Rising Sign Observations!!!

rising signs are one of my fav parts of astrology, so i’d like to share some observations! this is my FIRST original astro post (ever) so be nice. feel free to share yours with me!! note: these are mostly based off of irl friends and kpop idols lol!

CAPRICORN: royal look. there’s always a line waiting around the corner for their attention. will find one type of style or specific sweater and wear it nonstop!!!! like they’ll go blonde once and then adopt it as their birth hair color.

AQUARIUS: sharp noses and innately athletic frames. although this isn’t appearance-related, aquarius rising often feel alone or like they don’t fit in :/

PISCES: prominent cheeks make them look like babies. personally, i think the water influence contributes to them being such good dancers. ageless. giggly.

ARIES: sharp jawlines. natural, boxy, instagram-esque faces. if they were puppies they’d be the standard, well known golden retrievers. features are evenly laid out.

TAURUS: instead of detailed looks, for a taurus rising they are incredibly warm. it’s like they emit light. they literally glow. (and usually have earth green eyes or eyes that change with the seasons!)

GEMINI: no two gemini risings look the same. someone with gemini rising may not even look like themselves! their appearance may have altered over time like braces, unprovoked weight loss, or the hair they were born with changes a bit as they age. or they just change their style up often! hard to explain lol

CANCER: round faces like the moon but instead of a nightly glow they’ve got huge eyes that beam like car headlights.

LEO: these are the people voted best smile. glittery eyes. people with straight hair may have some curl, have hair that easily curls, or looks good with curls. people with curly hair may have a looser hair type rather than kinky curls.

VIRGO: their auras are darker than scorpios but they’re not scary just wicked. they carry your desire in the palm of their hand.

LIBRA: they’ve got freckles whether they are drenched or splattered. nonthreatening, effortless, 90’s heart throb look. because their personalities change frequently, the quality of the light emitted will change too.

SCORPIO: kind of long faces with pretty, heart shaped lips. May have dimples somewhere. unintentionally intimidating but really aren’t intimidating. although some scorpio risings like being unapproachable, some of them haaaate it and the sadness sticks to them like a rain puddle.

SAGITTARIUS: they are simply sexy and have nice butts. these mfs love to talk and I guess their eyes kind of reflect that since they are so enthusiastic to spark a convo they may be extra attentive to their surroundings.

HBO Max New Releases: August 2021

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.

The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

It’s a good month for movies overall on HBO Max. Many intriguing library titles arrive on Aug. 1, including Collateral, The Fugitive (1993), The Shawshank Redemption, and Spawn. The Jurassic Park trilogy (Aug. 14), and Godzilla v. Kong (Aug. 17) make their return to the Warner streaming service a little later on.

HBO Max’s original TV offerings can’t compete with The Suicide Squad in August 2021, but there is still plenty to enjoy. The third season of erstwhile DC Universe series Titans premieres on Aug. 12. That will be followed by the second season of former Comedy Central delight The Other Two.

Wicked, part 6 (DT royal AU)

Summary: While Dracovia says goodbye to their past king, the new ruler steps up as it burns their life to the ground.

Warnings: swearing, angst, fluff, death, indicating SMUT

“This is a peaceful gathering!” Y/N shouted, hoping the soldiers would see reason. She had begged her father to let the people gather on the border and protest the possibility of war between Dracovia and Astros as well as the signing of a peace treaty their king required. Y/N agreed, wanting to avoid bloodshed, to protect her people but also the people of Astros. If the kingdoms started a war, those most innocent would surely suffer and she couldn’t just ignore that. So, aware this was likely a ploy to see the princess of Dracovia to report her beauty back to their king, Y/N and her best friend arrived at the meeting point, the people following to show their support for the future dragon queen.

But it was anything but peaceful for as soon Y/N and Andrea joined the soldiers to sign the treaty, Andrea was forcefully taken right before her eyes. She felt her best friend’s hand slip from her grasp as they dragged her toward the block, Y/N’s pleading going unanswered.

She felt utterly helpless as she watched them force Andrea onto her knees and her head onto the block, the sword coming down on her so quickly Y/N had barely had time to exhale before the blood pooled and her friend’s head was no longer attached to her neck.

She swore she’ll never be so stupid, so naïve, so helpless ever again. But he found herself in the very same position.

She began to cry. She didn’t want to, she didn’t want the men to see her weakness, She couldn’t help it, though. She felt utterly alone and helpless.

Her screams echoed long into the night, filled with raging despair and the sorrowful betrayal she had been a victim of. She didn't break quietly, it was like every atom of her being screamed in unison, traumatized by all the things that were done to her since she was a child. She thought she was safe with Grayson, that she could entrust her heart and soul to him. When the wracking sobs passed, she cried in such a desolate way that no-one could bear to listen for long.

She finally understood her mother's words:

"Never trust any man and never love anyone but your children."

Y/N wished she stayed true to her initial reasoning, for her heart had clearly lied to her mind who had warned her of it all on numerous occasions.

She sunk to her knees, her entire body trembling, inconsolable. He had robbed her of her freedom, of her family's legacy, of her ability to love and trust. That was something much more sinister than a simple betrayal - she would have taken a dagger to the heart much kinder than what he had done to her.

So, there she sat, her face red and wet from tears she's spilled over her unfortunate fate - she was a queen with neither a crown nor a kingdom, the most powerful piece on the board with no moves left.

There was no room in her heart for love she had for Grayson anymore. All she had was hate, unparalleled hate. She wanted what was her and she planned on taking it – with fire and blood if necessary. She’s too proud to surrender, too proud to bend, too proud to lose. If war is what Grayson wants, she’d give it to him.

“My Queen?”

Y/N recognized the voice of her lady immediately, the door opening right after. Standing up, she quickly wiped her tears away and straightened her back. No one can see her emotions anymore. She had put despair and fear aside as if they were garments she simply did not wish to wear. She’s a dragon and she’s not afraid to burn heaven down if it meant protecting her kingdom.

“We need to go to Dracovia.” That’s all Y/N said before walking past her lady, certain she was free even if it’s been at least five or six hours since her husband locked her up in the tower.

“Who will we call? The kingdom fell without a single shot fired!” Mareen shouted, effectively stopping her queen in her spot, the aftershock of her lady’s words just registering with her.

“What do you mean? I thought Dracovia was burning.” Y/N tried to keep her voice leveled and her mind open, but she started to shake, visibly trembling in a fit of rage. Why would her people ever surrender to a foreign invader? Why would they give up everything without a fight?

“Apparently your late father did the burning,” Mareen responded a little quieter for she could sense the danger in her Queen’s posture and even more in the tone of voice she used whenever she tried to conceal how close to madness she truly is.

“So…he is dead.” Y/N sighed, closing her eyes as she pressed her lips together. She felt horrible about not feeling horrible about his death at all. In a way, she always knew he wasn’t a good man, but he was always good to her...as good as he could be considering the way he had brought her up - a woman with no trust, no love, no remorse in her heart...a woman who was taught to use her body and mind in the most wicked ways possible.

“I’m afraid so,” Mareen responded, waiting for an order from her queen. But Y/N needed a moment to breathe. She had just gotten confirmation she no longer had any parents in this world, that she has a whole kingdom on her shoulders now. It’s one thing to think about what kind of a queen she wanted to be, but to actually have to be one at such a young age was different.

“Contact Sir Pembelton. He’ll be much more loyal to me than Sir Mance ever was.” Y/N ordered, heading for the shores where she expected to find her knight, the one spy she had recruited herself a little after Andrea died. She knew he’d be there before her for Sir Pembelton was always on time even when a time frame wasn’t set. She believed him to be more knowledgable of the situation than herself.

Her heart breaks with every step she takes through the halls, walking out into the rose garden she had grown accustomed to. This place, the castle…it felt like home. She wanted to remember it as such, not allowing her husband’s betrayal to taint the memories.

All she could do was to bow her head until her chin touched her chest and keep walking. Finding her place on the beach, the crashing waves licking at her bare feet, she drew in a deep breath to stop herself from losing her nerve.

“Enjoying quiet walks on the beach?”

She didn’t need to turn around to know it was the gallant knight she handpicked that stood behind her. Truth be told, there was a time she wanted to name him her king, but that was over once her father allowed her to be traded like cattle for a peace no one truly kept.

“Not as much as sitting on my throne.” Y/N quipped, smirking once he stepped before her only to fall on one knee in respect.

“Your majesty.”

She placed a hand on his shoulder, allowing him to stand proudly once more. He still looked as dark and as brooding as the first time she laid her eyes on him when she was barely fourteen. He was her friend, perhaps the only man who has yet to fail her. His light blue eyes are stark different in comparison, filled with an undeniable melancholy she only ever saw on the day they parted – when he pressed a kiss to the back of her hand and gave her a note…a note where he admitted to the great love he bears her, the love he assumed was hopeless.

There had been many nights when she wondered what would have happened if she didn’t send him off to Astros, but she knew she’d never trust any soldier as much as she trusted him to be loyal. He was a descent of the dragon himself, one of the rare ones, and the dragons stick together.

“Brooks, you never have to bow to me when we’re alone.” She told him, her hand resting on his shoulder still. He offered her a lopsided smile, his eyes drowning her in memories she shouldn’t cling to. It felt as if she was committing a great sin, as if this small act of gentle conversation was one of cheating on her spouse…the one who had taken her kingdom from her without a warning, without any sign of betraying her. But she felt guilty nonetheless, taking a step back for her own sanity and morality.

“I need to go home and I believe you know why.” Brooks has never been a man of many words, his response being a simple nod.

“And I need my army with me when we get there. Can you arrange that?” She cocked her head to the side when he nodded once more before speaking into his earpiece and she heard the unmistakable sound of an approaching helicopter.

“Your majesty, the king is asking for you.” Mareen whispered, holding a hand over the phone as she tried to push it into Y/N’s hand. She takes it, looking at it, pondering, but not for long. In a fit, she curled her hand around it and pulled her arm back before sending the phone flying into the ocean.

“Whatever it is, I do not care. I’ll see him in less than an hour.”

However, when Y/N arrived to her beloved kingdom, she found herself in quite a shock. Not only did the people come out to greet her, free as they seem, the army was there as well, not one of the soldiers fighting for their kingdom. What’s worse, neither were Astrovian soldiers.

Dracovia seemed too peaceful considering there was a change in power. Their king had been killed, yet they disregarded it as dirt under their fingernails. But the oddest part was that they regarded her as their Queen, as if nothing had changed at all.

“Have they all assumed he came for the throne in my name?” Y/N wondered out loud as she passed the crowds from above, heading to the castle. If Grayson came under false pretense to claim the throne for her - the rightful heir, it wouldn’t be so shocking to see the people have caved so quickly.

“That’s because he did. King Grayson didn’t claim the throne in his name, but your name, Majesty.” Brooks spoke up and Y/N nearly choked on her own saliva. How could she believe that after the way he treated her like a criminal and had her locked up in a room he clearly prepared months before…ever since he knew of her plan to dethrone him and take Astros for herself. He knew all along and she gave him so many chances to admit to it but he only ever gave her one. Had he told her what he knew, too many of their disputes would have never happened and she would have…she would have told him the full truth. They could have been happy.

How could she trust him now when he had fooled her so many times before?

“I miss when you called me honey.” Y/N whispered solemnly, pushing the thought out of her mind. She would see her husband any minute now, there was no need to dwell on what if’s. After all, no one calls you honey when you’re sitting on a throne.

The first one to meet her at the landing tower was the sworn sword who had betrayed her. The man she thought would die if she ordered so, but he was quick to bow to a man he didn’t even know.

“My princess, I beg your forgiveness.” He kneeled, his sword placed in his hands as he offered her to do what she wished with him – spare him or kill him with his own sword.

“I am not your little princess!” She spat, disgusted with the man who swore an oath to be loyal only to her. “I am a queen and it will do you well to remember that Sir Mance for I can have your head for treason.” She threatened but she didn’t touch the sword offered to her. Instead, she left the old knight on his knees without a pardon either.

Once at the castle, Y/N headed toward the throne room. If she would find Grayson anywhere, it would be there, surrounded by the council and ready to be crowned.

“THE QUEEN!” A chorus of shouting had begun as she entered, everyone dropping to their knees moments after. Everyone, but Grayson.

“You’ve arrived just in time. You’re to be crowned queen in the wake of your father’s death.” Grayson explained, watching her for a reaction. There is a rawness about her that many don’t see nor understand. She is chaos in the wind and fire across the sky and not everyone appreciates the beauty of a storm for most cower in fear and hide. He knew she wasn’t happy about any of it, especially with the way he handled things, but he had to act fast and there were far too many things he couldn’t tell her.

She swallowed her pride and feigned her marriage is as perfect as everyone believes. She couldn’t tell the kingdom how her husband had went behind her back and now she was to be a mother to a man who would never trust her and she didn’t think she could trust him either. Not ever after the stunt he pulled.

Crowned in glory, the pair took their seats at the throne before the room cleared out and gave them much needed peace as a celebration began outside.

“Why?” It’s all he asked as she pulled her crown off as it felt too heavy for the first time in her life. She had always carried the crown with grace and class, but she couldn’t bear the heaviness of the crown her mother once bore. The same woman who told her never to love anyone, to have only suspicion and hate in her heart. The woman who had died before Y/N could understand her words fully.

“Your father was sending men to attack his own people. Besides, it was never his throne to sit on. You don’t have to believe me, but the things he had done to your mother…I believe he killed her. I think he’d kill our child as well if he had a chance.” Grayson glanced at her, eyeing the stony expression on her face as she stared into a wall passively. Grayson expected her to shout, to scream, to set the whole castle alight, anything but the silence she gave him.

“This marriage wasn’t of convenience for me,” Grayson spoke silently, placing his hand over hers gingerly in fear of scaring her…or worse, in fear of being pushed away. He meant to tell her no convenience would force him to marry but the love he had already felt for her for a long time.

“Yeah, if anything it was of inconvenience.” She responded coldly, no longer prepared to wage a war. A part of her understood for that part of her remembered the horrors of her childhood. That part of her knew that her upbringing wasn’t exactly normal either. She was aware her father had been a monster, but he was all she had. He never put a hand on her, despite all his shortcomings.

Unable to bear a conversation with Grayson right now, Y/N stood and walked away. She rushed through the halls that held so many haunting memories, going to her bedroom, the one place she could hide from the world. But Grayson couldn’t let her go. Not yet. Not right now. Not when he knew that sooner rather than later, he’d have to leave her in Dracovia.

“What are you thinking?” He asked, watching her with a pensive look on his face. It took all his effort to stand, to face her now. He longed for her, but most of all, he wanted her to show him emotion. Any emotion.

“What I’m thinking is that the only man I ever trusted, my husband has deceived me!” And emotion is what he got. He wanted anger, but he got pain – so much pain and distrust and he knew then the only way he could reconcile is to use their physical bond instead of the vastly damaged emotional one.

Sitting on the bed, Grayson pulled his armor off.

"Come here," he said quietly, each word difficult.

She did so immediately. "Yes, my king."

He frowned slightly and held his arm out for her but she did not seem to see it. He looked up to see his love standing at the foot of the bed, unmoving. "Why are you staring at me like that?"

"I am waiting for your command, my king." She kept her words plain, her head still held high despite her attitude.

"My command?" he frowned, for all the movement added onto the headache he’s had from the moment he left her in bed earlier. "Then undress yourself for bed." He was puzzled by her words. Why didn't she rage at him? He could have handled her anger. He could have handled anything but this plastic Barbie act.

"Yes, my king," Y/N answered. Her voice was a monotone.

When he was undressed, Grayson went slowly to the bed. Y/N was already there, the covers to her neck, her eyes staring up at the canopy. He climbed under the covers and moved closer to her. Her skin against his was soothing. He ran his hand down her arm but she did not react like she used to. He leaned over, began to kiss her but her eyes did not close and her lips were unresponsive. She refused to give into him and his desire, but most of all, she would not be trapped into forgiving him for a little pleasure.

"What’s wrong with you?" Grayson demanded an answer, worried she had gotten hurt somehow or that she was distressed.

"Wrong with me, my king?" she said evenly, looking steadily into his eyes. "I don't know what you mean. I am yours to command for I am just a woman and you the great king that clearly knows best. Tell me your wish and I will obey. Do you wish to mate with me? Then I will obey." She moved her thigh against his and it took Grayson a few minutes to realize that she had spread her legs for him.

He stared at her, aghast. He knew crudity was not natural to her. "Y/N," he began, "I wanted to explain it all—"

"Explain, my king? What must you explain to me? Do you explain your actions to the servants? I am yours no less than they are. If that weren’t true, you wouldn’t have lied to me every time I asked if there was something you wanted to tell me – anything and I would have told you everything. If that wasn’t the case, you’d have told me before invading my country and killing my father, the last of my family. Had it been untrue, you would tell me what else you’re hiding from me because I refuse to believe you got the throne for me just for the sake of it. You knew it would push me away from you for I regard my throne as my soul, my people as my heart. You don’t want a wife or a queen, you want a brainless doll that goes along with all you want. Just tell me how I may obey you and I will."

Grayson began to move away from her. He did not like the way Y/N looked at him. At least, when she hated him, there had been life in her eyes. Now there was none. He left the bed. Before he knew what he did, he pulled on the classy doublet he was given to wear for the coronation and his boots, his other clothes thrown over his arm, and left the cold chamber.

Neither of them would sleep that night, chambers set apart by a wall thin enough for him to hear her heartbreaking sobs, but too thick for him to hold her through it. How could he ever change what he did, especially when he did it for her? He didn’t regret it still, because no matter what, he knew her better than she thought. He knew this would be the only way to make sure the plan works.

Come next morning, he was in her chambers before she called anyone to wait on her. She sat at her bay window, one alike the improvised one Grayson had built for her back in Astros. It was the kindest thing he had done for her in the early days of their marriage. He bought her the most beautiful jewels, fed her incredible food, but that couch he had set for her was her favorite thing about that room.

“What can I do to fix this and bridge the distance between us?” Grayson asked, playing the part he had to in order for her to believe him that he was repentant. He needed their separation to be her idea for only then would she be too proud, too stubborn to follow him home.

Turning to face him, she hugged her robe closer to her body, hiding herself from him as if he could see through the cotton.

“I need you to leave. I need you to leave and not come back.” She spoke with tears glistening in her eyes - from hurt, from anger? Grayson couldn’t tell.

“What about us? Our marriage? Our baby?” Grayson questioned, knowing he’s gotten exactly what he wanted but he hoped it wouldn’t be so hard to do for him and so easy for her. He hoped she’d still fight for him to stay, to know why he’s done it behind all the excuses he’s provided. His plan worked a little too well and he felt the cracks in his heart deepen.

“I don’t know.” She shook her head, turning her back on him to hide the pained expression that his words instilled on her face. “Even after all this, you still choose to lie to me. You still hold secrets and I’m done with those. For whatever reason, you’ve decided to ruin us, so I’ll give you what you want. Go.”

She wanted him to say something – anything. She wanted him to fight for her, to say he couldn’t imagine life without her and to fall to his knees and beg forgiveness which she’d give…even after everything, she’d give him the forgiveness and love he seeks.

But there was no grand apology made nor was there any apology made at all. He had nodded to himself, trying to stop himself from breaking apart.

“One more thing. Andrea didn’t die by our hand. Your father organized the peace treaty without ever telling us. He had her killed in order to weaponize you. He’s got it written in his diaries which are left in the safe behind his bed.” Grayson informed her before he remembered what she asked of him. She asked him to leave.

And he did. With a heavy heart he’s left behind in her hands, Grayson walked away from the woman of his dreams, the one love he never thought he’d have to sacrifice.

He collected Ethan and his soldiers, ready to return to Astros to a bed much colder, a kingdom much emptier without her. What’s a crown when your heart suffers?

“He’s still there. In case you want to see him one last time.” Lady Mareen told her, peering out the balcony onto the courtyard where Grayson stood, looking back with a desire to see his dragon bride as if she was the cure for all that ails him.

She had no idea why she allowed him to do it to her over and over again. Each time was a new start, a fresh him, a chance to leave the disappointments behind. Her heart sank and her anger flared.

'Never again', she vowed under her breath. But how many times had she said that before? Too many times. Did she mean it this time? She hoped so. It was time to move on. Before summoning her dressers she recast her face into one of superiority, erasing the crestfallen face that belonged to a girl her age but not to a queen.

“We have other business to attend to. I need to see what daddy most vile did in his reign.”

So as Grayson hoped to catch her image one last time, Y/N had numbed herself into indifference.

In his eyes swam ghosts of regrets and self-loathing, for he could have done a lot of things much better, made his life much easier. But he had already messed everything up and it is easier to have her see him as the bad guy. She’d let him go easier.

“She’s never going to forgive you for this.” Ethan leaned on the car next to his brother, telling him what he already knows.

“It’s the only way I know she’ll be safe. Until we find who is working against us in our own midst, the fucking spy.” Grayson paused, gritting his teeth to calm his anger, the real reason why he had to do what he did.

“If she stayed with me, they would have killed her, especially if they knew she was pregnant with my heir. This way, I know she’s safe. I am just one man, I can’t save her. Without her tyrannical father, she has a whole kingdom to protect her.” Grayson smiled softly to himself, reminded why he had done this in the first place.

While his enemies work to kill him, he had made a safe haven for his wife. He couldn’t trust her father to protect her, not when he had her throne because he had killed her mother. Grayson didn’t believe his wife or his kid would survive him if he sent her home to hide her from this conspiracy. He also didn’t believe she’d leave if he told her what is at stake. She’s far too stubborn for her own good.

Grayson had set fire to his entire world, not allowing a single flame to touch her.

Race vs the hot RA

Or the couple times race pined after the hot RA and the time the hot RA pined back

Hi! im back at school after thanksgiving break, so i decided to write some college fluff. like for real guys. its j us t fluff

“This is BULLSHIT.”

Race takes out an earbud and stares, mildly alarmed, at the bathroom door of their suite. Abruptly, the shower shuts off, despite having been on for all of thirty seconds and a moment later, Spot emerges with a towel wrapped around his waist, shivering hard enough to rival a chihuahua left out in front of a grocery store in the rain. He looks angry, scowling hard enough to bare his teeth and eyes narrowed in a way that would probably be murderous if he didn’t also look entirely pathetic.

Race quirks an amused eyebrow, “Everything okay?”

“No,” Spot growls, “there’s no fucking hot water.”

Race frowns, “Like, none?”

“Yes, Race,” Now Race can see the goosebumps that line Spot’s arms and notes with faint concern that his lips look a little blue, “None. Like, it’s fucking Antarctica in that fucking shower. I feel like Steve Rogers after he crashed that fucking plane into the Arctic.”

“Shit, that’s not good.”

Spot scoffs, giving him a ‘no shit’ look and crosses to his drawer to pull out a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

“Maybe too many people are using the showers?” Race suggests, “and like, maybe the hot water got all used up. That happens sometimes at home.”

“Don’t think it works like that,” Spot says, padding back towards the bathroom, “M’pretty sure this place operates more like a hotel, so lack of hot water shouldn’t be an issue. Can you go let the RA know something’s wrong with the plumbing?”

Race’s stomach drops, face coloring a bit at the thought of talking to Albert, their engineering SLO’s attractive resident’s assistant. Like Race and Spot, he’s a junior, but this was Race’s first year living in the engineering housing, so he hadn’t seen him around before. Which was weird considering they should have at least had a freshman seminar together or something of the sort.

But nope. On upperclassmen move in day, Race was completely blindsided by the pretty redhead coming around to the dorms, introducing himself with a disarmingly charming smile and an overly peppy, “If you ever need anything, I’m in 311b!”

Which was unfair, really, because naturally, Race had to see Albert fairly often at various floor events and as smooth as he’d like to believe he is, Albert made him basically incoherent.

And Spot knows that.

So, fuck Spot.

“Can’t you go tell him?” Race calls, trying not to sound pathetic but missing that mark by miles.

“No!” Spot shouts back, still sounding irritated, “I got class soon, dude, stop being a pussy and go!”

Race groans, steeling himself for a moment before pushing himself up from his desk and crossing towards the door, stopping at the bathroom to yell a quick, “I hate you!” at Spot before exiting and ambling down the hall towards Albert’s single. The sign outside Albert’s door says that he’s on duty, so he knocks twice and bounces on his toes while he waits, stomach swooping when he hears a, “Just a sec!” from inside the room.

A second later, Albert opens the door, looking relaxed in a pair of running shorts and long sleeved shirt, feet tucked into a fluffy pair of moccasins. The outfit is stupid and entirely adorable and Race has to forcably log his brain back online. By the time he’s gotten a grip on himself, he realizes that Albert was saying something and is now looking at him with a mildly concerned and expectant smile on his face.

“Shit, sorry,” Race stammers, “What?”

The easy smile doesn’t drop, but an almost knowing glint flashes through Albert’s eyes, “I just asked what’s up. Everything okay?”

“Oh,” Race feels himself blush, “Yeah, no, the hot water’s just fucked in our bathroom. Thought I should let you know.”

“Ah, fuck,” Even disgruntled, Albert looks easy-going. It’s unfair really. For someone majoring in astrophysics, Albert always look entirely too relaxed, “Yeah, Mush came to me earlier about that. I called in a ‘fix-it’ and they said someone should be coming to look at it around 5 o’clock. Sorry, though. I know cold showers are fucking awful.”

“Oh, it’s okay,” Race says, “Spot was the one who got the brunt of it, not me.”

“Bet he was thrilled,” Albert says, “Kid’s a ray of sunshine.”

Albert even manages to make biting sarcasm sound entirely welcome. Race isn’t convinced he doesn’t have super powers or something.

“Yeah, he was super chill about it,” Race plays along, “Kindly asked me to let you know and everything.”

“Mhm, I’m sure.”

There’s a small lapse of silence and Race starts to feel the nerves in his stomach come back, suddenly overwhelmed again by Albert’s alluring nature. He’s about to turn and leave when Albert opens his door wider.

“You wanna come in for a bit?” He asks, “Was just making some ramen if you’re interested.”

“Oh,” Race’s heart soars for a second before dropping again, “Fuck, I’d love to, but I can’t,” Albert’s face falls a fraction and Race tries not to read too deep into that, “I have to finish studying for that astro 212 exam.”

Albert lights up again, “Oh! I gotta study for that, too. We can study together? If you want, I mean. Like, you totally don’t have to if you, like, study better alone or something, I just thought it might be fun to-”

“Albert,” Race cuts him off, feeling oddly elated to see Albert flustered for once, “No, that’s perfect. I’d love to eat ramen and study with you, just give me a minute to go grab my notes.”

“Sweet!” Albert says, smiling again, “I’ll keep my door open, so just come on in whenever!”

Race gives him a thumbs up and tries not to run back to his room. Once he’s inside, it’s a mad dash to grab his things, cursing as he drops his graphing calculator twice. He doesn’t even notice Spot on the floor, tying his shoes, until he laughs.

“Got a hot study date?” He quips.

“No,” Race says, “Shut up. RAs aren’t technically allowed to date residents.”

Spot holds up his hands in the universal sign of surrender, “Rules can be bent.”

Race rolls his eyes, rushing back out of the room.

Race fucking hates calculus. Well, actually, that’s a lie. He fucking loves calculus. Numbers have always made sense to him, theorems and equations melding into one beautiful web of logic that always pulled him into a comfortable rhythm. But right now, surface integrals were fucking him in the ass.

Which is why he’s holed up in the library on a Sunday morning, staving off a wicked hangover and trying not to vomit as he stares dejectedly at his textbook, praying that the words on the page will magically make sense. Sighing probably too dramatically, he pulls his notebook towards himself and copies down another problem, working through it at a snail’s pace before checking the answer in the back of the book…

...And it’s wrong. Again. Fuck.

He groans, dropping his head down and thumping it a few times against the table. It makes his head hurt worse, so he stops, inwardly reviewing all the ways he’s a fucking dumbass who shouldn’t be in college, because college is hard.

And fuck multivariable calculus.

Just kidding, sorry, Race thinks, I love you, multivar.

“Doing okay?”

Race looks up too fast, groaning again at the movement. Albert’s hovering across the table from him, backpack slung on his back and iced coffee in hand, an amused smirk resting on his face. He looks entirely too awake for a 10 am on a Sunday, but then again he wasn’t drinking last night.

“Depends,” Race answers, apparently too hungover to be too affected by Albert’s presence, “Are surface integrals really worth my sweat and tears?”

“For our major, yes,” Albert says, “Mind if I sit?”

Race waves him off, dropping his head back onto the table, “Go ahead. What’re you doing up so early?”

“Same as you it seems,” Race can hear him taking out his books, “Guess we all got a little behind on calc homework.”

“Guess so,” Race forces himself to sit back up, “I don’t get it.”

“What don’t you get?”

“Any of it,” Race feels his stress start to peak, “I haven’t gotten a single fucking problem right and I’ve been here since fucking 8 and really, I don’t know why I did that to myself, ‘cause I was up ‘til god knows when last night dri-” He cuts off, eyeing Albert warily.

Albert shakes his head, “It’s okay, call me a bad RA, but as long as you all are being safe with it and there are no complaints, do what you want.”

Race nods, “Well, then, yeah. So, I was up ‘til god knows when and now I’m hungover, but I gotta spend more time on this fucking class so I don’t fail this unit, because I’ve never failed a unit of math before and I don’t wanna start now, because then I’ll fail everything and fail out of college and-”

“Whoa,” Albert reaches across the table and places a hand on Race’s forearm, “Slow down, dude, breathe,” he waits for Race to take a deep breath, “It’s going to be alright, man. Everyone’s got a bad unit, doesn’t mean you’re gonna fail it all. Just gotta make a game plan. I’m decent at this stuff if you want some help? I can’t say I’m as good as a TA or something might be, but I can help you get this assignment done.”

Race takes another deep breath, trying not to focus on Albert’s lingering grip on his arm. Albert seems to come back to himself though, because he clears his throat, coloring a little as he squeezes Race’s arm and lets go.

“Sorry,” Race says sheepishly, “Didn’t mean to lose it there.”

“Happens to the best of us.”

And there’s Albert again, putting Race at ease with the tone of his voice alone. Fucking magic, Race swears.

Maybe it’s an RA thing. They all seem to have that scarily open demeanor. Race could never.

“You don’t gotta help me, man,” Race says, “I’d feel bad making you-”

“Don’t,” Albert says, smiling. Jeez, does he ever stop smiling? “You’re not making me do anything, I offered. Plus, I gotta get this shit done, too. We’d really just be doing it together. It’s better practice to go in depth anyway.”

A swell of admiration grips Race and he has to look back down at his notebook to keep from doing something stupid like kiss Albert or something.

“C’mon,” Albert prompts lightly, scooching so he’s next to Race instead of across from him and knocking their knees together. Race tries not to lean into the touch, “What’s the first problem? 34?”

They work through the math at a steady pace, and with Albert’s instruction (which lacks a certain condescending air that Spot always gets when he tries to help Race out), Race starts to understand the content better. He’ll still need to go to office hours, probably, but for the moment, he feels less panicked.

By the time they’re finished, their bodies are pressed together from shoulder to thigh, both of them hunched over their work only inches apart. Race tries not to stare, but he can’t help but notice the way Albert bites his lip and narrows his eyes when he’s focused. Even with his guard down, he’s magnetic- effortlessly charming. He must feel Race looking, because he glances up from where he’s completing the final problem. They’re very close- too close, really and Race can see him flick his gaze down to his lips for a second before locking on his eyes. In his peripheral, Race can see his ears color. He’s a blusher, Race has come to realize. It’s kind of precious.

“Thanks,” Race says, unable to stand the growing tension.

Albert blinks a couple times, eyes clearing, “Yeah, no prob.”

“Like, really, thanks. I get it more now and I’m infinitely less stressed.”

Albert grins, “I’m really glad.”

It’s quiet for another second, then Race shifts, glancing at his watch and realizing he’s done with homework and it’s not even 1:00 pm yet.

“Shit, what time is it,” Albert asks, leaning in again to look at Race’s watch, “Fuck, I have duty in a half hour, I gotta go.”

Race tries not to feel disappointed at the prospect of Albert leaving, “Yeah, I might try to go back to sleep to be honest.”

Albert laughs, “Good plan, drink water.”

“Will do.”

They pack up in silence and walk out of the library, pausing again when they get back to their hall.

“Obviously fuck math, but I had fun hanging out with you,” Albert says.

Race feels his heartbeat pick up, “I had fun too.”

There’s another pause, this time a little more loaded, then Albert claps him on the shoulder, “Catch those Zs, bro, I’ll see you around.”

“See you.” Race says, waving as Albert begins to head down the hall.

“Don’t forget to eat!”

“I won’t.”

Albert turns around, fixing him with a playfully serious glare, “Promise me, Higgins. Can’t have any residents sick if I have something to do with it.”

Race laughs, “I promise.”

“Good,” Albert winks and Race feels himself blush down to his chest.

“Albert?”

The situation feels oddly flipped when Race walks into Panera to find Albert slumped at a table, head in his hands and knee bouncing rapidly under the table. It’s a Tuesday afternoon and Race figured he’d grab his weekly cup of broccoli cheddar soup before english.

Albert lifts his head from his hands and Race feels his concern grow when he notices the red that rims his eyes. He’s only ever seen Albert cool and collected, but he supposes even freakishly bubbly people have bad days, too.

“Hey, Race,” Albert tries to smile at him, but it falls short, “What’s up? You okay?”

“I’m good,” Race says, “Just grabbing a bite. What about you? Are you okay?”

Albert deflates a little, dropping his eyes down to his laptop, “I’m alright.”

“You sure?” Race ventures. Fuck it, he thinks and sits down, “You’re looking a little stressed. Is something up?”

He sincerely hopes he isn’t pushing boundaries here, but Albert looks like he needs a friend right now. Or maybe a shot of really strong tequila. Or both.

Albert shrugs, letting out a breath. It sounds shaky and shallow. He fixes Race with a self-deprecating smile.

“Shouldn’t this be the other way around?”

“Hey, man, just because you’re an RA doesn’t mean you can’t ask for help or some bullshit. I’m not gonna make you talk to me or anything, that would be shitty, but I’m here for you and so’s everyone else on the floor. If something’s bothering you, then it’s valid and you deserve support.”

Albert has such a starkly vulnerable look in his eyes that Race almost has to look away. The corners of his lips are turned down and his eyes are wide and almost pleading and he looks so goddamn defeated and beautiful at the same time and Race really wants to hug him.

Albert’s jaw shifts and he turns his gaze down towards his hands. His voice cracks a bit when he says, “I’m technically here on a hockey scholarship, right?” Race nods and Albert continues, “And our team is losing national ranking, ‘cause our new coach fucking sucks, so I might lose aspects of that scholarship and my parents can’t pay for my tuition on their own and-” he stops, shaking his head, “I’m scared, I think. I don’t wanna have to drop out or something.”

Race takes a moment to mull over a good response and reaches across the table, hoping he’s been reading their interactions correctly as he places a hand over Albert’s. To his relief (and delight) Albert flips his hand so their fingers are laced together.

Race squeezes it encouragingly, “I can’t promise you that everything will be alright and I can’t make you false reassurances, but I bet if you talked to the financial aid office, they could help you figure out a plan? But throughout all of this, I’m going to be here for you, alright? Anything you need, just let me know. If that’s a place to talk shit out, I gotchu, but I’m also here if you just need a friend. I’m here for you, Al.”

Albert’s looking at him again, that same vulnerable look on his face, but something else is there a well. Something softer underlying the worry lines on his face.

“Next semester I’m not going to be an RA anymore.” He blurts.

Race blinks, “Alright?”

Albert huffs out a laugh, “Sorry, I mean like,” he shakes himself, starting over, “I like you, Race.”

Race’s stomach jolts, “Wait, really?”

“Yeah,” Albert says slowly. They’re hands are still linked together and Race can feel Albert’s hand sweating. Or maybe that’s his. Fuck, they both seem keyed up.

“Fuck, I mean, Albert, I like you too. Have since the beginning of the semester,” Race knows he’s talking too fast, but the smile on Albert’s face tells him it doesn’t matter.

“Yeah?” And Albert looks so damn appeased that Race laughs.

“Yeah.”

“So, if I’m not an RA next semester, then we could…”

“You tryna ask me out, Dasilva?” Race asks, a teasing lilt to his tone.

“Eventually, yes I am,” Albert says.

On a whim, Race lifts Albert’s hand to his lips, kissing the knuckles.

“After Winter break, I’m taking you to that thai place in town.”

Albert’s smile takes on a genuinity that Race hasn’t seen before, “I’d like that.”

A month later...

“Feels good to actually be able to, like, do this shit publicly.”

Race leans in, pressing a kiss to Albert’s chin. They’re in the library, trying to get ahead of their physics homework before it picks up too much. Technically, they’d gotten together after admitting to liking each other last semester, but they weren’t allowed to have a relationship until Albert was out of his RA position.

“Yeah, that was like some star crossed lovers bullshit,” Albert laughs, “Hiding you in my dorm room and stealing kisses in dark hallways.”

“How romantic,” Race teases.

“I know.”

They kiss for real, both leaning into it. Race feels Albert grip his arm right above his elbow, rubbing his thumb in circles around his bicep. In turn, he brushes Albert’s hair behind his ears, tilting his jaw to deepen the kiss.

They pull apart and lean their foreheads together, smiling.

“I’m thinking about becoming an RA next semester,” Race murmurs.

Albert pulls back, looking alarmed until he sees the smirk on Race’s face, “you ass, I actually believed you!”

“Pfft, I wouldn’t do that when we just got this,” Race says, pulling Albert back in and kissing him again, “I like you too much.”

Albert smiles, giddy and exultant, “I like you, too, I think.”

“You think?”

“I know, I think.”

Race swats him, “Be serious and love me.”

They both freeze, the weight of the words they have yet to actually say suddenly hanging in the air.

Albert sobers up, taking Race’s hand, “I do love you. A lot, actually.”

And really, that’s unfair, because sometimes Race still gets so goddamn enamored by Albert and he can’t really believe he actually likes him back and he can feel his face flushing and oh god, he’s not going to revert back to incoherence is he? Oh god-

“Don’t have an aneurysm,” Albert says, kissing his nose, “I love you. That’s all.”

When Race smiles, it feels too big for his face, “I love you, too.”

My Decade in Books Tag

@lexi-rose-studyblr tagged me for this--thanks!!

The rules: respond to the prompt “my decade in books” however you want, & then tag some ppl! I chose some of my favorites from that year along with a brief description of what I was doing (which is different than what the person who tagged me did). You can do that or make up your own response

I had to do something I never do to make this post: use Tumblr on my computer. I forgot what it looks like in a browser instead of mobile--it’s weird

Lucky for me, I joined Goodreads in 2009, although I didn’t use it regularly until 2015. So I had some help to remember, but let’s just say I left a lot of blanks for myself

2010: This was the end of my sophomore and start of junior year in high school, and because of the coursework at the time, I still had the ability to read in every spare moment. I read a lot of the Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer, a lot of e.e. cummings, and Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

2011: Junior-senior year of high school, and I was so concerned with first AP tests and then college applications, I know goodreads snuck off my radar a lot. I finally read Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, which was one of my grandpa’s favorite books (he died in 2003), and many other classics as I prepped for my AP Lit test. I actually enjoyed many of the ones I read, but I no longer remember which ones I read from the 2010-2012 period, so I thought I’d mention a couple of them here: The Great Gatsby, Cry the Beloved Country, Go Tell it On the Mountain, Sons and Lovers, and Pride and Prejudice

2012: Senior year of high school and starting my freshman year of college. I really had no idea how much my life was about to change--I regularly stay in touch with only a tiny handful of my friends from high school now, which is weird. I do remember, though, in prep for my AP Lit test, my teacher gave us a list of prompts from previous years, and I made it my mission to find a way to use Harry Potter for all of them. I ended up writing the actual test essay on the Scottish Play--which I dearly love--but it was fun anyway. I again have a mostly empty goodreads, but I really liked The Macho Paradox by Jackson Katz and The Books of Bayern by Shannon Hale

2013: Ending my freshman year and starting my sophomore year of college, I started dating my now-husband, and I used goodreads much less than before. Of the few books I included on goodreads, I enjoyed Deadly Persuasion by Jean Kilbourne and The Cry of the Icemark by Stuart Hill, which was a reread (and still one of my favorite books ever).

2014: This year were some of my hardest physics classes in undergrad, so I almost never used goodreads, which means my memory of what I read is limited. I did enjoy A Confusion of Princes by Garth Nix, but that’s the only rating I left

2015: Junior-senior year of undergrad, when I realized I didn’t want to go to astro grad school, but wanted to be involved in science education somehow. Some of my favorite books were: The Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo (and so began my love for Queen Leigh), the Alex and Ada comic book trilogy, Nimona by Noelle Stevenson, the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness, Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins, Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, When Christ and His Saints Slept by Sharon Kay Penman, Ash by Malinda Lo, Seraphina by Rachel Hartman, 1421 by Gavin Menzies, and House of Ivy and Sorrow by Natalie Whipple

2016: I graduated with my undergrad degrees, and while I waited to be able to apply for the next round of grad school openings, I worked part-time at a library--so, so many good books were found that way. We adopted our sweet fur babies that year. Books I loved included: The Imposter Queen by Sarah Fine, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, Heartless by Marissa Meyer, When the Moon Was Ours by Anne-Marie McLemore, The Supernatural Enhancements by Edgar Cantero, The Paper Magician trilogy by Charlie N. Holmberg, Everything Leads To You by Nina LaCour, The Princess Saves Herself In This One by Amanda Lovelace, Isabella: The Warrior Queen by Kirstin Downey, and a variety of girl-lead superhero comic books for my women’s and gender studies senior thesis

2017: I started grad school that fall, but spend the first half of the year still working at the library, so I read a whole lot. It was also the year my now-husband proposed. Highlights include: Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley, Wild Beauty by Anne-Marie McLemore, Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popovic, A Caribbean Mystery by Agatha Christie, To Be Or Not To Be by Ryan North, Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Radium Girls by Kate Moore, Young and Damned and Fair by Gareth Russell, The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco, Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde, and The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

2018: I finished my first year and started my second year of grad school, getting married smack dab in the middle of my summer term. The time for reading drastically went down, but I managed to read way more than expected. 2019: This was a Hell Year for me, with my migraines reaching new heights, and I spent a lot of time listening to audiobooks because it was the only thing I could do. Some books I loved last year were: Beyond the Hundred Kingdoms by Rod Espinosa (The Courageous Princess #1), Sera and the Royal Stars #1-5, Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, Over the Top by Jonathan van Ness, At Bertram’s Hotel by Agatha Christie, Her Royal Spyness by Rhys Bowen, Code Girls by Liza Mundy, In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan, and god, so many more, so I’ll leave it there because I could go on for a long time (2019 was a good year for books for me because I stuck by my policy of putting down books I wasn’t enjoying, even if it was just because I wasn’t feeling them at that moment)
