Donât think about how Darrel almost certainly had to be the one to ID his parentsâ bodies. Donât think about how he had wait with bated breath for them to pull back the sheet, hoping and praying they had the wrong family but knowing deep down that his parents were gone. Donât think about how his last look at his parents was of their mangled and charred bodies, almost unrecognizable and yet achingly familiar. Donât think about how the first thing Darrel did as Soda and Ponyâs guardian was refuse to let them look, no matter how much they asked. He couldnât stand for that to be the way they remembered their parents. Donât think about how he sees their bodies in his dreams, and no matter how much time passes, he canât get rid of the image. Itâll haunt him forever.

A thing I think should be included with Rubyâs abandonment/attachment issues when weâre writing her, is that she was a foster sibling to a lot of kids. Like a lot of kids. She has effectively lost so many siblings and playmates and even babies/very young children sheâs essentially had a hand in raising. Her entire life has been loving and losing. And for foster kids getting adopted or reunited with their parents under better circumstances, she will basically have been unable to grieve that properly because itâs a good thing theyâre gone and theyâre supposed to celebrate it. Sheâs clearly very loving and caring even after a whole life of that, even though each time they leave a piece of her goes with them.
No shit sheâs going to end up with some attachment issues. Especially if she considers herself the lucky one, survivorâs guilt, Carla adopted her and none of the others, who have probably expressed that sentiment to her directly and asked why, in the hopes they could stay forever too, or just jealousy - what made you so special?
Foster children/youths in the UK also have to choose themselves to stay in-touch. Foster carers cannot directly contact the child once they have left their care. A âclean slateâ approach is preferred. So if the child doesnât request to get into contact â and sometimes arenât told they would have to or are discouraged from doing so â that means losing contact immediately and for good. Does that remind you of anything? Sometimes it also happens very quickly - it is far from unheard of for a foster sibling to go to school in the morning and find out the child theyâve been living with for months has gone when they come back in the evening. Even with warning it could still often be only days. I think you could argue 73 Yards has more to do with Rubyâs experience as a foster sibling than being an adoptee.
And of course the continuous loss of loved ones mirrors the Doctorâs experience with their companions fairly often. Another thing that quietly binds them that most other people couldnât understand.
#ruby sunday#not saying you need to write it explicitly#but that will have been a key factor in her life easily missed#so needs taking into account#to me this whole thing exemplifies why itâs so vital#that we keep exploring these sorts of things#in different ways through different characters with different experiences and opinions#a story and character that resonates less with you#(either by you not being adopted#or even just your different personal views/experiences)#may in fact resonate more with another#(the long term issues a foster sibling especially of high turnover may face#which i genuinely donât think iâve ever seen depicted before#outside of autobiographies) etc.

Let's talk about Henry's accent. (Fair warning: I'm not a linguist, these are just my thoughts.)
Henry has a proper English country accent, and to my ear is from somewhere in the Midlands, though not as far west as Birmingham. There's a lot of classism associated with accents in Britain: people often 'smooth' out their accents so as to fit in â a study in 2022 found 46% of adult respondents had been mocked or singled out for their accents in social situations. Henry's accent belongs to someone who is rural and working class, exactly as it should be. But to my knowledge, it's not often you get a protagonist with a rural or working class accent, such as Eggsy in Kingsman, â and when you do (such as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders), it's often associated with criminality, a bias that exists in real life too. It would have been easy for KCD to have a Henry with a more generic accent (think Geralt in the Netflix Witcher), but instead we get him speaking in an accent that reflects his upbringing and class, and it's fantastic.
#kingdom come deliverance#henry of skalitz#anyways: thank you Tom McKay for your lovely voice#if anyone has more precise regional opinions on Henry's accent lmk#I've seen people say it's West Country but it's a bit further north imo#Henry's accent is particularly great against Hans' more upper class accent#(but even there we have some distinction because Hans' accent isn't super upper class RP)#part of me wants to write a modern AU set in Britain just to explore the whole class dynamics#(and partly because I want to put Henry as a working class boy at Oxbridge but that's my own personal experiences talking)#(not as someone working class but as an outsider at Oxbridge)#(ie. Saltburn but it actually has something to say about class dynamics and also less murder)

my favourite writing device is having an un-Rei-liable narrator
#rei#volo#cheren#// tikposting#// character meta#the crowd booes me off the stage#forgive the pun XDDD his name is too easy to pun on#the way i write it it's not a conscious choice. it's just how the pov character (rei) experiences and contextualises the world#revealing backstory and personality and mindset through narration !!!!#not necessarily out of malice it's just. how he views things#interpreting new and foreign experiences through the lens of what came before...#conversations which read differently to different people.#in the context of rei that's stuff like unease around authority figures#always choosing his words carefully to project an image of competence (he has to be needed)#distrust and not taking things at face value but also paradoxically a fragile and nurtured sense of almost blind optimism#when it comes to friendships. like volo. (everyone turned on me when the sky turned red but it all resolved itself in the end didn't it?)#(what makes this different? / a lot of things. / i choose to believe)#volo [directly]: âi won't be stopped from my goalâ rei thoughts: we can work with this!!!!#and everything with Arceus too and his divine blessings and a plan that will work out in the end#if Rei can just... figure out what part he's meant to play. interpreting events as a narrative hurtling towards some unknown conclusion#i am talking about rei here specifically but this writing device is so good in general#would be fun to try get inside volo's head. there's so much going on there i don't understand yet#quite fond of that one analysis post about how volo lacks emotional intelligence and sees relationships as transactions#not necessarily out of malice it's just how he views things. whether because of past experience or brain chemistry#also need to give a shout to cheren my guy who is an outsider pov who projects his own experiences onto new things so that he Understands#(an outsider to Hilbert and N's clash of truth and ideals. life changing experience and knowledge but felt just a little off to the left)#(the narrative repeated again with new heroes. all he can do is help them but it falls on their shoulders in the end)#(no wonder he tries to insert himself into Situations)#anyway tag ramble over feel free to also ramble to me about your takes XD#rei pokemon

the issue with this culaeg dynamic is that i think it would make compelling fic and there aren't many people i would trust to write it so if i wanted it i would need to write it. but i don't like writing from cĂș chulainn's point of view and i know myself well enough to know there's only one perspective i could write a dynamic like that from and it wouldn't be lĂĄeg's.
#i don't like writing from cc's perspective because he's a weird guy and it's hard to adequately convey that weirdness#i don't think his brain should work like mine and therefore i find it hard to tackle#but. well. sometimes when writing outside your own experiences#you nevertheless do have to follow your own inclinations somewhat#or you're just making life harder for yourself#not to overshare or anything.#culaeg#scriofa

I haven't even read the ending and I won't have a full opinion on it until the actual chapter comes out, but from I have seen about "loose ends"... I could imagine that Gege actually wanted to explore more but there are certain reasons that kind of halted that. Similarly, like with MHA's ending.
(I'm sorry but I'm not deciding on just leaks on whether a chapter is good or bad.)
It just feels odd to me. I don't know, it just does.
I think about the overall scheduling and that Gege can't and can do certain things because he does work with other people he has answer to. I wouldn't be surprised if after this, Gege comes out with a statement saying there was a lot he wanted to continue to explore but couldn't due to reasons. There's also Gege's health to consider.
Whether the ending got fumbled or not, again, I don't know. I'm not here defending Gege or making excuses, but putting insight and why the ending possibly became what it is.
Hell, just last year people were upset because how some of the episodes of the anime looked but then it's turns out how the workers literally had to crunch for time and apologized (which I think was just so sad to do because the animation and pacing was fine for me and I know that has to be hard to do with little time to perfect it but some of you couldn't relate but I digress) as if they are actually to blame when they're just employees.
Maybe it is just me but it just seems odd to me.
And I know some people are upset about Gojo. If you are, I'm not holding it against you. I like him, too and yeah, I'm shedding a tear or two.
However, how this fandom acts now compared to before is such major whiplash for me.
Some of you want to throw around "Gege hates Gojo" so much but Gege is the same creator who gave the audience Gojo and a story to understand and yet a lot of people still mischaracterize him and only see him as "a hot character" or "the powerhouse that should come back because how dare he be happy in the afterlife" or "the blue eyed twink".
Actually, I find that some of you probably hate canon Gojo more than Gege supposedly does because of all these different versions that the fandom have conjured up.
The most Gojo did deserve is a funeral after he died and I get being upset if he didn't get that in the story, I would be upset for sure.
But given how much I have seen the fandom act when it comes to Satoru Gojo's character, I'm taking a lot of opinions on "Gege mistreated Gojo's character", the ending and everything else with a very teeny grain of salt. Yeah, be "critical" all you want but it just seems for anything nowadays that's all people want to do without considering other factors.
You can still hate or like something and acknowledge other things that play into why that something is the way it is.
#whether i hate or don't hate the ending that's just for me to tell#sometimes yeah some stories don't pan out well but sometimes#it's not because the writer can't write#or the writer has some vendetta against you get the fuck over your damn self you ain't that fucking special#it is because outside factors#they do exist#it is very clear some of you forget that#yeah the ending to any story could be better but sometimes it's okay to sit back and think why it wasn't#without the urge to grab a damn pitchfork#starting to think that some of you never actually written or drew anything before to experience outside factors#i write and sometimes i feel like i mess up on my writing but it's because i do have a life that I cannot stop#I'm sure gege probably did want to explore more with the ending and probably beating himself over it#but it does seem quite odd to me how mha ended so soon and then jjk follows after both being major shonen mangas#and around this time aren't other mangas getting popular? I don't know just seems... odd#just kiya's thoughts#jjk#jujutsu kaisen#jjk 271#jjk manga spoilers#jjk spoilers

Aang being a shitty dad is fine, but it's the way tlok makes Aang a shitty I have a problem with. You're telling me a guy who's entire culture was whipped out and whole family was massacred wasn't overjoyed at the possibility of sharing his culture with his entire family?
Would Aang have given more attention to Tenzin? Probably, them being the only airbenders would have almost certainly fostered a complex dynamic between the twoâ even to the extent that it would damage the father/son relationship. I think it's also worth pointing out that Aang was raised in a culture without the nuclear family dynamic we see him participarting in with Katara and their kids, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that Aang would fall short of the expectations and responibilities being a typical father figure brings especially when he himself never experienced that dynamic. Especially, especially compounded with the task of rebuilding a struggling world and maintaining peace.
However, do I think he would neglect to show his kids his culture? Their culture? No. Certainly not the extent he did, and especially not when we see how excited he is to share it with his friends in the show. Why wouldn't he be excited to share it with his kids? With all his kids? How the writers of The Legend of Korra make him a bad dad is a complex series of failures not the least of which stem from racism, the unwillingness to even attempt an understanding of multicultural families, TLOK originally being a 12 episode miniseries that then got greenlit for another season and was suddenly taxed with building upon a world that was never intended to exist beyond its original scope, and a fundamental misunderstanding of Aang as a character.
tldr: see
#he probably would have been a kinda shitty dad just Not Like That#and while were here#why is bumi portrayed as essentially cultureless? certainly there were non benders in the air nomads#and why does the show act like only Bolin is from the earth nation and Mako from the fire nation?#because these white! creators fundamentally do not understand what living in a multicultural household is like#and were completely incurious to what the experience might've been like for these characters#and again. to harp on the whole building upon a world that was never intended to exist outside its original premise thing#that's why the writing gets weaker in the second season and picks back up in the third#these writers are clearly talented but so obviously fumbled when it came to expanded on these characters#who were written for a short quick one off series and then suddenly had to exist outside of that#all of the arcs and story beats were pretty one note and quick because book 1 is a full complete story#that's why only book 1 ties into the name conventions of atla#because all of the legend of korra was originally built to just be book one#and then suddenly your stuck with this story that you had completely wrapped up#and characters who now have to be expanded beyond what they were intended to be#and the writers very clearly could not do that. that's why Aang being a shitty dad comes out of left field almost.#and why none of the villains tie into each other until the very end with a quick little explanation#and it's also why the world building is so much weaker than atla#atla was know for it's compelling world building and dynamic side characters None of which exist in tlok#or well. they do! in a much smaller diluted form.#because functionally the story is still trapped in the original confines of the first season#and also trapped in the back there is 50% less content every season#no time to experience a small village in the fire nation! we gotta get to plot!#no time to flesh out the comic relief character!! plot! gotta get to the plot!!#and they couldn't even make that plot good in the second season.#atla#tlok#aang#:v

sometimes reading Koryâs talk about love and how her culture normalizes poly relationships and love is separate from marriage as in yeah sometimes you marry for politics but doesnât mean you âloveâ that other person or they you and thats OK is so weird because, you donât even need to go to space for that?? Its already somewhere on earth??
#I grew up with similar concepts of love#ofc there are rules and all but i also remember being very young and interacting with outsiders (usa) for the first time and#They showed so much disgust to the idea people could love more than one or just be with more than one#I remember pausing about it. like your house your rules ofc if thats how you wanna do it but i still donât get it#some people want one partner and thats it which is valid. I just didnât get why was all of the concept#So morally wrong to them?#Dick felt like he is a representation of these ideas of that time to me#Ig they are a lot more accepting now times has changed ig but there is still judgement from my experience#So where does that put kory today? I know they destroyed her planet i wonder if they would ever write side stories for her where she#Interact more with new and different cultures she probably going to find something of her home in them#koriand'r#kory anders#titans#But ig DC is USA comics specifically catered to USA world views and they still would see kory as different#Maybe im not where i should be

tl;dr so much of estinien after hw is just a constant joke that overtakes actual nuanced content with him and Iâve had it
#saint.txt#spoilers#major spoilers#estinienposting#heâs the only guy who can empathize with the wolâs experience of turning into a monster against your will. never taken.#he provides a deeply necessary outside viewpoint to the scions and is in the unique position of being able to call out their insularity.#thatâs never taken either. occasionally heâs shown to be whipcrack emotionally aware but rarely (ie. Fordola).#heâs extremely kind and emotionally intelligent and all of it is discarded in favour of making man stupid man bad with money man a loner#jokes or to making him audience eye candy jokoes. he joins the scions and refuses to interact with anyone bc heâs just here for vrtraâs arc#idk. I thought he was incredibly flat in HW bc he doesnât react to anything but his EW writing is just so much potential missed

đŹ: About Es being a past prisoner and the secret 11th prisoner in your AU. But advance apologies if I'm overstepping into your AU!
I had this idea from a story that pretty much did the same thing. Going off there are novels/manga on Milgram and there being another Es and their own prisoners running another Milgram (but differently) I imagine this Milgram projects has been going on for a while, and our Es was from a previous project who might have gotten the worst verdict (or the most spared out of everyone), and was given this final task as a warden for the next group of prisoners. This is why they so readily agreed and had their memories wiped for this Milgram project instead of being weary on a shady project on judging an almost crime, they've already been through this.
(BTW is it bad and worrying for one of our ten fav prisoners to be the next Es if this is legit...)
Anyway, that's why Es is in Milgram in your AU, I guess? And the lore drop that Kotoko picks up on them being the 11th prisoner, I can imagine her also talking to Kazui since he's a policeman to see if she could cross out any theories on who Es is (Did they look familiar. Possible missing child. Any cases to do with an almost crime by a child other than the 10 of them here). Kazui knows Kotoko wants to investigate, but reminds her that, like in their prison while the trial is on, the facilities they're in have high security too. They do have the freedom to move about, but still limited.
If they're trying to investigate Es, maybe Fuuta, Kotoko and Mikoto can try to do the hacking on the comp Mikoto's allowed to use to Photoshop some shots for the MVs and photos (Fuuta and Kotoko seem to be able to search up info they need I think...). Yuno, Mahiru and Muu can work on charming the staff to see if they can spill more deets on Milgram. Not sure how much the group can gather, but oh boy fun times in Milgram can turn into another sort of stress in this AU...
No worries!! Like I said before, this whole au has been a fun collaborative project, so there's no overstepping :) I am sorry I won't be writing a lot on the ending until we get more info, but that's just the perfectionist in me who doesn't want to be proven wrong đ
Still, I love tossing around and digging into ending scenarios, I really love this!
Because that would make a lot of sense why they're so willing to subject themself to the whole experiment! They remember how tough their experience was, and are confident they can care for the new set of prisoners while doing their job. I'm imagining they get the opportunity to return as guard, and get to have a nice talk with their own guard first. Once they fully understand what it's like, they're know they can handle it and sign up. It adds a bit of drama, too, since they must have been really young committing their crime in order to complete a years-long experiment prior to this one. They would have been like 10? Oof. (Now I wanna see their three trial songs đ)
And like you said, that also brings up the question of the new warden. Though I think it's based on verdict results, I can just picture Jackalope keeping an eye on everyone during filming. He studyies their interactions and personalities, keeping his own set of notes on who would make a good successor. (I'm not going to go through every character but there are pros to any choice, it's very fun picturing them all taking the job.) Haha, on the other hand, maybe the reason Kotoko keeps bringing up her role as Es' partner/bringer of justice is because she did discover the truth. She drops as many hints as possible so she can be chosen next đ
Ooh, I love her working with Kazui on an investigation! The fact that eh may know details on recent crimes (and almost-crimes) is super fun to work with. He's the last person who's going to spill a secret, so the group could go several trials without realizing Kazui had actually heard all about their situation this whole time.
(Getting sidetrack for a sec, I'm suddenly realizing that he and Kotoko may have heard things about the crimes in canon, too. They're a bit unclear about how much time passed between the murders and arriving to Milgram, so maybe he heard some things. I don't know how well-connected Tokyo police departments are, but Yuno, Fuuta, Muu, and Shidou are all nearby. There's definitely a chance he caught word of the vigilante nearby, and she heard about the odd policeman's suicide. Both of them could have heard about the tragic housefire, the disgraced doctor, or horrible schoolgirl murder nearby.)
Anyway, I like that idea of Kazui wracking his brain for any similar cases. Though, if he had, Milgram may have had the foresight to wipe parts of his memory, too. Maybe he does end up using his call to reach out to Hinako and have her look into it from the outside. Sadly, Kotoko seems the type to sacrifice her personal call to reach out to a connection who can help as well. I'll have to think about how closely Jackalope monitors those calls, hm.
I'm going crazy over prisoner investigation team !! Kotoko and Fuuta had the online knowledge to find some good info, and Mikoto and Kazui seem like they'd have a huge network of people they can ask for info and favors from. Haha, I'm torn whether Mahiru would have flirting down to a science or if she'd refuse to do it since it wasn't real love đ Still, she's very good at reading people and could definitely help the others charm and bribe their way into some restricted areas. Amane and Haruka can also charm with their innocence/cuteness (though I'm not sure Amane would). Shidou seems very organized, he'd have a plan and backup plan and backup-backup plan ready, no matter what happens. I think it's even funnier, then if Milgram had run several experiments prior. Jackalope would think this was just another runthrough, and for the first time the ten subjects decided to organize together and Cause Problems.
I think there's a beautiful irony in a story featuring ten prisoners planning a jailbreak to save the prison guard...
#milgram#as always thank you for sending đŹ!! these are so fun and big brained ough#lol yeah a fun fact about me is im Such a stickler for canon even in aus like this#the pain of writing a mahiru x boyfriend fic and doing the whole thing without ever saying his name đ#so i wrote the last chapter of the au as vague as possible so that it had a nice ending but i may go back to make things more accurate when#t3 ends and we (hopefully) find out who es is#i love that this eases some of the pain knowing that es knew exactly what they were getting into :')#and wont be too fucked up upon getting their memories back since they knew it was faked#while also adding extra angst that theyve been there for so long -- theyve spent so much of their childhood within milgram#i was just recently looking at that post about their character locations and had it all marked out on a map#i swear i dont just know that off the top of my head asdfsd#i never realized kazui and kotoko would have outside knowledge >:0#i really love that concept#between the ten of them they hit so many skill sets -- theyve got the brain and the brawn and the people skills#theyve got intimidation and innocence#theyve got the experience of 40yos and up-to-date kids#theyd be unstoppable -- rip jackalope đđđ#lights camera sing your sins#ask

i have this feeling that if we do get a wedding dlc (biggest proof i have of it outside of dialogues is the fact that jitka got her own portrait in the codex alongside the other characters) we'll get to find out that hans was wrong, and jitka is actually one of the fairest maidens of the realm
#and i will laugh looking at hans realize that she's indeed gorgeous and faltering just a little bit. because he's a bisexual disaster#bonus points for romanced hans to suddenly look for henry's support even more#because he fears that as he writes himself 'his body sometimes strays'#boy. a wedding dlc would actually be such an experience to play through#i'm already suffering and laughing for hans. and the wedding doesn't even exist in the games. anywhere. outside of text#i clearly doubt he'd start having second thoughts about henry. i don't think that will be the case#but he will definitely want henry to not think ill of him. i have this flash in mind where he sees jitka for the first time#henry next to him. and hans is flabbergasted. henry notices and he leans in#quietly telling him 'i shall leave you alone with your soon to be bride my lord. i'll be at the forge'#and he smiles and leaves. and hans absolutely panics and snarls at him to stay while trying to keep decent composure but it's too late#it's stupid and cliche but i find it funny and sort of wholesome that hans would need henry to be present to feel confident for jitka#and if he's not then he's a bit everywhere and nowhere with his head#anyway. ramblings of a crazed man here lmao

Bayou: not only that, she was very intelligent and very outspoken....
Cirrina: what's this one
Bayou: this is a sculpture made entirely out of urchin spines it was made by tosh monui. Every month he'd shed his old spines. He would collect them and Stick them in a ball of wax until the ball was completely covered in spineies. After he'd take the rest to make a body, he would call them mace men because they look like maces with a body. He soon started to model them after cave drawings of primitive urchin
Cirrina: that's amazing....oh what's this one. This one is beautiful
Bayou: this one is called 'home'
Cirrina: it's a beautiful landscape....who is by?....... This piece was painted by One of the top students in krillarney School of arts and it's one of the youngest to be presented in This museum she has won several awards and has several nominations. Iâve noticed something interesting and so Iâm going to write it down to reference later.
Roommate is driving to parentsâ house w borrowed kayak; needs help holding kayak in place while they strap it onto their car.
They have to leave ASAP; their family is expecting them by a certain time
Raining very hard outside. Not good for sensory.
Hold kayak in place. Get soaking wet. Canât move or leave or stim bc kayak will fall. Feel overstimulated.
Finish holding kayak. Watch roommate finish strapping it-
Immediately feel like somebody shoved me underwater. Everything feels muted and fuzzy. My body awareness turns distant.
I am able to recognize this as dissociation and try to ground myself. It kinda works. I can at least move and think somewhat.
Get inside, change into dry clothes.
Dissociation ramps up quickly. Struggle to hold conversation w/ roommate. They go to make a phone call. Body feels distant and heavy. Moving my eyes feels like work; I end up staring at a door handle for multiple minutes, causing optical illusions exacerbated by visual snow.
Clock back in at some point; I think we had a conversation about wisdom teeth before they left.
Body is back and operational. Iâm still off-balance from how quickly that happened.
#blue chatter#Iâm recording this because itâs evidence that I will dissociate in response to a sensory stressor#which I forget. or havenât noticed happen before. not sure.#either way I didnât think I did that before today but Iâve been told itâs very common to do that in response to overstimulation#and this was so recent and sudden that I can write it down#it was very noticeable as it was happening. which was also weird.#actively feeling your brain check the heck out is an Experience.#bc thereâs the pressure of âI have only so much time before I cannot fix thisâ but the part of your brain that is supposed to care about#anxiety and such is Rapidly Turning Off. as is your logical thinking.#which resulted in me standing outside frozen in the rain when I didnât need to because I was so focused on not fully dissociating#that I wasnât focusing on things like. moving. going inside. drying off.#so there was a good chunk of time where I was just standing still staring at the car thinking âoh this is weirdâ#âI can feel myself dissociating. how odd. I should probably do something about that. what was I thinking about?â#while my roommate is presumably wondering why the heck Iâm not going inside when I very clearly did not like being wet#they eventually had to tell me âhey you can go inside. and dry off. youâre done.â#whoops

I'm gonna let you in on a badly kept secret. most of my dazai analysis is truly just me projecting. but being decent enough at bullshitting to make it sound convincing so ppl usually end up agreeing with my takes
#what i lack in actual reading comprehension and analysis abilities i make up for in charisma and fake confidence#ahdjfllhh or maybe my projections just fit! maybe i accidentally do make good analysis! or at least offer alternative readings!#anyway i was thinking abt his relationship with pain again. and i started writing an essay in my head#before realizing I'm basically describing my own relationship with it. and that my experiences are not universal esp in regards to that#but just bc they're not universal doesn't mean they're nonexistent! who's to say dazai doesn't have them as well đ©#fr tho i think with a character like him that hides a lot of himself and his true feelings. insisting on one 'canon' reading is dumb#the whole point is you view him through your own personal experience. imo. that's what he'd want too#the emptiness inside him is meant to be filled by his audience. whether inside the story or outside it. i think.#that's why he is one thing around fyodor and another around atsushi and i see him one way and you see him in another one#and all these readings are right and all these versions are still him. you don't know what's inside the donut after all#but again :) even this part could be just me projecting :) but see how nicely i bullshitted through it to make it sound deep?#(<- being sincere but hiding it with irony as to not get rejected. as one does) (<- admits it bc who tf would get this far into my tags)#(but thank you if you did ily) (also shoutout to anyone who ever validated my unhinged analysis/projection mwah)

It's 2 am as I start this, and I feel the need to put pen to paper on this thought, so to speak, because it's something I think about with relative frequency.
This is going to be more of a personal musing on my experience with Doki Doki Literature Club, and why it had such an impact on me when I first played it, as opposed to any more concrete analysis, so I guess you can keep reading if you want to know more about me as a person and my overall personal relationship to it.
Something I think about often in reference to DDLC is its status simultaneously as a satire on visual novels and all of the tropes therein, as well as a love letter to that genre, explicitly. It's very readily apparent if you've played a good few "weeb" visual novels that it very much fits that bill. I think my first experience with it makes it especially funny in that respect.
To give context, I first experienced Doki Doki Literature Club like a month or two after it came out, in a Skype call (shows how old I am) with 2 or 3 of my friends. During this period of my life, me and this small group of friends spent lots and lots of time just hanging out in Skype calls like this, doing whatever we pleased, spending time well into the next morning just enjoying each other's presence and seeing what fun shenanigans we could get into on the internet.
One frequent passtime of ours was playing visual novels. Not just any visual novels, no; we went looking for the most low effort, mediocre, low hanging fruit of visual novels we could download for free. The goal wasn't to enjoy a good story, the goal was to find something amusingly bad, whether in cliched, awkward, lazy writing, or in sheer absurdity. I still do this sometimes, though it's admittedly with a different thought in mind now.
I don't think this perception we had of visual novels, being that they're typically sloppy, cringe-inducing messes is necessarily uncommon even now, but it was especially common back then. It was "weeb shit", simple as, but even deeper than your typical weeb shit. The perception was something like watching High School DxD unironically; it's just weird.
And I don't really think the perception of visual novels being that way is necessarily inaccurate; there is a very low bar to entry to actually creating a visual novel just by the nature of the medium, so really, anyone with enough passion for a project and time on their hands can make one. As a consequence, there are a few egregiously bad visual novels, there are a few really excellent visual novels, but there are a great many just sort of okay, somewhat mediocre visual novels, and lots of visual novels created with not so honorable goals in mind.
And one thing we really enjoyed was just exploring what existed in the depths of unpopular visual novels slipping through the cracks of what people saw. For most of it, we were making fun of it, but there were a lot of points where we found stories which were mediocre, but ended up really enjoying our experience with it. I think an important thing to understand with that lower barrier to entry is that it enables people who really are passionate about telling a story to tell a story that has a lot of heart, and you can see all of that heart as a diamond within the rough of the actual construction. Even in VNs with more polish, typically there are still cracks right around the edges, where you can see just a little bit of the humanity that goes into it. It's sort of magical.
And Doki Doki Literature Club was an odd edge case, which successfully played with all of my perceptions of it. DDLC is probably the only game whose story is reliant on a plot twist where I actually went in completely blind. By all appearances, it was a silly little visual novel made with no sense of irony, and I spent a great deal of time laughing at its contents, completely unaware that they were in on the joke.
And my perception of it being this way I feel like colored a lot of what happened next when I looked into it. I forget exactly when our playthrough ended--we didn't make it to any of the deeper stuff, I watched a Let's Play for that--and I forget how the whole series of events following that went, but somehow or another, I learned of some of the true nature. Namely I saw what happened to Sayori.
It reminded me of Corpse Party, when I actually thought about it.
I'm not going to go deep in depth on all of my thoughts about Corpse Party nor any of its history, but to be frank, Corpse Party reeeally sits in that realm of "mediocre, but lots of heart" to me. I don't really think Corpse Party is very good, particularly elaborating on a lot of the lore, but I really enjoyed it when I first experienced it, and it's still something I occasionally like looking back over. It's deliciously dark, and is extremely effective at creating an oppressive atmosphere out of what's ostensibly a collection of happy warm anime character tropes with little serious personality outside them.
So when I say that Sayori's death reminded me of Corpse Party, I mean that the way it paired playing the happy warm visual novel setting straight with extremely grim subject matter was done well.
Really, there were only a few other examples of this kind of media I could think of that really effectively utilized the exact kind of gut punch that DDLC did. Everything about the way the game framed itself around it, up until the final plot twist, really did feel like they were just elements of a visual novel playing themselves out. Sayo-nara really sets that tone for me--it still gives me chills sometimes when I hear it, because it sounds perfectly like what a "Bad Ending" theme for that kind of ending would likely sound like. It plays itself remarkably well into creating the setting, it really effectively feels like it is a normal visual novel falling apart at the seams.
I think that, more than anything, is why DDLC made such an impact on me when I first experienced it (which is remarkably different than the kind of mark it leaves on me now), it played so effectively with a genre I was so familiar with, and simultaneously played "mediocre visual novel with lots of heart" straight while also completely knocking "deep and terrifying existential horror" out of the park.
It's hard to truly describe, but there's just so much that feels so right about DDLC just being as it is. There's such a unique quality to the way it's written, to the way it's constructed, that goes down to its bones. It feels like that exact brand of junk food media you go to visual novels for. You don't necessarily want to think too deeply about the characters, or the setting of the story, or any of the deeper themes surrounding it; you just want to experience a nice story with some anime girls.
And then it yanks the rug out from under you, and makes you think it's junk food media with a side of deep and disturbing horror.
And then it yanks the second rug out from under that one, making you realize it's something much, much deeper.
I think something else it really appealed to, to me, was just that sense of being on the edge of the world which most indie games of that sort always give me. There are a shitload of examples I could give for this, but this sense I'm describing is the opposite of the sense which games like Undertale give me. Undertale's world feels lived in, it feels like it exists in a much, much wider concept of a great, sprawling world where billions of people live.
DDLC feels like you and the 4 girls in it are the only people in the universe. There are all of these environments you inhabit which ostensibly have other people who pass through them, live in them, there are implications of people, but inside this world, there's only you.
I think it just appeals to my desire to be transported to a complete other world for a little while. A limited space, where only things important to this experience exist, for this pure feeling of emotional catharsis. And that's something a lot of these sorts of simple visual novels appeal to; the goal isn't necessarily to tell some deeper story, it's just to present beats as they happen. DDLC takes that, and plays with it, both in a textual sense, as though these fictional characters exist and are somehow aware they're fictional, and in a meta sense, by directly playing around with your expectations and the way the entire thing is framed.
Or something like that.
Fun fact 1: Doki Doki Literature Club (specifically Sayo-Nara, still one of the few songs I can play entirely by memory) is what got me to start learning piano. I taught myself to play, and started mostly with the DDLC soundtrack (Which is very simple to play by ear, by the way, it's pretty much entirely C major.)
Fun fact 2: What initially inspired this thought was this video, which really reminded me of other visual novels we/I played that would utilize this particular style of music.
#musings#it's hard to really put into words the vibe i always get about it#it's something i'd really like to just capture in a bottle and keep stored somewhere#there's something to it that's inextricably tied to a lot of what my life was like when i was a teenager#there's a lot which is tied to what my relationships with people when i was younger is built on#there's a lot which builds the kind of person i am today both in writing and in personality#we're sort of just on this earth to experience shit#and this sure is something to experience#i think this is why i typically have such a 'meh' opinion about a lot of specific details to how things are constructed in fanworks#like dialogue and actions not being perfectly suited to how it would be written if it was canon#and i'm not saying i write like canon or that those are bad because they're not canon or anything like that#it's just like#i want SPECIFICALLY more of ddlc. so if you aren't specifically more of ddlc and are instead your own thing i'm not really that interested#not typically anyway#i feel like i'm losing a lot of what i want to say in translation#but i hope i've sorta conveyed a lot of my thoughts on the matter#as a visual novel i really enjoy ddlc and it really does play its genre well#and also as a story outside of the visual novel part i enjoy ddlc a lot#more regular analyses & thoughts coming soonish.......#shout out to me as a teenager lying on the floor listening to sayo-nara and feeling The FeelsTM for hours
