Please don't fall for it. Even if your PC tells you you are not eligible for Windows 11—you can download, install and run it just fine. And you should once WIN 10 isn't continued anymore.

The upgrade is not any harder than if Microsoft wasn't such a bitch, and you most definitely do not need a new end device simply because they would like you to buy one.

I am testing it on an 8-year-old "throwaway notebook" rn (trust is good, control is better), that is not eligible for the update based on their own claims and I'm having absolutely no issues whatsoever.

theoretically yes but practically no, lol... ive been entertaining the idea of "opening commissions" for years but the planets rarely align for me to do so*.

i also have that disease where i can only do 0% or 120% amounts of effort, with no inbetween. the former is not worth it for customers and the latter is not worth it for me. alas

*tbh i guess you could just ask and we can work something out. the last time i did a commission someone asked me about it and then waited a whole year for me to finally have a window of time appear to work on it. so. thats the type of inconvenient geological time scale i function on

This week I’m asking about the writing process – I’m curious to see how people do it.

Do you refer to anything as you write? E.g. pictures, calendars for the timeline, maps to measure travelling distance? Basically, what references, if any, do you keep on your desk/always open in another window while writing?

Generally I just rely on my imagination and memory when I am writing and/or editing.

Every once in a while if I need to I'll look something up, but as for references that I keep on hand all the time, there aren't any. Because of the way that I write - which is always doing a new draft in a new document - and the fact that I use a dictation program, which means I need a separate window to dictate into before I can transfer the words those new documents, I already have a lot of things open on my desktop and I really don't need anything else cluttering up the area.

Of course, for the Anglish novel I do keep the etymology website and the Anglish wordbook open ^__^

all versions of windows are a hodge podge of previous versions of windows. you can see the windows 95 theme and Luna if you press alt+enter on spore. you can play heretic 2. you can even probably run some ancient version of excel as long as it's 32 bit. you can really run most programs as long as they're 32 bit

i'm becoming increasingly frustrated with the many small problems of pop os along with my partitions specifically

with that, not being able to boot into windows anyway, and the fact that the partition is only like 1/5 of my drive i think then ext time i have a few free days i might just archive the whole drive again and then wipe everything and fresh install a new distro

Please help me find a decent laptop! My current one is on its last legs and i need a new one as soon as possible! The budget is £400, but i can stretch it to £500 maximum

RAM has to be 16GB minimum, SSD storage has to be 512GB minimum. I dont really care about the Processor, but Intel i5 or above would be nice.

It has to run Windows 11 and can't have one of those screens where the colour distorts at the wrong angle! I think they're called Twisted Nematic LCD screens? I plan to use it for a lot of things, including art projects, so the colours have to be good!

I'm pretty good with software but know very little about hardware and reliable brands. I need something that's not going to fall apart after a year or two!

Reddit has not been much help. I put up a post, but no one has responded yet, and posts similar to mine are full of debates instead of answers.

Linux is wonderful in many ways and it's made huge leaps forward in gaming, BUT beware that games will sometimes not run properly.

Maybe that manifests as an FPS-drop, maybe it means that none of your usual plugins/mods work, maybe your controller isn't linux-compatible.

Having said that, sometimes a game will run faster on linux, thanks to less bloatware flying around in the background. And again, they've come a long way with this kind of stuff since last I had a gaming-computer with linux installed (seven years ago now).

BUT, before you cheerfully rewrite all of your harddrives and lock yourself out of all of your precious video-games? Go on a reddit-tour asking around for the video-games that you actually care about, and seeing what linux-users have to say about how you should be approaching that.

Oh I'm sorry C: you've only got 6GB free? Only six fucking gig? We used to boot the OS off fucking floppy drives but I'm so so sorry that six entire gigabytes of free space isn't enough for you you poor starving thing. You've been experiencing worse and worse memory issues for months and now you're freezing and crashing every few minutes because why, you just can't make 6 gig work? Grow the fuck up.
