had to wait until the mafia boss opened the cargo boxes and revealed the drugs. The undercover men were bugged so when the mafioso mentioned the drugs they had enough proof to give him and the member of his clan a lifelong trip to jail.
The undercover agents would say the sentence "The water is very salty today" as sign for Steve and Bucky to storm the warehouse where the delivery was stored. They should go first as with Steve's shield and Bucky's vibranium arm they would be able to take a few hits with the guns and extraterrestrial weapons that were some kind of laser weapons. With the element of surprise on their side they hoped to have all mafioso in handcuffs as soon as possible. The police officers and agents would wait outside all exits of the warehouse to catch some mafioso when if they decided to flee. Sam would be observing the area together with Redwing and was on hold. If someone still managed to escape it was his job to catch and arrest them.
The plan was solid and nothing special so Steve, Bucky and Sam were not concerned that something could go wrong.
As Saturday came the three of them changed into their signature outfits and made their way to the docks nearby with the Quinjet. Thanks to a brand new invisibility-technology that T'Challa and Shuri invented in Wakanda, no one would see the Quinjet and they could land it on top of one of the warehouses without any problem.
They made their way down to the docs where they met Agent Peralta who was the head of the mission – they had met him the first time during the debriefing.
Bucky wasn't sure if Peralta was the perfect guy for the job as he was joking around the whole time. "Didn't he take the whole mission serious?" Bucky wondered. He would never dare to behave like that during his active time in the Army. It was disrespectful and very out of place. But they were stuck with him and thankfully they would do most of the job anyways. So Peralta and his guys wouldn't be in the way.
The mafia guys arrived at the place and finally Peralta seemed to go into work-mode as he was serious now and told his officers and agents to be quiet.
With his improved hearing Bucky and Steve could hear the mafioso talk to each other about plenty of different things like what they gonna have for dinner or where they plan to go for vacation. It seems like no one takes things like that serious anymore. Bucky sighed and Steve looked at him with confusion in his eyes. Bucky shook his head to tell his friend that it was nothing while they waited for the signature sentence.
The mafia boss (his name was Paulo – nobody knew if it was his correct name or not) went to three big brown cargo boxes and opened them. He looked right into them and smiled – saying nothing.
But they needed him to say something and to confess that he was smuggling huge amounts of drugs. It was important for the trials.
Minutes went buy and he talked to his colleagues about all possible topics without ever mentioning the drugs.
One of the undercover agents wanted to help and asked: "Hey Boss, can I have a look into the boxes?"
Paulo looked at him with an raised eyebrow as he didn't understand why Fabio – that was the undercover name of Agent Sheppard – wanted to look inside of the boxes but he nodded in agreement and Sheppard made his way to the box. He took a long look and continued:
"What's that underneath the wool?"
"What do you mean, Fabio?" the mafia boss asked with a warning tremble in his voice.
"There is something beneath the wool and I don't know what that is." Agent Sheppard said with a straight voice. He really did an amazing job as neither Bucky or Steve could hear fear out of his voice.
Paulo turned around to face the undercover agents and slowly made his way to him – step by step. The whole warehouse was flooded by silence and you could only hear the noises of Paulo's shoes on the cement ground. He stood only a few inches in front of him and looked at him with anger and disbelieve in his eyes.
"There is only one reason why you would ask such a stupid question, Fabio. You're a mole!" Paulo hissed at him and his face turned red in anger.
Agent Sheppard's heartbeat was fast like galloping horses but he tried to maintain his cover. The only way to survive this day and go back to his family in the evening. His wife and the two little children couldn't wait to have him back and he couldn't wait to bring them to bed and read a bedtime story for the first time in months. He missed his family.
"What do you mean, boss? I am not a mole. I helped you to organize this delivery!" he said but couldn't hide the fear in his voice this time.
Paulo looked and him and nobody in the room was sure if he believed him or not.
With a smooth movement he grabbed the pistole that was hidden in the waistband of his trousers and shot Agent Sheppard in the stomach before he turned around to do the same with Agent Carter, who was standing on the other side of the room.
Paulo wasn't sure if the other guy – Ernesto – was a mole too but they came into his clan at the same time and that couldn't be an incident.
Both agents groaned in pain and collapsed on the ground – clutching both hands on the bleeding wounds in their stomachs.
The sound of shots alarmed Steve and Bucky and in the same moment as they nodded at each other and started to storm the warehouse Sam said over comms: "Two men down. Redwing can still recognize a pulse in both of them. We need to save them!"
The two super soldiers ran into the warehouse while Bucky was shooting with his rifle and Cap was throwing his shield at the mafioso. A few seconds later Sam flew into the building and shot at the mafioso as well.
Paulo was killed immediately as one of Bucky's bullets hit him perfectly in the head. The other clan members ran around the warehouse to flee and survive but the NYPD officers expected them and arrested those who were not killed in the hail of bullets. The attack caught them off-guard so most of them hadn't even pull their own guns to defend themselves. Four mafioso including Paulo were killed – the rest catched by the officers and in handcuffs.
Sam landed right next to Agent Carter while Steve ran to Agent Sheppard.
Both Agents already looked pale as they lost a lot of blood. It was all over their clothes and you could see big red puddles under their almost lifeless bodies.
"We need to get them to a doctor as soon as possible!" Sam screamed and grabbed Agent Carter bridal Style.
"Get him to the Quinjet, I'll be right behind you" Steve screamed and started running.
Bucky was left behind with Agent Peralta and his crew to make sure the mafioso made their way to a jail successfully. They could see the Quinjet start – this time without visible – and flew in the direction of the Avengers compound.
"Where are they going?" Peralta asked concerned.
"They will take them to the Avengers Compound. It's the easiest way as most of New York's hospitals don't have enough space on the roof so that the Quinjet can land" Bucky answered and clapped on Peralta's shoulder. Steve had told him that people do that to show another person that you commiserate with them. He never understood that, but he wasn't the best with feelings since the whole Winter Soldier thing. Steve told him, that people do that, so he repeated it.
⍟ ⍟ ⍟
"Maria, this is Steve speaking. We need have two seriously injured agents in the Quinjet. Gun shot wound in the stomach and they already lost a lot of blood. We're arriving in 30 seconds." Steve contacted the compound to let them know what they were up to.
"Copy that. The doctor is not at the compound at the moment, but I called him. He'll be here as soon as possible and brings a colleague. The nurses already prepare two surgeries and take care of the agents in the meantime." Maria answered.
This wasn't exactly how she imagined this mission would go. It was an easy mission. "What could go wrong?" they joked yesterday. And now they were on their way to the compound with two almost dead agents of the New York Police Department. Captain Miller would be angry as hell. She needed to know what happened and would ask Steve right after their arrival.
She could see the Quinjet arrive at the compound and made her way out of her office to an elevator that would bring her to the roof. She could already see a bunch or nurses with two stretchers waiting for the Quinjet to lower its ramp. When they were able to, they wheeled the stretchers inside the jet and came back with two lifeless bodies on each of them. In high-speed they made their way to the elevator to bring the injured agents to the infirmary – a trail of bloody red drops behind them.
"What the hell happened" Maria screamed at Steve who left the Quinjet in that moment – followed by a sad looking Sam.
"Their cover blew up and the mafia boss shot them. It was a mess. Just because they didn't get enough proofs to have him in jail forever. He didn't mention the damn drugs." Steve sighed.
"It was all so fast, we didn't have a chance to prevent the shooting." Sam added.
"Understood. It's not your fault. Where is Bucky?" Maria asked concerned as she looked around the roof and didn't see the grumpy metal armed man.
"He is still with the other officers in the warehouse to make sure that all mafioso get arrested properly. Unfortunately the boss was shot deadly so we can't interrogate him." Steve said while looking into Maria's eyes.
The woman sighed, looked at both of her Avengers before she said: "Well, that's bad. But we have more important things to take care of now. Let's head to the infirmary and see how they are doing. I'm gonna call Barnes afterwards."
The three followed the bloody trail to the elevators and made their way down to the infirmary. It was located on the same floor as their training and work-out rooms as injuries during training were more common than during missions nowadays.
Maria was in front of them and pushed the button to open the door to the infirmary. They stood in a little entrance area with a counter to their right and a lot of doors that lead to examination rooms and other hallways. Steve could swiftly made his look around the room and read the door signs:
· Examination Room 1 · Examination Room 2 · Doctor's Office · Patient Rooms · Surgery · Laboratory · Private
A nurse was sitting behind the counter and as she saw Maria enter the room she stood up from her chair and said: "The doctors are not here yet, but we already prepare them for their surgeries. They got painkillers, blood transfusions and anesthesia."
Maria nodded and grabbed her phone to call the doctors.
"Where are you?" she yelled as the man answered the phone. Steve had never seen her so angry before and he didn't understand why.
"We're stuck in traffic and need at least 20 more minutes" the doc answered with a loud sigh.
"What do you mean you are stuck in traffic? Where? We'll send the Quinjet!" Maria yelled again. Her face was furrowed in anger and a little bit of fear.
"Not possible, there is no possibility to land nearby. I am sorry, we try to come as fast as possible."
Maria ended the call and smashed her phone on the ground – making Sam and Steve jump in the air.
"Maria, what the hell!" Sam exclaimed but Maria ignored him as she turned around to face the nurse again.
"Can you go and check with the nurses if they will survive 20 more minutes. The docs need more time." She said in a calmer voice than before. The nurse nodded and ran straight through the door that said "Surgery".
She came back two minutes later and looked at Maria with a concerned face expression before she said: "They try everything to keep them alive. One of our nurses studied medicine but didn't finish it because she became pregnant. She asks if she should start with the surgery or if they should wait for the doctors to arrive."
Maria looked at her with widened eyes in disbelieve. She should decide that? If a former medicine student should operate on a shot agent?
Maria exchanged looks with Steve and Sam and saw both of them nodding. They were right – they needed to do everything possible to save those agents. The call with Captain Miller would be not nice if they don't survive.
"Do it!" she said to the nurse who ran back to give the instructions.
For the next twenty minutes Maria and the two boys sat on the chairs in the entrance area – waiting desperately for the doctor to storm through the entrance. But it never happened.
Suddenly they realized a movement but it came from the other side of the room. The same nurse than before was standing in the doorframe and looked at them with sad eyes.
"I am sorry but one of the agents just died. The other one is still in surgery and Charlotte is trying to save him. Do you know when the doctors will arrive?" she asked and fear, sadness and concern was shown on her face. There was no need for unnecessary professionality now. They just lost someone.
"I don't know. I try to call him again." Maria said with the same sad face expression. Steve placed a hand on her thigh to comfort her while Sam stood up to walk around the room as he was not able to sit and do nothing anymore.
But the doc didn't answer the phone. He probably knew what another call would mean.
Five minutes later he stormed through the door – closely followed by another male. They didn't even realize that there were people sitting in the room as they directly made their way into the surgery.
"Thank god, they are finally here." Maria thought and leaned back in her chair. Now all they could do was wait.
They didn't expect to see the doctors within the next hours so Maria excused herself to go back to her office and call Bucky to get a status on the remaining mafioso. She tried to avoid to call Captain Miller before she knew if the second agent would survive. Hopefully Charlotte would have already done a good job before the doctors arrived.
Right after she left the elevator on the floor of her office her phone rang and she could see that Steve was calling her.
With a very bad feeling in her gut she answered the phone and heard Steve saying: "The second agent died while the doctors prepared themselves for the surgery. Charlotte did all she could do, but he lost too much blood and the damage in his stomach was intense."
"Thank you for calling me Steve. I think I need to call their Captain before I call Bucky." Maria sighed and knew that the next hours wouldn't be easy for her as there were a lot of calls and bureaucracy waiting for her.
"Maria..." Steve said before she could end the call.
"Yes, Cap?"
"We need a fucking doctor in this compound. This could have been prevented. Can you get us a doctor?" Steve's voice was sadder than she expected it to be as he didn't know the agents before. But Steve had always been an emotional guy – in a positive way.
"I know, Steve. I will get us one as soon as possible." Maria answered.
She had thought about that a few times. Before the snap the compound had a doctor called Helen Cho but she was dusted and after she came back she decided to spend more time with her family and got a part-time job in a local hospital.
Maria went to one of the filing cabinets in her room that contained a lot of notes and files from Nick Fury – with too much advices and helpful information than she could ever imagine to have in a new job. It was amazing but she didn't have the time to go through everything so far.
She looked through the cabinet until she found a big file with the word "doctors" on it. It contained profiles of potential doctors for the compound. Nick always had three or four back-up plans to make sure he got what he needed. He had put post-its on each profile with a number on it – ranking the doctors for their abilities.
Maria grabbed the profile with a large "One" on the post-it and looked at it in detail:
Lynn Summers born Juyl 31st 1992 currently working at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn
The profile also contained a photo of the brunette doctor as well as an e-mail address and a phone number. She decided to call Captain Miller first, Bucky afterwards and Lynn Summers at the end to offer her a new job.

ALRIGHTY HAWKEYE DEBRIEF I WANNA CRY
Everything about that last episode had me s c r e a m i n g like, just wow.
Yelena and Kate bantering and fighting and bantering some more and complimenting each other ? Hit me up, love
Also I love Kazi and Maya's relationship, always here for some platonic deep bonds between people and i feel like that's what mostly happened here, no sappy romance, just real, right bonds, like Nat and Clint, or Kate and Clint, or again, Kazi and Maya (even if Kazi is, well, him)
LAURA BARTON WHAT ARE YOU HIDING I'm still thinking about that scene in Age of Ultron where Tony is like 'This is an agent of some kind..' and fuck, c'mon, SHIELD backstory!!! Probably why she was all chill about Fury hanging out with their tractors so he could speak with Tony
ALSO PYM AND STARK TECH FOR THE TRICK ARROWS LIKE WOW and the whole, Clint making his own arrows and being ✨smart✨ despite being low-key and underestimated is my favorite fanfiction trope anyways
Ah and shout-out to the Rogers Musical for casting a blood tall ass guy for Hawkeye, i love Renner to the moon and back but it was a nice reminder that Clint is a 6"4 or 6"3 blue-eyed blonde idiot, although there wasn't one episode where both Hawkeyes weren't sporting bandages, bruises or bandaids so really, it's cool
I fucking love Maya, I've said it before and I'll say it again, i feel for her and i can't wait to see more of her, and I'm sure Kingpin isn't dead so really, there might be more of her
Jack ? With his sword ? Man i love him it was hilarious, just happily hitting people with his little sword like he's saving the day
THE LARP TEAM FOR GOD'S SAKE I'M IN LOVE Grills you have my heart my soul and everything else
Back to Yelena, i feel for her, i cried when she was talking with Clint, and i was so hoping for a hug of some kind, i hope we get some ressemblance of a friendship between them? Like talking about Natasha and how they both knew her and everything
Detail but I love the little coin trick that Clint taught Kate was useful for her against Fisk, i was waiting for it to arrive and bam, flawless
No boomerang arrow but I'll let it slide, Clint got caught in a giant Christmas Tree and spoke to a little owl, which is such a Clint thing to do
And I've seen Renner in a suit before, but it'll never get old, he looks BADASS Jason Bourne levels badass obviously
I was squealing and begging for Clint to take Kate and Lucky home with him and the noise i made when they did appear I'm, I'm not even ashamed
'i'll have to ask Scott about it' the chaotic potential of their friendship is HIGH man, i want more
Kate's face when Clint called them partners and when he said he was proud of her, or whenever he did something she thought cool, even after six episodes she keeps being in awe and yes, gurl, i feel ya, but like, the whole 'never meet your heroes' here is bullshit, because he's done everything he could to keep her safe and make sure he came out if it all alive and unharmed, father instincts and all i suppose, I'm soft wow
Eleanor talking about consequences and actions and responsibilities while blaming Kate for getting her arrested? Yeah sure okay shut up and stop finding excuses for your behaviour
Lucky. Just, Lucky.
Yelena's hairstyle btw, or her style in general is absolutely stunning, and once again, i love aro/ace representation as platonic relationships being just as strong as romantic ones and this show was all about it so yeah
OH CLINT SAYING HE BROUGHT HOME STRAYS that's my favorite headcanon, Clint randomly picking up strays because he was a stray too, Natasha, Kate, Lucky, whoever neighbors he has in BedStuy in the comics, and like, 'you step out that door, you're an Avenger' bit with Wanda/Pietro, yeah that's my shit, more headcanons I've read with Bucky, or Scott, or i even read some with Wade Wilson, so really, hell to the yeah
Clint is so in love with his family it's painfully wholesome
I'm probably gonna rewatch the finale, or the entire really, and I'll come cry some more about it
I'm in absolute love with this show, i was scared of being disappointed because I had high expectations, but, apart from no background story for Clint, like the Circus and everything which would've been nice but really the show was about Kate so i can't blame anybody, i loved it. Now go get Aja and Fraction some credits because it's all thanks to them, this version of Hawkeye, and
Ima hyperventilate in my bed with my Ronin!Clint Funkopop, anybody wanna join?
Peace ✌️

This is oddly fun lol
Let's see how many of these I can churn out before I get distracted or need a break! (pff. like I need an excuse to watch the show again. Despite its flaws, I really, really love TFATWS, guys)
Without further ado, let's get down to it!
Episode 2: The Star-Spangled Man
I'm pretty sure I'm on record when it comes to my undying hate for John Walker, yes? So obviously, Bucky's grumpiness 100% stays 😂
I'm not really a fan of how much emphasis they put on the shield. I can see it as a catalyst for Bucky to go confront Sam, yes, but he wouldn't keep going "shield shield shield" like a broken record. Bucky has consistently been shown to be an empathetic man. I can't believe for a second that he'd be barking at Sam about having no right to give up the shield; he'd ask why. Sam's got shit to do, so he'd get impatient and not answer.
"Why'd you give up so easily? If you were overwhelmed, I could've helped you-" "You've been ignoring me. Like now, how you're ignoring me walking away from you." "Well, you weren't texting me about this." "You think I needed your permission?!" "No, but I was right there with Steve while he was learning what it meant to be Cap. I wouldn't mind helping you get used to-" "Then go teach him." A vague gesture toward the "Cap is back" posters. Bucky makes a face. "Steve passed the mantle to you. You fought with him. You earned it. That little shit didn't." "What do you want me to do about it?" "Just tell me why, Sam. I mean it. I just wanna understand." "Not now, Buck. I've got shit to do. You see me heading for a plane right now, right?" "This is important!" "So is this." Sam tells him about the Flag Smashers, we get our silly Big Three/Gandalf conversation.
Tumblr media
I'm sorry, but that whole jumping from the plane scene is funny as hell, and I love all the nods they added in to jokes from the press tours that brought us this show in the first place (like ripping the sleeve off his jacket lol). I don't think I'd change a single thing from the Big Three convo to Bucky joining Sam in the warehouse.
"You're doing the staring thing again." "You're staring at your watch," Bucky points out. He knows it's linked to Redwing, he's just pointing out how dumb that line is in that situation. They're there for recon lol. They're meant to be looking around.
I don't...particularly care about the other common gripe here? Meaning, "Bucky's a civilian, so why is he allowed to randomly jump in on a military mission?" Bucky's also known in this universe as an Avenger, just like Sam, so I don't think anyone would really bat an eye at him joining. Also, I have my own agenda related to Bucky's apparent freedom to walk in and out of military/government things.
What does bug me (as funny as it is) is Bucky's animosity toward Redwing. Again... Bucky is a certified nerd. Always has been. If anything, he'd be fascinated by Redwing and Sam would constantly have to slap him away because he's leaning in too close trying to see the tiny watch monitor. "I don't trust Redwing" is just old man griping "I don't trust your newfangled technology" and that... that's not Bucky.
And that "we're not assassins" dig, and then laughing when Bucky gets upset? That's not Sam. Both of these men have shown a remarkable amount of empathy, and Sam has a background in helping traumatized vets. If he cared enough about Bucky to be texting him after Steve left, he'd care enough not to make callous jokes about his time as The Winter Soldier, whether he knows the full story or not.
The fight on top of moving trucks looks cool, but makes no logical sense. I keep trying to think of a way to explain this from a story perspective, rather than a lazy "it looks cool!" filmmaking one, and I'm coming up blank. Anyone with half a brain would have pulled over, had the fight, and then taken off. It was a fun sequence, though... Eh. I'll leave it.
When Karli breaks Redwing, Bucky doesn't say "I always wanted to do that." Again, it's funny - I love the jabs about that stupid robo bird XD - but not Bucky. In my version, he smirks and says "You're so gonna regret that."
"You were kinda getting your asses kicked before we got there." Is immediately followed by Bucky staring him down and asking, "And... how did that fight end for you?" Sam adds, "I don't see them in custody. Are-are they following in a van?" He looks around, sarcastically searching for another vehicle. Walker and Hoskins grimace at each other, grudgingly conceding that point.
Tumblr media
credit to @dailycelebs
Seeing Walker, and having to listen to his stupid pro-government rhetoric, makes Bucky think about Steve. When we cut from the Flag Smashers back to Bucky and Sam and the closeup of Bucky's pensive face, we hear 1940s Steve angrily telling 1940s Bucky about how the higher ups in the army had already written off the POWs and were going to leave them to die. "I love our country, Buck," he laments, "but what do I do when I'm not too sure anymore about the people who run it?"
"What you always do," is young Bucky's answer, "stand for what's right, not who's in power."
Perfect lead-in to the conversation about handling things themselves.
Tumblr media
When Sam meets Isaiah, and hears his story, not only is he horrified and heartsick for him, but he also begins to see Bucky in a new light. He's seeing Bucky's face, the way he tries to hide his emotions and not make this conversation about him, and he's putting things together. He's still upset at being out of the loop, but he's seeing more of the situation than just "omg black super soldier". When Bucky says "he'd already been through enough," Sam asks quietly, "like you?"
The racist cop comes back before Bucky can answer, to arrest him for missing his appointment with Raynor.
ngl guys, I was so moved by the difference in how that cop treated Sam (before knowing he's Important) vs how he treated Bucky (knowing that the government views him as a violent, if pardoned, criminal). He approaches Sam with his hand on his gun, eager to defend Bucky; "is this guy bothering you?" Just because they're having a heated conversation. Then, when he sees that there's a warrant for Bucky, he approaches timidly, apologizes, treats him gently and politely. By "moved," btw, I don't mean "it was so sweet." I mean "this is fucking sick, and very, very realistic." White cops see a white guy and treat him with respect regardless of his actual criminal record, while being openly hostile towards an innocent black man without even knowing who he is, just because he's black. Moments like this made me applaud Spellman.
"You, too, Sam - That wasn't a request" is Sam's first sign that there's something off about Raynor.
Look, again... The couples therapy banter is funny because Sebastian and Anthony are funny, but that scene, from a storytelling and a mental health standpoint, is atrocious. Without some underlying reason behind her actions, Raynor is just a pointlessly terrible therapist.
Rather than insulting Bucky from the outset, Sam is angry with Raynor for violating Bucky's privacy by not only introducing herself as his therapist, but forcing a "couples" session without her patient's consent. With his background pre-Avenging, he knows this shit shouldn't fly. He immediately points out how unprofessional she's being.
Raynor doesn't bother listening - the fuck does she care, really? She shrugs and casually admits it's "slightly unprofessional" but proceeds anyway.
"Whatever's eating at him?" Sam scoffs. "Did you really just say that to a WWII veteran and the world's longest-serving POW with complex PTSD? Did I hear that right? I've had, maybe, like five conversations with this man since we met, and even I know he's been through some shit and-" "Sam," Bucky tries to interrupt, looking uncomfortable. With his crushing guilt, he has an easier time dealing with insults than someone coming to his defense. "No," Sam snaps. "If the HIPAA Slayer over here wants to drag me into this, she's damn well gonna hear what I have to say!" He turns back to Raynor and demands, "Is this how you've been treating him this whole time? Downplaying what he's been through and making a grown-ass man sound like a sulking teenager?" Raynor keeps her cool, but barely. Visibly frustrated and annoyed, she ignores Sam's tirade and tries to force the conversation back onto the track she wants it on. Bucky's embarrassed and doesn't know how to react to any of this, so he still makes that little "he would talk less" jab. Sam, seeing that he's not going to get anywhere with him until they're away from this bitch, glowers and plays along. We get our silly/angry banter.
Tumblr media
After their argument with Walker, Sam finally confronts Bucky about what really happened to him.
"He meant HYDRA; HYDRA used to be my people." "Were they?" Sam asks, stopping him and looking him in the eye, not letting him look away or deflect. "Steve was under the impression that they were your captors. I was under the impression that the Wakandans spent two years deprogramming you so no one could use you the way HYDRA did ever again." "I-" Startled, not expecting that, Bucky stutters a little and admits, "Yeah, I... That's true, I guess." "You guess?" "Does it matter? Sam rolls his eyes. "I dunno, does it matter that you were a slave for most of the 20th century?" "I doubt it matters much to my victims." "HYDRA's victims," Sam corrects firmly. "Just like you." Bucky fidgets; he doesn't know what to do or say. No one since Steve has even so much as insinuated that Bucky wasn't 100% culpable for what he did while under HYDRA control. "Look," Sam sighs, "I don't particularly like you. I don't hate you, but I'm not your biggest fan." "...Thanks?" "I just need you to know where I stand-" "Yeah, got it-" "-So you know I'm not biased like Steve when I say you had no choice. I don't know your story, but I know no one flips on a dime from docile and plagued with guilt to an unstoppable killing machine and back without some serious psychological damage behind that. I'm not saying you're an innocent little bunny, but I don't think you're a monster." "Thanks," Bucky croaks, more sincerely this time, and a bit choked up. He clears his throat and looks distinctly uncomfortable as he grumbles, "but to catch these guys, we may need to talk to a monster." Sam cringes. "I was afraid you'd say that."

i made a mistake | steve rogers x reader
summary: after the events of civil war steve leaves a special someone behind
a/n: please do imagine his entrance just like this one thank you very much. also happy holidays everyone, i hope you have a wonderful time with your loved ones <3
masterlist
Tumblr media
When the Sokovia Accords came up you had no choice but to follow your beliefs even if that meant going against Steve's. You two weren't really dating but you were best friends and everyone knew you were together anyway. You thought that the fact that you had different opinions wouldn't be enough to tear you two apart but when Steve went into hiding and cut all contact with you you were devastated. The Avengers had broken up and you had lost your bestfriend, your world came crashing down. Natasha had been your biggest support until a certain day.
It was 6 am, you couldn't sleep anymore so you decided to go to the gym to meet up with Nat, who was usually up by 5:30, to hopefully have a productive workout. As you got downstairs though, you were met with silence. So you asked Friday for your assassin friend only to get a "Miss Romanoff left the Facility 3 hours ago" as an answer. You called Nat in hopes to learn something about her location but she had left her phone in her room. So you decided to give it a visit, try and find out any hints as to where she had gone but you only found a letter, "To Y/n"
it said. You were worried by now, no idea has to what the hell was going on so you took no time into opening the letter.
"Dear Y/n, I'm sorry I left with no warning, I only had one chance to meet them. I went with Cap and the others into hiding. I really didn't want to leave you but the government already had eyes on me because i helped Cap and Barnes escape and Wanda needed help hiding with Vision too. I'll contact you soon ok? I'm sorry."
You couldn't believe it. You weren't mad at Natasha for leaving, in fact you understood her reasons perfectly. You were mad at Steve, for leaving, for not contacting you, and for inviting Natasha, leaving you alone and heartbroken with no news from him.
Weeks had gone by since Natasha had left. You were now alone in the Avengers compound, Clint and Scott were in house arrest, Tony had moved out wanting to spend his time with Pepper and away from everything related to Steve, Rhodey was back to his apartment as well, Thor and Bruce where nowhere to be seen and the others had left. You had thought about moving out but the compound was your home and you had spent too many good times there. But now everything was silent, dark, cold. You spent your days heavily working out, watching tv and every once in a while going on missions given to you by the government. Eventually one day you got news from Natasha trough a message.
"Y/n, it's Natasha, we need to talk. Meet me in this address tomorrow at 11pm."
"How do i know it's you?"
"You know it's me y/n/n" she replied, with a nickname only the avengers gave you.
And with that you packed a backpack with some essentials, just in case your visit would take longer than anticipated, and some weapons because you would rather be safe than sorry. And in the next day, at 11pm you arrived at your destination. The house you were looking at wasn't really big, it was located in a quiet neighborhood about 2 hours away from the compound. Natasha had told you a spare key was hidden under the front rug so you got in with no problems. It was silent and dark (except for a weak lamp creating creepy shadows in the hallway), much like your home had been since all of the avengers left. You called out for Natasha, afraid that it had all been a mistake and no one was actually in, but when a figure came out of the shadows, debunking your fear, it wasn't Nat. It was Steve, your best friend who had broken your heart that was now standing in front of you, regret and sadness in his eyes. He looked exhausted with his new look and new suit.
"Hi y/n"
"Where's Nat?" you managed to spill out.
"It was never Nat. It was me. We need to talk."
"No, Steve" you said, eyes tearing up already "You left me. Alll these months i was waiting for you to contact me, just tell me you were ok. But you took Natasha in and left me." you were chocking on your own words by now.
"I never meant to hurt you y/n." his eyes where watering too, you could notice under the weak lights. "That was why i didn't take you in. I didn't want to put you in danger."
You believed him. Every single word he said made sense to you. And you wanted to hug him so bad, but the shock was still ruling your body and you felt like you couldn't breathe let alone move. You're eyes were getting wetter by the moment and you knew you were about to break down in tears.
"Come here, love" he said in a low voice, arms opening up to you and in a second your bodies were pressed against each other after such a long time. You were holding onto him for dear life and you were both crying.
"I made a mistake. I'm so sorry." he kept apologizing, muttering into your hair how much he missed you and how regreted ever leaving you. He caressed your face, wiping away your tears with his hands, and rested his forehead on yours.
"I love you."
But after all he had put you through your feelings for him had never changed.
"I love you too."

Breaking Up -- Part 2
Pairing: Peter Parker x Stark!Reader
Summary: Tony had Peter break up with you, and the aftermath was weighing on Tony's conscious, allowing secrets to surface
----
Days had turned into weeks and weeks turned into a month and a month turned into two. It wasn't until then that Tony Stark realized he had screwed up.
Tony never would have thought in a million years that two kids so young could be so invested into one relationship. Tony never was so he believed teenagers feelings could never run so deep.
But now that he realized how bad the situation had gotten, he knew he had to do something.
The state the two of you were left in couldn't be worse.
Peter Parker, the boy who basically lived to please Mr. Stark, was so heartbroken and guilt ridden, he wasn't fighting crime like he used to. Now, he was getting hurt more often, some of the wounds being quite serious. It forced Tony to take his suit away for the second time, saying he could have it back when he felt better. Another shocking thing that happened, was that Peter stopped talking as much, which worried everyone around him. The kid that never knew when to shut up, barely spoke 20 words in a day now.
You on the other hand, scared Tony the most, and not just because you were his daughter. No, you had decided to act out in ways that Tony wasn't ready for. You had decided to sneak out of your room almost every night. He had no idea what you did but he knew it wasn't good, the pounding headaches you had in the morning to the poorly concealed hickeys on your neck all made his father alarm go off. It wasn't until he caught you making out with some boy in your bedroom when he placed you under home arrest. Another thing that upset him was the newfound anger and hatred you placed towards Peter all while he was suffering in silence. And everytime you tried talking about it to your dad, he had found some way of defending Peter because of how guilty he felt. The more he tried to protect Peter the more you acted out and it became an endless cycle.
Tony knew he had to fix it and he had to fix it now. But the way that the news came out wasn't how he intended it.
Tony was holding a meeting with the Avengers, one that Peter had to go to even though his suit was taken away. Peter had been visibly anxious and hadn't said a thing in the meeting all night. He sat close to the door, ready to leave once it was over.
And then the worst possible thing that could have happened at that moment happened.
You had walked into the room, neck and chest littered in hickeys. "Dad have you seen my ear buds." You asked not looking up from your phone.
Tony stopped talking to the Avengers and everyone's attention fell on you. Tony narrowed his eyes, "I thought I put you under house arrest, young lady."
You scoffed and looked up at him, not taking note as to who else was in the room, "Just cause I can't go out, doesn't mean I can't sneak boys in." You said rolling your eyes.
Steve cleared his throat, "(Y/N) you shouldn't talk back to your father."
Tony pointed his finger at Steve, "I don't need your help parenting my daughter." Steve raised his hands in surrender, and Tony pointed at you now, "And you-"
Tony was caught off by a loud sob. Everyone in the room looked over to find Peter in tears. Your eyes flew to Peter, seeing him on the couch next to you.
Your eyes widened before your gaze hardened, and you looked at your dad, "What the fuck is he doing here." You seethed.
"Watch your language. He's in a meeting right now, okay? I know you aren't happy with him but you need to understand that he's an Avenger."
You scoffed again, "I told you I never wanted to see him again and you didn't even have the decency to tell me he was coming over!"
Tony raised his eyebrows, "Decency? You want to talk to me about decency? Because I don't think it's very decent of you to walk around covered in hickeys after I told you not to see any more boys and now you made Peter cry."
Everyone watched in horror, except for Peter, who was crying in his hands.
"So? Who cares if he cries. He should be crying. I don't remember you caring that much after he broke up with me. Speaking of which, you've been on his side ever since it ended between us! Stop defending him, he broke my heart! " You yelled angrily.
"Fine! You wanna know why I keep defending him? It's because I'm the one who told Peter to break up with you!" Tony yelled without thinking
Silence washed over the room, followed by a low whistle from Sam.
You tried to process what was happening. "..Wait, w-what?"
"Shit." Tony muttered, "Listen, I-"
"You told Peter to break up with me?" You asked, trying to process the information. You looked back at Peter, who had been wide eyed. "Is- is this true?"
"I-I-I- uh.... y-yeah."
You felt like you were about to cry, overcome by an array of emotions. You were strong, you were a Stark afterall. But Peter seemed to be the only person that could bring you to tears. You looked back at your dad, "W-why?"
Tony glanced at all of the Avengers disapproving looks and cleared his throat, "Maybe we should go someplace else."
"No, just tell me why you did it."
He sighed. "Because it was dangerous."
"...So, the most reasonable idea for you was to have Peter break up with me and break my heart?" You asked slowly. "Do you understand what I've been going through these past two months? I convinced myself that I hated Peter, when in reality this is all your fault."
Tony was becoming impatient, "(Y/N), you don't understand. You can't be Iron Man's daughter and Spider-Man's girlfriend. It's too dangerous for you."
"Then I wish you weren't my dad." You said coldly.
Tony stood speechless, as you left the room leaving to cry somewhere else.
The room was completely silent, and no one dared to say a word.
"I-" Tony started, "Peter find her and fix your relationship, I...I need to be alone right now."
Tony left the room without another word, leaving the rest of the Avengers alone. Peter sat there in shock at what had just happened.
"What are you waiting for kid?" Bucky asked.
"Oh, um right." He swallowed before getting up to go find you.
Peter felt overwhelmed. So much had been happening these past two months and everything had just blown up. When he saw you walk into the room covered in hickies he just broke down. It wasn't like he hadn't known what you had been up to, it was all over the news, how Tony Stark's daughter had been spotted at parties with various guys. But seeing you in person for the first time like that hurt him.
He was scared. You, Peter, and Tony, were all in pain right now and Peter wasn't sure if he could fix it.
He reached your bedroom door and knocked on it, "I-it's Peter."
A second later the door opened, revealing your tear stained cheeks. You sniffled, "H-hi."
"Can- can I come in?"
You nodded and stepped to the side. You closed the door behind Peter, and turned around to face him.
"S-so there's no other girl?"
"Of course not, I love you so much, I could never leave you for someone else."
You felt a wave of new tears rush down your cheeks. You pulled Peter into you, and clung onto him. He wrapped his arms around you and buried his face in your hair as he cried with you.
"I've missed you so much princess."
"M-me too.... It's been so hard without you, please never listen to my dad again."
"I know, I'm sorry. I promise I'll never leave you again." He said, pulling back to look at you. His gaze fell down to your neck and chest, seeing the hickies again.
You knew what he was looking at, and a guilty look crossed your face. "I- I've done some stuff that I'm not proud of."
"Did you s-sleep with any of them." Peter asked holding his breath.
"No." Peter felt relief. "It never got that far."
Peter nodded. "I'm not mad about it, y-you were in a lot of pain. So don't blame yourself." He said, knowing that it was something you'd end up feeling guilty about.
You nodded and stared up at Peter, and then pulled him down into a much needed kiss. The kiss was needy and filled with so many emotions. He tasted just like you remembered, sweet and something you could only describe as Peter.
You pulled back breathless and he rested his forehead against yours, "You should talk to your dad. He may have made a stupid decision, but he really loves you."
You closed your eyes, "I know. I'm just still so mad at him, and I just want to spend some more time with you. I promise I'll talk to him tonight."
"Okay." He whispered, before kissing you again.
~
Soon after the explosive night, things returned to normal. You and your father came to an understanding, both apologizing to each other. The hickies finally faded.... well except for the new ones Peter gave you. Peter got his suit back and you started behaving again.
Tony regretted ever breaking the two of you up, because while it was still dangerous, he had to admit that seeing you two were perfect for each other, and he'd much rather see his daughter happy than worrying about what if's.
