3/100 Days of Productivity!
I'm still sick but I'm doing good academically! at least I think!
Done with my pali assignment! (on day 4 morning btw)
Also done with my HSKK class!
I'm still studying Japanese at N3 level because I'm not ready for N2 yet... Hyouka is helping me along.
A new semester for HGU UNITWIN starts tomorrow! Worldview studies and Health Psychology here I come!!!
I finished "The Con Job" which is a Leverage novel and it was honestly disappointing since I'm rewatching the show. But I'm still gonna pick up "The Zoo Job"
On this week's HAIYUU book club activity: We're reading the little prince! Last week my friend chose that book and I was astounded by the amount of people who thought it was a children's book(??!??) Anyway, we're gonna discuss translations too since we decided to let the readers pick the language of the book they wanted. Personally, I'm reading it in Chinese.
My tonsilitis still persists. Now I have body aches. Idk when I'll get better but god, it better be soon.

WORLDVIEWS: The Character of Presuppositions

I’m sorry but Aemond is hot and I know you say he’s a loser but you draw him hot too so I’m still looking
You are so real for this lmao. That being said, I see your point and raise you:
Aemond is hot AND he’s absolutely pathetic and that’s exactly how I like him. He is at his best when it is acknowledged that he’s a pathetic person. He just checks off all of the boxes. He needs to be humbled because when he’s not on a leash he rampages and ends bloodlines. He’s a loser, and Luke knows, Alys knows, Jace knows, Daemon knows, Corlys KNOWS, Aegon knows, Rhaena knows, Baela knows, everyone who knows him personally just kinda understands this about him. I just know he doesn’t know the cost of a banana at a supermarket. However, if he’s kept in line by self-consciousness and deprecation then all is well.

like I’ve been generally fine in my teenage years (no more unhappier than from the average dose of teen angst) but man do I miss the excitement I’d get from those fantasy Geronimo Stilton books

What you have to understand is that I WAS online reading fanfic in 2008 and literally every gay fic was about people having internalized homophobia freak outs; spending 6 chapters realizing they’re gay (but other plot forbidden) or (and this one was so popular I cannot stress this enough) hate crimes. Like actual hate crimes...would just constantly be happening to our protagonists in an escapist form i fiction I was reading to tease out the gay stuff on my screen. And then Pun was writing in 2008: there will be zero of that AND I know how to write dialogue AND I know who bottoms 😏….I mean we stan

phoenix wright was so insane for being friends with a boy for less than one school year when he was like 10, deciding to write to said boy for the next 10 years receiving 0 response and then after all that, changing from theatre to law midway through university because he saw said boy in a newspaper looking miserable and decided he needed to meet him

every day i barely restrain the urge to bitch about the social sciences
#☢️.txt#listen. all of the fields under this umbrella are legitimate and worth studying#but trying to group them with mainline stem is. silly at best#ppl always turn this into a 'hard vs soft sciences' thing but like. its not that!#im gonna be honest before i took higher level social science classes i didnt think much about this but like. the social sciences#place huge emphasis on the subjective nature of things and imho that goes against the very core philosophy of the natural + logical science#and like. that methodology WORKS for these fields. history benefits from a degree of subjectivity#but social 'scientists' always get pissed off that natural and logical scientists DONT consider that valid#in our fields!!! god the amount of social 'scientists' who insert themselves into physics discussions#using extremely complex aspects of quantum mechanics to justify themselves#while half of them bitch about being expected to know stats. is absurd#im gonna be real i think ppl are attached to the term social sciences bc they think thats the only way for those fields to be taken#seriously and like. thats the fucking problem isnt it????#you want fields outside of STEM proper to be taken seriously but you continually reinforce this idea by insisting#fields like history and sociology Have to be sciences in the same way as biology and mathematics#and instead of accepting that. youre the humanities its fine its literally fucking fine#you do stuff that scientists dont do. bc science alone cannot answer every single question people have#the naturalistic + objectivist worldview is very good in certain contexts! but it has faults!#and the same applies to the philosophies behind social sciences!#you cannot use the techniques in anthropology in physics and vice versa. its fucking fine#also humanities people need to stop craving approval from STEM people its so.#you are reinforcing the cycle youre pissed off about

i think that you would be an amazing teacher and i wish i could be in your class
aw thank you so much!! i'm glad you think so.. hopefully i can make at least one student's high school career a little easier, and hopefully i can remind them why they should never stop loving learning, no matter how hard the school system tries to beat it out of them :')
#it's sad how few teachers acknowledge how the school system literally does not promote or reward learning#the way schools are designed now is like... they just want you to memorize. keep it in your head long enough to pass a test#and then you can forget all about it. all that matters are those stupid standardized tests lollllllllll#the way this approach to schooling has decimated how language arts (my subject) is taught is especially infuriating#it's no longer about learning to analyze literature and how to think for yourself while also understanding the author's original message#i see so many people say they lost points on language arts assignments for not interpreting the theme 'correctly'#and that makes me so fucking mad. like yeah it's possible to interpret something incorrectly like just look at tumblr.com#BUT. very very very very rarely is there just ONE 100% 'correct' way to interpret a piece of literature#language arts teachers should not be giving out failing grades when their students pull out new themes and meanings from literature!!!!#they should be EXCITED! they should want to hold a discussion and see where those unique interpretations came from#all teachers should be open to learning from their students. but in a subject as nuanced and subjective as language arts?#it's absurd to act like there's one correct answer because no the fuck there isn't#i believe that as long as the student can explain why they came to a certain conclusion and cite the passages that made them think that-#then like. they're right. their interpretation is valid.#the beauty of literature is different people will pick up on different themes based on their own experiences and personal worldview#i don't understand why that gets punished when that's the whole fucking point of studying literature#anyway#mailbox

🚨 way too many words about Ty Betteridge warning 🚨, also episode 89 talk
i hope this is fair meta and not weird headcanon/overthinking ideas seeping in 8(
so something that has always been fun about WOE.BEGONE is the way different characters have different mental models for how time travel works. not just the "are iterations the same people" question, but things like "if an event is corrected, what's the remaining moral weight and responsibilities" and even things like "multiple branching timelines y/n?"
and we're generally so wedded to Mike's perspective that it's not just that his model looks the most reasonable, but the pieces of evidence most salient to his model are the ones focused on (ie that the different Mikes do act pretty differently, that Base itself stations individual "iterations" in places like they're individuals, like having An OVER Mike™)
but Ty just said something that feels like a glimpse into such a different perspective that i don't think Mike even realized how badly they were talking past each other: the idea of "an iteration" is actually kinda weird to Ty, and that's sorta a big deal to us and us alone lol
not just the terminology of “iteration” itself, but what exactly counts as “a separate iteration” -- to the extent that he's sorta flailing around at translating into the intricacies of Mike's model ("look I did a thing to not-a-separate-iteration!" "actually that is a separate iteration >:(" "god DAMN it"). but like, note the line “we have access to as many recent iterations of you as we need” -- that’s not really the way that Base or Mike tends to talk about “iterations”? “an iteration” only happens after some sort of time travel happens, not “already existing for the plucking out”.
and like everything, it's motivated!! that is, here in particular, motivated by use of the technology: Ty can and regularly does pick out a new duplicate from any moment in time if he has the right information! if a past and a future version are "iterations", then there's kinda an infinite number of them, not just the specific named ones that Mike has solidified as People. you're working with a different type of math here when you ask "how many Mikes" Ty has access to, and it’s a math that Mike isn’t really speaking in.
and very nicely, this is absolutely paralleling the deal with Cole. "is it really a separate iteration if the copy is made as close to their original death as possible?" like... really questioning what it means to be "a separate iteration", beyond even the usual connectivity weirdness. love to see it.

Thinking abt things...
Say you have characters from a mythological or ancient source. like Grendel and his mother. ...specifically, Grendel and his mother. These are figures that are monstrous, eat human flesh etc etc. Across recent-ish history (1400s-present), they've been racialized by white authors along various lines, usually being heavily black-coded and fitting very well into that DEEPLY RACIST narrative. They also exist in a field (anglo-saxon studies) that is VERY White Supremacist, even/especially in academia.
now here's me. a white author. I've been writing these characters (in terms of analyses, original stories, putting them in fanfics/fanwork, etc) for a few years. I'd originally made the conscious choice to have them both be white, primarily as a conscious denial of the existing (negative)racialization of these characters, but also because I do not feel that I, as a white author, could or should attempt to portray characters like this through a racialized lens. I've seen other white authors that I otherwise respect try to do Grendel & his mother this way- and hooooo boy did it make me uncomfortable. great critical acclaim from the community but i felt like i wanted to squirm out of my skin. y i p e s. good message, pLEASE DONT WRITE THAT YOU'RE A WHITE WOMAN WHO HAS NEVER EXPERIENCED ANY OF THIS
however... the more I look at these characters and this field as a whole, the less comfortable I am discounting/ignoring the presence of race here. like its ridiculous, and harmful, and racist not to. there's plenty of writing abt it.
however, I also worry about the implications of me, a white creator, making the decision (even just re: my own work) that these characters/narratives "aren't meant for white people anymore". far from being reparative/restorative justice, I feel like I'm veering very far into assigning these monstrous figures to black/BIPOC authors "because they have more of a right to use/understand that narrative than we (white ppl) do"... and that's. also probably very racist. I think.
the closest thing I've gotten to a conclusion here is that racialized AND nonracialized/non-BIPOC-centric depictions of Grendel and His Mother are both okay, good and maybe even (assuming the non-racialized ones still have SOME kind of message or story to tell) necessary. It's harmful to deny race around these characters or try to write them "color-blindly". It's also (though this I'm less sure about) harmful as a white author to "give up" these characters due to some percieved (read: stereotyped) idea that they're more "needed" in nonwhite communities.
...however.... where does that balance leave me, a white author who wants to write about, cosplay, make fic about, and generally love these characters?
I'm not sure I can like them anymore-
but again that feels like overthinking in the most problematic way possible.
I would genuinely love feedback/critique here bc I'm just going around in circles on this....

The actions and mindset of the Kingdom
The actions and mindset of the Kingdom
A recognition of the Kingdom of God results in a lifestyle and emotional mindset guided by its principles. Romans 14:17-18 – For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Whoever thus serves Messiah is acceptable to God and approved by men. The apostle Paul uttered this statement in the midst of his instruction on not…
