The art of Perrault (1)

I found this fascinating article on an art-and-museum website talking about the few times Charles Perrault's fairytales entered the world of art. It's entirely in French, but for those non-French speakers I thought of sharing some elements and points made by the article.

First and foremost, their talk of the Gustave Doré illustrations, THE most famous illustrations of Perrault's fairytales to this day.

A few contextual reminders. We are in the 19th century, the time of nationalism, where each country focused onto itself, explaining the boom of interest for national folktales and fairytales. The literary Romanticism had also started to enter the world of the art - in the British world it was through the Victorian "fairy painting" wave of the 1850s and 1860s. And in France, right as the business of illustrated books and precious engravings is soaring, we got the Gustave Doré illustrations for Perrault.

The book they come from is the Pierre-Jules Hetzel Contes de Perrault edition of 1861 (illustrations by Gustave Doré, preface by P.-J. Stahl). It contains the eight prose tales of Perrault, from his Histoires ou Contes du temps passé (Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots, Cinderella, Little Thumbling, Toads and Diamonds, Riquet with the tuft), plus a prose version of Donkey Skin. The book contains 40 illustrations, all based on models and drawings of Doré, though done by several engravers that were selected by both Hetzel and Doré: François Pannemaker, Héliodore and Anthelme Pisan. In 1861 the engravings themselves were shown, on their own, at the art Salon de peinture et sculpture (the huge yearly artistic event of 19th century France) - they were destined for collections, be them the personal collections of Doré and his engravers, or those of wealthy collectors.

The order of the fairytales was changed in this edition, which decided to go: Little Red Riding Hood, Little Thumbling, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Riquet with the tuft, Donkey Skin, Diamonds and Toads, and Bluebeard at the end.

The Bibliothèque Nationale of France and the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain of Strasbourg have both preserved precious photographies which were taken (by Nadar and Michelez) of the original wood-drawings Doré made for these illustrations. Doré had them exposed at the Louis Martinet galerie, and these photos are VERY precious because they are the only trace we have of Doré's original plans for these pictures - as well as the only way we can know of what changes and modifications the engravers brought to them.

Doré's illustrations reveal many things. First and foremost, how fairytales clearly were not just for children at the time. While he tries to stay true to the letter of Perrault's stories, Doré still uses a Romantisme noir style (dark Romanticism), offering dramatic, phantasmagorical, almost oppressive visions. The complex engravings play on the lights and the shadows, on the size of the characters and those of the landscape ; they also make heavy use of the monstrous and the uncanny. In the Little Thumbling illustrations, there is an effort to convey the loneliness and anguish of the characters - the forest is endless, dark and scary, swallowing the children... The compositions are however still very detailed, with a lot of accumulations, because they are to be beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. For example, the picture of Bluebeard's wife receiving the keys shows a lot of precious cloth and a varied jewelry - and this overbearing of the decorum, mixed with the unusual appearance of Bluebeard (especially his gaze) all conveys the tragedy that is unfolding here.

By opposition to these scenes of cruelty and tragedy, Doré makes several more "peaceful" illustrations. Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella are still filled with mystery and disturbingness, but they are rather dominated by the sweetness of the two young women. Doré doesn't limit himself to strong and isolated characters, on the contrary he creates an entire "decorative universe" just to have his characters fit into a narrative. The overabundance of tiny details causes an almost unconscious reverie, making the audience almost "re-discover" Perrault texts anew.

The illustrations of Doré caused the massive success of the Hetzel edition, and very quickly these pictures became part of popular culture, influencing the way Perrault's fairytales were perceived up to this day.

Chapter Eleven- Puzzle Pieces

Grace kept many things on her bookshelf in that one bare room. Everything else was plain and RDA-issued, but that bookshelf was hers.

She kept her memories of your mother in it, her sister-box, each edition of every book she had wrote about Pandora and the Na’vi. She kept jewelry made by her schoolchildren on it. She kept framed photos.

And she kept books.

Book about dragons and witches and women who lived in small towns and married the new man from the city. Books where you didn’t have to learn anything, where you could just read and go to another world.

Another world where you weren’t missing your best friend, where you weren’t a child without her parents.

Jake feels like a book.

He feels like an escape, like an oasis in the middle of a desert.

But after last night, after he broke you down with his words like that, he feels more like a mirage.

You thought you were drinking water but really you are just drinking sand, and it’s falling down your throat and choking you. Filling you up, like an hourglass.

The children have long since gone off into the water with Ao’nung, Tsireya, and Rotxo. They jumped in laughing and smiling, and you wanted to smile with them, but something in your heart twists and you just couldn’t.

Now, you’re not alone, but you feel alone.

Neytiri hums to herself as she cleans up breakfast, Jake pretends he isn’t eyeing his gun from his place leaning against the support beam.

You let your eyes trail up his legs and his stomach, past his arms folded over his chest, until you can see the ends of his hair. Then, you look away, and hope he didn’t feel your eyes on him.

“Ney?” you ask as she sits down beside you on the hammock, pressing her forehead to your temple and humming so you know she heard you.

Jake’s eyes meet yours.

“Do you miss the old me?”

She tenses up for a second, seemingly genuinely shocked.

“Why— why would I miss something that is standing right in front of me?” she sighs. “You are still mine, still my mate, and I still love you.”

You hum and turn to kiss her forehead, and when you look back, his eyes are fixed onto the floor.

You don’t think Ronal is a morning person. Or a night person. She seems to perpetually be in some sort of bad mood, always snapping at you and Neytiri, never even a hint of a smile on her face.

Maybe her pregnancy is just hard, you say. Maybe she is just scared of us like we are of her. Humans and Na’vi are alike, in someways. They both fear what that don’t know.

And Ronal does not know you, and you do not know her.

Your morning was spent with treating a few Na’vi who came into the healing tent, with Ronal’s watchful eyes studying every move, but she didn’t say anything. She only nodded and hummed after each patient left, until she left to tend to her own patient, and you just treated whoever came in.

You can tell that Neytiri is itching to hunt and to fight. That is what she has done all her life. She fights and fights, until she comes home and the end of the day and is a wife and a mother. You aren’t quite sure how she does it.

You always spent your days in the healing tent, or caring for the children of the clan, so it was easy for you to come home to your own children. There was no mindset to switch out of, and life became easier and softer. Like you are jumping through a flame, but you’re moving so fast the fire can’t hurt you.

The fire cannot hurt you, not here. Even if you don’t have them next to you.

“I learned how to breathe today!”

You smile fondly at Tuk, looking up from the fruits you’re cutting.

“You have been breathing ever since you came from my stomach, tiny thing.” She frowns slightly at the nickname, but she seems too caught up in the first day to care much.

“No! I mean I learned how to breathe different,” she says. She paces around the mauri, practically jumping from wall to wall. “From my tummy, like this!” she exclaims, before sitting right down in the middle of the mauri and starts to breath deeply, in and out.

You smile for a moment, before you turn back to your fruits, and then you find yourself looking up at Neytiri.

This is hard on her, to do something she doesn’t have a fire for. She loves healing, but hunting is her passion. She needs to be out there, and you can tell it is all taking a toll on her.

This new place, the threat on your family looming over your heads. You had a nightmare about the night when it poured, when that awful man had your children right under his thumb.

Some days, it feels like you didn’t even save them, and you have to remind yourself that you did.

“Are you alright?” you ask her. She stares out the window with a boiling pot next to her, plants and vegetables half cut in front of her.

She shoots you a look over her shoulder.

“Fine,” she mumbles, and you want to say more, but you find that you don’t even know what to say to her. You and Neytiri are so different, and so alike, and that is what makes you work so well.

Puzzle pieces, a zipper, two halves of one whole.

She sticks out in some places and you curve in, so you fit together, stuck together like glue and like love.

But you don’t know how to help her like this.

So, you just smile and nod, and pretend you don’t feel her shrinking into herself, pretend you don’t feel him ignoring you.

You pretend you don’t feel yourself not caring.

Usopp: storytime channel but every storytime is so outlandish that he’s developed a reputation of being a liar. has an avid fanbase of children who are entirely convinced that usopp is the coolest person in the world. posts like every three days. sometimes posts diy tutorials. he’s also the one that runs luffy’s channel

Vinsmoke Sanji: accounts focus on food; recipes, tips, and asmr cooking videos and mouth watering final product photos. only follows women and comments on every single thing they post like a total simp

Chopper: doesn’t have a dedicated format or genre of content, just posts whatever he thinks is funny or cool or interesting

When you don’t come from a family that can invest large capital into your business ,you HAVE to be resourceful. Low income people who seek to level up should be resourceful anyway but it’s especially important when building a business.

I know that customers are shallow despite what they virtue signal in TikTok comment sections. It’s the reason why brands pay already rich, skinny, blonde (usually white) women tons of money to promote their brand even though ppl say they want “relatability and diversity”. The data doesn’t lie.

My home as a low income girly pop is not the setting ppl want to see when I’m promoting my product. They want the illusion that I have money bc that’s aspirational and inspires them to buy the product bc then they can “be just like her”.

Maybe if I was middle class I could get away with it but no one wants to see poverty, sorry.

I just rented a studio space to promote the product for my upcoming launch. It’s $70 an hour but in my mind it was an investment. I say ‘was’ rather than ‘is’ because I realize that I have a better investment opportunity.

I could spend $280 for four hours of studio time to create video content and take lifestyle photos however I’d be rushing and won’t have time to retake mistakes I see when I’m editing bc I’m trying to make 2-3 weeks worth of good content in 4 hours.

Or

I could rent a nice airbnb downtown for $285 and get a full 24 hours to make video content, take photos, AND edit with time to reshoot mistakes all in one go.

I already put down the deposit for the studio for this months release however next month I’ll be renting an Airbnb.

I was also going to hire a photographer to take and edit my lifestyle photos but it’s $300 for an hour and depending on how many outfits I want to shoot it could go over an hour. Why do that when I could just take the photos myself and then hire a photoshop pro from Ukraine on up-work for $100. After all, it’s meant to be lifestyle and feel native to the platform. I don’t know how many influencer and micro influencers get professional photos taken every-time they post on insta but my guess is it’s not many.

My goal this month is to order samples for my next five releases, and buy props (home decor) for the Airbnb to make it look natural and lived in. Things like candles, throw blankets and pillows, a fur rug, vases, and flowers. I’ll also bring my own home items like my jewelry holder and pink curtains. Then in April I can shoot video content and take pictures for my next 3-4 launches.

I’ll need a lot of caffeine to take advantage of the full 24 hours but I believe it’s doable.

Anything to sell the lifestyle.

Queer Virus | Solo Exhibition by Dee Stoicescu

Glory Hole Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of works by artist Dee Stoicescu, Queer Virus: Radical Sick Queer Softness and Romanian Diasporic Identity. Through the use of superimposed and layered imagery of the artists home, the hospital, medical terminology, and Romanian language Stoicescu affirms and asserts their own individualized experience as a queer person living with HIV, and in doing so questions and de-centres the pathologization of HIV/AIDS by society and medical professionals in both the past, and present. About the Artist Dee is a queer emerging artist living in Tkaronto, Ontario. Their photographic work plays with(in) the entanglement of their embodied identities: HIV+, AIDS survivor, chronically sick, mad, gender-fluid, non-binary, and Romanian diasporic subjectivity. Their multi-media practices include collage-making, curating, photography, jewelry-making, and creative writing. The methods featured in the Queer Virus exhibit include sentimental material objects found in/around their familial homes in Canada and Romania, free photo editing software, online translation tools, online searches for microscopic HIV viruses, and playfully phantasmic shadows cast by the setting/rising sun. They hold a Bachelor’s (Hons.) Degree in Women and Gender Studies from York University. Dee is the author and content creator of Viral Tendencies (viraltendencies.wordpress.com), a literary blog dedicated to their intimate experiences as a queer, intersectional feminist living and loving with HIV. Their writing grapples with, overlaps, and contemplates themes of immigration, living at/crossing borders, ‘lost’ ancestral language, reclaimed ‘infectious’ queer sexuality, poverty, and living with anxiety and depression. Dee is also the curator of Ruse Dream Vintage (est. 2012), an online vintage collection featuring finds ranging from the 1930’s to the early 2000’s. Today, for a change, I will be predictably boring in choosing a photo, but with this choice I want to somehow pay tribute to the beauty of ZZH. I know that someone is beautiful, it's a relative matter, it depends on the other person's point of view. However, there are men and women in the world who stand out with their appearance, which makes people around them pay attention to them. ZZH has quite an original beauty, his facial features are subtle, and his large eyes and full lips nicely complement his face. By changing his hairstyle, ZZH can modify his appearance, but his eyes and lips always give him away. If you think about it, there are many men somewhat similar to him, but if we look closely, ZZH has something that other men do not have. That is why ZZH is one of a kind, with original beauty and strong character. These two things that make it stand out are unique. Back to the photo. This is one of the photos from the promotional session of the Japanese jewelry brand TASAKI. Looking at these photos or advertising spots, it is hard to resist the impression that ZZH was created to wear pearls. And in any edition, alone or in combination with other gemstones. Here ZZH in this photo is wearing a delicate set of jewelry: pearls combined with rubies. Pearls are a symbol of beauty, delicacy and perfection. Ruby is associated with love and desire. Gold symbolizes abundance and success (though it is sometimes associated with divinity and immortality). In my opinion, the choice of jewelry suits the ZZH person. ZZH is a beautiful, delicate person, full of love, who deserves success in life, because he deserves success in life through hard work. I don't know if that's the right interpretation, but that's how I see it. Looking at the selected photo, in which ZZH stands completely dressed in a black suit, one cannot help but feel that it hides some secret. The original set of flowers held behind the back may also be a mystery. Who is it intended for and why is it partially hidden behind the back. Yes, I know, it's a stylistic move for this particular photo, but you can add something that will add more mystery to the photo. Black color and ZZH are a perfect combination. The black color is slimming, and in the case of the ZZH figure, it makes it appear very slim and tall. The selected hairstyle also slims ZZH's face. His face and hands are the only bright spots in this photo. ZZH looks at the viewer with an anxious, mysterious look, his slightly parted lips suggest that he wants to tell us something, but is hesitant whether to do it or remain silent. I really like this photo for its mysterious style and ZZH look. ZZH looks here like an elegant, slightly dark prince of pearls. Always dignified and distinguished. Because that's what ZZH is like.

1906: The Earth (is) Not Hollow.

Intro: 2005's other caving movie "The Descent" is a British horror flick about a group of six women spelunking in North Carolina - when they're stalked by underground humanoids...

Plot: After a tragic accident, the grieving Sarah, her BFF Juno & 4 other, hardcore women go spelunking in an 'unexplored' cavern system.

On the way downwards, they find ancient cave paintings & evidence of somebody's previous expedition.

An underground mishap forces them to seek for another way out...

Instead, they end up lost several miles below the surface...

Too late, the group learn that there's beings living down here! They're supposedly flesh eating predators that use sound to hunt them down!!

Though the women freak out at 1st, it's understandable for such a dire situation.

But, they rally together & make a plan to survive & get out alive!

They've been forced to be violent, brutal - even cruel...

In this, Sarah & Juno really stand out, fighting back viciously!!

In many genres, but, especially in horror films, such violence is directed against women.

Not here.

Though they're presented as normal women, they lead active lifestyles.

So, they're not only prepared to fight back - they do so with gusto!!

They grapple, gouge & use pickaxes with aim & precision - fueled by a raging, berserker mode!

But, due to a certain piece of unique jewelry, Sarah finds out that her own husband was cheating on her!!

And, with who...

Now, in the worst possible place, the gals turn on each other!

But, Sarah gets her just revenge...

Criticism: This is an anomaly for any type of film. But, especially a horror one.

It's still rare to film strong, driven women doling out a major ass kicking & spilling out the most splatter!

The one major gripe is saved for the vague ending of the American version.

The original twist is not only better, it's also a more 'proper' horror ending. A last bit of gloominess that demands a sequel...

Yet, some movie company censors decided that the original ending is too 'dark' for U.S. audiences.

(Yo! Wake up!! We've survived seeing "The Exorcist", "Jaws" & "The Mist" - with no problems!! We're all stronger than you think! Though I'm still scared of going to the beach... Heh.)

Only some 64 seconds were actually cut...

Notes:

1. There's viewer rumors stating that Sarah, our final girl, only imagined the Crawlers.

Or, that she lied about them - hiding her slaughter of the others!!

Others believe that the Crawlers are 'real', but, not violent...

All of these speculations are due to the last scene in the American cut.

Where Sarah is startled by a vision of the dead Juno - sitting beside her!

In the uncut scene, Sarah screams after the vision & wakes up - still back down in the cave!!

(Why would they bother to cut this?! Answer: To make more money, by forcing folk to buy both versions. All for a measley 64 seconds!!)

2. Racism?!

The director, Neil Marshall, says that the Crawlers are descendants of an ancient people who 'preferred' living underground.

Supposedly, they've been living 'down under' for thousands of years! This has allowed the Crawlers some time to learn how to survive in the total darkness.

The 'problem' is that the location is in North Carolina.

Thousands of years ago, only Native Americans lived here. So, the Crawlers must - logically - be 'Indians.'

Sorry, but, I think that it's time for the old Debased Aboriginal trope to 'die' horribly already...

3. Women usually have slim pickings in horror films.

They're either the target of some stalker, evil haunting or "Jack the Ripper" types!

Otherwise, they're on a dangerous revenge mission - due to a rape...

The actresses usually have heaving bosoms, see thru tops & panic or cry at the drop of a fashionable hat!

This was done to attract a more male audience. Since most women avoided these kinds of films.

So, the studios were, at 1st, actively targeting just half of the available population.

Once they realized this, it led to the whole final girl trope. An attempt to get women back into the theater - for horror films.

(It's good to see the violence against women trope being subverted. Now, about the Native American thing...)

Avon Catalog (1979) Scans

I have a lot of fun revisiting old magazines and catalogs, as they're such time capsules into old trends. I have quite a few magazines and catalogs that I want to scan! Here is one of my handful of old Avon catalogs from the 70s!

Now, I have to lead off with stating the fact that I do not support MLMs at all. 

MLM stands for multi-level-marketing. There are tons of companies, such as Avon, that run on this “business model”. They operate on a structure of people enrolling into teams to sell products to earn commission. In reality, they are essentially pyramid schemes, and most people involved in these “companies” end up losing large amounts of money. 

You can read more about the impact of MLM companies and the damage they do here. I just wanted to make it known that I am aware Avon is an MLM company. Outside of scanning these catalogs for archival reasons, I do not support Avon (or MLMs in general) as a business.

I am scanning these catalogs because I find them (and just all catalogs in general) to be interesting time capsules into the types of products available for purchase at different points in time. And Avon does have many neat products, especially from this time period. This is purely for my curiosity and interest, not to promote Avon as a company.

Okay, now that that’s said and done, I wanted to share some scans from this catalog!

I already showed off the front cover, promoting some kind of perfumed talc powder spray. Talc powders used to be a huge beauty item.

The back cover is promoting a deal on shampoo. 88 cents?! That’s a steal in today’s money…but probably even back then, too.  

I couldn't find an exact month for this catalog. The identifiers are Campaign 15 from 1979. Going by the listed date of price expiration on July 22nd, I'm guessing this catalog was distributed sometime in the first half of the year. Or maybe a month or few weeks before July 22nd.

I did edit out the address and phone number of Miss Nancy, for her privacy. I did leave her first name because I personally just love knowing that items once belonged to someone. Does that make sense? 

Like, I wonder what Miss Nancy was like. Was she young in 1979? Was she old? A mother? A wife? Do you think she ordered any of the items from this catalog? If she did, did she enjoy them? Or think they were absolute garbage? 

I guess we will never know. But I think it is nice to know that there was a Miss Nancy back in the day, excitedly waiting for her newest Avon catalog. Or maybe she was annoyed to receive the catalog because she forgot to cancel her subscription or membership.

Either way, now I (and you!) get to view this catalog that once belonged to Miss Nancy.

Here are some of my favorite highlights of the catalog. Most of them are model photos, simply because it’s such a treat to me to see photos of people in 70s fashion and makeup. I’ll include some product pages as well though!

Let’s start with jewelry related scans!

This couple photo is just…so sweet to me. I know it’s an advertisement, but I love how he is looking at her, and how she is looking at us. I actually really love the jewelry advertised, too. I’d totally pick up a bracelet if I could!

Same goes for this leaf necklace and earrings set.

And these bee earrings.

And this butterfly necklace.

These models are SO beautiful and stunning. There is definitely a crazy amount of editing on them, but it’s kind of charming to see this old fashioned “glamour” style again.

Lastly, here is a page of “teen” jewelry.

Sad to say, not really a fan! They look rather cheap. It’s a bummer because most of the jewelry we just saw that was aimed for the adult women look quite pretty and of decent quality.

Let’s move on to some scans from the makeup section!

As much as I love the “swatches” edited on the sides of these eyeshadow pencils, I think I’d have to pass on these.

The pink and brown ones look pretty nice in the photos, but the poor blues and greens look a mess to me. Maybe they were better in person? Perhaps for $2.99 I’d be willing to give them a shot. 

Here are a couple model photos I like from the makeup section of the catalog.

Love her dress, hair, and choker! And the bunny, of course. This picture goes along with different colors of lipstick and nail polish. I actually really do like her nails now that I look at them. The colors offered aren’t bad at all, even if they are mostly red.

So beautiful! Can’t be a 70s pic without a daisy. Her blouse is so cute, it’s something I’d totally gravitate towards in a store.

Here’s a page of some flavored chapsticks.

I’m such a sucker for flavored chapsticks, I’d buy all these in a heartbeat! Well…maybe not the chocolate one. Never been a fan of chocolate flavored/scented cosmetics.

Lastly, here is an assorted cosmetics page.

The colors of the potted eyeshadow intrigue me. It seems like the trend was all reds, pinks, and peach tones for nails and lips, with bold blues and greens for eyeshadow. That’s my take away from this specific catalog. I kinda like it though!

One thing I KNOW Avon was (is?) well known for are their cologne and perfume decanters. At least, vintage Avon was. I’m not sure if Avon currently still sells them. They seem like such an old trend, but I know they are still considered collector’s items today.

This catalog has quite a few pages dedicated to them.

Gotta say, I was a bit surprised when I flipped to this spread. It is actually kind of cute though, if you’re into horses. And only $4.99! If I was a horse girl, I’d definitely consider it.

Gotta say, the Little Burro decanter is SO cute. It’s tempting me. As is the Sweet Tooth Terrier. Remember when that was a thing in cartoons and tv shows? Wrapping a bandage like that around your head and jaw when your tooth hurt? 

I think it was to hold an ice pack or medicine against your jaw/teeth so your hands were free. Funnily enough, I googled it real quick and found this thread, from AR15.com (???) of all places, discussing this. I just had to include this because it is so funny to me.

I do love that classical lady and the watering pail decanters. I can see why these became collectible items, I kinda want a couple for myself after looking at these!

Love her makeup and dress! She looks so beautiful!

Same with this woman! Her hair is chef's kiss for me. Big fan of the peachy lip color on her.

Also hey! Isn't that the rainbow hat worn by the chapstick girl?! Lol!

The caption is funny out of context. Sweet Honesty is an Avon fragrance. Some of the decanters shown earlier come with this scent of perfume in them. But I also think it works as a good relationship quote.

Oh, to be this woman in a nice, warm bath.

Why does that water look so nice! Why is that bathtub SO BIG?! I feel like I'm missing out.

Or to be this woman, pouring water on herself with a giant shell.

Bathing has really gone downhill, huh? Where is MY giant shell bathing pitcher?!

And finally, I saved the best for last. Check out this guy from the men’s spray talc advertisement.

Now THAT’S a 70s fashion moment. Wish there were more men featured in the catalog, I'm living for their looks.

There were so many great artists showing work at the group of galleries in the Kress Building in Ybor City, this post needed to be split in two. For part one, on Tempus Projects’ three spaces, head here.

Quaid Gallery is an artist cooperative gallery founded by a group of Tampa artists and is focused on contemporary artists creating mixed media exhibitions. In addition to monthly curatorial projects, they are planning to host events which will include readings, drawing nights and film screenings. Liquid Snow is their current exhibition and included the artwork pictured above by Jessi Sherbet, Mia Makes It, and Mike Cannata.

Parachute Gallery is showing One and Only · يكتا , which centers around the project Green Wedding by Fort Myers, Florida-based Iranian artist, Leila Mesdaghi.

From the website’s description of the project-

In late 2021, Mesdaghi traveled to her childhood home in Tehran, Iran, to throw herself a wedding, sans partner. She writes, “As a child I had dreams about getting married and having a wedding in our house. An Iranian wedding is a heavily glamorized and festive event where the bride is treated like a princess and guests come celebrate and admire her with gold and jewelry. I decided to have a wedding for myself. I made my dress at a high-end fashion boutique, bought a beautiful gold ring with my dad’s money, hired Maryam Saeedpoor (a well-known photographer,) a hair stylist, played Persian wedding music, and had a few friends plus my aunt and uncle as my guests.”

Documentation of the ceremony—a series of six limited-edition portraits by Saeedpoor and a collaborative video piece with director Khashayar Khalilkhani and vocalist Mahboubeh Golzari, reciting a poem by Iranian poet Houshang Ebtehaj about love and longing—beautifully articulates the complex emotions behind the project.

The photos and dress are seen in the image below, along with the work of six regional and national artists whose work ties into this project thematically. These artists are Sharareh Allahyari, Jordan Blankenship, Golbanou Moghaddas, Pottery Boys – Glenn Woods and Keith Herbrand, and Rebecca Stevens.

Tampa artist and photographer Jenny Carey has opened a new space, Gratus, which is currently showing her work. She also had her book, All I See Is Your Glinting: 90 Days in the Pandemic, which she created with Gianna Russo, the inaugural Wordsmith of The City of Tampa, available for sale.
