Writeblr intro
Last Updated: Mar 2024 So, I realised I hadn't actually written one of these, and I had to fix it!
Name: Magpie, or Shelle, or Michelle.
Pronouns: she/her or xe/xer/xis.
Who: both a writer and an editor!
The Writing: I’ve been publishing since 2011, and I have a bunch of free and paid anthologies I’ve organized, but these are my most important/favourite works.
Tumblr media
Except for The Meaning Wars series, all of my books are set in Canada!
The Meaning Wars (complete; And The Stars Will Sing, The Stolen: Two Short Stories, The Meaning Wars, Poe’s Outlaws, A Jade’s Trick, The Meaning Wars Complete Omnibus)
Similar to: Becky Chambers’ A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and Ruthanna Emrys’ A Half-Built Garden
Vibes: Space opera! Found family! Mature (30s) protagonists! Best friends! Sapphic and queer m/f romance elements! Friendly space raptors! Space pirates! A beach episode! Antifascism! Colonization (and inequality issues)! Fighting stuff with democracy and direct action!
The Underlighters (Book 1 of The Nightmare Cycle; Book 2, Monsters and Fools, is complete and in edits. Book 3, The Foundling City, is a current WIP!)
Similar to: Jean DuPrau’s The City of Ember, Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, the Fallout series
Vibes: Coming of age/new adult themes. Spooky monsters. Post-apocalyptic. The importance and warmth of community. Friendship. Struggling with teen problems. Polyamory. Nightmares. Mental health issues. Trauma. Hope. Recycling.
After The Garden (Book 1 of the Memory Bearers Saga; Book 2, Within the Tempest, is also one of my WIPs)
Similar to: Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, The Wachowski sisters’ Sense-8, the Fallout series
Vibes: Found family. Gentle romance. Polyamory (m/f/m). Superpowers without superheroes. Sinister cults and religious extremism. Reincarnation. An alternate future. Adorable giant spiders. Silk-weaving and fiber arts. Post-collapse societal reorganization and politics.
The Loved, The Lost, The Dreaming: A Horror Anthology includes an alternate-ending version of The Underlighters, the novella A Shot of Vodka, and a dozen or so genre-crossing short stories. All of them have spooky elements.
Similar to: Neil Gaiman’s Smoke and Mirrors, Roald Dahl’s Skin and Other Stories (this is not an endorsement of antisemite Roald Dahl; I am antifascist)
Vibes: Underground living. Spooky dolls. Abandoned houses. Queerness. Sinister fey. Nightmares. Lovecraftian eeriness. Here be monsters.
Bad Things That Happen To Girls (Book 1 of the Memory Bearers Saga; Book 2, Within the Tempest, is also one of my WIPs) Possibly my most underrated work, this New Adultish story is a standalone novella about trauma and what happens when life breaks down.
Similar to: Emily Danforth’sThe Miseducation of Cameron Post and Miriam Toews’ A Complicated Kindness
Vibes: Broken family. Abusive mother. Being queer in a small city. Religious trauma. Forbidden cross-cultural love. Teen heartbreak. Coming-of-age. Sisters.
The Hell series (Unpublished WIPs; Dark as Hell, Uncharted Hell, Hope in Hell)
Similar to: Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, Andrej Sapkowski’s The Witcher series
Vibes: Grumpy/sunshine romance! Mature protagonists! Queer f/m romance! Thriller elements! Immortal pirate! Marxist/anti-billionaire politics—with a billionaire protag! Lovecraftian ocean horror! Historical fantasy elements! Lots and lots of boat stuff!
Prairie Weather Trilogy (Unpublished but complete, in submission; Chinook Phase, Tornado Warning, Brushfire)
Similar to: Douglas Couplands’ Jpod,Nick Sagan’s Idlewild trilogy (without the sci fi stuff), Love Actually, Heartstoppers
Vibes: Aggressively Canadian! Found family! Cozy academia! University! Set in the early 2010s! Queer romance! Ensemble cast! Aggressively queer, diverse, and inclusive! Coming-of-Age/New Adult issues! Friendship! Drama! Sex work-positivity!
The Editing: I've been a professional freelance editor since 2013, with Top-Rated status on Upwork (a freelancing website) and several hundred books under my belt. (I don't know how many things I've worked on at this point. I've lost count!) Primarily into sci fi, fantasy, horror, and literature (and associated subgenres); enthusiastic about #ownvoices and all kinds of diversity/marginalised representation in fiction.
You don’t have to go through Upwork unless you want to; DM me if you’re looking for an editor who’s knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and gentle. I’m also budget-friendly!
Tumblr media
Age: in my 30s.
Queer?: yes. Also poly! Happily married to two people; also have a girlfriend. Not looking for more partners.
Disabled?: yes.

Game Patch is live!
I've sent HG the updated files, and it’s ready! As requested, I'll leave the patch notes under the cut.
With this, I’m truly done with Book One. Except for typo and bug reports, I won't be adding any more content, or spending more time and energy thinking about it. It is time to set my eyes ahead once and for all.
For Book Two is an even taller mountain.
Game Patch Notes:
Fixed typos and grammatical mistakes.
Fixed Alessa's relationship page bug.
Fixed the error where it wasn't acknowledged the MC already knew of the Ministry Building in the Market and the Cathedral paths.
Fixed Juturna's coin continuity errors.
Fixed the MC forgetting Aurelius' name at the Gates.
Fixed the MC not remembering seeing Neia's initial at the Gates.
Fixed Hadrian's cross being silver in Chapter One.
Fixed the siren continuity error.
Changed the description of Lance's coin box at the square.
Added Lance's crossbow.
Tweaked the Devil's guardian dialogue to make it clearer what she means when she calls you "one of us."
Added a small exposition about Latin in Chapter 1.
Changed the description of the Devil's Bridge in Chapter 3.
Added the Pirate to the relationship panel.
Adjusted Hadrian and Alessa's relationship descriptors.
If the MC has high enough Combat, they're now able to hurt the Theers' spy in Chapter 7.
Added the option to be grateful to Salina for treating the scar.
MC recalls seeing a certain white spotted horse before.
If the MC has enough Lore, they recognize the word 'Tablinum'.
Added a different version of Lance's conversation outside the Inn based on a past choice.
Chouriça now reacts if you have high enough Corruption.
Added the option to keep Aurelius' cross without wearing it around your neck.
Added the option to tell Hadrian he's your first kiss.
Added the option to tell Alessa she's your first kiss.
Put the 'A Templar's Heart' and 'The Flame Beneath the Ice' achievements in their proper places.
Added 'A Sight from the Deep' achievement.
Added 'Fearless' achievement.
Added 'A New Champion' achievement.
Added 'A Noble Parade' achievement.
Added 'The Title before the Name' achievement.
Added 'Gold Handkerchief' achievement.
Added 'Green Handkerchief' achievement.
Added 'A Promise of a Date' achievement.
Added 'You'd Rather Not' achievement.
Added 'A Sweet Treat' achievement.
Added 'It Grew' achievement.
Added 'Record Keeper' achievement.
Added 'Human After All' achievement.
Added 'Head in the Clouds' achievement.
Added 'A Sparrow Soaring Too High' achievement.
Added 'A Tight-Lipped Confession' achievement.
Added 'Through the Haze of Embarrassment' achievement.
Added 'The Noose Tightens' achievement.
Added 'Ancient Word' achievement.
Added 'A Bit of History' achievement.
Added 'A Tight-knit Group' achievement.
Added 'No Point in Clustering' achievement.
(It may not be ready on all platforms. I know the game has been updated on the omnibus and the COG website, but I can't know if it has been in all the others. If the patch isn't ready in your platform, it should be in a couple of hours.)

Who wants an ARC of my pirate book?
I'm looking for semi-pro/professional book reviewers who would be interested in my 2024 duology about a pseudo-regency/Victorian liege who gets kidnapped by pirates.
I have more pitch if you wanna open a conversation but super quick it's:
Adult fantasy
We have the Known and Unknown Seas, magic exists on the Unknown Seas but has been chased out of the Known World.
Nat (our MC) is nonbinary and bi and their love interests are both bi (it is not polyamory, it's just shifting from one LI to another with no big fault or villainisation)
What I'd like from you
A space you do reviews (blog, tube, gram, tok, idc)
Willingness to review on said space AND Goodreads/the Storygraph
I don't mind if you're new to this whole shebang, I have no specific follower count you have to meet. I do, however, reserve the right to pick people with the right vibes and gently let down folks without
What I offer
Pdf of the manuscript (either only book 1 or the full omnibus as agreed)
Png of the cover image and/or paperback wrap
Possible future books review relationship
Feel free to check out my short stories if you're wanting an impression of style but honestly just shoot me a DM or whatever (I promise I'll be nice even if you have "stupid" questions)

Quote
Suddenly Elizabeth stepped forward and most competently boarded the omnibus, in front of everybody. She took a seat on top. The impetuous creature—a pirate—started forward, sprang away; she had to hold the rail to steady herself, for a pirate it was, reckless, unscrupulous, bearing down ruthlessly, circumventing dangerously, boldly snatching a passenger, or ignoring a passenger, squeezing eel-like and arrogant in between, and then rushing insolently all sails spread up Whitehall. And did Elizabeth give one thought to poor Miss Kilman who loved her without jealousy, to whom she had been a fawn in the open, a moon in a glade? She was delighted to be free. The fresh air was so delicious. It had been so stuffy in the Army and Navy Stores. And now it was like riding, to be rushing up Whitehall; and to each movement of the omnibus the beautiful body in the fawn-coloured coat responded freely like a rider, like the figure-head of a ship, for the breeze slightly disarrayed her; the heat gave her cheeks the pallor of white painted wood; and her fine eyes, having no eyes to meet, gazed ahead, blank, bright, with the staring incredible innocence of sculpture.
Virginia Woolf, Mrs Dalloway (p. 134)

Sensor Sweep: Rialto’s Market, Castle Amber, Freas, David Drake
Fiction (Goodman Games): Jack Holbrook Vance was summoned into this world just over a century ago in San Francisco on August 28, 1916. A writer of multiple genres, he is best known to fans of Dungeons and Dragons for his Dying Earth novels, one of the inspirations for the magic system, often called ‘Vancian’, in which magic-users memorize spells from their librams, and once cast, forget them for the day.
Gamergate (Walker’s Retreat): Among all the other events of the last week or so was the anniversary of Gamergate. To which I find this Tweet and its pic very much my mood.
Poetry (Kairos): Kipling’s famous–some might say infamous–poem “The Wrath of the Awakened Saxon” has gained a great deal of traction in dissident circles. I maintain that a major reason why this poem has resonated with the current generations of young men on the right is that it highlights the masculine virtues they were never taught.
Fiction (DMR Books): Since April 9, 2018, I’ve been periodically posting blog entries devoted to what I call the “Forefathers of Sword and Sorcery”. Those would be the men—writers like Doyle and London—who influenced the First Dynasty of S&S authors such as Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith and C.L. Moore. Apparently, there are some very confused people out there on the Webz. I thought it best to define some terms and parameters so further misapprehensions don’t occur.
Art (Rafeeq McGiveron): s July draweth to a close, I suddenly realize that the last month and a half has been pretty busy in terms of updates to my Heinlein cover art galleries.  In addition to new-to-me editions of books like Waldo and Magic, Inc., Orphans of the Sky, The Man Who Sold the Moon, Time for the Stars, and Podkayne of Mars, I also have come across quite a bit of things from magazines.
Terry Pratchett (The Wert Zone): Following the publication of yet another publicity image from BBC America’s The Watch, a TV series loosely “inspired by” Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books, his family and associates have once again made it clear that they do not approve of the project and have distanced themselves from it.
Pulp (Pulp Net): I recently obtained The Doc Vandal Omnibus: Vol. 1, which has the first three novels by Dave Robinson featuring Doc Vandal, a steampunk take on Doc Savage. Doc Vandal was influenced by Doc Savage, but also Captain Future and Perry Rhodan. He exists in a different world where aliens exist and other strange things. Born on the Moon and raised by alien AIs, Vandal is an improved human who uses his skills and knowledge to create inventions and stand up against evil.
Gaming (Grognardia): Naturally, we’re not playing these games face-to-face. Instead, we’re making use of VASSAL, a virtual tabletop created for wargamers (specifically Advanced Squad Leader). VASSAL has proven surprisingly easy to use, not to mention fun. Based on my friend’s recommendation, we began my education with GMT’s Falling Sky: The Gallic Revolt Against Caesar. Partly this was done because it’s a period of history I know a bit about and partly because Falling Sky is an entry in GMT’s COIN series, which my friend thought would appeal to me.
History (Legends of Men): A while ago, I picked up an old book on pirates for cheap at a used bookstore. It’s General History of the Robberies & Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates. by Daniel Defoe. You may recognize the name Daniel Defoe as the author of Robinson Crusoe and other novels. He’s one of the first early English novelists, and his authorship of this book is disputed but highly probable. This book is loaded with more than 20 stories of actual pirates, their exploits, successes, failures, and deaths.
Fiction (Benespen): King David’s Spaceship [Amazon link] is the first book by Jerry Pournelle I remember reading. I picked it up from the local library in 2006, and I could not put it down. Colonel Nathan MacKinnie’s desperate quest to find a forgotten database of ancient technology on a barbaric planet, and then spirit that information home under the watchful eyes of the Imperial Navy is a classic adventure. Jerry Pournelle’s style is the place where intrigue, politics, and technology meet, often with a heavy dose of military tactics. King David’s Spaceship is all that and more.
Conan (Conan.com): We’re happy to announce the launch of the official Conan store, called Rialto’s Market, here on Conan.com! It’s headed by the merchant Rialto, someone you’ll learn more about in the near future. We’ve got T-shirts, Thulsa Doom bottle openers, phone cases, mugs, and more for you in Rialto’s Market. You can also pre-order the Conan the Cimmerian: The Tower of the Elephant board game, if you missed out on the successful Kickstarter.
RPG (Pelgrane Press): The term: table sense. It’s what developers look for when you write scenarios or source material for roleplaying games. It’s what game masters need from you when they read your material. Table sense is what it sounds like: the ability to forecast what will happen at the gaming table when the scene, magic item, background detail, monster or whatever it is comes into use. How do you get it? By playing roleplaying games of the sort you’re writing for. And more importantly: by picturing the play experience as you write, away from your table.
Vampirella (Monster Librarian): From the Stars…a Vampiress provides a great reference guide to one of the most recognizable female horror comics heroines, Vampirella. The first section, “The Vampire Who Fell to Earth”, tells her story from her initial creation by James Warren and Forrest J. Ackerman, and other writers and artists who helped her development such as Archie Goodwin, Jose Gonzalez, Trina Robbins, Frank Frazetta, Gonzalo Mayo, and many more, to her cancellation in 1982 after Warren Publishing closed its doors.
Science Fiction (Digital Bibliophilia): Rogue Ship is one the novels Vogt constructed from previously issued stories into a ‘fix-up’ and has a complicated history. From the notes in my 1975 Panther paperback edition it started life as three seperate stories that were rewritten for this single novel. Beginning in 1947, with Centaurus II, which was first published in ‘Astounding Science Fiction’ (which became the magazine ‘Analog Science Fact – Science Fiction’), we then move on to Rogue Ship published in ‘Super Science Fiction’ three years later, and lastly have a story called The Expendables published within the pages of ‘IF Worlds of Science Fiction’ in 1963.
RPG (Goodman Games): It’s time! We’re opening the doors on Original Adventures Reincarnated #5: Castle Amber, and you are all invited inside. The fifth release in our Original Adventures Reincarnated line is now up and available for pre-order from our online store. It’s your chance to get in line for the first wave of shipments of this great new release.
Cinema (Flickering Myth): When The Expendables was first announced in late 2009, my excitement levels went through the roof. Initially it was Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Jet Li on board and that was exciting enough. Then Dolph Lundgren signed on, and the rest followed. By the time a mid-shoot addition of Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger was announced (in a surprise cameo where the surprise was blown long before release sadly) I was bouncing around like a toddler high on Dib Dab. The first film came out 10 years ago today.
Cinema (Made in Atlantis): During the 1899 to 1901 Boxer Rebellion, Peking is an open city with the Chinese, and several European countries vie for control. The Boxers, who oppose Christianity and the western powers, who still exercised complete sovereignty over their compounds and their citizens. The head of the U.S. garrison is Marine Major Matt Lewis (Charlton Heston), an experienced China hand who knows local conditions well. He meets exiled Russian Baroness Natalie Ivanoff (Ava Gardner), with whom he falls in love.
Science Fiction (Frank Ormond): I have previously written on my favorite science fiction series, Count to the Eschaton Sequence, before. The first book is Count to a Trillion and is an excellent adventure science fiction novel. This retrospective was a long time coming. I’ve found John C. Wright’s work fascinating, if not a bit verbose in areas, and creative. He’s held up in some circles as a master of the craft, and it’s easy to see why.
Art (DMR Books): The late, great Kelly Freas* would’ve turned ninety-eight today. As I’ve noted elsewhere, Freas started out in Weird Tales and could have had a fine career illustrating fantasy and weird fiction. However, he tied his star to the burgeoning science fiction market and became one of the all-time greats. For me, without question, Freas’ art epitomizes the look of what’s known as the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Gorgeous color, beautiful women, sleek spaceships and a universe blazing with stars.
Comic Books (Comicsradio): Everyone falls in love with Cave Girl. It apparently can’t be helped. Over the course of the first three stories included in Cave Girl #11 (her debut issue despite the numbering), two men have fallen in love with the blonde Jungle Girl already. In fact, in this issue’s final story (still written by Gardner Fox and drawn by Bob Powell), Luke and Alan haven’t given up yet. They are attempting to cross the mountains that surround Cave Girl’s home jungle, still determined to talk her into coming back to civilization and claiming her inheritance.
Anime (Karavansara): As a kid I watched a lot of movies and TV series, cartoons both western and Japanese, I read comics, I read novels and short stories and non fiction… each of these shaped the way I think about stories, and I think it might be fun to try and take a look at all these influences. And I’m starting with anime because… ah, because we need to start somewhere, right? As I probably already mentioned in the past, Italy was at the forefront of the anime invasion that started at the very tail-end of the ’70s.
D&D (Mystical Trash Heap): As a hobby for nerds, there’s a strong appetite among D&D fans to make lists and categorize things, and this extends not just to elements within the game but to meta-level discussion about the game itself. The most obvious breaking point is TSR-D&D (1974-97) and Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro D&D (1998-present), with the 1998-99 period (after Wizards took over but before D&D 3.0 was released) as a transition period.  The next most obvious is the various editions: Original (1974-77*), 1st Edition Advanced (1978-88), 2nd Edition Advanced (1989-99), 3rd (2000-2007), 4th (2008-2013), and 5th (2014-present) editions.
Science Fiction (Chapleboro): David Drake almost missed our interview. Although the incident occurred two weeks before we met, Drake was directly involved while riding one of his three motorcycles. As we discussed the crash, Drake casually stated that being rear-ended on his bike was one of the ways he thought he might die. Fortunately, he walked away with nothing more than a few bumps and bruises – not too bad, considering his motorcycle was sandwiched between two SUVs.
Sensor Sweep: Rialto’s Market, Castle Amber, Freas, David Drake published first on https://sixchexus.weebly.com/

No One Masturbates to C-SPAN But Maybe They Should
by Don Hall
A man stands on the sidelines of a fight. The melee is more words tossed at one another than actual blows and neither opponent even bothers to notice the man so he watches. Both sides of the struggle scream insults at one another. The rage they exhibit is almost comical if viewed from the man’s self deluded objectivity — they’re both so goddamned hysterically angry.
Both sides use their version of morality as a bludgeon against the other. Both opponents zealously use anything and everything they can think of to knock the other off balance, to obstruct them, to defeat them.
The man on the sidelines just observes. Either one of the raging combatants could enlist him in their fight, tipping the balance, but they are so focused on their self righteous causes, they ignore him completely.
Eric Wilson, in his column American Shithole, asks “Who are we, America?” as he spews out another brilliantly written rant against the Powers That Be in Trump’s Regime.
Roughly 5% of the American public see America as a once shining beacon of hope to the world and, in an effort to turn back the clock, are willing to brick by brick allow the dismantling of the attempts to equalize the landscape of her people. A blind eye to rollbacks on voter rights, education, healthcare, affirmative action, policing reform, and practically everything from the New Deal to the Civil Rights Act is subject to destruction. This 5% has convinced another 20% to vote with them
Roughly 5% of America are idealists, hoping against hope that the country can live up to the rhetoric of its founders (all while tearing the very idea of its founders from the pedestal of history) and seeking a better, more just, more utopian society. They are activists and work toward everything from equal bathroom rights for transgender persons to the reforming of police culture to increased awareness of our racist past (and present) to the centuries old subjugation of women. The fight for the health of the planet, the education of the children, the rights of the downtrodden and left behind. This 5% have convinced another 20% to vote with them.
Roughly 50% of the country is watching from the sidelines, ignored by the other two sides. A state of willful apathy. They are busy working, coming home exhausted, grabbing a tasty adult beverage and watching Dancing with the Stars or a pirated copy of Pacific Rim 2. They don’t see anyone really doing anything about the problems of the country as American politics hit a stagnant point of forward momentum soon after Reagan blew the rims off of things by winning the presidency with 84% of the voting population weighing in for him. Ever since, it has been a matter of one side beating the other side but just barely.
Some of them voted for Bill Clinton but Bill signed the Omnibus legislation and fucked an intern. Some of them kept the faith and voted for Obama but Obama deported more immigrants than any president before and used deadly model airplanes to kill civilians. Some voted for McCain but had to hold their gag reflex in check because, you know, Palin. Some voted for W but then he declared the longest war in American history based on bullshit evidence. And because the system is corrupt and broken, they weren’t surprised at all when Trump won.
These people don't feel supported by their community, their schools, their government. When they get sick, no one cares. Why should they care back? They see that everyone else is speeding, so they hammer the accelerator as well – what's the point in being the only one who doesn't? They are incensed by school shootings yet no progress is ever made, so they check out. This is referred to as the bystander phenomenon. 50% of the country has given up on society in any active sense.
That’s who we are.
My wife recently made the observation that, on Literate Ape, I am the closest thing we have to a Right Wing voice. This alarmed me. Anyone who knows me (no, not from the internet or from gossip or from an ex-girlfriend) knows that I am anything but Right Wing. A Right Wing voice? Are you joking?
In our very polarized political cottage, it goes without much extrapolation that today is a “You’re With Us or Against Us” environment and, in that frame, I am both a LibTard and a Neo-Nazi depending on whose opinion I am skeptical of and how I decide to voice that opinion. As David once wrote “If there were to be an actual revolution in this country, I'm concerned that neither side would have me as a soldier.”
Rather than try to defend myself in that context, I decided to look into it a bit. Go back and re-read essays written. Find out where this assertion came from. Prosecute myself in depth. Understand why I may be seen as anything but the dyed in the wool, old school Liberal that I see myself to be.
At core, I believe in the freedom to choose.
To choose where you live, how you make a living, what you do to your body and what others do to it, as well. Freedom of religious or political expression. Freedom to be wrong.
I believe the government should stay out of our personal lives but that it is government’s responsibility to ensure equal protections, equity, justice and dignity to all citizens under the umbrella of that body. I believe in the feasibility and obligation for the government to provide universal healthcare, a streamlined pathway to citizenship, a military force for defense, protection of the environment, and the regulation of corporate industry.
I believe that it isn’t the angry activists on the street that will change society but the Ryan Cooglers and Jordan Peeles and Patty Jenkins who will right the ship’s course. By being excellent at what they do and telling stories society desperately needs to hear and succeeding in creating communal experiences that millions upon millions of Americans share, their work influences everyone and in a convincing way.
I also believe our choices all have consequences and that to use your background, marginalization, privilege, victim status, suffering or success as an avoidance of those consequences is the bullshit reasoning of a child. This is the part that revokes my Progressive card for many.
I am a Liberal who really dislikes the most strident and extreme of the Progressives. I mean, disliking the extreme Right Wing is so fucking easy and obvious, calling them out is like calling out dogs for squatting when they shit or the sun for being a giant, flaming ball of gas. Who, in their right mind, doesn’t already know that these guys are lying assholes and what benefit do we garner for repeating it?
No, despising the Tea Partiers and Trumpsters is so easy and unchallenging as to be kind of silly. They aren’t listening so I’m not almost ever talking to them. It’s the goddamned Progressive Extreme, the Army of the Identity Victimhood, the Knee-jerk, Call-out Mafia whom I take issue with. And  #FuckTrump isn’t brave or oriented to change — it is an eighth grade taunt and nothing more.
At 52, this is what I know. Almost all of the problems we face today can be solved with A) legislation and B) enforcement of legislation. To effectively change the policies to be more Progressive, we have one tool at our disposal — democracy. Six million more people voted for HRC than Trump yet, based upon the system that we all agreed to live with (because so far, no one has had an epic protest of the Electoral College despite the fact that it hurts both puppies AND immigrant children in a long term sense) he won that election. Barely. Again.
If 5% of that aforementioned 50% of the citizenry living out that bystander phenomenon were convinced to vote our way and in the states that mattered at the time, the election has a very different outcome. Politics is not a fucking boxing match, it’s a chess game. And no one wins chess by screaming insults at their opponent or bashing them over the head with the board.
This means finding reasonable compromises and working with people less ideologically motivated by passion because passion is the enemy of reason. Passion is awesome when it comes to fucking, fighting, or fleeing but is lousy when trying to craft long term rules designed to protect everyone.
As my wife says, “No one masturbates to C-SPAN.” But maybe they should. In a democracy, it is the patience of voting and legislating that steers us toward the utopia we seek.
I'd spank it if we got universal healthcare. Maybe twice.

The 80s Cruise Omnibus: Katrina and Thomas Dolby
This is a part of our full coverage of the 2018 80s Cruise. Read more about the floating music festival here.
The 80s Cruise excels by not only booking big names for the main stage but by finding the right bands to play in the smaller venues. The bands picked for the 400-seat rooms often walk onto the ship being considered “one-hit wonders”, but quickly become Cruise favorites. Modern English, Wang Chung, and Information Society were all booked as “smaller” acts on their sailings and all three now top “favorites” lists for past sailings.

Katrina Leskanich, former lead singer of Katrina and the Waves, fell into the “one hit wonder” category when the Celebrity Summit left Ft. Lauderdale in 2018, but like those who came before her, when the ship returned a week later, she was one of the performers everyone was talking about. Leskanich is best known for the cheerful anthem “Walking on Sunshine”, but the singer struggled with the band when they first formed in 1979. It took four years before they were signed to a small Canadian label to release their debut album, Walking on Sunshine. The record had modest success, but around the time the band released their second album, they finally broke into the U.S. thanks to The Bangles.
The California natives covered the Katrina and the Waves song “Going Down to Liverpool” for their first album. The exposure they received when the cover version was released as a single was enough to get them a recording contract with Capitol Records. They reworked songs from their two Canadian albums and released the hugely successful, Katrina and the Waves in 1984. The new version of “Walking on Sunshine” made it to the top 10 in the U.S. and proved to be incredibly popular all over Europe. But just as their luck had flipped one way, it quickly flipped in the opposite direction.
Leskanich told audiences on the Cruise that their second single, “Red Wine and Whiskey,” was caught up in the record labeling scandal of the 1980s. The track was put on a list of songs deemed dangerous to teens, despite sounding more like a cautionary tale than a party anthem. It was suddenly too toxic for public consumption and the loss of momentum caused by the controversy all but sealed the fate of the band. Several singles followed, but lagging sales saw them dropped by Capitol. The band retreated back to England at the end of the decade where they released a few modest-selling albums until lady luck struck again in 1997.

The band won Europe’s Eurovision contest that year with the song, “Love Shine a Light.” It went on to become a top 10 hit in six countries, but despite renewed success, Leskanich quit the band a year later. Since then, she has released several solo albums in Europe, worked as a DJ at BBC Radio 2, starred in a musical, and wrote a guidebook to London featuring her dog, Peggy Lee.
Leskanich was quick to open up during a meet and greet she shared with Berlin’s Terri Nunn and Jessie’s Girl vocalist, Jenna O’Gara. Funny and forthcoming, the singer spoke to audiences about growing up as a military brat and her experiences – good and bad – with Katrina and the Waves. She proved to be charming and animated when performing, expounding on her life and songs.
The audience heard about her connection to the cover songs she added to the set, including “Echo Beach” by Martha and the Muffins and Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell.” A melody of hits by her female contemporaries, including “Sweet Dreams (are Made of These)” and “Kids in America,” went down particularly well with the crowd, but it was when she was singing her own songs that she truly shined. The songs themselves were catchy and her enthusiastic, sometimes wistful, performances of them made them something special.
Another surprise on the 2018 Cruise was synthesizer virtuoso, Thomas Dolby. He was never your run of the mill rock star, in fact, that moniker never fit the music visionary that built a career not out of album sales and tour numbers, but by fusing together sound and technology. Often mistaken as a one-hit wonder thanks to the success of his 1982 song, “She Blinded Me With Science,” Dolby has had a long idiosyncratic career that found him revolutionizing two industries.

Dolby got his start as a teen in the late 70s working sound mixing jobs in London’s punk and new wave clubs. That scored him a spot as the keyboardist in The Camera Club, a band virtually unknown outside of the deep, dark reaches of obscure music trivia where it’s known that they recorded the original version of “Video Killed the Radio Star”. He went on to work and write for a myriad of musicians, all while stretching the bounds of electronic instruments.
The session work he did on Foreigner 4 paved the way for him to find success as a solo artist. His innovative technique for creating the keyboard sequence for “Waiting for a Girl Like You” involved recording a sustained note and manipulating it to create complex harmonies in the days before computers were commonplace. The band wasn’t quite what to make of his work, the bass player saying at the time, “It’s a bit like massage music, isn’t it?” Dolby took the money he earned on the record to fund his first album, The Golden Age of Wireless, which featured “She Blinded Me With Science.”
He went on to have an almost nonlinear career in which he recorded his own, often unconventional, albums while doing somewhat mundane work with for The Thompson Twins, Joni Mitchell, and Def Leppard. In the early 90s, he moved to Silicon Valley and created the software that made polyphonic ringtones possible while also taking time to score video games and movies. After abandoning the tech industry in the early aughts, Dolby put out two albums and directed an award-winning documentary. He became the Homewood Professor of the Arts at Johns Hopkins University in 2014 and now heads the University’s Music for New Media program.
Thomas Dolby on The 80s Cruise by LJ Moskowitz
Mirroring his unconventional career, Dolby has shied away from conventional concert tours. His offerings have most often been multimedia affairs involving music, visuals, and storytelling. The smaller venues available on the ship forced him to stick to a more traditional type of show. Yet even standing behind his synthesizer and computer, just a drummer and guitarist in tow, he brought something fresh and compelling to his performances.
Dolby’s music was always ahead of its time, but he updated the older songs by infusing them with new ways of creating sound. Songs like, “Europa and the Pirate Twins”, “One of Our Submarines, and “Hyperactive!” felt like they could be on heavy rotation on SiriusXMU. Perhaps that was because the most critically regarded bands in recent years, such as LCD Soundsystem, DBFC, and St. Vincent, form a direct line from Dolby. The gadgets and methods that made him a curiosity in the 1980s have transformed into a legend to younger generations. Not bad for a man who was once accused of making “massage music”.

My Week in Manga: October 2-October 8, 2017
My News and Reviews
Last week at Experiments in Manga I announced the winner of the Assassin’s Creed manga giveaway. The post also includes a list of manga published in English that feature pirates of various types, including historical pirates, fantasy pirates, space pirates, and others. Then New York Comic Con (which is still going on) and Yaoi Con were held last week as well. I didn’t attend either event, but there were some announcements made by Kodansha Comics, Viz Media, and SuBLime Manga (which is technically Viz Media, too). Kodansha revealed plans to release Kenji Inoue and Kimitake Yoshioka’s Grand Blue Dreaming, Mitsurou Kubo’s Again!!, and Akiko Higashimura’s Tokyo Tarareba Girls in print. Among other things, Viz will be adding Hidenori Kusaka and Satoshi Yamamoto’s Pokémon Sun & Moon and Tenya Yabuno’s Pokémon Horizon: Sun & Moon and will be re-releasing Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys and 21st Century Boys in a hardcover edition in addition to speeding up the release of Kōhei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia. SuBLime announced a few new digital titles, but Ranmaru Zariya’s Coyote and Ogeretsu Tanaka’s Escape Journey will receive print runs, too.
Quick Takes
Aho-Girl, Volume 1 by Hiroyuki. I only realized it after I finished the first volume of Ah0-Girl, but I’ve actually read another of Hiroyuki’s four-panel manga, Dojin Work, which was never released in its entirety in English. It’s been a long while since I’ve read Dojin Work, but I get the sense that in general I prefer that earlier series over this more recent one. Aho-Girl, while it did legitimately make me laugh on multiple occasions, tends to rub me the wrong way and I personally could have done without all of the sexual harassment being used as the basis for comedy. The dirty jokes I don’t particularly mind, though. As defined by first volume’s cover, “aho-girl” is Japanese for a clueless girl. Yoshiko Hanabatake, the series’ titular character, is indeed an astonishingly dense airhead. Oh, and she really, really likes bananas. Other major characters in the first volume of the manga include Akuru Akutsu, her long-suffering next door neighbor and supposed childhood friend (who doesn’t seem to have many friends in part due to his own unfortunate personality), her mother Yoshie, who would like nothing more than to see the two of the together, and Sayaka Sumino, a genuinely kind girl, classmate, and friend. As may safely be assumed, most of the humor of Aho-Girl revolves around Yoshiko’s sheer stupidity, for better and for worse.
Appleseed Alpha by Iou Kuroda. An adaptation of sorts of the Appleseed Alpha anime, which itself is a spinoff of sorts of Masamune Shirow’s Appleseed manga, Kuroda’s Appleseed Alpha manga forms a prequel to the original story. Although to be completely honest, I’m not entirely sure exactly how the Appleseed Alpha fits into the larger Appleseed franchise since I’m not familiar with any of the other manga or anime. What drew me to the Appleseed Alpha manga was Kuroda’s involvement. It’s been a few years since I’ve read it, but I remember enjoying Kuroda’s alternative manga Sexy Voice and Robo, so I was glad to see more of the creator’s work with its distinctive illustration style released. Kuroda’s Appleseed Alpha was longer than I originally thought it was–Kodansha Comics’ hardcover edition is in fact an omnibus collecting the entire two-volume series, but somehow manages to look much shorter than it actually is. Appleseed Alpha is not a quick read although the plot and action moves at a fairly steady pace. The story follows Deunan, a very competent ex-SWAT officer, and her combat cyborg boyfriend Briareos as the couple makes their way through a dystopic cyberpunk Western version of the United States. Previous knowledge of Appleseed is not needed to enjoy Kuroda’s somewhat quirky contribution.
QQ Sweeper, Volumes 1-3 by Kyousuke Motomi. I greatly enjoyed Motomi’s earlier manga series Dengeki Daisy, so I was looking forward to giving another of the creator’s series a try, which is what ultimately led me to QQ Sweeper. (A few of the characters from Dengeki Daisy actually happen to make quick cameo appearances in the series, too.) Fumi’s dream in life is to find a prince charming to sweep her off her feet. Instead, she finds Kyutaro who has a fixation on literally sweeping. He has a pretty good reason for it, though. Kyutaro and his family are responsible for ridding the local area of dangerous infestations of malicious thoughts and psychological torment which manifest as bugs and physical cleanliness can go far to help with spiritual cleanliness. Of course, sometimes the bugs really are just bugs. For as seemingly silly and charmingly goofy as QQ Sweeper can often be–it can essentially be summed up as a supernatural cleaning manga–the series quickly becomes surprisingly dark. QQ Sweeper ends somewhat suddenly with the third volume and doesn’t really provide much of a satisfying conclusion, but fortunately the sequel series Queen’s Quality has been licensed as well. The series’ humor and seriousness occasionally seems a little off-balance, but I really liked QQ Sweeper and certainly plan on continuing with the story.

Disneyland CA: How to Enjoy the Theme Park With Very Young Travelers
You may be wondering whether you should take your very young children to Disneyland in California. If this is your family's first trip to Disneyland, you may be wondering whether they are old enough to enjoy the theme parks, and whether your group could possibly have a good time. Well, leave it to Disney to get this one right. Disney's success is largely based on their ability to appeal to all age groups. Here are some of the areas that are geared especially to young ones and their parents. Click this website to know Beston group.
• Baby Care Center - this wonderful, quiet and calming facility is tucked between "Main Street Photo" and the "Plaza Inn". Although there are no places for children to nap, there are rocking chairs available for nursing mothers to feed their child. There are also nice sized changing tables and even child sized flush toilets to help with potty training needs. If you run out of diapers, you can buy one at the center. This prevents you from having to go all the way back to your hotel room to change a diaper. The center also has an area to warm bottles and baby food, and to clean out baby bottles. If you need extra formula or baby food, they have a selection on hand for purchase. Although there are also changing tables located in both men's and women's restrooms in various locations around the park, if you and your little one need a break from the heat, crowds and noise, this is the place to go. Check out this link: http://bestonrides.pk/pirate-ship-amusement-park-ride-in-pakistan/ to know Beston viking boat  carnival rides manufacturer.
Tumblr media
• Fantasyland - there are many rides in Fantasyland that are especially good for small children. These include: Casey Jr. Circus Train, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, It's a Small World, King Arthur's Carrousel, Peter Pan's Flight, and Storybook Land Canal Boats. Some of the other rides in Fantasyland are considered "dark rides" and may scare young children.
• Mickey's Toontown - this is another good place for young children. There are many interactive things to do here. There are also fun places to explore, like: Chip 'n' Dale Treehouse, Donald's Boat, Goofy's Playhouse. Minnie's house and Mickey's house. If your child is comfortable around characters, this is a great place to get autographs.
• The Disneyland Railroad - this train goes all of the way around the park. It's a great way to get from one land to the other if you're tired. If you have a collapsible stroller, you can bring it right on the train.
• Main Street - some of the attractions that might appeal to small children in this area are: Horse-Drawn Carriage, Horseless Carriage, Omnibus and the Fire Engine.
• There are some other rides scattered around Disneyland that younger children might enjoy. These are: Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in Critter Country, Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia, Big Thunder Ranch and Tom Sawyer's Island in Frontierland, and Jungle Cruise, Tarzan's Treehouse and Enchanted Tiki Room in Adventureland.
If an adult in your group has their heart set on riding one of the "thrill" rides, Disney has this covered too. (Note that there are height requirements on some of the rides). Check out the Fast Pass System and Single Rider Service, which are available on some rides. Both are free services that will significantly cut your wait time for boarding a ride. Also check out "Child Swap" which allows one adult to wait in line to board an attraction and ride, and then "pass off" the child to the second adult who boards the attraction without waiting in line. You will need to ask the cast member at the entrance to each attraction that has a height requirement about this option. This can be a lifesaver if each parent wants to take a turn riding an attraction while the other adult stays with the little one.

My Week in Manga: August 21-August 27, 2017
My News and Reviews
I was away last week traveling for work as well as for yet another family wedding (this year has been full of them), but I still managed to post a review before it was all said and done. It’s several month’s later than I really intended it to be since the manga was actually released back in May, but I’ve finally reviewed the first omnibus of My Brother’s Husband by Gengoroh Tagame. The manga was easily one of my most anticipated releases for 2017. I’ve actually been collecting the series in Japanese (even though my reading comprehension of the language isn’t quite where it needs to be yet), but I am incredibly happy that it’s being translated into English. I’m not sure when the second and final omnibus is scheduled to be released, but there’s not question that I’ll be picking it up once it’s available.
Quick Takes
Assassin’s Creed: Awakening, Volume 1 written by Takashi Yano and illustrated by Kenji Oiwa. There have been numerous Assassin’s Creed comic adaptations published by Titan Comics, so including Yano and Oiwa’s Awakening  as part of its catalog seems an obvious choice to make even though the publisher doesn’t typically release many manga. Admittedly, I’ve not played very much of any of the Assassin’s Creed video games (although what I have played I’ve largely liked) and I’m not especially familiar with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, the installment upon which Awakening is loosely based. What primarily drew me to the series was the involvement of Oiwa, one of the creators behind the manga adaptations of Otsuichi’s Goth and Welcome to the N.H.K., both of which I greatly enjoyed. Awakening alternates between two stories taking place in different time periods which turn out to be deeply connected to each other although the depth of that connection isn’t immediately clear. The first, and the one I prefer, is set in the early eighteenth century and follows Edward Kenway, a pirate captain who gets caught up in the conflict between the Templars and Assassins. Centuries later, that conflict is still ongoing, impacting the life of Masato Yagyu and his family in unexpected ways.
The Backstagers, Volume 1: Rebels without Applause written by James Tynion IV, illustrated by Rian Sygh, and colors by Walter Baiamonte. I believe The Backstagers first came to my attention when it was featured on a list of ongoing comics series which included trans characters. And indeed, one of the characters in The Backstagers–and an important main character at that–is a transguy, something that is almost unheard of in mainstream comics. (Also of note, the series’ co-creator and illustrator is also trans, which I hadn’t initially realized.) That was enough to make me interested in the series, and the first volume was more than enough to make me a fan. The Backstagers is set at an all-boys high school and largely follows the stage crew of the drama club. Jory, a recent transfer student, who at first he thought he wanted to be an actor ultimately finds himself swept up in the magic of what happens behind the scenes. Quite literally, actually. The Backstagers is a tremendous amount of high-energy fun with brightly colored artwork and sparkles, blushing, and flowers galore. The comic is also delightfully queer and diverse, breaking down gender stereotypes by presenting a wide variety of masculinities. I absolutely loved the first volume of The Backstagers and definitely look forward to more.
Nirvana by Jin and Sayuki. Due to her selflessness and devotion to volunteer efforts, Yachiyo Hitotose has become known as the Modern-Day Florence Nightingale. While on a trip to help those in need overseas, Yachiyo’s flight crashes and she suddenly finds herself reincarnated in another world known as Gulgraf. Believed to be the new embodiment of the divine goddess Sakuya, the bringer of light, Yachiyo has naturally taken upon herself to rescue and protect the residents of Gulgaf from the powers of darkness. As well-meaning as she is, Yachiyo will still need plenty of help if she wants to make a difference, especially as there are those who already want her dead. And so she sets off on an adventure, traveling across the world in search of allies as she learns to control the new powers she has been granted. Nirvana does seem to at least in part be be inspired by Buddhist and Hindu mythologies and mysticism–which honestly is what compelled me to give the series a try–but at this point they seem to be used mostly as a veneer and to provide the series’ most basic narrative structure and worldbuilding. I wasn’t as captivated as I was hoping to be with Nirvana, but I was still entertained by the first volume which takes a much more comedic approach than I was expecting.

Embarrassment of Riches
I’ve been an anime and manga fan for long time, and there have been some titles that were thought to be more far off dreams than actual candidates for licensing. One of those dreams was getting anything from Leiji Matsumoto, co-creator of Space Battleship Yamato, and creator of Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and Queen Emeraldas among many others. At best, all we had were 5 volumes of the second Galaxy Express 999 manga series published by Viz back in the late 90s-2000s. But now, it seems the flood gates have opened as new licenses are being announced left and right.
Frankly, I was thrilled when Kodansha announced their license of Queen Emeraldas. They didn’t seem to be the type of publisher to take a chance on something so old school, but fortunately, their chance paid off, and the first volume, even as a deluxe hardcover, sold well. Well enough it seems that we are now getting the original Space Pirate Captain Harlock manga from the 70s from Seven Seas Entertainment. This thrills me to no end. I’ve been a fan of Harlock since I first saw raw tapes of the anime back in the 80s. I hunted down everything, including poorly cut video tapes released for kids. I even have the original manga, which I found at Books Nippon in LA. I couldn’t read them, but they where Captain Harlock, so I had to have them.
I am so excited that I will finally be able to read them without having to take Japanese classes, or try to bribe my oldest daughter into translating them. They will be released as 2 deluxe hardback omnibus editions under the name Captain Harlock: The Classic Collection, and will look great next to my Queen Emeraldas volumes. Add this to the previous license Seven Seas announced in January that they would be publishing the new Captain Harlock manga, Captain Harlock ~Dimensional Voyage~, and I am in hog heaven! I’ll get my new Harlock in October, and my old school Harlock in April next year.
As if this isn’t enough, Seven Seas does it to me again by announcing they had also picked up Saint Seiya: Saintia Shou. This is the newest of the Saint Seiya spin-offs that came out of the title’s 30th anniversary celebration. There are two reason this makes me happy: 1) It’s new Saint Seiya! and 2) It features an all girl team in the cloths. This is another series I never thought would make it over here. Saint Seiya was published by Viz Media, but it didn’t do so well in print, and as a result, we never got any of the other spin-offs that came out in the last ten years. I am so excited to get this series, which will be coming out in February of next year.
It’s an embarrassment of riches to be getting all these titles, but it makes me happy none-the-less. They are going on my pre-order list, a list I reserve for only my most must have books. And I MUST HAVE these books!
