This is the second book in the Resilient Women of WWII and while it can be read as a standalone the first book is about Herta and her family so I do recommend reading it first. Despite it being about a dark time in history it was a good read. The characters are wonderful. They are raw and real. You can actually feel their feelings and it adds to the experience. The pace isn't fast or slow, it just flows well with the story. It's a great read that is about love, family, surviving and more! Apologies for the boring photo, my creativity has been a little nonexistent lately… This was a fantastic book though! Heart wrenching, poignant, and well written. Every character, even the ones only present for one page, had such depth and felt so real. I loved that this took place after WWII as it seems many novels about the war only take place during. In fact there were multiple points brought up that aren’t often discussed, and I really appreciated that. Would highly recommend. Book Review…The Last Checkmate by Gabriella Saab Captured by the Gestapo, she is imprisoned in Auschwitz, but while her family is sent to their deaths, she is spared. If Maria can bear to face Fritzsch and her past one last time. The Last Checkmate is a beautifully written story with an inspiring main character and filled with courage and hope. There were some parts that were hard to read but I don't think there will be many people who read this book and not be filled with admiration for Maria! She is a strong and beautiful character to follow! I liked how the author weaved chess throughout the book. It was a unique twist! The story I'd fast paced and came together nicely. The writing is wonderful! As a reader you feel like you are there with Maria and can hear her thoughts loud and clear! When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr A must read. It is the story of the Author Judith Kerr as her family escapes from the start of Hitler's regime and shows a pretty different perspective for world war two. I was pretty surprised because it was told from the perspective of a child and for her how she just thinks this is an adventure. Of course as the reader you know a lot more happening. But it so eye opening to see how she lived from country to country for reason she didn't understand. It is a trilogy so I recommend you read all three. #thebookishreview. . I just finished reading this excellent piece work, WWII fiction done right. . Wolf by Wolf tells a story of a young girl shipped to a labor camp with her mother at the age of six during the war and from there the suffering, pain, determination and full-on-set vengent begins. . I really loved the theoretical world Ryan created in case the Nazis would've won the war. It's a terrible theory tbh. I also loved our main character so much; Yael, she's steel strong, vicious with many broken pieces inside. Our side characters are just as amazing but what I loved is what the five wolves stand for, the flashbacks and the stories... heartbreaking. . I can't wait to read the second book, I want to see more characters development, more action and most definitely more politics. .
