viii. Here’s Hoping

General | WC: 100 | Tags: Surprises, birthday, established relationship, romantic fluff, late at night, baking, cake, tea, Polish Stiles, Mechanic Derek __ It’s 11:11pm on a rainy Tuesday when he arrives home from the auto repair shop. Derek’s tired, covered in grease, and his muscles ache. He really needs a shower. But the scents of familiar honey and cinnamon, as well as his favorite Genmaicha make him pause. The slice of Wuzetka set alongside a steaming mug on the kitchen table lightens his mood. Yet, bashful words scribbled on torn paper end up warming Derek’s heart more.  I know we’ve never been crazy about grand gestures, but maybe that can change.   Happy birthday, Sourwolf! Wake me up so we can celebrate. [ Notes: Wuzetka is a chocolate sponge and cream pie dessert, which derived from Warsaw, Poland. Naturally, Stiles delved into some homemade baking and his family roots, and he had to make that for Derek. :) Genmaicha is a classic Japanese green tea, blended with toasted, popped rice. Went to a new delightful yumyum place on Saturday, October 15, 2022: Morluski's! It's a Polish and Italian place set up in what used to be a church. I had kielbasa, sauerkraut, cabbage, and mushrooms and kluski noodles, then a Polish cocoa cake called Wuzetka. Yum yum!!!!

A Helping Heart

The Jackelope was a surprisingly cozy place.  Tucked away in a corner, Rosie had ordered herself a salad and a Cosmopolitan and simply people watched.  Now and then she pulled her phone out of her purse and did a bit of web surfing or texting.  Her parents in particular needed some help trouble shooting the tablet she'd recently gifted them, but after a browse through the help page, they were good to go.  As it got later and her friends drifted off to sleep, Rosie found herself perfectly comfortable in her seat and unwilling to meander back home.  To waste some more time, she ordered another tall drink and a nice slice of Wuzetka and tucked into it at a leisurely pace.  It must have been her light buzz and full stomach that helped her to drift off to sleep...

When she woke up, her plates and glass were gone, and the check was placed lightly on the table.  Oh gosh.  How long had she been asleep?  It was incredibly considerate of the waitstaff to let her rest.  Putting her things away, Rosie grabbed the check and went to the cashier to pay and apologize for falling asleep.  She pulled her phone out of her purse and was surprised to it it totally out of power.  Okay, seriously, how long could she have possibly slept!  Or maybe she hadn't charged it as well as she'd thought.  Mm.  Looking over her shoulder, she saw that the cashier had disappeared into the back room.  The rest of the restaurant was empty, aside from a young man sitting by himself.  Heh.  A night owl?  She didn't usually bother people that looked lost in their thoughts, but she wanted to know the time.  If it wasn't too late she could swing by a convenience store on her way home.  She approached the man, careful to make sure she was in full view before speaking.  She'd hate to startle him, haha.

"Hi, excuse me.  I'm sorry to bother you, do you know what time it is?"  She held up her phone to show that the screen was black.  "The darn thing's dead."  Wow and gosh did he seem uncomfortable with her mere existence.  The smile he gave her as he answered her was the most forced lifting of the lips she'd ever witnessed.  Hot damn.  She thanked him, eager to leave the poor guy alone when another man approached from the bathroom.  Honestly, she would've just scurried away if the shorter man hadn't suddenly looked so panicked.  What was the issue?  Was there something on her face??
