Hi! Hope you are well. I wanted to ask about Cap comics mainly Steve Rogers. My son wants to read Cap comics but we don’t know where to start. He doesn’t want to read Spencer’s run. Any suggestions?

My starter rec for pretty much everyone is the miniseries Captain America: Man Out of Time. It’s a modern version of Steve’s origin story that shows him being found by the Avengers and getting used to the present. So that way you’ll get an idea of who Steve is and where he came from while still reading modern comics. (I mean, I like the original comics too. But they can be very problematic at times and they’re kind of an acquired taste.)

Other than that, it depends what you like, really. Mark Waid, who wrote Man Out of Time, also had two (two-ish? three?) runs on Captain America, and honestly the way he writes Cap is my favorite and basically the way I see Steve; he gives Steve an earnestness that could be corny but isn’t, and I feel like he does a really good job conveying what’s so inspiring about Steve. Like, you see why people want to follow this guy. Waid’s first Cap run was in the mid-late 90s, at the tail end of volume 1, #444-454, and you can read it currently in print in the Epic Collection called Man Without A Country. He continued to write Cap for the first 23 issues of volume 3; I own it in omnibus (which includes the vol 1 issues and an additional miniseries called Sentinel of Liberty) but the individual arcs are (or at least were) available in trade as To Serve And Protect, American Nightmare, Red Glare, and Land of the Free.

If you enjoy Waid’s writing but like him better with more modern art, he had a very short recent run (technically vol 1 as this was when everything renumbered very briefly). It’s the run right after Spencer’s but I promise you can read it without reading (or liking) Secret Empire. It’s collected in two trades, Home of the Brave and Promised Land, though I’d only recommend the first one because Promised Land... doesn’t really have Steve in it. The first one (which is the Waid/Samnee run) does have Cap #700, which is probably my most favorite recent Cap issue that I’ve read in... I dunno, years? It’s good. So, yeah, definitely check out Home of the Brave.

Ta-Nehisi Coates’ current Cap run (vol 9) is also a very solid and interesting read, with a lot of big and heavy themes, but it has some pacing issues and if you’re specifically looking to avoid any hints of Secret Empire you probably want to avoid it because it’s very much about what people think of Steve (and what Steve thinks of himself) in the wake of Secret Empire. It is, however, probably my second favorite current comic I’m reading, so there’s that. (The first is Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.)

Coates’ run is pretty clearly influenced by Ed Brubaker’s Cap run (vol 5), which I know a lot of people rate as their favorite Cap run, but Brubaker’s Steve is a little too grim and joyless for me. Also, uh, Steve dies in #25 and after that it’s all BuckyCap, so if you’re looking for a run where Steve is Captain America it mostly isn’t this one. But a lot of people really love it!

There are also a lot of classic Cap stories and runs that are worth reading! I think if I had to recommend just one arc to start with I’d probably pick the Stern/Byrne run from the early 80s (#247-255), collected in an old trade called War & Remembrance, currently in an Epic Collection called Dawn’s Early Light. This is from the era when Steve has just moved to Brooklyn Heights and is starting to be a commercial artist (although not a comic book artist; that’s slightly later). It features the first appearance of Bernie Rosenthal! It has one of my favorite Batroc the Leaper stories. And it has #250, where people want Steve to run for president and Steve’s response is... well, it’s very Captain America.

I hope that gives you somewhere to start!

I am sorry you are feeling the heat of the discourse on Steve's arc in Endgame. I hope it dies down quickly. I am content with all of Endgame. I saw it for a third time today (this was not my intention - my husband kind of begged me to go since he'd only seen it once and wanted to see it again). I really liked it all. I know a lot of my fandom friends (especially the comic book friends) despise it. That's ok. 616 Steve & MCU Steve are not the same. So hate it for 616 but not for MCU. Good day!

I’m not gonna lie to you, I don’t like the ending at all. I’ve managed to start coming to terms with it based on the notion that it’s an alternate timeline, but if somehow word gets out that it’s not and that older!Steve was just hanging out in the entire MCU in the shadows, I... Well, I’ll do nothing except maybe cry a lot, but it would be really hurtful.

What does bother me is what I expressed in that post - how people are so quick and eager to bash Steve, to tear him down, to act like one/two minutes of a decision they disagree with somehow erases every single wonderful thing about his character from the past movies. This is what upsets me the most, how little fandom values Steve for him and not just as a boyfriend to the woobie of their choice. It’s nothing new, I’ve complained about it many times on this blog before, and I knew it would happen regardless of the ending the directors decided to give him. It’s just... frustrating.

I will say that I don’t think disliking this ending has anything to do with impressions coming from the comics. Well, maybe it does for a lot of people, but I personally have no strong attachment to 616 Steve (well, at least not anymore than I have for any Steve in any verse other than the movies). My Steve, the Steve I love and admire, the Steve that helped me go through a pretty fucking rough phase of my life on the past year, is MCU Steve, and it will always be MCU Steve. And... I still strongly dislike this ending, even if I’m doing my best to move on and accept it.

All in all, I think the discourse will keep going, especially after more people watch the movie and the directors are allowed to publically comment on their choices. But I also think anti-Steve discourse, in general, is largely a fandom thing - the general audience loves Steve, doesn’t think too deeply about timeline issues or narrative arcs, and most of them are just happy to see him getting a chance to rest and be happy. The movie is being super well-received, it will have one of the greatest box offices of all time, and MCU Steve’s legacy will be a positive one, whether the MCU fandom likes it or not.

Yay! One little victory at a time

Yes! Which is good because my other experiment today was not so much a success. 

I wanted to see if I could drive yet. So I went around the block. And I made it okay but I was extremely uneasy the whole time. It’s very scary to know that at any moment something could happen where my choices are 1) slow reaction and less manueverability with only my left hand on the wheel or 2) instinctively reach for the wheel with my right hand and seriously hurt myself.

Steve Tony September - what's your favorite trope to READ for Stony? And how long have you been in the fandom?

Right now, my favorite trope to read is old-school “Aliens Made Them Do It,” It’s all about that escalating tension between Steve and Tony – why us, how do we get out of it (even though secretly we want this), does this mean anything after? 

I’ll generally read anything “Soulmate” – although I prefer more traditional forms of the trope – words, pictures, etc. Again all about the tension and reluctance to give in or believe. I’m at heart a big ol’ romantic softie.

I’ve been in the fandom since 2013. I hurt my arm pretty severely and was unable to embroider for a couple of months. I couldn’t stand watching tv any longer so I asked my longtime friend about AO3 and if she had any recs about this Steve/Tony thing. And that’s where it all began!

1. Is there anything you regret writing?

Not really! The closest I get to is Dear J, which is a fic of mine I don’t like, but I wouldn’t say I regret writing it, exactly. I just… don’t think it’s very good, and the main reason I haven’t deleted it is because I needed it as a bingo fill to reach my blackout for Happy Steve Bingo.

2. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of and explain why you like it.

I really, really like Anytime, which is a short little smutty thing that didn’t do as well compared to some of my other stuff. Still, I really like it. I think it’s funny, sweet and it gives me fuzzy, warm feelings. It’s a fic I reread often when I need to cheer myself up.

3. What’s your most popular fanfiction?

Five Seconds, aka the fic I wrote to deal with my post-Endgame pain. In general I’m pretty proud of it, though I do think timing was the main reason it was such a success - I think it was one of the first stony fix-its posted after the movie, if not the first, which definitely helped.

There hasn’t been any change to the draft submission process for the BB, and you can find all the guidelines in our main post here.

Submitted drafts should be about 80% complete and at least 20K of the required 25K word count. They must include an outlined ending. Drafts can have skeleton scenes, parts that still exist in outline form, or scenes that are not more than a sentence in your outline as a placeholder, but the majority of your draft needs to be prose.
