finally caught up to episode 5 of bocchi, the part covered here in kvin’s article. i can’t describe all the little details as well as he can, but yes, this show is great fun, the character animation really is that charming, and however exaggerated bocchi is kind of a autistic girl mood - in a different way to the girls from eizouken who are like driven by their intense special interests, the angle of someone who finds approaching people very hard and is constantly disappearing into her own world to imagine terrible scenarios.
i’m not sure if “will the bandmates figure out that bocchi is ‘guitarhero’“ is going to be like a spyxfamily type of fundamental premise where that can’t be resolved without breaking the ‘bocchi is good at guitar but too socially awkward for it to show’ concept, or if they’re gonna cross that bridge later on. i kind of hope they do. it’s painful! even if that’s the point! the poor girl!!
it’s definitely a little slower-moving than the other ‘rise of musician’ stories i saw recently like paripi koumeii (ya boy kongming). and while that was like, largely in service of the joke ‘kongming executes his famous strategems for a young pop star’, this one finds a clever way to be highly exaggerated (bocchi’s fearful flights of fancy represented with all sorts of visual gags) and simultaneously very grounded (the kessoku band girls are not super-prodigies like the eizouken girls, and they so far have modest goals like ‘play at the band leader’s sister’s club’; the animation has a really strong sense of 3D spaces, with all sorts of wacky camera angles and a detailed and architecturally distinctive music club set which I’m fairly sure is CGI). so it’s equally a well-done character-driven slice-of-lifeish story in the vein of k-on, which is impressive considering it all started as a 4koma.
i admit, rock music is not something i know a ton about, but the music we hear definitely doesn’t feel like something a totally amateur band would make but something professionally recorded. it’s not as jarring as it might be - we skip over the very first performance so we don’t get to hear what bocchi gets chewed out for, and the first actual performance we do see is one after they’ve all been working pretty hard. maybe it’s more obviously flawed than i realise? not sure.
kind of wild that in the ~20 months since the wonder egg priority debacle, cloverworks have knocked out seven (well, six and a half bc spyxfam was a collab...) other shows before bocchi, many of them noted for exceptional animation, as well as two movies and a handful of ONAs. what’s going on over there! that’s a wild pace, not even mappa is going that fast

idk if this is stupid of me to post in the tag, i also wanna be clear that people can be mad about whatever but!! just to clear a little misinformation, seasons 4 and 5 of bsd were split cour. meaning, to my understanding (it’s POSSIBLE i’m incorrect about this but i’m like 99% sure i’m not) it was all produced together, with one season break in between. apparently this was how they did seasons 1 and 2. it’s becoming a very popular thing within anime to market shows this way.
this is to say, it’s not as though production on season 4 wrapped and then during the 1 season break they immediately began working on season 5. it was one continuous production, if my understanding is correct. just thought i’d throw that out there! given the state of the anime industry atm i agree with everyone else that bsd absolutely just needs more time in general, but i don’t think s5 is particularly more rushed than the others, probably. there are a few tell-tale signs of a production crashing: taking unexplained breaks (examples: wonder egg priority, sk8 (((another bones show!))), currently airing zom100, etc), long lists of animation directors on episodes, etc etc, and to my knowledge s5 hasn’t been showing any of that (they have outsourced some episodes but that’s fairly standard practice).
anime production is messy! that’s all i wanted to convey haha

I was thinking that regardless of what weird translation they’ll use for ‘tsunotarou’ in the localization, i will pay it no mind
He’ll always be tsunotarou to me~

I find it hilarious that even though Vanitas is by no means short (standing at 176) he exudes such short person/gremlin energy that you tend to forget.

Ai: Uses a 4 color ball-point pen, a ribbon wand and glowsticks as weapons from the Captured Maidens she helps which represents them making an effort to stand up to their traumas thanks to Ai.
Rika: Uses box cutters as her weapons which represents her guilt for pushing Chiemi to suicide and how she feels she must punish herself.
Momoe: Uses an umbrella as her weapon which is possibly based on the Japanese custom of Ai-ai Gasa which can tie to her presumed relationship with Haruka.
Neiru:

people talking about the show getting a second season are like so incredibly optimistic wonder egg is nowhere near popular enough to do so and the only thing left to decide that is blu-ray sales which we will have to see

i’m gonna talk my thoughts about wonder egg priority here so warnings for suicide mentions
ok i really liked the beginning of wonder egg priority but then it got really convoluted and i was so confused by the end that i didn’t even enjoy watching it anymore.
see, i hate when things aren’t explained/ don’t give a reason behind why things happen. it’s why i’m not a huge fan of Kiki’s Delivery Service or that alfred hitchcock Birds movie. and this show leaves sooo many things unanswered.
like ok. How does Frill cause girls to commit suicide? i don’t understand how she has a role in this. I don’t understand how she can influence these girls. She’s an AI not a ghost?? also she died.
and why are her flower/insect people in this dream world??? wasn’t the dream world created after Frill had died? so that brings up 1. why is she alive? you would think the Arras would have erased all her coding or whatever and 2. why did they add her people to the dream world????? in no way does that make sense.
OK AND NEIRU. WHY? why would they create ANOTHER AI?? like these guys CREATED FRILL AND IT OBVIOUSLY DIDNT GO WELL. why would they see this Koko girl working on another AI and think ‘this would be fine’. Did she hide it from them? Do they not oversee the company anymore??
How do these girls who have killed them selves and need protecting in the dream world get saved? do they also go back to their own parallel universe but as an alternate version? or are they saved from living where they have to die all the time in the dream world? so when they get saved they go to the afterlife or something?? like how did we not know where these girls go??? why is it always girls?? Are the Arras transphobes bc a trans boy made it into their dream world?? but then i guess they wouldnt let Momoe be a fighter then??
AND HOW THE FUCK WAS MAKING GIRLS FIGHT IN A DREAMLAND GONNA SAVE THEIR DAUGHTER?? like that’s what i don’t understand the reasoning for. the daughter died. commited suicide. she didn’t have anyone like Ai, Neiru, Momoe, or Rika to avenge her in the dream world. And don’t they make the eggs? don’t they choose the girl? bc that’s what they did for that Koko girl right? Ura Arra made her egg. so it’s not like they’re just hoping one day the daughter will just show up.
and i know this one can be explained by ‘anime logic’ BUT HOW TF DO THEY MAKE THESE EGGS??????
ok i think that’s it. i think. there’s probably more (mostly about the teacher dude but i’m sure that’s been talked about plenty).
the one thing i loved was Momoe. great story. i feel for her. I hope she can find another Kaoru.

If you had to ask me what my favourite anime OST’s would be then here they are! Top 10 obviously because who doesn’t love lists?
I have amazing taste in anime OST’s btw, so I will be eagerly awaiting comments from those who haven’t already been blessed by these anime, telling me how good these tracks are.
Honorable Track Mentions from anime that didn’t make the cut:
Ao Haru Ride
“Ao Haru Ride”
“I Will - Instrumental”
“忘れられない時間”
Cowboy Bebop
“Cats on Mars”
“Piano Black”
“Rush”
Demon Slayer
“A Butterfly’s Dream & Anger”
“Kamado Tanjiro no Uta”
“Rengoku’s Last Smile”
Neon Genesis Evangelion
“Asuka Strikes”
“Decisive Battle”
“Misato”
“Rei II”
One Punch Man
“BATTLE!!”
“Mysterious”
“Seigi Shikkou”
And now on with the list!
10. Wonder Egg Priority
YEAHHHH, GOOD OST!!! I think the music is really cool and funky in this show! Probably the most unique OST I’ve ever heard. I love how the music can be so light and whimsical one moment, then “oh shit, we are fighting the metaphorical manifestation of your trauma and could very well die”. It’s like the kind of music you would have for an alarm or a ringtone. I think “Wonder Egg” and “花開く時” might very well be my favourite tracks, but I have a special place for “いぎ戦わん、乙女たちよ” as well. It’s upbeat and creepy! There isn’t a bad song in the OST, the only downside with the tracks would be how short they are!!
Tumblr media
“WEP fans shocked that someone is finally talking about the anime.”
9. Ouran High School Host Club
Honestly what a good anime, we all know how iconic the OP and ED are but what about the OST? I have a bias for orchestral themes and OHSHC delivers that in spades. They have so many funny tracks that perfectly evoke the crack energy of the lads and Haruhi, as well as some nostalgic ballads that sweep you right off your feet. “Polka Capriccioso” is their anthem, the minute I heard this again I started laughing. Then you have emotional tracks like “Nocturne for Orchestra” and “Pavan for Piano and Orchestra”. There’s not a single bad track, (which goes for most of the OST’s on here) and honestly I’ll be incorporating some of these tracks into my playlist.
Tumblr media
“OHSHC fans rolling up to every social function to be as LGBTQIA+ as possible.”
8. Beastars
I love this jazzy anime!!! Like yasss!!! So melodramatic and angsty!!! This show just has a really good soundtrack, it was really hard not to list everything lol. “Beastars - Classical”, “Beastars - Another Side” and “Hope of this World” have my heart forevermore, while “Impending Darkness” and “Louis’ Feelings” are fucking BOPS! We don’t talk about “Bite Me!”…
Tumblr media
“There’s no shoujo filter, you’re just a furry.”
7. Dr. Stone
I DUNNO HOW I MISSED THIS SOUNDTRACK OR JUST FAILED TO APPRECIATE IT, BUT MAYBE I WAS TOO ENTHRALLED WITH ALL THE SCIENCE HAPPENING TO PAY ATTENTION? WHAT THE FUCK I HAVE GOOSEBUMPS?? HOLY SHIT THIS SOUNDTRACK IS SO EPIC???? JUST GO LISTEN TO THE WHOLE THING I GUESS, NOT A SINGLE BAD TRACK. I WOULD RANK IT HIGHER BUT I JUST STARTED LISTENING TO IT WISNSOALSPDK. THIS COULD EASILY BE IN MY TOP 3.
Tumblr media
“Me ascending to a higher plane while listening to the Dr. Stone OST.”
6. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
I can already hear the FMAB hardcore fans screaming about “FMAB IS PEAK FICTION!!! BEST ANIME EVER!!! THAT INCLUDES ITS SOUNDTRACK!!! IT SHOULD BE IN FIRST PLACE [gamer slur] [death threat]”. Shut up. I love FMAB, and my god when I hear “The Fullmetal Alchemist” and “Trisha’s Lullaby” am I frozen to the spot. I knew FMAB would go down as one of my favourite animes when it made me cry on the second episode. I watched this anime in 2020 and I still get nostalgia hearing the music. My two other faves are “Concerto ~ Brotherhood” and “Overture ~ Brotherhood”. Fitting since these two are my favourite brothers in fiction.
Tumblr media
“Anime fans happy to see that FMAB didn’t take 1st place for something anime related.”
5. Toilet Bound Hanako-kun
OOOOOOOOH BOY!!! I first thought TBHK was just gonna be some pastel middle school reverse harem anime, but I was wrong, wrong, wrong! I love this anime and it’s music so much, I was listening to my fave tracks for a solid month straight. Also during 2021 I would just listen to a piano version of Tiny Lights during my online maths classes and sob my heart out. Maths is very stressful. This anime has RANGE!!! It has a lot of good comedic tracks, spooooky tracks and ROMANTIC ones. “Tomo Tomo” and “Firindotto” are such endearing tracks to hear, while “Fantasuteriasu” is downright ICONIC, but my absolutely favourite would obviously have to be “Sutarakushon”.

“TBHK fans when they get a Nene x Hanako moment right after being emotionally destroyed.”
4. My Hero Academia
I didn’t want to put My Hero Academia on the list. I’m not even up to date with the anime/manga — I’m still on S3. I have a love hate relationship with this show but goddamn does this OST make me so emotional. It makes me feel like I can do anything, and I can’t ignore that raw emotion. My Hero Academia was one of my first anime, I have to show it some love. My favourite tracks from S1 would be: “You Can Be A Hero”, “HERO A” and “My Hero Academia”. For S2: “You Say Run” (obviously), “Eiyuuteki Butou Sentoukyoku” and “Bakusatsuou”. Finally for S3 (which I never finished 💀) my absolute fave has to be “Bakugo’s Rescue Soundtrack”. THOSE DRUMS!!!! I SCREAM EVERY TIME!!!
Tumblr media
“MHA fans when “You Say Run” starts playing.”
3. Hunter X Hunter
Oh yeah!! I started watching HXH because I found out the Among Us betrayed music was from the show, no that’s not a joke. I have also listened to Hyori Ittai an unhealthy amount of times. Probably my all time favourite song to ever exist, but we’re talking about OSTs! Truly the tracks for this anime are beyond iconic, you hear that music and you know it’s time for nostalgia. The thing with HXH is that it has so many OSTs and no, it’s not cheating to talk about all of them. My favourite tracks from the first would be: “The Silver-Haired Boy” and “The Silver-Haired Lullaby”. For the second OST my faves would be: “Zoldyck Family Theme”, “Go on Gon!”, and “Departure for Strings”. From the Phantom Rouge OST: “The Red-Eyed Monster” and “Emperor’s Time”. Finally the last OST, and holy shit is that an OST to contend with: “Kingdom of Predators”, “Hyori Ittai Lamento for Piano” and “Elegy of the Dynast”.
Tumblr media
“HXH fans after hearing that HXH is never going to have an ending for the 1246396481623748292638 time.”
2. The Promised Neverland
There are no words for how much I love this soundtrack. It was originally going to be first, but I remembered one other anime with an OST that I’ve listened to religiously. If I liked a background song in an anime I’d try and find it, but TPN was the anime that got me to actually go find and listen to the OST. Even for the No. 1 anime OST. This OST is so haunting and ethereal, adding to the bittersweet tragedy of the show. Those motherfuckers bottled raw emotion in their music. My favourites would be “The Promised Neverland Track 1”, “Isabella’s Lullaby”, “Emma’s Sorrow” and “Emma’s Determination”.
(Edit: I forgot about how good Ray’s Retaliation is and how fun Dancing Krone is.)
Tumblr media
“Ah fuck, ran out of ways to slaughter anime fans— ah well, Cloverworks already covered that with TPN S2.”
1. Violet Evergarden
I’ve listened to and enjoyed almost every single track in this OST. Each one is meticulously crafted in a way that adds to the world of Violet Evergarden. Everything about this anime is beautiful and the music, a thing of perfection in itself elevates the anime to where it is. There is not a single bad or boring track. Watch the anime and listen to the OST.

I don’t understand how one day Maya is saying she wants a mini Carina and the next she’s complaining that the baby will be “all Deluca and no Bishop”. Don’t the writers remember what they’ve written before? Like, make it make sense!!!!!! Anyways, I can’t wait to see how you make sense of it in Serendipity! Big love.
Haha, I feel like "make it make sense!" is turning into a popular phrase in the fandom!
I don't believe that Maya's comment about the baby being "100% Deluca and no Bishop" was about its genetics - like I said in my episode rambles, it's about control. So far, the baby stuff has all been about Carina - her desire to have a baby, her body, her egg. And I'm not suggesting that Maya has been forced into this, it took a bit of time but she is on board with the whole thing. (Yes, I know that there's the whole her-career-is-her-priority issue but she's reassured Carina every chance she's had that she's all in.) She's said several times that she is happy for Carina to use her egg and carry the baby - to Carina and to Travis & Andy. She also made it clear to Carina that it's not about the baby having her family's genes.
But Maya is someone who likes to be in control, we know that about her. So far, this whole process has been outside of her control. And when she tried to assert herself over who the egg donor should be, Carina pushed back and insisted on her choice. It was very telling that when Travis said "it's not just your baby", Maya said "it's not just hers". She wants to have some control over who this baby is going to be and choosing an anonymous sperm donor means she's loosing another element of that control, whereas using a sperm donor they know means that they go into this knowing the genetic background of both sides of where their baby comes from.
I'm not saying it's good storytelling, I've been criticising the writers all season. As I've said before, they write the characters to fit the storyline, not the storyline to fit the characters. But at least this week I understand why Maya feels like that, because they've taken the time to explain it, whereas the more frustrating part to me is that they're not giving Carina the same opportunity to explain how she's feeling. So right now we're seeing a different balance between the two of them, because Maya is the one who is being honest and open, while Carina is the one holding her feelings back - which I find quite interesting.
Let's face it, this whole episode was engineered to get Marina to the point of having the conversation about using a donor that they know - becuase that's the story that the writers want to tell. Whether they want that story to be endearing or messy, who knows - since this is Shondaland, I'm always going to suspect that they're doing it to be messy because drama and thrills. Hence why already there is a lot of annoyance at the prospect of Jack being the sperm donor, even though it hasn't happened (yet?!), because that seed has already been planted by Jack offering his sperm [no pun intended!] and no-one trusts the writers!
Serendipity is actually going to end with the wedding. I made the decision a while ago that I'm not going to continue it into season 5, for several reasons. It's already the longest fic I've ever written and the longer the fic goes on, the greater the chance that I won't complete it - especially with the way the writers are really testing my loyalty to the show and the ship. Fortunately, when I go back to season 4, I'm reminded why I love Marina so I'm still enjoying writing it and delving into the aftermath of season 3 and the start of their Covid separation. I'm also not enjoying season 5 enough to want to explore it, the whole baby stuff is just not my cuppa tea. To be honest, I don't think I could make sense of it if I tried! There have been so many episodes already this season where I'm left wondering who these characters are and whether I truly understand them.

Current Top 10 Anime Favorites
10. Madoka Magica
This was higher on my list last time but I've decided to move it to 10th. Sailor Moon was my first anime, so once I started getting into darker stuff Madoka Magica was a great bridge. I love deconstructive, almost ironic, type animes. Something that goes against your original expectations.
Tumblr media
9. Assassination Classroom
I believe this is the same placement it got last time. Ass class is truly timeless and is comforting and devesting. I find myself in the mood to rewatch it often so it's kind of a staple to me.
Tumblr media
8. Devil is a Part-Timer
Another comfort anime of mine, though it is not my go to to watch for comfort (That's the royal tutor which isn't in the ranking but is still amazing check it out!). I'm not a big fan of Isekai but this is the exception.
Tumblr media
7. Fruits Basket
This is new! It was not on my previous ranking but it has broken the top 10. Going in blind was one of the best decisions I have ever made, I didn't even know about the whole turning into animals thing. The fact that it can make cry of laughter and sadness is impressive. And to my therapist the Cinderella-ish episode is a good coping mechanism.
Tumblr media
6. Moriarty the Patriot
You may have noticed that Bungou Stray Dogs is no longer on this list. It is true that I am a classic literature nerd, but I have been reading Arthur Colan Doyle's Sherlock since elementary school. I even named my cat after Moriarty! So just seeing it from a different perspective made me so happy! Even though I have read some works from Dazai, Chuuya, and the others but I read these books in my youth and it brings a sense of nostalgia for me that Bungou does not.
Tumblr media
5. Haikyu
I believe this moved up in rankings! The reason it has risen the ranks is because of how often I rewatch it. It is something I can never get tired of, so it is special in some way. I don't even like volleyball but oh I love these teams!
Tumblr media
4. Wonder Egg Priority
Remember when I said I love animes that are not quite what they seem, Wonder Egg fits that. Usually I don't gush about animation, but this is an exception, the art work is beautiful and is the whole reason why I started it. Also we do have lgbt representation. It is oddly relatable in ways, also it has its uplifting moments. Truly a phycological masterpiece in my opinion
Tumblr media
3. Sk8 the Infinity
Ooh, we are entering the top 3, Sk8 in so many ways is close to my heart. First of all the dub cast is amazing, and it made me buy a skateboard. Also I have started watching professional skateboarding! It also taught me the "x-games" is a real competition not just something said in a vine.
Tumblr media
2. Hunter x Hunter
So Sk8 and hxh switched positions since last time. However I find myself rewatching hunter x hunter a lot for a 148 episode show. Hunter x hunter is one of those things that it just gets better the more you watch it. You will always miss a detail and you can discover more parts about it during each watch through. It makes the show so rewatchable.
Tumblr media
1. Higurashi: When They Cry
Have I started the remake? No. It is because I am scared it will disappoint me. The layers of this show is incredible, along with the world building and the twist and turns. People say it is hard to comprehend, but I say you aren't meant to understand everything it adds to the mystery. Also once you finish the second season, and you rewatch the first it changes the show. Watching higurashi for the first time is something I will never experience again.
Tumblr media
Again these are just my opinions please don't send death threats. I mostly do this for myself so I can see how my taste changes over time (08/2021)
